BMW M anniversary festivities continue with the confirmation of the BMW M4 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M for the New Zealand market in Q4, 2022.

The edition will feature Brands Hatch Grey metallic paintwork paired with stunning 19”/20” style 826 M light alloy wheels in matt GoldBronze to add to its sporty character. The eye-catching wheels first made their debut on the legendary BMW M5 CS late last year.

M Carbon package is fitted as standard and includes various CFRP components, such as the diffuser and rear spoiler which underlines its racing intent.

The icing on the cake for the exterior aesthetic is the replacement of the traditional BMW roundel with 50 years of M emblems on the bonnet, tailgate and wheel centres.

Bespoke ‘Edition 50 Jahre BMW M’ lettering decorates various touchpoints including door sills and head rest, as well as a high-quality metal plaque situated on the centre console to underscore its exclusivity.

The special anniversary edition is based on the current generation BMW M4 Competition M xDrive which offers 375 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque on tap. This allows it to complete the standard sprint from 0-100 km/h in an astonishing 3.5 seconds.

Munich. May 24, 2022 marks the 50^th anniversary of the foundation of BMW M GmbH. Almost a quarter of a year earlier, the BMW Group subsidiary is already demonstrating a sense of tradition and anniversary spirit on its current products. Customers who opt for a BMW M automobile or a BMW model equipped with an M Sport package with a production date from March 2022 can have their vehicle’s front, rear and wheel hubs decorated with emblems inspired by the classic "BMW Motorsport" logo. As an alternative to the conventional BMW emblem, it signals passion for racing and for the roots of the BMW M brand. This unique offer in the history of BMW M will be available for order from the end of January 2022.

In addition to the emblems, 50 iconic and historically significant BMW M paint finishes will be offered for selected models in the anniversary year 2022. Style-defining colors such as Dakar Yellow, Fire Orange, Daytona Violet, Macao Blue, Imola Red or Frozen Marina Bay Blue refer to the various eras of BMW M's 50-year history.

The BMW logo with the shifted semicircles in blue, violet and red was first used in 1973 on the racing car of BMW Motorsport GmbH, which had been established a year before. In 1978 and with the debut of the BMW M1 the three color stripes slanted to the right and leaning on the letter M followed. Even beyond the motorsport scene it became a trademark with particularly high recognition value and identification power. The legendary BMW M1 was the only BMW M high-performance production vehicle to bear the historic motorsport emblem in addition to the logo with the three color stripes. In both logos, the blue stands for BMW, while the red symbolizes racing and the violet expresses the connection between the two. In the meantime, the violet has given way to a dark blue, and BMW Motorsport GmbH has been operating under the name BMW M GmbH since 1993. Nothing has changed the high symbolic power of the brand and logo. In its 50^th year of existence, the company is more successful than ever as the world market leader in the performance and high-performance automotive segment.

BMW M has expanded the line-up of its sixth-generation BMW M3 and M4 models with the addition of variants featuring the celebrated M xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

This marks the first time M xDrive has been offered on the iconic M3 and M4 models and will further elevate the performance characteristics of the M3 and M4 with enhanced traction and faster acceleration.

The new M xDrive models will arrive in New Zealand for local deliveries by the end of 2021.

M xDrive and Active M Differential for superior handling dynamics

The M xDrive system has long been known for delivering a sure-footed, yet smile-inducing alternative to the classic rear-wheel-drive layout for a host of BMW M models such as the M5 Competition and M8 Competition.

M xDrive teams up with an Active M Differential to ensure fully variable distribution of drive torque between the rear wheels as the situation demands.

This intelligent all-wheel drive system aids torque transfer from wheels to road without any loss of power, especially when the car is being pushed hard or has less grip on one side.

When integrated the car’s onboard M-specific traction control, the system judges driving situations at hand precisely to send power to where it is needed most.

The objective is to produce a supremely dynamic driving experience that blends the customary M feeling with noticeably enhanced traction and directional stability.

The M xDrive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case for smoothly adjustable, fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels.

The multi-plate clutch’s oil supply is also optimised to keep the variable power splitting mechanism performing effectively even under hard driving on the track.

The task of transmitting power to the front and rear differentials is handled by driveshafts engineered specifically for the BMW M3 Competition Sedan and BMW M4 Competition Coupé xDrive models. The output shafts that relay the drive torque to the wheels are likewise bespoke elements.

The all-wheel-drive system has a rear-biased setup in classic M style. Typically, drive power is channelled entirely to the rear, with the front wheels only being brought into play when the system detects that the rear has run out of grip.

The transfer case features a bespoke control unit and integrated wheel slip limitation. This enables it to compensate for any differences in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels exceptionally quickly without having to involve the central DSC management.

This results in enhanced all-wheel-drive performance whose principal effect is to further intensify the sense of unshakable poise M models are renowned for in highly dynamic driving situations, such as powering through corners in a controlled drift.

The improvements in traction, handling stability, agility and dynamism brought about by the combination of M xDrive and Active M Differential also translate into superior sprinting ability.

The BMW M3 Competition Sedan with M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive both need just 3.5 seconds to reach the 100km/h mark from standstill, making them 0.4 seconds quicker than their rear-wheel-drive equivalents.

Major technical modifications optimise performance characteristics

The all-wheel-drive technology in the new variants is complemented by a double-joint spring strut front axle redesigned for these models and featuring specially adapted front axle geometry and an individually tuned steering ratio.

These extensive bespoke modifications for the all-wheel-drive system ensure that both the existing pure rear-wheel-drive variants and their new M xDrive siblings stand out with their engineered-without-compromise, signature M steering characteristics.

The all-wheel-drive models additionally benefit from a specially adapted version of the engine oil supply system designed to handle extremely dynamic performance.

Three M xDrive modes enable customised M experience

M xDrive also allows the driver to tailor the car’s all-wheel-drive system to the driving situation and their individual preferences.

The desired setting can be selected directly from the Setup menu of the M-specific operating system, with a choice of three different power transmission modes.

In the default 4WD setting, the all-wheel-drive system offers maximum traction and precisely controllable handling while maintaining a distinctly rear-biased power split.

Activating 4WD Sport mode directs an even greater proportion of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels, even in extremely dynamic driving situations.

The linear build-up of lateral forces characteristic of M models also makes it possible to execute controlled drifts. Drivers can also switch off the DSC system altogether and engage 2WD mode, where drive power is relayed solely to the rear wheels.

Traction can be finely adjusted through 10 stages via the M Traction Control in the same way as on the rear-wheel-drive models.

This form of power transmission without any intervention from the chassis control systems to stabilise the vehicle allows seasoned drivers to enjoy a driving experience of remarkable purity and hone their skills with help of the M Drift Analyser.

Drivers can set and store their preferred M xDrive mode as part of the two individual M1 and M2 configurations, together with the settings for engine characteristics, damper response, steering characteristics, braking system and other parameters.

Either configuration can then be called up instantly at any time by pressing one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

Individual M feeling: four models each with their own character

With the addition of all-wheel-drive model variants to the range, BMW M now offers an unrivalled variety of high-performance mid-size models in New Zealand.

The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupé offer a unique selling point over their rivals with their combination of rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Drive power in the BMW M3 Competition Sedan and BMW M4 Competition Coupé is likewise directed to the rear wheels, though on these models via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

This pair will shortly be joined by the new BMW M3 Competition Sedan and BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive.

The Isle of Man Green M3 Competition Sedan and Sao Paulo Yellow M4 Competition Coupé emerged from matching decorated containers carried in via Black Hawk helicopters, and showcased their dynamic abilities on closed runways at the North Shore Aerodrome to a small group of invited guests.

Following a short presentation from BMW New Zealand, professional drivers then took guests on taxi rides on the closed course, specifically designed to showcase the dynamic abilities of the two high performance machines.

Munich. With yet another new sales record, the BMW M GmbH continued to grow also in the 2020 fiscal year. Despite the effects of the Corona pandemic on the market, it was possible to increase the number of BMW M automobiles sold by 6 percent to 144,218 units. Thanks to this result, the subsidiary company of the BMW Group with the status of an independent company has significantly strengthened its market leadership within the competitive environment first gained in 2019. “The fact that we were able to conclude this exceptionally challenging year with yet a further record is great validation of our consistent growth strategy,” says Markus Flasch, chairman of the board of the BMW M GmbH. “We can be particularly proud of the fact that we were able not only to defend our market dominance as the most successful provider of performance and high-performances automobiles, but also to have even expanded it.”

The further increase in sales figures was due, inter alia, to the successful market launch of the models BMW X5 M (combined fuel consumption: 13.1 – 12.6 l/100 km according to WLTP, 13.0 – 12.8 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 298 – 287 g/km according to WLTP, 296 – 287 g/km according to NEDC) and BMW X6 M (combined fuel consumption: 13.4 – 13.1 l/100 km according to WLTP, 13.1 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 305 – 300 g/km according to WLTP, 301 g/km according to NEDC). With V8 power units delivering up to 460 kW/625 hp, BMW M automobiles from the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupe segment offer a particularly characteristic high-performance experience. Likewise, the special edition model BMW M2 CS (combined fuel consumption: 10.1 – 9.2 l/100 km according to WLTP, 10.4 – 9.4 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 229 – 210 g/km according to WLTP, 238 – 214 g/km according to NEDC), which serves as the basis for a new competition vehicle from BMW Motorsport, has also received a positive response. In the high-performance model sector alone, it was possible to increase the number of worldwide deliveries by 4 percent vs. the year 2019.

Moreover, it was predominantly the performance automobiles developed for the new BMW 3 Series and the new BMW 4 Series that helped boost the sales of the BMW M GmbH so decisively. With powerful straight six-cylinder petrol and diesel power plants, specific suspension tuning and stand-alone design features, the top-of-the-range offer for the BMW 3 Series Sedan, the BMW 3 Series Touring and the BMW 4 Series Coupe also guarantees that characteristic M experience in the premium mid-range segment, coupled with unrestricted suitability for everyday use and long distances.

Growing demand in all relevant markets.

