Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 27, 2023…A performance model with unmistakable M character takes its place at the top of the new BMW X1 range. The new 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive builds on the emotional driving pleasure that lies at the heart of BMW’s compact Sports Activity Vehicle with an injection of the power, agility and precision for which M models are celebrated. Its 2.0-liter 4-cylinder motor is part of the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines and uses M TwinPower Turbo technology to produce 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

With this newfound energy, the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive races from rest to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, on to a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. M-specific chassis technology – including the option of M Compound brakes for the first time on an M performance model – is integrated with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive to deliver sublime performance characteristics.

The sharper character of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is clearly apparent both inside and out. The new range-topping performance model comes with exclusive design and equipment features typically reserved for high-performance cars from BMW M GmbH. These include the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes and the optional M Sport seats with illuminated M logos. 

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive also breaks new ground in terms of digital technology: it is the first model to feature the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9.

The US launch of the new 2024 BMW X1 M35i xDrive will begin in October 2023. The flagship model will be built at BMW Group Plant Regensburg, together with all other variants of the new BMW X1.

New 4-cylinder engine with power to spare. 

The most potent 4-cylinder version of the latest modular generation of engines delivers the raw power that the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive turns into captivating performance. Various innovations set these new engines apart from previous generations, such as the adoption of the Miller combustion cycle, redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and changes to the camshaft timing, injection, ignition system, and exhaust gas routing.

Among the 2.0-liter unit’s M-specific highlights are a new, stronger crankshaft, an optimized oil supply system for the pistons with cooling channels, and main bearing shells and caps carried over from the latest-generation 6-cylinder engines. It is also equipped with VANOS variable camshaft timing with optimized oil supply for the actuator and VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing. The result of these enhancements is 312 hp produced between 5,750 and 6,500 rpm, and peak torque of 295 lb-ft from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm. 

The new motor’s spirited power is accompanied by an assertive bark from the M-specific exhaust system. The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the first M performance model to feature two pairs of twin tailpipes. Nestled neatly into the left and right of the rear apron, they are a signature feature of high-performance models from BMW M and have now been adopted by the most powerful member of the compact SAV range. 

7-speed double clutch Steptronic transmission with M Sport Boost. 

The 7-speed Steptronic transmission fitted to the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive stands out with its ultra-sharp shift action. Shift paddles on the steering wheel allow quick manual gear changes.

The M Sport Boost function is also available for situations in which rapid bursts of speed are required. When the driver pulls and holds the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second, all the powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sportiest setting.

Supreme traction and agility: BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, mechanical limited-slip differential at the front axle. 

The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensures that power is distributed between the front and rear wheels as required in any situation. The system is in constant communication with the chassis control network. A hang-on clutch with electro-hydraulic control allows drive torque to be directed to the rear wheels in a matter of milliseconds, providing significantly greater traction, directional stability, and balanced handling.

The all-wheel-drive system is assisted by the mechanical limited-slip differential built into the 7-speed Steptronic transmission of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive. This serves to limit the difference in rotational speed between the front wheels, boosting agility and handling dynamics when taking corners at speed and increasing traction over loose terrain or in adverse weather conditions.

Adaptive M suspension and sport steering as standard. 

Standard specification for the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive includes BMW’s adjustable Adaptive M Suspension. Pressure peaks inside the dampers are smoothed out with the help of additional valves that are active on the rebound side. As a result, the system offers comfortable response when absorbing minor bumps in the road surface combined with sporty damper characteristics in dynamic driving situations. And the standard sport steering pairs Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance with a very direct rack ratio.

Integrated braking system with the option of M Compound brakes. 

The integrated braking system fitted to the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is more than up to the task of keeping all the available power under control while providing excellent feedback through the brake pedal. It packages the brake activation, brake booster, and braking control functions within a single compact module, while an electric actuator is used to initiate the required brake pressure.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the first M performance model to offer optional M Compound brakes, comprising four-piston, fixed-caliper brakes with 15.2-inch drilled discs at the front wheels and single-piston, floating-caliper units with integrated parking brake and 13.0-inch discs at the rear. The inner-vented brake discs are composed of a grey cast iron ring and an aluminum chamber. The M Compound brakes offer very comfortable braking, superb feel, and stable stopping power under high loads. In addition to this, weight has been minimized and unsprung masses are substantially lower compared with conventional braking systems. The brake calipers are finished in high-gloss grey and bear the M logo.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation for sharper agility.

Contributing to the BMW X1 M35i xDrive’s inspiring combination of resolute handling poise and supreme agility is near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology. In this system, the traction control function is integrated into the engine management. This eliminates the long signal paths to the DSC control unit, meaning that the corrective inputs are applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems and with exceptional precision. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation thereby ensures optimum traction (even on slippery roads), unwavering straight-line composure under hard acceleration, and excellent directional stability in corners. 

19-inch M light-alloy wheels as standard.

M Double-spoke bi-color wheels measuring 19 inches in diameter mounted on all-season non-runflat tires are the final piece of the unique chassis specification of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive. Three 20-inch light-alloy wheel designs on performance non-runflat tires are optional.

Distinctive design with familiar M details: M kidney grille with vertical double bars, M exterior mirror caps, and a quartet of exhaust tailpipes. 

The M-specific exterior design cues of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive reflect the technical requirements of a performance vehicle in terms of cooling air provision and aerodynamic balance. A front apron with large air intakes ensures the engine, transmission, and brakes always remain within their optimum temperature windows, even under hard driving. Prominent side skirt extensions, a model-specific roof spoiler, and a rear apron with diffuser inlay showcase the performance-led character of the X1 M35i xDrive.

The BMW M kidney grille of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive bears the M logo and sports vertical double bars. Black M exterior mirror caps with twin-stalk design highlight the view in profile. At the back, four exhaust tailpipes – each with a diameter of 3.1 inches – integrated into the model-specific rear apron lets onlookers know that they’re looking at the most powerful model in the series. 

M-specific interior, optional M Sport seats.

The promise of a high-performance experience is reiterated inside the cabin. Highlights include an Alcantara-trimmed instrument panel, Aluminum Hexacube Dark interior trim elements, an anthracite-colored headliner, M pedals, the M-specific graphics of the BMW Curved Display – and, optionally, the BMW Head-Up Display – and an M leather steering wheel with shift paddles.

Standard equipment for the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive includes black Sensatec/Alcantara sport seats with blue contrast stitching. Leather-like Veganza upholstery is optional. The optional M Sport seats offer a wide range of electrical adjustment and feature an illuminated M logo in the upper section of the backrests.

The sporty interior ambience is balanced with its functionality. The rear seat of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is split 40:20:40, and the tilt angle of each section can also be adjusted. The cargo capacity can be expanded from 25.7 cubic feet to a maximum of 46.9 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded.

Sophisticated options enable precise individualization. 

The optional M Sport Professional Package adds extended Shadowline exterior trim and M Shadowline headlights to the X1 M35i xDrive’s already distinctive exterior design. Also included are red calipers for the standard M Sport brakes (the standard blue calipers may also be specified), and M Sport seats.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, BMW Live Cockpit Plus including the BMW Maps navigation system, M roof rails in high-gloss Shadowline, automatic tailgate operation, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system, plus four USB-C ports and two 12V power sockets.

A wide array of cutting-edge driver assistance systems can also be specified. Already fitted as standard are Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation, Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, and Active Park Distance Control. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go and Steering & Lane Control Assistant. Upgrading further to the Driving Assistance Professional Package adds Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance and the Traffic Jam Assistant, which allows attentive hands-free driving on limited access highways at speeds up to 37 mph as well as active navigation guidance, Automatic Lange Change, exit warning, and front and rear cross traffic warning.

The optional Premium Package includes the interior camera with anti-theft recording, Surround View with 3D View, Drive Recorder, and Video Augmented Reality overlays with navigation directions. Existing functions can be upgraded by means of the Remote Software Upgrades facility, which also makes it possible to add new functions (availability depends on the hardware fitted in the vehicle and the market conditions).

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and Operating System 9.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is BMW’s first model to feature the updated version of the control/operation system BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9. To make selecting and operating various functions and digital services more intuitive and comfortable, the latest generation of BMW iDrive offers a newly designed home screen and QuickSelect functionality. This brings an improved menu structure that takes its cues from consumer electronics devices. By showing the right information in the right place, the new BMW iDrive enhances the X1 M35i xDrive’s focused, assured driving experience. 

The updated BMW iDrive system with QuickSelect in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is underpinned by BMW Operating System 9. This technology enables a broader offering of digital content for information and entertainment, shorter function update cycles, and improved access to a host of specific online services. BMW iDrive with QuickSelect integrates with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and is therefore geared to operation using the touchscreen and natural language.

The new home screen of BMW Operating System 9 always displays the navigation system’s map view or other individually configurable graphics. On the same level, function icons appear in a vertical arrangement on the driver’s side of the control display, which the driver can navigate by swiping up or down. QuickSelect rapid-access tech allows the requested function to be accessed directly and without having to pass through a submenu. And once the relevant settings have been chosen, a tap on the home icon at the lower edge of the display is all it takes to return to the home screen. Alongside the home symbol now are the symbols for direct access to the climate control menu, the All Apps menu, and Apple CarPlay® / Android Auto™, if activated.

