<p>
  <strong>Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 21, 2023…</strong> Dynamic
flair, a powerful presence, and modern luxury define the character of
  the new 2024 BMW X5 M Sports Activity Vehicle and 2024 X6 M Sports
Activity Coupe. The BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M will now be offered
exclusively as Competition models – with a new V8 engine with 48V
mild-hybrid technology delivering a maximum output of 617 hp, exterior
design updates, and the latest-generation iDrive control/operation
system, complete with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8.</p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition will make
their public debut at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in March,
and production will begin at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in April. The
competence center for BMW X models also hosts production of the BMW X3
M, the BMW X4 M and the BMW XM – the first high-performance vehicle
  from BMW M GmbH with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.</p>
<p>
<strong>The first high-performance models from BMW M GmbH to feature
    48V technology.</strong></p>
<p>With the latest generation of drivetrain technology for the new
BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition, BMW M GmbH is
forging ahead with electrification. In these new vehicles, 48V
mild-hybrid technology makes its debut with BMW M, enhancing a new V8
engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology. Together, the boost
provided by the electric motor and the high-revving character of the
V8 engine take the performance for which M cars are renowned to an
  even more compelling level.</p>
<p>The electric motor, complete with power electronics, is integrated
into the compact housing of the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and
delivers an additional up to 12 hp of output and 147 lb-ft of torque.
The result is a noticeably more rapid power delivery, enabling the
powertrain to respond to every movement of the accelerator. The surge
of power continues steadily into the upper reaches of the rev range.
For the driver, this means extremely spirited and assured performance,
both when accelerating off the line and during mid-range acceleration.
With the electric motor supporting the combustion engine under steady
loads, in many situations the engine can work within an optimum load
  window, thus increasing its efficiency.</p>
<p>The energy required for the additional electrical power is stored in
a 48V battery in the engine compartment. The battery is charged
through adaptive recuperation under braking and on the overrun, and
also supplies the electrical system with the recuperated energy. The
electric motor also works as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator.
This ensures the combustion engine sparks to life smoothly, something
  the driver will notice in the operation of Auto Start Stop function;
the 48V generator shuts off the engine with minimal vibration and
  starts it up again unobtrusively.</p>
<p>
<strong>New V8 engine with optimized power delivery and increased efficiency.</strong></p>
<p>The new S68 4.4-liter V8 engine in the 2024 BMW X5 M Competition and
X6 M Competition is notable for its sharper response and increased
efficiency compared to its predecessor. As well as a cross-bank
exhaust manifold, the engine now also features a reinforced crankshaft
drive, further developed turbocharging – mounted close to the exhaust
manifold and with an electrically controlled blow-off valve – plus a
new air intake duct, a new vane-type oil pump and a weight-optimized
  plastic oil sump.</p>
<p>A willingness to rev and seamless power delivery define the new V8
engine. It produces its peak torque of 553 lb-ft between 1,800 and
5,800 rpm and generates a maximum output of 617 hp at 6,000 rpm. The
new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition each accelerate
from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The top speed of both models is
electronically limited to 155 mph, or 177 mph with the optional M
  Driver’s Package.</p>
<p>The new V8 engine produces suitably dramatic sounds from the standard
M Sport exhaust system, which features dual-branch pipes with large
cross sections, high-capacity silencers, electrically controlled flaps
and two pairs of tailpipes with Black Chrome finishers positioned
either side of the rear apron in customary M fashion. New catalytic
converters also reduce the engine’s emissions.</p>
<p>
  <strong>New 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with integrated electric motor.</strong></p>
<p>In addition to the electric motor that has been incorporated for the
  48V mild-hybrid system, the updated 8-Speed M Steptronic gearbox
benefits from new gear ratios and a sharper shift action. The shorter
ratios in the first three gears are ideal for accelerating hard off
the line, while the transmission’s wider ratio spread increases the
drive system’s overall efficiency. Shift sharpness benefits greatly
from the transmission’s refined hydraulic control featuring a
  direct-acting pressure regulator valve.</p>
<p>The torque converter has been tuned to match the performance
characteristics of the new V8 engine. A new cast-aluminum oil sump
with cooling fins and increased capacity optimizes transmission
temperature control as well as helping to keep it supplied with
  lubricant under high lateral acceleration.</p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition are each fitted
with a hydraulically damped transmission mount which, like the two
engine mounts, has a very high spring rate. This results in a
noticeably more rigid connection between the entire drivetrain and the
body structure, enabling power from the entire drivetrain to be
deployed as directly as possible while enhancing handling by
  minimizing flex.</p>
<p>
<strong>Near-actuator wheel slip limitation: greater speed and
    precision. </strong></p>
<p>The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential at
the rear axle are responsible for applying the power of the new
TwinPower Turbo V8 to the road. Instead of just being interconnected
with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system as before, they now
work in tandem with near-actuator wheel slip limitation, ensuring
swift, precise reactions to changes in the driving situation.</p>
<p>Integrated into the engine management, this traction control system
makes corrective inputs up to ten times faster than conventional DSC
systems, and with exceptional precision. Because of the speed with
which the near-actuator wheel slip limitation responds to any loss of
traction, especially when accelerating hard or taking corners at
speed, the DSC system has to intervene far less frequently with
selective applications of the brakes at individual wheels to maintain
  composed and assured handling.</p>
<p>
<strong>Chassis. Precise wheel location, high body rigidity, refined
    suspension damping.</strong></p>
<p>The chassis design benefits from careful refinements to the
suspension to refine the linear build-up of lateral forces during the
sort of performance driving for which BMW M models are intended. The
double-wishbone front axle boasts excellent levels of longitudinal and
lateral rigidity, while a large shear panel and model-specific
underfloor struts help to deliver precise handling and sharp turn-in characteristics.</p>
<p>The five-link rear axle on the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M
Competition also includes components designed for extremely high
levels of torsional stiffness. The toe-in values at the rear axle have
been modified for greater poise at very high speeds. Body rigidity at
the rear of the vehicle has been further improved by measures such as
the addition of thrust arms and a tunnel bridge that is joined
  together above the exhaust pipes.</p>
<p>Reworked dampers are adjusted automatically based on sensor data
regarding body movement, road surface conditions, and steering inputs.
This data allows the damping forces for each individual wheel to be
smoothly adapted to the changing driving situation in just a few
milliseconds using electromagnetic valves. The basic damper setting
can be changed to suit preferences in the M Setup menu. Comfort mode
delivers impressive levels of long-distance comfort, while the Sport
setting activates a firmer setup for the body resulting in increased
grip and enhanced lateral performance. The damper settings in Sport
Plus mode are designed for highly dynamic driving situations.</p>
<p>
<strong>M Servotronic steering with new steering gear. </strong></p>
<p>A key part of the confidence-inspiring handling of the new BMW X5 M
Competition and BMW X6 M Competition is their M Servotronic steering
and its excellent directional accuracy and clear feedback. It combines
speed-sensitive power assistance and a variable steering ratio,
enabling it to deliver exactly the right amount of steering response
for the situation. The M Setup menu offers a choice of two settings
for either very sporty or more comfort-oriented steering response.</p>
<p>
  <strong>Latest-generation integrated braking system. </strong></p>
<p>The M Compound brakes fitted as standard on the new BMW X5 M
Competition and BMW X6 M Competition comprise six-piston,
fixed-caliper brakes with perforated discs measuring 15.6 inches in
diameter at the front and single-piston, floating caliper units with
15.0-inch discs at the rear. Besides the standard blue finish, the
calipers can also be specified in red or black.</p>
<p>The latest-generation integrated braking system featured in the new
BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition generates enormous
stopping power with consistent pedal feel. This system packages the
brake activation, brake booster, and braking control functions within
a single compact module. The required brake pressure is triggered
using an electric actuator, meaning braking requests from the driver
assistance systems are also translated into extremely short stopping
distances for increased active safety. The M-specific integrated
braking system presents the driver with two pedal feel settings,
allowing a choice between more comfort-oriented or very direct
execution of brake pedal inputs in the M Setup menu.</p>
<p>
<strong>Design. Slim headlights, new BMW kidney grille, and wide-open
    air intakes.</strong></p>
<p>The BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition present new
front-end designs based around crisp, expansive surfaces, resulting in
a look of modernity and muscularity in the current BMW design
language. In the middle of the front end, the BMW kidney grille and
central lower air intake form a single black area. This X-shaped
  element produces a dynamic, forward-oriented impression.</p>
<p>A model-specific spoiler lip – also in black – forms the lower edge
of the front apron on the new BMW X6 M Competition. It helps to
optimize the aerodynamic balance of the Sports Activity Coupe and
gives the X6 M Competition the appearance of sitting lower to the ground.</p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition each
receive an updated design of the signature BMW headlights and
twin-kidney grille. The outline of the new M Shadowline headlight
units is about an inch and a half narrower than on the outgoing
models. Their arrow-shaped elements point outwards and serve as
daytime running lights and turn signal indicators.</p>
<p>The BMW kidney grille is now all black in color and carries the
relevant model badging in an enlarged letter/number combination. Its
matte black surround creates a subtle contrast against the dark
surfaces around it. The lower air intake and both side air intakes are
also very open, enabling optimum inflow of cooling air for the
high-performance engine and braking system of the new BMW X5 M
  Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition.</p>
<p>
  <strong>New BMW X5 M Competition: rear lights with bold X graphic. </strong></p>
<p>Viewing the new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition in
profile highlights the distinctive proportions of each model and their
clear, modern design language. Like the surrounds for the BMW kidney
grille and air breathers, the exterior mirror caps and the model
badges at the rear are also finished in black as standard.</p>
<p>The L-shape familiar in the taillight designs from other BMW models
is reflected horizontally in the new rear lights on the BMW X5 M
Competition, creating an X motif. The vertical reflectors are now
integrated lower down in the rear apron, bringing the vehicle’s visual
center of gravity closer to the road.</p>
<p>On both models, a prominent diffuser insert extends downwards at the
lower edge of the rear apron. It also provides a sophisticated border
for the familiar pairs of twin exhaust tailpipes. The four tailpipe
trims are in Black Chrome and each measure 4 inches in diameter.</p>
<p>
<strong>New exterior paint finishes added to the range. </strong></p>
<p>The selection of paint colors for the new BMW X5 M Competition and
new BMW X6 M Competition now includes Brooklyn Grey metallic, Isle of
Man Green metallic, and Frozen Pure Grey metallic.</p>
<p>At launch, customers will be able to choose from around 50 BMW
Individual paint shades for both models. These include metallic and
non-metallic finishes, as well as Frozen finishes. These exclusive
paint options are applied in a meticulous process and the spectrum of
colors is being expanded all the time.</p>
<p>
<strong>Modern. Digital. M cockpit with BMW Curved Display.</strong></p>
<p>Digital innovations enrich the performance experience in the new
BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition, and create a fresh,
open, and contemporary interior design. At the heart of the design
updates for the interior is the BMW Curved Display, which gives the
M-typical cockpit a modern and expansive feel. The single glass
surface incorporating the information display and control display and
curved towards the driver takes a new approach to enhancing
concentration on the dynamic driving experience. The high-resolution
digital screen rests on the now slimmer instrument panel, which is
trimmed in leather as standard. Also newly designed are the central
air vents, which are now extremely narrow and integrated into the
instrument panel almost out of sight.</p>
<p>The broad, smoothly curving trim element below the BMW Curved Display
emphasizes the width of the instrument panel and therefore the
generous space of the interior. Carbon Fiber interior trim is
standard. Fineline Black wood trim and the new BMW Individual Silver
Ash Root Open Pore wood trim with Color Gradient are optional.</p>
<p>
<strong>Ambient light bar with configurable backlighting and alert
    function. </strong></p>
<p>Also new is the ambient light bar with crystalline surface structure
and LED featuring the M logo integrated below the trim element in the
front passenger area. The light bar brings another element to the
standard ambient lighting and features an alert function that can
signal an incoming telephone call with a dynamic chaser light. The
ambient lighting distribution, brightness, and color can be configured
  via the iDrive menu.</p>
<p>
<strong>Familiar M accents, seat surfaces in new colors, new carbon
    gearshift paddles. </strong></p>
<p>The standard M leather steering wheel in the new BMW X5 M Competition
and new BMW X6 M Competition frame newly designed gearshift paddles in
  carbon fiber.</p>
<p>The interiors of both vehicles are upholstered extended Merino
leather in a choice of two colors. Full Merino leather is available in
six colors including the new BMW Individual Ivory White/Atlas Grey combination.</p>
<p>
<strong>Expanded suite of assistance systems. </strong></p>
<p>The standard Parking Assistant Professional package now incorporates
both the Reversing Assistant and the advanced Maneuver Assistant. The
Reversing Assistant is able to store steering movements for distances
of up to 200 meters and then reproduce them in reverse. Drivers also
have the ability to control maneuvers into and out of especially tight
parking spaces from outside the vehicle using the My BMW App on their
smartphone (available for Apple iPhones running iOS 16.2 or later).
