As the second model in the Neue Klasse, it represents a technological quantum leap into a new era. The first all-electric BMW 3 Series launches as the BMW i3 50 xDrive, which has an electric motor on both the front and rear axles. The combined system power output is 345 kW/469 hp¹, the maximum torque is 645 Nm.¹ The highly efficient sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, together with the new BMW Panoramic iDrive and Heart of Joy, delivers driving pleasure on a level never experienced before. With BMW Symbiotic Drive, the assisted driving experience is also entering a new era. The BMW i3 also stands for a modern interpretation of the hallmark design features of a BMW Sedan.

As a representative of the new design language, the new BMW i3 is immediately recognisable as a BMW 3 Series – assured, dynamic and intelligent. The hallmark BMW sporty silhouette proportions are reflected in the new 2.5-box design. Notable features are the long wheelbase, the greenhouse that slopes towards the rear and the short overhangs. The four-eyed face is familiar, yet still new. The BMW radiator grille and twin headlights merge into an innovative light signature, creating a powerful and expressive unit. The rear end, featuring prominently horizontal rear lights, further highlights precision and technological progress. The prominently flared wheel arches emphasise the sporty, wide stance of the new BMW i3. The interior offers a high level of spaciousness and makes full use of all the possibilities of the vehicle concept, which is consistently geared towards electromobility. At the same time, the interior represents driver-oriented sportiness. The new BMW Panoramic iDrive not only defines the modern and inviting interior, but also ushers in a new level of hallmark BMW driver orientation.

Sportiness and driving pleasure are invariably embedded in the DNA of the BMW 3 Series. The new BMW i3 sets new standards. Maximising the unmatched capabilities of electromobility, it offers impressively precise, effortless, and assured handling. The Heart of Joy high-performance computer shapes the BMW i3 driving experience. Its responses are ten times faster than in previous systems. Together with three other superbrain high-performance computers, the Heart of Joy forms the centrepiece of the new software and electronics architecture.

The new BMW i3 stands out for its excellent suitability for long journeys. Its range is up to 900 kilometres¹ (in accordance with the WLTP test cycle). DC charging capacities of up to 400 kW also drastically reduce charging times. The DC fast charger can recharge energy for up to 400 km¹ in 10 minutes (in accordance with ISO 12906 in the WLTP cycle). Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology provides the prerequisites for this rapid progress. It comprises highly efficient electric motors, 800-volt technology and new high-voltage batteries with new round cells. The cell-to-pack design used enables high energy densities at pack level and a flatter high-voltage battery. The BMW i3 also features the bidirectional charging functions Vehicle-to-Load (optional AC charging Professional required), Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid charging functions.

The BMW i3 is manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Munich, which is the home plant of the BMW Group. For more than a hundred years, the plant in Milbertshofen, in the north of Munich, has been producing premium vehicles. Over the last four years, the plant has seen significant modernisation: Alongside a new body shop, a cutting-edge vehicle assembly area incorporating logistics space has been constructed. The new buildings are in their final stages of expansion. Production of the new BMW i3 will start in these halls from August 2026. The first vehicles will be delivered from autumn this year. One year later, the production portfolio will be switched to exclusively fully electric vehicles of the Neue Klasse. The plant conversion includes a large number of modernisation measures.

Munich / Beijing. At Auto China 2024 in Beijing, the BMW Group presents the latest progress in its change towards electrification, digitalisation and circularity. World premieres of new BMW and MINI models take centre stage. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which heralds the next generation of BMW vehicles, is on show for the first time in China.

„With the NEUE KLASSE, we are carrying BMW into the future: in design, technology and philosophy. It begins already next year when we will release the NEUE KLASSE onto the market. Not with niche models – but starting in our most successful, highest-volume segments,“ says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

The BMW Vision Neue Klasse signals the start of a new era of individual mobility and provides a glimpse of the BMW brand's future model generation. It is rich in digital experiences, locally emission-free and circular in the long term to ensure typical BMW driving pleasure for future generations. Production of the Neue Klasse series models will start in 2025, initially at the BMW Group plant in Debrecen and shortly afterwards in China.

The brand's most popular electric vehicle worldwide is currently the BMW i4, the new version of which will celebrate its world premiere at Auto China 2024. The success of the BMW i4 confirms the BMW Group's open technology approach, which makes it possible to produce vehicles with purely electric drive systems and highly efficient combustion engines on a common platform. In Beijing, the new BMW i4 will be shown to the public for the first time together with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé's combustion engine variants, which have also been further developed.

The world premiere of the MINI Aceman at Auto China 2024 marks the third member of the brand's new model family. The all-electric crossover model closes the gap between the new MINI Cooper and the new MINI Countryman.

"What the NEUE KLASSE is to BMW, the New MINI Family is to MINI: the most desirable product range in the history of the brand and the biggest investment we ever made in MINI. At just over four metres long, the Aceman embodies the basic idea of the original, iconic MINI of 1959: progressive design, optimal use of space and a minimal footprint.," said Jochen Goller, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Customer, Brand and Sales.

The Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, in short: Auto China, is one of the most important trade fairs in the international automotive industry. The 18th edition of the exhibition, which alternates with Auto Shanghai, will be held under the theme "New Era, New Cars" and will be open to the public from 25 April to 4 May 2024. At the China International Exhibition Centre in Beijing, car manufacturers, suppliers and service providers from all over the world will present their new models, products and technologies. The BMW Group brands will present their current product range on an exhibition area of around 2,000 square metres.

China premiere: The BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

The BMW Vision Neue Klasse combines the BMW Group's innovative strength and development expertise in the key future fields of electrification, digitalisation and circularity. A reinterpretation of the brand's typical design goes hand in hand with the progress embodied by the Vision vehicle. A clear design language reduced to the essentials with generous surfaces and few striking lines creates an almost monolithic body. Characteristic features such as the BMW radiator grille and the Hofmeister kink counter-swing on the C-pillar. are brought into even sharper focus.

In the interior, the next generation of BMW iDrive offers a unique digital user experience that merges the real and virtual worlds. It consistently puts the driver and his needs at the centre. In addition to the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel and the Central Display, the driver can interact with the vehicle using the innovative BMW Panoramic Vision. For the first time, it projects information across the entire width of the windscreen and is complemented in the Neue Klasse series by the enhanced BMW 3D Head-Up Display. Analogue controls are reduced to a minimum in the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

The increased use of secondary raw materials, resource-conserving production methods and all-electric drive with sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology will reduce the CO₂ footprint of the Neue Klasse over the entire life cycle of the vehicles. In order to increase recyclability and take a decisive step towards a circular economy, the variety of materials used has also been reduced. An improved dismantling concept also helps to optimise the recycling of Neue Klasse vehicles.

World premiere: The new BMW i4, the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé.

The appeal of pure electric premium mobility is also being consistently enhanced in the current model range of the BMW brand. The BMW i4 will be available in four model variants on the world's automotive markets as part of an extensive model revision. The Connected Home Charging Package for intelligent, solar- and load-optimised charging at home will be offered in the first pilot markets. The BMW i4 also offers the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function, which enables charging at fast charging stations without an app or card.

The latest advances in digitalisation are represented by the latest generation of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 8.5, which is available in both the new BMW i4 and the combustion engine models of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. With the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the enhanced BMW iDrive is consistently geared towards operation via touch functions and natural speech. The digital update in the new BMW i4 and the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is accompanied by a redesign of the instrument panel. New steering wheels, interior trims and seat upholstery add modern accents to the premium ambience of all model variants.

On the exterior, the sporty profile of the premium mid-range models, which are extremely successful with both all-electric and conventional drive systems, has been sharpened by the redesign of the BMW radiator grille and headlights. In conjunction with the optional adaptive LED headlights, all models also feature exclusive laser rear lights. The range of exterior colours for the BMW i4 and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé has been extended to include the new Cape York Green metallic and Fire Red metallic variants. New aerodynamic 19-inch and 20-inch wheels are also available.

World premiere: the new MINI Aceman.

With its all-electric drive, progressive crossover proportions and innovative digital features, the new MINI Aceman brings fresh impetus to the premium small car segment. It combines the brand's hallmark agility with creative use of space and high functionality, making it the ideal companion in the city. With four doors and a large tailgate, the MINI Aceman is just over four metres long and offers room for five passengers and plenty of storage space for everyday use and weekend excursions.

As a character in its own right, the MINI Aceman appeals to customers who value the expression of individuality and personality in an urban environment. Its reduced, purist exterior design with clearly defined contours and strong edges is an expression of the new MINI design language "Charismatic Simplicity".

The intelligent interior concept maximises space by cleverly arranging seats and stowage compartments to make the most of the available room. The expressive and colourful interior design is made possible by the use of high-quality materials and innovative technologies such as the 3D knitting process for the textile surfaces. The MINI Interaction Unit with circular OLED display, MINI Experience Modes and dynamic projections on the dashboard and door sills provide a holistic user experience of light, motion, interaction and sound.

• Sport seats in Sensatec perforated are standard. Black seat surfaces in new M Performtex are part of the M Sport package or come as standard in the M Performance models. Optional Vernasca leather upholstery with decorative quilting now also offered in the new bi-colour variant Black/Red. BMW Individual Merino leather trim in three colours can also be specified as an option.
• Instrument panel with reduced number of buttons and controls due to consistent digitalisation. The ventilation and climate control functions and optional seat and steering wheel heating can now be operated by touch via the control display, by voice command and – in the case of the ventilation – using the new adjustment controls for the air vents.
• New interior trim elements in Dark Graphite matt are standard. Optional M Sport package includes interior strips in Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite.
• Additions to standard specification for the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé also include ambient lighting – with additional contour lighting integrated around the new central seam vents – and the interior and exterior mirror package. • Four-door coupé vehicle concept offers a consistent balance of practicality, everyday usability and long-distance capability – with either an electric or a conventional drive system. Five seats and a large, high-opening boot lid; boot capacity of all variants of the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé can be expanded from 470 litres to a maximum 1,290 litres.
• Fully electric BMW i4 now available in four model variants. New BMW i4 xDrive40 with electric all-wheel drive, maximum system output of 295 kW/401 hp and a range of 444 – 548 kilometres (276 – 341 miles) in the WLTP cycle. Also in the line-up: the range-topping BMW i4 M50 xDrive, the BMW i4 eDrive40 and the BMW i4 eDrive35.
• Combined Charging Unit for the BMW i4 enables AC charging at a maximum rate of 11 kW and DC charging at up to 205 kW (BMW i4 eDrive35: 180 kW). All variants of the BMW i4 now suitable for Connected Home Charging in the initial group of pilot markets: solar-optimised and load-optimised charging are possible, likewise (as the scheme expands further) cost-optimised charging using a dynamic electricity tariff. Plug & Charge Multi Contract enables convenient charging mid-journey.
• New BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé available with a variety of engines. Range includes the 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé, plus two four-cylinder petrol engines, a six-cylinder in-line diesel unit and a four-cylinder diesel. The six-cylinder in-line engines and the four-cylinder diesel unit have 48V mild hybrid technology. Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission standard for all engine variants. Engine power is transferred to the road either via classical rear-wheel drive or the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, depending on the model.
• New BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé display the brand’s familiar sporty handling and well resolved driving characteristics at all times thanks to model-specific tuning for the chassis technology. Electromechanical steering with Servotronic function, an integrated braking system and near-actuator wheel slip limitation all come as standard. BMW New Zealand will introduce the all-new, third generation BMW X1 to the local market in Q4 this year – bringing a host of compelling new features to the premium compact crossover segment – before following up in Q1 next year with the fully electric variant, the first-ever iX1.   

The new X1 combines a new and more prominent exterior styling package, a redesigned interior that seamlessly integrates BMW Operation System 8 and high-definition BMW Curved Display, a greater level of spaciousness and an expanded array of driver assistance systems.