The new, flat menu structure makes activating functions and settings much more convenient. The on-board digital content – just like the hardware, in the form of the BMW Curved Display – is designed to enhance the driver focus for which BMW is renowned. To ensure intuitive operation while on the move, the graphical interface and menu structure feature a layout developed by BMW Group Design that is both consistent and characteristic of the brand.

Range of digital services can be expanded as desired. 

Among the standard features of the updated BMW iDrive in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the latest generation of the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. Added to which, the services and apps already introduced in the new BMW X1 are also available with BMW Operating System 9. For example, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and other voice-controlled assistants, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, BMW Remote Software Upgrades, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® / Android Auto™, and My Modes can also be used in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive. Specifying the optional Personal e-SIM also ensures the car’s antenna system is set up to work with 5G mobile technology.

BMW Operating System 9 also lays the groundwork for a highly customizable selection of additional digital services. The new BMW Digital Premium offering gives customers access to an expanded BMW ConnectedDrive Store. This means they can use all the apps for music streaming, news or gaming, on a subscription basis. BMW Digital Premium also features enhanced BMW Maps navigation functions and extended functionality for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, plus additional My Modes. Optional benefits include data usage for all digital services and the apps available from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, including music streaming. BMW Digital Premium can be downloaded in the vehicle from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, via the My BMW App or on the web. Customers can choose from monthly or annual payment plans, both of which provide maximum flexibility when putting together a selection of digital services tailored to their personal requirements.

Launched in 2009, the BMW X1 opened the door to a new vehicle category in the premium segment. Since then, the compact SAV has served as an attractive entry into the world of BMW X. A very well equipped compact SAV with functional versatility, the BMW X1 embodies an authentic experience of freedom and independence in day-to-day driving and on longer journeys.

Bold exterior, spacious interior.

The new BMW X1 represents a leap forward in design and utility and is an unmistakable member of the BMW X family with an appetite for adventure. The clean surface design combined with X-typical black trim at the lower edge of the body are key ingredients that only accentuate the vehicle’s rugged character. The new pronounced front end with the large, almost square BMW kidney grille boosts the lasting visual presence of the X1 even further, and standard 18-inch wheels emphasize the muscular stance. Front and back, you will find standard LED headlights with cornering lights and full LED taillights which provide a new and exciting interpretation of the L shape classically sported by BMW X models.

From the side, crisply sculpted surfaces for the wheel arches, doors and shoulders of the body generate an expressive interplay of light and shadow. A dynamically rising character line connects the front and rear wheel arch borders. The long roofline flows into a spoiler extending far over the rear glass. Together with the shoulder line above the flush door openers, which extends from the front wheel arches into the rear lights, this gives the silhouette a long, athletically taut appearance. Low-profile roof rails are finished in elegant standard Satin Aluminum while Shadowline trim is optional.

At the rear of the new BMW X1, horizontal lines, the narrow rear window, and flared wheel arches emphasize the width of the body. Chrome side details and a prominent trim plate under the rear bumper reprise styling cues from the front.

The exterior design of the new X1 sends a clear message: the all-new X1 combines everyday versatility with rugged sophistication that is ready to tackle rough terrain.  

The new BMW X1 has grown in length by 1.7 inches to 177.2, 0.9 inches in width to 72.6 inches, and 1.7 inches in height to 64.6 inches, giving it strong proportions. The new vehicle has a wheelbase of 106.0 inches, 0.9 inches longer than before. Track widths have increased by 0.8 inches to 62.3 inches front and rear, benefitting handling composure and on-road agility.

Moving inside, the new BMW X1 has seating for five adults and a versatile cargo area. Thanks to the increased width, both the driver and front passenger benefit from a noticeable increase in shoulder and elbow room. The rear seat backrests are configured in a 40/20/40 split and can fold down to expand the cavernous luggage capacity.

Customers can personalize their X1 from an extensive variety of 13 paint finishes Exciting new colors include Blue Bay Lagoon, Cape York Green, Utah Orange, Space Silver, and BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey.

Additional colors from the BMW color palette include Alpine White (non-metallic), Jet Black (non-metallic), Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Phytonic Blue, Portimao Blue, Storm Bay, and San Remo Green.

The new BMW X1 comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels. Vehicles equipped with either xLine design or the M Sport Package may upgrade to optional 19-inch wheels or – in a first for the BMW X1 – 20-inch wheels with performance non-runflat tires.

Segment-leading aerodynamics.

With a C_d of just 0.27, the shape of the new BMW X1 is the result of rigorous aerodynamic optimization, leading to enhanced driving dynamics and overall efficiency. Combined with the revised engine and transmission mounts, the aerodynamics also provide the driver an exceptionally quiet cabin.

Active air flap control systems for the kidney grille and lower intake adapt open and close according to the need for cooling air and the ambient temperatures, and when closed, also enables faster warm-up of the engine after a cold start and extended storage of heat when the engine is switched off.

Airflow around the vehicle is guided by air curtains in the outer sections of the front apron, flush-fitting door handles, aerodynamically optimized exterior mirrors and light-alloy wheels, a combination of a roof spoiler and side air deflectors around the rear window, a large-surface diffuser in the lower section of the rear bumper, a nearly flush underbody with precisely defined air guides, and hidden exhaust pipes.

xLine design package: Enhanced detailing brings added sophistication. 

The xLine design package brings elements which accentuate the already sophisticated character of the X1, including 18, 19, or 20-inch alloy wheels, high-gloss body cladding, additional Satin Aluminum exterior trim, and exterior mirror caps in Glacier Silver. 

The surrounds for the BMW kidney grille and grille bars on the xLine model are finished in in pearl-effect chrome, as are the side sill trim pieces and trim plates under the front and rear bumpers. The interior is further enhanced with SensaTec surfaces for the upper door trim and upper section of the instrument panel, and aluminum door sill strips. The standard illuminated interior trim in Black High Gloss can be upgraded to a Eucalyptus Open Pore Fine Wood trim or Aluminum trim with mesh effect.

Sharpening the dynamic edge: the M Sport model. 

Large cooling air inlets in the sides of the front end and a striking rear bumper with integral diffuser element proclaim the dynamic intentions of the X1 xDrive28i equipped with the M Sport Package. In M Sport guise, the new BMW X1 features exclusive 18-inch M V-spoke bi-color alloy wheels, Adaptive M suspension, and Shadowline trim. The M-specific interior appointments include sport seats, Aluminum Hexacube trim, and an M leather steering wheel with transmission shift paddles.

Interior design. A generous feeling of space paired with the latest BMW technology. 

The introduction of the all-new BMW X1 xDrive28i brings advances to the interior including extra space for those on board and their luggage, enhanced practicality, and an elevated digital technology experience. The new BMW iDrive powered by Operating System 8 represents a reimagining of the driver-centered cockpit design to focus on touch and voice control – via the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Through these advancements, a clean and simplified dash layout greets the driver every time they get behind the wheel.

The raised seating position, generous amounts of space which can be utilized in a variety of ways, and a sense of cutting-edge functionality define the driving experience in the new BMW X1. The design of its interior focuses on assured driving pleasure and versatility. Key features of this re-interpretation include the slender instrument panel, which serves as a stage for the BMW Curved Display, and a “floating” armrest with integral control panel. 

The BMW Curved Display – with its frameless glass surface angled towards the driver – brings an elegantly modern highlight to the cabin. Below it, the dashboard accentuates the width of the interior with its generously sized and horizontal decorative surfacing. Slim air vents cleverly designed into the dash ensure even distribution of fresh air around the interior, with side air vents integrated into the A-pillars. The door trim elements with their sculpted upper panels and integrated door handles stand out with stylish yet functional design. 

In the front section of the center console, directly below the central air vent, is space for two cup holders and a smartphone tray with indirect illumination on both sides. Secured by a movable clasp, phones can be placed here upright and visible to the driver and front passenger while being charged wirelessly. 

There is generous storage space under the center armrest.  Alongside the new toggle-style gear selector lever in the integral control panel are flush buttons for various vehicle functions such as the Start/Stop button, the volume control for the audio system and the My Modes button, which replaces the Driving Experience Control switch. 

Standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus features BMW Maps, a Bluetooth interface, four USB-C ports as well as a 12V power socket in both the center console and the cargo area. The optional Harman Kardon premium sound system raises the number of speakers to 12, with tweeters integrated into the door trim under high-quality stainless-steel grilles.

Standard ambient lighting provides a rich experience inside the cabin. The light distribution, brightness and color scheme can be configured via the iDrive menu, and this option also includes the dynamic interior light function, whose pulsating light signals an incoming phone call or an open door when the engine is running.

With a glass surface measuring about ten square feet, the optional panoramic glass sunroof floods the interior of the new BMW X1 with light and fresh air. The roller blind cover for the glass roof now has a multi-layer design and, like the glass panel itself, is electrically operated.

New seats offer more comfort, however long the journey. 

The newly developed seats in the 2023 X1 offer tailored looks, improved comfort over long distances, and extended functionality. This applies to both the standard seats and the optional sport seats, which feature prominent side bolsters and shoulder support, and adjustability of seat angle and depth.