Technology transferred from motor racing, precisely coordinated features in the areas of drive systems, suspension, aerodynamics, interior design and operation as well as the resulting authentic character of BMW M automobiles, create a fascination, which continued in 2020 to captivate an increasing number of performance-oriented customers throughout the world. For example, in the USA, the most important market for BMW M automobiles, as well as in China, new records were achieved. In both Russia and Korea, it was possible to increase sales by more than 60 percent, and in Italy by 47 percent. And in the UK, too, the number of vehicles delivered exceeded our expectations. “We notice a steadily growing demand in all relevant markets for BMW M automobiles,” explains Thomas Felbermair, head of Sales and Marketing at BMW M GmbH. “Because of this and thanks to the engagement of our strong dealer network, we have been outstandingly successful in coping with the challenges posed by the pandemic.”

Ready to go: BMW M5 CS, BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe.

Looking towards the future, the initial focus shifts to the world premiere of the BMW M5 CS, which will take place in January 2021. A special edition of the BMW M5 will then be available for the first time – with outstanding performance and exclusive motorsport characteristics. Following that, the main focus will be on the market launch of the new BMW M3 Sedan starting in March 2021 (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 – 10.3 l/100 km according to WLTP, 10.8 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 241 – 236 g/km according to WLTP, 248 g/km according to NEDC) and the new BMW M4 Coupe (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 – 10.3 l/100 km according to WLTP, 10.8 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 240 –  235 g/km according to WLTP, 248 g/km according to NEDC). The two high-performance automobiles represent the essence of that unmistakable M feeling. Immediately after their world premiere, the new model generation aroused keen interest around the globe.

In future, the wishes of the M Community will be fulfilled by extraordinary diversity: Each variant with classic manual shift will be complemented by a Competition model featuring an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Moreover, in the summer of 2021, the four-wheel drive system M xDrive will be added for the first time to the drive portfolio for the BMW M3 and the BMW M4. And the BMW M4 Convertible will also be launched in time for the warm season. On the other hand, the first BMW M3 Touring is still undergoing the series development process.

A glance into the future: continued growth, new M feeling through electrification, and an anniversary. 

“It is remarkable that it was possible to achieve the new sales record even before the launch of our most important models,” says Markus Flasch. “The new BMW M3 and BMW M4 generation offers us the promise of dynamic growth in 2021 as well.” Moreover, he now also looks forward to presenting a completely new manifestation of the distinctive M feeling. These moments in my life really shaped my passion for BMW, so working on this project with them has brought everything full circle.”

Fieg recently acquired his own example of the legendary BMW E30 M3. And BMW M GmbH lined up this consummately prepared first-generation M3 for the official presentation of the collaboration at the Kith pop‑up store in Brooklyn on 23 October. Alongside it was the unique new representative of the latest, sixth-generation version of the high-performance model. Like Fieg’s car, the BMW M4 Design Study by KITH is painted in the Cinnabar Red shade originally used for the E30 M3. This paint finish is no longer available for the regular BMW range, but was selected here specially for the BMW M4 Design Study by KITH to emphasise the connection between the two cars. The M4 Competition badge on the model’s boot lid has been replaced by a black Kith logo with BMW M stripes in the same style. This logo also appears in illuminated form below the head restraints in the M Carbon bucket seats, and Kith lettering is embossed into the black leather of the head restraints and centre console.

The leather with embossed lettering selected for this very individual model was also used for the seat covers in Fieg’s BMW E30 M3. Here, the Kith logo with BMW M stripes has silver lettering, while a special version of the period BMW logo adorns the bonnet, boot lid and steering wheel, with “Kith” replacing “BMW”.

Merging logos is a hallmark of the many partnerships Kith has forged with other globally renowned companies. But this is the first time BMW has altered its badge for a collaboration partner. The fusion logo created for the 150 units of the BMW M4 Competition x KITH adds an extra ring around the BMW roundel in the BMW M colours light blue, dark blue and red. Plus, there are details in bright lettering focusing on Kith and the collaboration. The rear of the BMW M4 Competition x KITH also has the black Kith logo with BMW M stripes. The special-edition models are available exclusively with the matte paint finishes Frozen Black, Frozen Dark Silver and Frozen Brilliant White in homage to the three most popular colours for the BMW E30 M3 back in the day.

One of the main highlights of the special-edition models is the Kith carbon-fibre roof design. For this optional extra, grey Kith lettering with BMW M stripes is woven into the roof surface. M Compound brakes with red callipers bearing the M logo come as standard. These are clearly visible through the double spokes of the M forged wheels 826M bi-colour / Jet Black, high-gloss (front: 19-inch, rear: 20-inch).

Inside the BMW M4 Competition x KITH the tri-colour M Carbon bucket seats feature the BMW M colours light blue and red which add striking flourishes to the Merino full-leather trim in Black. As in Ronnie Fieg’s BMW E30 M3, Kith lettering is embossed into the black leather of the front and rear head restraints and centre armrest of the BMW M4 Competition x KITH. The centre console features an exclusive badge with the Kith logo and BMW M stripes. The illuminated M badge below the front head restraints also has Kith lettering.

The special-edition model has the same technical profile as the BMW M4 Competition Coupé. The new six-cylinder in-line engine is cut from the high-revving BMW M GmbH mould and uses the latest version of M TwinPower Turbo technology to produce 375 kW (510 hp), while torque peaks at 650 Nm (479 lb-ft). The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission Drivelogic is fitted as standard. The sprint from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 3.9 seconds, while 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached in 12.5 seconds. As well as classical rear-wheel drive, the BMW M4 Competition x KITH can – like the BMW M4 Competition Coupé – be specified as an option with M xDrive all-wheel drive.

In addition to the standard equipment of the BMW M4 Competition Coupé and the bespoke Kith collaboration features, the special-edition model can also be ordered with a selection of other extras. Like the M Compound brakes, M forged wheels and M Carbon bucket seats, the M Carbon exterior package, BMW Laserlight and BMW Individual lights Shadowline are standard. Plus, the cabin features Carbon Fibre interior trim strips and controls with electroplated applications. Deliveries of the limited-edition BMW M4 Competition x KITH will begin in summer 2021.

The all-new BMW M3 and M4 – the latest high performance offerings from the legendary BMW M outfit – will arrive in New Zealand as top-spec Competition only variants when local deliveries take place in Q1 2021.

Both models, which were unveiled today, combine segment leading performance, backed by four decades of racing know-how and new-generation styling packages that provide dominant and unmistakable presence. 

Specified for New Zealand in Competition trim only, the new BMW M3 and M4 Competition are both powered by a formidable six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology.

Both cars develop 375kW of power and 650Nm of torque, paired to an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

Both variants will be offered in rear-wheel-drive initially, before the acclaimed BMW M xDrive system becomes available later next year. The provision of M xDrive marks a first for BMW in this segment.

The significant dynamic advances made over their predecessors are the product of a typically rigorous M development and tuning processes conducted in part alongside testing for the new BMW M4 GT3 race car.

Further common ground between the new BMW M cars is the spectrum of emotions sparked by their powertrain and chassis, the visually expressive design and the new, M-specific control and operation system.

These range from the joy of driving a car luxuriously over long distances, comfortably adapting settings for dynamic everyday use, and switching over instantly to the thrill of a sporting machine let off the leash on race circuits.

Mighty six-cylinder engine with instantaneous power delivery and signature BMW M high-revving characteristics

The engines powering the new M3 and M4 Competition blend the high-revving tendencies for which M models are renowned with the latest version of M TwinPower Turbo technology.

The result is a new high point for six-cylinder in-line petrol units from BMW in the areas of output and torque.

Lightweight design and exceptional rigidity are standout attributes of the performance-maximising components of the base engine.

Two turbochargers with indirect charge air cooling, a flow-optimised air intake system and a petrol direct injection system working with maximum pressure of 350 bar help to generate the engine’s instantaneous power delivery and appetite for revs, which it sustains without interruption into the higher reaches of the engine speed range.

The engine fitted to M3 and M4 Competition maintains peak torque across a wide rev band, with 650Nm on tap between 2,750 and 5,500rpm. Maximum output of 375kW is developed at 6,250rpm, with the engine’s redline arriving at 7,200 rpm.

These performance characteristics deliver a deeply impressive driving experience. The new BMW M3 Competition Sedan and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé each accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and from 0 to 200km/h in 12.5 seconds.

A model-specific M Performance exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps provides an emotionally rich soundtrack.

A bespoke cooling system ensures optimal operating temperatures are maintained at all times for all powertrain components – in everyday driving over short distances and through town, but also when pushing to the limits of performance on the track.

A central cooling module is joined by two remote high-temperature radiators in the wheel arches. The system also includes an additional engine oil cooler and separate transmission oil cooler.

The accumulated motorsport expertise of BMW M has also made its presence felt in the development of the oil supply system.

The engine’s oil sump has two separate chambers and an integrated suction channel.
An additional suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to draw lubricant from the smaller chamber, which steps in when extra capacity is needed.

This ensures a reliable supply of oil at all times, even under extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, rear-wheel-drive and M xDrive

The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic in the Competition models is distinguished by ratio spacing perfectly tuned to the engine’s characteristics and a broad overall ratio spread.

It enables both fully automatic gear changes and manual shifts with the M-specific selector lever or shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The transmission’s shift characteristics are adjusted using the Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever. The driver can access three clearly distinct setups in both automatic and manual mode.

For the first time in the history of the BMW M3 and BMW M4, customers will be able to specify an all-wheel-drive system as an alternative to traditional rear-wheel drive.

The M xDrive system has a rear-wheel bias and links up with the Active M Differential at the rear axle. The driver can access the Setup menu to choose between 4WD and 4WD Sport modes, the latter directing a greater proportion of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels.

Switching off DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) brings 2WD mode into the equation. Sending power to the rear wheels only and suspending stabilising interventions from the control systems treats experienced drivers to an uncorrupted, no holds barred driving experience.

BMW will offer the M xDrive system on the M3 and M4 by late 2021.

M-specific chassis with extremely high torsional rigidity

The extremely high torsional rigidity of the body and chassis mounting is a key factor in providing the combination of dynamism, agility and precision for which BMW M models are renowned.

