Colțești, Romania. After six days of riding, around
1,500 kilometres and an exceptionally demanding route through the
Romanian Carpathians, the tenth BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy
has been decided. Team Germany (Fabi Fenner, Norman Pleissner, Flo
Thomann) won the men’s competition with 203 points, while Team Europe
(Chrissie Harcourt, Anja Filak) prevailed in the women’s competition
with 200 points. The anniversary edition went farther, higher and was
more technical than ever before – across narrow forest trails,
washed-out mountain paths, riverbeds and historic high-altitude
routes. At the same time, it remained true to what defines the GS
Trophy: a shared adventure in which team spirit, precision, endurance
and mutual support matter more than outright speed.

The outcome was decided only in the final challenge. Ahead of the
last day, just two points separated Team International and Team Europe
in the women’s competition, while Team Germany defended an
eleven-point lead over Team Europe in the men’s competition. Under
maximum pressure, the eventual winners demonstrated precisely the
qualities that defined this GS Trophy: trust, composure and consistent teamwork.

In the women’s final, Chrissie Harcourt from Great Britain and
Anja Filak from the Netherlands rode with control and close
coordination to secure victory for Team Europe. Team Germany,
comprising Fabian Fenner, Norman Pleissner and Florian Thomann,
crowned a consistently strong performance throughout the week with
overall victory in the men’s competition.

The winners: Team Germany and Team Europe.

BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy 2026 Romania – Final standings.

Women’s teams:
1. Europe – 200 points
2. International – 184
3.
Australia – 164
4. China – 159
5. Germany – 146

Men’s teams:
1. Germany – 203 points
2. Europe – 147
3. Ukraine –
144
4. Australia – 138
5. Japan – 135
6. Korea –
131
7. International – 128
8. China – 102

Teamwork makes the dream work.

The winners of the women’s competition, Team Europe, had not known
each other before this event: one came from Wales in the United
Kingdom, the other from the Netherlands. Over the course of the event,
they grew together as a team and, with mutual support, overcame every
obstacle on their way to victory.

Chrissie Harcourt, Team Europe: “I can hardly
describe this feeling. My head is a little all over the place;
everything feels a bit shaky. It will take a while for it to truly
sink in. I am incredibly proud of both of us.”

Anja Filak, Team Europe: “We were certainly the
smallest team in the competition. But we rode like one body, as one
unit. Chrissie is amazing. She gave me a lot of advice, and I was able
to follow her and make it through. I gained more confidence because I
knew I could follow her and stay focused. I took everything she told
me over these days very much to heart and tried to put every piece of
advice into practice – and it worked!”

What made the 2026 GS Trophy special.

The tenth edition set new benchmarks: six days, around 1,500
kilometres and approximately half of the route away from paved roads.
For three consecutive days, the teams spent eleven to twelve hours on
the move; day three featured more than 300 kilometres, including 170
kilometres of trails. Cold temperatures, dense fog, wet camps and
constantly changing terrain made recovery and personal organisation
just as important as riding skill.

The most formidable challenges awaited high in the Carpathians: the
eight-kilometre Metzeler Enduro Navigation Challenge on narrow single
trails, the uncompromising climbs to the Strategica Mountain Road and
an exposed descent along a narrow goat track. Riverbeds, deep fine
gravel, wet grassy slopes and washed-out forest tracks added to the
challenge. The combination of distance, technical difficulty,
navigation and fatigue made Romania one of the toughest and, at the
same time, most impressive GS Trophies to date.

Another defining feature was the interplay between authentic
adventure and international community. Under the motto “Back to
Basics”, 30 riders from 13 nations experienced Romania’s wild
landscapes, historic high-altitude routes and warm hospitality. The
BMW R 12 G/S proved itself as a versatile competition bike – powerful,
precise and controllable on every type of terrain.

Press Contact: Oleg Satanovsky
Tel: +1-201-307-3755
E-mail: oleg.satanovsky@bmwna.com

BMW Motorrad,R 12

Six Days. One epic GS adventure.</pp:summary>

Colțești, Romania
. The tenth BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy got
underway yesterday. Camped on the edge of the village of Coltesti,
overlooked by a 13th century clifftop fortress, deep in the
Transylvanian region, the competitors are surrounded by a natural
wilderness landscape. Encircled by the Carpathian mountains and some
of Europe’s few great undisturbed natural forests – home to apex
predators such as grey wolves and brown bears, in their thousands –
this is a rare European wilderness.

Rugged terrain in the form of dense forests, gravel roads, river
crossings, and mountainous ascents and descents will challenge the
riders in the coming days. A perfect tableau on which to showcase the
impressive on- and off-road capabilities of the latest GS Trophy
Competition Bike, the BMW R 12 G/S.

The BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy is emphatically not a race:
outright speed, fastest times and individual victory are not what
define success. Instead, it is a shared adventure that rewards precise
riding, sound judgement, endurance and, above all, the ability to work
as a team. Participants support one another, solve practical and
intellectual challenges together and demonstrate the camaraderie,
resilience and mutual respect at the heart of the international GS
community. While teams collect points during special tests, these
challenges are designed to showcase well-rounded adventure-riding
skills rather than racing performance.