The seats are upholstered exclusively in perforated SensaTec 2.0. Customers can choose from Oyster with contrasting stitching, Red/Black bi-color, Mocha with contrasting stitching, or Black.

Drivetrain: More power and a standard 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission. 

The 2-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine has been revised for 2023. The new engine incorporates a Miller combustion cycle, as well as a new dual (direct and port) injection system and a revised combustion chamber geometry. The engine now makes 241 hp between 4,500-6,500 rpm, and torque has increased to a substantial 295 lb-ft between 1,500-4,000 rpm. The engine is mated exclusively to a new 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). Together, they send the X1 xDrive28i from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds.

The latest generation of the DCT now features fully electric actuation, a widened gear ratio spread and greater internal efficiency.  This advanced transmission also now tailors shift strategy to the route topography and enables coasting in all drive modes except for Sport Mode when the gear selector is in position ‘S’.

The 7-speed DCT provides remarkably quick and smooth gear changes. It combines two sub-transmissions within a single housing, enabling it to pre-select the next gear prior to each gear change. The transmission automatically shifts into Park when the engine is switched off, and sensors can detect when the vehicle is parked on a slope and automatically engage the parking brake.

In vehicles equipped with the M Sport Package, gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel enable extremely rapid manual gear changes. The shift paddles also enable a Sport Boost function. When the driver pulls the left-hand shift paddle for at least a second, all the powertrain and chassis settings are primed to maximize their sporting responses for the most immediate acceleration possible.

BMW xDrive: assured power and traction no matter the weather or terrain. 

The BMW xDrive system intelligently controls the distribution of power to all four wheels to maximize traction, agility and directional stability in all weather and road conditions.

The xDrive system is linked to the chassis control systems at all times. A power take-off bevel gear on the front axle, a dual-section propeller shaft and a rear axle differential with an electro-hydraulically controlled hang-on clutch are used to efficiently split drive torque between the front and rear wheels as the situation demands. In driving situations that do not require all-wheel drive, the engine’s power is sent to the front wheels only. In adverse road conditions or highly dynamic driving situations, the hang-on clutch shifts drive power to the rear wheels in fractions of a second to significantly enhance traction, directional stability and the sporty handling expected from a BMW. 

Chassis technology and driving experience. Sporty and capable all-rounder for adventure and the everyday.

The powertrain and chassis technology on board the new BMW X1 gives it all the tools it needs to put driving pleasure at the customer’s fingertips and provide a standout all-round ownership experience. With its sporty, agile handling in everyday use, ability to make relaxed progress over rough terrain, and compelling long-distance comfort, the compact Sports Activity Vehicle delivers a balanced, well-sorted driving experience in any situation. 

Newly developed components for front and rear axle. 

Nearly all of the components of the single-joint spring strut axle at the front have been entirely redeveloped. New axle kinematics and increased rigidity both help give the X1 agile turn-in response and steering feel while mitigating torque steer. The supports for the hydromounts are now made from aluminum, shaving about six pounds from the vehicle’s weight. Following readjustment of the steering axle, the caster offset has been increased by some 15 percent, which has a positive effect on both steering feedback and straight-line stability. 

The modular three-link rear axle fitted to the new X1 has the ingredients for sporty handling. Featuring a unique design with remarkably high rigidity, it is partnered with a rear-axle subframe with a rigid mounting and promises precise wheel guidance even under high lateral acceleration. The springs and dampers take up less space thanks to their separate arrangement, freeing up additional room both for passengers in the rear and in the luggage compartment. The use of anti-roll bar mounts with high preload on both axles improves not just roll stabilization, but also steering precision during dynamic cornering. A new wheel bearing design that minimizes both friction and weight is an additional factor in the superior efficiency of the new BMW X1. 

The suspension and damping systems in the new BMW X1 have also undergone an extensive upgrade with a view to enhancing long-distance comfort. For the first time, the front axle has been equipped with extra, lift-related damping using an additional sleeve on the dampers. This reduces body movement when driving over small bumps, while also ensuring excellent transient behavior in corners. 

Adaptive M suspension with frequency-selective damping, a 0.6-inch drop in ride height and sport steering. 

Adaptive M suspension is available as an option for the first time on the 2023 BMW X1 xDrive28i. Both agility and long-distance comfort benefit from this suspension system’s mechanically controlled adjustable and frequency-selective dampers. Pressure peaks inside the dampers are smoothed out with the help of additional valves that are active on the rebound side. As a result, the system offers comfortable response when absorbing minor bumps in the road surface combined with sporty damper characteristics in dynamic driving situations.

Sport steering is part of the Adaptive M suspension option. This version of the Electric Power Steering system features a more direct rack ratio, along with the Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance also included with the standard steering.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation for extremely quick, precise response. 

The new BMW X1 also now comes with near-actuator wheel slip limitation to maximize agility and composure in challenging driving situations. Unique in this segment, this traction control system is integrated into the engine management, eliminating the long signal paths to the DSC control unit. This allows corrective inputs to be applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems and with exceptional precision. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation thereby ensures optimum traction on slippery roads, superb straight-line poise and assurance when accelerating hard, and excellent handling stability in corners.

The functions provided by the DSC system include not only anti-lock braking (ABS) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), but also a variety of stabilizing functions and the drive-off assistant. The Performance Control function gives the car even more agile handling by varying the distribution of drive torque to the front wheels according to the situation at hand. In order to optimize directional stability during heavy braking on surfaces offering differing levels of grip for the right-hand and left-hand wheels, a steering impulse is applied to help the driver correct the car’s line.

Integrated braking system optimizes handling characteristics. 

The new BMW X1 is equipped with an integrated braking system that delivers outstanding stopping power and superior pedal feel. This system brings together the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a compact module. The required brake pressure is triggered using an electric actuator, an operating principle that generates pressure more dynamically and ensures significantly faster and more precise interventions by the DSC. The integrated braking system generates a degree of stopping power that is matched exactly to the driver’s inputs, while also providing excellent feedback via the brake pedal.

The braking system in the new X1 employs single-piston floating-caliper disc brakes at the front and rear. A brake pad wear indicator is also included as standard and provides precise information on the remaining service life of the brake pads in the operating system’s relevant menu. 

The new BMW X1 additionally comes as standard with a tire pressure indicator for each wheel that provides an early warning of any loss of pressure, as well as a digital tire condition monitoring system. This function uses a cloud-based algorithm to detect pressure loss far sooner than the vehicle’s Tire Pressure Monitor can. This is made possible by a diagnostics function in the BMW backend that has been implemented with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). The driver is notified of any pressure loss together with the recommended course of action via the My BMW App. Statistical information and AI methods can also be employed to predict the wear behavior of the vehicle’s tires and thereby forecast the remaining tire life until the recommended minimum tread depth is reached. The digital tire diagnosis function can be set to automatically inform the customer of any tire-related technical issue requiring action.

Driver assistance systems. State-of-the-art technology enhances comfort and safety.

The new BMW X1 is fitted as standard with the latest version of the front-collision warning system with brake intervention, which brings additional functions to help prevent an accident. It comprises features such as Collision Warning, pedestrian and cyclist warning with braking function, and it can also warn the driver of pedestrians and cyclists who are parallel to the road and approaching the vehicle from the front or rear when turning right. The front-collision warning system also helps to increase safety when turning left. If a vehicle is approaching on the side of the road the driver needs to cross, visual and acoustic warnings are triggered, and the brakes are applied to prevent the driver from continuing with their maneuver. 

Active Blind Spot Detection is now standard, and there is a new exit warning function, which provides a safety boost when the vehicle is stationary. It activates warnings if a vehicle or cyclist is approaching the BMW X1 at speed and there is a risk of collision on either side of the vehicle if a door were to be opened. The driver or front passenger is alerted to the danger by flashing LEDs in the mirror or the ambient lighting. An acoustic signal is also emitted.

A new level of assisted driving for the X1: Driving Assistance Professional. 

The optional (start of production TBD) Driving Assistant Professional available for the first time on the BMW X1 offers new levels of comfort and safety on long-distance journeys. This camera- and radar-based system includes the Steering and Lane Control Assistant as well as Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function. Corrective steering inputs help the driver to keep the vehicle in the lane detected by the system. Active Cruise Control is capable of not only maintaining the preferred speed, but also automatically keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead and can bring the new BMW X1 to a halt if necessary. And when driving in tedious, dense traffic, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant allows attentive, hands-free driving at speeds up to 40 mph on limited access highways.

The Speed Limit Assist and route monitoring functions available when using Active Cruise Control add to the car’s assisted driving capabilities. Speed limits along the route detected either by the Speed Limit Info system or by using data from the navigation system can be anticipated in advance with the help of automatic Speed Limit Assist. Meanwhile, the route monitoring function looks ahead to reduce the car’s speed as appropriate when approaching a corner, a traffic circle, or an exit.

Parking Assistant, Reversing Assist Camera, Reversing Assistant. 

Drivers of the new BMW X1 also benefit from assistance when parking and maneuvering thanks to technology such as the optional Active Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear. This system uses visual and acoustic alerts and automatic brake inputs to help avoid collisions with obstacles to the front, sides, and rear of the vehicle when parking. The Back-up Assistant makes light work of backing up for distances of up to 150 feet by steering the vehicle along the same line it took when moving forward. 

