Spartanburg, S.C. – June 30, 2026… BMW Group announced today the completion of a $1.7 billion investment in its South Carolina operations. The company celebrated the milestone at the "Home of X" event at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, reaffirming its longstanding commitment in the United States through continued investment and innovation leadership. With this milestone, BMW Group has completed the expansion of Plant Spartanburg and the construction of Plant Woodruff, establishing the foundation for the assembly of fully electric BMW vehicles in South Carolina. The United States remains one of BMW Group's most important markets and business ecosystems worldwide. 

The event also marked the world premiere of the all new, fifth-generation BMW X5. BMW confirmed that the BMW iX5 will be the first fully electric BMW assembled in the United States, starting in late 2026.

Established more than three decades ago, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg is the global center of competence for BMW X models. The completion of BMW Group's $1.7 billion investment in South Carolina represents the latest chapter in the company's longstanding commitment in the United States. Together, Plant Spartanburg and Plant Woodruff will enable the assembly of the next generation of BMW X vehicles, including fully electric models, while strengthening BMW Group's ability to serve customers around the world.

All New BMW X5 Available in Five Drivetrains.   

A centerpiece of the Home of X celebration was the world premiere of the all new BMW X5. The X5 established the premium Sports Utility Vehicle segment and became one of the most successful products in BMW history. Since 1999, over 3 million BMW X5 models have been sold around the world, a third of which were sold in the U.S. 

Assembled at Plant Spartanburg for over 25 years, the all new BMW X5 becomes the first vehicle offered with five drivetrain technologies. The options span internal combustion, battery electric, plug-in hybrid electric, diesel and, soon, fuel cell electric powered by hydrogen. This breadth reflects BMW Group's technology-open approach and commitment to customer choice.

Plant Spartanburg will be the first plant in the BMW Group’s global production network capable of assembling a single vehicle with five different drivetrain technologies on one assembly line, demonstrating the technology-open strategy at the highest level. 

By offering a broad range of drivetrain technologies, BMW enables customers to select the vehicle that best suits their needs, driving habits, and preferences. This flexibility reflects BMW Group's conviction that multiple technologies will play an important role in the transition to sustainable mobility.

The announcement represents another important milestone in BMW Group's electrification strategy. It fulfills a key commitment made as part of the company's 2022 investment announcement. By 2030, BMW Group will assemble at least six fully electric BMW models in the United States, supported by locally assembled high-voltage batteries from Plant Woodruff.

Digitalization and AI in Production: Key Principles of BMW iFACTORY are implemented at Plants Spartanburg and Woodruff.  

The BMW iFACTORY concept defines the BMW Group’s strategic vision for the future of its global production network, driven by efficiency, sustainability, and digitalization. Both at Plant Spartanburg and Plant Woodruff, the guiding principles of the BMW iFACTORY are already a reality.  

Smart automation, end-to-end data integration, and virtual planning form a highly connected production system — with a highly skilled workforce at its core. Using digital twins, processes in both plants are optimized long before the first component reaches the assembly line. Using 3D virtual simulations enables seamless implementation, reduces complexity, and enhances workflows and ergonomics for associates. 

Artificial intelligence is deeply anchored in the assembly of both plants. AI-supported applications, including self-correcting robotics and vision-based quality controls, help ensure consistently high standards in a dynamic manufacturing environment. At both plants, AIQX (Artificial Intelligence Quality Next), an in-house IT platform at the BMW Group, is being applied. AIQX uses sensors and camera systems along the production line to automate quality processes. AI evaluates the data and provides real-time feedback to employees on the line. 

At the same time, Plant Spartanburg is advancing the next stage of innovation through physical AI. By utilizing humanoid robots from Figure AI, Plant Spartanburg has become a pioneer of BMW’s Physical

AI Initiative. These applications support associates in physically demanding and repetitive tasks, enabling greater focus on precision, craftsmanship, and quality that define every BMW vehicle.