A model-specific package of bracing elements for the engine compartment, a front axle subframe with aluminium shear panel, underfloor bracing elements and a rear axle subframe with a rigid connection to the body all play a part in the cars’ precisely controllable handling in even dynamically intense situations.

Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers and M-specific kinematics and elastokinematics for the front and rear axles are standard features of the new BMW M3 Competition Sedan and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé.

They also have M Servotronic steering with a variable ratio and an M-specific version of the integrated braking system, which presents the driver with two different brake response and pedal feel settings.

The introduction of an integrated wheel slip limitation function allows the DSC system to work with increased precision.

In addition, the standard inclusion of M Dynamic Mode opens the door to a particularly sporty driving experience, complete with controlled drifting ability.

Standard specification also features forged M light-alloy wheels – in 18-inch format at the front axle and 19-inch at the rear.

Tyres are 275/40 ZR18 at the front and 285/35 ZR19 at the rear.

Eye-catching design dials up the emotional appeal

The distinctive body design of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé sends out a bolder statement than ever of the performance supremacy and emotionally engaging driving experience on offer.

M-specific design features firmly invested in the functional requirements of high-performance sports cars are integrated harmoniously into the modern design language.

Contributors to the visually striking appearance of the two models include the M-specific version of the large, vertical BMW kidney grille with horizontal bars, powerfully sculpted wheel arches with eye-catching M gills and the prominently extended side sills with attachment parts for the front and rear aprons.

The sedan and coupé also have a roof made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) with aerodynamically optimised fins, a rear spoiler and the two pairs of large exhaust tailpipes that are now a customary feature of M cars.

Full-LED headlights are fitted as standard, while Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight can be specified as an option.

The selection of exterior paint finishes includes new and exclusive shades Sao Paulo Yellow non-metallic, Toronto Red metallic and Isle of Man Green metallic. An optional M Carbon exterior package and model-specific BMW M Performance Parts can be ordered from launch.

Among the interior design highlights are clearly structured surfaces and an ergonomically impeccable cockpit design that ensure the driver’s focus remains one hundred per cent on the intense driving experience.

Newly developed, electrically adjustable M sport seats and fine-grain Merino leather trim with extended features come as standard, with seat ventilation also available for the first time.

A standout highlight of the options list are the new M Carbon bucket seats with a structure-based design, which combine racing functionality with a lightweight construction, comfort over long distances and sumptuous workmanship.

These innovative seats have integral head restraints which can be dismantled for track driving, an illuminated model badge and electric adjustment. Their race car-inspired structure also enables the use of multi-point racing seat belts.

M-specific control/operation system for a customisable performance experience

The control and display system of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé comprises an array of new features which play their role in the cars’ supremely engaging driving experience.

The optional M Drive Professional, which makes its debut on the new models, has been conceived specifically for track driving. It includes the innovative new M Traction Control, which allows the new integrated wheel slip limitation function of the DSC system to be adjusted (through 10 stages) to the driver’s personal preferences and needs.

Other elements of M Drive Professional are the M Drift Analyser, which records and rates driving stats posted in dynamic cornering manoeuvres, and the M Laptimer, which supplies lap times and other information generated during track sessions.

The Setup button on the centre console provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, chassis, steering and braking system, plus – depending on the model and specification – the M xDrive system, Gear Shift Assistant and traction control.

Two individually composed configurations for the overall vehicle setup can then be stored and called up again instantaneously at any time using the M buttons on the steering wheel.

The control panel on the centre console also houses the M Mode button as standard. This can be used to adjust the responses and characteristics of the driver assistance systems and the displays in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display to deliver a driving experience suited to the situation at hand and worthy of the M badge.

The driver can choose from ROAD and SPORT settings, with the TRACK mode developed for outings on race circuits added to the armoury when M Drive Professional is specified.

Extensive standard specification and high-quality options deliver elevated levels of comfort, safety and performance

An array of new additions to the standard and optional equipment lists ensure the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé raise the bar further not only in terms of racing flair but also comfort and functionality.

Cutting-edge driver assistance systems ease the driver’s workload in monotonous or unclear situations on the road.

Both models come as standard with Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear, Front Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning, plus the Speed Limit Info road sign detection system.

Options include the Driving Assistant Professional, complete with the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Navigation function, Emergency Lane Assistant, BMW Drive Recorder and the latest generation of the BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific content.

The optional Parking Assistant comprises functions such as the Reversing Assistant.

Standard equipment including three-zone automatic climate control, LED interior lighting including ambient lighting, and a hi-fi speaker system enhances comfort in everyday driving and over longer journeys.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional – with its fully digital display grouping, cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant – also comes as standard for the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé.

Additionally, updated smartphone integration enables the use of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto via the car’s operating system.

A steel roof with integral glass tilt/sliding sunroof is available as a no-cost option for both models as an alternative to the standard carbon-fibre version.

The new M Race Track Package, meanwhile, brings about a targeted reduction in vehicle weight.

This package includes M Carbon ceramic brakes, weight-minimised M light-alloy wheels (available as an option with semi-slick tyres) and the M Carbon bucket seats.

Want an extra-large and highly variable luggage compartment in a high-performance sports car? What is presently still a rhetorical question will soon become a concrete offer.

A few weeks prior to the world premiere of the all-new BMW M3 Sedan, there are increasing signs of unparalleled model diversity in the range of premium mid-range BMW M automobiles.

Together with the all-new BMW M4 Coupe, the new BMW M3 Sedan will be celebrating its world premiere in September 2020. It is also no secret that the new edition of the BMW M4 Convertible is to follow next year.

However, attentive observers will soon be able to catch a glimpse of the prototype of a new high-performance automobile. In Garching near Munich, home of the BMW M GmbH, work is being carried out on a further dream-come-true: For the first time in the history of the BMW M GmbH, the model range will be complemented by a BMW M3 Touring.

M-specific performance combined with an increase in available space and the intelligent functionality of a Touring model – this was previously reserved exclusively for the BMW M5.

Both in its second generation in 1992 and in its fourth in 2007, the high-performance business sedan was accompanied by a Touring.

This is not the first time both the M community and developers at the BMW M GmbH have been fascinated by idea of transferring this vehicle concept to the BMW M3. Exactly 20 years ago, a similar prototype was launched based on the third generation of the BMW M3.

Back then, M engineers set out to prove that the high flexibility of a Touring platform could be seamlessly integrated with a high-performance sports car, along with the stringent manufacturing quality required for an M car. For the sixth generation of the BMW M3, it will not end with mere theoretical considerations and technical tests.

The six-cylinder M TwinPower turbo engine beneath the bonnet has been set. Five doors and a highly variable luggage compartment are precisely what fans of this model have been asking for. The new BMW M3 Touring fulfils the hopes of all those who wish to take the M-specific interplay of racing-oriented performance and everyday suitability to the extreme.

Never has a premium mid-range class estate car offered so much driving fun and precision. Never has there been more functional utility available in a thoroughbred sports car. Further speculation on engine and performance is quite welcome, but wide axles, conspicuously large front air intakes and four exhaust tailpipes at the rear will leave no doubt that this is an thoroughbred M machine.

The first BMW M3 Touring is still in the early stage of its approximately two-year series development process.

As in the case of other BMW M high-performance sports cars, the following also applies to the BMW M3 Touring: whenever a prototype has been given the go-ahead for test drives on public roads, it means that the decisive step towards series maturity has been taken.

Not only will it soon be regularly sighted, the intensive testing and tuning process for the BMW M3 Touring will also take it to the world’s toughest proving ground: the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring.

That’s because the first BMW M3 Touring is, after all, first and foremost a BMW M3.

Munich. The BMW M GmbH is currently preparing the generation change for the iconic sports cars. With driving dynamics tests performed under racetrack conditions, the series development process for the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 10.9 – 10.5 l/100 km [25.9 – 26.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 249 – 239 g/km, preliminary data) is entering its crucial phase. With a significant increase in performance vs. the predecessor models and an M-specific suspension setup, newly developed straight six-cylinder engines once again set benchmarks in the segment of high-performance sedans and coupés of the premium midrange class. Comprehensive innovations in the areas of drive, wheel suspension, springs, dampers and braking technology require thorough testing on public roads at the BMW Group testing centres in Miramas, Southern France, in the Swedish town of Arjeplog as well as on a number of different racetracks.

Traditionally, the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring sets the yardstick for the perfect interaction between drive and suspension technology in every situation. However, because the performance characteristics of a BMW M automobile have to convince not only there but also on the most varied racetrack profiles, the test engineers always expand the test programme to include further circuits such as the current test drives with camouflaged prototypes of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé at the Sachsenring.

A few months before their world premiere mid-September 2020, the dynamic potential of the new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé is already clearly perceptible. Inspiring agility, outstanding dynamics and precisely controllable handling even in extreme sporting situations characterise their driving behaviour. The balance between superior performance and unrestricted everyday suitability so typical of an M attains a new level. “With each BMW M automobile, we put motorsport technology on the road,” says Markus Flasch, chairman of the board of the BMW M GmbH. “The new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé embody this principle in a particularly intensive way, because both models stand unmistakably in the tradition of the most successful touring car worldwide. And results of the test drives show us that the new model generation is significantly superior to that of its predecessors in terms of performance.”

Like all current high-performance-automobiles from the BMW M GmbH, the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé are offered in two performance levels: Besides a 353 kW/480 hp variant with a 6-speed manual shift, there is also the choice of a Competition model with 375 kW/510 hp and an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. “For customers who prefer a puristic performance experience and particularly intense interaction with their vehicle, the model variants with a manual transmission constitute an offer that is unique in this segment,” explains Dirk Häcker, head of Development M Automobiles and BMW Individual. “On the other hand, with the Competition versions of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé, we are addressing maximum dynamics in regards power development and transfer – initially with classic rear-wheel drive and, at a later date, also in conjunction with the latest version of our four-wheel drive system M xDrive.”