The latest version of the optional Parking Assistant Plus offers an even wider range of uses. It helps the driver to select and park in spaces either parallel or perpendicular to the road. Instead of just using other vehicles as a guide to help it select a parking space and straighten the vehicle when parking, the system is now able to take its bearings from the curb. Parking Assistant can be used both to enter and to exit spaces. As well as the necessary steering inputs, it also carries out the acceleration, braking and gear changes required for the maneuver.

The functions contained in Parking Assistant Plus provide an excellent overview in many different situations. Surround View (including Top View), Panorama View and 3D View create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings, which is shown from various angles in the control display. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

The BMW Drive Recorder is another Parking Assistant Plus feature, which uses the driver assistance systems’ cameras to record video images all around the vehicle, so these can be stored and later either played back on the control display when the vehicle is stationary or exported via the USB interface. The Crash Recorder feature, when enabled, will automatically record up to 60 seconds of footage in the event of an accident.

With the Joy Recorder feature, the driver can also record high-definition videos up to 60 seconds in length while driving through spectacular countryside or performing spirited driving sessions.

If the vehicle’s alarm system is triggered, the Remote Theft Recorder can record video images from the four Surround View cameras at the same time as alerting the customer by sending a push notification to their smartphone via the My BMW App. 

Display and control/operation system, connectivity. The new BMW Operating System 8 and innovative digital services.

The new BMW X1 also treats its occupants to the latest-generation BMW iDrive in the form of BMW Live Cockpit Plus. Based on BMW Operating System 8 and running new-generation software along with exceptionally powerful connectivity and data processing, it takes the interaction between the driver and vehicle into the digital future. The new BMW iDrive system offers many more ways for drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment, and communication functions and digital services. 

The user experience on board the new BMW X1 is supported by the seamless interaction between the BMW Curved Display, voice control, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, and the optional BMW Head-Up Display. The new fully digital screen layout and the enhanced capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant mean the new BMW iDrive has been intentionally geared towards interaction using touch control and natural language.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with state-of-the-art graphics. 

Taking center stage in the interior of the new BMW X1 is the standard BMW Curved Display formed by a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a central information display with a screen diagonal of 10.7 inches. The screens merge into a single unit behind a continuous glass surface that curves towards the driver. 

The state-of-the-art graphics and the operating system’s menu structure have been designed with a smartphone-style appearance, making them perfect for intuitive touch control. The user interface impresses with its striking forms, dynamic light effects, strong depth of color and modern color worlds. Its graphic layout can be customized to suit the driving situation and personal preferences. 

  Welcome Scenario greets the BMW X1 driver. 

The engaging user experience starts before the driver has even reached the vehicle thanks to a newly devised Welcome Scenario. Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology allows precision location pinpointing between the vehicle and the key or compatible smartphone. 

When approaching the vehicle, around 10 feet away, a coordinated welcome sequence begins. It starts with an orchestrated lighting effect using the exterior and interior lights, including the light carpet in the entrance area. The vehicle then automatically unlocks when the driver is about 5 feet away. Upon entry, the BMW Curved Display plays a choreographed start-up animation and shows a customized welcome window for the driver with a personal greeting as well as handy suggestions and information. While this is happening, the BMW ID settings are loaded and the smartphone connected.

Personalized driving experience with the new My Modes. 

The new My Modes create an all-encompassing interplay of vehicle functions, displays and interior ambience. They can be selected easily by voice command or by using a button on the center console. Drivers of the new BMW X1 choose from Personal Mode, Sport Mode, or Efficient Mode. Each activates specific settings for the powertrain and steering, the style of the readouts on the BMW Curved Display and the interior lighting.

Personal mode engages a balance of vehicle characteristics and allows the displays and interior lighting to be adjusted to suit individual preferences. In Sport Mode, the powertrain and steering are configured for a dynamic driving style, while the pared-back readouts and red highlighting in the information display help the driver to focus on the task at hand. Efficient Mode, meanwhile, is clearly geared towards sustainable driving and configures the vehicle to keep consumption as low as possible. A calming shade of blue is implemented in the display readouts.

Precision navigating with Augmented View.

The new Augmented View function – optionally available to supplement the navigation system’s map view – enables exceptionally accurate navigational guidance. A live video stream from the driver’s perspective is shown on the control display and augmented by supplementary information that matches the context. At confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route. 

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. 

BMW Operating System 8 unlocks additional skills for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window, or operate the optional panoramic glass roof among other functions.

When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new forms of visualization appear in the gauge cluster, the control display and the optional Head-Up Display, emphasizing the system’s interactive character. The graphic appears in the right position for whoever is speaking to the assistant, representing visually how the system is listening attentively to what is being said. There is also a choice of two different visualization variants.

Interior camera for snapshots and checking inside the car using the My BMW App. 

With the new overhead interior camera, customers are also able to have pictures from the interior camera sent to their smartphone using the My BMW App’s remote function if they wish to glance inside the car to check whether bags or other items have been left there, for example. The interior camera is also activated when the Remote Theft Recorder is triggered.

The camera can also be used by the car’s occupants to take snapshots during the journey, allowing them to capture special moments and share them with friends and family. 

Personalization using the BMW ID. 

When customers interact with the new BMW iDrive in the new BMW X1, their user experience will be personalized to a much greater degree with the help of their BMW ID. When setting up the vehicle for the first time, simply scanning a QR code is all it takes to create a new BMW ID on a smartphone. Once BMW ID registration is complete, the newly registered BMW ID will be imported automatically into the X1, and the vehicle is added to the user’s My BMW App with no further action required. If the user already has the My BMW App and therefore a BMW ID, when they register their car with the My BMW App and a QR Code scan, their existing BMW ID is imported. The vehicle now appears automatically in the My BMW App and can be viewed by up to seven users.

If the BMW ID is linked to a vehicle key, it is uploaded when unlocking the car, and the driver is given a personal greeting on the control display. The profile image they’ve set up in the My BMW App also appears. At the same time, personal settings for seat position, exterior mirrors, navigation system, driver assistance functions, display layouts, shortcuts, favorites, and infotainment system settings will be loaded automatically. Personalized suggestions from the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, individually selected wake words, and privacy settings are also stored in the BMW ID. Personal data is protected from access by other users of the vehicle by linking a key or assigning a PIN.

Smartphone linking and integration of third-party services. 

Standard specification for the new BMW X1 also comprises optimized smartphone integration via both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, allowing customers to access an array of digital services such as the voice-controlled assistant Siri, the Google Assistant, various map apps, music streaming services, and the messaging service WhatsApp.

The wireless (WiFi) connection between smartphone and vehicle enables the services to be integrated directly into the car’s display/operation system. All the key smartphone information and apps can be viewed both in the gauge cluster, central information display, or optional Head-Up Display.

My BMW App: a universal digital interface between driver and vehicle.

The My BMW App acts as a universal digital interface that provides information on the vehicle’s status at any time. And it enables remote operation of functions such as vehicle locating, locking and unlocking the doors or monitoring the car’s immediate vicinity (Remote 3D View – when equipped with surround view cameras). Features also include the ability to send destination addresses from a suitably equipped smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system. The My BMW App additionally provides customers with a direct link to their BMW dealer and the BMW brand, allowing them to arrange service appointments, for example, or find out the latest BMW news.

BMW Digital Key Plus is turning into a full-function vehicle key. 

The optional BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to automatically lock and unlock their new BMW X1 with their Apple iPhone when close to the vehicle by means of security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology, making a conventional car key superfluous. There is no need to even remove the iPhone from their pocket as they approach the car or walk away. Once they have got in, the Apple iPhone can be simply left in the user’s pocket or placed in the smartphone tray.

The BMW Digital Key Plus can be set up using the My BMW App. The car owner can also share it – and therefore access to the vehicle – with up to five other users.

Always up to the minute: BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades for over-the-air updates. 

BMW is one of the key players in the field of over-the-air function upgrades. By 2020 it was carrying out the largest upgrade campaigns of any European carmaker.   Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 28, 2019…Today, BMW announces the updated 2020 X1 Sports Activity Vehicle. Since its introduction in 2015, the X1 has gone on to become BMW’s best-selling X vehicle worldwide. In the U.S., the X1 is the third most popular X model, behind the X3 and X5.

   

  The updated X1, available in front-wheel drive X1 sDr28i and all-wheel drive X1 xDr28i versions offers one of the roomiest cabins in its class combined with the technology, performance, comfort and agility attributes which make up the heart of all the models in BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle line.

   

  New exterior features

   

  The latest version of the BMW X1 SAV receives more modern, updated exterior styling to reflect the design details found in its newer, larger siblings, such as the X3, X5 and X7. New, optional, LED headlights with hexagonal iconography are complemented by new LED fog lights. The BMW kidney grills feature a new, sculptured design with larger openings. Changes to the front and rear bumper design are highlighted by sharper lines and larger openings with integrated LED fog lights and give the 2020 BMW X1 its more modern look.

   

  Towards the rear of the vehicle, new tinted LED taillights with L-shaped light bars accentuate the wider appearance of the exterior. The tailpipes have grown by 20mm, now 90mm in diameter.

   

  The M Sport Package features a new, redesigned and more aggressive aerodynamics package including a new front bumper, side skirts, wheel arch trim, and rear diffuser in body color.