The Maneuver Assistant is capable of recording up to ten maneuvers at
different locations covering a distance of up to 200 meters each (with
a maximum total distance of 600 meters) and subsequently performing
them as an automated routine. The driver is able to control each
maneuver either from inside the vehicle or remotely using their Apple
iPhone while they monitor the vehicle’s surroundings.</p>
<p>
<strong>M Setup menu and M Mode for a customized performance experience.</strong></p>
<p>At the heart of the M-specific control/operation concept is the
M Setup menu. The Setup button located on the center console provides
direct access to the settings options for the engine, chassis,
steering, braking system and M xDrive. This enables the driver to
tailor every detail of the overall vehicle setup to the prevailing
driving situation and their individual preferences.</p>
<p>Two individually configured setup variants can be stored permanently,
together with the preferred settings for the engine note, the DSC
system, the Automatic Start/Stop function and the shift
characteristics of the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission. Either
configuration can then be selected by pressing one of the two M
buttons on the steering wheel. The driver’s preferred setups can be
saved and assigned to one of the two M buttons as soon as they have
been configured in the menu in the new BMW X5 Competition and BMW X6 M Competition.</p>
<p>The amount of content shown in the information display and M specific
BMW head-up display can also be individually tailored, as can the
level of driver assistance system functionality. After pressing the M
Mode button on the center console, drivers are able to activate the
desired setting with a touch of the control display. Besides the
default ROAD setting and SPORT mode, they are also offered the choice
of TRACK mode as standard in the new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M
Competition. This last mode fully deactivates the assistance systems
at the same time as switching to a reduced selection of readouts
  focused purely on driving-related information.</p>
<p>
<strong>Digital advances with new BMW iDrive, BMW Curved Display, and
    BMW Operating System 8.</strong></p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition come as
standard with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which brings with it an
M-specific version of the latest-generation BMW iDrive interface.
Powered by BMW Operating System 8, it comprises a BMW Curved Display
formed by a 12.3-inch information display and a control display with a
screen diagonal of 14.9 inches. The new display grouping and the
continually expanding capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal
Assistant mean the new BMW iDrive has been deliberately geared towards
  touch control and natural speech.</p>
<p>M‑specific content, including the familiar Shift Lights, appears in
both the BMW Curved Display and the BMW head-up display.</p>
<p>The standard BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to lock and
unlock their X5 M Competition or X6 M Competition via
  security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology from a
compatible smartphone running either the iOS or Android operating
system. A conventional car key is no longer required. Simply
approaching the car or walking away triggers the unlocking or locking
process; there is no need for the customer to even remove their
  smartphone from their pocket.</p>
<p>The BMW Digital Key Plus can be set up using the My BMW App. The car
owner can also share it – and therefore access to the vehicle – with
up to five other users who have a smartphone with either iOS or Android.</p>

  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>
  <strong>Woodcliff Lake, NJ – October 1, 2019…</strong>Today, BMW
introduces the new, 3rd generation of the M GmbH brand’s
  exclusive, track-capable X5 and X6 based vehicles, the X5 M Sports
Activity Vehicle and X6 M Sports Activity Coupe. The newest M SAV and
SAC vehicles offer more power and performance, improved luxury and
comfort over the vehicles that they are replacing while also featuring
the latest in driver assistance, personal connectivity and infotainment.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Since the introduction of the M1 in 1978, the engineers at BMW M have
been driven by a single-minded passion for combining authentic
motorsport functionality with everyday usability. Each M car must
fulfill the highest customer expectations, not only for agility,
dynamics and power but also the expression of individuality.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
  <strong>M Power and Performance</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>Power in the new X5 M and X6 M comes from the high-revving,
  twin-turbocharged S63 V8 engine generating 600 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 553
  lb-ft @ 1,800 – 5,690 rpm. This is an increase of 33 hp and 1,090 rpm
wider full torque range than the outgoing 2nd generation
models. The Competition models produce an increased 617 hp and 553
  lb-ft @ 1,800 – 5,860 rpm. Working with the M Steptronic eight-speed
automatic transmission with Drivelogic, the M xDrive all-wheel drive
system with Active M differential, the power and traction allows the
  X5 M and X6 M to sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds
(3.7 seconds for the Competition models). Top speed is electronically
limited to 155 mph, which increases to 177 mph with the optional M
Driver’s Package which also includes an invitation for driver training
at BMW’s Performance Center East (in Greer, SC) or West (in Thermal,
  CA) Driving Schools.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The BMW S63 TwinPower turbocharged eight-cylinder engine features
  indirect, highly-efficient liquid-to-air intercooling, a cross-bank
exhaust manifold to improve gas-flow out of the cylinders and into the
turbochargers, direct injection operating at 5,076 psi and VALVETRONIC
variable-valve timing. The block is of a closed-deck design with
sleeveless cylinder walls and a forged crankshaft.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>A dual-branch exhaust system, designed specifically for the X5 M and
X6 M offers an enticing sound emanating from the pair of 100 mm
tailpipes with electrically controlled flaps. The exhaust note can be
softened or increased via the M Sound Control button in the center
console. The Competition models’ note is further enhanced with a
standard M Sport Exhaust system which provides for a more sporty sound
to match the models’ increased capabilities.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The cooling system in the new X5 M, X6 M and Competition models is
designed to handle the highest demands which may be placed upon the
vehicle by the driver or environment. A central front radiator is
joined by a secondary cooler in the front, passenger-side wheel
opening. Liquid cooling is available for the engine oil, transmission
oil and turbochargers. A secondary oil sump is installed for when
lateral or longitudinal forces place extra demands on the engine oil supply.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The engine mounts are of a stiffer design and help improve both
engine response and the transfer of power through the transmission and
M xDrive system while also providing sharper turn in from the chassis.  </p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>
  <strong> M Steptronic Automatic Transmission with Drivelogic</strong></p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission offers both automatic and
manual shift modes with three selectable levels of programming
controlling shift speed and sharpness. M shift paddles allow for quick
manual shifting without removing your hands from the wheel.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Intelligent connectivity allows the M Steptronic to adapt its shift
strategy according to the route and driving situation by working with
the standard Navigation System and if equipped, combining this data
with information from the Active Cruise Control system’s radar sensor.
This makes it possible for the transmission to shift proactively
instead of reactively insuring that the X5 M and X6 M are always in
the correct gear for the upcoming road conditions.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
  <strong>M xDrive all-wheel drive with Active M Differential</strong></p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>The M xDrive system has been engineered to handle the full transfer
of 553 lb-ft of torque from a low 1,800 rpm and to work with the
chassis to provide the X5 M and X6 M with class-leading traction and
handling capabilities in dry and slippery road conditions as well as
during the increased demands of track driving.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch quickly, precisely
and smoothly transfers the power between the front and rear axles
while the Active M Differential further divides the power between the
two rear wheels as conditions dictate.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The rear-bias of the M xDrive system normally sends power to the rear
wheels to produce the kind of handling characteristics for which M
cars are known for. Only when additional traction is required is power
  directed to the front axle.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The M xDrive and Active M Differential are linked with the DSC
(Dynamic Stability Control) which is tuned to intervene only in
  extreme situations.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Drivers can also select from several all-wheel drive modes to tailor
the experience to their liking. The default 4WD setting offers,
excellent handling with maximum traction while the 4WD Sport setting
brings an increased proportion of torque transfer to the rear wheels
for a substantial increase in vehicle agility during spirited driving.</p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>
  <strong>Chassis and Suspension</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>The chassis and suspension components and settings were painstakingly
tested and refined in places such as Mirimas in the south of France,
Arjeplog in the north of Sweden and the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife in
Germany to produce the very best combination of every-day, year-round
usability and genuine track capable levels of performance.</p>
<p>Agility is the cornerstone of the new X5 M and X6 M vehicles’
wide-ranging capabilities and is imparted by carefully tuned
suspension components, extra chassis bracing, stiff engine and
suspension mounting points and increased front camber. The front
suspension features a double-wishbone setup with forged upper control
arms while the rear suspension is a five-link design.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Each of the four models, X5 M, X6 M, X5 M Competition and X6 M
Competition, features suspension tuning that delivers predictable and
linear responses imparting confidence to the driver over varied road
conditions.. Further attention to detail can be seen, under the hood,
in the form of a special bracing package connecting the front bulkhead
with the strut towers, enhancing both visuals and structural rigidity.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The Adaptive M suspension Professional with Active Roll Stabilization
is standard on all four new M models and has been engineered top
provide excellent handling and comfort in varied conditions, from
comfort to very sporty driving. Data from body movement, road surface
conditions and steering movements is collected from sensors and is
used to actively adjust the damper and stabilization bar settings in
milliseconds. The driver can select, with a press of the “setup”
button, from several chassis settings including COMFORT, SPORT and
  SPORT PLUS.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
  <strong>M Servotronic Steering</strong></p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>The M Servotronic speed-sensitive, variable ratio steering is tuned
to give just the right amount of feedback and excellent directional
accuracy. The ratio adjusts to changes in steering angle, ensuring
that turn in response is quick while straight-line directional
stability is excellent and low speed maneuvering such as in and out of
parking spots is enhanced. There are two selectable settings for
steering response and feedback, one comfort-oriented and one sport-oriented.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>M Compound Brakes, Wheels and Tires</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M and X6 M models feature BMW M’s latest integrated
braking system with all featured controlled by a single compact
module. An electric actuator builds up both brake pressure and
maintains an even brake pedal feel. The M version of the integrated
braking system allows for two pedal feel settings; Comfort and Sport
to offer the driver the opportunity to select the level of response
and feel to match their driving style and conditions.</p>
<p>The M compound brakes feature large drilled and vented 395 mm front
disks with fixed six-piston calipers and 380 mm rear disks with
  single-piston floating calipers.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The new X5 M and X6 M vehicles come standard with 21-inch M
  light-alloy Double-Spoke bi-color Style 808M  wheels with 295/35ZR21
front and 315/35ZR21 rear non run-flat performance tires.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Available as an upgrade option on the X5 M and X6 M, and no charge
option on the Competition Models, is a staggered 21-inch front and
  22-inch rear wheel/tire combination featuring M Star-Spoke bi-color
wheels Style 809M . Exclusive and standard on the Competition models
is a similar staggered 21 inch front /22 inch rear wheel, Style 818M.