At Plant Woodruff, the BMW Group is deploying intelligent, next-generation manufacturing powered by cutting-edge technologies—first proven in virtual environments.  Following the BMW iFACTORY principles, the new plant also reduces complexity and sets new standards in high voltage battery assembly. Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 30, 2026…The new BMW X5 opens the next chapter for the Sports Activity Vehicle that created the segment. Now in its fifth generation, the X5 brings together a powerful new design, innovations from the Neue Klasse, and the broadest range of drive systems ever offered in a BMW model.

Since its debut in 1999, the BMW X5 has defined the BMW X family and helped shape the future of premium SAVs. The new generation carries that leadership forward as the first BMW to launch with five drive system types (depending on market), giving customers an unprecedented level of choice.

The 2027 BMW X5 lineup will include internal combustion engines with 48V mild hybrid technology, a plug-in hybrid, the first all-electric BMW iX5, and, at a later stage, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen — BMW’s first hydrogen-powered production vehicle.

The new BMW iX5, the first battery-electric BMW X5, debuts with sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. In the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, that means an estimated 435 miles of range (preliminary estimate based on BMW AG testing following EPA testing procedures), fast charging, 800V technology, and practical bidirectional charging, enabled by new 120-millimeter cylindrical cells used in the high-voltage battery.

World Premiere at BMW Plant Spartanburg.

The 2027 BMW X5 rollout begins in October with the market launch of the X5 40 xDrive. The rear-wheel-drive X5 40, plug-in hybrid X5 50e xDrive, and first battery-electric variant, the iX5 60 xDrive, will follow in the first quarter of 2027. Additional models, including a V8-powered M Performance variant, are scheduled to arrive later in 2027. Further ahead, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen will bring hydrogen fuel-cell technology to series production, pairing all-electric driving with quick refueling stops.

The 2027 BMW X5 40 will carry a base MSRP of $69,800, while the 40 xDrive will start at $72,100. The all-wheel drive X5 50e xDrive PHEV opens at $77,500, and the fully electric iX5 60 xDrive at $79,800. Each requires a destination and handling charge of $1,450.

Plant Spartanburg has assembled the BMW X5 since its 1999 debut, when the model founded a new market segment. Now, the Home of X reaches another milestone as the new BMW iX5 becomes the first all-electric vehicle to come from the US facility. Just down the road from the plant in Woodruff, the new sixth-generation high-voltage battery facility for the iX5 requires no fossil fuels for normal operations, underscoring BMW’s rigorous approach to reducing emissions in production.

Familiar X proportions meet a striking new front end, with vertically aligned BMW kidney Iconic Glow and a dynamic light signature.

The new BMW X5 blends the unmistakable proportions of an X model with the pioneering design language of the Neue Klasse. Across all drivetrains, it retains the commanding presence and classic SUV stance that have defined the BMW X5 for generations.

The upright front end is significantly taller than before, giving the new BMW X5 an imposing yet precisely proportioned appearance. Crisp surfaces, a larger matte-finish BMW badge, and precisely modeled hood lines create a clean, modern look. Front-apron design varies by powertrain: horizontal air intakes emphasize the sportiness and stability of combustion-engine models, while the BMW iX5 uses a continuous apron design for a more elegant, fully electric expression.

The reduced, vertically aligned BMW kidney Iconic Glow is one of the defining elements of the new design. Integrated into the daytime driving lights with the new double-X light icons, it remains illuminated day and night and forms part of the Welcome Light animation, giving the new BMW X5 an unmistakable signature.

Making their BMW debut, the double-X light icons combine low-beam headlights, daytime driving lights, side lights, and turn signal indicators in a single element, eliminating the need for an additional lens module. LED Headlights with cornering lights are standard, and the double-X icons can be switched off to reveal simpler diagonal icons.

Personalized welcome and goodbye animations, including the optional Ceremonial Light Carpet.