   

  New interior features

   

  When opening the front door, the driver is greeted by a new two-tone LED “X1” welcome projection. Inside the cabin, the driver and passengers are able to interface with the 2020 BMW X1 via the standard 8.8 inch central control display screen with iDrive 6, Navigation and Apple CarPlay Compatibility.

   

  The instrument panel and floor mats features new, decorative contrast stitching while choosing the optional Dakota leather interior adds color-matched lower dashboard and door handles surfaces.

   

  A new electronic gear selector switch connects to an updated version of the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

   

  New colors   

   

  Three new metallic colors have been added to the options list: Storm Bay metallic, Jucaro Beige and Misano Blue metallic. Estoril Blue has been removed.

   

  Standard, non-metallic carryover colors include Alpine White and Jet Black. Carryover optional metallic paints include Black Sapphire Metallic, Glacier Silver Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, Mineral Grey Metallic, 3 Sparkling Brown Metallic, Dark Olive Metallic, Mediterranean Blue Metallic and Sunset Orange Metallic.

   

  Power and performance

   

  The 2020 BMW X1 is powered by the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine (SULEV rated) from BMW’s family of modular engines. Power output is 228 hp @ 5,000 – 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,450 - 4,500 rpm. Full torque is available in the low and mid-range, where the majority of daily driving takes place, allowing for quick and immediate acceleration when needed. Acceleration from 0 – 60 mph is accomplished in 6.3 seconds for the all-wheel drive X1 xDrive28i and 6.6 seconds for the X1 sDrive28i.

   

  The 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission in the 2020 BMW X1 features revised gear ratios for improved performance and offers fast and almost imperceptible shifts, improving comfort for the driver and passengers. A Sport Automatic transmission and steering wheel mounted shift paddles are included when the optional M Sport Package is selected.

   

  The BMW xDrive system, available on the X1 xDrive28i, works with the DSC Dynamic Stability Control system to transfer power to the rear wheels when it is needed, to reduce understeer in turns, improve traction when going uphill, on slippery surfaces and during more spirited driving.

   

  Wheels and Tires

   

  New design 18 inch Y-spoke bi-color and black wheels replace the previous Y-spoke wheel design. A new 19 inch M Double-spoke wheel replaces an outgoing 19 inch Y-spoke wheel design.

   

  Standard equipment on the 2020 BMW X1 includes 18 inch Y-Spoke bi-color wheels with 225/50R18 all-season run-flat tires. 18 inch Double-Spoke Jet Black wheels are available as a no-cost option. 19 inch Y-Spoke wheels with 225/45R19 performance run-flat tires are a stand-alone option.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – December 8, 2016 … Today the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2017 BMW X1 and 2017 BMW 2 Series a “Top Safety Pick”, continuing the company’s long-standing commitment to offering class-leading safety with each new model. In order to earn “Top Safety Pick”, a car must receive good ratings in five different crash tests — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, among other considerations.

The BMW X1 has been awarded for a second time in a row by the IIHS and is praised for its body and structure design, boosting its performance in the small overlap front crash test. The BMW X1 builds on the success of the previous generation by incorporating a roomier interior, greater efficiency and technology on the forefront of innovation.

Since its introduction in 2014, the BMW 2 Series has been recognized by the IIHS every year for four consecutive appearances. The 2 Series has been praised for its body structure integrity receiving a top rating in all crashworthiness tests.

The BMW X1’s and BMW 2 Series available front crash prevention system earn an advanced rating from IIHS. In the track tests at 12 mph, impact speed was reduced by an average of 10 mph. In the 25 mph test, impact speed was reduced by 7 mph. The system includes a forward collision warning component that meets National Highways Traffic Safety Administration criteria.

The passenger compartment of the all-new BMW X1 has large door pockets and offers a selection of smaller storage areas. A storage compartment is integrated into the instrument panel on the driver’s side. Positioned in front of the gearshift selector lever in the center console beneath a sliding cover are two cupholders. The front armrest for the driver and front passenger includes an integrated storage compartment. Customers can choose between two non-metallic and nine metallic exterior paint finishes, allowing them to tailor their all-new BMW X1 to their individual tastes. Estoril Blue metallic is exclusively offered in combination with the M Sport package. Mirroring brand specific characteristics, the all-new BMW X1 offers a broad range of individualization. The M Sport package, available later this year, provides a sportier, quicker and slicker look and feel thanks to the 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission featuring steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters supported by M Steering Wheel and M Sport suspension and Sport Seats.

Commanding presence, robust proportions, dynamic lines.

The signature BMW X model design cues shape the all-new BMW X1, while the height has been increased by an additional 1.7 inches, for a robust stance in all driving situations. The large, upright BMW kidney grille, lower air intake done in three sections and characteristic “six-eyed” looked formed by the twin round headlights and fog lamps give the new BMW X1 its distinctive face. Emphasizing the bold look of the all-new BMW X1, LED Daytime Running Lights are now standard with LED headlights available in conjunction with the Premium Package.

Flared wheel arches and lines converge in an X-shape into the kidney grille, contributing to the authoritative presence of the all-new BMW X1. Black borders on the lower edge of the body, the square contour of the wheel cutouts and the generous volume of the surfaces above them, all underline the solid statute of the compact BMW X-models. The center of the new BMW X1’s rear apron rises up significantly, mimicking the characteristic element of the front design. Their flat outline emphasizes the width of the rear end, with the vertically arranged black aeroblades which perfectly mirrors the roof spoiler, adding sporting accents.

The all-new BMW X1 offers standard 18-inch run-flat all-season tires with non-run-flat all seasons and a space saver spare available as a no-cost option for the first time. Our sport oriented customers can chose 19-inch run-flat performance tires as optional equipment.

The interior offers harmonious balance between driver focus and elegance befitting the classic style of a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle. The flat surfaces of the instrument panel and center console controls angled towards the driver providing great overview inside and outside the vehicle. The controls located in the lower section of the center console are surrounded by high-quality surfaces and are with a newly designed trim accent bar. The instrument cluster, consisting of two circular instruments and framed by a small binnacle, also helps the driver to focus on driving.

The iDrive operating system’s Control Display comes in the form of a high resolution 6.5-inch or, optionally, 8.8-inch freestanding monitor. The interior trim accent and air vents are surrounded by an interior trim spanning the full width of the instrument panel. The interior trim and accent strip extend through the door panel trim, with the effect that occupants in all seats are surrounded by premium surfaces with a uniform material and color structure.

Other standard interior features include: Power front seats with driver-side memory, Anthracite headliner, storage package and multifunction sport leather steering wheel. The all-new BMW X1 will be available from launch with an all-new 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo engine featuring a twin-tailpipe design that draws further attention to the sporty character of the all-new BMW X1. The BMW X1 xDrive28i features BMW’s new modular BMW EfficientDynamics engine, a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder unit with a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve lift, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. This powerful engine develops 228 hp at 5,000 rpm, representing the highest power output in the entry model class and thanks to BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology. The peak torque of 258 lb-ft, which is available between 1,250 rpm and 4,500 rpm ensures once again that the driving torque is effortlessly and instantly delivered for a dynamic and agile driving experience. Its instantaneous pulling power enables acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i CO2 emissions stand at 152– 49 grams per kilometer (in the EU test cycle, depending on the tire format specified). US EPA mileage estimates will be available closer to launch.

Flexible, quick to respond and more efficient than ever: the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the new BMW X1.

The compact, low-weight and efficient all-wheel-drive system distributes the engine’s power between the front and rear axle exactly as the situation requires – at all times. Working closely with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) allows the system to act preemptively to counteract any tendency on the car’s towards oversteer or understeer. The BMW xDrive system therefore ensures excellent traction, optimized directional stability and enhanced cornering dynamics in all weather and road conditions. Furthermore, the combination of the DSC system and xDrive also includes Hill Descent Control.

The xDrive system of the all-new BMW X1 consists of a single-speed bevel gear and a rear-axle drive unit with an electrohydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch than controls longitudinal torque distribution. The two are connected by a two-piece drive shaft. When required, the multi-plate clutch – with the help of an electrohydraulic pump – diverts up to 100 percent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels. It does so in less than 250 ms and unnoticed by the driver. The DSC system keeps the pump’s control unit constantly supplied with important data for analyzing the driving situation. The data includes the vehicle’s speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering lock, wheel-speed, pitch, accelerator position and the Driving Dynamic Control and DSC settings. This information is used to determine – and instantly generate – the ideal power split between the front and rear wheels, seamlessly and flexibly.

A recipe for enthralling agility: sophisticated chassis technology.

The chassis technology of the original X1 has been totally redeveloped for the new model with aluminum wheel hubs, as well as axle carriers and control arms made from high-strength steel, reduce weight and increase the rigidity of the front axle, which in turn helps to ensure an agile turn-in response and direction-changing precision. The rear axle also employs a high proportion of high-strength steels. Tube-shaped anti-roll bars at the front and rear axle, innovative axle mounting and specially tuned elastokinematics contribute to the agility and ride comfort of the all-new BMW X1, as do the connection of the dampers to the body via sophisticated three-way support mounts.