At launch in Q4 this year, BMW will offer the X1 sDrive18i which is powered by responsive BMW TwinPower Turbo engines with seven-speed Steptronic transmission and double clutch as standard.

Debut of the iX1, the new fully electric model, will bring advanced BMW electromobility to a new audience and a rapidly expanding segment. It will feature the latest BMW eDrive technology, delivering high levels of emissions free driving pleasure.

Addition of the iX1 xDrive30 in 2023 will expand BMW Group New Zealand’s electrified model portfolio to 12 models, which is among the most of any manufacturer represented in the country.

Sustainability measures have been implemented in the development of the new X1, with extensive use of green energy both in production and across the supply chain, as well as use of greater quantities of secondary raw and natural materials.

Design: modern surface treatment, increased visual presence and robust looks in unmistakable BMW X model style

The surface treatment, lines and exterior design details of the BMW X1 display its Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) identity more clearly than ever in its third model generation. Distinctive design features include powerful proportions, almost square wheel arch contours and signature BMW X model styling for both the front and rear.

The upright front end of the new BMW X1 gives it a much greater sense of presence, with slim LED headlights, a large, almost square BMW kidney grille, X-shaped lines radiating out to the sides and chrome strips in the lower air intake.

Adaptive LED headlights with matrix high beam, pulsating turn indicators and variable light distribution complement the new styling touches.

Expressively sculpted surfaces and a long roofline are the distinguishing features of the new model’s dynamically stretched silhouette. When viewed from the rear, the slim tailgate window, horizontal lines, striking LED lights and flared wheel arches produce a contemporary and commanding appearance.

The robust aura of the new BMW X1 can be intensified to great effect with the specific design elements of the xLine model, which include stylistic underride protection. The M Sport model, also offered as an alternative to the base specification, places the focus firmly on dynamic driving pleasure with features such as large cooling air inlets.

A range of alloy wheels in 18, 19 and 20‑inch sizes – the latter a first for the BMW X1 – will be available, while customers will be able to choose from an array of exterior paints, including newly available finishes. 

Enhanced equipment offering combines with new interior to take cabin ambience to next level  

A sport leather steering wheel, intelligent two-zone automatic climate control and a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation all come as standard in the new generation BMW X1, as do four USB-C ports, two 12V power sockets and a far greater number of driver assistance systems compared with the predecessor model.

Restructured equipment packages enable targeted individualisation of the X1. The premium character can be turned up another notch by optional features such as the Lights Package, ambient lighting, panoramic glass sunroof and the high output Harman Kardon Sound System.

The remodelled interior of the new BMW X1, with its new materials, layout, generous amounts of space and cutting-edge functionality bring an entirely new experience for the driver and occupants.

The design focuses squarely on assured driving pleasure and versatility, while its geometry and details take their cues from the interior concept of the BMW iX flagship that launched in New Zealand last year.

An increase to the cargo carrying capacity also enhances the practicality of the new BMW X1. Boot space has grown from 505 litres (with second row seats upright) of the predecessor model to 540 litres of the new model, and from 1550 litres to 1600 litres with the second row folded down.

Responsive TwinPower Turbo engine designed to engage

The new BMW X1 will launch in New Zealand later this year in a petrol variant, delivering high levels of response and optimum efficiency.

The BMW X1 sDrive18i features a 1.5-litre three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine with 115kW and 230Nm and provides impressive acceleration while consuming just 6.5 litres per 100km^* on the combined cycle.

The engine is mated to a seven-speed Steptronic transmission and double clutch set-up, with power sent exclusively to the front wheels.

BMW iX1: a new era of driving pleasure set to begin

The BMW iX1 xDrive30 is the first all-wheel-drive electric offering introduced by the brand in the premium compact crossover segment.

Two highly integrated drive units at the front and rear axles deliver a combined output of 230kW – taking the temporary boost effect into account – and post an overall torque figure of 494Nm.

The electric all-wheel-drive system ensures supreme traction and directional stability in all situations. The BMW iX1 xDrive30 completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 5.7 seconds.

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology additionally comprises the car’s highly efficient charging capability, including the improved charging software also found in the BMW i7, and a high-voltage battery positioned flat within the vehicle’s underbody. The high energy density of the battery endows the iX1 a range of 413 – 438 kilometres (Note: figures relating to output, performance, energy consumption and range for the BMW iX1 xDrive30 are predicted values based on the car’s current stage of development).

Chassis tuned for optimum blend of agility and ride comfort

All new BMW X1 models offer well-resolved handling characteristics in any situation and deliver the driving experience for which BMW is renowned.

The compact all-rounder’s sophisticated chassis technology produces a harmonious balance between agile handling on the one hand and long-distance comfort on the other.

The platform for driving pleasure is delivered via a body construction that reduces weight while increasing rigidity, a long wheelbase, wider tracks than the predecessor model, and targeted upgrades to the single-joint spring strut axle at the front and the three-link rear axle.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation is fitted as standard in the new BMW X1, enhancing both traction and directional stability. Other new features include the integrated braking system and the extra, lift-related damping at the front axle.

The optional adaptive M suspension features frequency-selective damping, sport steering and a 15-millimetre drop in ride height.

Wide variety of systems for automated driving and parking

The technological advances made in the new BMW X1 compared with the outgoing model are also evident in the far greater variety of automated driving and parking systems.

Features include Cruise Control with brake function, the front-collision warning system and Parking Assistant including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant.

Other available assistance systems include Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, Active Navigation, exit warning function and BMW Head-Up Display, as well as the Surround View, Remote 3D View and BMW Drive Recorder.

Existing functions can be upgraded by means of the Remote Software Upgrades facility, which also makes it possible to add new functions via the BMW New Zealand Connected Drive store.

BMW Operating System 8 and BMW Curved Display further raise technology offering

The new BMW X1 treats its occupants to the latest-generation BMW iDrive multi-sensory vehicle experience in the form of the standard-fit BMW Live Cockpit Plus.

Based on BMW Operating System 8, it comprises the BMW Curved Display with its state-of-the-art graphics and menu structure along with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant that has gained additional skills.

The fully digital screen grouping is formed by the 10.25-inch information display and the control display with a screen diagonal of 10.7 inches. The new BMW iDrive is geared purposefully to providing intuitive touch and voice control, while the broad-based digitalisation of the interior enables the number of physical buttons, controls and switches required for operation to be significantly reduced.

The new My Modes combine individually selectable vehicle settings with matching experience worlds for the interior.

In addition, a smartphone tray with indirect illumination on both sides takes centre stage in the front section of the centre console. Phones can be secured by a movable clasp and positioned upright in a portrait position to be visible to both driver and passenger while being charged wirelessly.

In addition to this, BMW Digital Key Plus, the BMW ID functionality and smartphone integration using both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto expand the X1’s range of abilities and complement multiple lifestyles and preferences.

The all-new BMW iX M60, which broke cover earlier this year and will bring a new level of electrified performance to the segment, will launch in New Zealand in the middle of 2022. 

The iX M60 is the third variant in the BMW iX line-up and represents the latest fully electric offering from the BMW M high performance brand following the BMW i4 M50, which will launch in New Zealand in June. 

Launches of the iX M60 and i4 M50 models are significant developments in a year when BMW M celebrates its 50^th anniversary. 

The output figures and performance capability of the iX M60 are befitting of BMW M, with up to 455kW and 1100Nm of torque.

The all-new model accelerates from zero to 100km/h in just 3.8-seconds and has a top speed of 250km/h.  

Its towering straight-line ability is complemented by multiple elements to enhance dynamic potential and body control, including electric all-wheel-drive, a highly responsive actuator-based wheel slip limitation and suspension technology integrating BMW M specifically tuned dual-axle air suspension with automatic level control.

Ideal platform for honed sports activity vehicle performance

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) of the BMW iX M60 was designed for particularly flexible charging.

It can charge alternating current (AC) with a power of up to 11kW, while direct current (DC) can be charged at a rate of up to 200kW.

For example, the battery charge level in the BMW iX M60 can be raised from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes. In addition, range con be increased by up to 150 kilometres in just 10 minutes at a DC fast-charging station starting with a battery charge level of 10 percent.

The iX M60’s powerful proportions, reduced surface design and precise details characterise the clear exterior look and give the vehicle a distinctive presence.

Holistic sustainability concept

Responsibly sourced resources throughout the entire value chain and the maximum reduction of the CO2 footprint throughout the product life cycle are clear reminders of BMW i’s understanding of forward-looking premium mobility.

This holistic approach is consistently implemented in vehicle development, throughout the supply chain and in the production of the BMW iX M60. The BMW i brand stands for both ecological and social sustainability.

The supply of cobalt and lithium required for the high-voltage batteries is procured by the BMW Group from controlled sources in Australia and Morocco and delivered to the battery cell manufacturers. The design principle of the electric motors makes it possible to dispense with the use of rare earth metals in the rotors of the drives. In addition, the company acquires aluminium produced using electricity from solar energy plants.

One hundred per cent green electricity is used for manufacturing the vehicles as well as for manufacturing battery cells. A high proportion of secondary aluminium and recycled plastic also contributes to the resource-efficient production of the BMW iX M60.

Interior aspects include FSC-certified wood and other natural materials, while recycled fishing nets serve as raw material for the floor coverings and floor mats.

It can charge alternating current (AC) with a power of up to 11kW into the high-voltage battery. Direct current (DC) can be charged with power of up to 200kW.

For example, the battery charge level in the BMW iX M60 can be raised from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes. In addition, range con be increased by up to 150 kilometres in just 10 minutes at a DC fast-charging station starting with a battery charge level of 10 percent.

Clear design language, innovative feeling of space and comprehensive standard equipment

The iX M60’s powerful proportions, reduced surface design and precise details characterise the clear exterior look and give the vehicle a distinctive presence.

Its high-performance character is underlined by aesthetic touches including brake callipers of the sports brake system painted in dark blue with M logo, optional BMW Individual Titanium Bronze Exterior Line and M logos in the new High Gloss Black/Titanium Bronze finish on the front side panels and the rear of the vehicle.  

Twenty two inch aerodynamic alloy wheels with an exclusive Titanium Bronze design will also be available on locally-delivered iX M60 models.

The spacious, high-quality and innovatively designed interior helps the driver concentrate while also providing a high level of travel comfort and feel of progressive luxury.

Multifunction seats with integrated headrests, the large BMW Curved Display, hexagonal steering wheel and anthracite-coloured roof liner are all designed to further enhance driving pleasure.

Absence of the centre tunnel creates additional legroom as well as space for storage and a centre console designed in the style of a high-quality piece of furniture.

The no-cost optional Suite interior includes olive leaf extract tanned natural leather seats, instrument panel, centre console and door trim surfaces, as well as Gold Bronze surfaces and controls.

Holistic sustainability concept

Responsibly sourced resources throughout the entire value chain and the maximum reduction of the CO2 footprint throughout the product life cycle are clear reminders of BMW i’s understanding of forward-looking premium mobility.

This holistic approach is consistently implemented in vehicle development, throughout the supply chain and in the production of the BMW iX M60. The BMW i brand stands for both ecological and social sustainability.

The supply of cobalt and lithium required for the high-voltage batteries is procured by the BMW Group from controlled sources in Australia and Morocco and delivered to the battery cell manufacturers. The design principle of the electric motors makes it possible to dispense with the use of rare earth metals in the rotors of the drives. In addition, the company acquires aluminium produced using electricity from solar energy plants.

One hundred per cent green electricity is used for manufacturing the vehicles as well as for manufacturing battery cells. A high proportion of secondary aluminium and recycled plastic also contributes to the resource-efficient production of the BMW iX M60.

