BMW Asia today announced the availability of the all-new BMW 520i Touring, a car that is the epitome of driving pleasure, sporty elegance and modern functionality in the premium upper mid-range segment. Entering a new era, the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring is more progressive than ever, featuring numerous digital innovations, pioneering systems for automated driving and parking, and increased sustainability throughout the entire product life cycle. The all-new BMW 5 Series Touring is a sophisticated all-rounder for everyday driving and touring, offering stylish presence, superior sportiness, versatility and spacious comfort.

A flexible drive architecture allows model variants with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid systems and purely electric drive systems to be produced on a single production line at the BMW Group's Dingolfing plant.

Stretched proportions, strong front, individual rear.

Dynamically stretched proportions and generously designed surfaces characterise the exterior of the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring. Compared to its predecessor, the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring is 97 millimetres longer (5,060 millimetres), 32 millimetres wider (1,900 millimetres) and 17 millimetres higher (1,515 millimetres). The all-new BMW 5 Series Touring has the longest wheelbase in its class, increasing by 20 millimetres to 2,995 millimetres.

The distinctive front end features a modern interpretation of the hallmark twin headlights and BMW grille. Two almost vertical LED elements serve as direction indicators and daytime running lights respectively. The BMW grille, which projects far forward, features standard BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting. In the side view, the flat window graphics and the long roof spoiler emphasise the sporty, elegant 2-box design. Powerfully sculpted rear wheel arches, together with the flat rear window, emphasise the car's wide stature. An L-shaped chrome bar divides the LED rear light elements, which extend well into the side sections.

The range of paintwork includes four BMW Individual paint finishes while the dynamic character of the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring is further emphasised by the standard M Sport Package and 20" M aerodynamic wheels with 245/40 front and 275/35 rear tyres.

Progressively designed cockpit, fully vegan interior.

At the heart of the progressive, driver-oriented cockpit design is the BMW Curved Display. Its 12.3-inch Information Display and the Control Display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches form a fully digital display network. The modern premium ambience in the interior is further enhanced by the new sports seats fitted as standard, the steering wheel, which is now flatter at the bottom, and the standard BMW Interaction Bar.

The all-new BMW 5 Series Touring has a completely vegan interior as standard. The Veganza seat surfaces also come as standard with decorative quilting. Further optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bi-colour variants. Other highlights of the optional equipment programme include the panoramic glass roof and the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with up to 18 loudspeakers.

Optimised functionality for everyday use, leisure and travel.

The all-new BMW 5 Series Touring offers more space and noticeably more leg, shoulder and elbow room, especially in the rear, as well as optimised acoustic comfort. With its versatile interior and numerous intelligent functions, the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring is just as impressive on the road as it is in everyday use.

A wider luggage compartment opening combined with a low sill makes it easy to stow large items of luggage. The all-new BMW 5 Series Touring has a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded from 570 to up to 1,700 litres. In addition to the automatic tailgate operation, remote unlocking of the 40:20:40 split rear seat backrest from the luggage compartment is also standard. Storage compartments under the load compartment floor provide space for the luggage compartment partition net and luggage compartment cover.

The ideal balance between sportiness and travelling comfort.

Driving pleasure in the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring is based on an ideal balance between sportiness and travelling comfort. With the longest wheelbase in the competitive segment, large track widths, an almost perfectly balanced 50:50 axle load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction and optimised rigidity of the body-chassis connection, it offers the ideal conditions for this. The extensively enhanced suspension technology includes sport steering, directly controlled wheel slip limitation and the latest version of the integrated braking system as standard.

The M Sport Suspension comes as standard. The M sport braking system, Adaptive Chassis Professional with electronically controlled shock absorbers, Integral Active Steering and new lateral dynamics management are available as optional equipment.

Innovative systems for automated driving and parking.

The systems for semi-automated driving and parking available as standard or as an option for the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring set standards in the competitive environment with their range of functions reliability and everyday benefits. The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assist and Distance Control with Stop & Go function.

The all-new BMW 5 Series Touring features the Parking Assistant Plus as standard, which includes the Parking View, Panorama View front, and 3D View functions as well as the BMW Drive Recorder and anti-theft recorder.

BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect", video streaming, AirConsole games.

The enhanced BMW iDrive display and operating system based on BMW Operating System 8.5 offers a redesigned home screen and the "QuickSelect" quick access function. The combination of the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is consistently designed for touchscreen and natural language operation. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps, BMW Head-Up Display and an augmented view on the Control Display or the instrument cluster.

The infotainment system in the all-new BMW 5 Series Touring is complemented by a range of attractive digital services. Munich. The new BMW 5 Series Touring is now on the road. The first vehicles were delivered to customers in Europe and Japan a few days ago. Now in its sixth generation, the sporty all-rounder in the premium segment of the upper mid-range vehicle segment is being launched for the first time as the all-electric BMW i5 Touring. Two models with purely electric drive and two with highly efficient four-cylinder diesel engines are available for the market launch. By summer 2024, the range of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and Sedan will be extended to include additional models with plug-in hybrid drive and an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine.

The Bavarian premium car manufacturer is systematically continuing the electrification of its model range with the BMW i5 Touring and the soon-to-be-available plug-in hybrid versions of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. The top model of the new series is the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring* with up to 442 kW/601 hp. At its side is the new BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring* with an output of up to 250 kW/340 hp and a range of up to 560 kilometres (348 miles) determined in the WLTP test cycle.