Compared with the predecessor models, the straight six-cylinder engines featured by the new high-performance sports cars deliver a maximum output increase of 36 kW/49 hp and 44 kW/60 hp (Competition models) and a maximum torque of up to 650 Nm. Moreover, thanks to M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving concept, the power plant impresses with performance characteristics derived from motor racing. The power unit excels through extraordinarily spontaneous response in every speed range and is also deployed in the BMW M4 GT3, which will become the new top-of-the-rage model from the BMW M GmbH in the customer sport segment as from the 2022 season. 

With a meticulously operated testing programme, development and testing engineers at the BMW M GmbH are currently making sure that the M-specific suspension components are tuned to the engine’s performance characteristics to such an extent that they guarantee the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé places in the first row of the starting grid in their vehicle segment. The around 3,670-metre stretch at the tradition-steeped Sachsenring, which is known as the long-standing venue of the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) racing series, also offers the ideal prerequisites for this purpose. BMW New Zealand will introduce the latest iteration of the legendary M5 super sedan to the local market in October this year.

The new car will further elevate the renowned dynamic prowess of the model, thanks to extensive chassis tweaks, a new styling package and updated interior elements.

The M5 is the fourth new high performance M car to touch down in New Zealand after the M8, X5M and X6M in 2020, reflecting the importance of the country, the #1 market for BMW M globally in terms of M/MPA model split.

Exterior design: stylistic fine-tuning

As with the new BMW 5 Series, the M5’s front design is characterised by an updated kidney grille that drops down further into the front apron.

A one-piece high-gloss black surround design frames both elements of the grille, while M-specific double bars in combination with an M badge provide unmistakable hints of the vehicle’s pedigree, status and capability.

The front apron has bolder contouring and larger air intakes at the sides to deliver an aggressive look while adding to cooling performance. The expansive central air intake has a hexagonal shape and incorporates the oil cooler and the radar sensor for the Active Cruise Control (ACC) system.

New L-shaped daytime running light tubes add a dynamic flourish to the redesigned headlights, and new BMW Individual Shadow Line light module bases provide a dark-tinted accent to the BMW Laserlight system.

The aluminium bonnet, front side panels with signature M gills, streamlined M exterior mirrors and a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof join the BMW kidney grille’s double bars as hallmark design features.

The thinner walls of the M-specific twin tailpipes also create a greater sense of high-tech precision.

The muscular rear apron with large diffuser has also been restyled, as have the three-dimensional LED rear lights with refreshed light graphics that reframe the now-familiar BMW L shape.

M5 Competition set apart by black styling details

Additional black styling details underline the elite status of the M5 Competition.

The BMW kidney grille surround, mesh on the M gills, exterior mirror caps and the boot lid spoiler all have a high-gloss black finish. Black inserts are also integrated in the rear apron.

Black M5 Competition badges adorn the kidney grille, gills and the boot lid, while the door sill plates have an illuminated logo. The tailpipes of the standard M Sport exhaust system are additionally finished in black chrome.

Five new paint finishes are available for the new model including Brands Hatch Grey, Motegi Red metallic, Tanzanite Blue II metallic, Aventurine Red II metallic and matte Frozen Bluestone metallic finishes from BMW Individual.

Champagne Quartz metallic offered previously has been renamed Alvit Grey metallic.

Light-alloy wheel options now also include the 20-inch M double-spoke design in polished Orbit Grey familiar from the BMW M8.

Larger central display and new operating concept with M modes

The introduction of a new operating concept and a 12.3-inch centre control display mean the cabin of the new BMW M5 Competition is more driver-centric than ever.

The new screen makes it even easier to keep a clear eye on the myriad functions associated with the driving dynamics systems and BMW M xDrive all-wheel drive.

Two new buttons on the centre console – like those found in the new BMW M8 – provide more direct access to system settings and the various readouts in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display.

At the press of the M Mode button, the driver can toggle swiftly between the ROAD and SPORT settings. In the default ROAD setting, all driver assistance systems are fully activated.

With the SPORT setting engaged, the active driver assistance systems (in the configuration set by the driver) only transmit alerts on speed limits and overtaking restrictions.

This mode allows all interventions in the braking and steering systems to be disabled, aside from those made by the collision warning with braking function and the Evasion Assistant.

SPORT mode also switches both the instrument cluster and the Head-Up Display to a special M View.

The Setup button takes drivers straight to the configuration menu. Pressing the button positioned above the M Mode button allows programming of an individual configuration for the powertrain and chassis options.

Simplified operation using the touchscreen display or iDrive Controller makes it straightforward for the driver to choose different settings for the engine, suspension, steering and M xDrive system.

The two red-painted M1 and M2 buttons next to the gearshift paddles on the M multifunction steering wheel enable rapid movement between the setups.

They allow drivers to configure two individual setups, comprising their choice of M xDrive, DSC, engine, transmission, damper and steering characteristics, as well as the appearance of M View in the Head-Up Display.

TRACK mode – which is enabled by holding down the M Mode button – is new for the new M5 Competition and designed exclusively for use on race circuits.

This mode deactivates all comfort and safety functions of the driver assistance systems while also muting the audio system and switching off the central display to keep the driver’s attention on the road ahead.

In addition, the instrument cluster switches to M View and the Head-Up Display dispenses with readouts from the driver assistance systems. Automatic activation of the hazard warning lights in response to emergency braking is suppressed and the collision warning system is also deactivated.

M multifunction seats exude luxurious feel and support for dynamic driving

M multifunction seats with integrated head restraints, an illuminated M5 logo and extended functions are key highlights of the luxurious and sport-focused M5 Competition cabin.

The seats are trimmed in merino leather upholstery with multi-way electric adjustment, while the black/midrand beige option is now also available as per other new generation BMW M models including the M8, X5 M and X6 M.

Imposing power from high-revving V8 powerplant

The V8 unit under the bonnet of the BMW M5 Competition goes about its business in race car-derived, high-revving style with imposing muscularity and supreme power delivery.

Peak torque of 750Nm arrives from as low down as 1,800rpm and is sustained at this elevated level all the way to 5,860rpm. Maximum output of 460kW is achieved at 6,000rpm.

Engine characteristics can be changed at the touch of a button from the basic EFFICIENT mode to SPORT and SPORT+, resulting in even more willing response to movements of the accelerator.

The BMW M5 Competition completes the standard sprint in just 3.3 seconds and races to 200km/h in a staggering 10.8 seconds.

The BMW M5 Competition’s M Sport exhaust system features a dual-branch and flap-controlled design that produces a soundtrack to match the towering performance characteristics.

The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission enables extraordinarily short shift times and fast, precise responses to every nudge of the accelerator.

The Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector allows three modes to be chosen for efficient, sporty or dynamically intense track driving – the latter involving extremely rapid gearshifts. The driver can use both the selector lever and the shift paddles on the steering wheel to intervene manually.

Bespoke engine mounts provide immediate response, sharper turn-in

Bespoke engine mounts with a stiffer spring rate are among the special features of the BMW M5 Competition.

The drive unit’s firmer connection to the vehicle’s structure is clearly perceptible, resulting in even more rapid engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain.

The M5 also turns into corners with noticeably greater directness and precision thanks to the additional stiffness in the mounts.

High performance meets everyday usability

The highly advanced M xDrive system and centralised intelligent control for the Active M Differential help negotiate the dynamic tightrope between full everyday usability and exceptional road or track performance.

As an alternative to variable all-wheel drive mode (4WD) with rear-biased baseline setup, the M5’s handling characteristics can be altered by varying degrees, culminating in 2WD mode.

This pure rear-wheel drive setting with no DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) treats accomplished drivers to completely unadulterated driving pleasure.

The M Servotronic steering can also be adjusted in its response, with a choice of COMFORT and SPORT modes, as can Variable Damper Control (VDC).

VDC can be set to COMFORT for impeccable everyday usability, SPORT to enhance sporty driving on country roads and give an ideal handling profile for laps at the track or SPORT+ to maximise dynamic performance on smooth asphalt, with wheel and body movements minimised.

As well as a seven-millimetre drop in ride height and other well-conceived tweaks to the suspension and springs, the BMW M5 Competition’s setup benefits from further upgrades which take into account the car’s extra power.

Its talents are showcased most prominently on the race track. New shock absorbers from the BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupé both improve on-the-limit handling and bring extra comfort to the driving experience.

Bumps and ruts in the road surface are passed through the body – and therefore to the passengers – to a far lesser degree, and this is achieved without blunting the car’s sporting edge and precision at high or low speeds.

The BMW M5 Competition leaves the factory with forged, bi-colour, 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in a Y-spoke design and mixed-size tyres (front: 275/35 R 20, rear: 285/35 R 20).

M Compound brakes fitted as standard

The brake system is headlined by M Compound brakes that feature perforated, inner-vented brake discs and six-piston fixed calipers bearing the M logo at the front and single-piston floating calipers with an integrated parking brake at the rear.

As well as the standard blue painted finish, the calipers can now be finished in high-gloss black or high-gloss red as an option.

Optional M carbon ceramic brakes are recognisable by gold calipers with M logo (six-piston fixed calipers at the front, single-piston floating calipers at the rear).

The carbon ceramic brakes withstand wear exceptionally well, are 23 kilograms lighter, provide even greater braking performance and thermal stability and improved fade resistance.

The new BMW M5 Competition will launch in New Zealand this October with full pricing and specification details to be revealed in the lead-up to launch.

BMW Group New Zealand will launch the third generation of the X5 M and X6 M models in May 2020 with stunning levels of performance, design and dynamic capabilities.

Both models will be offered for the first time in Competition guise only, guaranteeing local customers the highest possible level of specification and power output. 

The new models combine the acclaimed X5 and X6 platforms with the most powerful engine in the segment: the mighty 460kW and 750Nm BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine.

These figures mark a 37kW power hike on the previous generation X5 M and X6 M engine and help to propel the new X5 M and X6 M from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds. This is four tenths of a second faster than the outgoing models.  

Technical highlights of the new engine include twin-scroll turbochargers located in the V of the engine for optimum efficiency and response, a forged crankshaft for exceptional torsional force resistance and a motorsport oil supply system that integrates baffling and active suction in the sump to deliver lubrication where needed for track use.