Over the weekend, participants completed registration and medical
checks, as well as the individual fitting of their protective and
riding equipment. After the SENA communication systems had been
integrated, they took delivery of their personalised BMW R 12 G/S
motorcycles. A welcome dinner and team introductions on Saturday set
the stage for the start on Sunday morning.

This year, eight national or regional qualifiers have produced 13
international teams, eight of which are three-person male teams and
five two-person female teams – all together 30 riders from 13 nations.
Some 30 individuals who will need all their riding skills, their inner
strength and outgoing team working capability to succeed in this
ever-testing adventure motorcycling competition.

Martin Schleypen, Event Director and Head of Brand Management,
BMW Motorrad, speaking from base camp:

“The GS Trophy brings together people from all around the world
who share a common passion: adventure, adventure riding, and the BMW
GS. It is far more than a competition. It is about team spirit,
international friendships, and shared experiences that continue to
resonate long after the event has ended.
For me, this unique sense
of community is what truly defines the magic of the GS Trophy.”

Adventure riding without limits.

The participants face six days and around 1,500 challenging
kilometres through the Carpathians. Roughly half of the route runs off
paved roads, taking in steep sections, rugged mountain trails and
dense forest tracks. The winding asphalt roads also demand maximum
concentration due to the challenging topography.

Daily competition challenges test riding, practical and mental skills
– essential qualities for adventure riders operating in remote regions.

The tenth edition is held under the motto “Back to Basics”: demanding
rides through mountain and forest terrain, teamwork and the certainty
that the unexpected is always just around the corner.

Host country Romania captivates with its rich traditions, fascinating
history and warm hospitality – a far more authentic experience than
the fantasy imagery shaped by Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

DESIGN

BMW Motorrad and off-road sport. This motorsport success story runs
like a red thread through the company's history. The torquey boxer
engine, combined with a shaft drive has proven its winning power and
durability in countless competitions.

However, it was not until 1980 that BMW Motorrad took the concept of
an enduro with a boxer engine into series production. The BMW R 80 G/S
was born. A production off-road bike that had never been seen before.
Blessed with a high level of off-road expertise, superior touring
capability and dynamic qualities for sporty road riding in equal
measure. In short: The abbreviation G/S (“Gelände / Straße” meaning
off-road and street) summed up the all-round qualities of the new
motorcycle perfectly.

The resounding market success of the R 80 G/S ultimately established
the completely new motorcycle segment of high-capacity touring
enduros, which BMW Motorrad not only dominates to this day with the GS
models, but also continues to develop further. At the same time, the
Enduro provided a formidable basis for motorsport success, as BMW
Motorrad's commanding victories in the Paris-Dakar Rallye in the first
half of the 1980s impressively demonstrated.

With a high front fender, cross-spoke wheels and small, compact
cockpit fairing, the new BMW R 12 G/S captures the spirit of the
off-road boxer enduro in the style of the R 80 G/S while bringing it
into the present with modern technology. The R 12 G/S in Light White
features a white fuel tank with contrasting light blue and dark blue
knee pads, complemented by the red full-length seat, and the model
name in fine red letters on the side panels of the airbox gives the R
12 G/S an appearance of being transported back in time to 1980.

Ergonomics and equipment for dynamic off-road riding.

Of course, the new BMW R 12 G/S is much more than just a visual
tribute to its predecessor from 45 years ago. It has everything you
need for serious off-road riding today, both in terms of drivetrain
and chassis.

After all, the drivetrain and chassis are complemented by the equally
important ergonomics that play a decisive role in off-road riding. The
ergonomic handlebar-footrest-seat triangle is designed so that the
footrests are positioned precisely under the seat point. An aluminum
tube handlebar, positioned high and close to the rider, ensures an
ideal riding position, whether sitting or standing. The shape of the
4.1-gallon steel fuel tank is designed accordingly. The sides of the
fuel tank match the width of the seat and widen slightly towards the
front. This side contour provides optimum support and good knee grip
on the fuel tank.

For dedicated off-road adventurers - three different seat
options, enduro footrests, adjustable handlebars, and attachment
points for luggage.

The new BMW R 12 G/S comes standard with a flat solo seat with a seat
height of 33.9-inches (34.4-inches with Enduro Pkg. Pro). Flat and
straight, it is ideal for enduro riding - even in a standing position.
The optional Passenger Kit includes seating for two and passenger
footrests. While the rider's seat height remains the same, the
passenger seat is designed with significantly more foam and a
passenger strap is fitted. The optional Rallye Seat raises the seat
height by 0.79-inches to 34.6-inches (35.2-inches with optional Enduro
Pkg. Pro). As with the Passenger Kit, the optional Rallye Seat option
also includes passenger footrests and hand straps.

The basic version of the new BMW R 12 G/S is equipped with a footrest
system designed primarily for on-road use, but also suitable for
off-road riding thanks to its serrated profile. The rounded tips
provide an optimum compromise between grip and comfort. The gearshift
lever is adjustable and the foot brake lever has a large contact area
and a conical grip pattern for optimum usability.

As part of the optional Enduro Package Pro, the R 12 G/S is equipped
with an enduro footrest system which, thanks to the enlarged contact
area of the footrest body in combination with three rows of spikes,
provides optimum grip for enduro riding. The foot brake lever also has
a better grip thanks to its stable shape and serrated contour, making
it ideal for enduro use. It can also be locked in two different
positions. The rear brake pedal is easier to reach while standing,
thanks to its upturned position. The gearshift lever is the same as on
the basic model.