In addition, the BMW 520d Touring* and BMW 520d xDrive Touring* models, which are particularly popular in Europe, are now available. Their four-cylinder diesel engine is combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and develops a maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp.

Plug-in hybrid drive and BMW xDrive for Sedan and Touring models.

Plug-in hybrid technology will be introduced in the new BMW 5 Series Touring in summer 2024. Two models will be available. The new BMW 530e Touring* transmits the power of its two engines to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. In the new BMW 530e xDrive Touring*, intelligent all-wheel drive ensures optimum traction, agility and driving stability in all road conditions. This drive technology combination will also be available in the BMW 5 Series Sedan from summer 2024. The new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan* will be the third model variant of the four-door model with plug-in hybrid system.

The drive system of the three new models consists of a four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission, which together generate a system output of 220 kW/299 hp. The high-voltage battery provides a usable energy content of 19.4 kWh and enables an electric range of 83 to 95 kilometres (51 to 59 miles) for the new BMW 530e Touring, 82 to 89 kilometres (50 to 55 miles) for the new BMW 530e xDrive Touring and 82 to 93 kilometres (50 to 58 miles) for the new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan.

In the new BMW 5 Series Touring, there is also no loss of transport capacity when choosing a plug-in hybrid model. Thanks to the space-saving arrangement of the high-voltage battery in the underbody of the vehicle, the length, width and height of the completely flat luggage compartment are the same as those of the models with combustion engine and all-electric drive. Luggage capacity is 570 litres with all seats occupied and can be increased to 1,700 litres if required.

Available from summer 2024: Six-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the BMW 5 Series.

The range of engines available for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and Touring models will be extended in summer 2024 to include a straight six-cylinder diesel engine. The drive unit of the BMW 540d xDrive Sedan and BMW 540d xDrive Touring from the BMW Group's latest modular generation is combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology in the form of a crankshaft starter generator. Together, the combustion engine and the electric motor integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission generate a maximum output of 223 kW/303 hp and a maximum torque of 670 Nm (494 lb/ft).

Torque is distributed fully variably to all four wheels via the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. The dynamic power delivery of the in-line six-cylinder diesel engine and the superior power transmission are reflected in the 5.2-second acceleration time from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph), which is the same for both the new BMW 540d xDrive Sedan* and the new BMW 540d xDrive Touring.

The BMW M Performance Parts for the exterior set individual accents in appearance and at the same time fulfil functional requirements in terms of lightweight construction and aerodynamics. They have been specially developed for the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring with M Sport Package or M Sport Package Pro and are perfectly matched to the geometry and design of the vehicle. All Carbon components are made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), sealed with clear lacquer to achieve a high-quality finish, and give the car a sharp and sporty look from all angles.

The three-part M Performance Carbon front splitter makes a confident statement of exclusive sportiness and enhances the dynamic driving potential of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring. In addition to the M Performance Carbon side sill attachments, which give the vehicle's profile even more visual length and depth, the new M Performance accent stripes in Frozen Black emphasise the dynamically flowing lines of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring. The digitally printed accent stripes are in matt anthracite and feature the M Performance lettering. Aramid-reinforced plastic is very similar to CFRP, but has a high electromagnetic permeability.

The three-piece M Performance rear diffuser is also made from aramid. It emphasises the powerfully designed rear of the vehicle even more impressively and also enables the luggage compartment lid to be opened and closed without touching it. The M Performance high-gloss black roof spoiler and M Performance Carbon rear fins add a touch of sportiness and elegance.

High-quality interior options bring racing flair to the cockpit.

The M Performance Carbon door sill trims are an unmistakable sign of the dynamic orientation of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring. With their M Performance lettering, they are an eye-catching feature when the doors are open. For a particularly elegant first impression, M aluminium door sill trims are also available. The M Performance floor mats with leather-look edging, contrasting stitching and a seam in BMW M colours add a sporty touch to the interior. 

The M Performance key case also makes a clear performance statement on any occasion. Made from Alcantara and high quality leather in a carbon fibre look, the perfectly-fitting protective cover protects the vehicle key from scratches and is a perfect addition to the range of BMW M Performance Parts. Light alloy wheels and sport brake system for optimised performance.

The M Performance light alloy wheels available for the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the all-electric BMW i5 Touring are ideally suited to a sporty driving style and make for a highly distinctive look. Both summer wheel with tyre sets and winter wheel with tyre sets in the dimensions 19, 20 and 21 inches are available.

The summer wheel with tyre set with 21-inch M Performance Cross Spoke light alloy wheels is available for all drive types in either M Bicolor Jet Black gloss finish or M Frozen Midnight Grey. The M Performance 20-inch brake system ensures a deceleration performance worthy of the name and short braking distances. For the members of the World Car Awards expert jury, it was the standout new arrival among the field of luxury vehicles which celebrated their debuts in the world’s car markets over the past 12 months. The international panel of experts therefore handed the BMW 5 Series the crown of World Luxury Car 2024. The results were announced today at the start of the New York International Auto Show 2024 as part of a ceremony broadcast worldwide via streaming services.

