favor of SUVs, they found themselves missing the third row of seating
that made minivans so ideal as family or team transportation. That was
true whether the SUV in question was a Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee,
or, after 1999, a BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (E53).

When BMW’s product planners, designers, and engineers began working
on the second-generation (E70) X5, they knew it would need more
seating to remain competitive. “When we did the E70, we struggled to
get a third row of seating in it,” said Rich Brekus, then Head of
Product Planning and Strategy for BMW of North America. “Albert
Biermann [project leader] did a phenomenal job, but it became obvious
that a third row in the E70 wasn’t going to work very well.”

Introduced in 2006, the E70 featured dimensions that had remained
more or less unchanged from those of the first-generation E53 X5—the
wheelbase had increased by just 4.5 inches, the overall length by 7.4
inches. BMW had added a third row of seating, but the space was too
cramped for all but the smallest adults; even children had to fold
themselves up to sit there, and the space received little light or ventilation.

“It was clear there was a market for a bigger X5, and we started
asking for an X5L, like a $3,000 upgrade,” Brekus said. “Munich
suggested an X7, but I said these families needed a third row of
seating, not an X7.”

Munich preferred a larger, more upscale vehicle, and so did BMW’s
U.S. dealers. “The dealers are always asking for a vehicle above the
X5,” said Ludwig Willisch shortly after he arrived in Woodcliff Lake
as BMW NA CEO in October 2011. “Not a single day goes by that I don’t
get a phone call asking when the new X7 will be available.”

Indeed, the lack of proper three-row SAV meant that BMW was losing
customers not only to its traditional German rivals but to domestic
automakers whose large SUVs were designed expressly for active
families and could seat six or seven passengers comfortably. “A
consumer who preferred European cars would never consider an American
car if he or she wanted a BMW, a Porsche, or a Mercedes, but that
isn’t true when it comes to SUVs,” Willisch said. “And if you weren’t
ready to deliver, you’d lose out.”

In December 2011, Willisch made his case for an X7 to the BMW board.
“I stated how well others were selling in that bracket, and we
weren't, because we didn't have a product. And so the chairman [Dr.
Norbert Reithofer] said, ‘Ludwig, you have a point, and I will fight
with you for that product. It's going to happen.’”

The X7 took a major step closer to reality in late 2014, when BMW
announced a $1 billion expansion of its Spartanburg plant. At the
time, Spartanburg was BMW’s only factory assembling large SAVs, and it
was running flat-out to meet global demand for X5s and X3s. The
expansion would allow BMW’s “center of competence” for Sports Activity
Vehicles to assemble a new model identified as the X7, for which BMW
NA announced a rather optimistic on-sale date of February 2017.

The X7 project had been initiated thanks to U.S. demand, and BMW NA
would play a key role in its development. In 2009, Brekus had been
replaced as Head of Product Planning by Paul Ferraiolo; in December
2014, Ferraiolo tapped Kate Alini to manage U.S.-market development of
a new series of luxury models: the increasingly upscale 7 Series sedan
as well as the new 8 Series and X7. Where the X7 was concerned, Alini
was a perfect fit for the vehicle’s intended demographic.

“I was driving an E70 X5, and I had three young kids that I had to
drop off at school every day,” Alini said. “In the US, you have to get
in and out of the drop-off zone really quickly, and I was holding up
the line because it took so long to wrestle my kids out of their car
seats, especially the one all the way in the back. They made me pull
over into the bus zone.”

Since the school drop-off—not to mention large SUVs— is virtually
unknown in Europe, Alini sent videos of the scene to her colleagues in
Munich, to convince them of the need not only for more spacious
third-row seating but for easier ingress and egress throughout the
vehicle. In that, the domestic SUVs had an inherent advantage, since
they shared their chassis with full-size pickup trucks. The E70 X5’s
unit-construction chassis was much smaller, and so was the F15 X5
introduced in 2013.

BMW had tried to build an X7 atop the X5 chassis, but it simply
didn’t work. “They tried to work with the existing [F15] X5, but the
wheelhouses were too small,” Willisch said. “With the size of the car,
the small wheels looked awful. Aesthetically, it had to wait for the
next platform.”

That platform was the unit-construction Cluster Architecture (CLAR)
platform that debuted with BMW’s G11 7 Series sedan in 2015, and which
would provide the foundation for subsequent large BMWs, including the
fourth-generation G05 X5 that debuted in 2018. CLAR gave BMW more
flexibility where size and configuration were concerned, and it would
allow the company to finally build an X7 with fully-accessible
third-row seating. It would be BMW’s largest SAV to date, but it would
still be fairly compact compared to full-size SUVs from other manufacturers.

“The X7 is quite a bit narrower than a Mercedes G-class, for example,
not to mention the Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalade,” said Rich
Steinberg, who succeeded Ferraiolo as Head of Product Planning in
2015. “Those cars offered a fair amount of room to get to the third
row, so we had a lot of discussion about how to maximize the interior
layout to allow access to the third row of seats.”

Even as it approached those vehicles in size, it needed to retain
BMW’s signature performance, particularly where handling was
concerned. “It had to be a BMW,” Steinberg said. “We were losing
customers who like driving BMWs but needed more space, and who were
switching to other marques to get it. It was important that the X7
keep the BMW DNA intact, that it have the sporting driving experience
that’s typical of any BMW.”

As its nomenclature indicated, the X7 would be positioned upscale
compared to the rough-and-ready X5. “We were switching the 6 Series
Coupe to the 8 Series, and the idea was to command a higher premium
[price] based on higher levels of premium features,” Steinberg said.

“In terms of the overall concept, the X7 wasn’t just a bigger X5.
It’s a luxury vehicle, and it’s got to have presence,” Alini said.
“The kidney grille on the X7 concept vehicle was enormous, and when I
first saw the car in Munich I was like, ‘Whoa! That’s a lot of
chrome!’ They decreased the size of the grille slightly for
production, but the verticality of the kidney combined with the
horizontal headlights was very modern, very contemporary. It gave the
X7 real presence.”

The X7’s kidney grille was the largest ever designed for a BMW, and
it was flanked by slim headlights that emphasized the car’s width in
relation to its height. BMW’s press release highlighted its
“harmonious proportions,” as well as “a new use of forms dominated by
clearly structured surfaces and precise lines [that] lend the X7 its
modern aura.” Those surfaces and lines had a slimming effect, making
the X7 appear both neater and lighter than its X5 stablemate, even
though it was slightly larger; so did BMW’s first-ever 22-inch wheels,
which rectified the aesthetic problems that Willisch had identified
years earlier.

Following a long gestation period, the X7 was revealed to the public
as the “Concept X7 iPerformance” at the Frankfurt auto show in
September 2017.

Along with the CLAR platform, the X7 concept shared much of the 7
Series’ design language, including the sedan’s large,
vertically-oriented kidney grille.

In accordance with its original mission, the X7 could accommodate
seven full-sized adults, or six if the customer chose to replace the
standard second-row bench seating with a pair of optional captain’s
chairs. That idea came from Alini, who’d seen them on her friends’
domestic SUVs.

“They were the coolest things, because the kids could just jump right
through to the third row,” Alini said. “I had to convince Munich to
make them optional, which I did by showing them how kids got to the
third row in an X5: They climb over the seats, and their sneakers
scratch up the headliner.”

Since the U.S. would represent more than half the worldwide market
for X7s, Alini’s opinions carried plenty of weight at the FIZ, the
engineering and design center in Munich where the car was being
developed. So did those of her Chinese counterpart, who also
represented a substantial market for this luxury SAV.

“I wanted captain’s chairs with a pass-through, and they wanted
captain’s chairs with huge bolsters and a giant console in the middle,
because they’re always being chauffeured,” she said. “They didn’t care
about the third row, but we needed it, and we needed the ability to
get back there. The car’s only so wide, so how do we make it so that a
human can get through? I remember being in the seating buck, and our
counterparts from other countries just didn’t get it.”

Alini got the captain’s chairs—“It was a compromise, but it
works!”—and she also ensured that the X7 was well equipped with
another feature essential to American customers: cupholders. “We need
a cupholder for every passenger in the U.S.,” she said. “But when you
have the captain’s chairs, you lose two cupholders. You can put a
bottle in the door pocket, but you can’t put a coffee or a fountain
soda in there. Munich wanted to put the cupholders on the floor
between the captain’s chairs, but that was a tripping hazard on the
way to the third row. I was fighting for everything I could to make
life as easy as possible.”

Alini’s advocacy was backed up by CEO Willisch, who accompanied her
to Munich to check on the X7’s progress. “He was super-supportive,”
she said. “He really got it, and the fact that he would go to the FIZ
and check out a seating buck, knowing that I’m fighting for cupholders
and pass-throughs… I don’t know if CEOs normally get involved with
those kinds of things, but Willisch was super-involved.”

The X7 would never be as wide as its American counterparts, but
access to the second- and third-row seating was improved by making the
X7’s rear doors longer than those up front. In addition, all of the
X7’s seats were electrically adjustable fore and aft as well as for
seat-back angle, and they could even be adjusted from the driver’s
seat or from the cargo area via redundant controls.
In addition
to ensuring the X7’s passengers easy access and comfortable seating,
Alini also had to make sure the X7 could accommodate their stuff,
whether that was sports equipment, groceries, or luggage for a long
trip. “Munich wanted to get rid of the split tailgate we had on the
X5, but I said we cannot lose that,” she said. “It wasn’t just a
market differentiator (at the time, only Range Rover offered a split
tailgate). It was also highly functional. If we’re going to have a
smaller trunk than our competitors we better make it more accessible
and easy to use.” The X7 got its split tailgate, an electric one that
could be opened or closed at the touch of a button.

Along with new exterior design language, the X7 was part of an
interior design revolution that brought more light into the interior.
According to the press release, the X7’s “large windows and a long,
flowing roofline” created “a spacious interior bathed in light.” A
panoramic sunroof was standard, along with electrically controlled
headliner shades that could be deployed from any seating position.
That included the third row, where an additional overhead glass panel
let in natural light, and where a new five-zone climate control system
could moderate temperatures. “That was another thing that other
markets didn’t care about,” Alini said, “but a lot of Americans put
pets in the back of the car as well as people, and they need AC back
there. So, the third row has natural light, its own AC, and its own
cupholders, and that changes the whole experience. You’re not sitting
in the trunk anymore, but in the third row of a beautiful and
comfortable vehicle.”

Beyond new functionality, the X7 interior brought an unprecedented
degree of luxury to BMW’s SAV lineup, with elegant touches like
ambient lighting, aromatherapy, and cut crystal for some of the
control knobs and the gear shift. “I remember thinking it seemed a bit
over the top at the time, but then I saw it, and it really did elevate
the interior,” Alini said. “We still aimed to be the sportiest, most
dynamic vehicle in the segment, and adding those elements didn’t
compromise drivability in any way. It was still a BMW—just a more
elevated expression of it.