Both styles of wheel come with Non run-flat performance tires sized
  295/35ZR21 front and 315/30ZR22 rear.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>A space-saver spare is standard but can be replaced by a mobility kit
  as an alternate choice.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
  <strong>Exterior Design</strong></p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>The new X5 M, X6 M and Competition models are immediately
recognizable by the large front bumper air intake openings to feed
additional air to the coolers. M specific BMW kidney grilles with
black double-bars, M gills on the front fenders, aerodynamic side
mirrors, flared wheel arches in body color and rear diffuser with
integrated quad exhaust are some of the other features unique to M
models. On the Competition models, the kidney grille surrounds,
exterior mirror caps, model badging, rear diffuser trim and exhaust
  tailpipes are finished in Black.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The X5 M and X5 M Competition feature a rear roof spoiler while the
X6 M and X6 M Competition feature both a roof and lower tailgate
spoiler as part of their aerodynamic enhancements.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Available exterior paint choices for all X5 M, X6 M and Competition
models include: Alpine White, Carbon Black Metallic, Black Sapphire
Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, Marina Bay Blue Metallic, Donnington
Grey Metallic, Manhattan Green Metallic and Tornado Red Metallic.
Additionally available are BMW Individual colors in Tanzanite Blue II
  Metallic and Ametrin Metallic.</p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>
  <strong>Interior Appointments</strong></p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>The passenger cabin of the X5 M, X6 M and Competition models have
been enhanced with unique features to set them apart in both comfort
and exclusivity. Splashes of red color adorn the M control buttons on
the center console, on the M Leather steering wheel and on the M
Leather gearshift lever. Additionally, Red, Blue and White BMW M color
stitching is visible on the steering wheel and gearshift lever. The
center console on the X6 M Competition and X5 M Competition features
additional knee padding on the sides</p>
<p> </p>

Sakhir Orange/Black, Adelaide Grey, Taruma Brown, Black or Ivory
White/Night Blue with color matched Alcantara headliner. The
Competition models also include a no-cost choice of a Black Full
Merino Leather interior with Midrand Beige Alcantara Cloth.  </p>
<p> </p>
<p>
  <strong>Displays and Infotainment with M Views</strong></p>
<p> </p>
<p>The BMW X5 M and X6 M models are equipped with BMW Live Cockpit
Professional running the latest iDrive 7 operating system as standard.
This comprehensive suite of integrated connectivity, control and
display systems offers the driver and passengers a superb all-round
package for interacting with their new X5 M and X6 M vehicle. The
latest-generation of the iDrive is composed of a high-resolution
digital 12.3” instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and
a 12.3” center display. The system offers many hardware upgrades from
iDrive 6, including new haptic controls for the iDrive controller, an
advanced tablet-like touch interface, stunning visualizations, and the
largest displays in BMW’s vehicle lineup.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The M View mode on the X5 M, X6 M and Competition models gives the
choice of ROAD and SPORT settings for delivering information via the
instrument cluster and Head-Up display. M View features a prominent
rev counter in the center of the Head-Up display area with shift
lights and locations for two widgets. These widget areas can display
G-Meter, Tire Pressure and Temperature or Engine Coolant Temperature
  and Boost Pressure.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The Competition models add a TRACK setting which is designed to be
used exclusively on closed circuits. Turning on the TRACK setting
reduces the amount of information available on the displays and
reduces the intervention of driver assistance systems, such as active
braking and steering to a bare minimum or turns them off altogether.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The seventh generation of iDrive, which runs the latest BMW Operating
System, has a cutting-edge, fully digital design and is geared to the
driver’s needs by allowing him or her to customize the system to his
or her own preference with customizable widgets of information. This
new level of personalization is then stored in the BMW Cloud and can
follow the customer to other BMW vehicles. Information from categories
such as driving, entertainment, navigation, connectivity, and the
vehicle info itself, can be selected in nearly any combination in any
of four layouts on the Center Display. Multiple pages can be created
and easily accessed with a simple swipe across the screen with your finger.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>To maximize the capabilities of the large 12.3” digital instrument
cluster, the traditional gauges have been finessed into an all-new
design pushing the speedometer and tachometer gauges to the outer
edges of the display as geometric bands. This new design opens space
in the middle for routing and navigation. Information from the center
display can also be shown within the tachometer. Additionally, your
driving mode will determine your visual display style. </p>
<p>Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the
Navigation Professional system, two USB-C ports, plus Bluetooth
interfaces. The driver can be automatically detected and personal
settings activated either using the traditional vehicle key or by
downloading the driver’s personal settings the BMW Cloud.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Drivers can enjoy the full benefits of the car’s intelligent
connectivity capabilities through vehicle apps such as news, weather,
office and online search. Other capabilities include Intelligent
Emergency Call – which automatically summons swift assistance in an
emergency – and regular updates for the navigation system’s maps.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The latest generation of the BMW Head-Up display system, standard in
  the X5 M and X6 M, features a larger projection area, optimized
graphics and additional content. The BMW Head-Up Display projects
information directly into the driver’s field of vision where it can be
viewed without any need for them to divert their eyes from the road.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
  <strong>Driver Assistance Systems</strong></p>
<p>
  <strong> </strong></p>
<p>The 2020 BMW X5 M and X6 M vehicles are available with a wide variety
of standard and optional driver assistance systems. The systems really
come into their own when driving longer distances by relieving the
strain on the driver in monotonous situations, such as traffic jams or
slow-moving traffic. They enhance comfort and safety both in urban
traffic and on longer trips by providing targeted assistance in
complex traffic situations. The driver assistance systems process
camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar
sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, to warn of potential
hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective
  braking or steering inputs.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The standard Active Driving Assistant on the new BMW X5 M and X6 M
includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision
Warning, Frontal Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City
Collision Mitigation (which now also alerts the driver if cyclists are
detected) Cross Traffic Alert Rear, and Speed Limit Information.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The optional Driving Assistance Professional Package offers
comprehensive assistance for comfortable and safe driving. This
package includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. It
can be used at speeds up to 130 mph and maintains the desired speed
while taking not only the traffic situation into account, but also the
selected distance to vehicles in front. If required, the system is
able to brake the car to a stop then pull away again automatically
after being stationary for up to 30 seconds, meaning greater comfort
in stop-start traffic. Camera images and data from a front radar
system are used for distance control.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Another component of the Driving Assistance Professional Package is
the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection. This
system is designed to help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the
correct path with an active turn of the steering wheel. Besides
emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to
vibrate, active side collision protection also uses active steering
intervention to help avoid a collision. Moreover, this package
includes Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways,
which allows for even more relaxed driving at speeds lower than 40 mph
during highly congested highway traffic situations. The Driving
Assistance Professional Package includes Evasion Aid, which now also
reacts to pedestrians and Front Cross Traffic Alert – which reduces
the danger of a collision when manoeuvring forwards towards roads that
are obstructed from the driver’s view.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Back-Up Assistant, part of the standard Parking Assistance Plus
Package, offers an unmatched level of assistance when leaving a
parking space or maneuvering in a confined area. The Back-Up Assistant
takes over steering to maneuver the vehicle mirroring the path most
recently used in the forward direction. This system makes reversing
for a distance of up to 50 yards an effortless task in your new X5 M
or X6 M. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and
brakes and monitor the surrounding area. The steering movements made
during the vehicle’s last forward maneuver are stored by the system
and retained. This means the Back-Up Assistant can be used to maneuver
the new BMW X5 M or X6 M backwards out of a parking position that it
drove into forwards the previous day.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the
standard rear-view camera and the optional Top View, Panorama View and
3D View which are part of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a
360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings in the Center
Display. In addition, drivers can use the Remote 3D View feature, part
of the BMW ConnectedDrive App, to access a three-dimensional live
image of their vehicle and surroundings on a smartphone no matter
where they are at that moment.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>BMW Connected is the companion app for BMW drivers. Intelligent
connectivity helps users to reach their destination easily and with
minimal stress – and not only from within their car; BMW Connected is
an all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and
  their smartphone with their vehicle.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows the
app to connect the car with the customer’s digital devices. These
could include the iPhone and Apple Watch, smartphones and smartwatches
running the Android operating system, Alexa-compatible smart devices
and Google Home. For instance, the BMW Connected app can import
appointments and addresses from the customer’s calendar entries
straight into the navigation system to begin route guidance. The
system calculates the optimum departure time based on real-time
traffic information and notifies the driver with a message on their
smartphone when it is time to leave. As the vehicle is linked up via
the Open Mobility Cloud, it is able to access the calculated route
directly when the navigation system starts up.</p>

  <strong>Woodcliff Lake, N.J.</strong>
  <strong>October 29, 2014 7:00pm EDT/4:00pm PDT…</strong>The new
BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M see BMW M GmbH setting the pace once again
in the high-performance Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports
Activity Coupe (SAC) segment. When the previous generation of the two
vehicles arrived in 2009, it was the first time the high-performance
character distilled by BMW M GmbH had been transplanted into an
all-wheel-drive BMW X model. The result was class-leading dynamics.