Interior aspects include FSC-certified wood and other natural materials, while recycled fishing nets serve as raw material for the floor coverings and floor mats.

Munich. Digitisation is delivering an integrated user experience characterised by individuality and emotionalisation in the interior of current BMW models. The My Modes allow the driver to tailor the atmosphere in the interior entirely to their personal mood and the driving experience they want. With the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink being presented on the occasion of CES 2022, the Munich-based premium car manufacturer is offering the prospect of a future technology that uses digitisation to also adapt the exterior of a vehicle to different situations and individual wishes. The surface of the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink can vary its shade at the driver's prompting.

The fluid colour changes are made possible by a specially developed body wrap that is tailored precisely to the contours of the all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle from BMW. When stimulated by electrical signals, the electrophoretic technology brings different colour pigments to the surface, causing the body skin to take on the desired colouration. The innovative E Ink technology opens completely new ways of changing the vehicle's appearance in line with the driver's aesthetic preferences, the environmental conditions or even functional requirements. The technology thus offers unprecedented potential for personalisation in the area of exterior design. The BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink demonstrates this potential to impressive effect. Against this background, the BMW Group is driving the development of the technology so that a new form of personalisation can be experienced both on the outside and in the inside of future production vehicles.

Already today, the colour chosen for a car is an expression of the driver's personality. The choice of exterior paints available for current BMW models covers a wide colour spectrum. In this way, the longing for a wildly expressive, extravagant, or sporty appearance on the outside can be taken into account as well as the desire for an understated, subtle or elegant appearance. New variants are added each year that reflect the characteristics of the model in question and that allow the brand to keep setting trends in the area of exterior design.

New technologies will provide a whole new level of decision-making freedom in the future. "This gives the driver the freedom to express different facets of their personality or even their enjoyment of change outwardly, and to redefine this each time they sit into their car," says Stella Clarke, Head of Project for the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink. "Similar to fashion or the status ads on social media channels, the vehicle then becomes an expression of different moods and circumstances in daily life."

How a variable exterior colour can increase efficiency.

A variable exterior colour can also contribute to wellness in the interior and to the efficiency of the vehicle. This is done by taking account of the different abilities of light and dark colours when it comes to reflecting sunlight and the associated absorption of thermal energy. A white surface reflects a lot more sunlight than a black one. By implication, heating of the vehicle and passenger compartment as a result of strong sunlight and high outside temperatures can be reduced by changing the exterior to a light colour. In cooler weather, a dark outer skin will help the vehicle to absorb noticeably more warmth from the sun.

In both cases, selective colour changes can help to cut the amount of cooling and heating required from the vehicle's air conditioning. This reduces the amount of energy the vehicle electrical system needs and with it also the vehicle's fuel or electricity consumption. In an all-electric car, changing the colour in line with the weather can therefore also help to increase the range. In the interior, the technology could, for example, prevent the dashboard from heating up too much.

E Ink technology itself is extremely energy efficient. Unlike displays or projectors, the electrophoretic technology needs absolutely no energy to keep the chosen colour state constant. Current only flows during the short colour changing phase.

Millions of paint capsules in a custom wrap.

Electrophoretic colouring is based on a technology developed by E Ink that is most well-known from the displays used in eReaders. The surface coating of the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink contains many millions of microcapsules, with a diameter equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. Each of these microcapsules contains negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments. Depending on the chosen setting, stimulation by means of an electrical field causes either the white or the black pigments to collect at the surface of the microcapsule, giving the car body the desired shade.

Achieving this effect on a vehicle body involves the application of many precisely fitted ePaper segments. Generative design processes are implemented to ensure the segments reflect the characteristic contours of the vehicle and the resulting variations in light and shadow. The generative design algorithms enable the necessary formability and flexibility required to tailor the ePaper exactly to the design lines of the vehicle.

Laser cutting technologies guarantee high precision in generating each segment. After the segments are applied and the power supply for stimulating the electrical field is connected, the entire body is warmed and sealed to guarantee optimum and uniform colour reproduction during every colour change.

The first-ever fully electric BMW iX3, which showcases new generation technology, connectivity, design language and fully electric driving enjoyment, will arrive in New Zealand in Q4 2021.

The BMW iX3 will be positioned as a medium-sized SAV and the first model to fulfil BMW’s promised ‘Power of Choice’ strategy offering customers a choice of

powertrains to choose from in the segment: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric options each offer unique benefits and suitability to customer’s preferred lifestyle.  

The all-new BMW iX3 will be built with Sustainability as a key focus, from procurement of raw materials via the supply chain, through to production, use phase and end-of-life recycling.

The amount of the raw cobalt material used in the high-voltage battery of the BMW iX3 has been reduced by around a third compared with the previous-generation battery in the 2019 BMW i3 model.

The BMW Group follows its own procurement process for the cobalt and lithium it supplies to the producers of the battery cells, part of which involves strict compliance with environmental and human rights standards.

Renewable energy is used both for the manufacture of the battery cells and in the production of the vehicle.

The BMW-specific design principle that underpins the electric motor dispenses with the need for rare-earth metals in the momentum-generating rotor.

Extensive use of secondary raw materials in the manufacture of aluminium castings and thermoplastics further help the BMW Group achieve its ’80-40-20’ goals in cutting CO2 emissions and promoting its ‘Secondary First’ approach to resource use.

Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology sets tone for the future

The all-new BMW iX3 blazes a trail for driving pleasure in a new generation of electric vehicles from the BMW i brand.

It is the first model to feature fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. This system is also found on the BMW iX, which launches in Q4 this year, and the BMW i4, which will go on sale in New Zealand by Q1 2022.  

Its integrated drive unit brings the electric motor, power electronics and transmission together within a single housing, and generates 210kW and 400Nm.  

The iX3 also features rear-wheel-drive – a hallmark BMW handling characteristic that carries over seamlessly into the world of EVs.

The high-voltage battery in the BMW iX3 is also the product of fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology.

Its gross energy content of 80kWh and the exceptional efficiency of the electric motor enable a range of up to 460 kilometres as calculated on the WLTP test cycle.

Flexible vehicle architecture with array of practicality features

The new BMW iX3’s sure-footed and safe driving characteristics are the result of an outstandingly well-resolved overall design.

It shares the rugged versatility of the conventionally powered BMW X3 variants, provides generous levels of space for five occupants, has a load compartment with a capacity from 510 litres to a maximum of 1,560 litres, bringing unrivalled practicality with its allure of emissions-free driving pleasure.

Production of the new BMW iX3 will commence at the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture’s Shenyang facility in China, starting September 2021.

Exterior design details convey style, sporting intent and sustainability elements

With its powerful proportions, precise lines and clear sculpted surfaces, the new BMW iX3 is every inch the modern Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

Colour accents in BMW i Blue, a largely enclosed BMW kidney grille and light-alloy wheels with optimised aerodynamics signify the presence of a purely electric drive system and a vehicle concept focused squarely on sustainability.

The characteristic blend of sporty driving pleasure and exceptional efficiency is showcased even more vividly in the exterior design.

The BMW kidney grille, a centrepiece of the front design, is now more striking than while being encased in a single-piece frame.

This comes in pearl-effect chrome with a blue accent – in familiar BMW i style – along the inner edges. The inner surfaces of the kidney grille elements have a mesh-like structure and feature a BMW i badge.

The new contours of the headlights, which are around 10 millimetres slimmer than on the previous model, also help to provide the new BMW iX3 its visually striking looks.

This lends the front end a distinct similarity to that of the BMW iX and BMW i4 electric models.

The new iX3 is also fitted as standard with Adaptive LED Headlights with matrix function including variable light distribution and non-dazzling High Beam Assistant.

Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight can be specified as an option. At speeds above 60 km/h, the dynamic Laserlight module increases high-beam range to a maximum of 650 metres and follows the course of the road.

Blue inlays in the L-shaped light elements of the daytime driving lights identify its inclusion. The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car was the first production vehicle to feature the sophisticated laser light technology in 2014.  

M Sport package included as standard

The M Sport package, supplied as standard for all iX3 variants in New Zealand, provides a commanding road presence and begins with a prominent three-dimensional surface design for the front apron.

The lower air intake, which comes with 10-stage active air flap control to cool the drive system components and brakes, has gained in size. The air curtains positioned at the outer edges of the front end are now L-shaped and carry blue accents.

The air breathers in the front side panels additionally feature a M-specific design, while muscular and aerodynamically optimised surfacing marks out the rear apron.

The rear design is characterised by rear diffuser elements finished in Frozen Grey or optional BMW i Blue, while contours of the LED rear lights are in black. 

Slim light graphic and three-dimensional pincer-shaped contouring with delicately integrated horizontal turn signal indicators enhance the iX3’s rear design in low light conditions.

The BMW iX3 will be offered in New Zealand with 19-inch aerodynamic wheels as standard for the iX3 Inspiring and 20-inch aerodynamic wheels as standard for the iX3 Impressive.

These new wheels help provide the vehicle its low drag coefficient figure of just 0.29 while delivering a premium appearance with their bicolour design.

Driving pleasure and cabin controls further enhanced for new model

The sporting nature of the BMW iX3 stands out prominently in the cabin.

Sport seats trimmed in leather ‘Vernasca’ upholstery are fitted as standard, while a modern control panel in the centre console and restyled controls in the centre of the instrument panel add to the vehicle’s progressive, premium ambience.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional is fitted as standard and includes a control display whose screen diagonal has been increased to an impressive 12.3 inches.

Blue accents applied to the Start/Stop button – which is now located in the centre console – as well as the gear selector lever and the BMW emblem on the steering wheel allude to the pure-electric drive system at the heart of the BMW iX3.

Other model-specific cues include the model lettering on the centre console and door sill plates bearing the BMW i logo.

Elements in the instrument cluster and control display screens also reflect the presence of the highly advanced electric drive system.

Standard-fitment ambient lighting additionally features BMW i blue illumination in its default setting.

The new BMW iX3 comes as standard with a Start/Stop acoustic sequence developed as part of a collaboration between Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and BMW Group Creative Director Sound, Renzo Vitale.

When the Start/Stop button is pressed, a short composition sets the scene for the electric driving experience in store.

Sharp dynamics combine with refined road manners

The new BMW iX3 brings together typical BMW sportiness with a high level of comfort.

The acceleration potential of the all-electric powertrain with its immediate power delivery is complemented by precise handling, outstanding cornering dynamics and optimised traction.

Positioning of the high-voltage battery unit between the axles provides a centre of gravity 7.5cm lower than that of a conventionally powered BMW X3.

In addition, the vehicle benefits from a wide track on the front and rear axles, model-specific wheel camber settings for the five-link rear suspension and a balanced axle load distribution.

The optimised aerodynamic properties of the body and its high structural rigidity also contribute to a high level of engagement.

Driving dynamics are further enhanced with the fitment of adaptive suspension as standard.

Highly integrated drive system with electrically excited electric motor

The fifth generation BMW eDrive unit brings together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single housing.

This highly integrated electric drive system topology located in the model-specific rear axle subframe allows a substantial reduction in both the installation space required and the weight of the components relative to the power they produce.

This has brought about an increase in power density of around 30 per cent compared with the BMW eDrive technology previously featured in electrified models.

The electric motor in the new BMW iX3 works according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor and therefore differs significantly from other solutions on the market. The excitation of the rotor is not induced by fixed permanent magnets but rather the feed-in of electric power.

This design allows the rare earth metals required for magnetic components to be avoided entirely in the manufacture of the rotor.

The latest version of the electric motor also demonstrates efficiency of up to 93 per cent – an increase of 53 per cent on modern combustion engines.

The drive system can rev to 17,000rpm and generates maximum output of 210kW, which is produced early and can be sustained over a wide rev band.