In 2018, prospective customers finally had the opportunity to preview
the X7 in some 125 “closed room” events around the U.S.. “We created a
lot of excitement around the vehicle, and when pre-orders started we
got several hundred in the first 24 hours,” Alini said.

The X7 was the first vehicle that customers could pre-order online
through the BMW USA website before taking delivery at their local
dealer. Once their vehicles arrived, customers were treated to a
suitably luxurious level of service, one that surpassed the premium
experience for which BMW was already known. “We were just getting into
the luxury space—we were launching ten new models in the luxury
segment, all larger cars at a higher price point—and we wanted to
elevate the whole experience so that it reflected the nuances of
luxury, not premium,” Alini said. “We developed a program that allowed
dealers to offer conveniences like vehicle pick-up and drop-off,
expedited service appointment scheduling, and other time-saving benefits.

X7 assembly began at Spartanburg in December 2018, and all of those
customer-service details had been worked out by the time BMW’s new
luxury SAV went on sale in the US in March 2019. Two models were
offered initially: the six-cylinder X7 xDrive40i and the V8-powered X7
xDrive50i, priced at $73,900 and $92,600, respectively. An eight-speed
Steptronic automatic transmission was standard in both models, as was
Dynamic Damper Control air suspension. The X7 would be offered only
with all-wheel drive, another element of the X7’s premium positioning,
and limiting the drivetrain options reduced the cost of bringing the
X7 to market. Finally, the X7 was available with BMW’s top-shelf
driver aids and connectivity/infotainment features, and a full slate
of comfort and convenience options.

As a luxury SAV whose final retail price can easily exceed six
figures, the X7 would never be a high-volume vehicle like the smaller
and more affordable X5 or X3. Even so, it’s been a strong performer
throughout its lifecycle.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – April 12, 2022…More presence,
more sportiness, more technology: The new 2023 BMW X7 breaks new
ground for richly assured driving pleasure in the luxury car segment.
The first BMW Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in this vehicle category
offers an inimitable combination of exclusivity, dynamic excellence,
luxuriant spaciousness, and versatility. Indeed, the X7 has quickly
developed into the most successful BMW model in the luxury class. And
now its unique character profile has been honed to significant effect
thanks to extensive design refinements – most notably a visually
impactful front end – plus a new-look M Sport package, light-alloy
wheels measuring up to 23 inches and the latest-generation control
system including BMW Curved Display and BMW iDrive 8. The new BMW X7
also comes with a further expanded range of standard equipment,
additional driver assistance systems and the latest 48V mild hybrid
technology for both engine variants.

The new BMW X7 is a central pillar in the ongoing product offensive
at the most exclusive reaches of the premium carmaker’s model line-up.
The new X7 will be produced at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, the global
competence center for BMW X models where the BMW X6, X5, X4 and X3 are
also built. The market launch for the new BMW X7 will get underway in
the third quarter of 2022, with the ALPINA XB7 following in early 2023.

Modern front-end design adopts the new language of BMW’s flagship models.

Its extensively revised front end ensures the new BMW X7 makes a
potent visual impact and sets it apart clearly from the other BMW X
models. The new structure and design of the front end pick up on
signature BMW design cues such as the twin headlights. In their newly
interpreted form, the headlights emphasize the car’s upright stance
and reinforce its road presence.

For the first time on any BMW, split headlight units have been
employed to provide the daytime driving lights on the one hand and to
illuminate the road ahead on the other. The two LED units mounted high
on either side of the front end shine out of the narrow glass covers
as daytime driving lights. With their crisp contours depicting an
upturned L-shape, they project a chic and technically sophisticated
appearance and further increase the car’s presence. The daytime
driving lights also function as turn signal indicators.

The low-beam and high-beam headlights are generated by two other LED
units in separate modules below the daytime driving lights. Their dark
housing and deep-set position in the front fascia give these modules
the impression of retreating into the background and only coming to
the fore when activated.

The ALPINA XB7 will be further distinguished by the classic ALPINA
front apron to produce a perfectly shaped, powerful appearance.

Newly designed BMW kidney grille with cascade lighting.

The updated front-end design also showcases BMW’s signature kidney
grille to prominent effect. The intricately presented new grille bars
– with their bi-color look and chrome elements – add a flourish of
exclusivity within the grille’s eye-catching surround.

The illuminated BMW kidney grille is optional on X7 xDrive40i and
standard on the X7 M60i. Its understated cascade lighting for the two
grille elements brings a dramatic impression to the front end of the
new BMW X7 when parked or on the move. The illumination is activated
when one of the doors is opened and can be switched on or off manually
by the driver via the iDrive menu.

In conjunction with the new design of the headlights and kidney
grille, the front fascia as a whole displays a thoroughly updated
look. Its generously sized surfaces, the precisely integrated air
curtains, and its finish in body color underscore the exclusive
appearance of the new BMW X7. Another distinctive feature are the
large inlays in satin aluminum which border the lower air intake on
either side. With their outward-facing contour, they accentuate the
powerful stance of the new BMW X7 on the road.

Detailed refinements for the rear end, including three-dimensional lights.

Light units now with three-dimensional sculpting add a striking
accent to the rear of the new BMW X7. Their LED light sources form a
single unit with the glass covers, accentuating the sophisticated
technology of the lights. The L-shaped rear light strips generate
significantly greater light intensity, enabling them to double as
brake lights. The light units can therefore be kept extremely slim.
The turn indicators are housed in the upper sections. The sections of
the rear lights extending into the flanks of the car display a
geometric graphic and BMW lettering. The slim chrome bar connecting
the two light units on the new BMW X7 is enclosed within an exquisite
glass cover.

The XB7 will be instantly identifiable by the four oval tailpipes of
the sport exhaust system, beautifully integrated into the ALPINA rear apron.

New exterior colors.

A total of 14 exterior color shades will be available for the new BMW
X7 from launch, including the new Sparkling Copper Grey metallic
variant. M Marina Bay Blue metallic is available exclusively for the
BMW X7 M60i. Also available are the BMW Individual finishes Ametrin
metallic, Dravit Grey metallic, Tanzanite Blue II metallic and Frozen
Pure Grey metallic.

In addition to this, around 40 BMW Individual colors are available
for the new BMW X7 on special request. These include metallic shades
such as Daytona Violet and Ruby Red, plus non-metallic or matte
finishes. These exclusive paint finishes are applied by hand in a
meticulous process. The spectrum of colors is being expanded all the time.

New M Sport Package provides dynamic looks.

Aerodynamically optimized exterior features and numerous design
elements in a high-gloss black finish set the tone for the appearance
of the BMW X7 xDrive40i with optional M Sport Package. The front and
rear aprons boast an M-specific design, as do the side skirts.
Features of the front apron include a large lower air intake and
high-gloss black trim on the outer edges of the air curtains. The roof
rails, side window surrounds, air breathers and the adjoining trim
strips along the door sills and at the rear are also finished in
high-gloss black. Double-spoke bi-color 21-inch M light-alloy wheels
add further to the dynamic aura. An inlay in Dark Shadow and
trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe finishers are the defining elements of
the rear end’s sporty look.

The list of M-specific features for the interior includes illuminated
door sill plates bearing the M logo, an M leather steering wheel, fine
wood interior trim strips in Fineline Stripe high-gloss brown, an
Anthracite M headliner, stainless-steel M pedals, an M driver’s dead
pedal, and model-specific floor mats. An M logo in the instrument
cluster display and an M-specific vehicle key also part of the M Sport
Package’s content.

X7 M60i: high-performance with high-impact visuals.

M-specific exterior features including large air intakes and
aerodynamically optimized details also help to endow the new
BMW X7 M60i with an extremely striking appearance. Exclusive design
elements are further indicators of the range-topper’s standout
performance. An M logo on a black background adorns the standard
illuminated BMW kidney grille, featuring matte black bars with
high-gloss surfaces. Aerodynamically optimized M exterior mirrors help
to send a clear message of performance.

M Double-spoke bi-color 22-inch light-alloy wheels are fitted as
standard on the new BMW X7 M60i. Moving to the rear, the standout
feature is the exhaust system’s twin tailpipe finishers on the left
and right.

Inside, the M Sport design is supplemented by illuminated door sill
plates with “M60i” lettering, an M leather steering wheel with
stitching in the BMW M colors, interior trim strips in Fineline wood
with high-gloss metal effect, an M-specific ambient lighting bar and
an M headliner in Anthracite Alcantara. This imbues the new
BMW X7 M60i xDrive with a cabin ambience majoring in focused driving pleasure.

Interior trim in Carbon Fiber is available as an option for the new BMW X7 M60i.

New: M Sport Professional package and “BMW M 50 Years” emblems.

The new M Sport Professional Package highlights the sporty streak in
the X7’s character even more emphatically. When fitted as an optional
upgrade for the M Sport Package on X7 xDrive40i, it adds Extended
Shadowline Trim including a matte black surround for the kidney grille
and tailpipe finishers in Black Chrome, M Sport brakes with black or
blue brake calipers bearing the M logo, an M Sport exhaust system, ,
and the Illuminated Kidney Grille.

The M Sport Professional package is also available on the X7 M60i.
Here, it consists of brake calipers in either black or blue and
Extended Shadowline Trim.

Another particularly striking detail can be added to the
BMW X7 M60i in celebration of BMW M GmbH’s anniversary year. The
optional “BMW M 50 Years” emblems for the hood, tailgate and hubcaps
echo the classic Motorsport emblems on the early racing cars created
by BMW M.

Engines, transmissions, and BMW xDrive. New 48V mild hybrid
technology brings extra assurance and efficiency.

The new BMW X7 offers a choice of two state-of-the-art and extremely
powerful engines from the modular generation of the BMW Group
Efficient Dynamics engine family. The range is topped by a 523 bhp
4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 in the BMW X7 M60i. The X7 xDrive40i
is powered by a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder, which has
been given a 40 hp boost to 375.

V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and optimized efficiency
in the BMW X7 M60i.

In the new BMW X7 M60i xDrive, the 48V mild hybrid system connects
with the updated 4.4-liter V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo
technology. The new V8 utilizes the thermodynamic benefits of a
cross-bank exhaust manifold, bank-symmetrical turbochargers, and
external engine oil cooling. In addition, a reinforced crankshaft
drive, further developed turbocharging with a blow-off valve, a new
oil pump and a weight-minimized oil sump all play a role in increasing
the engine’s efficiency.

The combination of the engine and the electric motor integrated into
the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission gives customers the twin
benefits of optimized response and power delivery under acceleration
and increased efficiency thanks to adaptive recuperation at up to
0.13 g. The controlled intervention of the electric motor also
noticeably increases comfort levels when the Auto Start Stop function
cuts in and in idling and coasting situations. The coasting function
with deactivated combustion engine comes into play when the Driving
Experience Control mode ECO PRO is selected.

With its output of 523 bhp and peak torque of 553 lb-ft, the
eight-cylinder engine propels the X7 M60i from 0 to 60 mph in an
estimated 4.5 seconds. The relentless power development of the V8
engine is accompanied by an emotionally rich soundtrack from the
standard-fitted sports exhaust system.