The new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M pull no punches in writing the next
chapter in this success story with another significant step forward in
dynamic excellence, distinct M design and outstanding efficiency. The
  2015 BMW X5 M will be offered at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail
Price of $99,650 and the 2015 BMW X6 M will start at $103,050,
including $950 Destination and Handling, both models will arrive in US
showrooms in the Spring of 2015.</p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M combine the characteristic features
of the successful BMW X family – exclusivity, robustness, agility and
everyday usability – with the commitment to high performance that
defines an M vehicle. The latter is resoundingly highlighted by the
vehicles’ impressive performance figures. Both models complete the
sprint from 0 to 60 mph in  4.0 seconds in conjunction with the new
  eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.</p>
<p>Innovative engine technology. <br />The new M TwinPower Turbo V8 for
the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M is the most powerful engine ever developed
by BMW for an all-wheel-drive vehicle. Boasting innovative M TwinPower
Turbo technology with a pair of TwinScroll turbochargers, cross-bank
exhaust manifolds, VALVETRONIC and High Precision Direct Injection,
the 4.4-liter V8 produces maximum output of 567 hp between 6,000 and
6,500 rpm. That represents a 3 percent increase over the predecessor
models. The step up is even clearer when it comes to the power
development of the new engine. Peak torque has been boosted by 53
lb-ft which equates to a rise of 10 percent. Its 553 lb-ft can be
enjoyed across a broad rev range between 2,200 and 5,000 rpm.</p>
<p>At the same time, fuel consumption of the new BMW X5 M and
BMW X6 M in the European cycle (official EPA values will be available
closer to the start of sales) has been cut by 20 percent, CO2
emissions are likewise down by more than 20 percent, to 258 g/km. The
two models accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds through the
standard eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Top
  speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).</p>
<p>Powerful looks and exclusive equipment.<br />With their striking use
of forms, the looks of the new BMW X5 M and  BMW X6 M foretell their
performance potential. With their exteriors painted fully in body
color, both models cut a low-slung figure on the road, while mixed
tires showcase their sporty track width. Additional exterior design
modifications, moreover, elevate the M models even further than before
from the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6. Large air intakes at the front
end, side gills with a model badge and Air Breathers, signature M
  exterior mirrors in twin-stalk style, a typically M four-tailpipe
exhaust system and a rear spoiler (for the BMW X6 M) give them a
standalone look M fans will immediately recognize. Setting the seal on
this exclusive range of features are standard M-specific, forged
  21-inch M light-alloy wheels.</p>
<p>The high-quality interior impresses with its well-thought-through
combination of sporty features, exclusive materials and flawless
workmanship. The M instrument cluster, M leather steering wheel with
aluminum gearshift paddles and M gearshift lever – which works in the
same way as the familiar M Double Clutch Transmission gearshift lever
  – are complemented by electrically operated M multi-function seats for
the driver and front passenger, an M driver’s footrest and the
optional Head-Up Display which, in addition to the standard
information, also includes an M-specific display with gear indicator,
  rev band and shift lights.</p>
<p>New BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M customers also have the choice between
various options exclusive to the M models, such as Merino full-leather
trim. And there’s also a choice of two new and exclusive M paint
finishes – Long Beach Blue Metallic and Donington Grey Metallic.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>A finely balanced overall concept.</p>
<p>At BMW M GmbH, high performance is about more than engine output and
top speeds alone. Here, high performance means all of a vehicle’s
components working in perfect harmony and the precise interplay of
various details resulting in maximum performance, agility, precision,
poise and assurance out on the road. This sense of balance is a
defining feature of all the vehicles produced by BMW M GmbH and is,
needless to say, also present in the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M.</p>
<p>Function-led design.<br />The function-led design of the new BMW X5 M
and new BMW X6 M is immediately clear with athletic, muscular looks
betraying their high-performance credentials before they so much as
turn a wheel. The four large air intakes and flaps at the front end,
and the diffuser at the rear, are fully functional, they are an
essential part of the engineers’ drive to optimize aerodynamics and
  ensure efficient cooling.</p>
<p>Thanks to a clever aerodynamics concept, the airflow is guided so
efficiently around the vehicle that drag is minimized and lift is also
reduced. The engine, powertrain and brakes are all kept sufficiently
cool, even when placed under extreme loads on the track. Elements
which look like pure design accents when they first catch the eye, in
fact, fulfill functional tasks. For example, the M-specific Air
Breathers behind the front wheels reduce turbulence in the front wheel arches.</p>
<p>Optimum temperature management.<br />The high-performance engine
under the hood of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M requires a
high-performance cooling system in order to guarantee the optimum
operating temperature in all conditions – i.e. normal everyday
driving, stop-start traffic and extreme action on the race track. A
highly efficient, newly developed combination of low-temperature and
high-temperature radiators, which also handles the cooling of the
turbochargers, charge air and transmission oil, maintains an optimum
temperature, even with all components working flat out.</p>
<p>New Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.<br />The
new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M send their engine power to the wheels
via the newly developed eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with
Drivelogic, which closely follows the operating philosophy of the
M Double Clutch Transmission used by other M models. With its
instantaneous responses, rapid gear changes and direct reaction to
load changes, the torque converter automatic transmission links up
seamlessly with the new higher-torque turbocharged engine and
showcases its talents. At the same time, its wider ratio spread allows
it to offer a clear drop in fuel consumption over the six-speed
transmission offered in the previous generation, as well as an
increase in driving comfort and improved performance.</p>
<p>The new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission allows drivers to sit
back and enjoy automatic shifts or change gear manually using the
gearshift paddles on the M leather steering wheel. And for the perfect
getaway, the driver can activate the Launch Control system adapted
from use in racing vehicles. Here, the driver keeps their foot on the
brakes and pushes the accelerator down almost to the floor, which
prompts the system to dial in the ideal getaway rpm. Releasing the
brakes prompts Launch Control to let the vehicle off the leash, and it
accelerates off the line with maximum propulsion.</p>
<p>The driver can also use the three-stage Drivelogic function to choose
whether to prioritize fuel economy, comfort or Sport performance. This
functionality is available both in automatic and manual shifting modes.</p>
<p>Intelligent all-wheel drive. <br />BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel
drive and Dynamic Performance Control play a key role in the
outstanding dynamics of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M. The xDrive
system employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to
allow fully variable distribution of drive between the front and rear
axles – from 100 percent at the rear to up to 100 percent at the
front. This ensures the best possible traction in all road conditions.
In the interests of greater agility, xDrive normally operates with a
  rear-biased torque split-in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M.</p>
<p>Dynamic Performance Control oversees the continuous distribution of
torque between the rear wheels – both under load and on the overrun –
regardless of engine output. Working in combination with the xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, the result is a whole new bracket of dynamic
flair, agility and traction. The vehicle follows the course set by the
driver far more accurately, whatever the road surface, and the system
also reduces the amount of wheel work required of the driver: the
steering responds more directly and far fewer corrections are
necessary. Moreover, the inherent propensity of conventional
all-wheel-drive vehicles to understeer is eliminated. An improvement
in traction is also impressively noticeable (on road surfaces with
differing friction levels, in particular), and active safety is
markedly enhanced as a result. The driver can see how Dynamic
Performance Control is operating on the display, with arrows at all
four wheels visualizing where the engine power is currently being sent.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>An open door to controlled drifts.<br />Among the other highlights of
the overall concept behind the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M is
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The control functions of DSC have
been Optimized over previous versions of the system to improve driving
dynamics further still. The extra functions which have become part of
DSC enhance active safety (Brake Standby, Brake Drying, Fading
Compensation) and comfort (Start-Off Assistant, parking brake with
  automatic hold function).</p>
<p>Dynamic Stability Control allows the driver to choose from three
modes: DSC on, MDM (M Dynamic Mode), DSC off. While DSC on counteracts
understeer and oversteer to great effect with selective brake
activation and torque reductions, MDM allows greater wheel slip – to
give keen drivers the chance to execute some mild drifts. However, the
driver aids will also intervene to assist the driver in this mode if a
predefined limit is exceeded. Deactivating DSC (through DSC off) gives
the driver the chance to fully explore the vehicle’s limits on the
track and nudge the vehicle into power oversteer (i.e. a drift) using
the accelerator. In this mode, the system will only intervene in
extreme situations involving significant shifts in lateral acceleration.</p>
<p>The new M TwinPower Turbo engine. A V8 with even more torque, backed
  by an emotionally rich soundtrack.</p>
<p>To say the newly developed engine of the new BMW X5 M and new
BMW X6 M has a pounding heartbeat would be something of an
understatement. After all, the 4.4-liter V8 uses innovative
M TwinPower Turbo technology – consisting of cross-bank exhaust
manifolds, a pair of TwinScroll turbochargers, High Precision Direct
Injection and VALVETRONIC – to push torque and output to higher levels
still. This unrivalled combination ensures that a strong wave of
torque is maintained from low revs and allows direct and rapid
responses, linear power delivery and customary M soundtrack.</p>
<p>Maximum performance meets outstanding efficiency. <br />The peak
output of the new M turbocharged engine powering the BMW X5 M and
BMW X6 M is, at 567 hp, three percent higher than that of its
predecessor and is available between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm. At the same
time, the engine’s peak torque has been boosted by around 10 percent
to 553 lb-ft, which can be enjoyed across an extremely broad rev band
  – from 2,200 to 5,000 rpm. The extraordinary power development of this
M turbocharged engine allows the new M versions of the BMW X5 and
BMW X6 to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 4.0 seconds. The top speed
of both is electronically limited to 155 mph.</p>
<p>The outstanding efficiency of the new M TwinPower Turbo engine is
illustrated by its 20 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions in
the in the European cycle (official EPA values will be available
closer to the start of sales) compared to its predecessor. All of
which means that the range of the two vehicles on a single,
identically sized tank of fuel has increased by 26 percent to 475
miles) in each case (European cycle).</p>
<p>Optimized responses. <br />The turbocharged V8 engine fitted in the
BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M delivers impressive performance with
lightning-fast responsiveness.  The key factors here are the engine’s
High Precision Direct Injection (2900 psi injection pressure),
state-of-the-art VALVETRONIC system and cross-bank exhaust manifolds,
which send two converged exhaust gas streams to drive the two
TwinScroll turbochargers through four separate exhaust ducts.</p>
<p>The new engine features a closed-deck crankcase with an extremely
rigid construction. This enables higher cylinder pressures to be
achieved, paving the way for improved power output. A forged,
torsionally stiff crankshaft is used to transfer the impressive
torque, its low weight contributing to a significant reduction in
rotating masses and thus a further sharpening of the engine’s responses.</p>
<p>From race track to road. <br />In the development of every model at
BMW M GmbH, a familiar maxim applies: it must be “fit for the
Nordschleife”. The aim in the development of BMW M cars is to master
the world’s most challenging race track at race speed without a hitch.
The extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration generated when
lapping the Ring places huge demands on the engine’s oil supply. But
sophisticated oil sump and suction snorkel geometry allows the new
  BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M to safely operate up to 1.2 g lateral acceleration.</p>
<p>The cooling systems for the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M are similarly
track-ready, as highlighted the first time you set eyes on the
vehicles by the large air intakes in the front end. A combination of
low-temperature and high-temperature radiators ensures that the
optimum temperature is maintained for engine cooling fluid, charge
air, engine oil and transmission oil – even when venturing into
  high-performance territory.</p>
<p>The exhaust system has been modified to satisfy the sporting
ambitions of the new M models. A distinctively familiar BMW M engine
note resonates out across the whole rev range via electrically
controlled flaps, which open or close according to demand, and sounds
even sportier and richer than that of its predecessor. Selecting one
of the preconfigured driving modes, moreover, engages a finely
balanced set-up that also provides acoustic feedback on the engine
  load at any one time.</p>
<p>The chassis. Hitting the heights of agility, precision, poise and assurance.</p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M once again set the pace in the
high-performance Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupe
segments thanks to extensive chassis upgrades. These combine to
provide outstanding performance together with unbeatable directional
stability and excellent traction, along with the type of neutral
self-steering typical of M vehicles, in particular when accelerating
out of corners and approaching with the dynamic limits.</p>
<p>To this end, the double-wishbone front suspension features revised
kinematics. A modified upper wishbone (increase in camber, optimized
camber progression and steering pivot axis) allows a further increase
in cornering force potential and agility. At the same time, M-specific
elastokinematics with more rigid bearings improve wheel guidance and
therefore directional stability – both at the front suspension as well
as  the Integral-IV rear suspension (an independent suspension system
with anti-squat and anti-dive geometry). Firmer suspension spring
tuning and a 10-milimeter drop in ride height team up with the Active
Roll Stabilization to bring about an effective reduction in body roll,
pitch and yaw. In addition, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come standard
with self levelling rear air suspension. Dynamic Damper Control with
electronically adjustable dampers – the driver can select from three
modes (COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+) at the touch of a button – ensures
the perfect balance between dynamic flair and ride comfort.</p>
<p>Mixed tires for optimized handling. <br />Another central element in
the driving characteristics of the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M are the
special tires, whose development closely followed that of the front
and rear axle design. In the high-performance segment, tire choice for
the front axle focuses – alongside lateral stability and brake forces
  – primarily on steering precision and feel. By contrast, the
engineers’ attention in the development of the rear tires centerd on
traction, lateral stability and directional stability. In order to
meet these part-contradictory, part- complementary demands, the
BMW M GmbH engineers have developed two sets of mixed tires for the
new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M. The interconnected development of
tires, steering and axles endows the new vehicles with assured
handling properties and good rolling comfort. Both models are fitted
standard with low-weight non-runflat 21-inch forged wheels (front:
  10 J x 21, rear: 11.5 J x 21) shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport UHP
  tires (front: 285/35 R21 Y, rear: 325/30 R21 Y).</p>
<p>M Servotronic steering with individual adjustment. <br />One of the
most important interfaces between driver and vehicle is the steering.