The aluminum tubular handlebars allow for further ergonomic
adjustment. In addition to the correct adjustment of the gearshift and
foot brake levers, we recommend that the handlebars be turned forward
by 10 degrees for off-road riding while standing. There are
corresponding markings on the handlebars for this purpose. This will
raise the handlebars and make the controls even more accessible from a
standing position.

The new R 12 G/S comes standard with two practical steel eyelets on
the rear frame, which can be used as lashing points for attaching a
rear bag, for example. There are also two fabric straps under the solo
seat, which can be used as lashing points. The footrest slots and the
outriggers of the passenger footrests can be used as additional
lashing points with the optional Passenger Kit and Rallye Seat.

ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN

"With the air/oil-cooled boxer engine from the R 12 family, the
new BMW R 12 G/S has an ideal enduro drive for ambitious off-road fun.
Its ample torque and the 'ENDURO' and 'ENDURO PRO' riding modes, which
are fully tailored to off-road use, make it a perfect partner for
dedicated off-road riding.“ Norbert Rebholz, Boxer Series
Project Manager.

Iconic Boxer engine delivers power and torque for dynamic
riding on- and off-road.

Ever since the first BMW motorcycle - the R 32 - was launched in
1923, BMW Motorrad boxer engines have been synonymous with their
unmistakable design, a full torque curve and a throaty, unique sound.
The same is true of the new BMW R 12 G/S. Already familiar from
numerous BMW Motorrad models, the air/oil-cooled boxer engine with 101
mm bore, 73 mm stroke and 1,170 cc capacity delivers 109 hp at 7,000
rpm and the maximum torque of 85 lb-ft. at 6,500 rpm.

The valves, which are radially arranged in the combustion chamber,
are controlled by two overhead, chain-driven camshafts (DOHC) per
cylinder. Lightweight cam followers are responsible for valve
operation, and the valve clearance is adjusted using hemispherical
shims. The cylinder head covers have been redesigned, drawing
inspiration from the design of BMW's legendary two-valve boxer
engines. The proven six-speed gearbox and shaft drive take care of the
power transmission to the rear wheel.

New single-flow exhaust system delivers the unmistakable boxer sound.

The left-hand exhaust system with high-mounted rear silencer meets
the requirements of a classic enduro.

The cover and end cap of the rear silencer are painted matte black,
while the silencer body is made of stainless steel, emphasizing the
vehicle's sleek, dynamic lines. On the new BMW R 12 G/S, the exhaust
manifold with front silencer is electropolished as standard and is
also available in an optional chrome-plated version.

Standard riding modes "RAIN", "ROAD" and
"ENDURO" plus "ENDURO PRO" mode (with optional
Enduro Package Pro).

The new BMW R 12 G/S features standard "RAIN",
"ROAD" and "ENDURO" riding modes. It also comes
with standard DTC Dynamic Traction Control, which ensures a high level
of riding safety when accelerating. For off-road use, DTC can be
switched off completely on the new BMW R 12 G/S. In addition, the 12
G/S is equipped with standard MSR Engine Drag Torque Control.

While DTC offers increased riding safety when accelerating,
especially on slippery road surfaces, Engine Drag Torque Control
prevents the rear wheel from slipping as a result of abruptly
releasing the throttle or downshifting - even when braking. However,
if the tire's available grip capacity is below this opening threshold,
for example in wet conditions, the rear wheel could still exceed the
static friction limit due to the engine drag torque and simultaneous
activation of the rear wheel brake and then slip. Thanks to Engine
Drag Torque Control, the R 12 G/S can detect this danger at an early
stage. Depending on the coefficient of friction between the tire and
the road surface, the throttle valves are opened in milliseconds in
such a way that the drag torque is compensated, and the rear wheel
remains in the static friction range. This results in further enhanced
safety, especially on slippery roads.

"RAIN" mode is designed for use on wet roads. Throttle
response is softer, and all control systems are designed to maximize
stability and control.

In "ROAD" mode, which is designed for dry roads, throttle
response is more direct. Traction control is mid-range, and the
control systems are used for maximum stability.

The "ENDURO" mode is designed for off-road use with
road-legal enduro tires. The throttle response is smooth, and the
front wheel lift detection, Engine Drag Torque Control, and dynamic
traction control are only minimally active. The partially-integral ABS
control at the rear wheel operates in the mid-range and is adapted to
off-road use.

"ENDURO PRO" mode, part of the optional Enduro Pkg. Pro,
has the same direct throttle response as in "ROAD" mode.
Traction control and front wheel ABS only provide minimal
stabilization. Otherwise, all control systems (e.g. rear wheel ABS)
are inactive in order to provide an optimum off-road experience.

Optional Shift Assist Pro enables clutchless shifting.

Shift Assist Pro, available as an optional for the new BMW R 12 G/S,
allows for clutchless shifting in almost all load and speed ranges.
Compared to shifting using the clutch lever, it maximizes comfort and dynamics.

In addition, the typical lateral forces exerted on the rear wheel by
the boxer engine when shifting gears and using the clutch lever are
significantly reduced. Gear changes are smooth and fast, while the
vehicle remains stable and precisely maintains its line.