Premiere of the new inline 6-cylinder engine in the BMW X7 xDrive40i.

Making its debut in the new BMW X7 xDrive40i, the 3-liter inline
6-cylinder engine boasts a wealth of innovations in the combustion
process, gas exchange, valve control, injection, and ignition system.
Its maximum output of 375 bhp is up by 40 compared to its predecessor,
while peak torque rises by 52 lb-ft to 383 – and can be boosted to as
much 398 lb-ft with the assistance of the mild hybrid system.

The Miller cycle shortens the opening time of the intake valves,
which subsequently leads to an increase in the effectiveness of the
turbocharging system and the intercooler. This reduces fuel
consumption and emission levels significantly across the entire load
range. The VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control now includes a
switchable rocker arm on the exhaust side, which allows gas exchange
to be interrupted, if required. This means that when the driver
releases the accelerator, a higher proportion of the braking energy
can be absorbed by the mild hybrid system’s generator and fed into the
48V battery by means of recuperation.

The VANOS variable camshaft timing now works electrically. This means
the adjustment range can be expanded to minimize emissions even
further. Power development and emissions also benefit from a new
exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head.

The new engine accelerates the BMW X7 xDrive40i from 0 to 60 mph in
an estimated 5.6 seconds.

New 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 with 48V mild hybrid technology for
the ALPINA XB7.

The enhancements engineered into the powertrains of the X7 also
benefit the upcoming XB7 luxury-performance SAV. ALPINA engineers
have adapted the powerful 8-cylinder engine specifically to the ALPINA
drivetrain philosophy of enormous power and prodigious low-RPM
torque. As a result, the 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 now produces 630 bhp
and 590 lb-ft of torque. Enough to launch the XB7 from 0-60 mph in an
explosive 4.0 seconds, on to a maximum speed of 180 mph.

New eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with Launch Control and
Sprint function.

All model variants of the new BMW X7 are fitted with a new 8-speed
Steptronic Sport transmission. Super-fast gear changes and sharper
shift characteristics bring additional sporting verve to the driving experience.

Drivers will also be able to make use of the new Sprint function when
a quick burst of speed is needed. When the driver pulls the left-hand
shift paddle for at least one second, the transmission automatically
shifts into the lowest usable gear. At the same time, all the
powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sportiest
settings and the mild hybrid system’s electric boost effect is activated.

Driving dynamics and chassis technology. Covering all the
bases in agility and comfort.

The BMW X7 is renowned for exceptional comfort. The adaptive two-axle
air suspension works in harmony with electronically controlled dampers
to deliver signature BMW dynamic prowess combined with excellent
comfort on long journeys. Standard specification for the new
BMW X7 M60i xDrive now includes Integral Active Steering and active
roll stabilization, both of which are available as options for the X7 xDrive40i.

All the chassis systems have been retuned for the new BMW X7 to
enable it to span the widest possible spectrum between sporty handling
and driving comfort. The scope of its performance repertoire can be
explored via the Driving Experience Control modes. The BMW X7 M60i
boasts a specialized chassis setup, including extra-stiff upper mounts
for the front axle control arms and specially tuned springs and
dampers. Alongside improved steering precision, this results most
prominently in sharper agility and cornering dynamics.

The Integral Active Steering system that comes as standard in the new
BMW X7 M60i and as part of the optional Dynamic Handling Package
available for the xDrive40i makes even lighter work of maneuvering,
increases agility at moderate speeds and optimizes poise at high
speeds, particularly when changing lanes. Speed-sensitive control of
the rear-wheel steering means the wheels are turned in either the same
or the opposite direction to the front wheels, depending on road
speed. And in very challenging driving situations, stabilizing
steering inputs at the rear wheels can help to keep the BMW X7 safely
on track. Steering the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the
front wheels at low speeds enables easy maneuvering and noticeably
reduces its turning circle.

Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview: first class agility and comfort.

Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview (standard in the new
BMW X7 M60i, and part of the Dynamic Handling Package on the
xDrive40i) promises supremely assured and dynamic handling ability
thanks to its active roll stabilization. Roll stabilization at both
axles is combined with the adaptive suspension and factors in
additional information from the navigation system, driving style
analysis, and camera-based anticipation data to maximize both dynamic
prowess and ride comfort.

Since the adaptive air suspension with self-levelling function
maintains the full range of spring travel when the vehicle is carrying
a load, the addition of active roll stabilization makes it possible to
activate a softer air spring setting and increase ride comfort. The
anti-roll bars between the wheels are disconnected, reducing the
amount of body roll caused by surface imperfections on one side of the
vehicle. This has the effect of decreasing the lateral acceleration
forces and the obtrusive “head toss” they cause. The active anti-roll
bars counter centrifugal force in corners, thereby reducing body roll
significantly and further enhancing driving comfort.

23-inch light-alloy wheels available for a BMW model for the first time.

Standard specification for the BMW X7 xDrive40i includes 21-inch
light-alloy wheels on 285/45R tires. The new BMW X7 M60i rides as
standard on 22-inch M light-alloy wheels with 275/40R tires up front
and 315/35R tires at the back. 22-inch light-alloy items in a variety
of designs and with mixed-size tires can be found on the options list.
And the new BMW X7 is offered with the option of factory-fitted
23-inch light-alloy wheels. The 23-inch BMW Individual light-alloy
wheels are fitted with performance tires measuring 275/35R at the
front and 315/30R at the rear.

Besides its tire pressure indicator for each individual wheel, the
new BMW X7 also features a digital tire diagnosis function as
standard. The only one of its kind in this segment, this function uses
a cloud-based algorithm to detect pressure loss far sooner than the
vehicle’s Tire Pressure Monitor can. The driver is notified of any
pressure loss together with the recommended course of action via the
My BMW App. Statistical information and AI methods can also be
employed to predict wear performance for the vehicle’s tires and
thereby forecast the remaining tire life until the recommended minimum
tread depth is reached. The digital tire diagnosis function can be set
to automatically inform the customer of any tire-related technical
issue requiring action.

A sumptuous feeling of space, innovative digital services.

The new BMW X7 delivers generous levels of spaciousness for
passengers in six or seven seats. The new design of the interior with
the sweeping BMW Curved Display, a new instrument panel including an
ambient light bar in its lower section and new upholstery variants
create an innovative and exclusive ambience. The latest generation of
BMW iDrive and new digital services underscore the modern and
progressive mission statement of the new BMW X7.

Like the spacious and versatile nature of the interior, high-quality
materials and further expanded standard equipment also help to
generate an exclusive on-board ambience. For example, multi-contour
comfort seats are now standard on X7 xDrive40i. And the functionality
of the driver assistance and parking systems available as standard or
as options has been significantly expanded for the new BMW X7.

An all-encompassing focus on sustainability.

The BMW Group has set out exacting sustainability targets in its
corporate strategy which will be applied as part of an
all-encompassing approach across the vehicle lifecycles. For example,
the procurement strategy in place focuses on meeting environmental
and social standards, respecting human rights, protecting natural
resources, and reducing CO2 emissions. Power generated from
renewable sources is used for vehicle production at BMW Group Plant
Spartanburg. And BMW is increasing its use of secondary raw materials.
For example, the air ducts for the braking system, radiator and rear
heating in the new BMW X7 are manufactured from 50 per cent recycled
plastic and the cable channels from 100 per cent recycled plastic. The
luggage compartment trim paneling is likewise made from fully recycled
plastic. And the BMW X7’s floor mats consist of a plastic thread
known as Econyl, which is made from recycled nylon waste in a
specially developed process. The CO2 emissions from
manufacture of the recycled plastic are around 80 per cent below the
levels posted in conventional production of petroleum-based nylon.

Now standard: heated comfort seats for the driver and front passenger.

The new BMW X7 provides heated multi-contour comfort seats for the
driver and front passenger as standard. These offer fully electric
adjustment of the seat position and head restraint height (including
memory function), plus lumbar support. Active seat ventilation and a
massage function for the driver and front passenger can be added as an option.

A new, extremely high-quality vegan surface material called Sensafin
comes as standard equipment in the X7 xDrive40i. Sensafin has
leather-like properties, exclusive three-dimensional quilting, and
surface perforation to enhance seating comfort. It is available in
Black, Silverstone, Cognac and Coffee.

Extended Merino leather is standard on the X7 M60i and optional on X7
xDrive40i. On both models, the optional BMW Individual full Merino
leather upholstery can be ordered in Black, Ivory White, Tartufo and
for the first time, Ivory White/Atlas Grey. This two-tone option shows
off the exclusive geometry of the interior surfaces particularly effectively.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with intuitive touch control.

The progressive design of the cockpit in the new BMW X7 has brought
about a significant reduction in the number of buttons and controls in
favor of digital control for numerous functions. The integration of
the BMW Curved Display has been a driving force in the adoption of
this modern, digital direction of travel. The BMW Curved Display is
made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel
and a 14.9-inch Central Control Display. The two screens merge into
one fully digital and high-resolution display unit behind a single
glass surface. The BMW Curved Display is angled ergonomically towards
the driver, making the intuitive touch control even more
straightforward. However, the front passenger can also view the screen
content and operate the system using the iDrive controller,
touchscreen, voice control or gesture control. The high-quality
display technology using anti-reflective glass also makes it possible
to dispense with the customary binnacle for shielding the readouts
from sunlight, giving the cockpit area an uncluttered and airy appearance.

Slim instrument panel with innovative ambient light bar.

The integration of the BMW Curved Display is part of an all-new
design for the instrument panel. It has an extremely slim form in the
new BMW X7, its horizontal structure emphasizing the width of the
interior and exuding cutting-edge elegance. In the central area of the
instrument panel, the broad, smoothly curving trim element in standard
fine-grain wood provides the perfect stage for the BMW Curved Display.

Another new feature in the new BMW X7 is the ambient light bar, which
makes its debut here below the interior trim strip in the front
passenger area. Its crystalline surface structure and effective
backlighting – through the use of LED units and a graphic including
“X7” lettering (or the M logo in the new BMW X7 M60i) – enhance the
aura of exclusivity inside the cabin.

The ambient light bar is an integral element of the light effects
activated in various situations. In the Welcome Scenario, the driver
is greeted by effective brightening of the interior illumination as
they approach the car. When the driver gets out of the car and locks
it, the ambient lighting dims in a flowing movement from back to
front, with the light bar’s illumination concluding the sequence by
retracting dynamically towards the front passenger side of the car.
The light bar signals an incoming telephone call with a dynamic chaser
light, while the contour lighting in the first row of seats pulses in tandem.

The air vents in the instrument panel have been totally redesigned.
The central outlets are extremely slim and have been integrated into
the cockpit with subtle elegance. The outer vents have high-gloss
black slats and are bordered by delicate chrome surrounds.

Control panel in the center console with new selector lever.