The cooling system also evokes a racecar set up with 10 individual coolers including two water cooled intercoolers for the turbochargers and oil coolers for engine and transmission.

Drive is sent to the ground via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, which adopts the same M control concept as the BMW M8 Competition vehicles.

The standard fitment M Sport exhaust system is characterised by four 100mm black chrome tailpipes. The exhaust delivers a loud, emotive soundtrack that emphasises the high revving and considerable output of the BMW TwinPower Turbo V8.

Chassis enhancements include Adaptive M Suspension Professional, which highlights the dynamic potential of the X5 M and X6 M with multiple modes, and the precise and direct M Servotronic steering. The latter is also adjustable between COMFORT and SPORT settings. 

Both vehicles also feature BMW M xDrive and Active M differential to deliver maximum traction and elevated dynamics for all driving situations. The fully variable M xDrive has a rear-biased set-up that brings the front axle into play only when the rear wheels are at the limits of adhesion.

The Active M differential is a needs-based differential lock that optimises traction, handling and stability elements.

The racetrack ready M compound brake system, featuring six piston fixed calipers at the front with 395mm drilled and inner-ventilated discs and single-piston floating calipers with 380mm discs at the rear, delivers astonishing stopping power. The system can bring the X5 M and X6 M from 100km/h to rest in just 32 metres.

The X5 M and X6 M also follow the M8 Competition in offering two levels of braking feel via the COMFORT AND SPORT settings.

Both the X5 M and X6 M match the outstanding performance with striking styling and design aspects. Large intakes provide a dynamic aesthetic quality while ensuring an effective supply of air to the engine, transmission and brakes.
Short overhangs and dynamic rooflines further highlight the X5 M and X6 M models as high performance flagships.

In addition, the wheel and tyre packages provide a dominant appearance while also contributing to outstanding roadholding. Both vehicles feature M light alloy wheels with star-spoke style design shod with 295/35 section tyres on the front and 315/30 section tyres on the rear.

The interior of both the X5 M and X6 M combine purposeful BMW M elements with luxury appointments that provide a premium cabin ambience. It features M multifunction sport seats trimmed in full leather ‘Merino’ upholstery and BMW Individual Alcantara headliner.
It is the first time this upholstery and headliner have been offered as standard equipment. 

A suite of advanced safety and convenience systems including BMW Driving Assistant Professional, Parking Assistant Plus and BMW Live Cockpit Professional with twin 12.3-inch LCD colour displays complement the supreme performance of both models.

The X5 M Competition Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV)-style model is priced at $219,900, while the X6 M Competition Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) is $225,600.

As with all New Zealand-new BMW vehicles a five year warranty, three year service inclusive programme and five year roadside assist coverage is fully included.

All maintenance requirements for the new BMW X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition are controlled by the Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system.

With CBS, sensors and advanced algorithms monitor and calculate the conditions in which a vehicle is used, including mileage, time elapsed since its last service, fuel consumption and how a vehicle is driven. Based on the information captured, maintenance requirements are determined, identifying whether an annual vehicle inspection or oil service is due.

The first ever BMW M8 Competition Coupé and Gran Coupé models are set to take the BMW 8 Series range to an even higher level of performance with both models available in New Zealand by Q2, 2020.

The two and four-door sports sedans benefit from the most powerful engine ever developed by BMW M for a production model: the 4.4-litre V8 with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that has a peak output of 460kW.

Regardless of the driving style, the all new BMW M8 Competition Coupé and Gran Coupé provide a race car-like feel and feature an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic for precise shifts.

The powertrain, chassis and aerodynamics were tested extensively at BMW Group’s proving grounds, the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and other race circuits.

In addition, both models incorporate the celebrated M xDrive all-wheel-drive system that seamlessly transfers the engine’s power to the road via a centrally controlled interaction with the rear axle-mounted Active M Differential.

The M xDrive system has a rear-biased configuration in its default 4WD mode. Drivers can access a Setup menu to select 4WD Sport mode, which sends an even higher proportion of drive to the rear wheels. Deactivation of DSC brings 2WD mode into play, with drive fed exclusively through the rear wheels.

During vehicle development, track use demand prompted the implementation of model specific chassis technology, as well as the use of extremely stiff mountings connecting the chassis to the body.

The M8 Competition Coupé and Gran Coupé both include electronically controlled dampers and electromechanical M Servotronic steering, while a new M-specific integrated braking system enables two brake pedal settings to suit specific driving styles and situations.

Adjustment of the brake pedal functionality is accessible through the Setup function, where settings for the engine, dampers and steering can also be personalised.

Two individually composed variants of the M Setup can be stored and called up using the buttons on the steering wheel. The M Mode button on the centre console also allows driver assistance systems and the instrument cluster/Head-Up Display to be configured as required.

Drivers can select TRACK mode in addition to ROAD and SPORT modes depending on their preference.

The BMW M8 Competition Coupé and Gran Coupé are characterised by M design elements which leave no doubt as to the model’s extraordinary high-performance abilities.

The dramatic new exterior styling of both models displays a dynamically stretched silhouette, muscular shoulders and a distinctive standalone rear-end design.

The two models complement these aspects with larger air intakes at the front, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, a rear spoiler and CFRP roof.

The wheelbase of the M8 Competition Gran Coupé is 200 millimetres longer than that of the two-door BMW M8 Competition Coupé, allowing for exceptional levels of space in the rear compartment. The rear seat design evokes a sport-focused feel with individual character and integrated head restraints.

Other interior design highlights of the M8 Competition Gran Coupé include exclusive M Sport front seats with integrated illuminated M8 badging and bi-colour leather trim. The instrument cluster, Control Display and Head-Up Display also provide the driver with M-specific readouts.

The BMW M4 Edition ///M Heritage (combined fuel consumption: 10.0 – 9.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 227 – 213 g/km) will make its world debut on the legendary racetrack in the Eifel. The special edition of the BMW M4 Coupe, which forms the basis of the BMW M4 DTM deployed by BMW M Motorsport, fascinates with an exclusive exterior and interior look reflecting the impressive tradition of the high-performance racing cars. The BMW M4 Edition ///M Heritage, powered by a 331 kW/450 hp straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology will be produced and sold worldwide between November 2019 and April 2020 as an edition model limited to 750 units.

Light blue, dark blue and red – these are the colours by which motorsport fans immediately recognize the BMW M GmbH logo. Immediately after the founding of the BMW Motorsport GmbH in 1972, the characteristic colours already adorned these racing cars, which were based on the BMW 3.0 CSL and became highly successful in touring car racing. Since then, the distinctive stripes in the three classic BMW M GmbH colours have stood for exhilarating performance and exclusive design also on the road. The BMW M4 Edition///M Heritage takes up this unmistakable colour combination on unique exterior and interior design features. There is a choice of the three body colours Laguna Seca Blue, Velvet Blue metallic and Imola Red available for the edition model. The lettering “///M Heritage” – in turquoise, orange or red respectively – is also to be found on the front headrests. 

The BMW M4 Edition ///M Heritage offers a particularly exclusive opportunity to experience the handling characteristics of a high-performance sports car marked by dynamics, agility and precision. At the same time, with this model, the BMW M GmbH is continuing the tradition of exclusive special editions, a tradition that has been cultivated now for several model generations. They reflect the enthusiasm for exceptional sporting successes or awareness of the history of selected models, of which many have become much sought-after collectors’ items in the course of time. 

Expressive paint finishes and a characteristic interior design were already hallmarks of the BMW M3 Edition of the year 2009. At that time, with the variants Alpine White, Black, Dakar Yellow and Monte Carlo Blue there were as many as four body colours available for the edition model based on the fourth generation of the BMW M3.

In the year 2012, BMW Motorsport’s successful comeback in the DTM triggered the production of the BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition. During the first season following an almost 20-year break, BMW came first in the manufacturer’s rating, with the BMW Team Schnitzer winning the team classification. Moreover, the Canadian Bruno Spengler seized the driver’s title. Only 54 units of the edition model were produced – one for each racing victory BMW was able to clinch in the DTM by then. And there were several more in the years that followed. In the 2016 season, it was the German BMW Motorsport works driver Marco Wittmann in particular who was hard to beat and who eventually became the new DTM champion. The BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition, which was limited to 200 units, was brought to market in his honour. The strongly racing-oriented special edition not only exhibited exclusive design features but, above all, was provided with numerous innovations that had previously helped the 368 kW/500 hp BMW M4 GTS achieve its outstanding performance.

The same year, BMW M GmbH also presented an edition model of the BMW M3 Sedan in memory of the BMW M3, which had made its debut three decades previously. The special edition 30 Years M3 was finished exclusively in the colour Macao Blue metallic and produced in a limited quantity of 500 units. The latest example to date of a fascinating combination of performance and exclusiveness is the BMW M4 Convertible Edition 30 Years. This open-top high performance sports car was produced in a limited edition of 300 and presented in 2018 – three decades after the premiere of the first-generation BMW M3 Convertible. This edition model also featured exclusive paint finishes – namely Macao Blue metallic and Mandarin II uni – and a specific interior design, providing for unique and aesthetic driving pleasure both on country roads and on the racetrack.

Spielberg. BMW M GmbH presents the new spearhead to the MotoGP Safety Car fleet: the BMW M8 MotoGP Safety Car. The 625 hp lead car is based on the BMW M8 Competition (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 242 – 238 g/km*), which made its world debut at the BMW Group #NextGen at BMW Welt in Munich at the end of June. The new BMW M8 MotoGP Safety Car will make its first appearance this weekend, at the MotoGP Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

Innovative high-performance automobiles for the safety of the top tier of motorcycles is the principle that has guided BMW M GmbH for more than 20 years as partner of MotoGP organiser Dorna Sports and ‘Official Car of MotoGP’. The Munich-based company has provided the official MotoGP Safety Car fleet since 1999 and the BMW M8 MotoGP Safety Car is the latest highlight in a long line of high-powered lead cars.