The shift linkage is not visible from the outside for a clean and
uncluttered design. Instead, it is located behind the swing arm.

CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION

"By adjusting the steering head position of the frame,
incorporating a large 21-inch front wheel, and long suspension travel,
we succeeded in bringing the new BMW R 12 G/S, a fully off-road
capable boxer enduro, to life. An 18-inch rear wheel is part of the
Enduro Package Pro and ensures maximum off-road fun." Ulf
Musekamp, Vehicle Concept Manager.

Tubular steel bridge frame and steering head optimized for
ideal off-road ergonomics.

The one-piece tubular bridge steel spaceframe of the R 12 family is
at the heart of the new BMW R 12 G/S. As a result, the new frame does
away with many of the bolted joints found on the first generation R
nineT, which gives it a tidier and more classic appearance. The rear
frame, also made of tubular steel, is bolted to the main frame. The
steering head is slightly higher and further forward on the new BMW R
12 G/S. In addition to improved ergonomics for off-road use, this
change also allows a large steering angle of 42 degrees to both left
and right, essential for off-road operation.

21-inch front wheel for optimum off-road performance. Optional
Enduro Package Pro with 18-inch rear wheel for maximum off-road performance.

While the other models in the BMW R 12 series are designed for pure
road use, the new BMW R 12 G/S, with its cross-spoke wheels, is a
fully fledged enduro. Accordingly, it is equipped with a 21-inch wheel
at the front with 90/90 R21 tire. A 17-inch wheel with a 150/70 R17
tire is standard at the rear. For even more off-road capability, an
18-inch rear wheel with 150/70 R18 tires is available as part of the
Enduro Package Pro. This offers more traction, riding precision and
ground clearance in tough off-road conditions.

Chassis geometry optimized for enduro use.

The entire chassis geometry has also been redesigned with the aim of
making the new BMW R 12 G/S a fully capable enduro for dedicated
off-road use.

The wheelbase is 62.2-inches (Enduro Package Pro: 62.4-inches), the
caster 4.76-inches (Enduro Package Pro: 4.78-inches) and the steering
head angle 26.9 degrees (Enduro Package Pro: 26.8 degrees).

With 9.4-inches of ground clearance (Enduro Package Pro:
10.0-inches), the new BMW R 12 G/S offers plenty of clearance between
the engine/transmission and the road surface, enabling it to master
even difficult off-road conditions without the risk of bottoming out.

Fully adjustable upside-down 45 mm front forks and Paralever swinging
arm with angled, fully adjustable rear shock combine with long travel
suspension to deliver outstanding off-road performance.

In addition to a stiff and stable main frame as the basis, long
suspension travel is essential for ambitious off-road riding. The new
R 12 G/S offers 8.3-inches of front suspension travel.

Rear suspension and damping are provided by an angled shock with
travel-dependent damping and full adjustability (rebound, compression
and pre-load). The fully adjustable shock’s travel-dependent damping
has a hydraulic end stop. This prevents hard shocks when riding. A
generous 7.9-inches of suspension travel is available at the rear.

BMW Motorrad ABS Pro for safer braking while cornering.

The front wheel of the new R 12 G/S is fitted with a twin-disc brakes
with two axially bolted, 2-piston floating calipers and 310 mm disks
to ensure excellent, stable stopping power. A single 265 mm disc brake
with 2-piston floating caliper is used at the rear.

The new R 12 G/S is equipped with standard BMW Motorrad ABS Pro
(partially-integral, meaning the front brake lever operates both front
and rear brakes). ABS Pro offers more safety when braking in turns by
enabling ABS-assisted braking when leaning into corners. ABS Pro
prevents the wheels from locking even when the brakes are applied
quickly and reduces abrupt changes in steering force and thus the bike
from returning to the upright position, even during sudden braking.
The benefits are increased braking and riding stability combined with
the best possible deceleration even when cornering. Depending on the
selected riding mode, ABS Pro and Engine Drag Torque Control offer
control characteristics for optimum braking maneuvers.

Hill Start Assist Pro provides assistance for holding and
starting on hills.

Optional Hill Start Assist Pro makes it easier to hold and start on
hills. The holding pressure in the brake system depends on the
gradient, which is determined by a lean angle sensor. This information
allows for improved comfort during starting in all conditions.
Combined with control electronics, HSA Pro offers greater safety and
enhanced convenience.

Hill Start Assist Pro also includes Auto HSA. The settings menu
allows this additional function to be individualized in such a way
that the holding brake is automatically activated on a gradient
(greater than +/- 3 %) when the hand or foot brake lever has been
activated, shortly after the motorcycle comes to a standstill. With
the "Manual" setting, this takes place after briefly
applying the hand or foot brake lever. With HSA Pro, the brake is
automatically released when starting or forcefully operating the hand
brake lever.

ELECTRONICS

"The round instrument, positioned centrally in the cockpit,
perfectly reflects the purist enduro character of the new BMW R 12
G/S, offering a vast array of information despite its minimalist
design. We've also included an optional micro TFT display to
accommodate the customization concept." Carina Höfler,
Product Management BMW R 12 Series.

Classically designed round gauge and 12 V socket. Optional
digital display available.

The new BMW R 12 G/S is equipped with a standard, centrally
positioned, round instrument dial and a 12 V power socket on the
right-hand side of the cockpit. The round gauge continues to support
customization by communicating via a LIN-Bus and separating the
control and display units.