A newly-designed center console control panel houses the iDrive
controller, the Start/Stop button and the buttons activating the
electric parking brake, and air suspension settings. Also found here
are the Driving Experience Control buttons and the newly designed gear selector.

Exclusive glass applications for selected controls can be specified
as an option. This both visually and haptically appealing design
enhancement adorns the selector lever, the Start/Stop button and the
iDrive Controller.

Display and operating system, connectivity. BMW Curved
Display and latest-generation BMW iDrive.

The BMW Live Cockpit Plus fitted as standard in the new BMW X7
includes the latest edition of the BMW iDrive display/operation
system. Boasting new-generation BMW iDrive 8 software along with
exceptionally powerful connectivity and data processing capabilities,
it takes the interaction between the driver and vehicle into the
digital future. The new BMW iDrive system offers many more options for
drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal control of vehicle,
navigation, infotainment and communication functions, and digital services.

The user experience on board the new BMW X7 is underpinned by the
seamless interaction between the BMW Curved Display, voice control and
BMW gesture control, the iDrive Controller, the multifunction buttons
on the steering wheel and the BMW Head-Up Display that comes with the
BMW Live Cockpit Professional option.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with state-of-the-art graphics.

The BMW Curved Display in the new BMW X7 is formed by a 12.3-inch
information display and a 14.9-inch Central Control Display. The
screens are housed together behind a glass surface that curves towards
the driver, so they merge into a single, fully digital,
high-resolution unit. With its ergonomic driver-centric positioning,
the BMW Curved Display makes the already intuitive touch control even
more user-friendly. At the same time, the front passenger is also in
an ideal position to view the displays and operate the system by
either touch or voice control.

The BMW Curved Display’s state-of-the-art graphics and the operating
system’s menu structure have been designed with a smartphone-style
appearance. The user interface impresses with its striking forms,
dynamic light effects, and strong depth of color. The graphical layout
of the information display and the content shown in the center of the
display can each be adapted to suit the situation and requirements.
The clearly structured arrangement of widgets on the control display’s
home screen provides a simple overview of the menu options and can be
configured by the driver as desired. Frequently used functions are
given a prominent position.

Precision navigating with Augmented View.

The new Augmented View function within the navigation system included
as part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional enables the driver to
find their way with great accuracy by supplementing the navigation
system’s map view. A live video stream from the driver’s perspective
is shown on the center display and augmented with context-specific
information. When dealing with confusing junctions, for instance, an
animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help
the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The new generation of BMW iDrive also sees the BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant gaining additional skills. Instructions in natural
speech can now be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window,
or operate the panoramic glass roof, for instance. Various functions
of the driver assistance systems in the new BMW X7 can also be
controlled via voice command. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
is additionally capable of recognizing routines and proactively making
suggestions to the driver regarding user habits.

When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new graphics
appear in the control display to emphasize the system’s interactive
character. The graphic “turns” towards the speaker, thereby
visualizing how the system is listening attentively to what is being
said. This new visualization approach features spheres of light in
differing sizes and brightness levels, giving the assistant more space
and new ways of expressing itself. The Intelligent Personal Assistant
graphic can appear in the Head-Up Display, instrument cluster or
control display, depending on who addresses it.

Optimum connectivity with 5G and Personal eSIM.

The new BMW X7 moves into the era of 5G connectivity. The standard
Personal eSIM essentially turns the vehicle into another connected
device i.e., a cell phone or tablet. Mobile reception is significantly
improved by the vehicle’s own 5G antenna system.

The Personal eSIM allows the customer to use the communications and
connectivity functions covered by their mobile contract from their car
with ease – even in situations where they don’t have their smartphone
with them. Users will be able to add their vehicle to their existing
mobile contract by activating the Personal eSIM via one of the
available network operators. What’s more, the Personal eSIM isn’t
linked to just one vehicle, but the user’s BMW ID – meaning it can be
transferred to other BMW vehicles with Personal eSIM functionality.
The eSIM is configured automatically when users sign in with their BMW
ID, after which it is available immediately.

Personalization using the BMW ID.

When customers interact with the new BMW iDrive 8 in the new BMW X7,
they will find their user experience is increasingly personalized
thanks to their BMW ID. When signing into a vehicle for the first
time, simply scanning a QR code is all it takes to create a new BMW ID
on a smartphone. The newly registered BMW ID is automatically signed
into the vehicle. From this point, any individual settings made by the
customer as they turn the vehicle into their own personal BMW X7 are
stored in the BMW ID. The vehicle is also automatically added to the
My BMW App.

Digital Key Plus provides exceptional convenience and
security.

The optional BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to lock and
unlock their new BMW X7 with their Apple iPhone – via both Near Field
Communication (NFC) technology and security-enhanced ultra-wideband
(UWB) radio technology – without removing the phone from their pocket
or bag, making a conventional car key unnecessary. Once the user is on
board, the Apple iPhone can be simply left in their pocket or placed
in the smartphone tray. The BMW Digital Key Plus can be set up using
the My BMW App. The car owner can share access with up to five other
users and has the option of creating a configuration for young drivers
which restricts top speed, engine power, maximum radio volume and more
via their iPhone.

Welcome Scenario greets the X7 driver.

The engaging user experience starts before the driver has even
reached the vehicle thanks to a newly devised Welcome Scenario.
Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology allows precision location
pinpointing between the vehicle and the key or compatible smartphone.

Once the distance drops below three meters, an automated and
perfectly coordinated welcome sequence commences. It starts with an
orchestrated lighting effect using the exterior and interior lights,
including the light carpet. When the driver is about 1.5 meters away,
the doors automatically unlock. Once they are inside, the BMW Curved
Display shows a choreographed start-up animation with a personal
greeting in a customized welcome window, along with handy suggestions
and information. In addition to this, the BMW ID settings are loaded
and the smartphone is connected.

Driver assistance systems. Intelligent technology enhances
comfort and safety.

Standout innovations include the extended range of functions offered
by the frontal collision warning, route monitoring and traffic light
recognition features, as well as the Trailer Assistant and Maneuver
Assistant. Plus, existing functions can be improved or expanded by
means of Remote Software Upgrades.

Standard: frontal collision warning – for improved safety in urban
traffic – and Driving Assistant.

The front-collision warning system fitted as standard in the new BMW
X7 now comes with numerous additional functions, which help the driver
to prevent accidents in the same way as Collision Warning and
pedestrian and cyclist warning with braking function. The system now
also reacts to oncoming traffic, for example. And it provides
additional safety when turning right in urban areas by warning the
driver of pedestrians and cyclists approaching the vehicle parallel to
the road from the front or rear, reducing the risk of a collision.
Visual and acoustic warnings are triggered, and the brakes are applied
to prevent the driver from continuing with their turn.

Another new feature is the exit warning function, which provides
additional safety when the vehicle is stationary. It activates visual
and acoustic signals if a vehicle or cyclist is approaching the BMW X7
at speed and there is a risk of collision on either side of the
vehicle if a door were to be opened. The driver or front passenger is
alerted to the danger by flashing LEDs in the mirror or the ambient
lighting. An acoustic warning is also emitted.

The right speed for every situation – automatically.

The route monitoring function within Active Cruise Control also
considers the nature of the route being followed. This function uses
the navigation system’s map to look ahead and reduce the car’s speed
when approaching a corner, a roundabout, an intersection, or an exit.

Parking Assistant Professional with Maneuver Assistant.

The Parking Assistant Professional’s repertoire of functions now
includes the Trailer Assistant, which makes it easier to execute
reversing maneuvers when towing a trailer. The system does this by
turning the steering as necessary to move in the direction selected by
the driver with a turn of the iDrive Controller. And tilting the
Controller enables the BMW X7, complete with trailer, to be backed up
in a perfectly straight line.

The new Maneuver Assistant uses GPS data and the trajectory data from
steering movements to store up to ten different maneuvers covering a
distance of up to 200 meters each. When the vehicle next arrives at a
memorized starting point, such as the entrance to a narrow driveway
with tight curves, the maneuver Assistant will be able to carry out
all the tasks required to complete the maneuver, controlling the
accelerator, brakes and steering as well as changing gear to move
forward or reverse. While the automated maneuver is being performed,
the driver can focus on monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings. If
they so choose, the driver can even exit the vehicle and operate
Maneuver Assistant via the My BMW app.

Parking Assistant Professional also includes the Remote Theft
Recorder function. If the vehicle is stolen, this system sends a
message to the customer’s smartphone. The customer can then access and
store the videos recorded by the cameras at the front and rear of the
new BMW X7 and on its exterior mirrors.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ –
July 30, 2020…This week, BMW is very proud to be
named a Wards 10 Best UX (User Experience) award winner for the BMW
X7. Earlier this month, the X6 M was named a Wards 10 Best Interiors
award winner for 2020.

BMW X7

The seven-passenger BMW X7 arrived in 2019 and immediately resonated
with BMW customers looking for the increased space and comfort of a
three-row Sports Activity Vehicle without any compromises in
performance or handling which BMW is renowned for.

The X7’s luxuriously appointed interior is underpinned by the very
best technology that BMW has to offer. Now in its seventh generation,
BMW’s iDrive and the new Live Cockpit Professional work together to
offer the driver and passengers multiple ways to interact with their
Ultimate Driving Machine. Two 12.3-inch fully digital displays and
large colorful head-up display deliver information in an easy to use
and intuitive format. From the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant’s
voice control to the central touch screen, hand gestures and familiar
iDrive rotary controller, ways of interacting with your BMW has never
been more effortless.

“We are grateful to the WardsAuto jurors for their continued vehicle
testing in these unprecedented times to bring important information to
the new car shoppers.” said Ralph Mahler, Head of BMW Product
Planning and Strategy. “BMW first introduced the concept of
iDrive nineteen years ago and with today’s seventh generation, it is
truly the most intuitive interface in the industry. We want to offer
our owners the choice to interact with their BMW in any way they want
to, and our new user interface delivers on this promise.”

“The X7, BMW’s largest vehicle ever, incorporates the first-rate
drivetrain and interior one would expect from the German luxury brand,
but it’s also designed to sooth the soul with a user experience beyond
compare,” says Tom Murphy, WardsAuto Managing Editor.
“The X7 has a ‘Caring Car’ menu as part of the BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant, which serves as a portal to personal wellness and
rejuvenation. The X7’s infotainment system also has ‘Experience Modes’
to tailor your ride for optimum comfort. The driver can toggle through
‘Executive,’ ‘Expressive’ and ‘Well Being,’ each one adjusting comfort
settings based on your mood or situation. Beyond all that, the X7 has
quick phone pairing, wireless charging, WiFi connectivity, up to eight
USB ports, brilliant graphics, an intuitive iDrive user interface and
top-notch driver-assistance systems. You can’t ask for much more.”

BMW X6 M

When the BMW X6 was first introduced, it started a completely new
Sports Activity Coupe segment in the industry. Now, twelve years
later, in its recently launched third generation, the X6 and the 600
hp X6 M in particular continue to win over enthusiasts not only in the
U.S. but around the world.