“The BMW M8 and the BMW M8 GTE were developed in parallel, and these racing genes distinguish the BMW M8 models in all areas,” said Markus Flasch, President of BMW M GmbH. “That’s why it was a logical step for us to choose the BMW M8 Competition as a basis for our new MotoGP safety car. Even in its production version, this high-performance automobile is suited to the racetrack. With its innovative technical features, it is yet another example of our quest to keep pushing the limit upwards. The M power under the bonnet comes from the most powerful engine ever developed for a BMW M GmbH car. The high-revving V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology develops 460 kW/625 hp. The high-performance power unit teams up with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, and the engine’s power is channelled to the road via the M xDrive all-wheeldrive system. One of the features that stands out in particular is a newly developed integrated braking system, an M-specific version of which presents the driver with two different brake pedal feel settings.

The precise interaction between powertrain, chassis technology and aerodynamics has been carefully honed over the course of intensive testing at the BMW Group’s test track near Miramas in southern France, the winter testing centre in Arjeplog, Sweden and the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, along with other race circuits. Experience collected from the development of the BMW M8 GTE racing car also played a role in the configuration process. The performance-focused character of the engine, transmission and chassis allows the new BMW M8 Competition to power from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds.

Painstaking manual work at the BMW M Manufaktur in Garching converted the high-performance base car into the BMW M8 MotoGP Safety Car, preparing it to appear as the course car in the world’s fastest motorcycle racing series. This process included the addition of numerous BMW M Performance Parts, many of which are available as retrofit parts for the BMW M8 production model. These emphasise the sporty appearance of the Safety Car and meet all the functional requirements for aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. The transformation of the BMW M8 Competition to a MotoGP Safety Car was completed by the inclusion of special racing features and the necessary safety equipment.

The model-specific chassis technology has been designed and tuned with the specific demands of track use in mind. Fast responses, a thirst for revs, and sustained power delivery: V8 engine with signature M performance traits.

The high-revving V8 engine presents a compelling blend of razor-sharp responses, a feverish appetite for revs and sustained power delivery across an extraordinarily wide rev band. The M TwinPower Turbo technology of the 4.4-litre unit includes a pair of turbochargers – positioned in the “V” between the cylinder banks and boasting optimised efficiency – and indirect charge air cooling, plus a direct fuel injection system working with maximum pressure of 350 bar. Another technological highlight is the cross-bank exhaust manifolds.

In the new BMW M8 Coupe and new BMW M8 Convertible, the engine serves up peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) between 1,800 and 5,600 rpm – and goes on to deliver maximum output of 441 kW/600 hp at 6,000 rpm, en route to the 7,200 rpm cut-off. The power unit in the Competition models sustains its peak torque up to 5,800 rpm and develops maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp at 6,000 rpm, its race-derived, high-revving instincts taking an even more prominent lead. The most powerful variant of the V8 teams up with a special engine mounting for a more rigid connection with the vehicle structure. This results in even crisper engine response and also has a positive effect on the immediacy of turn-in and the transmission of engine noise into the cabin.

A sophisticated cooling system ensures optimum operating temperatures at all times, both in everyday use on urban routes and when the cars are stretching their legs on the track. The central cooling module, for example, is flanked by two high-temperature water circuits. And the system also features an additional engine oil cooler and separate transmission oil cooler. The particular challenges of track driving are reflected in the design of the oil supply system. The oil sump has a smaller front chamber, which steps in when extra capacity is needed. An additional suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to draw lubricant from the smaller chamber. This ensures a reliable supply of oil at all times, even under extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and M xDrive.

Power transfer is via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. The Drivelogic button on the newly designed selector lever allows the driver to select from three modes with specific shift characteristics for particularly efficient, sporty or ultra-dynamic driving. There are also M gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

Another factor in the enthralling performance of the new BMW M8 models is the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with its rear-biased setup. The centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential ensures loss-free transfer of the engine’s huge power to the road. And via the Setup menu, the driver can choose between the default 4WD setting and 4WD Sport mode, which diverts a larger slice of engine power to the rear wheels. Deactivating DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) brings 2WD mode into the equation. The transfer of power exclusively to the rear wheels and absence of stabilising inputs from the control systems add up to a driving experience of singular purity for the experienced wheelman.

M-specific chassis with extremely rigid mounting.

The new BMW M8 models provide a fresh take on the characteristic M feeling that translates into unbeatable directional stability even in extremely dynamic situations, a linear build-up of transverse loads however strong the lateral acceleration, and neutral steering behaviour even at the limit. The chassis technology comprises model-specific components and a setup fine-tuned in intensive testing on race tracks. At the same time, the chassis also lives up to the expectations of luxury car customers when it comes to everyday and long-distance comfort.

The rear axle also incorporates purpose-designed components to meet the exceptional handling dynamics required of high-performance sports cars. The M-specific forged links are one of the factors in the fleet-footed agility of the M8, while the precise responses of the suspension and damping elements are partly down to the anti-roll bars’ improved rigidity. Handling properties are given a further boost by the front end’s high torsional strength, which has been achieved with a tower-to-bulkhead strut and a newly developed, exceptionally rigid shear panel with integrated side sill connection. A steel X-brace and an aluminium transverse strut are fitted for an even more stable connection between the rear axle and the body.

The new BMW M8 models are also equipped as standard with M-specific Adaptive suspension including electronically controlled dampers and electromechanical M Servotronic steering. The DSC system hooks up with the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential and also offers M Dynamic mode. This mode allows a greater degree of wheel slip and combines with the M xDrive system’s rear-biased setup to deliver an exceptionally sporty drive complete with controlled drifts through corners. Standard specification also includes 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in twin‑spoke design and high-performance tyres (front: 275/35 R 20, rear: 285/35 R 20).

Integrated braking system with configurable pedal feel.

As an alternative to the M compound brakes specified as standard, the new BMW M8 can also be ordered with optional M carbon-ceramic brakes. Both variants are fitted in conjunction with an M-specific version of an integrated braking system. Thanks to this cutting-edge technology, the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions are brought together within a compact module. The brake pressure required is triggered by an electric actuator, which means it can be generated more dynamically, pedal feel is optimised and the interventions from the stability control system are significantly faster and more precise.

The version of the new braking system developed for BMW M models also presents the driver with two pedal settings. The driver can choose between a more comfort-oriented and a particularly direct, instantaneous pedal feel.

Distinctive design as an expression of dynamism and exclusivity.

The exclusive aura of the new BMW M8 models is further enhanced by model-specific features geared to the functional requirements of high-performance sports cars. Large air intakes and the BMW kidney grille with familiar M double bars at the front end, lavishly flared front wheel arches, M gills in the front side panels, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, a rear spoiler and a rear apron with diffuser elements in a contrasting colour create a fitting visual showcase for the dynamic potential and exclusive status of the new M contenders. An M Carbon exterior package is offered as an option.

Character-defining features of the new BMW M8 Coupe include the double-bubble contour of its carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof, reminiscent of classic racing cars. Passengers in the new BMW M8 Convertible are protected from the elements by a high-quality fabric roof pulled taut over the cabin. The multi-layer soft-top opens and closes in 15 seconds at the touch of a button, even while on the move.

Interior: signature M cockpit and luxurious ambience.

The interior of the new high-performance sports cars brings together an M‑specific cockpit design and progressive luxury. Standard specification for the BMW M8 Coupe, BMW M8 Convertible and Competition models includes model-specific leather upholstery options, the BMW Display Key, the BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific content, the Driving Assistant, the Parking Assistant and the BMW Live Cockpit Professional (with navigation system and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant). Additional driver assistance systems are available as options to provide a further boost to comfort and safety.

The new Setup button on the centre console enables direct access to the settings for the engine, dampers, steering, M xDrive and braking system so they can be tailored to personal preferences and the situation at hand. Two individually composed variants of this M setup can be stored permanently with the driver’s preferred settings for the engine sound, gearshift characteristics of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, driving stability control and Auto Start Stop function. The overall vehicle configuration can then be called up at any time by pressing one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

Another new feature is the M Mode button on the centre console, which the driver can use to adjust the driver assistance systems and the displays in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display. M Mode allows the driver to activate ROAD and SPORT settings, while the Competition models also come with a TRACK setting designed exclusively for use on race circuits. Changing the mode alters the information presented to the driver on the screens, while the safety-enhancing interventions by the driver assistance systems – such as active braking or steering inputs – are reduced to a bare minimum or deactivated altogether.

Munich. The recently presented high-performance models BMW X3 M and X4 M set a new benchmark in the mid-range segment of Sports Activity Vehicles and Sports Activity Coupés in terms of sporty flair, agility and precision. It is now also possible to add a heightened touch of individual flair and selective enhancement to the characteristic M design of the exterior and interior of these models with exclusive M Performance Parts. The sporty accessories are likewise available for the two more powerful variants BMW X3 M Competition and BMW X4 M Competition.

Exterior and aerodynamic parts made of high-quality carbon fibre.

An attractive range of M Performance Parts is available for the models so as to lend even greater visual emphasis to their sporting potential. The components made of high-quality carbon fibre are perfectly harmonised, their design and shaping having been especially developed for the SAVs and SACs. They are crafted elaborately by hand before being sealed with a clear finish and given a high-gloss polish. In addition to enhancing the M specific appearance of the models, the body elements also meet functional requirements in terms of lightweight construction and aerodynamics. The components available are the carbon fibre radiator grille, carbon fibre air breathers and premium door sill finishers with carbon fibre inserts and coloured M Performance overprint. The BMW X3 M can also be enhanced with a roof edge spoiler in high-gloss black. The exclusive rear fins for the BM X4 M are also finished in high-gloss black. Finally, the M Performance motor racing lettering for front, rear and side is recommended as a perfect supplement to the exterior parts. Providing a striking accentuation in the characteristic M colours complete with M Performance inscription, it establishes a clear link with motor racing while at the same time conveying a sense of exclusivity and individuality.

LED door projectors with M Performance motifs.

Thanks to the BMW LED door projectors, even entering the car is a distinctive experience. With the M Performance slide set it is possible to have the BMW M logo or other sports-style graphics projected onto the ground next to the vehicle. The lighting not only ensures comfort and safety when entering and exiting the vehicle, it also creates an exclusive, distinctive atmosphere. The motifs are clearly perceptible, even at dusk.