New welcome and goodbye animations create a seamless, personalized experience from approach to departure. The sequence incorporates the front and rear lights, optional Ceremonial Light Carpet projectors (part of the optional Tech Package), interior lighting, BMW Winglet door handle illumination, and exterior mirrors. Inside, the driver’s seat and steering column move to ease entry, while BMW Panoramic Vision and the Central Display deliver a personalized greeting. Customers can choose animations in RELAXED, BALANCED, or EXCITED modes.

The optional Ceremonial Light Carpet replaces the standard static light carpet with fully dynamic greeting and goodbye animations that vary by selected mode.

Monolithic design, new BMW Winglet door handles, an elegant silhouette, and muscular wheel arches.

From the side, the BMW X5 appears carved from a single piece. Clean, reduced surfaces form a fluid silhouette, while the gently sloping roofline adds agility and elegance. Hidden window seals create flush transitions between painted and glass surfaces.

The new BMW Winglet door handles, integrated into the B- and C-pillars in Black high-gloss, help create uninterrupted door surfaces and a cleaner side profile. The handles open the optional electrically powered doors with a light touch, close them with a press, and lock them by holding the front locking surface for just under a second. Soft Close is standard for smooth, refined door operation.

Sharp, angular wheel arches frame the large wheels and reinforce the powerful X stance, while their close-cut design supports aerodynamic efficiency. Standard matte Black side skirts add familiar SAV robustness and visually lift the body.

Powerful rear design with intricate rear lights.

At the rear, the new BMW X5 shows wide shoulders and a muscular body shaped by the deeply recessed greenhouse. The design improves aerodynamics and efficiency while emphasizing the vehicle’s strong on-road stance and flared wheel arches.

A body-color rear bumper contrasts with matte Black trim and a darker lower section, adding a precise sporting accent.

Slim, intricately designed rear lights echo the double-X theme at the front, emphasizing the X5’s width and premium character. Extending across nearly the full rear, they enhance visibility and give the new BMW X5 an unmistakable light signature.

M Sport Package and M Sport Package Professional sharpen the athletic character of the new BMW X5.

The optional M Sport Package adds a more dynamic look and feel to the new BMW X5. It includes M roof rails in high-gloss Shadowline and M Sport exterior elements such as the M Aerodynamics Package, M-specific door sill plates, and M light carpet. Two horizontal lines of contour lighting give the front end a clean, sporty appearance and make the X5 look wider and more planted. Sculpted front-bumper surfaces, expressive air intakes, and body-color side skirts bring the vehicle visually closer to the road, while Adaptive M Suspension, 21-inch wheels, and M Sport brakes with Dark Blue metallic calipers support a more engaging drive. Inside, Black/Atlas Grey sports seats in Veganza/Alcantara are added to the list of available interior designs.

The optional M Sport Package Professional takes the athletic theme further. Building on the M Sport Package, it adds 22-inch Trigon alloy wheels in Jet Black, M Sport brakes in Red metallic with a monochrome M logo, darker BMW kidney Iconic Glow M Shadowline, exterior mirrors in Black high-gloss, an M-specific bumper with additional Black trim in the lower front apron, M-specific door sill trim, an M leather steering wheel, and M seat belts.

Broad personalization: eleven exterior colors and wheels up to 23 inches.

The new BMW X5 offers extensive exterior personalization opportunities, with eleven paint colors including five shades new to the X5: Space Silver metallic, Grey Pine metallic, Vancouver Green metallic, and, from late 2026, BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic and BMW Individual Frozen Space Silver metallic. A broad range of special-order BMW Individual paint finishes will be available to order from April 2027.

Customers can also choose from ten wheel designs. 21-inch light-alloy wheels are standard, with 22-inch and, for the first time on the BMW X5, 23-inch wheels are available to further emphasize its powerful road presence.

Neue Klasse technologies shape a clean, sophisticated interior.