Here, BMW M GmbH’s high-performance models have set the benchmark from
day one when it comes to providing a direct steering feel, precise
feedback on the driving conditions and a finely-tuned balance when
exploring the dynamic limits. Continuing this tradition, the
M Servotronic steering in the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M comprises
M-specific gear ratios and an intelligently composed overall set-up.
This rack-and-pinion system with electric power assistance uses no
energy when the vehicle is travelling straight ahead. The Servotronic
function familiar from hydraulic systems, which controls the degree of
steering assistance according to the vehicle’s speed, is another
integral element. Furthermore, drivers can choose from three steering
settings (COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+) – at the touch of a button in the
center console or by storing their preferred settings in the M Drive
buttons – to adjust the steering characteristics to personal tastes or
  the situation at hand.</p>
<p>High-performance brakes borrowed from motor sport. <br />The
remarkable high performance potential of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M is
backed up by the M compound brakes with large six-piston fixed
calipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the
rear. Excellent stopping power, precise feel, low weight and increased
resistance to heat are their headline features. The brake discs in
compound systems – which were originally developed for racing – use a
cast iron, ventilated and cross-drilled rotor mounted to an aluminum
hat. The surface of the brake pads is 50 percent larger compared with
those on the predecessor models. At the same time weight is down by
1.6 kilograms, helping to reduce unsprung and rotating masses. This
also contributes to the improved acceleration, responsiveness and
handling of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M. The compound brakes signal
their performance capability visually as well. All the brake discs are
perforated and inner-vented, and the brake callipers are painted in
Dark Blue metallic, in typical M fashion, and marked at the front
  wheels with the M logo.</p>
<p>The design. High performance, even when standing still.</p>
<p>The outstanding performance of the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M are
also showcased through their M design signatures. The close ties
between the two models – they have identical performance and equally
strong dynamic potential – are reflected particularly clearly in the
shared design of the front end with its large air intakes. However,
the individual characters of the two high-performance Sport models are
still very distinct, as is clear the first time they come into view.
The proportions of the BMW X5 M provide an instant showcase of its
muscular power and elegance, not to mention its impressive
versatility. The flowing lines of the BMW X6 M, meanwhile, accentuate
the prominent coupe lines and sporting athleticism of the BMW Sports
  Activity Coupe.</p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M have been designed for use on the
road. Both of these elite Sport machines combine the raised seating
position of an all-wheel-drive BMW X model with the outstanding
overall concept balance of a BMW M vehicle. In order to visually
reinforce the further improved on-road attributes of the new M models,
the whole body is painted the same color. In combination with a
10-millimeter reduction in ride height and the wider track created by
the use of mixed-size tires, the vehicles have a lower, more powerful
stance, cut an even sportier figure even when stationary, and as a
result enjoy a very distinct personality when compared with their BMW X5/BMW X6 siblings.</p>
<p>Visually striking yet fully functional front end. <br />The shared
front-end design of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M is likewise a clear
departure from that of the respective standard models and follows the
classic “form follows function” maxim. The large air intakes and
voluminous “kidneys” of the radiator grille, with the now customary
M double-bar look, are mandated by the high cooling air requirements
of the powerful engine, transmission and high-performance front
brakes. Despite the large amount of cooling and more stringent
pedestrian protection requirements, the designers have managed to
integrate foglamps into the front end of the vehicles. Both new
M models borrow their headlights from the BMW X6, complete with
headlight washer system. Elsewhere, the special flaps low down in the
outer air intakes –adapted from those on racing vehicles – reduce lift
and emphasise the optimized aerodynamics of the two new models.</p>
<p>Same genes, distinctive looks. <br />The differences in the character
of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M are particularly evident when the two
models are viewed from the side. The BMW X5 M reinforces its presence
and functionality with its upright stature, long roofline and large
window surfaces. By contrast, the BMW X6 M displays the unmistakable,
flowing lines of a BMW Sports Activity Coupe through its gently curved
glasshouse, sloping roofline and pronounced wedge shape. M‑specific
features of both models include the familiar twin-stalk exterior
mirrors with integral side indicators and optional display for the
Active Blind Spot Detection. Another signature element of models from
BMW M GmbH are the gills in the front side panels featuring chrome
trim that includes a model badge and Air Breather.</p>
<p>Powerful rear end with racing accents.<br />The rear ends of the
BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M also differ significantly from their standard
siblings, exuding a stronger aura and majoring on bold, sporty
accents. This approach is underlined in particular by the wide rear
tires (which are a different size from the fronts), the distinctive M
rear aprons painted in body color and the hallmark M four-tailpipe
exhaust. The diffuser element (likewise in body color) adapted from
racing vehicles helps to ensure aerodynamically optimized airflow at
the lower edge of the rear bumper moulding, allowing the new M models
to highlight once again the impressive functionality of their design
features. A rear spoiler painted in body color on the BMW X6 M reduces
  rear-axle lift.</p>
<p>Sporting ambience and flawless ergonomics. <br />As with all vehicles
from the BMW brand, the design of the interior prioritizes intuitive,
quick and error-free usability. And M GmbH also makes its own
distinctive mark here. For example, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come
with a newly developed, ergonomically optimized M leather steering
wheel with gearshift paddles, while the M gearshift lever has an
equally distinctive design. The instrument cluster, M Drive menu in
the information display, displays in the optional Head-Up Display and
special multifunction switch with M Drive buttons on the steering
wheel also fit the M template.</p>
<p>The sporting ambience on board the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M is
accentuated by the exclusive, electrically operated M Multifunction
seats for the driver and front passenger – in fine-grain Merino
leather with contrast stitching and embossed M logo in the backrests –
and by the leather-covered BMW Individual instrument panel. Door sill
strips with model lettering, aluminum interior trim strips and the
standard Alcantara anthracite roof liner lend the interior an
  additional touch of exclusivity.</p>
<p>High-quality standard equipment and options.</p>
<p>The new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M come with an extensive range of
exclusive equipment from the factory which illustrates their character
as high-performance Sport machines that can be used every day.
Customers can also dip into a large selection of optional equipment
with which to make their vehicle even sportier, for example, or to
satisfy the most exacting requirements in terms of comfort.
Standard-fitted exterior features painted in body color and fitting
the classic M profile are a key factor in the striking appearance of
the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M. These include a front apron with
large air intakes, a double-bar kidney grille, familiar M twin-stalk
exterior mirrors, side gills with the M logo and Air Breathers, a rear
apron with integrated diffuser and a four-tailpipe exhaust system in
chrome. Both models are fitted with standard forged 21-inch
BMW M light-alloy wheels in Orbit Grey and with mixed non-runflat
  Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.</p>
<p>High-quality interior with an exclusive allure.<br />Elegance and
impressive functionality are also defining features of the interior of
the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M. As well as the new M leather
steering wheel with integrated aluminum gearshift paddles and
M multi-function seats in Merino leather for the driver and front
passenger (with electric adjustment and memory function), the
M-specific standard equipment of both models also includes a Nappa
leather dashboard, an Alcantara anthracite roof liner, aluminum
interior trim strips, door sill finishers with model lettering, knee
pads on the center console and an M footrest for the driver.</p>
<p>Likewise included as standard equipment for the new BMW X5 M and new
BMW X6 M are an alarm system, power tailgate, automatically dimming
rear-view and exterior mirrors, a headlight washer system, 4-zone
automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon surround sound system,
Park Distance Control rear-view camera. Xenon and adaptive headlights
are also part of the standard equipment for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M.