The all-new BMW X1 is equipped with standard Servotronic speed-sensitive steering assistance. This system allows parking and turning maneuvers to be completed safely and comfortably with little steering effort, and at higher speeds drivers can also benefit from steering precision and straight line stability as the steering effort is increased just the right amount.

The Driving Dynamic Control switch on the center console allows the driver to give the car’s set-up an even sportier, more comfort-oriented or efficiency-optimized character. Calling up COMFORT, SPORT or ECO PRO mode at the touch of a button adapts the responses of the accelerator pedal and steering as well as shift characteristics of the automatic transmission are also adjusted if the relevant equipment has been specified.

The Dynamic Stability Control stability system includes features such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assist system, Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Drying Braking and Start-Off Assistant and Performance Control. When DSC is deactivated, an electronic locking function for the front axle differential – known as Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) – comes into play. In tight corners the system brakes a spinning wheel as required and ensures power is diverted to the other wheel.

The enhanced functional effectiveness of all powertrain components, intelligent energy management, the rigorous application of BMW Lightweight technology and far-reaching measures designed to optimize aerodynamics all play a role in enhancing the efficiency of the all-new, second generation BMW X1. The innovations developed under the BMW EfficientDynamics umbrella delivers greater driving pleasure.

Optimized exterior design.

The all-new BMW X1 also has smooth underbody paneling, air deflectors on the front wheel arches and vertical aeroblades, which form a unit with the roof spoiler to channel the airflow around the rear of the car to best effect. The Air Curtains integrated into the outer air intakes channel the onrushing air precisely behind the front fenders causing it to hang over the wheels like a curtain and thus reduce turbulence.

Engine, gearbox and BMW xDrive: lower weight, improved efficiency.

The engine in the BMW X1 xDrive28i benefits from the latest incarnation of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with TwinScroll turbocharger and the most recently updated generation of VALVETRONIC. This latest 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine incorporates aluminum crankcase and cylinder head, forged steel crankshafts with an integrated balance shaft drive, low-weight pistons, forged connecting rods, friction-reduced cylinder coatings and map-controlled oil pumps.

With the reduced weight and enhanced internal efficiency, the new 8-speed Steptronic transmission also helps to optimize efficiency. The reduced converter slip of the new automatic transmission cuts energy losses, and its wider gear spread keeps revs lower at higher vehicle speeds contributing to the reduced emissions.

The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system developed for the all-new BMW X1 is considerably lighter with powertrain losses that are reduced by 30 percent in normal driving situations. The improved functional effectiveness of the new rear differential also helps to deliver a particularly efficient all-wheel-drive experience.

Intelligent energy management, ECO PRO mode with coasting function.

The BMW EfficientDynamics technology employed in the all-new BMW X1 includes intelligent energy management. Brake Energy Regeneration enables extremely efficient power generation for the on-board power supply. The Electric Power Steering and on-demand fuel and coolant pumps work with maximum efficiency.

ECO PRO mode – activated via the Driving Dynamics Control switch – also allows drivers of the all-new BMW X1 to make use of the coasting function. At speeds between 30-100 mph, the powertrain is disengaged when the driver takes his or her foot off the accelerator. Further efficiency gains have been achieved with items including reduced-friction wheel bearings.

BMW ConnectedDrive: Progress through intelligent connectivity.

The second generation BMW X1 also brings significant advances in the field of intelligent connectivity over its predecessor. The new selection of options designed to optimize comfort; safety and the use of infotainment functions, such as the Head-Up Display, take their cues from those available from other BMW Sports Activity Vehicles.

BMW ConnectedDrive features on the new BMW X1 now include the newest BMW Head-Up Display which projects driving-related activities directly onto the windshield. Another, in many respects pioneering option is the Navigation system, which comprises a bigger 8.8-inch Control Display, an instrument cluster with extended features, including a split-screen function as well as the BMW Head-Up Display. Two very special vehicles will soon arrive to reflect the X1’s special capability to take full advantage of winter fun.  The BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition will be available at BMW Centers, especially tailored for those who make the most of winter on the slopes.  The BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride is a reflection of the adrenaline rush of full-speed downhill fun. This unique concept will make its debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November just as the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition becomes available.

BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride: Providing limitless fun on and off the slopes

Youthful, sporting design and lifestyle-oriented functionality shape the face of the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride. The concept car is the result of a three-year cooperation between BMW and winter sport equipment supplier K2. It embodies both the agile and surefooted driving characteristics of the BMW X1 even – thanks to BMW xDrive, under challenging conditions – and the intense thrill of winter sport. The BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride blends bespoke exterior features with an exclusive roof structure and refined additions to interior details. Valencia Orange metallic paintwork is complemented by a distinctive graphic whose design takes its cues from a limited-edition K2 ski. A central element of this crossover graphic is the stylized image of a fox, which forges ahead of a dynamically penned X from the rear of the car to the front doors.

The exterior design of the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride backs up this energy-laden graphic with a sprinkling of other distinctive characteristics which accentuate the sporting instincts of the compact BMW X model to impressive effect. An extra eight millimeters of suspension travel over the standard model and 19-inch light-alloy wheels in Ferric Grey with polished spokes exude a feeling of power and presence. The Ferric Grey trim of the front and rear sills and side skirts emphasize the car’s uncontained forward momentum over snow and loose ground. Dark tinted side windows with matt Black surrounds and the roof rails – likewise painted matt Black – form an appealing contrast to the rich colors of the body surfaces.

Roof boasts innovative ski rack and powerful Harman Kardon hi-fi sound to fuel the apres-ski party.

The unique roof structure specially developed for the concept car is made from milled aluminum. Its broad functionality is reflected in an asymmetric structure: two luggage boxes and a ski carrier are positioned alongside one another. The ski carrier, which can be found on the front passenger side of the car, has an innovative retaining mechanism, while the skis are held at an angle to make their distinctive surface design particularly visible. Designed exclusively for the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride, the skis also feature the fox graphic, as well as a color scheme inspired by wood, brushed aluminum and carbon surfaces. Its White and Valencia Orange running surfaces display the brand logos of BMW and K2 on either side of a broadly spread X.

A sound system from Harman Kardon is installed in the two luggage boxes on the driver’s side. High-end hi-fi systems from the specialist brand also provide a dynamic audio experience in standard series-produced BMW models. The two-way loudspeakers installed in the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride generate output of 320 watts and turn the cars into a powerful sound stage for après ski fun with a difference at the end of the valley run. A Class D amplifier with 2 x 550-watt output, a 500-watt subwoofer and a high-quality microphone from AKG are also on hand for those spontaneous parties in the snow. And the transparent sounds can be complemented by visual effects, for good measure. The sporting characteristics and exclusive style of the BMW Concept K2 Powder Ride are also underlined by bespoke interior design. Black Nappa leather with orange-colored contrast stitching for the seats and door trim and interior trim strips in exquisite Fineline Bay wood trim conjure up an ambience imbued with quality and individual sophistication. In keeping with the theme, and as a mirror image of the exterior’s contrasting effects, the black floor mats have reflective piping and orange-colored accents.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – August 23, 2012… BMW of North America today launched the ‘X1 Restore the Outdoors’ social media program in Seattle, WA which will run through September 10 in New York City.  X1 Restore the Outdoors is a social good program that gives back to the outdoor places we love including parks, beaches, forests and recreational locations across the country.

The X1 will travel through the United States for two and half weeks, stopping at 12 predetermined locations. Drivers will take an Instagram photo at each stop and share it at the www.RestoretheOutdoors.com Facebook page. For every “Like” the photo receives, BMW will donate one dollar back to that location – up to $10,000 for each location.  You give a like. BMW donates a buck.

The new 2013 BMW X1 will arrive in authorized BMW Centers in the fall of 2012 starting at an MSRP of $31,545 (including $895 Destination and Handling).

The X1 has proven to be highly successful, with sales having already exceeded 275,000. As has been the case with other models before it, the BMW X1 finds itself in a competitive market segment that it virtually spawned.  Unlike other BMW SAVs, X1s destined for the US will be built in BMW’s Leipzig, Germany plant. The popularity of the X1 around the globe has proven so great that X1s for the Chinese market will now be built in a newly opened plant at Tiexi in Shenyang Province.

The arrival of the BMW X1 to the US coincides with an update that includes exterior and interior refinements as well as a host of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies.  All models feature Brake Energy Regeneration while the X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i models also benefit from Auto Start/Stop and ECO PRO mode to further reduce fuel consumption.

Another element of the update is the availability of BMW Lines for the first time in an SAV, as an alternative to the base trim level. Both the BMW xLine and BMW Sport Line offer exclusive design and equipment features. The xLine emphasizes the robust versatility of the new
BMW X1 while the Sport Line accentuates its performance and handling. For enthusiasts who want to accentuate the sporting character of their X1 even further, an M Sport Package is also available.

Design: New touches highlight its elegance, versatility and sportiness.

Typical BMW proportions, vibrant surfaces and signature BMW X model design cues shape the appearance of the X1. A sweeping hood, long wheelbase and set-back passenger compartment emphasize its dynamic talent, while attractive light and shade effects hint at its inherent agility. The versatility and ruggedness of a BMW X model are reflected in elements such as the black bordering at the lower edge of the body and the muscular wheel arches.