The motor’s peak torque of 400Nm can be summoned from rest thanks to thoughtfully managed excitation of the rotor and is likewise maintained into the upper reaches of the rev range.

The motor’s drive power is transferred along the shortest possible path to the single-ratio transmission, which is installed in the same housing, and from there to the rear wheels.

In the process, advanced driving stability control technology, including the near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology that was first featured on the BMW i3, helps to sustain forward momentum even in adverse road and weather conditions.

The new BMW iX3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.8 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 180km/h.

High-voltage, high-capacity battery

The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX3 is based on the latest Nickel-rich technology familiar from other BMW applications.

The lithium-ion battery is composed of 188 individually controllable, prismatic battery cells – each cased in aluminium – which are grouped into 10 modules. The battery is positioned low down in the vehicle floor as an integral component of the body.

The new-generation battery has a gross energy content of 80kWh, of which 74kWh is utilised, giving it an advanced mass-to-capacity ratio. The high-voltage battery’s outstanding energy density, the electric motor’s outstanding efficiency, the adaptive recuperation function, a weight-minimising design and the reduction in the body’s aerodynamic drag add up to an all-encompassing sustainability concept and impressive capabilities in everyday use and over long-distance journeys.

The BMW iX3 therefore differs significantly from other electric vehicles in its segment whose range is boosted mostly by adoption of larger high-voltage batteries. These impact negatively on the vehicle’s weight and, by extension, its overall efficiency.

Adaptive recuperation enhances efficiency and comfort

The BMW iX3 comes fitted with an innovative adaptive recuperation system that optimises its range while delivering a high level of comfort.

Intensity of the Brake Energy Regeneration is adapted to the road situation via input from the BMW driver assistance system sensors.

If the iX3 determines a junction or vehicle is ahead, it will engage the full level of recuperation, increasing the deceleration effect and using the electric motor to return energy to the battery.

On the open road where intersections and vehicles are less prevalent, the vehicle engages its coasting function. However, it will intelligently intervene when required during this mode by initiating recuperation when the turn indicators are activated. 

Adaptive recuperation is enabled when the driving position D is engaged using the selector lever on the centre console. The driver can also select a high, medium or low Brake Energy Regeneration setting in the iDrive menu to suit their needs or style.

When driving position B is selected, the distinctive one-pedal feeling characteristic of BMW Group’s electric vehicles is brought to the fore thanks to the implementation of maximum energy recuperation.

Combined Charging Unit for fast charging at up to 150kW

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in the new BMW iX3 enables an extremely high level of flexibility when it comes to using charging stations of different types.

When using alternating current (AC) terminals, the CCU enables single-phase charging at up to 7.4kW and three-phase charging at up to 11kW. Plugging the vehicle into a direct current (DC) fast-charging station allows it to take energy on board at a rate of up to 150kW.

When plugged into a BMW Wallbox, the high-voltage battery can be charged from 0 to 100 per cent in just 7.5 hours.

A DC fast-charging station, meanwhile, can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent of its full capacity in 32 minutes. A 10-minute charge at one of these stations provides enough power to add 100 kilometres to the driving range on the WLTP cycle.

Connected charging with new features in My BMW app

The new My BMW app, which launched earlier this year, includes enhanced functionality for electric vehicles. 

Extensive information on charging history, charging process and control of charging and climate settings are fully integrated.  

It is also possible to receive push notifications, such as when the vehicle is fully charged.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto fully integrated

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are seamlessly integrated as part of BMW Live Cockpit Plus.

The iX3 provides the platform for Apple CarPlay to offer a wide range of digital services such as the Siri digital voice service, various map apps, music streaming services such as Apple Music or the WhatsApp messaging service.

The systems are integrated directly into the display and control system through a wireless connection via WLAN between the respective smartphone and the vehicle.

The driver can view important information from the apps shown on the centre control display, in the instrument cluster and on the standard-fitment BMW Head-Up Display (HUD).

Wireless Android Auto offers simple and safe use of smartphone functions such as music, media or messaging apps while driving.

With the help of the Google Assistant, occupants can interact with the vehicle via a smartphone and the actions shown on the vehicle's info display.

 Highlights of the interaction between Android Auto and BMW are the convenient wireless networking and the intelligent integration of Google Maps navigation instructions in the HUD.

Driver assistance systems with unique functions

The BMW iX3 is supported by a comprehensive array of driver assistance systems fitted as standard, including the highly advanced Reversing Assistant.

Driving Assistant Professional, which comes as standard, includes Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection, Steering and Lane Control Assistant with active lane guidance, Crossing-traffic Warning for front and rear, Evasion Assistant, Crossroads Warning with city braking function and Speed Limit Assist.

The Parking Assistant Plus system integrates a range of features to aid in convenient and safe manoeuvring in tight and awkward spaces while also protecting the vehicle. The networked offering includes Park Assist, Active Park Distance Control, lateral parking aid, Reversing Assistant, Surround View system and Remote 3D View.

In addition, the iX3 is fitted with acoustic pedestrian protection. This system uses a virtual sound generator located on the vehicle exterior that emits a sound when driving at speeds of up to 30km/h to warn pedestrians and cyclists of the iX3’s presence.

The all-new BMW i4 will launch in New Zealand in the first quarter of next year with two variants – the i4 eDrive40 and the first-ever emissions-free BMW M car – the i4 M50. 

The BMW i4 M50 performance model adopts one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear to deliver a combined system output of 400kW and a range of 510 kilometres in the WLTP cycle.

The BMW i4 eDrive40 combines a 250kW electric motor with a classic rear-wheel-drive configuration and offers a WLTP range of 590 kilometres.

Both variants of the all-new BMW i4 will be manufactured at BMW Group Plant Munich with sustainability a core focus.

Electricity used to produce the vehicle in Munich is generated via hydroelectric plants in Bavaria, which is a key aspect of BMW Group’s plan to reduce its CO2 emissions in the production phase by 80 per cent by 2030.

Flexible vehicle architecture, higher level of overall coherence

Development of the BMW i4 was based on a flexible vehicle architecture in line with BMW Group’s transformation towards electric mobility.

This was devised, for the first time, for an all-electric drive system.

Among the highlights of the new electric powertrain are compact drive units that have an elastic bearing in their respective axle subframes.

The extremely slim high-voltage battery has a cell height of just 110 millimetres, is positioned low down in the vehicle floor and has a fixed connection with an aluminium shear panel and the front axle subframe.

A centre of gravity up to 53 millimetres lower than that of the BMW 3 Series Sedan combined with even weight distribution, a torsionally stiff and weight-minimised body, optimised aerodynamics (C_d of 0.24) and wide tracks provide the perfect recipe for BMW’s renowned sporting ability.

In addition, the vehicle concept offers a trademark BMW solution to the traditional trade-off between sportiness and long-distance ability.

This is in the form of an efficient drive system technology and intelligent lightweight design that enables sharp dynamics and a long range without the need for large and heavy batteries.

The integrated application of all powertrain and chassis components also helps provide the BMW i4 a degree of peerless design coherence.

BMW Group’s technological expertise and long experience in the development of dynamic premium cars imbue the BMW i4 with dynamic driving abilities extending far beyond the rapid straight-line acceleration typical of a powerful electric car.

The result is effortless progress, even in challenging driving conditions, as well as precisely controllable handling.

Model-specific chassis technology and electric all-wheel drive

The standard chassis technology of the BMW i4 comprises a double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle with bespoke tuning, lift-related dampers, electromechanical Servotronic steering and integrated braking system. 

Both the i4 eDrive40e and M50 models for New Zealand come standard with adaptive M suspension that incorporates bespoke tuning, as well as variable sport steering, M Sport brakes and 19-inch M Light alloy wheels.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation optimises traction and directional stability in all road and weather conditions. This extremely fast-acting and precise system is fitted as standard on the BMW i4.

On the M50 variant, the system teams up with electric all-wheel-drive to deliver exceptional dynamic poise during bursts of speed and under intense lateral acceleration.

The drive torque control for both motors reacts notably faster and with far greater accuracy than would be possible with a transfer case positioned between the axles.

Highly integrated and efficient drive system technology

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology in the BMW i4 comprises drive units that bring together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single housing.

This highly integrated electric drive system gives a power density of up to 2.14 kW/kg and a high efficiency factor. 

The motors work according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor.

The excitation of the rotor in the BMW i4 motors is not induced by fixed permanent magnets but rather the precisely controlled feed-in of electric energy.

The performance characteristics of the motors are defined by their considerable torque. This is available on tap from pull-away and sustained over an extremely wide rev band.

Demanding a large amount of power for more than 10 seconds in the BMW i4 M50 triggers Sport Boost, which unfurls not only the drive system’s maximum output but also its mighty maximum system torque of 795Nm.

This enables the BMW M model to sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds.

The drive system in the BMW i4 eDrive40 generates peak torque of 430Nm, enabling it to achieve a 0-100km/h time of just 5.7 seconds.

The sporty driving experience is accompanied by BMW IconicSounds Electric, which is fitted as standard on both variants. This enables integration of new drive sound variants created as part of BMW’s collaboration with legendary film and music composer Hans Zimmer.

Adaptive and individually adjustable recuperation

Adaptive recuperation gives the efficiency and range of the BMW i4 an additional boost.

In driving position D, a high, medium or low brake energy regeneration setting for all driving situations can be selected in the BMW iDrive menu.

In driving position B, a high level of recuperation is activated automatically, generating the distinctive one-pedal feeling.

Maximum recuperation power is 116kW in the BMW i4 eDrive40 and 195kW in the BMW i4 M50.

High-voltage battery with the latest battery cell technology

Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprises a high-voltage battery with the latest battery cell technology.

The gravimetric energy density of the lithium-ion battery has been increased by around 20 per cent in comparison with the battery in the current BMW i3. The gross energy content of the high-voltage battery is 84kWh.

An integrated heating and cooling system for the interior, the high-voltage battery and the drive system – which operates using an exceptionally efficient heat pump function – comes as standard on the BMW i4.

Anticipatory thermal management allows the operating temperature of the high-voltage battery to be optimised ahead of a stop at a fast-charging station, paving the way for rapid and efficient charging.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) of the BMW i4 has been designed to enable extremely flexible battery charging with DC charging possible at up to 200kW.

For example, in a short mid-journey stop at a high-power charging station, the car’s range can be increased by as much as 164 kilometres (BMW i4 eDrive40) and 140 kilometres (BMW i4 M50) within 10 minutes from a 10 per cent charge level.

Design: the visual expression of dynamism, elegance and sustainability

The BMW i4 blends the customary sporting elegance of the BMW brand’s coupés with the comfort of a four-door model and an injection of modern functionality.

The stretched proportions and clear use of forms in its body design send a message of exclusivity and the dynamic flair for which BMW is renowned.

Short overhangs, slim pillars, doors with frameless windows and a roofline that flows smoothly into the rear underscore a silhouette that befits the BMW coupé mould.

Slim headlights, which are fitted as standard with BMW Laserlight on i4 M50 and available as an option for i4 eDrive40, combine with the striking BMW kidney grille to define the front end of the all-new BMW i4.

Distinctive design features that emphasise high performance also feature on both locally delivered BMW i4 models. 

The interior brings a driver-focused cockpit and ambience of premium luxury together with a generously sized, variable-use space.

Acoustic glazing, pre-heating and pre-conditioning come as standard, as do sport seats and a sports steering wheel.

The transmission selector, BMW iDrive controller and function keys are positioned on a control panel in the centre console that exudes modern design.

The large tailgate has an automatic opening and closing mechanism as standard. Load compartment capacity ranges between 470 and 1,290 litres.

Elements include seat heating, BMW Individual trim variants, electric glass roof and the premium harman/kardon surround sound system.