Sporty accentuations and carbon fibre look in the interior. 

For the interior of the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M, too, there is an attractive selection of M Performance components available to enhance the cockpit both visually and functionally. The M Performance Pro steering wheel consists of the steering wheel, carbon fibre Alcantara steering wheel trim and carbon fibre shift paddles. The steering wheel has a particularly impressive Alcantara grip area with large thumbrests and is especially comfortable to hold. The remaining sections of the steering wheel rim are covered in high-quality leather, thereby creating an interesting blend of materials. The additional central marking in motor racing blue and three-colour M seam make for a superb racetrack feeling. The steering wheel trim is refined with premium carbon fibre fabric, Alcantara and a high-gloss finish and has the M Performance inscription integrated in the 6 o’clock detail. The M Performance shift paddles, likewise refined with carbon fibre fabric and a high-gloss finish, have red shift symbols integrated.

The M Performance steering wheel trim in the carbon fibre high-gloss variant with leather is available to enhance the standard M sports steering wheel; this also bears the M Performance inscription in the 6 o’clock detail. The M Performance carbon fibre shift paddles are also available individually for the standard M sports steering wheel. Finally, an attractive addition for vehicles with sporty M Performance fittings is provided by the M Performance carbon fibre trim elements for the gear selector knob. The fine carbon fibre fabric is enhanced with a clear finish and a high-gloss polish. In the footwell, the car's sporty appearance can be optionally highlighted by means of high-quality velvet velour floor mats with embroidered M Performance inscription, a leather-look surround complete with contrasting seam and a pennant in the typical M colours. 

M Performance key case and M Performance wheel bags.

The M Performance key case in Alcantara with carbon fibre is an accessory for the driver that is both stylish and functional. Protected by the case from scratches and damage, the vehicle key is attached to a high-quality internal hex screw in blue. The M Performance wheel bags are recommended as a practical solution for storing and transporting the high-quality light-alloy wheels. They protect the driver and vehicle from soiling and are convenient for loading due to their reinforced handles. Markings ensure quick allocation, while the attractive M Performance design creates a racing atmosphere even in the garage at home.

Munich. The feeling of an M car is unmistakable – and now it can be tailored even more closely to the individual. BMW M GmbH is unveiling a new display and control system for the configuration of the powertrain, chassis and driver assistance systems on its high-performance sports cars. As well as additional scope for adapting the vehicle settings both to the situation at hand and to personal preferences using the Setup button, drivers will also enjoy the services of the new M Mode (activated at the touch of a button). The Setup button can be used to adjust the vehicle settings, while M Mode allows the displays and driver assistance systems to be tuned to the driver’s requirements. This extra individualisation and even more intuitive operation will be included for the first time in the new BMW M8 Coupe and BMW M8 Competition Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km [26.7 – 26.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 242 – 238 g/km; provisional figures), and the new BMW M8 Convertible and BMW M8 Competition Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.8 – 10.6 l/100 km [26.2 – 26.7 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 246 – 241 g/km; provisional figures). With the help of these new features, drivers of BMW’s high-performance models for the luxury segment can enjoy their exceptional range of abilities – from supreme long-distance comfort to alluring track dynamics – in even greater depth.

The control system developed for BMW M models traditionally enables their powertrain and chassis technology to be configured in a wide variety of ways according to personal tastes and needs. Indeed, the driver can activate various settings for the engine, suspension and steering independently of one another. In models specified with the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the distribution of power between the front and rear wheels can also be tweaked. And now the new BMW M8 Coupe and new BMW M8 Convertible offer the ability to configure the braking system as required, too.

New Setup button enables intuitive operation with direct access to all powertrain and chassis systems.

The new Setup button on the centre console of the new BMW M8 Coupe and new BMW M8 Convertible enables direct access to all available setup options for five vehicle parameters. Pressing the button brings up a Setup menu in the Control Display, which offers an overview of the vehicle settings currently engaged. The driver can then activate their desired mode for the engine, suspension, steering, brakes and M xDrive – in a single step in each case – via the touchscreen or the iDrive Controller.

The engine characteristics can be adjusted by means of the EFFICIENT, SPORT and SPORT PLUS settings, while the COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT PLUS chassis options give access to the three profiles for the electronically controlled dampers. The driver can also choose between COMFORT and SPORT for both the M-specific electromechanical steering and the new braking system. When DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) is deactivated, the 4WD, 4WD SPORT and 2WD (for pure rear-wheel drive) settings for the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system also come into play. Two individually composed variants of this setup can be stored permanently with the driver’s preferred settings for the engine sound, gearshift characteristics, driving stability control and Auto Start Stop function. The overall vehicle configuration can then be called up instantly at any time by pressing one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

Premiere in the BMW M8: integrated braking system with precise pedal feel and M-specific configurability.

The M-specific version of a new braking technology paves the way for the configuration of braking characteristics, a feature available for the first time in the new BMW M8. The new system brings together the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a compact module. The integrated braking system reduces weight by around two kilograms and employs a vacuum-free brake booster to enhance the car’s overall efficiency. The brake pressure required is triggered by an electric actuator, which allows it to be generated more dynamically and also ensures significantly faster and more precise interventions from the driving stability control system.

The integrated braking system also does an excellent job of allowing vehicle deceleration to be geared precisely to the driver’s requirements and of generating sublime pedal feel in any situation. Braking feedback to the driver is unimpaired by wet road surfaces, significant lateral acceleration or high brake temperatures, and this ensures precise metering of braking power at all times. The version of the new braking system developed for BMW M models also presents the driver with two pedal feel settings.

COMFORT and SPORT modes alter the amount of pressure on the brake pedal required to slow the car. This allows the driver to choose between a comfort-oriented perception of the braking process and a particularly direct, instantaneous response to applications of the pedal. The new BMW M8 teams this innovative system with both the standard M compound brakes and optional M carbon-ceramic brakes.

Pure driving pleasure through innovation: the M Mode button.

In addition to the new configuration options opened up by the Setup button, the new BMW M8 also allows the gearshift characteristics of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission to be adjusted using the Drivelogic button on the selector lever and the engine sound to be varied via a separate button on the centre console. M Dynamic Mode – which raises the intervention thresholds for the driving stability control and allows controlled drifts – and DSC Off mode can also be initiated at the touch of a button.

A fresh addition to the new flagship models from BMW M GmbH is the M Mode button on the centre console. This can be used to alter the responses of the driver assistance systems and the screens in the all-digital instrument cluster and Head-Up Display. M Mode allows the driver to activate ROAD and SPORT modes, while the new BMW M8 Competition Coupe and BMW M8 Competition Convertible also come with a TRACK setting. These options enhance the hallmark M driving experience according to the situation at hand. Changing the settings alters the information presented to the driver on the screens, while the safety-enhancing interventions by the driver assistance systems – such as active braking or steering inputs – are reduced to a bare minimum or deactivated altogether.

In the default ROAD setting, all the standard and optional driver assistance systems are fully activated. A simple press of the M Mode button engages the SPORT setting, in which the active driver assistance systems (in the configuration set by the driver) now only transmit alerts on speed limits and overtaking restrictions. This mode disables all interventions in the braking and steering systems, aside from those made by the Collision Warning with braking function and the Evasion Assistant.

In SPORT mode, the driver benefits from M View in both the instrument cluster and the Head-Up Display. Here, only relevant information for sporty driving – i.e. an M-specific engine speed dial and the shift lights (which indicate the ideal time to change gear), a digital speed display and the gear currently engaged – is displayed in the cockpit. Information on coolant temperature, charge pressure, tyre condition, and longitudinal and lateral acceleration can be viewed in the right- and left-hand areas of the instrument cluster. The Head-Up Display read-out is concentrated around the engine revs and shift lights, navigation instructions and distance warnings, the gear selected and the vehicle speed, plus the speed limits and overtaking restrictions detected by the Speed Limit Info system. Pressing the M Mode button again returns the driver to the default ROAD mode.

An extended press of the M Mode button engages TRACK mode, which is available in the Competition models and designed exclusively for use on race circuits. The decision to activate this mode must be confirmed using the iDrive Controller. In this setting, all the comfort and safety functions of the driver assistance systems are deactivated. In addition, the audio system and Control Display are both switched off in order to focus the driver’s attention even more intently on the road ahead. TRACK mode allows drivers of the new BMW M8 Competition Coupe and new BMW M8 Competition Convertible to experience an ultra-pure, racing-car-inspired distillation of M feeling. Added to which, the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display also include M View, although TRACK mode blanks out the road sign detection and distance information. Pressing the M Mode button again takes the car out of the TRACK setting and back into ROAD mode.

The new BMW M5 Competition high-performance sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.8 - 10.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 246 – 243 g/km)* brings together exceptional performance and a suitably rarefied aura with the unruffled ease in everyday use for which BMW M models are renowned. A 19 kW/25 hp hike in engine output over the standard version of the new BMW M5 (to 460 kW/625 hp), even more direct responses and bespoke chassis tuning ensure a race-inspired driving experience at all times.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 Competition heralds the creation of a new product category. In future, BMW M GmbH will offer the most powerful variants of its high-performance cars as standalone models.

The engine: more power and a distinctive brand of performance.

The performance-driving experience that defines the character of the new BMW M5 Competition has a deep emotional richness – and is rooted in the distinctive way its engine goes about its business. The 4.4-litre V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology now produces maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque is 750 Newton metres (553 lb-ft) and can be enjoyed across an extremely wide rev range – from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm (i.e. a 200-rpm wider band than in the standard version of the new BMW M5).

The high-revving instincts of the eight-cylinder engine are therefore harnessed to give the new BMW M5 Competition imposing levels of thrust. The car’s unique power delivery makes its presence felt in reducing the Competition’s 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time to 3.3 seconds. Furthermore,
0 – 200 km/h (124 mph) is over in 10.8 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than in the standard version of the new M5.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes a model-specific M Sport exhaust system with tailpipe embellishers in black chrome. This version of the twin-pipe, flap-controlled exhaust generates a strikingly prominent soundtrack. Meanwhile, the addition of a particulate filter to the Competition’s armoury enables a further reduction in emissions.