“Customers are drawn to the X6 M’s muscular and outgoing
personality.” said Ralph Mahler, Head of BMW Product Planning
and Strategy. “We are especially proud of the global
success story that this vehicle, designed for and built in the U.S.
market, has become. The designers, engineers and product planners have
all worked very hard to deliver on the customers’ expectations of
their X6 M providing the absolute best combination of luxury and
sport. We thank the WardsAuto editors for this important recognition
and are happy to accept it on everyone’s behalf.”

“There are certain design and styling elements that make a BMW
interior unmistakable.” said Tom Murphy, WardsAuto Managing
Editor. “The dramatic coupe-like profile makes the X6 look
much sportier than a conventional SUV, and the interior amplifies
these themes with carbon-fiber trim, tri-color stitching and a color
scheme that demands your attention. But it’s the seats, with hexagonal
quilting on Merino leather, that shine as the brightest star in the X6
M interior, with integrated head restraints and massive shoulder and
hip bolsters that secure front-row occupants for the full experience
of the Ultimate Driving Machine.”

Woodcliff Lake, NJ –
May 22, 2019…Today, BMW introduces two new M
Performance models, the BMW X5 M50i and BMW X7 M50i, which join
the X5 and X7 lineups this fall when production begins in BMW
Plant Spartanburg, SC.

Both models feature the new top version of the N63 4.4L TwinPower
Turbo V8 engine backed by an eight-speed sport automatic
transmission, BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive , M Sport
differential, M Sport exhaust system and model-specific M GmbH
suspension tuning.

Offering true sports car performance, both BMW Sports Activity
Vehicles offer excellent handling and traction across varied
surfaces and weather conditions complemented by luxurious interior
appointments and the same towing capabilities as their non-M
Performance siblings.

Power and performance

The latest generation of the 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine
features numerous detailed improvements. Two twin-scroll
turbochargers with charge air cooling located within the V-shaped
space between the cylinder banks, High Precision Injection,
VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable
camshaft timing all form part of the M Performance TwinPower Turbo
technology package which delivers 523 hp between 5,500 and 6,000
rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque between 1,800 – 4,600 rpm. - an
increase of 67 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque over the X5 xDrive50i and
X7 xDrive50i models.

A new aluminium alloy has been used to increase the strength of
the engine block. The wire-arc sprayed iron coating for the
cylinder walls serves to reduce frictional losses. Reinforced,
Grafal-coated pistons and optimized piston rings are designed to
endure the stress on the crank drive that comes with the extra
output and torque. To enhance engine smoothness, torsional
vibration is minimized with the help of a viscous damper on the crankshaft.

The BMW X5 M50i accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in just
4.1 seconds with the larger X7 M50i right behind at 4.5 seconds.
Both vehicles feature electronically limited top speeds of 130 mph
when equipped with all-season tires and 155 mph when equipped with
summer performance tires.

Eight-speed Sport Automatic transmission

The eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s new control
electronics help to increase the powertrain’s overall performance
and efficiency. Intelligent connectivity enables the Sport
automatic transmission to adapt its shift strategy according to
the route and driving situation by working with the navigation
system and if equipped, combining this data with information from
the Active Cruise Control system’s radar sensor. This makes it
possible for the transmission to shift proactively instead of
reactively insuring that the vehicle is always in the correct gear
for the upcoming road conditions.

Shift paddles on the steering wheel allow for quick manual gear
selection, while a Launch Control function allows for accelerating
from a standing start with maximum available traction.

xDrive all-wheel drive with M Sport rear differential.

BMW’s rear-biased xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system,
found in the X5 M50i and X7 M50i, is able to split drive-torque
between the front and rear wheels with great speed and precision.
Full power can be directed automatically by the system to the rear
wheels in situations where all-wheel drive traction is not required.

The standard electronically controlled rear M Sport differential
helps support dynamic driving by optimizing the transfer of power
to the road in all driving situations. Managed by the Dynamic
Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function for the rear
differential improves traction and power delivery when driving
over road surfaces with differing levels of grip for the left-rear
and right-rear wheels by reducing wheel spin when a specific tire
is struggling for traction.

Chassis and Suspension

The BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i models feature a double-wishbone
front and five-link rear suspension that has been painstakingly
gone over by M GmbH. This setup provides the best balance of
exceptional traction on rough terrain and excellent dynamic
response and ride comfort on pavement. The bushings, spring and
damper settings have all been tuned to complement the new models’
increased power and performance.

The BMW X5 M50i is equipped with the Adaptive M Suspension while
the BMW X7 M50i is equipped with a two-axle air suspension system
(optional on the X5 M50i) which allows for a 0.8 inch lowering of
ride height when in Sport mode or when speeds exceed 85 mph. The
driver may also increase vehicle ride height of air suspension
equipped vehicles by 1.6” for greater ground clearance when required.

Wheels, Tires and Brakes

Both models are equipped with large M Sport Brakes featuring
two-piece, lightweight compound brake disks with blue painted
calipers and M logos.

The BMW X5 M50i is equipped with standard 20 inch M Star-spoke,
bi-color, light alloy wheels shod with 275/45R20 all-season
run-flat tires. Optional wheel and tire packages include 21 inch
wheels with 275/40R21 front and 315/35R21 performance run-flat
tires and 22 inch wheels with 275/35R22 front and 315/30R22 rear
performance non run-flat tires.

The BMW X7 M50i comes equipped with standard 22 inch cerium grey
M V-spoke light alloy wheels with 275/40R22 front and 315/35R22
performance run-flat tires. Options include bi-color orbit grey or
black 22 inch wheels and 21 inch wheels mounted with 285/45R21
all-season run-flat tires.

M Performance design and features

The new BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i models feature front bumpers with
larger openings to allow for greater air flow to the cooling
system. The rocker panels and rear bumpers have been sculptured to
set the models apart from the rest of the line. BMW Individual
high-gloss Shadowline trim and Cerium Grey highlight selected
individual exterior components.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional: Seventh generation of BMW iDrive

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional combines a new display and
control concept and the ultimate in connectivity to create a
superb all-round package. The latest-generation of the iDrive
comprises a high-resolution digital 12.3” instrument cluster
display behind the steering wheel and a 12.3” center display
diagonally across. The system offers many hardware upgrades
including new haptic controls on the iDrive controller, an
advanced tablet-like touch interface, stunning visualizations, and
the largest displays available in a BMW. The multi-modal approach
of the iDrive touch controller, large touchscreen center display,
cloud based voice control, and gesture control allow users to
interact in the way of their choosing.

The seventh incarnation of iDrive has a cutting-edge,
fully-digital design and is geared more closely to the driver’s
needs by allowing them to tailor the system to their own
preferences with customizable widgets of information. This new
level of personalization is then stored in the BMW cloud and can
follow the customer to other BMW vehicles. Information from
categories such as driving, entertainment, navigation,
connectivity, and from the vehicle info itself, can be selected in
nearly any combination in any of four layouts on the Center
Display. Multiple pages can be created and easily accessed with a
simple swipe across the screen with a finger.

Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the
Navigation Professional system, a hard-drive-based multimedia
system with 32 GB of memory and six USB ports, plus Bluetooth
interfaces. The driver can be automatically detected and personal
settings activated either using the traditional vehicle key or by
downloading the driver’s personal settings from the BMW Cloud.

A collection of bundled digital services will be offered as the
Connected Package Professional. The Connected Package Professional
provides Remote Services, Concierge Services, On-Street Parking
Information, and Real Time Traffic Information for the first 4
years of ownership. This package allows easy integration and
adaptation of new technology over time. Customers can continue to
download various new digital services individually as they become
available or renew existing services via the ConnectedDrive Store.

After showcasing the BMW X7 and BMW 8 Series concepts at last year’s
Los Angeles Auto Show, BMW returns to the 2018 show with both
production ready vehicles. The two all-new vehicles will make their
world premieres alongside the all-new BMW M340i sedan and the
future-focused BMW Vision iNEXT Concept at the BMW press
conference on Wednesday, November 28 at 8:40 a.m. PST on the BMW
stand in the Los Angeles Convention Center. The BMW press
conference will also be livestreamed on www.BMWUSANews.com. English,
German and Spanish-speaking BMW representatives will be available for
interviews throughout both press days on Wednesday, November 28 and
Thursday, November 29.

In addition to events at the Convention Center, BMW will host a
special off-site preview of the BMW Vision iNEXT Concept on Tuesday,
November 27. For more information, please contact Phil DiIanni at phil.diianni@bmwna.com.

The first-ever BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicle makes
its world premiere in Los Angeles. The newest and largest model in the
BMW X line-up uses outstanding powertrain options and chassis
technology, plus generous levels of space in each of its three rows of
seats, and advanced equipment features, to deliver an unparalleled
experience for the driver and passengers. The design of the new
chassis provides the best balance of exceptional traction on rough
terrain and excellent dynamic response and ride comfort on pavement.
The BMW X7 comes standard with two-axle air suspension and
electronically controlled dampers to sharpen the vehicle’s handling,
while at the same time increasing ride comfort. The BMW X7 will begin
production at BMW’s Spartanburg, SC plant later this year in
preparation for its March 2019 market launch.

The BMW 8 Series Convertible makes its world
premiere alongside the new BMW 8 Series Coupe in Los
Angeles, marking the return of the famed BMW nameplate for the first
time in 20 years. The new BMW M850i xDrive features a 530hp V8
twin-turbocharged engine – the latest generation of BMW’s
award-winning 4.4-liter 8-cylinder engine – combined with BMW xDrive
intelligent all-wheel-drive and BMW Efficient Lightweight design.
Body, powertrain and suspension were all honed to achieve the agility,
precision and poise expected of a top-class premium sports coupe.

The BMW 3 Series has epitomized the concept of a
sports sedan for more than 40 years, exuding dynamic design, agile
handling, exceptional efficiency and innovative equipment features.
Following the debut of the all-new BMW 3 Series in Paris this October,
the M Performance variant of the seventh generation BMW 3 Series makes
its world premiere in Los Angeles. The all-new BMW M340i
Sedan showcases the full dynamic potential of the all-new BMW
3 Series. An updated 382 hp 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder in-line engine, M
Performance chassis tuning, xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the
standard M Sport rear differential will deliver performance attributes
that will impress any driver. The new BMW 3 Series Sedan also
features a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems designed
to ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions – such
as traffic jams – and assist with difficult maneuvering situations.
The new model generation offers a far wider choice of standard and
optionally available systems to enhance specific aspects of comfort
and safety. These advanced driver assistance systems position the new
BMW 3 Series Sedan ahead of its rivals in automated driving.