Integration of the new generation BMW iDrive control/operation system

The new generation of the iDrive display and control/operation system fitted to the BMW i4 extends the interaction between driver and vehicle into natural dialogue.

It is based on the new BMW Operating System 8 and has been designed with a clear focus on the touchscreen functionality of the BMW curved display and

spoken communication with the upgraded BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The BMW curved display fully digital screen grouping brings together a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display behind a glass surface angled towards the driver. The digital Intelligent Personal Assistant has gained additional skills and uses a new graphic to communicate with the vehicle’s occupants.

The three-zone automatic climate control system fitted as standard in the BMW i4 uses nanofibre filter technology to purify the air inside the car and is now controlled via a touchscreen display.

Temperature is adjusted using the intelligently coordinated activation of airflow, seat heating and steering wheel heating.

Remote Software Upgrades keep the car’s software constantly up to date, while the BMW Connected Drive Store allows customers to download vehicle upgrades that can be fully functional within minutes. 

Wide variety of driver assistance systems

Forty assistance functions are fitted as standard or available as options to provide safe and comfortable driving and parking. Highlights include Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control and Speed Limit Assist.

Flexible and sustainable manufacturing at BMW Group Plant Munich

The BMW i4 is produced as part of a flexible manufacturing production process at BMW Group Plant Munich on an assembly line shared with models with combustion engines and plug-in hybrid drive systems.

One hundred per cent green energy is used for both vehicle production and the manufacture of battery cells.

The BMW Group procures the cobalt and lithium required for these high-voltage batteries from controlled sources and then delivers it to the battery cell suppliers.

The design principle for the electric motors allows the use of rare earth metals to be avoided in the drive system rotors. A high proportion of secondary raw materials and recycled materials helps to reduce the quantities of resources used in production of the BMW i4.

The BMW iX3’s integration in the new Marvel Studios film coincides with the launch of the updated model. The new features introduced for the iX3 in September 2021 primarily affect the design of the exterior, and there are also changes for the interior and equipment. The first-ever BMW iX, which showcases new generation technology, connectivity, design language and fully electric driving enjoyment, will arrive in New Zealand in Q4 2021 with two variants.

The New Zealand iX line-up will comprise of the xDrive40 Sport and iX xDrive50 Sport, both offering extensive standard packed with a plethora of luxury, safety, technology and convenience features.

The two power systems at the heart of the iX models are highly advanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive components, responsive and with abundant power – 240kW in the xDrive40 Sport, and 385kW in the xDrive50 Sport.

The latest battery cell technology results in WLTP-calculated ranges of up to 630 kilometres in the iX xDrive50 and up to 425 kilometres in the iX xDrive40.

Also set to join the iX line-up at a later date is the powerhouse BMW iX M60, which will produce a maximum output in excess of 440 kW^# and deliver an exceptionally sporty all-electric driving experience.

Highly-integrated and efficient drive technology

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive components fitted to the BMW iX sees the electric motor, power electronics and transmission coming together within a single housing.

This highly-integrated electric drive system maximises power density and efficiency in a compact package positioned across the front and rear axles.

Both motors in the BMW iX operate according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor, where the excitation of the rotor is induced by the feed-in of electrical energy rather than fixed permanent magnets.

This enables maximum torque on tap immediately upon activation, as well as a tall, broad and flat torque band. Combined torque peaks at 630Nm on the BMW iX xDrive40, towers at 765Nm on the BMW iX xDrive50.

Electric all-wheel-drive and near-actuator wheel slip limitation

The electric all-wheel-drive system in the BMW iX transmits exactly the right amount of drive torque to the front and rear wheels in all driving situations.

Its intelligent drive control enables fully variable power transmission, ranging from highly efficient pure rear-wheel-drive to traction-maximising all-wheel-drive.

The near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology fitted in tandem with all-wheel-drive for the first time brings about a further improvement in traction and handling stability.

This system, which is integrated in the motor management, produces precise and lightning fast corrective inputs. The result is effortless progress at all times even in adverse weather and road conditions.

The xDrive50 posts impressive acceleration times with 0 to 100km/h achieved in just 4.6 seconds, while the xDrive40 hits 100km/h from rest in 6.1 seconds.

High-voltage battery with the latest battery cell technology

The BMW iX features fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology with state-of-the-art high voltage battery cell technology.

Volumetric energy density at cell level is up by around 40 per cent compared with the high-voltage battery in the 2020 BMW i3.

The BMW iX xDrive50 is fitted with a high-voltage battery with a gross energy content of 112kWh, while the battery unit for the BMW iX xDrive40 has a gross energy content of 77kWh.

The standard specification of the BMW iX includes an integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin, together with its high-voltage battery and a drive system that operates using an exceptionally efficient heat pump function.

Anticipatory thermal management enables the high-voltage battery’s operating temperature to be optimised for quick and efficient charging prior to a scheduled stop at a fast-charging station.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in the BMW iX offers supremely flexible charging options in both AC and DC formats. 

DC power can be taken on board at a rate of up to 200kW (iX xDrive50) or 150kW (iX xDrive40). This allows the battery’s state of charge to be increased from 10 to 80 per cent in just 35 minutes in the BMW iX xDrive50 or 31 minutes in the iX xDrive40.

Range can be increased by up to 150 kilometres on the iX xDrive50 and more than 95 kilometres for the iX xDrive40 in just 10 minutes when they are plugged into a DC fast-charging station with an initial battery charge of 10 per cent.

Adaptive and individually regulated recuperation

Adaptive recuperation gives a further boost to the efficiency and electric range of the BMW iX.

Intelligently connected drive management means the intensity of the brake energy recuperation during deceleration and active braking can be specifically adapted to different road situations, as detected by data from the navigation system and the sensors used by the driver assistance systems.

When approaching a junction, for example, the degree of recuperation is automatically increased, maximising energy recuperation while simultaneously harnessing the deceleration effect to a standstill.

On the open road, coasting functions can take over, allowing the car to free wheel with no drive power whenever the driver eases off the accelerator.

Adaptive recuperation is the default setting in driving position D. Alternatively, the driver can choose a high, medium or low Brake Energy Regeneration setting for all driving situations via the BMW iDrive menu.

The highest recuperation setting is automatically activated in driving position B, which also produces the one-pedal driving experience synonymous with electric vehicles.

Information on the energy flow can be further viewed in the control display of the BMW iX no matter which driving position is selected. An integrated ‘Efficiency Trainer’ offers hints for driving in a very economical manner, while the range horizon clearly illustrates the impact of driving style on the high-voltage battery’s charge level.

Carbon Cage and optimised chassis/handling package

The body structure, design principle and chassis tuning of the BMW iX are perfectly calibrated to blend superb ride comfort with sporty handling characteristics.

The iX features aluminium spaceframe construction and carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the roof, sides and rear of its ‘Carbon Cage’, resulting in an intelligent material mix that increases rigidity at the same time as minimising weight.

Optimised aerodynamic properties contribute to the car’s low drag coefficient of just 0.25, maximising efficiency and range.

The high-voltage battery is located low down in the car’s underbody, contributing to agile and responsive handling. 

The standard chassis technology for the BMW iX comprises a double-wishbone front axle, five-link rear axle, lift-related dampers and an electric steering system with Servotronic function and a variable ratio.

These features combine to create well-balanced driving characteristics that enable the BMW iX to feel solid and comfortable but also agile when the need arises.

22-inch Aerodynamic wheels are fitted as standard to both Sport variants. The design on these specially-created wheels are also optimised to reduce the amount of turbulent air created around the wheels, further optimising efficiency. 

Premiere of new generation BMW iDrive and operating software

The BMW iX also sees debut of the latest generation of iDrive, based on BMW Operating System 8.

The new Operating System makes the most of the new BMW Curved Display and verbal communication with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which has also undergone an extensive upgrade.

New ‘My Modes’ personalisation options expand the range of vehicle settings that can be selected, thereby creating an all-encompassing personal driving experience.

Navigation using the cloud-based system BMW Maps and Augmented Reality Video in the control display ensures quick and accurate route planning while also making it easy for the driver to find their way on the road.

The BMW iX also integrates 5G onboard mobile technology for high-speed data transmission, future-proofing its infotainment systems for innovations to come.

Wide variety of driver assistance systems

The new technology toolkit in the BMW iX offers considerable potential for the development of automated driving and parking functions.

A new generation of sensors, a new software stack and a powerful computing platform provide the basis for exceptional intelligence. Five cameras, five radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors are used to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings.

The BMW iX comes equipped with the most extensive set of standard driver assistance systems ever seen on a BMW. The front collision warning system, for instance, now detects oncoming traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians when turning.

Steering and Lane Control Assistant, both of which are standard on New Zealand-delivered models, have been significantly expanded, while Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function offers enhanced situational distance adjustment.

The exit warning function, which alerts to the presence of cyclists or pedestrians in the surrounding area before the doors are opened, and the Remote Theft Recorder, are both new features.

Also on the standard equipment list are Parking Assistant including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant.

Exterior design exudes progressive luxury; spacious interior provides premium, feel-good ambience

The pioneering character of the BMW iX clearly shines through in its exterior design.

The reduced design language and precisely crafted details melds with the body’s muscular Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) proportions and imposing presence to create an aura of progressive luxury.

Standout exterior features include the almost completely blanked-off BMW kidney grille, whose surface is the product of innovative manufacturing techniques and which incorporates camera and radar sensors.

The placement of components is part of BMW’s Shy Tech philosophy where elements are seamlessly integrated and in some cases hidden from view.

The kidney grille also has an in-built cleaning system and self-healing function for remedying light stone chips.

The BMW iX has been rigorously designed from the inside out with a focus on improving quality of life and personal well-being in mind.

Vast amounts of room and newly developed seats with integral head restraints set the tone for the luxurious ambience. The absence of a centre tunnel creates extra legroom and sufficient space for storage facilities and a centre console designed in the style of a high-quality piece of furniture.

The premium and thoughtfully minimalistic feel of the cabin is also enhanced – as with exterior elements – via the use of Shy Tech, with certain features deliberately positioned out of sight such as speakers, intricately styled air vents and heated surfaces.  

Feeler bars in the control panel, active haptic input buttons and a rocker switch for gear selection add futuristic instrumental flourishes.

In addition to the BMW Curved Display, the iX’s hexagonal steering wheel and frameless projector integration for the optional Head‑Up Display further add to the futuristic interior and focused driving experience.

All models feature the ‘Suite’ interior as standard, with exclusive olive leaf-tanned leather providing the ambience of a luxurious private living space in a selection of new colours such as Stone Grey, Amido and Castanea with highlights in Gold Bronze.

On request, customers can also choose an animal-free interior with the iX’s ‘Loft’ option, a cloth/microfibre upholstery package with Gold Bronze highlights that delivers the same luxurious and more minimalist feel.

The Panorama Glass Roof Sky Lounge, which is standard on iX xDrive50 Sport, is the largest panoramic glass roof ever offered by BMW at one metre wide and two metres long.

The large glass roof also features an electro-chromatic shade function that provides UV and solar heat protection to provide a comfortable cabin environment at all times. 

The automatic climate control system in the BMW iX comes with a nano-particle filter to purify the air and new touchscreen controls. The system intelligently combines interior ventilation and surface, seat and steering wheel heating to maximise occupants’ sense of well-being.

In addition to acoustic pedestrian protection, the BMW iX also features a specially composed drive sound, which adds to the thrill of the driving experience by providing authentic feedback in response to accelerator movements and speed.

The BMW IconicSounds Electric function included as standard also allows new sound variants from a collaboration with film score composer Hans Zimmer to be added to the acoustic repertoire.

Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing using purely green power, monitored raw materials extraction, high proportion of natural and recycled materials

All variants of the BMW iX are be produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing.

Both the vehicle itself and the battery cells are manufactured using green power across the board, with a highly sustainable value chain that avoids primary resource use as much as possible built in to the production process.

BMW Group procures the cobalt and lithium required for the high-voltage batteries from controlled sources in Australia and Morocco and delivers it to the battery cell manufacturers.

The design principle for the electric motors allows the use of rare earth metals to be avoided in the drive system rotors. The company also smelts part of the aluminium used in the production of the car using green power from solar energy plants.

A high proportion of secondary aluminium and reused plastic also contribute to the resource-efficient production of the BMW iX. Its interior uses FSC-certified wood, leather tanned with olive leaf extracts and other natural materials. Recycled fishing nets are among the raw materials used for the floor coverings and mats.

Munich. Local emission-free driving pleasure has never been greater than with the first-ever BMW iX and the first-ever BMW i4. The fitting soundtrack for the debut of the latest all-electric models is called "Higher Power" and comes from the British band Coldplay. You can hear the quartet's latest single in the TV commercials filmed for launching the joint worldwide communication campaign for the two new models. It delivers the perfect message with the lyric line "This joy is electric". The song for a new era of individual mobility marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration between BMW and Coldplay.

Back in 2014, Coldplay, made up of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman, performed before 1,500 fans at the end of their "Ghost Stories Tour" at BMW Welt in Munich. On the basis of the contact established at that time, a creative connection has now been established between the premium car manufacturer and the band, which has achieved worldwide success in the charts. This is based in particular on a common interest in sustainability in various areas of life.

"In the initial discussions we quickly realised: Coldplay and BMW share many common goals that go far beyond marketing," says Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President Customer and Brand BMW. "Based on this we developed a real co-creation in which the band actively contributed their thoughts and attitude to the design of our campaign for the BMW iX and the BMW i4." The shared awareness of sustainability gave rise to an intensive creative process between BMW and the British musicians and which will produce further co-created elements later in the year.

The song was played for the first time by French astronaut Thomas Pesquet on the International Space Station. Shortly after, the band played its first live set of 2021 for earthly audiences in a special livestream from the site of Glastonbury Festival.

The first locally emissions-free BMW M variant will headline the all-new BMW i4 line-up, scheduled to arrive in New Zealand in Q1, 2022. 

The BMW i4 M50 performance model adopts one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear to deliver a combined system output of 400kW and high-intensity electric driving pleasure with a range of 510 kilometres in the WLTP cycle.

The BMW i4 eDrive40 will join the line-up with a 250kW electric motor configured in classical rear-wheel-drive. Its maximum range as per the WLTP cycle is 590 kilometres.

Flexible vehicle architecture, higher level of overall coherence

In line with BMW Group’s ongoing second phase of transformation towards electric mobility, the development of the BMW i4 was based on a flexible vehicle architecture.

This was devised – from the outset, for the first time – for an all-electric drive system.

Among the highlights of the new electric powertrain are compact drive units that have an elastic bearing in their respective axle subframes.

The extremely slim high-voltage battery has a cell height of just 110 millimetres, is positioned low down in the vehicle floor and has a fixed connection with an aluminium shear panel and the front axle subframe.

A centre of gravity up to 53 millimetres lower than that of the BMW 3 Series Sedan, even weight distribution, a torsionally stiff and weight-minimised body and optimised aerodynamics (C_d of 0.24), plus a long wheelbase and wide tracks, provide the perfect recipe for BMW’s familiar sporting ability.

In addition, the vehicle concept offers a trademark BMW solution to the traditional clash between sportiness and long-distance ability. This is in the form of an efficient drive system technology and intelligent lightweight design that enables sharp dynamics and a long range without the need for disproportionately large and heavy batteries.

The integrated application of all powertrain and chassis components also helps provide the BMW i4 a degree of design coherence its rivals cannot match.

BMW Group’s technological expertise and long experience in the development of extremely sporty premium cars imbue the BMW i4 with dynamic driving abilities extending far beyond the rapid straight-line acceleration typical of a powerful electric car.

The result is effortless progress, even in challenging driving conditions, as well as precisely controllable handling.

Model-specific chassis technology and electric all-wheel drive deliver dynamic thrills

The standard chassis technology of the BMW i4 comprises a double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle with bespoke tuning, lift-related dampers, electromechanical Servotronic steering, an integrated braking system and rear air suspension.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation optimises traction and directional stability in all road and weather conditions. This extremely fast-acting and precise system is fitted as standard on the BMW i4 and teams up with electric all-wheel-drive for the first time.

This combination gives the BMW i4 M50 exceptional dynamic poise during bursts of speed and under intense lateral acceleration. The drive torque control for both motors reacts notably faster and with far greater accuracy than would be possible with a transfer case positioned between the axles.

The BMW i4 M50 is also equipped with adaptive M suspension that incorporates bespoke tuning, variable sport steering, M Sport brakes and up to 20-inch M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres.

Highly integrated and efficient drive system technology

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology in the BMW i4 comprises drive units which bring together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single housing.

This highly integrated electric drive system topology gives a power density of up to 2.14 kW/kg and an exceptionally high efficiency factor. 

The motors work according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor. The excitation of the rotor in the BMW i4 motors is not induced by fixed permanent magnets but rather the precisely controlled feed-in of electric energy.

The performance characteristics of the motors are defined by their considerable torque. This is available on tap from pull-away and sustained over an extremely wide rev band.

Demanding a large amount of power for more than 10 seconds in the BMW i4 M50 triggers Sport Boost, which unfurls not only the drive system’s maximum output but also maximum system torque of 795Nm.

This enables the BMW M model to sprint from 0-100 km/h in a blistering 3.9 seconds.

The drive system in the BMW i4 eDrive40 generates peak torque of 430Nm, providing it a 0-100 km/h time of just 5.7 seconds.

The sporty driving experience is accompanied by a model-specific drive sound delivering authentic feedback to movements of the accelerator. This gives the BMW i4 M50 an energy-charged soundtrack.

The optional BMW IconicSounds Electric enables integration of new sound variants created as part of BMW’s collaboration with legendary film and music composer Hans Zimmer.

Adaptive and individually adjustable recuperation

Adaptive recuperation gives the efficiency and range of the BMW i4 an additional boost.

Intelligently connected drive management means the intensity of the brake energy recuperation can be adapted to the road situation, as detected by data from the navigation system and the sensors used by the driver assistance systems.

For example, when approaching a junction, recuperation power can be increased and energy fed into the high-voltage battery while harnessing the deceleration effect.

On the open road, meanwhile, the i4 can freewheel with no drive power when the driver eases off the accelerator.

Alternatively, in driving position D, a high, medium or low Brake Energy Regeneration setting for all driving situations can be selected in the BMW iDrive menu.

In driving position B, a high level of recuperation is activated automatically, generating the distinctive one-pedal feeling. Maximum recuperation power is 116kW in the BMW i4 eDrive40 and 195kW in the BMW i4 M50.

High-voltage battery with the latest battery cell technology

Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprises a high-voltage battery with the latest battery cell technology.

The gravimetric energy density of the lithium-ion battery has been increased by around 20 per cent once more in comparison with the battery in the current BMW i3. The gross energy content of the high-voltage battery is 83.9kWh.

An integrated heating and cooling system for the interior, the high-voltage battery and the drive system – which operates using an exceptionally efficient heat pump function – comes as standard in the BMW i4.

Anticipatory thermal management allows the operating temperature of the high-voltage battery to be optimised ahead of a stop at a fast-charging station, paving the way for rapid and efficient charging.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) of the BMW i4 has been designed to enable extremely flexible battery charging. DC charging is possible at up to 200kW.

For example, in a short mid-journey stop at a high-power charging station, the car’s range can be increased by as much as 164 kilometres (BMW i4 eDrive40) and 140 kilometres (BMW i4 M50) within 10 minutes from a 10 per cent charge level.

Design: the visual expression of dynamism, elegance and sustainability

The BMW i4 blends the customary sporting elegance of the BMW brand’s coupés with the comfort of a four-door model and an injection of modern functionality.

The stretched proportions and clear use of forms in its body design send out a message of exclusivity and the dynamic flair for which BMW is renowned.

Additionally, accents in BMW i Blue for the largely blanked-off kidney grille, the battery technology in the floor area of the car and the sporty diffuser elements – which optimise the car’s aerodynamics – highlight their sustainability-friendly credentials.

Short overhangs, slim pillars, doors with frameless windows and a roofline that flows smoothly into the rear underscore a silhouette that befits the BMW coupé mould.

Slim headlights, available as an option with BMW Laserlight, and the striking BMW kidney grille with its discreetly integrated camera in combination with ultrasonic and radar sensors are the defining features of the front end.

The BMW i4 eDrive40 in M Sport specification and the BMW i4 M50 employ their own distinctive design features to underscore their performance-focused character.

An M Carbon exterior package can be ordered as an option, while model-specific M Performance Parts are included in the Genuine BMW Accessory range.

The interior brings a driver-focused cockpit and ambience of premium luxury together with a generously sized, variable-use space.

Acoustic glazing, pre-heating and pre-conditioning come as standard, as do sport seats and a sports steering wheel.

The transmission selector lever, BMW Controller and function keys are positioned on a control panel in the centre console that exudes modern design.

The large tailgate has an automatic opening and closing mechanism as standard. Load compartment capacity ranges between 470 and 1,290 litres.

The BMW i4 offers class-leading individualisation options which accentuate its premium character.

Premiere of the new generation BMW iDrive control/operation system

The new generation of the iDrive display and control/operation system fitted for the first time in the BMW i4 extends the interaction between driver and vehicle into natural dialogue.

It is based on the new BMW Operating System 8 and has been designed with a clear focus on the touchscreen functionality of the BMW Curved Display and

spoken communication with the extensively upgraded BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The BMW Curved Display fully digital screen grouping brings together a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display behind a glass surface angled towards the driver. The digital Intelligent Personal Assistant has gained additional skills and uses a new graphic to communicate with the vehicle’s occupants.

The three-zone automatic climate control system fitted as standard in the BMW i4 uses nanofibre filter technology to purify the air inside the car and is now controlled via a touchscreen display.

Temperature is adjusted using the intelligently coordinated activation of airflow, seat heating and steering wheel heating. Remote Software Upgrades keep the car’s software up to date. The cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps ensures fast and precise route planning which also factors in mid-journey stops to charge the battery. The BMW i4 also offers data transmission using 5G.

Wide variety of driver assistance systems

Forty assistance functions are fitted as standard or available as options to provide safe and comfortable driving and parking. Highlights include Active Cruise Control with automatic Speed Limit Assist, route monitoring and the Steering and Lane Control Assistant.

Front-collision warning, Speed Limit Info, Lane Departure Warning, Park Distance Control and the Reversing Assist Camera are fitted as standard, while Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant, and Parking Assistant Plus including Surround View and Remote 3D View will also be available.

Flexible manufacturing at BMW Group Plant Munich, vehicle and battery cell production using 100 per cent green energy, controlled procurement of raw materials

The BMW i4 is produced as part of a flexible manufacturing set-up at BMW Group Plant Munich on an assembly line shared with models with combustion engines and plug-in hybrid drive systems.

One hundred per cent green energy is used for both vehicle production and the manufacture of battery cells.

The BMW Group procures the cobalt and lithium required for these high-voltage batteries from controlled sources and then delivers it to the battery cell suppliers.

The design principle for the electric motors allows the use of rare earth metals to be avoided in the drive system rotors. A high proportion of secondary raw materials and recycled materials helps to reduce the quantities of resources used in production of the BMW i4.

BMW New Zealand will announce local specification and pricing detail for the all-new i4 ahead of its local market introduction.