The monolithic exterior design flows into the cabin, creating a calm, sophisticated sense of space. The elevated seating position, large door trim surfaces, and redesigned instrument panel give the driver a clear, uncluttered view, while minimalist interior surfaces help keep attention focused on the road.

BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X brings Neue Klasse technology into the new BMW X5, expanding driver orientation and interior personalization. The redesigned instrument panel showcases the free-cut Central Display in an ideal ergonomic position near the steering wheel, while BMW Panoramic Vision spans the base of the windshield and works with the new multifunction steering wheel to create a modern, driver-focused cockpit.

Light animations play a central role in the atmosphere of the new BMW X5. Positioned directly beneath the instrument panel, the backlit accent strip with integrated ambient lighting wraps from door to door, surrounding driver and passengers with a warm, welcoming effect.

When inactive, the strip presents in the selected interior accent color: Dark Silver as standard or optional Silver Bronze. When active, dynamic animations turn the cabin into a personalized, multisensory space. Color and brightness adjust to the time of day and can be customized through My Modes or directly by the driver.

The light strip continues into the doors, visually expanding the cabin and enhancing the X5’s already generous sense of space.

Innovative natural materials, including slate and glass, elevate the interior atmosphere.

The interior of the new BMW X5 combines craftsmanship, innovation, and everyday usability. BMW introduces slate as a decorative surface for the first time in the X5 through the optional BMW Individual Clear & Bold interior application. An innovative process applies a thin layer of genuine slate to the base material, allowing it to be shaped precisely to the cabin’s contours.

Slate is used on the center console control panel, where it adds a distinctive tactile quality. Integrated touch controls operate key functions such as the parking brake, rear-window defrost, and hazard warning lights.

The optional BMW Individual Clear & Bold interior application pairs slate with crystal glass elements to emphasize both robustness and elegance. The gear selector, volume controls, and seat-adjustment controls are crafted from genuine glass, adding a refined look and premium feel.

The center console also includes two cup holders, two USB-C ports, and an Alcantara Anthracite smartphone tray with inductive charging and a magnetic holder. Black high-gloss decorative surfaces are standard.

Depending on the interior design, X quilting on the door panels and instrument-panel facing adds a modern, three-dimensional seam pattern. Together with reduced seat quilting, these details create a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

New optional BMW Passenger Screen brings front-seat entertainment to the journey.

Available for the first time in a BMW X5, the optional BMW Passenger Screen sits next to the free-cut Central Display and gives the front passenger access to entertainment from popular third-party apps. Passengers can stream films or join video conferences while the vehicle is moving, while the interior camera monitors for driver distraction and automatically darkens the screen distraction is detected. When parked, entertainment content is also available on the Central Display.

Premium comfort features include a panoramic glass sunroof, four-zone climate control, and Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos.

Standard equipment includes a large panoramic glass sunroof with an opening front section, bringing a bright, airy feel to the cabin. Its two glass elements cover about 28 square feet, combining an expansive interior sensation with an elegant exterior look when open.

The new BMW X5 also includes 2.5-zone climate control as standard, with slim front vents integrated almost invisibly into the instrument panel. The Central Display enables precise airflow control. The optional Climate Package adds four-zone climate control with a rear touchscreen, additional vents, ventilated multifunction front seats, and heating for the rear seats, steering wheel, and armrests. Battery-electric BMW iX5 variants feature a model-specific climate system with highly efficient heat pump technology.

The standard 280-watt HiFi System Professional uses 12 speakers to deliver clear surround sound throughout the cabin. The optional Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System raises output to as much as 775 watts, with a seven-band equalizer and up to 18 speakers with metal covers.

With Dolby Atmos support, the Bowers & Wilkins system creates a three-dimensional soundscape for compatible audio formats, delivering an immersive experience for music and video streaming.

Standard sports seats and available multifunction seats deliver elevated comfort, ventilation, and massage.