Above all, the new BMW X1 conveys even more strikingly the powerful stance that distinguishes BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicles. In the case of the X1, the look reflects the unique combination of the elevated seating position and flexible utility of an SAV with the driving dynamics of a BMW sports sedan.

In addition to the inserts in the front and rear fascia and the special side skirt covers, the circular foglamps positioned under the headlights add to the hallmark features of a BMW X model. Beyond this, the new BMW X1 boasts attractive touches of sporting luxury.

When viewed from the front, the powerful stance of the new BMW X1 on the road is immediately evident. The path of the car’s lines, which converge along the sides of the BMW kidney grille, follows the V-shaped contours of the hood, forging downwards and outwards in the lower section of the bumper to create the sweeping “X” familiar from the X1’s larger siblings. The striking lines go hand in hand with a detailed execution of the body’s surface styling, signaling a sporty character. The foglamps are now level with an extra crease line that forms a discreet scoop along the upper edge of the lights and continues into the fenders. Newly designed headlights afford a detailed view of the car’s advanced light technology. In the upper area, a chrome accent strip now cuts across the top of the twin round headlights, while an LED accent light – included as part of the optional xenon light package – ensures the classic BMW focused look. The available xenon headlights also feature LED light rings for the daytime running lights.

The character line that rises steadily to the rear of the car, an additional line extending the contours of the side glass graphic as it runs rearwards, and powerfully flared wheel arches allow the BMW X1 to project a very distinctive profile. The pronounced side skirts are a signature feature of BMW X models, while the directional indicators are now integrated into the exterior mirrors.

Rear view: Focused emphasis on a wide and powerful stance.

The premium feel of the new BMW X1 is also underlined at the rear by the new subdivision of fascia, bumper and undertray. Repositioned reflectors are now bordered by surfaces painted in body color. As a result, the black plastic elements are slimmer, while the silver-colored undertray has a more striking surface structure. Furthermore, the contours of the LED taillights now flow harmoniously into the line of the tailgate handle. A stronger emphasis on the horizontal lines gives the X1 both a robust and sporty appearance.

Interior: Precise lines, high-quality materials, sophisticated color scheme.

The modifications to the design of the new BMW X1 interior create an even more vivid showcase of the sporty driving pleasure and cutting-edge versatility. The side of the center console, angled towards the driver, is now shallower and boasts a particularly high-grade surface quality. This highlights the driver-focused principle of the cockpit design. The panel for the sound and climate system controls now has a high-gloss black surface to match the air vent surround.

The new BMW X1 comes with a storage compartment in the center of the instrument panel. In vehicles with the optional navigation system, this houses the central Control Display for the iDrive operating system. Chrome accents on the side surrounds of the onboard monitor highlight this feature. High-quality electroplated surrounds for the gearshift lever and the center console cup holder as well as a chrome clip on the headlight switch add the finishing touches to the interior’s exclusive ambience.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology: Available in four or six-cylinder form.

The BMW X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i feature BMW’s newest 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo
4-cylinder engine (N20).  This dynamic and efficient engine delivers maximum power of 240 hp at 5,000 rpm while the maximum torque of 260 lb-ft is developed at just 1,250 rpm and remains constant up to 4,800 rpm. It is mated to BMW’s latest 8-speed Steptronic automatic. This combination powers the X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i from 0-60 mph in 6.2 and 6.3 seconds respectively. This level of responsiveness is matched with impressive efficiency.  Preliminary EPA mileage estimates are 24 mpg city/33 mpg highway/27 mpg combined for the X1 sDrive28i while the AWD X1 xDrive28i has preliminary EPA estimates of 22 mpg city/
30 mpg highway/25 mpg combined.

This engine is the most powerful in a new generation of 4-cylinder engines designed in accordance with the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, which aims to combine increased driving enjoyment with reduced fuel consumption and emissions. In technical terms, this
4-cylinder engine is modeled on the current multi-award-winning inline 6-cylinder with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology (N55), which is the benchmark in its class for dynamic power delivery and impressive efficiency. This world-exclusive technology combines High Precision Direct Injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing with twin-scroll turbocharging.

VALVETRONIC, Double-Vanos and High Precision Direct Injection.

The combination of a high power output and a simultaneous reduction in emissions is achieved by VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing. The latest generation of the VALVETRONIC system features a faster-acting, optimized stepper motor with integrated sensor. Seamlessly variable control of intake valve lift dispenses with the need for a throttle butterfly. Instead, the air mass is controlled inside the engine, resulting in faster response. At the same time, pumping losses have been reduced to a minimum.

The excellent efficiency is also down to the High Precision Direct Injection system. Centrally positioned between the valves, solenoid injectors precisely control the supply of fuel. The fuel is injected very close to the spark plug, with a maximum injection pressure of 200 bar (2900 psi), resulting in clean and homogeneous combustion. The cooling effect of the directly injected fuel also results in a higher compression ratio than on port injection engines, bringing further efficiency improvements.

X1 xDrive35i: Exclusive to the North American market – the most dynamic X1 of all

Enthusiasts in North America will have access to the most dynamic model in the X1 line, the X1 xDrive35i featuring, BMW’s award-winning 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine (N55). The N55 has been setting standards from the start, as the pioneer of a new generation of engines in which BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing plus a twin scroll turbo made its debut. It will be mated to a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

With a maximum power rating of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm, the 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder reflects the sporty personality of this X1 variant and helps it deliver unparalleled performance. And the high peak torque of 300 lb-ft, on stream between 1,200 and 5,000 rpm, ensures that the power is effortlessly and instantly delivered.

In order maximize available traction so as to take full advantage of its performance potential,  the X1 xDrive35i, as the name implies, will be offered exclusively with xDrive all-wheel drive. As a result, the new BMW xDrive35i can show off its prowess with a 0 to 60 mph sprint time of just 5.3 seconds. EPA mileage estimates for this model are 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway/
21 mpg combined.

Wide-ranging BMW EfficientDynamics technology, ECO PRO mode marks its debut in the BMW X1.

In line with the enhanced engines and transmissions, the new BMW X1 includes a range of technologies that boast optimized efficiency. All model variants come equipped with Brake Energy Regeneration.

An ECO PRO mode and the Auto Start-Stop function are available in the new BMW X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i models. ECO PRO provides efficiency-optimized driving with targeted adjustments to the accelerator mapping and the shift characteristics of the automatic transmission. Moreover, the output of electrically operated functions such as the seat heating, climate control system and exterior mirror heating are regulated to ensure highly efficient energy management. A special display informs the driver of the extra range gleaned through these measures.

BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system: Intelligent, fast and precise for enhanced driving pleasure.

Available with both powertrains, the new BMW X1 can transfer power to the road with the help of BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. An electronically controlled multi-plate clutch allows the system to vary power between the front and rear wheels, thereby guaranteeing maximum traction, the highest possible safety, outstanding handling and optimal power development regardless of weather or road conditions.

By virtue of being integrated with Dynamic Stability Control, the xDrive control system is able to analyze every driving situation with great precision. It can thus counteract any tendency towards oversteer or understeer by distributing power as required before the driver is even aware of the need.

What’s more, the collaboration between xDrive and DSC enables Hill Descent Control for safe passage down an incline at an automatically regulated speed.

As a means of sharpening the handling character, the X1 xDrive28i and xDrive35i get Performance Control as part of the available M Sport Package. Performance Control helps the X1 xDrive35i maintain a more neutral handling character by adjusting the xDrive torque split to 20% front/80% rear in steady state cornering. Performance Control can also apply the inside rear brake while also applying a little more power to the outside wheel (to compensate for the additional drag of the brake) in order to help rotate the vehicle.

BMW Lines are available for all models, allowing drivers to tailor their new BMW X1 with individual style based on their personal preferences. The BMW xLine allows the sturdy versatility of the sub-compact BMW X model to be emphasized. It includes undertray elements for the front and rear fascias, side skirt covers, air intake and kidney grille slats in Titanium Silver matt finish, as well as exclusive 18-inch alloys in Y-spoke design. The distinctive charisma of the new BMW X1 is also reflected in the interior, starting with entry strips bearing the lettering “BMW xLine”, a leather-wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel, as well as exclusive interior trim strips in Dark Copper high-gloss and floor mats with color-matched piping. In conjunction with the BMW xLine, optional Nevada leather upholstery is available, with the exclusive color shades Terra and Oyster which are also used on the door trim panels and the lower section of the dashboard. The head rests feature a distinctive embossed “X”. As an additional option, interior trim in Fineline Bay matt fine wood finish is available exclusively in combination with the BMW xLine.

The stand-out agility and dynamics of the new BMW X1 within the competitive environment can also be highlighted through exclusive and meticulously matched design and equipment features. Cue the BMW Sport Line, which features a front and rear undertray, side skirt covers, air intakes and kidney grille slats in Black high-gloss, tailpipe finishers in Black Chrome, exclusive 18-inch double-spoke light alloys, and entry strips with “BMW Sport” lettering. Solid body structure, comprehensive safety equipment.

Like all BMW X models, the new BMW X1 boasts a body with high torsional stiffness which, thanks to intelligent lightweight design, pairs extreme robustness with optimized weight. In the interests of passive safety, the impact forces in the event of an accident are diverted along several load paths, absorbed by precisely defined deformation zones and thus kept away from the stable passenger cell.