The new, third-generation BMW Z4 M40i Roadster is a
premium open-top sports car boasting a classic fabric soft-top, an
emotion-packed body design and a pure, driver-focused interior.
Agility, performance and precise handling have always been top
priorities for the Z4 family but the new two-seater’s body, powertrain
and chassis have all been developed to ensure the new Z4 Roadster
arrives with a genuine sports car performance pedigree. A perfect
50:50 weight distribution, the newly designed front double-joint
spring strut suspension and the new five-link rear suspension are
complemented by the standard rear M Sport differential, while M Sport
brakes ensure the chassis is fully capable of using all of the power
and torque available from the BMW 3.0-liter 6-cylinder inline motor.
382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. of torque help the Z4 M40i Roadster
sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

Launched earlier this year, the all-new, fourth-generation
BMW X5
Sports Activity Vehicle retains the hallmark
proportions of an SAV, while offering an all-new streamlined design
language including clean surfacing and precise lines that accentuate
elegant poise and authority. A sculpted hood, a short front overhang,
lightly hexagonal wheel arches and the dynamic sweep of the roofline
exemplify the sporty, yet rugged, character of the all-new 2019 BMW
X5. The BMW X5 offers an array of significantly expanded driver
assistance systems, such as Extended Traffic Jam Assist for limited
access highways that uses an interior camera to monitor the driver’s
attention to the road ahead, reducing the requirement of putting one’s
hands on the steering wheel every 30-50 seconds. Off-road capabilities
have been greatly enhanced with the available Off-Road Package that
includes two-axle air suspension, M Sport rear locking differential
and four drive modes tailored to maximize traction on sand, gravel,
rocks and snow. Remote starting and a factory installed trailer tow
hitch, rated for 7,200 pounds, also make their debut. Since its
introduction almost 20 years ago, the BMW X5 has helped define the
premium Sports Activity Vehicle segment, selling more than 2.2 million
units worldwide.

Highly automated, emission-free and fully connected, the BMW
Vision iNEXT Concept brings all of the BMW Group’s
strategic innovation fields together for the first time. The fully
electric iNEXT boasts the size and proportions of a modern BMW Sports
Activity Vehicle and instantly conveys its trailblazing through
clearly sculpted forms and surfaces. The BMW Vision iNEXT brings the
possibility of autonomous mobility into the near future and showcases
the BMW Group’s approach in the strategic fields of autonomous
driving, electric mobility, connectivity and intelligent design. The
series-produced version of the BMW iNEXT will arrive in 2021.

Fifth production line at BMW Group Spartanburg plant

The new 2019 X7 becomes the fifth BMW model to be
currently produced in Plant Spartanburg, South Carolina. The new X7
will be added to the 1,400 vehicles, including the X3, X4, X5 and X6,
which are already produced every day at BMW Group’s largest global
production plant. In 2017, the 10,000 employees of Plant Spartanburg
produced 371,284 vehicles, 70 percent of which (272,346), were
exported to 140 countries around the world, making BMW the largest
exporter of vehicles from the U.S by value.

To date, the BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in Plant
Spartanburg and is supported by 40 suppliers in the SC area and 300
suppliers across the U.S. The current manufacturing capacity stands at
450,000 vehicles and a further 1,000 new jobs are expected to be added
by 2021. Since the plant opened on September 8, 1994, 3.9 million
vehicles have been built at the South Carolina location.

BMW X7 exterior: A new dimension in luxury

BMW has pulled back the covers on a new definition of automotive
luxury. The BMW X7 blends presence, exclusivity and spaciousness with
the versatile and agile driving properties customers would expect from
a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The newest and largest model in
the BMW X line-up uses outstanding powertrain options and chassis
technology, plus generous levels of space in each of its three rows of
seats, a luxurious ambience and advanced equipment features, to
deliver unparalleled experiences for the driver and passengers.

BMW’s new design language brings the modern elegance characteristic
of the brand’s luxury-segment models to the exterior of the BMW X7,
and adds visual poise, assurance and an overriding sense of authority.
The BMW X7 represents the next stage in the premium carmaker’s ongoing
model offensive in the luxury segment.

The expansive exterior dimensions of the BMW X7 take luxury to a new
level. At 203.3 inches in length, 78.7 inches wide and 71.1 inches
tall, and with a wheelbase of 122.2 inches, the X7 displays harmonious
proportions and establishes itself as the new head of the BMW X model
family. A new use of forms, dominated by clearly structured surfaces
and precise lines, lends the BMW X7 its modern aura. The largest
kidney grill ever designed for a BMW model features very prominently
at the front of the new BMW X7. Together with the slim twin headlights
extending up to the grill, it emphasizes the width of the car and
creates presence. When viewed from the side, the large windows and
long, flowing roofline of the new BMW X7 hint at a spacious interior
bathed in light. The rear doors are longer than the front doors,
emphasizing the spaciousness of the SAV’s rear compartment and easing
entry and exit for second and third row seat occupants. Clearly
structured surfaces and the eye-catching character line rising up to
the rear are hallmarks of the brand’s new design language. The
versatile functionality of the new BMW X7 is highlighted by its 8.7
inches of ground clearance.

The sizeable dimensions of the new BMW X7 are also expressed at the
rear, which is broken up by horizontal lines and bordered by vertical
separating edges. The slim LED rear lights provide a clear
segmentation of the rear. Bridging the space between the two units is
a chrome bar – a design cue only previously encountered at the rear of
the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan.

BMW X7 Interior: More space for an exclusive ambiance

The impressive open expanse of the BMW X7 interior brings a new
sensation of space to the luxury segment. The three rows of seats
treat the driver and passengers to an exceptional feeling of roominess
within the X7’s elegantly appointed interior surroundings. Expansive
surfaces and clean structures give the instrument panel a modern look
and its lines flow smoothly into the door panels. Large trim surfaces
framed with electroplated accents on the instrument panel and center
console enhance the interior’s elegant and exclusive aura.

Grouped together clearly in the center console are the iDrive
Controller, newly designed gear selector, the start/stop button, the
Driving Experience Control switches, electronic parking brake switch
and controls governing the settings for the air suspension and
optional off-road modes. The control panel for the standard 4-zone
climate control system also has a new modern design.

A standard three-panel electronically controlled panoramic glass
sunroof floods the interior with light. Combined with the large
windows, the new BMW X7 offers a very open an airy environment to all
vehicle occupants, irrespective of which seat they are in.
Electrically controlled sliding headliner shades are standard for the
front, center and rear sunroof with the third row passengers having
their own controls for the rear sliding shade.

The roominess and versatility of the interior is underlined by the
standard fitment of three rows of seats (offering space for seven
people). The two passengers in the third row can settle into full-size
seats that are fully capable of accommodating adult passengers over
longer journeys. Comfort levels here are enhanced by an additional
rear glass sunroof panel, cup holders and armrests integrated into the
side panel trim. The standard second row configuration offers seating
for three. Alternatively, two extremely comfortable individual
Captain’s Chairs can be specified for the middle row as an option.
These comfort seats offer the same range of adjustments as the seats
for the driver and front passenger. The individual seats for the
second row also feature integrated armrests and comfort cushions. Two
second-row seats with a space between them represent a first for a BMW
SAV and create an exceptionally luxurious ambience in the rear
compartment. The space between the individual seats also provides an
access route to the third row.

In either standard or optional configuration, the second-row seats in
the X7 slide fore and aft through 5.7 inches of travel. Adjustment of
the fore/aft position – like all other seat positions and backrest
angles – is electric for the first, second and third row of seats. The
backrests of the seats in the second and third rows can be folded down
and raised electrically via switches located on the driver’s side as
you enter through the rear doors and in the cargo area. The seats in
the second row can also be tilted forward fully to make getting in and
out as easy as possible for third-row passengers. The second-row seats
can be returned to their upright position at the touch of a button, at
which point child seats can be fixed in place securely and easily
using the ISOFIX attachments.

The fore/aft position of the second-row seats is adjusted using a
control panel integrated into the driver’s door. Drivers of the new
BMW X7 can move the front-passenger’s seat backwards and forwards at
the touch of a button located nearby. This allows the driver to
increase both legroom and ease of entry/exit for the passengers in the
second and third row of seats as required. Additional buttons for seat
and backrest adjustment are located in the rear doors. The backrests
of the second - and third-row seats can also be folded down and raised
– and the second-row seats moved fore and aft – from the cargo area.
When the 3rd row seats are not in use, the new BMW X7 offers 48.6
cubic feet of load capacity. This increases to a maximum 90.4 cubic
feet when the backrests of the standard second row bench seat and
third row seats are folded down. The standard air suspension allows
the car to be lowered (at the touch of a button in the trunk) to make
loading cargo easier. The new BMW X7 features a two-section split
tailgate, both elements of which have electric opening and closing as standard.

Power and Performance

The new 2019 BMW X7 launches with a choice of two updated gasoline
engines. Heading up the range is the BMW X7 xDrive50i, with an
extensively updated 4.4-liter V8 engine. A 3.0-liter inline
six-cylinder engine, found under the hood of the new BMW X7 xDrive40i
rounds out the model line-up. All engines channel their power through
an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel drive is on hand to ensure that power is transferred into
secure progress – on or off road.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in both gasoline engines features
turbocharging, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable
valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.

The new V8 engine: Unrivalled power and an unmistakable sound

Fundamentally upgraded from crankcase to engine management system,
the eight-cylinder engine in the BMW X7 xDrive50i serves up an
intoxicating blend of power delivery and signature V8 soundtrack. The
two turbochargers’ positioning in the “V” between the banks of
cylinders is just one of the standout features of the 4.4-liter unit.
Newly designed heat plates ensure very effective thermal shielding for
the crankcase and cylinder head. A new ignition system allows the
engine to be restarted even more smoothly and swiftly when the Auto
Start Stop function is activated.

The new engine’s peak torque of 479 lb-ft is available over a broad
rev range from 1,500 to 4,750 rpm, while its maximum output of 456 hp
is on tap between 5,250 and 6,000 rpm. This formidable pulling power
is available early and doesn’t let up, resulting in a 0 to 60 mph time
of 5.2 seconds.

Inline-six cylinder gasoline engine with a thirst for revs.

The power unit fitted in the new BMW X7 xDrive40i boasts the
free-revving ability inherent in all inline six-cylinder engines from
BMW, plus a wonderfully eager response. The 3.0-liter engine employs a
single twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection technology whose
maximum pressure of 5,076 psi ensures the fuel is delivered in
extremely precise doses. The straight-six generates its maximum output
of 335 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque 330 lb-ft
is available from 1,500 – 5,200 rpm. The new BMW X7 xDrive40i
accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.

Eight-speed Steptronic transmission: more seamless and integrated

Both engine variants of the new BMW X7 are linked to an improved
version of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, whose wider ratio
spread and new control electronics help to increase the powertrain’s
overall efficiency. New torsion dampers reduce rotational forces and
converter slip for improved shift comfort.

Intelligent connectivity enables the sport automatic transmission to
adapt its shift strategy according to the route and driving situation.
By working with the navigation system, the 8-speed Steptronic
transmission sees the road ahead and combines this data with
information from the Active Cruise Control system’s (optional on the
X7 xDrive40i) radar sensor. This makes it possible for the
transmission to shift proactively instead of reactively insuring not
only that the shifts are more seamless but that the X7 is always in
the correct gear for the upcoming road conditions. When approaching a
vehicle ahead or approaching a downhill section for example, the
8-speed Steptronic transmission will shift down early in order to use
engine braking to maintain speed or decelerate.