The new BMW X5 comes standard with heated sports seats, now with added cushioning in the seat and backrest areas for greater long-distance comfort. They provide strong lateral support, wide adjustment ranges, manual seat-depth and head-restraint adjustment, and lumbar support for the driver. High-quality Veganza upholstery, standard in either Black or Copper Brown, delivers a leather-like feel and refined comfort. The BMW M interior design in Black/Atlas Grey Veganza/Alcantara is available with the M Sport Package and adds M logos to the backrests. With sports seats, the instrument panel and door trims are always finished in Black Veganza.

Multifunction seats with ventilation and massage are available through the optional Luxury Seating Package or Climate Package. They add electric adjustment for seat depth and head-restraint height, plus dedicated ventilation in the seat cushion and backrest, and four-way lumbar support. Multifunction seats upholstered in Veganza are available in Black, Copper Brown, or Silverstone. If the M Sport Package or M Sport Package Professional package is chosen, the BMW M interior design in Black/Atlas Grey becomes available.

BMW Individual Merino Leather is offered exclusively with multifunction seats and is available in Black, Adelaide Grey, Smoke White, Tartufo, and Vintage Coffee, a finish with a rich, sophisticated patina. Matching Alcantara covers the instrument panel, front door trims, and Anthracite headliner. Merino Leather seat surfaces combine with Alcantara side inserts to create a refined matte-gloss contrast.

Rear-seat comfort also improves, with a two-degree flatter torso angle and increased knee room made possible in part by the 2.4-inch longer wheelbase. Even the Isofix mounts are finished to match the selected Veganza or BMW Individual Merino Leather upholstery.

The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats include a through-loading system, while the center armrest integrates two cup holders that can also serve as a smartphone tray. With BMW Individual Merino Leather, the rear seats add matching neck cushions and an Alcantara center-armrest cushion.

Available automatic doors with standard Soft Close make entry and exit effortless.

Automatic doors are available on the BMW X5 as part of the optional Luxury Package. A touch of the BMW Winglet door handle opens or closes each door, with additional control available from interior door buttons, the My BMW App, voice commands, or BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X. Once seated, the driver can close the door by pressing the brake pedal.

Standard Soft Close pulls the doors shut smoothly, reinforcing the X5’s premium feel every time occupants enter or exit. An integrated servo motor allows the doors to be opened and closed manually with minimal effort. Radar sensors in the side skirts, front end, and rear enable quick operation and precise obstacle detection, helping protect against nearby objects and approaching road users.

BMW Digital Key Plus turns compatible devices into secure, shareable vehicle keys.

BMW Digital Key Plus enables compatible smartphones and smartwatches from leading manufacturers to function as the vehicle key. Ultra-wideband and Bluetooth technology allow close-range communication between device and vehicle, precisely locating the user while supporting a high level of access security certified by the Car Connectivity Consortium.

Customers can also share BMW Digital Key Plus easily and securely through a messaging app, assigning individual roles and permissions. Additional wallet-based functions include remote operation of the tailgate.

With BMW Digital Key Plus, the welcome experience begins as the driver approaches. Standard BMW Iconic Glow exterior lighting offers RELAXED, BALANCED, and EXCITED animations, while a touch of a BMW Winglet unlocks the vehicle. Inside, BMW Panoramic Vision and the Central Display continue the greeting as the driver settles in. The phone can stay in a pocket from approach to drive-off, and a goodbye light animation confirms locking when the driver walks away.

New steering wheels make shy-tech operation more intuitive.

The new BMW X5 steering wheels combine striking design, refined materials, and improved ergonomics. The standard multifunction steering wheel uses a self-supporting structure with a slightly flattened shape and vertical spoke, eliminating horizontal spokes to create a more natural grip. Integrated into BMW Panoramic iDrive, it provides haptic feedback and follows the shy-tech principle by illuminating driver-assistance controls only when they are available.

The sports steering wheel is available with the BMW M Sport Package and can also be paired with the Silver Bronze interior accent. Its vertical spoke carries a BMW M badge and is finished in black Veganza with Dark Silver or Silver Bronze accents, depending on specification.