The first-ever BMW iX, which showcases new generation technology, connectivity, design language and fully electric driving enjoyment, will arrive in New Zealand later this year.

The New Zealand iX line-up will offer extensive standard specification items including myriad luxury, safety, technology and convenience features. 

The two power systems at the heart of the iX models are highly advanced, responsive and deliver abundant power with a combined output of 240kW in the iX xDrive40 and 385kW in the iX xDrive50. 

The latest battery cell technology results in WLTP-calculated ranges of up to 630 kilometres in the iX xDrive50 and up to 425 kilometres in the iX xDrive40.

Also set to join the iX line-up at a later date is the powerhouse BMW iX M60, which will produce a maximum output in excess of 440 kW^# and deliver an exceptionally sporty all-electric driving experience.

Highly-integrated and efficient drive technology

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology fitted to the BMW iX brings together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single housing.

This highly integrated electric drive system maximises power density and efficiency in a compact package positioned across the front and rear axles.

Both motors in the BMW iX operate according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor, where the excitation of the rotor is induced by the feed-in of electrical energy rather than fixed permanent magnets.

This enables maximum torque on tap immediately upon pulling away, as well as a tall, broad and flat torque band. Combined torque peaks at 630Nm on the BMW iX xDrive40 and a towering 765Nm on the BMW iX xDrive50.

Electric all-wheel-drive and near-actuator wheel slip limitation

The electric all-wheel-drive system in the BMW iX transmits exactly the right amount of drive torque to the front and rear wheels in all driving situations.

Its intelligent drive control enables fully variable power transmission, ranging from highly efficient pure rear-wheel-drive to traction-maximising all-wheel-drive.

The near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology fitted in tandem with all-wheel-drive for the first time brings about a further improvement in traction and handling stability.

This system, which is integrated in the motor management, produces precise and lightning fast corrective inputs. The result is effortless progress at all times even in adverse weather and road conditions.

The xDrive50 posts impressive acceleration times with 0 to 100km/h achieved in just 4.6 seconds, while the xDrive40 hits 100km/h from rest in 6.1 seconds.

High-voltage battery with the latest battery cell technology

The BMW iX features fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology with state-of-the-art high voltage battery cell technology.

Volumetric energy density at cell level is up by around 40 per cent compared with the high-voltage battery in the 2020 BMW i3.

The BMW iX xDrive50 is fitted with a high-voltage battery with a net energy content of 105.2 kWh (gross energy content: 111.5 kWh), while the battery unit for the BMW iX xDrive40 has a net energy content of 71 kWh (gross energy content: 76.6 kWh).

The standard specification of the BMW iX includes an integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin, together with its high-voltage battery and a drive system that operates using an exceptionally efficient heat pump function.

Anticipatory thermal management enables the high-voltage battery’s operating temperature to be optimised for quick and efficient charging prior to a scheduled stop at a fast-charging station.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in the BMW iX offers supremely flexible charging options in both AC and DC formats. 

DC power can be taken on board at a rate of up to 200kW (iX xDrive50) or 150kW (iX xDrive40). This allows the battery’s state of charge to be increased from 10 to 80 per cent in just 35 minutes in the BMW iX xDrive50 or 31 minutes in the iX xDrive40.

Range can be increased by up to 150 kilometres on the iX xDrive50 and more than 95 kilometres for the iX xDrive40 in just 10 minutes when they are plugged into a DC fast-charging station with an initial battery charge of 10 per cent.

Adaptive and individually regulated recuperation

Adaptive recuperation gives a further boost to the efficiency and range of the BMW iX.

Intelligently connected drive management means the intensity of the brake energy recuperation during overrun and active braking can be specifically adapted to different road situations, as detected by data from the navigation system and the sensors used by the driver assistance systems.

When approaching a junction, for example, the degree of recuperation is automatically increased, maximising energy recuperation while simultaneously harnessing the deceleration effect to a standstill.

On the open road, coasting functions can take over, allowing the car to free wheel with no drive power whenever the driver eases off the accelerator.

Adaptive recuperation is the default setting in driving position D. Alternatively, the driver can choose a high, medium or low Brake Energy Regeneration setting for all driving situations via the BMW iDrive menu.

The highest recuperation setting is automatically activated in driving position B, which also produces the characteristic one-pedal feeling.

Information on the energy flow can be further viewed in the control display of the BMW iX no matter which driving position is selected. An integrated ‘Efficiency Trainer’ offers hints for driving in a very economical manner, while the range horizon clearly illustrates the impact of driving style on the high-voltage battery’s charge level.

Optimally balanced driving characteristics

The body structure, design principle and chassis tuning of the BMW iX are perfectly calibrated to blend superb ride comfort with sporty handling characteristics.

The iX features aluminium spaceframe construction and carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the roof, sides and rear of its ‘Carbon Cage’, resulting in an intelligent material mix that increases rigidity at the same time as minimising weight.

Optimised aerodynamic properties contribute to the car’s low drag coefficient of just 0.25, maximising efficiency and range.

The high-voltage battery is located low down in the car’s underbody, contributing to agile and responsive handling. 

The standard chassis technology for the BMW iX comprises a double-wishbone front axle, five-link rear axle, lift-related dampers and an electric steering system with Servotronic function and a variable ratio.

These features combine to create well-balanced driving characteristics that enable the BMW iX to feel solid and comfortable but also agile when the need arises.

Twenty one inch aerodynamically-optimised wheels are standard from the entry point of the line-up, while 22-inch wheels are fitted to both Sport variants. Other wheel designs with contrasting finishes are also available in both wheel sizes. 

Premiere of new generation BMW iDrive and operating software

The BMW iX also sees debut of the latest generation of iDrive, based on BMW Operating System 8.

The new Operating System makes the most of the new BMW Curved Display and verbal communication with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which has also undergone an extensive upgrade.

New ‘My Modes’ personalisation options expand the range of vehicle settings that can be selected, thereby creating an all-encompassing personal driving experience.

Remote Software Upgrades and the option of purchasing vehicle functions from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store via Functions on Demand keep vehicle functions always up to date.

Navigation using the cloud-based system BMW Maps and Augmented Reality Video in the control display ensures quick and accurate route planning while also making it easy for the driver to find their way on the road.

5G onboard mobile technology for data transmission and the ability to integrate a personal mobile account into the car using the personal eSIM reinforce the pioneering status of the BMW iX.

Wide variety of driver assistance systems

The new technology toolkit in the BMW iX offers considerable potential for the development of automated driving and parking functions, with the prospect of Level 3 functionality in the medium term.

A new generation of sensors, a new software stack and a powerful computing platform provide the basis for exceptional intelligence. Five cameras, five radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors are used to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings.

The BMW iX comes equipped with the most extensive set of standard driver assistance systems ever seen on a BMW. The front collision warning system, for instance, now detects oncoming traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians when turning.

Steering and Lane Control Assistant features have been significantly expanded, while Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function offers enhanced situational distance adjustment.

The exit warning function, which alerts to the presence of cyclists or pedestrians in the surrounding area before the doors are opened, and the Remote Theft Recorder, are both new features.

Also on the standard equipment list is Parking Assistant including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant.

Exterior design exudes progressive luxury; spacious interior provides premium, feel-good ambience

The pioneering character of the BMW iX clearly shines through in its exterior design.

The reduced design language and precisely crafted details melds with the body’s muscular Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) proportions and imposing presence to create an aura of progressive luxury.

Standout exterior features include the almost completely blanked-off BMW kidney grille, whose surface is the product of innovative manufacturing techniques and which incorporates camera and radar sensors.

The BMW iX has been rigorously designed from the inside out with a focus on improving quality of life and personal wellbeing in mind.

Vast amounts of room and newly developed seats with integral head restraints set the tone for the luxurious ambience. The absence of a centre tunnel creates extra legroom and sufficient space for storage facilities and a centre console designed in the style of a high quality piece of furniture.

Feeler bars in the control panel, active haptic input buttons and a rocker switch for gear selection add futuristic instrumental flourishes.

In addition to the BMW Curved Display, the iX’s hexagonal steering wheel and frameless projector integration for the optional Head‑Up Display further add to the futuristic interior and focused driving experience.

Two available interior design themes, Loft and Suite, each offer their own unique character and ambience while three different trim choices – Stone Grey, Amido and Castanea – are available to further customise the cabin’s look and feel.

Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing using purely green power, monitored raw materials extraction, high proportion of natural and recycled materials

The BMW iX will be produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing.

Both the vehicle itself and the battery cells will be manufactured using green power across the board. The BMW Group procures the cobalt and lithium required for the high-voltage batteries from controlled sources in Australia and Morocco and delivers it to the battery cell manufacturers.

The design principle for the electric motors allows the use of rare earth metals to be avoided in the drive system rotors. Added to which, the company sources aluminium produced using power from solar energy plants.

A high proportion of secondary aluminium and reused plastic also contribute to the resource-efficient production of the BMW iX. Its interior uses FSC-certified wood, leather tanned with olive leaf extracts and other natural materials. Recycled fishing nets are among the raw materials used for the floor coverings and mats.

BMW IconicSounds Electric brings an unmistakable sound portfolio to BMW models powered by a fully electric or plug-in hybrid drive system. The collaboration between composer and curator Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale, Creative Director Sound at the BMW Group, has produced a distinctive driving sound which customers will soon be able to experience in a version developed specially for electric BMW M cars. “Every BMW has its own character, which is reflected in the sound it makes,” says film music creator and Academy Award winner Zimmer. “So for the electrically driven BMW M models we have developed a driving sound which accentuates their emotional driving experience particularly vividly and ensures their performance can be felt with even greater intensity.”

Hans Zimmer had previously been involved in the development of an inspiring ready-to-drive sound for electrically powered BMWs which instils a sense of excitement at the prospect of electric driving when the Start/Stop button is pressed. The latest chapter in this collaboration covers drive sounds for the BMW iX and BMW i4, including a differentiated sound for the M-specification version of the BMW i4.

While the hush of electric driving offers an unprecedented level of comfort, the driving experience loses a degree of emotionality. This is where BMW IconicSounds Electric steps in to put smiles on the faces of customers keen to experience Sheer Driving Pleasure with all the senses. In the future, electric driving pleasure will be enhanced by acoustic feedback to every movement of the accelerator. Like the on-board driving modes selectable at the touch of a button, the driving sound also takes its cues from the driving situation at hand and the driver’s personal preferences. In the basic setting, BMW IconicSounds Electric employs a strikingly transparent timbre with spherical components to convey the basic character of an electrically driven BMW brand model. An immersive and pleasant atmosphere is created initially in the BMW i4 in COMFORT mode. But when the driver steps on the accelerator, the direct relationship between how the car is being driven and the sounds it makes is immediately revealed: the sound experience deepens as load and speed increase. In SPORT mode, in particular, the car’s aural spectrum is more dominant and powerful, the sound providing a constant commentary on the driving situation. Drive system processes are registered within milliseconds and acceleration, load changes or recuperation given a suitable acoustic accompaniment. It makes the heart of the BMW brand now beat fully electric,” said Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales.

The BMW i4 is a fully electric 4 door Gran Coupé and will enter the market during the course of 2021, including a BMW M Performance model. Its refined balance of BMW typical sportiness, comfort and sustainable performance are unique in its segment.

The BMW i4 model line will be available in different versions covering ranges of up to 590km (WLTP) and up to 300 miles* (EPA). With a power output of up to 390kW / 530HP the BMW i4 can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in around 4 seconds.