The success of the BMW 5 Series was underpinned by assessments carried out during extensive test drives by the around 100 car journalists from 30 countries that made up the jury. These ratings were then recorded in detail by the World Car Awards organisers. The BMW 5 Series fended off competition from a field of 13 new luxury vehicles, winning over the jury not only with the majestic power delivery from its portfolio of electrified combustion engines as well as the electric drive system, but also with its high comfort levels over long-distance journeys and numerous digital innovations. “We are very pleased to receive this prestigious award. The verdict of the international jury shows that our strong-character products with their typical BMW qualities convince and inspire demanding target groups all over the world,” said Bernd Körber, Senior Vice President BMW Brand and Product Management, Connected Company.

BMW 5 Series: Consistent electrification and digital innovations.

The BMW 5 Series displays its progressive character with its powertrain technology, its innovative digital services as well as an elegantly sporty design, generous levels of cabin space, optimised acoustic comfort and a progressive premium ambience for the interior. Advanced assistance systems like the motorway assistant and active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation emphasise the long-distance qualities of the BMW 5 Series. With the display and control/operation system BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with extended functionality all on board, the i5 is comprehensively set up for user-vehicle interaction via touch control and natural speech. When the car is stationary, BMW 5 Series occupants can explore the extensive video streaming offering on the control display and enjoy a new form of in-car gaming – e.g. to make use of the time when the high-voltage battery is charging.

As a fully integrated member of the new BMW 5 Series model range, the BMW i5 offers locally emission-free driving pleasure. The driving dynamics and efficiency of the BMW i5 have their roots in fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. This comprises highly integrated drive units and high-voltage batteries with extremely high energy density. In addition, the latest evolution of adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help the car to achieve a range of up to 582 kilometres (362 miles) in the WLTP cycle, depending on the model and specification. The Combined Charging Unit of the BMW i5 enables AC charging at a rate of up to 22 kW and DC charging at up to 205 kW. This means the car’s range can be boosted by up to 156 kilometres (97 miles) within just 10 minutes when plugged into a fast-charging station.

The entire combustion engine portfolio has also been electrified. A flexibly designed drive architecture that was open to different technologies from the outset enables the new BMW 5 Series Sedan to be offered for the first time as an all-electric model, with plug-in hybrid systems and with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. The combustion engines from the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines all feature the latest version of 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

BMW wins title number nine in the World Car Awards.

The World Car Awards were created 20 years ago to stand alongside national and regional distinctions as an acknowledgement of outstanding innovations and new products in car markets worldwide. This year, the awards were presented in a total of five categories in addition to the overall prize.

Over the years, BMW has collected eight wins in the World Car Awards. One of the victors was the BMW 7 Series, which was crowned World Luxury Car in 2016 already. In 2018, the title of World Performance Car was presented to the BMW M5. This ninth title win for the Bavarian premium carmaker is the latest in a long line of distinctions amassed by the new BMW 5 Series over the past few months. For instance, the all-electric version alone adds to the trophy collection with a total of three „Car of the Year“ awards from Norway, Denmark and Italy.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring offers more space and noticeably more leg, shoulder and elbow room, especially in the rear, as well as optimised acoustic comfort. With its versatile interior and numerous intelligent functions, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is just as impressive on the road as it is in everyday use.

A wider luggage compartment opening combined with a low sill makes it easy to stow large items of luggage. Regardless of their drive technology, all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Touring have a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded from 570 to up to 1,700 litres. In addition to the automatic tailgate operation, remote unlocking of the 40 : 20 : 40 split rear seat backrest from the luggage compartment is also standard. Storage compartments under the load compartment floor provide space for the luggage compartment partition net, luggage compartment cover and charging cable for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid models.

All-electric BMW i5 Touring available in two variants from the start.

The new BMW i5 Touring is the first all-electric premium model in its competitive field. It will be available in two versions from the outset. In the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring, two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles together form an electric all-wheel drive with up to 442 kW/601 hp. With M Launch Control or M Sport Boost activated, the system torque is increased to 820 Nm (605 ft-lb). The top model accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and its top speed is electronically limited to 230 km/h (143 mph). The electric motor of the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring is located on the rear axle (combined power consumption according to WLTP: 19.3 to 16.5 kWh/100 km (62 miles)) and generates a maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm (317 ft-lb) with Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds.

In both models, the high-voltage battery located in the underbody provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. In addition to the efficient electric motors, adaptive recuperation and heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive and high-voltage battery contribute to the long-distance capability of the BMW i5 Touring. The range determined in the WLTP test procedure is 445 to 506 kilometres (277 to 314 miles) for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring and 483 to 560 kilometres (300 to 348 miles) for the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring.

Innovative charging solutions from BMW Charging.

The battery can be charged with alternating current with an output of up to 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. The high-voltage battery can be charged with direct current with a power of up to 205 kW. Anticipatory thermal management for the high-voltage battery optimises efficiency when using fast-charging stations. Connected Home Charging for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid models creates the conditions for solar and load-optimised as well as cost-optimised charging. The BMW i5 Touring is also suitable for the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function.

New diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

All diesel engines available for the new BMW 5 Series Touring are combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. The four-cylinder engine of the BMW 520d Touring models available at market launch (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 - 5.3 l/ 100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions:
154 - 141 g/km according to WLTP) and BMW 520d xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 - 5.7 l/ 100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions: 163 - 149 g/ according to WLTP) generates a maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). The drive portfolio will be supplemented by an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine in summer 2024. At the same time, two model variants with the latest generation of plug-in hybrid drive will follow.