The BMW Individual steering wheel is finished in Smoke White with a Dark Silver accent bar and is available with the BMW Individual Smoke White Merino Leather interior.

Included with the M Sport Package Professional, the BMW M leather steering wheel has a sportier geometry, no vertical spoke, and a black 12-o’clock marker to support confident control during dynamic cornering.

BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X delivers driver orientation, BMW-style.

BMW Panoramic iDrive represents the latest generation of BMW’s display and operating concept. Centered on the interaction between driver and vehicle, it links displays, controls, and software into an intuitive, ergonomic system that presents relevant information clearly and at the right time.

At its heart is BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects content across the full width of the lower windshield. Driving information appears on the left in the driver’s field of vision without obstructing the road ahead, while the center and right areas can be personalized and viewed by all passengers.

The standard BMW 3D Head-Up Display, positioned above BMW Panoramic Vision, projects selected information directly into the driver’s line of sight, including navigation guidance and driver assistance content. The two displays are precisely coordinated to create one consistent, clearly structured visual experience.

The 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display is the primary touch interface within BMW Panoramic iDrive. Matrix backlight technology provides crisp graphics and strong readability in varied lighting, while the free-cut shape supports ideal ergonomic placement. QuickSelect simplifies menu navigation for fast, intuitive control.

Widgets can be moved from the Central Display to BMW Panoramic Vision by drag and drop, with up to six arranged for quick access to frequently used functions. Additional widget content and submenus can be controlled through the new multifunction steering wheel.

The multifunction steering wheel employs the shy-tech philosophy, meaning its controls are only illuminated when a feature is available. The controls for driving and parking assistance are located on the left side, while those for infotainment functions, such as phone calls or the media player, can be found on the right. These functions can be operated via a specially designed control panel that provides haptic feedback, allowing the driver to control key functions safely and accurately without taking their eyes off the road.

BMW Panoramic iDrive is underpinned by the BMW Operating System X software. This serves as an intelligent platform for the display and operating system and is designed explicitly for a software-defined vehicle (SDV) approach. The architecture is based on the Android Open-Source Project (AOSP) and offers excellent update and upgrade capabilities. This means that the system stays up to date for a long time and allows the continuous addition of new functions and digital services. BMW Operating System X meticulously manages all interaction elements and ensures information is consistently presented in a context-sensitive manner that suits the situation at hand.

One of the system’s key features is its wide-ranging customizability. Content, widgets, and displays are individually configurable, allowing them to be adapted to personal preferences. Users can select colors, display schemes, and background images to create a personalized digital experience. They will also be able to set their own pictures as the background image for the Central Display using the My BMW App. The appearance of the user interface design colors across all displays automatically adjusts to the selected image. Drivers have a wealth of options for tailoring the user interface design as they wish in Personal mode, enabling even greater customization of displays, interactions, and vehicle-related settings. Further My Modes, such as SPORT, EFFICIENT and SILENT, add to the range of personal setups available to customers.

The BMW ID opens the door to the customizable driving experience with BMW Operating System X. Up to seven different users can sign in with their BMW ID, allowing them to enjoy every drive to the fullest with their individual settings. Before setting off, a message greeting the driver by name – together with their personal profile picture if desired – will automatically appear in the Central Display.

The interplay between the BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW 3D Head-Up Display, Central Display, and multifunction steering wheel – all controlled by BMW Operating System X – creates a consistent, clearly structured display and operating concept. Physical and digital controls combine to deliver a seamless user experience that is designed specifically for driver orientation and ergonomics. In the process, the “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” principle is reinterpreted and elevated to a more advanced technological level.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, enhanced by Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology.

The multimodal operating logic of BMW Panoramic iDrive combines touch, haptic and voice-based interactions. The enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant plays a key role here, enabling numerous vehicle functions, navigation destination entry, and media content to be controlled using natural language, without the need for defined voice commands.