The control lights and a digital display are integrated into the dial
of the speedometer. This includes menu scrolling, gear selection and
riding mode display.

With the optional Digital Display, the round gauge on the new BMW R
12 G/S is replaced by a micro TFT display with a 3.5-inch screen. The
high resolution of the micro-TFT display ensures excellent readability
even in difficult lighting conditions and brings the instrument
display of the new R 12 G/S into the digital age. As a highlight, the
menu includes the Pure Ride mode, which displays only the most
necessary information (speed, riding mode, selected gear) to emphasize
the purist riding experience.

Standard LED lighting with optional adaptive Headlight Pro.

The new BMW R 12 G/S comes standard with the smallest LED round
headlamp in the current BMW motorcycle range, measuring 5.75-inches in
diameter and featuring an iconic X-shaped light signature.
Furthermore, the turn indicator and control lights of the new R 12 G/S
also use LED technology.

The optional, adaptive “Headlight Pro” light system offers more
safety at night. The headlamp segments are each supplemented by
adaptive cornering light elements. And this, in turn, allows for
better illumination of the road in bends, ensuring a safer night-time ride.

Keyless Ride.

The standard Keyless Ride system replaces the conventional ignition
lock on the new BMW R 12 G/S. The use of a traditional key is now only
necessary for the steering lock and fuel tank cap. The ignition and
accessory anti-theft alarm system are controlled by means of a
transponder integrated in the vehicle key, which transmits a radio
signal with a vehicle-specific frequency. The key can therefore remain
in the rider's jacket, for example. Readiness to ride is established
by pressing the ON button on the right handlebar switch.

ConnectedRide Control.

With the optional ConnectedRide Control, the new BMW R 12 G/S, like
the other R 12 models, is equipped with a Bluetooth interface for
pairing with a smartphone and connecting to the BMW Motorrad Connected
app. The app displays vehicle data, riding dynamics, local weather
information and map navigation in the app. The familiar BMW Motorrad
Multi-Controller on the left handlebar can be used to conveniently
control the app without removing hands from the handlebars. The
MotoMount by SP Connect and the Universal Phone Clamp ensure quick,
secure, and vibration-isolated mounting of the smartphone on the
handlebars. A USB-C socket is added to the left side of the fairing
when ConnectedRide Control is selected.

Tire pressure monitoring with deactivatable warning function
for in Enduro mode.

Available as an option, the tire pressure control system measures the
air pressure in the front and rear wheels via a sensor on the inside
of the rim and displays it on the screen. An angled valve makes it
easier to top up the air. In addition, the warning messages can be
deactivated in all riding modes, allowing riders to ride with low
pressure without a constant warning message, such as in Enduro mode.

Intelligent Emergency Call.

Ensuring the fastest possible assistance in the event of an accident
or in situations of emergency and danger can save people’s lives. For
this reason, BMW Motorrad has developed an eCall system – “Intelligent
Emergency Call” - which aims to get help to the scene of the incident
as quickly as possible. This system is standard on the R 12 G/S.

Standard
Ultimate Care Break-In Service.

Like all 2025 model year BMW motorcycle models, the new C 400 GT
includes the Ultimate Care Break-In Service, or “600
Mile Service” as standard. This included service further provides BMW
customers with a truly premium experience. Time and mileage limits
apply - maximum 6 months from the in-service date or maximum 750 miles
- whichever comes first.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – Feb. 29, 2024 . . . BMW Motorrad
proudly introduces the new 2024 R 12 nineT and R 12 Classic Roadster
and Cruiser.

With the introduction of the original R nineT in 2013, BMW Motorrad
presented more than just a classic-style roadster. From the beginning,
it combined classic motorcycle design and modern technology with
craftsmanship and comprehensive customization options. It led to a
whole family or Roadsters for the BMW Motorrad Heritage line.

The guiding principle for the development of the new R 12 nineT
was “The Spirit of nineT”, with the goal of
following in the footsteps of the successful R nineT and carrying
forward its look, timelessness, and high customization qualities.
While the new R 12 nineT as a classic roadster aims to make a stylish
impression in urban environments as well as provide dynamic riding fun
on winding roads, the new BMW R 12 comes under the
motto “The Spirit of Easy” - perfectly embodying a
classic cruiser for cool and relaxed riding.

2. Design

"Ten years ago, we at BMW Motorrad introduced the R nineT, which
established the segment of classic bikes. The new R 12 series takes
this path of emotional, original motorcycle riding even further: with
clearer lines, a more consistent implementation in each segment, and
greater customization possibilities.”

Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad.

The new BMW R 12 nineT and R 12 are classic cruisers and roadsters
that combine the torquey character of the boxer engine and the design
language of traditional motorcycle eras with innovative technology and
a modular concept that offers the rider maximum customization options.
Reduction to the essentials and attention to detail were key
priorities in the development of the design, resulting in a strong
emotional appeal.

Customizing is more popular than ever. The trend started by the R
nineT when it was launched in 2013, has given rise to an incredibly
creative scene over the years. BMW Motorrad has catered to this demand
with a whole model family centered around the R nineT, giving birth to
the BMW Motorrad Heritage family. Ever since, the desire for
customizing and personalization has been burning in countless
motorcycle riders' hearts. So, the question was not whether there will
be a successor to the R nineT model family, but how it can fulfil the
desires and needs of customers even more captivatingly and authentically.