The ideal balance between sportiness and travelling comfort.

Driving pleasure in the new BMW 5 Series Touring is based on an ideal balance between sportiness and travelling comfort. With the longest wheelbase in the competitive segment, large track widths, an almost perfectly balanced 50 : 50 axle load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction and optimised rigidity of the body-chassis connection, it offers the ideal conditions for this. The extensively enhanced suspension technology includes sport steering, directly controlled wheel slip limitation and the latest version of the integrated braking system as standard. The BMW i5 Touring and the plug-in hybrid models also feature rear-axle air suspension including automatic self-levelling.

An M Sport Suspension, an M sport braking system and the Adaptive Chassis Professional (standard in the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring) with electronically controlled shock absorbers, Integral Active Steering and new lateral dynamics management are available as optional equipment. Innovative systems for automated driving and parking.

The systems for semi-automated driving and parking available as standard or as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Touring set standards in the competitive environment with their range of functions reliability and everyday benefits. The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assist and Distance Control with Stop & Go function. In the US, Canada and Germany, the Highway Assistant is available, which relieves the driver of steering tasks on highways with structurally separated directional lanes. At driving speeds of up to 130 km/h (85 mph) it is possible to take your hands off the steering wheel and position them comfortably as long as you keep a close eye on the traffic. The system also includes the unique Active Lane Change Assistant with eye activation.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring features the Parking Assistant including start monitoring, Trailer Assistant and Reversing Assist Camera as standard. BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect", video streaming, AirConsole games.

The enhanced BMW iDrive display and operating system based on BMW Operating System 8.5 offers a redesigned home screen and the "QuickSelect" quick access function. The combination of the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is consistently designed for touchscreen and natural language operation. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. Independent institutes in Europe, the USA and Korea each gave the BMW 5 Series Sedan top marks. The testers were impressed by both the active assistance systems and passive safety.

5-star rating at Euro NCAP.

The independent safety experts from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) awarded the eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series Sedan the highest rating of five stars.

The extensive standard equipment with safety-relevant driver assistance systems makes a significant contribution to the 5-star rating. All driver assistance systems used in the new BMW 5 Series are among the best on the market and impressed Euro NCAP safety experts with their range of functions and reliable responses.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan also scored points in the area of passive safety with its innovative integrated safety concept, which was constantly being further developed by BMW. In addition to highly resilient support structures and precisely designed deformation paths, a model-specific combination of precisely coordinated restraint systems is used.

The Euro NCAP assessments are a Europe-wide recognized standard for accident safety and are constantly being further developed. An award with the highest rating of five stars goes exclusively to vehicles that have excellent impact protection and are also well equipped with comprehensive and practical technology to prevent accidents.

TOP SAFETY PICK+ Award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the USA.

The US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also gave the best rating with a rating as TOP SAFETY PICK+. The standard assistance system for preventing frontal accidents was particularly convincing here, which achieved excellent ratings in both day and night tests. In combination with the lighting system, the “plus” in the TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating was decisive. It is the highest award that this institute awards.

In various collision tests, the integrated safety concept of the new BMW 5 Series also proved to guarantee that comprehensive protection against injuries is always guaranteed regardless of the size and sitting position of the occupants.

The test procedure of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is the standard for the comprehensive safety assessment of new vehicles on the American market, which is important for the BMW 5 Series, and an essential basis for decisions by fleet customers in the USA. 

“Safest Car of the Year” at KNCAP in South Korea

In the Republic of Korea, the Ministry of Transport awarded the BMW i5 the “Safest Car of the Year” award. Only the vehicle that scores the highest number of KNCAP points in the respective year receives this award. At the official presentation of the award in Korea, Dominik Schuster, Head of Vehicle Safety at the BMW Group, emphasized the importance of this award: “Top KNCAP ratings underline our safety-focused development process and prove the BMW Group's commitment to continuous improvement of vehicle safety.”

The independent testers were particularly impressed by the performance of passive safety. They saw 99.5% of these met. In Korea full points were still scored for emergency braking systems to protect pedestrians and cyclists. Some driver assistance systems also received the maximum rating.

Singapore. BMW Asia today launched the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan, a car that is more dynamic than ever, featuring a wealth of digital innovations and for the first time, all-electric drive. As the first-ever BMW i5 Sedan, the new edition of the world's most successful business sedan takes the lead on the road to sustainable premium mobility in the upper mid-range vehicle segment. Consistent electrification, advanced BMW Curved Display and control system with “QuickSelect”, new digital services, and increased sustainability throughout the entire product life cycle characterise the progress made in the fields of the future, which are centrally important in the current transformation of the BMW Group.

The new model generation will be offered in Singapore with all-electric drive and highly efficient petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. Like all previous model generations, the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan is produced at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, where the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the first-ever BMW i5 Sedan are also manufactured.

A clear and reduced design language emphasises the all-new 5 Series Sedan’s sporty elegance and presence. Compared to the predecessor model, the new edition has grown in length by 97 millimetres to 5,060 millimetres, in width by 32 millimetres to 1,900 millimetres and in height by 36 millimetres to 1,515 millimetres. Its wheelbase was lengthened by 20 millimetres to 2,995 millimetres.