The self-learning assistant turns the vehicle into an intelligent digital companion. The voice assistant can be summoned in the usual way with the prompt “Hey BMW” or the push of a button on the steering wheel’s right-hand control panel. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can help to control the windows, air conditioning, seating comfort, phone calls, in-car entertainment and far more besides. It can also be used to call up a large number of function menus or operate certain apps.

The addition of Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant increases the range of functions even further. The integration of Amazon Alexa+ into the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant marks a technological leap forward focused on adding value for the customer. The AI technology used is a large language model (LLM), a type of generative AI that “understands” language and can formulate its own responses. This results in more dialogue-based verbal interaction, enabling intuitive and intelligent exchanges, access to external knowledge bases, cloud-based services, and media content, as well as control of vehicle functions. Linking the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to an Amazon account allows the user to search for and stream music, listen to the latest news and access a wide range of other content effortlessly.

At the driver’s request, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also able to offer proactive suggestions based on usage patterns and other factors. BMW Operating System X further expands this intelligent capability by taking far more contexts into account, e.g., based on the driving situation, environmental analysis, or interior sensing.

Additional capabilities for driver support have been added to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with the “Routines” function. It is now easy for the driver to teach a routine to the assistant, thereby maximizing individual driving pleasure. For example, if the driver sets the automatic climate control to maximum cooling and switches on seat ventilation whenever the temperature exceeds 80 degrees in summer, these actions can easily be combined into a routine that is carried out automatically. This works equally well in winter with the heated steering wheel, heated seats, and defrost function. The driver can also create personalized routines based on defined personal conditions, such as situation, seat occupancy, time, and temperature.

BMW Passenger Screen takes entertainment for the front passenger to the next level.

The optional BMW Passenger Screen has been specifically designed to provide entertainment for the front passenger during a journey. The 14.6-inch full-HD display allows easy and intuitive multi-touch operation. The screen seems to merge seamlessly with the Central Display with free-cut design, giving the front passenger full access to the wide-ranging BMW Entertainment offering. The package includes video streaming and TV programs, gaming, music, and much more. The interior camera can be used for video conferencing on the go. Log-in with a BMW ID is not required. BMW Digital Premium – included for four years at no charge when the optional passenger Screen is selected – includes the necessary data allowance and is available on all the car’s displays.

An integrated shield function ensures the driver can stay focused on the task of driving at all times. The interior camera detects any driver distraction while on the move and automatically darkens the display.

If there is no front passenger in the car, the BMW Passenger Screen will automatically switch to a reduced mode and blend harmoniously into the other displays inside the BMW. Here, the display background is adjusted to suit the active My Mode and the ambient lighting.

First-class in-car entertainment – greatly enhanced entertainment offering, including apps from popular third-party providers.
BMW Operating System X offers customers a broader range of in‑car entertainment than ever before. They can opt for the convenience of using the extensive app, video and gaming portfolio with the data included with the BMW Digital Premium package. Or they can provide their own connectivity by using their smartphone as a mobile hotspot or logging in to a Wi-Fi network. A single connection per car is all that is required, and this is then available to enjoy entertainment offerings on the optional BMW Passenger Screen.

Customers are also able to access the Video app (powered by TiVo™), which provides an ever-expanding range of content, such as news and live/on demand streaming platforms. Videos can be streamed on the Central Display and the optional BMW Passenger Screen when the vehicle is stationary. This functionality remains available to use on the BMW Passenger Screen while on the move. When the vehicle is stationary, customers can sign in with existing accounts to resume movies or series from the exact point they left off at home.

The AirConsole app provided by BMW Operating System X offers great entertainment for all passengers – with world-famous classics that have been specially adapted for the in-car gaming experience, such as UNO® Car Party!. Hot Wheels: Xtreme Overdrive™️ from Mattel is another highlight of the extensive AirConsole gaming library. With AirConsole, players can use their smartphones as controllers, allowing all passengers to play with or against each other.