Accordingly, the new R 12 and R 12 nineT are built on a common,
versatile chassis with a now one-piece trellis frame, an airbox
positioned flat under the seat and an angled rear shock. This allows
for different, interchangeable tank shapes, providing greater visual
individuality. It also offers freedom in designing the seats and fly lines.

The new R 12 nineT and R 12 offer classic design and optimal ergonomics.

On the BMW R 12 nineT, the aluminum
tank with brushed and clear-coated side panels, the seat, and the
tail-hump create a rising, dynamic line. Edgar Heinrich, Head of
Design BMW Motorrad: "The purist design language is dominated by
the clear tank/seat/rear line, in the style of the traditional /5 or
the legendary R 90 S of the 70s. At first glance, the tank itself is a
classic BMW boxer tank, with a typical bend in the lower edge and
classic knee contact. The new R 12 nineT also features side covers in
the area of the frame triangle for an authentic Roadster look -
another reminiscence of BMW motorcycles of the 1970s." The focus
on essential design is supported by the compact and short tail
section. The shorter fuel tank, which is 1.2-inches shorter and
narrower in the rear, ensures significantly improved ergonomics and a
more front-oriented seating position compared to its predecessor.

The R 12 nineT features a 31.3-inch seat height while the R 12 offers
a lower, 29.7-inch seat height.

On the new BMW R 12, the steel tank, reminiscent of
the so-called “Toaster Tanks” of the 1970s BMW /5 models, emphasizes
the design language of a cruiser in a classic teardrop shape and forms
a descending line in combination with the standard solo seat and the
curved, low-mounted rear fender. The large 19-inch front wheel and the
smaller 16-inch rear wheel complement this look. The classic cruiser
design is also reflected in the more relaxed seating position with
lower seat height and wider handlebars.

Strong attention to detail.

The new Heritage models’ attention to detail is evident in numerous
features, such as the intricately designed front fender bracket or the
LED headlight - with a black-framed light element on the R 12 nineT.
The instrument panel also seamlessly integrates into the overall
style. On the R 12 nineT, it features two traditional round
instruments, while the

R 12 has a single round instrument. The LED turn signals on the upper
fork bridge are equipped with tinted smoke lenses. The R 12 nineT also
has smoked rear turn signal lenses, while the new R 12 features
integrated functional turn signals.

On the U.S. R 12 nineT, the LED rear lights are elegantly and
discreetly integrated into the turn signal lights, while European
models feature a central taillight. The concept of a classic roadster
and classic cruiser is also reflected in the exhaust system with two,
rear stacked mufflers, fitted with conical end pieces.

The BMW Motorrad Design Team's keen attention to detail is evident in
the side covers. Painted in matching body color, they prominently
showcase the bright chrome-plated badges - with the R 12 nineT
displaying a model designation, while the R 12 does not. On Option 719
vehicles, the badges are finished with the corresponding lettering. In
addition, an aluminum frame badge with their model designation adorns
the new R 12 nineT and R 12.

Three attractive paint options.

The BMW R 12 nineT and R 12, are each available in three attractive
color options.

R 12 nineT

Standard Blackstorm Metallic.

Optional Aventurine Red Metallic.

Optional Option 719 "Thorium" in Avus Silver Metallic.

3. Drivetrain

"The two new R 12 models feature an air/oil-cooled boxer engine,
providing both powerful and characterful performance. In the R 12
nineT, it ensures high riding dynamics with its peak power, while in
the R 12 it emphasizes torque at low engine speeds."
Norbert Rebholz, Project Manager Air-Cooled Boxer Series BMW Motorrad.

Boxer engine offers power and torque for dynamic riding and
relaxed cruising.

For the past 100 years, the two-cylinder boxer engine and shaft drive
have been synonymous with BMW motorcycles. In line with this legacy,
the new BMW R 12 nineT and R 12 models, released in the “100 Years of
BMW Motorrad” anniversary year, emphasize this distinctive powertrain
configuration. Since the appearance of the first BMW motorcycle - the
R 32 - in 1923, BMW Motorrad boxer engines have been known for their
distinctive, rugged design, abundant torque, and unique sound. This is
also true for the new BMW R 12 nineT and R 12, whose boxer engine is
based on the engine introduced in 2007 with the BMW HP 2 Sport and is
considered an iconic representative among BMW boxer engines in terms
of technology, performance, and torque delivery.

The air/oil-cooled boxer engine with a 101 mm bore, 73 mm stroke and
1,170 cc capacity delivers 109 hp in the R 12 nineT at 7,000 rpm and
the maximum torque of 85 lb-ft. is reached at 6,500 rpm. In the R 12,
95 hp are available at 6,500 rpm and 81 lb-ft. are generated at 6,000
rpm. The maximum engine speed is 8,500 rpm.

The valves, which are only radially arranged in the combustion
chamber for this BMW boxer engine, are controlled by two overhead,
chain-driven camshafts (DOHC) per cylinder. Lightweight cam followers
are responsible for valve operation, and the valve clearance is
adjusted using hemispherical shims. The cylinder head covers have been
redesigned, drawing inspiration from the design of BMW's legendary
two-valve boxer engines. The proven six-speed transmission and the
drive shaft transfer power to the rear wheel.