The Auto Start Stop function and the coasting function available in
conjunction with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission in the new BMW X7
also benefit from data supplied by the navigation system and by data
supplied by the standard Active Guard driving assistance systems’
front camera. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown – for example
when stopping briefly at junctions or roundabouts – can be prevented.
Movement of vehicles ahead is registered in order to determine the
ideal moment for the Auto Start Stop function to stop and start the
engine. The coasting function is now available when either ECO Pro or
COMFORT mode is selected using the Driving Experience Control switch
between 9 and 99 mph. The efficiency-enhancing decoupling of the
powertrain only takes place in driving situations where performance
and comfort would not be compromised. If the driver suddenly lifts off
the accelerator, the powertrain stays connected so that engine braking
can be used to support deceleration. For the same reason, powertrain
disconnection is also prevented when approaching a junction or a
vehicle ahead.

xDrive all-wheel drive with optional rear locking differential

The task of maximizing traction, agility and directional stability in
the new BMW X7 falls to the latest generation of the BMW xDrive
intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which is now able to split
drive-torque between the front and rear wheels with even greater
precision and speed as the situation demands. For added efficiency,
full power can be directed completely to the rear wheels in situations
where all-wheel drive traction is not required.

The new xDrive system offers a rear-biased set-up for those occasions
when the driver adopts a more sporting style of driving. The optional
electronically controlled rear M Sport differential (available for the
X7 xDrive50i in both the Dynamic Handling Package and in the Off-Road
Package) helps support these times of more dynamic driving. By
limiting equalization of the rotational speeds of the inside and
outside wheels through corners, the M Sport differential is able to
optimize the transfer of power to the road in all driving situations.
As a result, the new BMW X7 can power out of bends with exceptional
momentum. Managed by the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the
locking function for the rear differential also improves traction and
power delivery when driving over loose ground or on road surfaces
offering differing levels of grip for the left-rear and right-rear
wheels. It does so by preventing a wheel from spinning when it is
struggling for grip. The locking effect is produced by means of an
electric motor and allows as much as 1,106 lb-ft of drive torque to be
redirected from the wheel with less grip to the wheel with more grip.

Chassis and Suspension

The design of the new chassis, based on a double-wishbone front
suspension and a five-link rear suspension provides the best balance
of exceptional traction on rough terrain and excellent dynamic
response and ride comfort on pavement. The BMW X7 SAV comes standard
with the Dynamic Damper Control system with two-axle air suspension.
The electronically controlled dampers sharpen the SAV’s handling while
at the same time increasing ride comfort. The driver can select from
two performance settings for a more comfort-oriented or sportier
driving style.

Chassis options available make it possible to boost the off-road
performance, sportiness or comfort of the new BMW X7 more intensely
and effectively than ever before. The Dynamic Handling Package,
available for both the X7 xDrive40i and X7 xDrive50i, includes Active
Comfort Drive with road preview, Integral Active Steering, M Sport
Brakes and on the xDrive50i, the M Sport rear Differential. This
package affords the new X7 with exceptionally agility and dynamic
driving qualities.

The Active Comfort Drive with road preview works with the two-axle
air suspension and an active roll-stabilization system to not only
improve agility and directional stability when turning into corners
but to also optimize traction when accelerating out of them too. The
system uses camera sensors to preview the road ahead of the vehicle
and proactively make suspension adjustments to not only tighten up
suspension settings for upcoming turns but to also increase
straight-line comfort by actively countering oscillations triggered by
road surface imperfections.

Speed-dependent Integral Active Steering turns the rear wheels either
the same direction as the front, to enhance stability in high-speed
maneuvers such as lane changes, or in the opposite direction to the
front wheels, to facilitate low-speed maneuvering by decreasing the
turning radius.

The standard two-axle air suspension system with automatic
self-levelling not only provides a noticeable benefit to ride comfort
but also allows electronic adjustment of vehicle ride height to meet
various needs. The suspension’s air supply is controlled individually
for each wheel using an electrically driven compressor with pressure
reservoir, enabling it to balance out an unevenly loaded vehicle.
Since the air suspension works in tandem with the Dynamic Stability
Control (DSC) system, the vehicle load registered by its sensors can
be factored into braking calculations. When the SPORT driving mode is
engaged or the vehicle’s speed exceeds 85 mph, its ride height is
automatically lowered by 0.8 inches. The driver can also adjust the
body’s ground clearance – for off-road driving, for example – by
pushing a button in the cockpit. The vehicle can be raised in two
stages up to a maximum of 1.6 inches above the standard setting.
Another button in the luggage compartment activates a loading mode
that lowers the vehicle by 1.6 inches. The next time the engine is
started, the system will automatically revert to the last mode
selected. The desired vehicle ride height can even be set with the
engine switched off by using the optional BMW Display Key.

patterns and generate a display reminiscent of a starlit sky. The
color scheme of this atmospheric light show can be adapted as desired.

Standard Driver Assist Systems

Offering a significantly expanded array of driver assistance systems,
the new BMW X7 is able to support the driver through an array of
interconnected sensors by processing camera images and data acquired
by radar.

The BMW X7 xDrive40i comes standard with Active Protection and Active
Driving Assistant including Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure
Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Frontal Collision Warning and
Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation (which now also
alerts the driver if cyclists are detected) Cross Traffic Alert Rear,
and Speed Limit Information.

The BMW X7 xDrive50i adds standard Parking Assistant Plus which
provides Top View, Panorama View and 3D View. The xDrive50i also
includes Head-Up Display and Active Driving Assistant Professional
with Active Lane Keeping Assistant and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant
for limited access highways.

Active Driving Assistant Professional: Comprehensive safety
and comfort

Standard on the X7 xDr50i and optional on the X7 xDrive40i, the
Driving Assistant Professional package is comprised of the Extended
Traffic Jam Assist for limited access highways as well as the Lane
Keeping Assistant with Active Side-Collision protection. Extended
Traffic Jam Assist supports the driver during one of the most tedious
driving situations, stop-and-go highway traffic. The system can be
used on limited access highways up to a speed of 37 mph and uses a
driver-facing optical/infrared camera located in the digital
instrument cluster to monitor the driver’s eye and nose position to
determine if they are monitoring the road ahead. As long as the driver
is found to be attentive to the road ahead, the need for the driver to
place their hands on the wheel every 30-50 seconds is not required.

This interior camera is also used to support the standard driver
alertness monitoring system which suggests that one stop and take a
relaxing break if it deems that the driver is becoming tired and less alert.

The Automatic Lane Change feature can be used on highways when the
Lane Keeping Assistant is active. Holding the direction indicator in
the required direction is all it takes to initiate a lane change. If
the sensors detect that there is space in the adjacent lane and that
no other vehicle is approaching at high speed, the driver benefits
from helpful steering assistance during the lane change.

Another component of the system is the Evasion Aid, which can help
avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians that appear suddenly in
the vehicle’s path. As soon as an evasive maneuver corresponding to
such a scenario is detected, the system assists the driver with
steering inputs to direct the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane.

The array of assistance systems contained in this wide-ranging suite
of safety and comfort features is composed of the Active Cruise
Control (ACC) with Stop & Go and Cross Traffic Alert Front which
reduces the risk of a collision when maneuvering forwards towards
crossing traffic where visibility is restricted. Also, changing speed
limits identified by the Speed Limit Info system can be used by the
Automatic Cruise Control system to match the vehicle’s cruise control
speed to the road’s posted speed limit.

Emergency Stop Assistant: Active assistance when needed

A new development in the field of safety systems is the Emergency
Stop Assistant, which is a component of the optional Driving Assistant
Professional package. Intended to be used in situations where the
driver is suddenly incapacitated because of a medical emergency, it is
activated by pulling the electric parking brake switch. Depending on
the driving situation and the vehicle’s surroundings, the Emergency
Stop Assistant will bring the vehicle to a standstill either in the
current lane, at the edge of the road or on the hard shoulder. At the
same time, the hazard warning lights are activated and the Intelligent
Emergency Call function automatically notifies the BMW Assist call
center so the emergency services can be alerted.

Parking Assistant Professional: For comfortable maneuvering
into parking spaces

The new BMW X7 is equipped with standard rear-view camera and Park
Distance Control (PDC), which includes sensors at the front and rear
of the vehicle.

The Parking Assistant Professional package, standard in the X7
xDrive50i, and optional in the X7 xDrive40i, enables automatic
selection and use of parallel parking spaces. These parking spaces are
detected by ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle passes them. The Parking
Assistant function is activated at the touch of a button on the center
console. The system then takes care of the acceleration, braking,
steering and gear changes necessary to maneuver into the space.

Back-Up Assistant: Unique, high-precision guidance in tight spaces

Back-Up Assistant offers an unmatched level of assistance when
leaving a parking space or maneuvering in a confined area. The Back-Up
Assistant takes over steering to maneuver the vehicle mirroring the
path most recently used in the forward direction. This system makes
reversing for a distance of up to 50 yards an effortless task in the
new 2019 BMW X7. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator
and brakes and monitor the surrounding area. The system is initiated
by pressing a button when the vehicle is stationary and the gear
selector is in the “P” position. The steering movements made during
the vehicle’s last forward maneuver are stored by the system and
retained. This means the Back-Up Assistant can be used to maneuver the
new BMW X7 backwards out of a parking position that it drove into
forwards the previous day.

The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the
standard rear-view camera and the optional Top View, Panorama View and
3D View which are part of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a
360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings in the Center
Display. In addition, drivers can use the Remote 3D View feature, part
of the BMW ConnectedDrive App, to access a three-dimensional live
image of their vehicle and surroundings on a smartphone no matter
where they are at that moment.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional: Seventh generation of BMW iDrive

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional, standard in the new 2019 BMW X7,
combines a new display and control concept and the ultimate in
connectivity to create a superb all-round package. The
latest-generation of the iDrive comprises a high-resolution digital
12.3” instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 12.3”
center display diagonally across. The system offers many hardware
upgrades including new haptic controls on the iDrive controller, an
advanced tablet-like touch interface, stunning visualizations, and the
largest displays available in a BMW. This latest system perfectly
blends the strengths of previous iDrive concepts with the modern ways
in which people interface with their popular electronic devices. The
multi-modal approach of the iDrive touch controller, large touchscreen
center display, cloud based voice control, and gesture control allow
users to interact in the way of their choosing.

The seventh incarnation of iDrive has a cutting-edge, fully-digital
design and is geared more closely to the driver’s needs by allowing
them to tailor the system to their own preferences with customizable
widgets of information. This new level of personalization is then
stored in the BMW cloud and can follow the customer to other BMW
vehicles. Information from categories such as driving, entertainment,
navigation, connectivity, and from the vehicle info itself, can be
selected in nearly any combination in any of four layouts on the
Center Display. Multiple pages can be created and easily accessed with
a simple swipe across the screen with a finger.