The front view of the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan is characterised by a modern interpretation of the twin headlights and BMW kidney grille. LED elements arranged almost vertically serve as turn indicators and daytime driving lights. BMW i5 eDrive40: Advanced BMW eDrive technology, traditional rear-wheel drive.

The all-electric BMW i5 Sedan is equipped with extensively enhanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. The first-ever BMW i5 eDrive40’s electric motor drives the rear wheels and generates a maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 400 Nm with Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The first-ever BMW i5 eDrive40 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds, its top speed is 193 km/h.

The space-saving high-voltage battery is located in the underbody and provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. In addition to the efficient electric motors, the latest version of adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive and high-voltage battery contribute to the long range. The WLTP values are 497 - 582 kilometres for the first-ever BMW i5 eDrive40. With the new MAX RANGE function, the range can be increased by up to 25 percent if required by limiting power and speed and deactivating comfort functions.

Innovative eCharging solutions from BMW Charging.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) of the first-ever BMW i5 Sedan enables AC charging with an output of up to 11 kW. The high-voltage battery can be charged with direct current with a power of up to 205 kW. For example, the battery charge level in the first-ever BMW i5 Sedan can be raised from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.

Charging in Singapore.

To make electromobility simple and straightforward for customers, BMW Asia has been collaborating with Greenlots, a member of the Shell Group, since 2014, to provide home and public charging options for customers in Singapore. 

Today, BMW Asia continues this partnership by offering BMW i customers either a comprehensive home or public charging package under the Shell Recharge banner:

• For home charging, customers will receive a wall-mounted AC charger with complimentary installation service.
• For public charging, customers will receive a subscription package of 10,000 kWh over 3 years at Shell Recharge stations with no monthly cap for charging. This is equivalent to 50,000 km of driving range (assuming average energy consumption at 20kWh/100km).

The wall-mounted AC charger provides a fast way to charge their vehicle at a rate of up to 11kW. Once the vehicle is plugged in, charging begins and will end automatically when the battery is fully charged or has reached the pre-determined level. In addition, BMW i models are compatible with all Type 2 public charging stations that are widely available across the island.

BMW Charging gives drivers access to one of the largest networks of public charging stations located in various office buildings, shopping malls, hotels and industrial parks in Singapore. Activation of and payment for the chargers can be done through an RFID card or the Shell Recharge smartphone app.

New petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

The petrol engine from the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines will be offered in Singapore. The all-new BMW 520i now features 48-volt mild hybrid technology and is combined with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

Unique balance between driving dynamics and travel comfort.

The all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan's characteristic balance between maximum sportiness and high-level long-distance comfort is enhanced once again in the new edition. The longest wheelbase in the executive sedan segment, increased track widths at the front and rear axles, an almost perfectly balanced 50 : 50 ratio axle load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction and increased body and chassis connection rigidity contribute to this.

The extensively advanced chassis technology, like the control systems, has been model-specifically adapted to the weight balance associated with the respective drive technology. It includes directly controlled wheel slip limitation, integrated braking system and sport steering with variable steering ratio as standard. M Sport models get a lower and sportier suspension system. Light alloy wheels in 19-inch or 20-inch sizes are standard equipment. Parking Assistant Plus including Reversing Assistant as standard.

The all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan is equipped with Parking Assistant Plus that includes the Parking View, Panorama View front and 3D View functions. This shows a 360-degree image of the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan and its surroundings from different perspectives on the Control Display. In addition, the Remote 3D View function allows drivers to view a three-dimensional live image of the vehicle and its surroundings transmitted to their smartphone (available for Apple iPhone from operating system iOS 16.2). With the optional Parking Assistant Professional, automated parking and manoeuvring of up to 200 metres can be controlled in the vehicle or by smartphone outside the vehicle.

Intuitive operation and new digital experiences: BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect" and BMW Operating System 8.5.

The enhanced BMW Curved Display and control system with "QuickSelect" also contributes to the characteristic driving and travelling experience in the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan. With Proactive Care, the focus is on recognising the vehicle's service needs also by using artificial intelligence and proactively offering solutions to the customer without them having to take action themselves.

This is not the first time that BMW has taken on a pioneering role in the use of digital technology to optimise customer service. With BMW TeleServices, customers have already been benefiting for many years from the fact that service-relevant data is transmitted directly from the vehicle to the BMW dealer. It is also possible to arrange service appointments online in this way via the My BMW app or dealer’s channel. With Proactive Care, BMW is now going one step further. From Condition Based Service to accident detection ^[1] as part of the automatic emergency call, the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan features numerous options for identifying servicing or assistance needs and reporting them to BMW according to the customer’s preferences. Depending on the type of service required, communication takes place via different channels: with an in-car message on the Control Display, a message in the My BMW app, by e-mail or - in the event of a collision or breakdown - by means of a Roadside Assistance call. Proactive Care offers the customer various types of services. Newly designed sports seats are standard equipment. The optional comfort seats offer a wide range of electrically operated adjustment options. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is the brand's first model to feature a fully vegan interior as standard. This includes the surfaces of the seats, the dashboard and the door panels, as well as the steering wheel for the first time. The seat surfaces in the Veganza version with leather-like properties are also optionally available with a decorative perforation. Further optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bicolour variants.