As well as front and side airbags for the front seats, standard interior equipment includes side curtain head airbags for both rows of seats, three-point inertia-reel seat belts on all seats, belt latch limiters and belt latch tensioners in the front and ISOFIX child seat mounts in the rear. All restraint systems are controlled by a central electronic system. Immediately after its market launch, the BMW X1 was awarded the maximum 5-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test.

Interior allows diverse uses with modern functionality.

The new BMW X1 also showcases its versatility when it comes to carrying stuff. The rear seatback can be split 40:20:40, with the three sections folding down individually or jointly according to need and can be adjusted in ten stages. The angle of tilt for the rear-seat backrest ranges from 31° – a particularly comfortable angle for passengers – all the way to a near-vertical cargo position of 1°. This facility alone means the luggage space can vary between 12.7 cubic feet (360 liters) and 17.0 cu.ft (480 liters), with a capacity of 14.8 cu. ft. (420 liters), according to European measure, when the rear seatback is in its normal position. Folding all three seat elements down fully creates a virtually flat cargo floor with a loading capacity of 47.7 cu. ft. (1,350 liters), again according to European measure. SAE volume measures are not yet available but, either way, these numbers indicate a surprising amount of cargo space for a vehicle of this size.

Two 46-inch golf bags can be stowed widthways or, after folding down the central section of the seatback, lengthwise. The through-loading aperture between the outer rear seats can also be used for two snowboards or four pairs of skis. The passenger compartment offers a wide range of storage spaces and compartments of various sizes, as well as generously sized door pockets. Additional transportation potential is opened up by roof rails and a storage compartment package.

Premium character thanks to comprehensive standard equipment and high-grade options.

The range of standard equipment on the new BMW X1 guarantees driving enjoyment and comfort at a premium level. The scope includes  automatic climate control, electrically adjustable heated exterior mirrors, foglamps, LED taillights, chrome tailpipe finishers, a multi-function leather-wrapped steering wheel, an onboard computer, and a hi-fi sound system with CD player, AUX-IN connection, HD radio and a two-line display showing computer data, telephone numbers and music track titles. Other standard features include roof rails, Rain Sensing windshield wipers and automatic headlights.

Many features are standard equipment of the X1 xDrive35i which are also available on the X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i. These include the panoramic glass sunroof, electrically adjusted front seats, Servotronic steering, Adaptive Xenon Headlights and automatic high beams.

The range of optional extras for all models includes, among other features, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System and Sirius/XM satellite radio with a one-year subscription, as well Chrome-line exterior trim.

BMW ConnectedDrive, meanwhile, offers a wide choice of options for optimizing the convenience, safety and infotainment functions of the car.

Accurate and safe maneuvering is facilitated by the Driver Assistance Package which includes Park Distance Control and the rear-view camera, which relays its images live to the Control Display of the iDrive operating system.  

BMW Assist, a globally unique mobility service, comprises among other features a telephone information service and the enhanced Automatic Collision Notification function with automatic detection of the vehicle location. BMW Assist with Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity is part of the Technology Package which also includes the on-board navigation system.

Other innovative technologies allow the integration of the Apple iPhone and other smartphones as well as music players, including the use of Internet-based services. The Apps option enables iPhone users, among other things, to receive Internet radio stations and to display Facebook and Twitter posts on the onboard monitor. With BMW Apps, iPhone users can access and listen to music streaming services like Pandora and MOG.

The BMW X1: more sporting and efficient than ever.
The variants of the BMW X1 offered in the US market will be powered by BMW TwinPower Turbo gas engines. This package of technology consists of twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos variable camshaft control. In both the award-winning 6-cylinder inline engine under the hood of the BMW X1 xDrive35i – developing 300 hp – and the 240 hp 4-cylinder engine powering the BMW X1 sDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive28i ensure instantaneous power delivery, impressive acceleration and exceptional efficiency.

Both engines are paired with an automatic gearbox and extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology. Features including the Auto Start-Stop function (28i only), Brake Energy Regeneration and demand-based operation of ancillary units all help to achieve a blend of performance and fuel economy unique in the market.

The BMW X1 sDrive28i with customary BMW rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i will be offered exclusively in the US market. The intelligent all-wheel drive of the BMW X1 xDrive35i and BMW X1 xDrive28i varies the distribution of drive between the front and rear wheels, as required. This electronically controlled power distribution ensures optimum traction and unbeatable directional stability in all weather and road conditions, as well as noticeably sportier responses through dynamically taken corners.

The BMW X1 sDrive28i, the X1 xDrive28i and the X1 xDrive35i will retail for $31,545, $33,245 and $39,345 respectively (including $895 Destination and Handling).

Successor to 5 Series long wheelbase will launch in autumn

Company expands production capacity in China

Munich/Beijing. The BMW Group will also produce its X1 Sports Activity Vehicle in China in the future. “The BMW X1 could be one of the first products for our new plant in Tiexi in the Shenyang region. We are currently exploring this possibility together with the authorities here in China,” said Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Norbert Reithofer in Beijing on Wednesday. The facility currently builds BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series models for the Chinese market.

Following the launch of the new 5 Series, a successor to the 5 Series Long Wheelbase version will also be produced and sold only in China. Production of the new vehicle will begin in autumn of this year. The Long Wheelbase version of the 5 Series has proved extremely successfully in China, with more than 70,000 vehicles sold since 2006.

In light of the promising opportunities for growth, the BMW Group will continue to expand its presence and its purchasing activities in China over the coming years. “We are confident that this market will continue to see strong growth over the next few years. Our goal is to participate in that growth over the long term,” Reithofer explained. “With our new plant in Tiexi, we will be increasing our production capacity in China to 100,000 vehicles a year from 2012 on. Over the long term, we anticipate the two plants having combined potential for as many as 300,000 vehicles a year – depending on market trends. We may realistically need this potential over the long term”.

The BMW Group announced that it would build a second production plant in China in November 2009. The investment volume for the new plant amounts to a total of 560 million euros; the BMW Group and its partner, Brilliance, will each defray half of this amount. Construction work is scheduled to begin in early June 2010, with the start of production slated for 2012. The expanded capacity in Shenyang will create a total of around 1,000 new jobs. 600 new employees have already been hired and are currently being prepared for their roles.

China is currently the BMW Group’s fourth largest market worldwide. Last year the BMW Group sold more than 90,000 vehicles in mainland China. In the first quarter of 2010, the company increased deliveries by 106% to reach a total of 34,179 vehicles. “China is, and will remain, one of the most attractive automobile markets in the world,” added Reithofer. In 2002 – before the plant in Shenyang was built and opened in 2003 – the BMW Group’s retail volume in mainland China was just under 6,700 vehicles.

According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), a total of around 478,000 premium automobiles were sold in China last year. The Association estimates that the market for premium vehicles in China will grow to more than 1.5 million units a year by 2020.

Resource-efficient production plays an important part in the BMW Group’s sustainability strategy and at the Shenyang location also. Through rigorous optimisation of its production processes, the existing plant in Da Dong reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions alone by 12 percent and water consumption by as much as 40 percent between 2008 and 2009.

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey – July 1, 2009… It was confirmed today that the BMW X1 is planned to debut in the United States in calendar year 2011. The X1 has been conceived with the flexibility to offer traditional rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations, as well as a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powertrain choices. In light of rapidly evolving US market demands, fuel prices, and regulatory standards, elements of the X1’s US launch plan, including engine and drivetrain configurations, will be forthcoming closer to the time of launch.

The BMW X1 will debut in Europe this fall with a choice of four engines - one gasoline and three diesels - and will be available in rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations. The X1 will set new benchmarks in the premium compact segment for efficiency, comfort, utility, and of course driving dynamics. Achieving up to 5.2 L/100km (45.2 miles per US gallon) on the European test cycle, the BMW Advanced Diesel-powered X1 sDrive18d will provide remarkable fuel efficiency while still achieving a top speed of 200km/h (124mph). Each drivetrain choice for the X1 will showcase the latest results of BMW’s EfficientDynamics engineering strategy, which is focused to reduce emissions and consumption while enhancing the performance expected of any BMW.

Exterior design:

at the top edge. The position of the headlights and foglamps brings back the
three-eye face of other BMW X models.
• Six contour lines and the three-dimensional shape define the surface design
of the engine compartment lid emanating a strong feeling of dynamic
performance. The inner lines taper out sharply to the front towards the BMW
kidney grille, the outer lines continue into the shoulder contours at the side.
• Through its centre of gravity visibly positioned right in the middle, the
small distance between the front axle and the steering wheel, and the almost
square contours of the wheel cutouts, the side view of the BMW Concept X1 draws
a clear parallel to other BMW X models. Black body surrounds made of a special,
robust synthetic material highlight the clear orientation towards the wheels.
The sturdy, silver-coloured roof railing extends far to the rear, determining
the course of the roofline together with the spoiler at the back.
• Characteristic rear end with L-shaped rear light clusters ensuring a
homogeneous light effect thanks to LED light tubes. Raked to a low angle, the
rear window gives the BMW Concept X1 a truly sporting touch, the horizontal
lines emphasising the sheer width of the vehicle.
• As a special design feature specific to this model, three-dimensional
surrounds encompass the headlights and rear light clusters and help to create
the special graphics of the side windows.