These items are in addition to the driver assistance systems familiar
from the regular BMW X5 and BMW X6 and the mobility services from
BMW ConnectedDrive. Among the highlights here is the new-generation
Navigation system Professional, which boasts even greater capability
and sharper graphics and incorporates 3D elements into its map display.</p>
<p>In keeping with their high-performance pretensions, the two new
M models also come as standard with an M-specific instrument cluster –
complete with displays showing the gear selected, system status
(engine dynamics, Dynamic Damper Control, M Servotronic), M Drive mode
and a compass, the M Drive menu in the information display and
M-specific buttons on the M leather steering wheel. Over and above the
information projected by the standard system, the optional Head-Up
Display for the new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M also features a special
M display including a digital speed display, gear display, rev band
  and Shift Lights.</p>
<p>Accurate analysis of driving style with the M Laptimer
app.<br />BMW M GmbH has developed the BMW M Laptimer app for
smartphones so customers can access extensive analysis of their
personal driving style on the track. With the smartphone linked up to
the vehicle, the BMW M Laptimer app can be operated using the iDrive
Controller. The app records the vehicle’s speed, lateral and
longitudinal acceleration, the gear currently engaged, steering angle
and accelerator position. This data can subsequently be used to
precisely analyze the driver’s actions and reactions at the various
points around the track via graphic displays on the customer’s
smartphone. Another feature allows two recordings on the same track to
be compared corner-by-corner. The readings used here can be either the
driver’s own or data shared by other drivers via email or social networks.</p>

Through this industry-first combination of attributes, the M5 redefined the capabilities of a sedan with levels of power, precision, balance, and linear control never before imaginable. Since then, finding new ways to expand the boundaries of what is possible with existing BMW models has been the singular purpose of the craftsmen at BMW M. Now the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the remarkable performance, dynamic driving experience, athletic design, and premium quality of a BMW M product.</p><p>These two new vehicles become the first BMW M models with all-wheel drive, and likewise they’re the first BMW M models in the Sports Activity category: the X5 M, a midsize SAV with seating for five and a 2-piece tail / liftgate, and the X6 M, with its one-of-a-kind, fastback Sports Activity Coupe body design, seating for four and 1-piece liftgate.</p><p>Both of these new Ms are powered by a brand-new BMW M engine that departs purposefully from the established ultra-high-revving V-8 and V-10 M engines powering the M3, M5 and M6 models. For power, torque, and response characteristics, BMW M has adopted twin turbocharging, direct fuel injection and accompanying new technologies that achieve the ever-consistent BMW M goal of the highest level of performance.</p><p>Displacing 4395 cubic centimeters (4.4 liters), the new V-8 is identical in size to the V-8 that powers the series X6 xDrive50i, both 7 Series V-8 models, and the new 550i Gran Turismo. From this common starting point, the new M engine goes a distinct M way, with twin scroll technology and the world’s first “crossover” exhaust manifold connecting both of the V-8’s cylinder banks. It delivers a monumental 555 horsepower at 6,000rpm.</p><p>As an important part of the vehicle concept, the new V-8’s power is transmitted to all four wheels via BMW’s standard-bearing xDrive all-wheel drive system. Further, power is apportioned strategically between the two rear wheels by the Dynamic Performance Control first seen on the standard X6 a year ago. Factor in BMW M’s treatment of the already advanced Sports Activity Vehicle suspension, a newly developed Servotronic steering system, and prodigiously dimensioned composite brakes, and you have a pair of vehicles that unite performance, versatility and presence as nothing before them has done. In this context, one could easily say that “unique” is an understatement.</p><p>The two models’ performance capabilities have been developed to meet criteria right out of the racing world. They have been designed and engineered to deliver top results in terms of acceleration, cornering power, steering characteristics and braking distances – and to achieve them with remarkable efficiency. Both models, for example, accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. But such objective measures barely begin to describe their performance: The engine responds with sparkling spontaneity and agility. Its huge torque output of 500 pound-feet is at the driver’s disposal all the way from 1500 to 5650 rpm. In corners, the vehicles apply standard Adaptive Drive and Dynamic Performance Control to the purpose of achieving astonishing lateral acceleration. And none of this comes at the expense of docile controllability: whether accelerating full-bore, cornering at maximum grip levels or slowing to achieve remarkably-short stopping distances, the X5 M and X6 M are always responsive to the driver’s commands.</p><p>The BMW M magic: as harmonious in a Sports Activity Vehicle as in the M3, M5 and M6 automobiles.<br>BMW M’s mastery of motorsports and high-performance sports automobiles is well established. Now, with the X5 M and X6 M, BMW M extends its performance mastery to BMW’s all-wheel-drive Sports Activity models. The result is a heretofore unknown combination of performance attributes with all-road ability and commanding driving position – truly a new dimension in automotive competence.</p><p>And this competence doesn’t come through as merely extreme performance. That is present, of course, but in the BMW M tradition it is combined with aerodynamics, design and driver ergonomics into a harmonious whole, an entity that puts the driver in a position to extract and enjoy that performance without stress or uncertainty.</p><p>Design: typical M dynamics and exclusivity.<br>With these two new models, typical M performance dynamics are realized in AWD vehicles of the BMW Sport Activity format – and expressed clearly in the exterior design. </p><p>From the front, the two models are essentially identical. Their hood and headlight clusters derive from the standard X6. Generous air intakes dominate the lower surfaces, communicating that the twin turbo/twin scroll V-8 requires a large volume of air to produce its 555 hp and its likewise powerful brakes must also be cooled effectively. In this view, the specific M aerodynamic exterior mirrors, two-toned in dark Shadowline finish and body color, are also prominent.</p><p>In profile, traditional M “gills” are positioned above and aft of the front wheel wells, which house 20-in. wheels (in different M designs for the two models) and ultra-high performance run-flat tires. Here as well as at the front and rear, protective black areas of the standard X5 and X6 models are replaced by body color, which accents the fact that the Ms are intended mainly for on-road use.</p><p>At the rear, typical M design elements again confirm the bold sportiness of both models; the rear aspects, though, differ markedly as do their standard counterparts. On the X6 M, air outlets from the rear wheelhouses are particularly prominent; both models, however, frame their “quad” chrome exhaust tips with lower diffuser forms.</p><p>X5 M: proportions signal presence and versatility.<br>Though the two models’ frontal aspects are largely shared, the X5 M is notably recognizable by its more upright and taller overall height. (Its windshield is taller and not as raked.) In profile, the X5 M is of course “squarer,” and of the two only the X5 M has optional roof rails; these are in high-gloss Shadowline finish.</p><p>X6 M: overtly sporty and on-road oriented.<br>Though both models are very sporty indeed, the X6 M is more overtly so. In return for its more rakish profile, it consciously gives away some utility and passenger-carrying ability.<br> <br>In profile the X6 M’s “gills,” a traditional BMW M design element, carry the M logo as on the X5 M, but are larger and more elaborately modeled. Wheel designs are also a distinguishing element. Both models come standard with 20-in. wheels in differentiated front/rear sizes, but the X5 M’s wheels are in BMW M V Spoke design #299M, the X6 M’s in M Double Spoke design #300M.</p><p>BMW M Power: introduction of twin scroll / twin turbo technology with crossover exhaust manifold.<br>With the two new BMW M models comes a spectacular expansion of the BMW M Power engine heritage. A brand-new powerplant was developed, one that in terms of power and torque assumes the top rung of the BMW M Power ladder.</p><p>To achieve a performance capability befitting BMW M vehicles, an entirely new and unique engine design has been developed. Internally designated the S63B44O0, it introduces twin scroll twin turbochargers with a “crossover” exhaust manifold that serves both of the V-8’s two cylinder banks to achieve wonderfully spontaneous throttle response, a linear power curve and an unusually high and flat torque curve. In numbers, these accomplishments come to 555 hp, peaking at 6000 rpm; and 500 lb-ft. of torque maintained all the way from 1500 to 5650 rpm. Such statistics are ideal for these two new M vehicles.</p><p>Further engineering specifics of the new BMW M Power engine are found in the pistons, camshafts and an almost entirely new cooling system: to provide cooling appropriate to the dramatically high power output, the system originally developed for the X6 xDrive50i, the new 750i/Li models and the 550i GT has been modified and expanded. Among other modifications, the coolant tank in the V-space between the cylinder banks was eliminated, reducing the quantity of coolant and the system’s weight. Other details include a second, lower-temperature radiator with its own electric coolant pump that improves the intercooling of the intake air, particularly in very dynamic driving. Finally, an auxiliary electric coolant pump is programmed to run after the engine is shut off to prevent overheating of the turbocharger bearings.</p><p>Turbochargers and catalytic converters in V-space between cylinder banks.<br>Innovations are found here not just in the turbochargers themselves, but also in gas-flow paths and the way the components are arranged. As in the V-8 engine of the 750i/Li and 550i GT models, the two turbochargers are placed (along with the catalytic converters) in the V-space between the two cylinder banks. This layout results in an unusually compact engine, and also requires that the intake valves be moved outboard and the exhaust valves inboard – the opposite of conventional V-engines. The length of intake and exhaust tracts is reduced and their diameters increased, reducing pressure losses especially on the exhaust side.</p><p>A further advantage of the layout is the short distance between the cylinders’ combustion chambers and the primary catalytic converters; this leads to quicker warm-up of the catalysts after the engine is started.</p><p>Two twin scroll turbos on an engine for the first time. From BMW M, naturally.<br>Twin scroll represents another significant refinement of turbocharging technology. Instead of all cylinders of each bank feeding their exhaust into a single path, there are two paths for the exhaust to travel from cylinders to each turbine. Apportionment of cylinders between the two paths is chosen to eliminate interference between cylinders’ exhaust pulses and undesirable “feedback” of exhaust gas into a cylinder that’s inducting fresh air for combustion. Additionally, dividing the gases between two smaller paths results in higher gas velocity than in a single larger path, which enhances the turbocharger’s response and reduces lag. Maximum boost pressure of this amazing system is 1.5 bar (22 psi).</p><p>Crossover exhaust manifold: a new, patented BMW concept.<br>This is the means by which BMW M enabled the use of twin scroll turbo housings, and it is made possible by the unique engine configuration with the exhaust valves inboard and the turbos between the cylinder banks. There are four exhaust runners, each carrying the exhaust gases of two cylinders whose ignition firing is separated by 360? of crankshaft rotation. These cylinder pairs are always on opposite banks. </p><p>These four runners provide two paths each to the two turbines. Each of the four runners is of identical length; they ensure perfectly regular timing of exhaust gas pulses and relatively continuous pressure to the turbines for maximum turbo effectiveness. Also to the same end, the turbines and compressors have been further optimized for efficiency.</p><p>As spent gases exit the two turbines, they vent into the two runners of a dual exhaust system…a system that, because of the unusual exhaust paths, emits a most fascinating sound. For optimum efficiency, the exhaust pipes are large in diameter and relatively straight; they merge in a transversely positioned main muffler, from which two typical chrome-finished M double tailpipes exit. The sound is further enhanced by electronically controlled flaps in the exhaust system.</p><p>So it is that in developing this magnificent and unique engine, BMW M has exploited the potential of turbocharging to its ultimate. The engine achieves not only epic torque and power, but a sound that bespeaks the BMW M tradition, while sounding different from any M engine before – and from any other engine on the road. In terms of power and performance, this new engine produces dramatic results – namely early-onset torque, holding steady at a spectacular level as revs climb from just above idle all the way to the 7000-rpm redline.</p><p>High Precision Direct Injection, controlled by piezo crystals.<br>BMW’s remarkably efficient High Precision direct fuel injection –timed via ultra-precise piezo crystals – also plays a major role in this engine’s combination of such high performance and, in view of the nature and performance of the <br>X5 M and X6 M, impressive fuel efficiency. The direct injectors deliver fuel to the combustion chambers at pressures up to 200 bar (nearly 3000 psi). The fuel also has a cooling effect on the combustion that allowed the M engineers to endow the engine with a high compression ratio: yet another technical attribute that contributes to both performance and efficiency, while also reducing exhaust emissions and even having a positive effect on how the engine sounds.</p><p>BMW EfficientDynamics at work: other features that promote performance and efficiency.<br>Further factors enhancing this engine’s all-around dazzling capabilities are BMW’s Double VANOS 1 infinitely-variable valve timing system, and a volume-controlled oil pump that at any instant pumps only the oil quantity that’s needed. Similarly, the fuel pump is controlled according to the engine’s needs, never supplying excess pressure that must be diverted.