All-electric BMW i5 M60 xDrive as the top model.

The all-electric BMW i5 is equipped with extensively enhanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and is being launched in two variants. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive (combined power consumption according to WLTP: 20.6 - 18.2 kWh/100 km (62 miles)), which combines an up to 442 kW/601 hp drive with hallmark M performance and specific design features. Two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles make up an electric all-wheel drive. The system torque generated is up to 820 Nm (605 lb-ft) when M Sport Boost or the M Launch Control function is activated. This enables the BMW i5 M60 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds, its top speed is electrically limited to 230 km/h (143 mph).

The BMW i5 eDrive40 (combined power consumption according to WLTP: 18.9 - 15.9 kWh/100 km (62 mph)) is also available. Its electric motor drives the rear wheels and generates a maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) with Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The BMW i5 eDrive40 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds, its top speed is
193 km/h (120 mph).

The space-saving high-voltage battery is located in the underbody and provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. In addition to the efficient electric motors, the latest version of adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive and high-voltage battery contribute to the long range. The respective WLTP values are 455 - 516 kilometres (282 - 320 miles) for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive and 497 - 582 kilometres (309 - 361 miles) for the BMW i5 eDrive40. With the new MAX RANGE function, the range can be increased by up to 25 percent if required by limiting power and speed and deactivating comfort functions.

Innovative eCharging solutions from BMW Charging.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) of the BMW i5 enables AC charging with an output of up to 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. The high-voltage battery can be charged with direct current with a power of up to 205 kW. For example, the battery charge level in the BMW i5 can be raised from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.

The new Connected Home Charging is offered for the BMW i5 as well as for the plug-in hybrid models. It creates the conditions for solar and load-optimised charging (stage 1) and for cost-optimised charging based on a dynamic electricity tariff contract (stage 2, from 2024). In addition, the offer of BMW Charging and its strategic cooperation partner E.ON lays the foundations for networking with the energy market through bidirectional charging in future generations of vehicles. The all-electric models in the new BMW 5 Series are also the first BMW vehicles of the brand to be suitable for use with the Plug & Charge function. This enables the vehicle to authenticate itself automatically at compatible public charging stations without having to use an app or charging card.
A unique feature is the Multi Contract Option, which allows customers to digitally store up to five individual Plug & Charge-enabled power contracts from different providers in the vehicle.

New petrol and diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

Petrol and diesel engines from the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines will be offered in a market-specific selection. They now feature 48-volt mild hybrid technology throughout and are combined with a new 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission as standard.

In Europe, the market launch will see the four-cylinder BMW 520i Sedan models (fuel consumption combined: 6.4 - 5.7 l/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions: 144 - 130 g/km according to WLTP) with 153 kW/208 hp, the BMW 520d Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 - 5.1 l/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions: 147 - 133 g/km according to WLTP,) and the BMW 520d xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 - 5.5 l/ 100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions: 157 - 143 g/km according to WLTP) with 145 kW/197 hp each. Other petrol engines with four and six cylinders are available outside Europe. The model range will be supplemented in spring 2024 by two variants with plug-in hybrid drives of the latest generation. A new in-line six-cylinder diesel engine will be available for the BMW 5 Series Sedan from 2024. Another variant of the BMW i5 with electric all-wheel drive will also follow in the course of 2024.

Unique balance between driving dynamics and travel comfort.

The BMW 5 Series Sedan's characteristic balance between maximum sportiness and high-level long-distance comfort is enhanced once again in the new edition. The longest wheelbase in the upper mid-range vehicle segment, increased track widths at the front and rear axles, an almost perfectly balanced 50 : 50 ratio axle load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction and increased body and chassis connection rigidity contribute to this.

The extensively advanced chassis technology, like the control systems, has been model-specifically adapted to the weight balance associated with the respective drive technology. It includes directly controlled wheel slip limitation, integrated braking system and sport steering with variable steering ratio as standard. An M sport suspension, an M sport brake system and the Adaptive Suspension Professional (standard in the BMW i5 M60 xDrive) with electronically controlled shock absorbers, Integral Active Steering and new vertical dynamics management are available as options. The optional Adaptive M Suspension Professional also includes Active Roll Stabilisation with Active Roll Comfort. Light alloy wheels in 18-inch or 19-inch sizes (BMW i5 and plug-in hybrid models) are standard equipment. Light-alloy wheels up to a size of 21 inches and performance tyres are offered as options.

Intense partially automated driving experience: New Highway Assistant, unique Active Lane Change Assistant.

A significantly expanded range of systems for partially automated driving and parking is available as standard or as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. An innovative technology kit creates the conditions for their outstanding functionality.

The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assist and Distance Control with Stop & Go function. In the automotive markets in the US and Canada, as well as in Germany, it includes the Highway Assistant, which relieves the driver of steering tasks on highways with structurally separated directional lanes. At driving speeds of up to 130 km/h (85 mph), it is possible to take your hands off the steering wheel and position them comfortably as long as you keep a close eye on the traffic. As a world first, the system in the new BMW 5 Series now also includes the Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation. This comfort feature now achieves a new level of interaction between the driver and the vehicle. The vehicle suggests a lane change and this can be carried out for the first time by looking in the exterior mirror to confirm the lane change. The Active Lane Change Assistant takes over the necessary steering movements automatically, the traffic situation permitting.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is equipped with Parking Assistant, including Reversing Assist, as standard. With the optional Parking Assistant Professional, automated parking and manoeuvring of up to 200 metres can be controlled in the vehicle or by smartphone outside the vehicle.