New airbox, now integrated under the seat.

As part of the complete redesign of the chassis, the new R 12 models
also feature a new airbox. Unlike the previous R nineT series, the
airbox no longer has an air intake duct located below the tank. It is
now fully integrated under the seat.

New “Twin Pipe” exhaust system delivers the unmistakable boxer
sound.

The left-hand mounted “Twin Pipe” exhaust system with two rear
mufflers and reverse-cone cap design caters to both the desire for a
classically designed roadster and a cruiser. Unlike the previous R
nineT series, there is no longer a need for an exhaust flap.

The new manifold routing leads into a front muffler in front of the
rear wheel, in which the catalytic converter is housed. On the new R
12 nineT, the manifolds and the front muffler are chrome-plated, and
the rear muffler is electro-polished. The new R 12, on the other hand,
features electro-polished manifolds and front muffler, while the rear
muffler features a brushed finish.

The genuine BMW Motorrad accessories for the R 12 nineT and R 12
offer exhaust customization options to match the character of the two
new R 12 models to personal preferences. For a particularly technical
touch, a titanium sports muffler is available.

Riding modes and standard DTC and Engine Drag Torque Control.

The new R 12 nineT features "Rain", "Road" and
"Dynamic" riding modes as standard while the new R 12 has
"Roll" and "Rock" riding modes so the rider can
adapt the riding behavior to their personal preferences. Both new R 12
models are equipped with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), which ensures
a high level of driving safety when accelerating. In addition, the new
R 12 Models equipped with Engine Drag Torque Control as standard.

While DTC offers increased riding safety when accelerating,
especially on slippery road surfaces, the Engine Drag Control prevents
the rear wheel from slipping as a result of abruptly releasing the
throttle or downshifting, even under braking. Thanks to Engine Drag
Torque Control, the new R 12 models detect this danger at an early stage.

Depending on the coefficient of friction between the tire and the
road surface, the throttle valves are opened in milliseconds so that
the drag torque is compensated for, and the rear tire remains in the
optimal friction range. This results in further enhanced safety,
especially on slippery roads.

In “Rain” mode on the R 12 nineT, the throttle response is gentle,
and the traction control and torque control systems are more
sensitive, ensuring increased safety on slippery roads.

In “Road” mode, the throttle response is balanced, and the DTC
control and Engine Drag Torque Control systems are designed for dry
and high traction road conditions.

In “Dynamic mode”, you can fully experience the potential of the new
R 12 nineT. The throttle response is very direct, allowing for more
slip at the rear wheel, and the Dynamic Traction Control optimally
regulates traction even during sporty cornering.

The “Roll” mode in the new R 12 ensures optimal throttle response and
the DTC and Engine Drag Control systems are adjusted for ideal
performance on all types of roads.

The "Rock" riding mode allows the rider to explore the full
dynamic potential of the new R 12. Throttle response is spontaneous
and direct, and DTC allows a little more slip. As a special feature,
the bike idles with a deliberately irregular rhythm in the “Rock” mode.

Optional Shift Assistant Pro.

The optional, Shift Assistant Pro, allows for clutchless shifting in
almost all load and speed ranges. It offers increased dynamic
performance and comfort compared to manual shifting, with extremely
short shift times that enable acceleration with minimal interruption
of pulling power.

4. Chassis

“The completely new, now one-piece tubular spaceframe provides an
even cleaner and more classic appearance.” Bart Janssen
Groesbeek, Designer Vehicle Design BMW Motorrad.

New, one-piece trellis bridge steel frame with bolt-on rear section.

The centerpiece of the new BMW R 12 models is the completely newly
developed trellis steel frame. This frame differs from the previous R
nineT series, which had a two-piece front main frame. As a result, the
new frame eliminates the need for previous fastenings, reducing weight
and giving the new R 12 models a cleaner and more classic appearance.
The rear frame, also made of tubular steel, is bolted to the main frame.

The R 12 nineT's suspension geometry is even more focused on
excellent handling and enjoyable roadster fun on winding roads. It
comes equipped with cast light-alloy wheels measuring 3.50 x 17"
at the front and 5.50 x 17" at the rear (120/70 ZR 17 or 180/55
ZR 17 tires). The wheelbase is 59.5-inches, the caster is 4.4-inches,
and the rake is 27.7 degrees.

To cater to the cruiser character for more relaxed riding, the new R
12 has an optimized suspension geometry design with increased rake,
longer caster, and increased wheelbase. It also features cast
light-alloy wheels, but 2.75 x 19" at the front and 4.00 x
16" at the rear (100/90-19 or 150/80-16 tires). The wheelbase is
59.8-inches, the caster is 5.2-inches, and the rake is 29.3 degrees.

Upside-down telescopic forks and Paralever rear suspension
with revised travel-dependent damping.

The new R 12 nineT and R 12 feature upside-down telescopic 45mm front
forks, fully adjustable on the R 12 nineT. Front suspension travel is
4.7-inches on the R 12 nineT and 3.5-inches on the R 12.

The rear suspension of the R 12 nineT features a Paralever swing arm
combined with a directly linked shock, which is now angled diagonally
compared to the previous R nineT series. The shock has road-dependent
damping, adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. The improved
road-dependent damping of the shock now includes a hydraulic bump
stop, which prevents bottoming out during riding. The rear suspension
travel is 4.7-inches on the R 12 nineT and 3.5-inches on the R 12.