Specially designed engine mounts optimise responsiveness and cornering characteristics.

The new BMW M5 Competition features model-specific engine mounting, which also has a noticeable impact on its performance abilities. The engine mounts have modified characteristics and an increased spring rate, and the drive unit’s firmer connection to the vehicle’s structure results in even more direct engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The car also turns into corners with noticeably greater directness and precision on account of the mounting’s stiffer characteristics.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive.

The task of relaying the new BMW M5 Competition’s engine power is again handled by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Three different modes offering a choice of efficient, sporty or ultra-dynamic driving can be activated using the Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector.

Having made its debut in the standard version of the new BMW M5, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system now also feeds the further increased power of the BMW M5 Competition onto the road with poise, assurance and thrilling alacrity. It generates just enough extra traction to achieve acceleration times worthy of a super-sports car. The centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential is largely responsible for channelling the engine’s remarkable output to the car’s wheels without any loss of power en route. The rear-biased setup of the M xDrive system is another contributory factor in the tremendous agility of the high-performance sedan. Plus, a rear-wheel-drive-only setting (2WD) allows experienced and skilled drivers to revel in the experience offered by past generations of the BMW M5 – i.e. handling in its purest form, with no control systems holding the car back.

Individually tuned chassis for the ultimate in precision and performance.

Like every BMW M car, the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with chassis technology matched perfectly to the performance characteristics of its engine. The associated modifications ensure precisely controllable handling at all times, even in extremely dynamic driving situations. As well as lowering the vehicle by seven millimetres, the model-specific chassis tuning also includes judicious tweaks to the wheel suspension, springs and dampers.

The increased camber at the front axle enhances the car’s ability to absorb lateral forces through high-speed corners. Fitting the toe links with ball joints instead of rubber mounts has resulted in even more precise wheel guidance at the rear axle. And the rear anti-roll bar also has a firmer spring rate. The front axle of the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with a newly designed mounting for the anti-roll bar. Making the springs at the front and rear axles ten per cent stiffer than on the standard version of the new BMW M5 has produced a firmer ride, which also has a positive impact on steering response. Plus, shorter auxiliary springs reduce fluctuation in wheel loads, as does the unique tuning of the damper hydraulics. Consequently, the direct connection with the chassis can also be clearly felt in Comfort mode. Selecting Sport mode activates the damper settings perfected for testing on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, while Sport Plus lends itself to ultra-dynamic driving on grand prix tracks.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes exclusive M light-alloy wheels sporting a Y-spoke design in a bi-colour finish. The 20-inch forged wheels are shod with mixed-size tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear.

Exclusive and highly expressive design features.

The exclusive feel of the new BMW M5 Competition is further enhanced by a selection of other model-specific design features. BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim is complemented by the use of discreetly sporty high-gloss black for the kidney grille surround, the decorative mesh of the signature BMW M gills in the front side panels, the trim for the rear bumper covering and the exterior mirror caps. Another special feature are the door openers, which are painted fully in the body colour. The rear spoiler and “M5” boot lid badge – which gains “Competition” lettering – also come in high-gloss black.

Inside the car, an understated stripe design in BMW M GmbH colours for the seat belts, plus floor mats with special piping and “M5” logo, point to the exclusive character of the new BMW M5 Competition. A further identifying feature is the “M Competition” graphic that appears in the instrument cluster to greet the driver when it is starting up.

Munich. The BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 241 g/100km*) has been voted "World Performance Car 2018", making this the seventh time BMW has received a World Car Award from the organisation "World Car of the Year". The award ceremony was held on 28 March 2018 at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

There were a total of eleven vehicles in this category – performance-oriented cars of which at least 2,000 units are produced per year and which are available for purchase on at least two continents from 1 January 2017 until 31 May 2018. Selection and voting in all categories was carried out by an international jury made up of 82 leading automobile journalists from 24 countries.

The BMW M5 is fitted with the latest version of the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M Twin Power Turbo Technology. An output of 600 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm guarantee supreme propulsion and phenomenal driving performance: the V8 biturbo engine accelerates the M5 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The new M5 features the M specific all-wheel drive system M xDrive. Power transmission is taken care of by the new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic: in conjunction with M xDrive, this ensures the power of the high-revving turbocharged engine is transferred to the road in perfect fashion.

The new BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km [26.9 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km*) takes BMW M GmbH into new territory, with M xDrive all-wheel drive featuring in the high-performance sedan for the first time. This change of tack sees the M5 exploring new dynamic dimensions and offering greater everyday practicality in all driving conditions. The new car is committed to building on the tradition of a concept – the luxurious four-door business sedan with a taste for the race track – first glimpsed in 1984 with the original BMW M5.

The new M xDrive developed by BMW M GmbH is the most emotionally engaging all-wheel-drive system yet to grace the high-performance segment. It works with a central transfer case with multi-plate clutch and distributes drive fully variably between the front and rear axle, as required. Another ingredient in the car’s supreme traction in all road and weather conditions is the Active M Differential at the rear axle, which also works fully variably and has a locking effect between 0 and 100 per cent.

The character of M xDrive can be adjusted as desired. The driver has five different configurations to choose from based on combinations of the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive modes (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD). In the basic setting with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) activated and 4WD, the system permits slight slip through the rear wheels when accelerating out of corners – and therefore plays its part in giving the new BMW M5 its sporting agility. In M Dynamic mode (MDM, 4WD Sport) M xDrive allows easily controlled drifts. The three M xDrive modes with DSC switched off have been conceived to sate the appetites of keen drivers and primarily for use on the track. Here, the driver can choose from three configurations up to and including pure rear-wheel drive (2WD). This mode allows the driver to pick their own drift angle and treats connoisseurs to driving dynamics in their purest form.

Providing ample power for the new BMW M5 is a 4.4-litre V8 bi-turbo engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The M engineers have carried out significant revisions to the outgoing model’s power unit. For example, newly developed turbochargers, ultra-efficient indirect charge air cooling and increased fuel injection pressure together help to raise output and, above all, torque. The engine develops 441 kW/600 hp at 5,600 – 6,700 rpm, while a monumental 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque is placed at the driver’s disposal from as low down as 1,800 rpm and remains there until 5,600 rpm. A map-controlled, fully variable oil pump ensures oil is supplied as and when the new BMW M5 needs it, even on the track. The car’s impressive performance figures speak for themselves: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds (124 mph). Top speed, meanwhile, is an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph), but the optional M Driver’s Package can keep the fun coming to 305 km/h (189 mph).

The new BMW M5 channels all that power through a specially tuned eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. In D mode it provides all the comfort and convenience of fully automatic gear changes, but can then also switch to sequential manual shifts. The driver can do this using either the compact selector lever on the centre console or the steering wheel-mounted paddles. Drivelogic allows the driver to adjust the transmission’s characteristics to their personal preferences. For track use, the eight-speed M Steptronic unit serves up lightning-fast shift times, helping to give the new BMW M5 its exceptional agility and dynamic flair.

The suspension of the new BMW M5 is likewise designed to deliver both maximum traction for everyday use and supreme dynamic performance on the track. Like the engine, transmission and M xDrive system, it has been tuned by experts and racing drivers at venues including the world’s most exacting test facility – the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. Sophisticated stiffening elements in the front and rear structures ensure the body structure is extremely rigid and therefore that the car provides instantaneous feedback, in particular when the driver is pushing hard on the road or track.

The driver can also choose from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes for the Variable Damper Control (VDC) system – which has M-specific tuning – and the M Servotronic steering. And the engine’s characteristics can also be configured to the driver’s tastes via the Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus modes. The two M1 and M2 buttons on the M leather steering wheel can be used to store two set-ups combining the driver’s preference of engine, transmission, suspension and M xDrive modes, the DSC mode and Head-Up-Display settings. The driver can then activate their preferred set-up by pressing the relevant button.

The new BMW M5 includes revisions to its bodywork over the regular BMW 5 Series to satisfy its challenging dynamic brief. The M engineers have redesigned the broader front side panels and front bumper trim to include larger apertures for the air feeding the cooling systems and brakes. Also new is the rear diffuser. The exhaust system’s quartet of tailpipes are a visual pointer to the power generated by the BMW M5 and also lay on a suitably sporting soundtrack for the job in hand, courtesy of their flap control system. The driver can use a button to adjust the engine sound as desired.

The bonnet, which also has an M-specific design, is made from aluminium and boasts eye-catching sculpture lines. These extend into the extremely lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof – a standard feature of the new M5. The weight savings contributed by the CFRP roof and other components such as the exhaust system help to ensure the new BMW M5 with M xDrive all-wheel drive is lighter than its predecessor.

The new BMW M5 is fitted as standard with M compound brakes, which are lighter than conventional grey cast iron items and therefore also bring down the car’s weight. With blue-painted six-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear, plus perforated, inner-vented brake discs all round, the M compound brakes have the speed-shedding power to befit the car’s dynamic potency. The optional M carbon ceramic brakes, which can be identified by callipers painted in a gold colour and shave another 23 kilograms off the M5’s weight, can withstand even greater punishment.

The new BMW M5 comes as standard with polished 19-inch light-alloy wheels (front: 9.5 x 19, rear: 10.5 x 19) in Orbit Grey and M-specific tyres (front: 275/40 R 19, rear: 285/40 R 19). 20-inch items can be specified as an option (front: 275/35 R 20 tyres on 9.5 x 20 rims, rear: 285/35 R 20 tyres on 10.5 x 20 rims). Standard specification for the new BMW M5 also features Merino leather and M seats with electric adjustment. The options list includes newly developed M multifunction seats, which stand out with their bucket-seat-style construction and even better lateral support.

The new BMW M5 can be ordered from September 2017, priced at €117,900, and deliveries will begin in spring 2018. Scheduled for launch on the same sales start date as the standard M5 is the BMW M5 First Edition. This special-edition version – limited to a run of 400 examples worldwide – has BMW Individual Frozen Dark Red Metallic paintwork, is exclusively appointed and costs an extra €19,500 over the standard model.