Intuitive operation and new digital experiences: BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect" and BMW Operating System 8.5.

The enhanced BMW Curved Display and control system with "QuickSelect" also contributes to the characteristic driving and travelling experience in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. It is based on the BMW Operating System 8.5 and features a redesigned home screen with vertically arranged function icons on the driver's side. "QuickSelect” enables functions to be accessed directly without having to switch to a submenu. This means that the system has received an improved menu structure, oriented towards devices from the consumer electronics sector.

The new BMW iDrive is also combined with the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. It is consistently designed to be operated by means of a touch display and natural language. In addition, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan also features steering wheel buttons and the BMW iDrive Controller on the centre console. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes the BMW Head-Up Display and Augmented View on the Control Display or instrument cluster. The BMW Natural Interaction option is also available for controlling functions using gestures.

In-car gaming premieres in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.

In addition, BMW Operating System 8.5 offers a wider range of digital content for information and entertainment, faster update cycles for functions, improved information on charging points for electric vehicles and optimised access to many specific online services. For video streaming on the Control Display, there is a choice of YouTube and the Bundesliga In-Car app in cooperation with Xperi, as well as numerous aggregated contents on the TiVo platform.

In addition, the new BMW iDrive enables the use of an innovative form of in-car gaming with the AirConsole platform, presented for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. Drivers and passengers can play so-called casual games while the vehicle is stationary, for example to bridge waiting times while charging the high-voltage battery of the BMW i5.

Optimised networking with up to four 5G mobile radio antennas.

Other innovations include the Welcome Scenario with light show and personal welcome, which optionally also includes the dynamic light carpet. The BMW Digital Key Plus is now available for suitable smartphones with the iOS or Android operating systems as well as for the Apple Watch. With two 5G mobile phone antennas as standard and four as an option, the new business sedan provides optimised connectivity and phone quality. The Personal eSIM fully integrates the vehicle into the customer's digital ecosystem. In selected countries, the BMW ID enables automatic payment of parking fees from the vehicle.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers a choice of up to six My Modes to deliver an all-immersive vehicle experience. The standard equipment also includes optimised smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. With the Remote Software Upgrades function, the vehicle always stays up to date with the latest software. With BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, customers can also test selected functions free of charge for a period of one month and then book them for a specific term.

The market launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan marks the beginning of a new chapter in the field of customer service. With Proactive Care, BMW is creating a new platform for exchanges with customers when different types of car servicing is required. The focus is on recognising the vehicle's service needs also by using artificial intelligence and proactively offering solutions to the customer.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. Intelligent functionality is the great strength of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. But whether in day-to-day use or on longer trips, it stands out not just due to its comfort and versatility but also thanks to its enhanced driving pleasure derived from optimised engine and suspension technology. This sporty character can be specifically underscored by means of BMW M Performance accessories available as of the market launch of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. These ensure not just an individually tailored boost in agility and dynamic performance but also a distinctive, athletic appearance. The new BMW 5er Touring with M Performance Parts sees its world premiere at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

With their first-hand technological expertise, the BMW M Performance Power Kits provide a perfectly dosed increase in power for the engine in question, increasing driving performance but without influencing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions according to the EU test cycle. A BMW Power and Sound Kit is offered from market launch for the 6-cylinder petrol engine model BMW 540i xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 7.7 – 7.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 177 – 167 g/km) which increases output to 265 kW/360 hp and raises maximum torque by 50 Nm to 500 Nm. This also optimises the engine’s response and pulling power. What is more, spirited power delivery is accompanied by a striking, sporty sound thanks to the perfectly matched silencer system.

The BMW M Performance exhaust system is also available as a separate accessory product – both for the BMW 540i xDrive Touring and the BMW 530i Touring (combined fuel consumption: 6.3 – 5.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 143 – 133 g/km). The BMW M Performance diesel exhaust system is offered for the diesel models BMW 530d Touring (combined fuel consumption: 5.1 – 4.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 134 – 124 g/km), BMW 530d xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 5.7 – 5.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 149 – 139 g/km) and BMW 520d Touring (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 129 – 119 g/km). In all models, the respective stainless steel sports silencer not only ensures a characteristic sound but also adds an attractive touch of visual flair. Depending on engine type and equipment, it comes with either round or trapezoid tailpipe trims in chrome or carbon fibre. The trapezoid tailpipe trims are also available as separate accessories for all model versions of the new BMW 5 Series Touring.

The retrofit products in the suspension category help optimise sprint capacity, handling precision on bends and brake performance so as to achieve dynamic performance in true BMW M style. The BMW M Performance sports brake system available for the BMW 5 Series Touring offers a particularly high level of thermal resilience, thereby ensuring a constant deceleration effect even when driving in highly dynamic style. These qualities are achieved by means of inner vented, perforated lightweight construction brake discs with 4-piston fixed caliper brakes made of aluminium on the front axle and single-piston floating caliper brakes on the rear axle. Red brake calipers serve as a visual indication of the fact that the design is derived from motor racing. They particularly come into their own in combination with the 20-inch BMW M Performance light alloy wheels. These feature a dual-level double-spoke design and are available entirely in the colour Orbit Grey or in a Bi-Color finish. The weight-optimised forged aluminium wheels have mixed tyres in the sizes 245/35 R20 on the front axle and 275/30 R20 on the rear axle, complete with emergency running properties.