</p><p>Outside the engine itself, another oil pump –for the standard Active Roll Stabilization – gains a valve that regulates that system’s hydraulic cylinders according to use. This means that on straightaways – by far the majority of normal driving – this pump’s power requirement is reduced by up to 70%. </p><p>M Sport Automatic transmission with E-shift and steering-wheel shift paddles.<br>The X5 M and X6 M both employ an automatic transmission. It is a 6-speed unit specially engineered for fast shifting, a highly-direct connection to the engine, and equally high levels of smoothness and refinement.</p><p>Basic transmission control is via the console-mounted, illuminated E-shift lever, whose motions are mainly of a toggling nature rather than moving into different positions. Driver-selected (“manual”) shifts are executed in the Manual mode with either the lever itself, or M-specific aluminum shift paddles on the steering wheel.</p><p>This unit incorporates several M-specific features and functions that make it wholly appropriate to a BMW M vehicle:<br>•	In the Manual mode, an extra-fast reduction of engine torque, achieved by cutting the ignition and fuel delivery to individual engine cylinders, enabled the M engineers to achieve the quickest shifts ever in a BMW automatic. <br>•	Also in Manual, the driver can take a selected gear right up to the engine’s redline, with no automatic upshift as in most automatics. This heightens the driver’s control over the vehicle in spirited driving.<br>•	A Launch Control function is available. To engage this, the driver first selects the M/S with the E-shift, the Power Sport mode, and either the DSC’s M Dynamic Mode or DSC-off. Then, at a standstill with the brake pedal applied, the driver depresses the accelerator. A “starting flag” icon appears in the instrument-cluster display. When the driver releases the brakes, the transmission and engine are instantly programmed for performance-optimized wheel slip and upshifts. (Thus, even when Manual shifting is selected, in this mode the upshifts occur automatically.) When the driver lets up on the accelerator, Launch Control is disengaged.</p><p>If the driver actuates a paddle for a shift while driving in Sport or Drive mode, the transmission immediately switches to Manual mode. If the driver takes no further shift action within a few seconds, the transmission will either revert to Drive mode or will stay in Manual mode if Sport was originally selected.</p><p>BMW xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control: ideal combination for traction and handling in a sports vehicle. <br>The success of BMW’s xDrive system of all-wheel drive results from the fact that it doesn’t merely improve traction in slippery road conditions, but also helps optimize handling under all road conditions. </p><p>With xDrive’s electronically controlled variable torque distribution between the front and rear wheels (via a multi-disc internal clutch), any tendency toward under- or oversteer is kept at bay – before the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) detects any need to intervene. Sensors constantly measure any incipient slip at the tires and react lightning-fast to vary the torque distribution appropriately. The programming of this action in the X5 M and X6 M is specific to these models, calibrated for a stronger accent on rear-wheel drive: this is but one of the many ways in which M-typical handling has been imparted to these AWD vehicles.</p><p>Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) – heretofore offered only on the X6 and now standard on both M models – augments xDrive by precisely apportioning torque between the left and right rear wheels; steering precision, vehicle stability and agility are thus further optimized. In short, DPC enables BMW to elevate the world standard for handling in AWD vehicles.</p><p>The system consists of two multi-disc clutches and two planetary gearsets, one on each side of the rear differential. Each clutch is actuated mechanically by an electric servo motor, which acts on the basis of inputs from the same sensors that feed their information into the DSC system: vehicle speed, throttle position, wheel rotational speed, steering angle and yaw rate.</p><p>Each clutch can be partially or fully engaged as dictated by these inputs and the DSC control unit’s complex algorithms, whereby the planetary gearbox increases the wheel speed on its side by up to 10%. In turn, this acceleration of wheel speed achieves the desired influence on handling. A full transfer to the one or other wheel can occur in as little as 100 milliseconds; at a maximum, there can be up to a 1328-lb-ft. torque difference between the two rear wheels.<br>This effect – called “torque vectoring” – works either under power (that is, with the driver pressing the accelerator pedal) or in deceleration or downhill driving. It’s a highly technical concept, but the benefits are clear to the driver:<br>•	Greater agility in cornering or maneuvering situations where the vehicle would tend toward understeer. In this case, the outside wheel is accelerated, reducing the understeer and “neutralizing” the handling.<br>•	Greater stability in situations where the vehicle would tend toward oversteer. In this case, the inside wheel is accelerated, acting against the oversteer to stabilize the vehicle. Particularly when the driver lifts off the accelerator while cornering – a circumstance that in many vehicles can lead to oversteer and surprise the driver – stability is maintained to a remarkable degree and surprises are kept to an absolute minimum.<br>•	Improved traction even in straight-ahead driving. The wheel with better traction gets the extra “push” from its clutch and gearset.</p><p>For drivers keen to know just what xDrive and DPC are doing at any moment, a specific display can be called up in the control display. In a graphic representation of the four wheels, arrows indicate the distribution of driving torque to each wheel: this is not only entertaining, but also technologically informative about these systems’ contribution to the driving experience.</p><p>M Dynamic Mode for the most satisfying track driving.<br>In the X5 M and X6 M, the potential of both xDrive and DPC have been fully exploited by BMW M. Via the MDrive menu, the driver can switch DSC to the M Dynamic Mode (MDM), in which – <br>•	DSC’s threshold for intervening via the brakes and throttle is raised, allowing the driver to “push harder” in curves.<br>•	A special xDrive program imparts a handling characteristic more like that of rear-wheel drive.</p><p>Together with DPC, these measures result in ultimate M-handling attributes. MDM facilitates maximum cornering speeds with very “late” DSC intervention…and, under the extreme tire-loading conditions at a curve’s apex, outstandingly high exit speeds, event when the road is wet. DSC can be fully de-activated (except for anti-lock braking) by a longer push on its button. What more could the expert driver ask for on a race or test track?</p><p>Further functions of DSC contribute to confident driving and active safety.<br>Dynamic Stability Control, the multi-faceted system that helps stabilize all current BMW models under a wide variety of driving conditions, incorporates many other useful functions – some exclusive to AWD models such as the X5 M and X6 M.</p><p>Among these are anti-lock braking (ABS); Automatic Stability Control (ASC) for stability in cornering and avoidance maneuvers; Cornering Brake Control (CBC) for extra stability should the driver brake while cornering; Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), which maximizes braking action in emergency brake actuations; and Hill Descent Control (HDC) to help the driver maintain a steady, low speed when negotiating steep downhill terrain. With the electronic limited-slip differential Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X), a spinning wheel is braked gently so that the wheel on the opposite side can get a grip in slippery going. In addition:<br>•	Brake Standby. When the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal abruptly, DSC recognizes that sharp braking may be about to occur and applies just enough pressure in the brake system to snug up the pads against the rotors. Thus by the time the driver’s foot reaches the brake pedal, the short lag normally resulting from bringing the pad to the rotor is eliminated. Actual braking sets in more quickly; the reduced stopping or deceleration distance could reduce the likelihood of an accident. If the driver does not apply the brakes after the abrupt lift-off, no actual braking occurs.<br>•	Brake Drying. Acting on input from the windshield wipers’ rain sensor, the pads are periodically brought up to the rotors – just enough to eliminate any film of water between pads and rotors, but not enough to cause any brake application.<br>•	Start-off Assistant. Keeps the vehicle from rolling backward when stopped facing uphill. The driver can then start up without doing a ballet with the clutch, brake and accelerator (manual transmission) or doesn’t have to hold the brakes when moving off from rest on a steep hill (automatic transmission). This function holds about 2 seconds.<br>•	Automatic Hold. Automatic Hold can hold the vehicle stationary for a longer period of time before the accelerator is pressed. This employs the electromechanical parking brake, which itself can be manually activated or released by a console switch; Automatic Hold can be activated or de-activated by the driver.<br>•	Modulated ABS function. Analog control of the DSC brake valves smoothes the anti-lockup function. Instead of simply being fully applied and released (digital), the application and release of these valves are modulated.</p><p>M suspension plus standard Adaptive Drive.<br>The X5/X6 suspension system, with its double-wishbone/multi-link front and Integral IV (4-link) rear suspension, is modified by BMW M with specific elastokinematics (bushings and other flexible elements), more rigid transverse links, firmer hydraulic cushions at the front trailing lower arms, a firmer mounting of the rear subframe to the body structure, and a 10-mm (0.4-in.) lower ride height. In addition, the main and auxiliary springs are specially calibrated, and 3-path mounting of the springs helps disperse the higher forces that accompany the increased handling capability.</p><p>Both models come standard with Adaptive Drive, the combination of Electronic Damping Control (EDC) and Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) that is available on the series X5 and X6; and self-leveling rear air springs. EDC provides adjustable shock absorbers and, in its Normal mode, steplessly adjusts them to any level of firmness between their most compliant and firmest settings. Thus at any given moment, it precisely adapts to the road conditions and driver’s demands. In the Sport setting, the shocks adopt a firmer response profile for absolutely optimum smooth-road handling with little sacrifice in ride comfort.</p><p>BMW’s Servotronic (vehicle-speed-sensitive) power steering has also been specially developed for the X5 M and X6 M. Two levels of power assist are selectable by the driver via either the EDC button or MDrive: Normal or Sport, the latter providing an uncompromisingly high, sporty level of steering effort for the most dynamic driving situations.</p><p>Via a multitude of electronic sensors reading such parameters as vehicle speed, steering angle, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, wheel and body motions and others, data affecting vehicle dynamics are transmitted and processed via the ultra-fast FlexRay system: BMW was the first vehicle manufacturer to incorporate this advanced system in production models.</p><p>Massively dimensioned, yet weight-saving brakes.<br>The prodigious performance of an M vehicle must of course be harnessed by correspondingly powerful 4-wheel disc brakes. On the X5 M and X6 M, this is ensured by massive – 15.6 in. front/15.2 in. rear – rotors. The rear rotors consist of an aluminum “hat” connecting the rotor to the hub and a high-carbon cast-iron outer section as the friction surface; the two portions are riveted together. This patented construction reduces unsprung weight by more than 2 lb. per rotor, helping improve handling and ride comfort especially on rough road surfaces; and also reduces rotor deformation under hard braking by about 20%, which means less tendency of the brakes to vibrate when hot and reduced likelihood of rotors cracking under heat when the vehicle is driven hard.</p><p>At the front the rotors are acted upon by 4-piston fixed calipers, at the rear by single-piston floating calipers.</p><p>20-inch wheels and ultra-high performance tires.<br>Transmitting the tremendous capabilities of the M suspension and brakes to the road are 20-in. wheels of 10.0-in. front/11.0-in. rear width and shod with 275/40R-20 front / 315/35R-20 rear ultra-high performance run-flat tires – these are the only vehicles in their field standard-equipped with such generous dimensions. Wheel designs are specific for these two models, and exclusive to them: the X5 M receives V-spoke (Style 299 M) wheels and the X6 M receives double-spoke (Style 300 M).</p><p>Dynamics at the driver’s fingertip: the MDrive system.<br>In addition to the DSC, EDC and steering modes already described, the new M powertrain also offers a choice of characteristics. Here the two settings (called Power modes) are –<br>•	Sport – quicker throttle response from the engine, sportier shift characteristics from the transmission.<br>•	Efficient – more relaxed throttle response, shifts that occur at lower engine speeds. Given the new M engine’s phenomenal torque, especially at low to medium speeds, this mode is especially appropriate to relaxed driving moods and beneficial to fuel efficiency as well.</p><p>The Power mode selection, as well as those for DSC, EDC and steering, is pre-configured within the MDrive menu of the iDrive system, and then recalled by the driver by a simple touch of the M button on the steering wheel. MDrive is an M-specific enhancement to the iDrive system, which appears in all 2010 BMW models in its new, 4th- generation version (optional on M3).</p><p>M-specific instrumentation, high-tech driver-assistance features.<br>BMW M’s philosophy of sporting vehicles comes through just as clearly in the Ms’ cockpit as it does in their performance, handling and exterior design. Both these AWD sports vehicles have M-specific instrumentation that includes a variable tachometer rpm limit (redline), specific functional displays and white instrument illumination. And naturally, they’re standard-equipped with multi-adjustable M sport seats and the compact-diameter, thick-rimmed M sport steering wheel.</p><p>Confident, stress-free driving is fortified by innovative driver-assistance systems. In both models, BMW’s dynamic cruise control can apply the brakes lightly to maintain the set speed on downhill runs; Xenon Adaptive headlights help the driver see around curves at road speeds, and cornering lights perform a similar function at city corners. Auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, a digital compass in the interior mirror, and privacy glass aft of the B-pillar are likewise standard in the Ms as are BMW’s Online Information Services, Real Time Traffic Information and Voice Command. As in all current BMWs, rain-sensing windshield wipers and automatic switch-on of headlights at dusk are also standard.