Munich. The BMW Group is opening a new chapter in its history with the unveiling of a pure-electric Gran Coupe. The BMW Concept i4 takes electric drive to the core of the BMW brand and heralds a new era in Sheer Driving Pleasure. The BMW Concept i4 represents a look ahead to the BMW i4, slated to enter production in 2021. It provides a whole new take on the dynamic excellence for which BMW is renowned and blends a modern, elegantly sporty design with the spaciousness and functionality of a four-door Gran Coupe – all while generating zero local emissions.

“The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW brand,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The design is dynamic, clean and elegant. In short: a perfect BMW that happens to be zero emission.” The drivetrain’s standout numbers include a range of up to 600 km (WLTP), output of up to 530 hp, 0 – 100 km/h (0 – 60 mph) acceleration of approximately 4.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph). However, the driving qualities of the BMW Concept i4 cannot be expressed in figures alone. The virtually silent delivery of power creates an entirely new sensation of dynamism.

“The design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a powerfully expressive character and, of course, a lot of attention to detail,” adds Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. “With the BMW Curved Display, we have redefined BMW’s signature driver focus in an extremely elegant way. At the same time, the BMW Concept i4 transports a feeling of sustainable driving pleasure.” As part of the package, the Concept i4 includes several exterior and interior design elements which will make an appearance in both the BMW i4 and other electrically-powered production vehicles.

The exterior – electrifying aesthetics.

The modern, elegant exterior represents a deliberate counterpoint to the dynamic flair of the driving experience. The perfectly resolved Gran Coupe proportions create an authentic, modern and confident appearance. The long wheelbase, fastback roofline and short overhangs form a basic profile brimming with elegance and dynamism. With its four doors, the BMW Concept i4 offers not only a high level of everyday usability and practicality, but also a much larger interior than the car’s modern and dynamic proportions would immediately suggest.

Clear surfaces and aerodynamic details.

Crisp, smooth lines and taut volumes merge into a rich, smoothly contoured sculpture and create a clear surfacing language. The modern exterior paint shade Frozen Light Copper reprises a colour nuance displayed by the BMW Vision iNEXT and showcases the interplay of surfaces to visually stunning effect. Blue elements in the front end, flanks and rear end point to the car’s BMW i origins. They shine a spotlight on the signature BMW i icons and bring the technology below the surface to the fore – for example, the kidneys in their role as an intelligence panel, the mouldings in the side skirts concealing the battery technology, and the diffuser elements in the rear end, which fill the design space vacated by exhaust tailpipes and enhance aerodynamic efficiency.

A host of other aerodynamic measures maximise the car’s electric range. The blanked off kidney grille and clear aero lips provide detail examples of sophisticated airflow engineering at work. Another distinctive area of the car are the wheel rims. These have been designed exclusively for the BMW Concept i4 and blend aerodynamic and lightweight design; smooth – and therefore aerodynamically optimised – surfaces contrast with ultra-low-weight, high-strength spokes. The rims extend the car’s palette of colours and materials, emphasising its luxurious overall character.

The front end – the eye-catching face of a new era.

The front-end treatment of the BMW Concept i4 presents the familiar BMW icons in a new look, lending a visually powerful face to the electric age at BMW. The prominent, closed-off kidney grille provides a tangible connection between the past and future of BMW. The BMW icon also gains new functionality: With no combustion engine to require cooling, the grille now serves primarily as an “intelligence panel” housing various sensors. The grille teases the technology behind the scenes with a special design for this model. The headlights likewise provide a bridge between the past and the future; the classical four-eyed front end is reprised here with a very modern and pared-back interpretation. Two intricate, freestanding LED elements on either side integrate all of the requisite light functions. Clean surfaces and a small number of crisp lines around the grille create a contemporary front-end graphic with considerable visual impact. A BMW i-style blue accent in the grille surround sets the seal on the front-end styling.

Taking the first steps with the new BMW brand identity.

In the course of the BMW Concept i4 presentation BMW is unveiling the brand’s new look for the first time. The new logo for communications also provides the basis for the badge on the BMW Concept i4. Its two-dimensional and transparent design ensures seamless integration and brings the special exterior colour shade Frozen Light Copper to even greater prominence. The concept car not only has the task of looking ahead to the future in terms of aesthetics, technology and innovation, it also explores the design potential within our BMW trademark.

Striking rear end with aerodynamic features.

The rear of the BMW Concept i4 sits low over the road and cuts a broad, horizontally emphasised figure. The surfaces progress across the rear in a smooth and luxuriant movement, and give it a very modern and calm appearance. The long, slim L-shaped rear lights continue the theme. Below the rear lights, the inward-angled surfaces form aerodynamics-enhancing lips and incorporate vertical air outlets. The verticality of the design here emphasises the car’s sporting stance. Further down, the rear apron has a forceful presence and enhances aerodynamic efficiency. Where exhaust tailpipes would once have been found, diffuser elements in BMW i Blue indicate the presence of a pure-electric drive system and reference the design of the BMW i Vision Dynamics.

The interior – innovation meets minimalism.

The interior of the BMW Concept i4 focuses on those times when the driver chooses to pilot the car themselves. To this end, every element in the front of the cabin is trained on the driver. The new BMW Curved Display teams up with the steering wheel to reveal a new take on driver orientation and offers a look ahead to the display in the production versions of the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. Here, the presentation surfaces of the information display and Control Display merge into a single unit inclined towards the driver. This screen grouping optimises presentation of information and makes the display’s touch operation more intuitive. Advanced display tech with non-reflective glass also removes the need for a shroud to shade the displays and therefore contributes to an extremely uncluttered and airy cockpit.

The BMW Curved Display encompasses a large proportion of the section in front of the driver and above the centre stack, and gives the front area a very modern appearance. Its slim, borderless form exudes quality and sophistication. Almost all operating functions are integrated into the display as part of an overall approach centred on reducing the number of haptic controls to the minimum. Even the climate control system now works by touch control.

Focus on the essential.

The front section of the interior around the BMW Curved Display also majors on pared-back design. The understated use of different materials and the fundamental arrangement of controls creates a modern yet also luxurious ambience. With this in mind, elements such as air outlets are integrated almost invisibly into the overall geometry and concealed behind strong patterns.

Accent strips in warm Gold Bronze blending to chrome lend the interior a high-class touch. The central control panel replaces a traditional gear lever with a toggle-type shifter. Elements such as the iDrive Controller and seat memory buttons in the doors are finished in a classy crystal glass. The cloth/leather combination for the seats – composed of microfibre with line graphics and natural leather tanned using olive leaf – sets a high-quality and sustainable seal on the interior. The overall result is a clearly structured, bright and airy cabin which brings across the tranquillity and authority of electric drive systems.

Spacious rear compartment.

Rear-seat passengers are greeted by a generously-sized compartment offering levels of headroom and legroom that exceed expectations of a coupe. Integral head restraints for the front and rear seats add further to the sporting feel. The cut-out in the head restraints is a classy detail that references sporty BMW models from the current line-up.

The rear seats extend the horizontal graphic emerging from the doors to create a lounge feel in the rear. Meanwhile, the outer seats reprise the dynamic form of the front seats, heightening the sporting flavour. They also use very little stitching, which further emphasises the clean and modern feel.

Further developed user interface design with Experience Modes.

The screen grouping with new BMW Curved Display provides a digital gateway into the electric age at BMW. Look and feel are clearly influenced by the latest electronic devices and have been made deliberately less “automotive” in nature. In the display itself, flat layers provide considerable visual depth. Overall, the BMW Curved Display and new presentation approach combine to provide a first-class content-viewing experience.

Three different Experience Modes enable users to explore the various facets of the electric drive system and provide a look ahead – in terms of visuals at least – to the next-generation operating system from 2021. The sometimes emphasised visual differentiation between the three Experience Modes (“Core”, “Sport” and “Efficient”) spans everything from how the user experiences the display and graphics to how the interior is presented. Ambient lighting in the dashboard, doors and (indirectly) below the display indicate the technical adjustments taking place.

“Core” mode introduces the driver’s area to an updated interpretation of the four “widgets” familiar from the display concept of existing models. Here, the graphics reprise the pattern above the air vents and the Gold Bronze accent colour, consciously referencing the car’s interior design. In the area where the central display used to be positioned, a map and widgets now line up alongside one another. The user can navigate around the diagonal widgets using a swipe movement and arrange them intuitively by drag-and-drop. This allows them to adapt the display to their personal preferences.

In “Sport” mode, the “widgets” come closer together and create a focussed view. Sideways movements behind the zones are used to show how tight the next corner is, facilitating anticipatory driving. This form of content presentation also allows effective peripheral viewing. The right-hand area of the display shows specific functions in a similar way to BMW M’s lap timer app.

“Efficient” mode debuts an “Assisted Driving View”, which shows the driver what the car’s sensors are detecting. This Experience Mode opens up deeper insights into the car’s technology, such as how it communicates with its surroundings. In the BMW Concept i4, the focus here is on anticipatory and efficient driving, and key information for efficient driving is incorporated. The right-hand area of the display shows additional vehicle information, such as the charge level and range.

The sound of the BMW Concept i4.

The BMW Concept i4 is not only characterised by its individual design, but also by its own visionary and unique sound. It was developed under the brand name of BMW IconicSounds Electric by world renowned composer Hans Zimmer together with BMW Sound Designer Renzo Vitale. BMW IconicSounds Electric aims to emotionalise BMW's electric vehicles and make them audible using individual sound worlds. The sound of the BMW Concept i4 achieves this to perfection – it combines BMW’s past and future. It gives the driver the feeling that there are no limits of expression. The sound is manifold, surprising and it provides a sense of lightness and transparency. The sound worlds of the BMW Concept i4 range from the driving sounds in "Core" mode to the more intense and pronounced sounds of "Sport" mode. Also included are the sounds of the door opening and the starting scenario.

The technology as earmarked for the upcoming BMW i4.

Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is a defining feature of the BMW i4 and therefore also of future electric mobility. The BMW iX3 due to go into production in 2020 will lead the way in the application of the new tech, which will be introduced in a number of electrically powered BMW vehicles – such as the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. The electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology are all-new developments enabling the BMW Group to take another significant step forward in the field of electrified drive systems. The electric motor developed for the BMW i4 generates maximum output of up to 390 kW/530 hp, which ranks it alongside a current BMW V8 combustion engine. Its instantaneous power delivery gives the BMW i4 standout performance attributes and exceptional efficiency.

The fifth generation of BMW eDrive also brings a newly designed high-voltage battery with the very latest battery cell technology. The version of the battery developed for the BMW i4 impresses with its extremely slim construction and optimised energy density. It weighs roughly 550 kilograms, has an energy content of around 80 kWh and achieves an operating range of up to 600 km in the WLTP cycle.

All in all, fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology sets new standards in terms of power density, efficiency and range in locally emission-free driving.

Series production of the new BMW i4.

Series production of the new BMW i4 will begin in 2021 at the BMW Group’s main plant in Munich. This means that, in the future, combustion-engined vehicles, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles will be manufactured on the same assembly line in Munich.

Integrating the BMW i4 into the existing production system represents a challenging task for Plant Munich. The body concept of the BMW i4 differs from the architectures of the vehicle models produced at the plant to date due to the need to accommodate its high-voltage battery. Approximately 90 per cent of the existing production equipment in the body shop can be incorporated into the process, i.e. adapted to manufacture of the i4. However, the remaining ten per cent – especially the machinery involved in building the rear structure – will need to be newly built.

A separate new piece of equipment will be fitted in the assembly halls for installation of the high-voltage battery, as the battery needs to be fitted in the car from below. A particular challenge in the conversion/installation process are the crowded structures of the assembly halls. Working within these tight confines, old machinery will have to be removed and new equipment installed and brought on stream within a six-week period. This requires long-term planning and precise implementation.

The company is investing a total of around 200 million euros in Plant Munich to bring series production of the BMW i4 to fruition.