BMW Motorrad ABS Pro for safe braking even when cornering.

The front brakes of the new R 12 nineT and R 12, feature twin 310 mm
discs with two radially mounted 4-piston monobloc brake calipers. A
single 265 mm disc brake with a 2-piston floating caliper is used on
the rear wheel.

The new R 12 models are equipped with BMW Motorrad ABS Pro
(part-integral) as standard. ABS Pro offers more safety when braking
in turns by enabling ABS-assisted braking when leaning. ABS Pro
prevents the wheels from locking even when the brakes are applied
quickly. The benefits are increased braking and riding stability
combined with the best possible deceleration, even when cornering.
Depending on the selected riding mode, ABS Pro and the Engine Drag
Torque Control offer adapted control characteristics for optimum
braking maneuvers.

Optional Hill Start Assist Pro

The optional Hill Start Assist Pro makes it easier to hold and start
on inclines. The holding pressure in the brake system depends on the
gradient, which is determined by a lean angle sensor. This information
allows for improved comfort during starting from a stop in all
conditions. Combined with control electronics, HSA Pro offers greater
safety and enhanced convenience.

With HSC Pro, the brake is automatically released when starting from
a stop or forcefully operating the hand brake lever. Hill Start
Control Pro also includes the function Auto HSC. The settings menu
allows this additional function to be individualized in such a way
that the parking brake is automatically activated on a gradient
(greater than +/- 3 %) when the hand or foot brake lever has been
pressed, shortly after the motorcycle comes to a standstill.

5. Electronics

“The newly designed and larger round instruments offer all necessary
information at a glance, while maintaining a classic design. We have
taken the modern customizing concept into account with a new micro TFT
display." Carina Höfler, Product Management Heritage BMW
Motorrad.

New classic round instruments, USB-C and 12 V socket and
available digital display.

The new R 12 nineT comes equipped with two analog round instruments
for speed and rpm, a USB-C port on the left side, and a 12V socket on
the right side for the onboard network. The round instruments continue
to support customization by communicating via a LIN-Bus and separating
the control and display units. The standard instrumentation for the
new R 12 is limited to the speedometer, but the rev counter can be
retrofitted from the list of available genuine BMW Motorcycle accessories.

The new round instruments only resemble those of the previous R nineT
series at first glance. They have increased in diameter by 0.2-inches,
resulting in even better readability, and the dials for the
speedometer and rev counter have been redesigned. Another new feature
is the scaling of the rev counter, whose digits are now based on a
multiplication factor of 100.

The control lights and a digital display are integrated into the dial
of the speedometer. On the R 12 nineT it functions as a menu scroll,
while on the R 12 it still displays the engaged gear and the selected
riding mode.

Furthermore, the R 12 nineT has an additional digital display in the
rev counter. In addition to showing the selected gear and the riding
mode, it also offers a configurable additional display.

With the Digital Display option, the round instruments on the new R
12 nineT and R 12 are replaced by a 3.5-inch micro TFT display. The
high resolution of the micro-TFT display ensures excellent readability
even in difficult lighting conditions and brings the instrument
display of the new R 12 models into the digital age. As a highlight,
the menu includes the Pure Ride mode, which displays only the most
necessary information (speed, riding mode, selected gear) to emphasize
the purist riding experience.

Powerful standard LED lighting with optional adaptive
Headlight Pro.

The new R 12 nineT and the R 12 feature full LED lighting as
standard. The optional adaptive Headlight Pro light system offers even
more safety at night. The headlamp segments are each supplemented by
adaptive cornering light elements. This allows for better illumination
of the road in curves, ensuring a safer night-time ride.

U.S. models feature rear / brake lights which are integrated into the
rear turn signals.

Optional Connected Ride Control.

The optional Connected Ride Control, equips the two R 12 models with
a Bluetooth interface for connecting a smartphone and using the BMW
Motorrad Connected app. This allows for the display of vehicle data,
riding dynamics data, weather information at the current location, and
map navigation. The familiar BMW Motorrad Multi-Controller on the left
handlebar can be used to conveniently control the app without removing
hands from the handlebar. The MotoMount by SP Connect and the
Universal Phone Clamp ensure quick, secure, and vibration-isolated
mounting of the smartphone on the handlebar.

Standard Keyless Ride.

The standard Keyless Ride system replaces the conventional ignition
lock on the new R 12 models. The use of a traditional key is now only
necessary for the steering lock and fuel tank cap. The ignition and
anti-theft alarm system, which is available as a dealer installed
accessory, are controlled by means of a transponder integrated in the
vehicle key, which transmits a radio signal with a vehicle-specific
frequency. The key can therefore remain in the rider's jacket, for
example. Readiness to ride is established by pressing the ON button on
the right handlebar switch.

Intelligent Emergency Call for even more motorcycling safety.

Ensuring the fastest possible assistance in the event of an accident
or in situations of emergency and danger can save people’s lives. For
this reason, BMW Motorrad has developed an eCall system – “Intelligent
Emergency Call” – which aims to get help to the scene of the incident
as quickly as possible. For the new R 12 models, this system is
included as a standard feature in the market-dependent equipment program.