To maximize the capabilities of the large 12.3” digital instrument
cluster, the traditional circular gauges have evolved into an new
design that pushes the digital speedometer and tachometer gauges to
the outer edges of the display as geometric bands. This new design
opens space in the middle for routing and navigation. Information from
the center display can also be shown within the tachometer. The drive
mode selected via the Driver Experience Control also effects the
appearance of the instrument cluster.

Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the
Navigation Professional system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system
with 20 GB of memory and six USB ports, plus Bluetooth interfaces. The
driver can be automatically detected and personal settings activated
either using the traditional vehicle key or by downloading the
driver’s personal settings from the BMW Cloud.

Drivers can enjoy the full benefits of the car’s intelligent
connectivity capabilities through vehicle apps such as news, weather,
office and online search. Other capabilities include Intelligent
Emergency Call – which automatically summons swift assistance in an
emergency – and regular updates for the navigation system’s maps.

A collection of bundled digital services will be offered for the new
BMW X7 as the Connected Package Professional. The Connected Package
Professional provides Remote Services, Concierge Services, On-Street
Parking Information, and Real Time Traffic Information for the first 4
years of ownership. This package allows easy integration and
adaptation of new technology over time. Customers can continue to
download various new digital services individually as they become
available or renew existing services via the ConnectedDrive Store.

BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility

BMW Connected is the companion app for BMW drivers. Intelligent
connectivity helps users to reach their destination easily and with
minimal stress – and not only when in their car; BMW Connected is an
all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and
their smartphone with their vehicle.

At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows the
app to connect the car with the customer’s digital devices. These
could include the iPhone and Apple Watch, smartphones and smartwatches
running the Android operating system, Alexa-compatible smart devices
and Google Home. For instance, the BMW Connected app can import
appointments and addresses from the customer’s calendar entries
straight into the navigation system to begin route guidance. The
system calculates the optimum departure time based on real-time
traffic information and notifies the driver with a message on their
smartphone when it is time to leave. As the vehicle is linked up via
the Open Mobility Cloud, it is able to access the calculated route
directly when the navigation system starts up.

Audio and entertainment

The standard audio system in the BMW X7 xDrive40i features 10
speakers and 205 watts of power. A Harman Kardon Surround Sound Audio
is standard in the X7 xDrive50i, optional on the X7 xDrive40i.
Wireless Charging and WiFi Hotspot are standard for both models to
integrate your favorite personal mobile devices into the BMW X7
experience. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound is
available as an option for both X7 models offers amplification of
1,500 watts, powering 20 speakers.

The optional Rear-seat Entertainment Professional system adds a pair
of 10.2-inch full-HD touchscreen displays, a Blu-ray-compatible DVD
player and an HDMI socket and two headphone jacks. The system works
using the BMW iDrive 7 display and control system, and so allows those
in the rear of the vehicle to select and operate entertainment
functions. The rear-seat passengers can use both their own media
sources and those available in the front compartment. A navigation map
and BMW ConnectedDrive services can also be accessed in the rear seats.

Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight.

Both X7 models come with Adaptive Full LED lights with Automatic High
Beams as standard equipment. BMW Laserlights are available on the X7
xDrive50i with the optional Executive Package, which also includes
Panoramic Sly Lounge LED Roof and Glass Controls.

BMW Head-Up Display: Larger projection area and optimized graphics

The BMW Head-Up Display, optional for the xDrive40i and standard on
the xDrive50i, helps the driver to enjoy focused and extremely safe
driving in the new BMW X7. It projects driving-related information
directly into the driver’s field of vision on the windshield, where it
can be assimilated without the need to divert their eyes from the
road. The latest generation of the system boasts a larger projection
area then that of past systems plus enhanced graphics and additional
display readings. The information projected by the BMW Head-Up Display
includes the car’s speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions,
Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from the
assistance systems, detailed route guidance and turn instructions, and
telephone and entertainment lists.

Another feature activated in conjunction with the BMW Head-Up Display
is distance warning, which is part of the Active Cruise Control
system’s set of functions and flashes a graphic icon to alert the
driver when they get closer to the vehicle in front than the pre-set
minimum distance.

Displays and iDrive: Premier for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant

Making its debut in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is the BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital character that responds to
the prompt “Hey BMW”. The BMW Group is set to revolutionize driving
pleasure with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and, in so doing,
enter a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate
their car and access its functions and information simply by speaking.
The range of functions and skills available will be constantly
expanded as part of regular updates.

BMWs acquire a digital personality

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines and habits,
and is subsequently able to apply them in the appropriate context. He
helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with their
favored settings – e.g. for the seat heating or the places they drive
to frequently using the navigation system (“Take me home”). It is
familiar with the vehicle’s functions and is able to operate them as
required. Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car
accordingly. The assistant will benefit from technical upgrades and be
able to learn more and more preferences and favored settings. The
assistant takes further strides forward with every command given,
every question asked and every setting selected.

A constant on-board companion: the digital BMW expert

The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ensures there
is always a genuine BMW professional on board. He is able to explain
all sorts of different functions (“How does the High Beam Assistant
work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”)
and help answer questions (“What warning messages do I have?”). He
knows the driver’s favorite settings, and can even activate a
combination of them to enhance well-being. For instance, “Hey BMW, I
feel tired” triggers a vitality program that adjusts the lighting
mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the
driver feel more awake.

The perfect driver assistant

The Intelligent Personal Assistant is, in short, the ideal co-driver
and comes in particularly useful during everyday driving (“Hey BMW,
what is the closest gas station on my route”). To make navigation
particularly easy, drivers can give him access to their calendar and
contacts, which will enable him to find parking spaces at the
destination, provide information on traffic jams along the route and
remind the driver when they need to set off. It also learns
destinations the customer drives to frequently.

BMW Digital Key: turning the smartphone into a car key

The BMW Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology
to allow the new BMW X7 to be locked and unlocked from a compatible
smartphone, removing the need for a conventional car key. Holding the
smartphone up to the door handle opens the car. Once inside, the
engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the
wireless charging or smartphone tray. Accessible via the BMW Connected
app, the Digital Key offers unrivalled flexibility. The BMW Digital
Key is compatible for all NFC-capable Samsung Galaxy smartphones
running Android 8.0 and above. Compatibility is limited to select carriers.

Always up to date thanks to Remote Software Upgrade

The Remote Software Upgrade feature keeps the vehicle up to date with
the latest software. All updates can be loaded over the air, similar
to smartphones. The upgrades can be loaded onto a smartphone via the
BMW Connected app when connected to a domestic Wi-Fi network or
imported directly via the BMW’s built-in SIM card, which happens
automatically for important vehicle upgrades.

Munich. The Sports Activity Vehicle is heading for
the luxury segment. And on its way there it is undergoing a true
endurance test marathon. An equally extensive and diverse test
programme takes the camouflaged prototypes of the new BMW X7 across
challenging terrain all over the world. Earlier winter test drives on
snow and ice at the edge of the polar circle were followed by
long-distance endurance tests on desert and gravel tracks under the
South African sun. Hectic stop-and-go-traffic in the urban jungle
alternates with dynamic load tests on winding country roads and
highways. Under extreme challenges and a wide spectrum of weather and
road surface conditions the first luxury-segment BMW X model has
provided the ultimate proof of its supreme driving characteristics
within the framework of driving dynamics testing.

With its impressive appearance, exceptionally generous interior
space, sophisticated drive and suspension technology and exclusive
equipment features, the BMW X7 is the latest interpretation of
luxurious driving pleasure in the style of the Munich-based premium
brand. The combination of supreme off-road performance and superior
driving dynamics on the road so typical of a Sports Activity Vehicle
is entering a further vehicle segment. With the upcoming presentation
of the latest and also largest BMW X model at the end of 2018, BMW is
continuing its current product offensive in the luxury class with a
yet further fascinating vehicle concept. The increased presence in
this segment is one of the action fields which have been defined by
the BMW Group within the framework of its NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy.

The prototypes of the new BMW X7 were produced at the BMW Spartanburg
plant. The competence centre for BMW X models in the US Federal State
of South Carolina will also become the place of origin for the
production model. Despite conspicuous camouflaging, the preproduction
vehicles reveal the imposing dimensions as well as the both clear and
harmonious proportions of the BMW X7.

In the new BMW X7, luxury, diversity and sportiness combine to form a
unique entity. The current tests impressively demonstrate the driving
experience that can be enjoyed in the sophisticated ambience of the
vehicle’s interior even under adverse climatic conditions and on the
most varying terrain. At the Winter Test Centre in Arjeplog, Sweden,
during hot-climate tests, but also in everyday traffic situations
around the home town of Spartanburg, the prototypes of the new BMW X7
have already had ample opportunity to convince with contemporary
luxury and supreme diversity.

Press Contact: Oleg Satanovsky
Tel: +1-201-307-3755
E-mail: oleg.satanovsky@bmwna.com

Press Release,G07,X7,Product,BMW

is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet
a further member of the X family. Together with the BMW X7, a total of
five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four
corners of the globe.”

Camouflage wrap conceals final look.
At the plant, the
production of pre-series models serves to secure and optimise future
series production. Consequently, BMW X7 pre-production models already
use the same assembly line as the BMW X5 and BMW X6 production models.
An especially trained team realises the series production process for
new vehicle models at the plant and qualifies employees for future
series production.

The pre-production models built at the BMW Group Spartanburg plant
are handed over to development department specialists, who require
them for homologation, registration as well as for diverse testing
purposes such as endurance tests and test drives under extreme
conditions in the desert regions of Death Valley or on the ice and
snow covered slopes of Scandinavia.

The pre-production model is fitted with its camouflage wrap while
still at the plant. The conspicuous striped patterns are designed to
help conceal the new SAV’s final look as far as possible.

Fifth series from the BMW Group Spartanburg plant.
In Spartanburg, the BMW Group produces BMW X models for
the USA and the global market.
With record production figures of
more than 411,000 units in 2016, Spartanburg is currently the BMW
Group’s largest plant worldwide. Around 70 percent of the vehicles
produced in Spartanburg are exported to 140 countries throughout the
world. According to the US Ministry of Trade, the BMW Group is
therefore the largest vehicle exporter in the USA measured in export
value. Maximum annual production capacity stands at around 450,000 vehicles.

The BMW Group Spartanburg plant employs more than 9,000 people; a
further 1,000 jobs are to be added by the year 2021. Each day, 1,400
BMW X3, X4, X5 and X6 models come off the assembly line at the
Spartanburg plant; these will be complemented by a fifth series, the
BMW X7, for which the Spartanburg plant is currently preparing.

To date, the BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in the
production location and has built around 3.9 million vehicles since
being taken into operation on 8 September 1994.

*Due to the pre-series vehicle status, technical details like fuel
consumption, CO2 emissions, etc. will be communicated later next year.