</p><p>Optionally, iDrive and the conventional dash instrumentation can be augmented with the Driver Assistance Package, which includes –<br>•	A special M version of BMW’s Head-up Display, which in addition to information like vehicle speed, cruise-control set speed, navigation guidance and vehicle function monitoring, puts a dynamic engine-speed readout at the M driver’s disposal – all seeming to appear out in front, over the hood, in attractive colors, directly in the driver’s line of sight and visible only to the driver.<br>•	Automatic High Beams, a feature which automatically switches the headlights between high and low beams according to oncoming traffic conditions.<br>•	Rear-view Camera with the new Top-View function, the latter complementing the standard Park Distance Control to form an all-around plan view of the vehicle and possible obstructions outside. This view appears in the control display whenever reverse gear is engaged or the driver manually selects PDC.</p><p>4th-generation iDrive: user-friendly, intuitive, elegant.<br>With the launch of iDrive seven years ago, BMW initiated a new direction in the control of vehicle features and functions. With a multi-menu color display and a single console-mounted controller, the potentially crowded landscape of buttons and knobs was supplanted by a computer-logic control path. In the meantime, iDrive has progressed through two evolutionary stages; now, a 4th generation adds an 80-gigabyte media server and other features to build BMW’s pioneering system into a more capable, more intuitive, and simpler interface.</p><p>In the X5 M and X6 M models, iDrive employs a high-resolution 8.8-in. control display and includes GPS Navigation standard. Positioned at dash center, the new display advances standards for logical, readily understood menus and attractive graphics. The controller has been refined for comfortable, intuitive selection and activation of functions via standardized turn, push and tilt motions while being augmented with more direct-select keys.</p><p>User-friendly: controller with direct-select keys. Benefiting from the newest biomechanics R&D, the state-of-the-art controller operates with tactile precision and clearly structured motions. New control elements, menu schemes and graphic representations in the control display become evident upon first use, yet with familiarity, user appreciation grows over time. </p><p>An important new refinement is four direct-select keys, adjacent to the controller, for the most frequently used menus. These allow quick selection of CD, radio, phone and navigation menus, and are augmented by three further keys of general utility: one takes the user directly to the start menu (MENU), one to the most recently active menu (BACK), and the third (OPTION) presents various options within the current area. Thus searches are likely to be shorter, or altogether unnecessary.</p><p>Now even more useful: Programmable Memory Keys. Lined up next to the audio controls, these keys allow the user to store favorite or frequently used functions on various keys and recall them instantly. Because the keys are sensitive not just to being pressed but also to being merely touched by the user’s finger, one can see the stored function shown on the control display by lightly touching the key. If it’s the right one, the user need only press the key and it’s there, ready to use.</p><p>Large-format display, preview maps and full-screen images. The display’s new 1280 x 480-pixel resolution means remarkably true-to-life images. New menu structures, too, make finding desired functions easier. </p><p>User-friendlier GPS Navigation. This overall refinement of functionality means simpler and more enjoyable use of the standard GPS Navigation. Full-screen map displays offer outstandingly detailed views of the geography; maps as well as specific symbols can be shown in 3-dimensional form. Selected points of interest along the travel route appear with near-photographic realism.</p><p>BMW Search. BMW introduces access to Google Maps (http://maps.google.com) database search capability within the vehicle: Subscribers to the optional BMW Assist Convenience Plan can access “BMW Search” to quickly find a desired business with just a key word, benefiting from the world’s most famous online search engine. After finding the desired information, users can immediately start route guidance or a hands-free call with the user’s Bluetooth-linked phone at just a simple push of a button.</p><p>BMW Search was recently enhanced to delivery real-time fuel prices at nearby gas stations, major stock indices from BLOOMBERG, and access to weather forecasts for the next three days. BMW Search saves time and reduces frustration with destination entry on the Navigation System. The information you look up is continuously updated by Google. “BMW Search” is the next logical and consequential development of the link between the automobile and the Internet.</p><p>Dynamic and solid: body structure and safety engineering.<br>Like all BMW models, X5 M and X6 M models have an extremely strong body structure as their foundation. Though these are not light vehicles, their weight was kept in balance while maintaining great solidity –<br>•	by employing advanced materials<br>•	via the geometry of load-carrying and energy-absorbing elements.</p><p>These factors result in commendable impact safety, yet also the agility for which all BMWs, especially M models, are known.</p><p>Regarding the engineering for crash safety, there are multiple “force paths” for leading and dispersing impact loads through the structure and helping maintain the passenger compartment’s integrity in a severe crash. Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the front occupants, and curtain-type head protection for the front and rear occupants. All seating positions – five in the X5 M, four in the X6 M – provide 3-point safety belts equipped with belt force limiters plus, on the front seats, automatic tensioning in a crash impact. To enhance occupant protection in rear-end impacts, the front seats’ head restraints are of the Active type, employing fast-reacting pyrotechnic action to pivot the restraints into close proximity with the occupants’ heads. LATCH attachments (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) provide for securing a child restraint at each outboard rear seating position.</p><p>Like all X5 and X6 models, these two Ms also provide a Rollover Sensor that detects the likelihood of a vehicle rollover and, if so indicated, deploys the front/rear Head Protection System and front belt tensioners. The Rollover Sensor is networked with the vehicle’s Dynamic Stability Control, which delivers data on lateral acceleration (“cornering”) and any possible skidding.</p><p>Signature BMW style, function and quality; options created by BMW Individual.<br>In standard form, the X5 and X6 interiors offer generous space, elegant and distinctive design, and fine materials. The X5 M and X6 M further add to this ambiance with special details of esthetics and function; beyond their own special standard equipment, they also offer an appealing selection of optional enhancements, some of them created by the BMW Individual materials team.</p><p>Spatially, the two models differ primarily in their rear seating compartment: the X5 M seats five, the X6 M four. In both models the rear seats’ backrests fold essentially flat to extend cargo capacity to its maximum of 75.2 cu ft. in the X5, 59.7 cu ft. in the X6. In the X5, the cargo area is covered by a retractable cover; in the X6 it is covered by a rigid but foldable cover that can be stored underneath the cargo floor. A power-operated 1-piece liftgate is standard on the X6 M; a power upper section of the X5 M’s 2-piece tailgate is optional.</p><p>Up front, the two models are essentially the same, with the special M instrumentation described earlier and standard Aluminum Shadow trim across the dash as well as on the doors and front center console. Optional interior trim materials are BMW Individual’s high-gloss Piano Black, a red/brown-tone Eucalyptus wood or the BMW M Carbon Leather.</p><p>Driver and passengers are welcomed into the M models by handsome doorsill trims sporting the M logo; other special BMW M touches include knee pads on the center console for the driver and front passenger, and an aluminum-trimmed M driver’s footrest.</p><p>As in other M models, fine Merino leather is standard in Extended form, appearing on the seats with M-specific stitching, doors including armrests and pulls, front head restraints with embossed M logo, and center console. Merino is notable for its gentle surface and natural grain; only hides without damage or irregularities are selected, no artificial surface treatment is done, and color is applied all the way through so that this leather can retain its beauty and natural breathing ability over the years. This standard Merino treatment is available in three colors. Additionally, the lower portion of the dash is leather-covered.</p><p>There are two upholstery options: Full Merino, which adds leather to the upper dash; the front backrests’ rear sides and their storage pockets; leather upper and lower door panels; and two additional color choices. In combination with the Active Ventilated Seats Package, the seating upholstery is perforated and the leather treatment is Full.</p><p>In both models, M sport front seats are standard; beyond the usual fore-aft, height and angle adjustments, these include power adjustment of backrest width and head-restraint height plus multi-stage heating; BMW’s lavish 20-way Comfort seats are included in the Active Ventilated Seats Package. A fold-down rear center armrest is standard in both models.</p><p>BMW Assist, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification – all standard with the X5 M and X6 M.<br>Both models come standard with BMW Assist, a system of telematics and user services of sweeping scope. Among the services included in the BMW Assist Safety Plan – whose subscription is paid by BMW for the first 4 years after purchase of a new vehicle, – include emergency services, a wide range of roadside-assistance benefits, stolen-vehicle recovery, and Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification. In the event of a severe accident, the BMW Assist system automatically transmits the vehicle’s location and crash information to a response specialist, who will speak to the vehicle occupants to determine if they are all right, while a second specialist requests dispatch of emergency services as needed.</p><p>Yet more amenities, standard and optional.<br>The X5 M and X6 M’s standard equipment also includes a premium 16-speaker audio system with 600 watts of amplification power, Digital Sound Processing and newly standard HD Radio. BMW M’s Enhanced Premium Sound system, included in the optional Premium Sound Package, offers an even higher-performing audio experience. This ultra-audiophile system features high-end speakers with Neodym magnetic drives and lightweight, extremely rigid hexacone membranes; 9-channel, 825-watt amplification; DIRAC technology for the most accurate reproduction imaginable; and an extensive range of other high-tech features. Also included in this package are a dash-mounted 6-disc DVD changer and an iPod/USB adapter. All X5 and X6 audio systems include two subwoofers in BMW’s under-seat locations.</p><p>Both models come standard with a dual-zone climate-control system, featuring separate left/right temperature and air-distribution controls plus a wide range of other state-of-the-art features. Available as part of the Rear Climate Package is a 4-zone system, which adds left/right temperature settings and other features to give 2nd-row passengers a high degree of individual control over their environment. Features of the rear climate control include a separate blower, additional air outlets in the B-pillars, a dedicated control panel, and its own automatic program. Sunshades for the rear door windows are also included in this Package.</p><p>A glass moonroof is standard, in two forms. On the X5, it is a dual-panel Panoramic type with about 140% greater glass area than the single-panel type. Both panels can be tilted up at the rear; the forward, larger panel can also be slid open. Because of the X6’s sporty sloping roof, it has a single-panel type. Both moonroof types include 1-touch operation.</p><p>Ultimate performance, style and exclusivity in the BMW “X” format: X5 M and X6 M available now.<br>The X5 M and X6 M made their world debuts in April 2009, with the X6 M at the New York Auto Show followed quickly by the X5 M at the Shanghai International Auto Show; production begins in July ’09 at BMW’s newly expanded Spartanburg, South Carolina facility. Going on sale in summer ’09 as 2010 models, the X5 M and X6 M are priced at $86,225 and $89,725 respectively, including their $825 destination charge.</p><p>1 – VANOS = VAriable NOckenwellen Steuerung = variable camshaft control, or variable valve timing.</p><p>BMW Group In America<br>BMW of North America, LLC has been present in the United States since 1975. On the occasion of the world debut of the BMW X5 M at the Shanghai International Auto Show, BMW today announced U.S. retail pricing for both the X5 M and the X6 M. The X6 M was unveiled for the first time at the New York International Auto Show on April 8th. When the X5 M and X6 M go on sale this fall as 2010 model vehicles, they will retail for $86,225 and $89,725 respectively (including $825 Destination & Handling).</p><p>Both the BMW X5 M and X6 M feature a new reverse flow V8 engine with patented twin-turbo technology. The lag-eliminating Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM) enables the engine to produce 555 horsepower and accelerate both models from 0 to 60mph in 4.5 seconds. At BMW M, “the chassis must always be more powerful than the engine.” The X5 M and X6 M exploit the limits of physics through their reworked Integrated Chassis Management systems to provide maximum road-holding without conceding to harsh ride characteristics. </p><p>Power is delivered through an M derivative of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive, allowing M typical throttle-steering. At the rear axle is BMW’s revolutionary Dynamic Performance Control, tailored by BMW M to ensure near-perfect distribution of power. Four M-characteristic tailpipes emerge from the aerodynamic diffuser in the rear. Enormous brakes round out the package, providing confidence under all conditions.</p><p>The modern, sustainable legacy of BMW M began in 1985 when engineers placed the snarling, race-bred inline-6 engine from the M1 supercar into the production BMW 5 Series sedan, reworked the suspension and brakes, and created BMW’s first M5. The M5 redefined the capabilities of a sedan with levels of power, precision, and linear control never before imaginable. Ever since, the craftsmen at BMW M have been focused on finding new ways to expand the performance boundaries using existing BMW models as a basis. </p><p>Additional information, videos and photographs of both the X5 M and X6 M are available at www.bmwusanews.com.</p><p>BMW Group In America<br>BMW of North America, LLC has been present in the United States since 1975.