The driving characteristics and appearance of the new BMW 5 Series Touring can also be enhanced by means of model-specific BMW M Performance Parts in the product category of aerodynamics. The precisely harmonised components for the exterior are offered as a supplement to the M sports package. Here the range includes attachment parts for the front bumper in carbon fibre and a dual-section diffuser insert for the rear apron. The lower section of the rear diffuser is available both in hand-crafted carbon fibre as well as in a more discreet version made of polyurethane (PUR), which can be painted according to customer preference. This paint finish option is also available for the matt black side sill attachments made of PUR. Further visual highlights can be added in the form of BMW M Performance exterior mirror caps in carbon fibre, the black BMW M Performance radiator grille, black BMW M Performance bars for the brake air channels, side sill stickers with M Performance inscription and BMW M Performance accent strips.

A particular attraction from the cockpit area is the BMW M Performance sports steering wheel. In vehicles with an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission the latter comes with shift paddles for manual gear selection. With its rim in Alcantara complete with silver-grey cross-stitch seam and red central marking at the 12 o’clock, position, the BMW M Performance sports steering ensures intense motor sport steering in the new BMW 5 Series Touring at all times – not just on winding country roads.

All components are fully subject to the high BMW Group standards in terms of material selection, design and quality of workmanship. What is more, retrofitting these items has no impact whatsoever on the warranty terms as applicable to the vehicle in question. The BMW M Performance products form part of the Original BMW Accessories program, sold and installed through the BMW dealer network, BMW sales subsidiaries and BMW Service Partners.

The model-specific BMW M Performance accessories are offered to coincide with the launch of the new BMW 5 Series Touring.

“The Escape” – the new BMW film.

In the latest release from BMW Films, “The Escape”, the new BMW 5 Series sedan plays the leading role. Clive Owen, the Hollywood actor and cult driver from “The Hire” films, plays a mysterious hired driver and rising star Dakota Fanning plays Lily, a clone, in an action-packed short featuring thrilling chase sequences and breathtaking stunts. From now till February 25, visitors to BMW Welt have a unique opportunity to experience the original BMW 5 Series model from the film “The Escape”. Other film props and exclusive insights into the making of the short make this special exhibition a one-off experience – and not just for cineastes.

“The Escape” is an homage to the legendary “The Hire” series of BWM films on its 15th anniversary. A total of eight of those films were made in two series in 2001 and 2002. Each of the films featured Hollywood greats both in front of and behind the camera. Playing alongside Clive Owen as the hired driver, were stars such as Forest Whitaker, Mickey Rourke, Madonna, Gary Oldman and James Brown. Cult directors including Guy Ritchie, Ang Lee, David Fincher and Ridley Scott took the BMW shorts to Hollywood level, which did not go unnoticed at international film festivals. In addition to the Titanium Lion in Cannes, “The Hire” won just about every other award for the creative arts.

The new BMW 5 Series exhibition.

Sporty, elegant and stylish, the seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series sedan had its market launch worldwide in February 2017. An unprecedented array of high-tech features and improved handling make the new BMW 5 sedan an extremely attractive package. The new BMW 5 Series sets new standards in connectivity and driver assistance, offering BMW customers perfect support in their day-to-day driving. The dynamic nature of this new premium car is also reflected in the exhibition in BMW Welt.

Since the start of February, visitors have been able to inspect the latest generation of the BMW 5 Series sedan in a special display opposite the BMW Welt Lifestyle Shop. Multimedia elements are used to illustrate the innovative key features of the new BMW 5 Series for visitors, including new controls and displays, the digital BMW Connected mobility assistant, and the various diver assistance systems. Various touch screens provide visitors with a comprehensive insight into the dedication and innovation that has gone into developing this vehicle. One of the three walls focus on the multi-sensual experience. Among other things, visitors can find out about the Ambient Air Package. This package is an optional extra on the new BMW 5 Series. At the push of a button, the Ambient Air Package fills the interior of the car with a subtle, pleasant fragrance. Visitors can test two of the eight available fragrances at the exhibition. Ambient light creates a relaxed, cozy atmosphere in the interior, underlining the luxurious feel of the vehicle and serving as a functional light source. A backlit “5” at the exhibition demonstrates the variety of lighting options and the moods they create.

The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series.

With around 7.9 million vehicles sold by the end of 2016, the BMW 5 range is one of BMW’s core series. The sixth generation alone recorded sales of more than 2.1 million, making it the global leader in the premium segment of the upper mid-range. The seventh generation of the new BMW 5 Series has now arrived to defend this lead with an impressive array of innovative features. Intelligent voice control, gesture control and a 70 percent larger head-up display in combination with the networked services of BMW Connected, together with features such as on-street parking information and remote 3D view are just some of the many highlights of the new BMW 5 Series sedan.

The new BMW 5 Series sedan will be on show throughout 2017 in the special exhibition. “The Escape” set will be on display only until the end of February. On Monday, February 14, the first customer will drive away their new BMW 5 Series sedan at a BMW Welt handover.