Customers can obtain further games and apps for in-car entertainment from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. Selected games can now also be controlled with the Bluetooth controllers for standard games consoles. The BMW ConnectedDrive Store already features more than 60 apps worldwide. Categories include music & audio, entertainment, gaming, news, and travel & local – and the choice will continue to grow.

BMW Digital Premium: the flexible, complete package for entertainment, security functions, and extended navigation features.
The optional BMW Digital Premium includes the Security Assistant, which comprises a host of useful functions to give the customer greater peace of mind. For instance, attempted thefts and parking bumps will trigger push notifications in the My BMW App. And in the event of an accident, the BMW Drive Recorder instantly makes exterior footage of what happened available in the car, and this recording can then be exported to a mobile phone. The anti-theft and parking collision recorder also makes automatic video recordings. The Remote Inside and Remote 3D View functions additionally allow customers to take a glance inside their car and check its immediate vicinity using the My BMW App.

In addition, BMW Digital Premium expands the range of navigation functions within BMW Maps. Additional real‑time traffic information, satellite views, 3D building models and proactive tips assist with accurate and anticipatory route planning. Information on parking facilities and points of interest is also presented in greater detail. Precise and realistic visualization of traffic lanes facilitates navigation guidance when dealing with complex road layouts in cities.

The data required for entertainment functions is included with BMW Digital Premium, meaning there is no need for customers to provide a data connection by using a smartphone as a hotspot or signing in to a Wi-Fi network. This connection can be used with the Central Display and the optional BMW Passenger Screen. What’s more, the 5G-ready vehicle telematics system ensures the best possible streaming speed at all times. And with BMW Digital Premium, new functions and services can be added at any time – ensuring that the digital user experience will always remain up-to-date and connected.

An even smarter ride with extended functions in the My BMW App.
Since launching in 2020, the My BMW App has become a key component of the BMW experience, with more than 16 million active users worldwide. Designed for genuine software-defined vehicles (SDV) with completely new electronic and software architecture, the Neue Klasse technology forms the basis for mobile services: real-time interaction, more in-depth access to functions for a wider range of remote services and personalization, as well as new connection options for passengers in the vehicle itself. This new quality of integration delivers new experiences in the BMW X5 and contains a high level of potential for future innovation. Highlights include:

• Extended remote functions in real time: for operating vehicle functions remotely in real-time – including raising/lowering the windows, preconditioning the cabin with temperature adjustments and activation of seat heating, and setting charging windows for the BMW iX5 and plug-in hybrid models.
• Passenger remote control: passengers are now able to connect their My BMW App with the car quickly and simply by scanning a QR code. This allows them to easily control vehicle functions, such as music playback, temperature settings, lighting, and navigation control.
• Updates to Digital Key Remote Controls: initial functions in iOS can be operated with Siri; shortcuts with an iPhone or Apple Watch.

Effortless smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
Wireless use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also included as standard. Any available metadata for media titles or route guidance instructions that are active in the current mode is shown to the driver in the BMW Panoramic Vision and BMW 3D Head-Up Display in an intelligently presented form. The QuickSelect widgets remain available on the Central Display, while content projected from the smartphone is embedded alongside these so that it fits into the display’s shape. Once linked, the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto icon will be added to the menu bar, allowing the projected content to be displayed in full-screen mode.

Flexibility even after buying the vehicle: software updates and extended choice of BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades
BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades allow customers to add further digital products and services to their vehicle after they have bought it. All BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades give customers the option of activating a free trial period. Depending on the product at hand, these functions can be booked for the vehicle’s lifetime, one year or one month. They can be obtained from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store either via an internet browser, in the My BMW App or directly from the car.

The BMW ConnectedDrive Store serves as the main gateway for customers wishing to obtain third-party apps, download BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades or manage existing downloads.

Over-the-air software updates will also ensure the new BMW X5 is always kept up to date. The update capability and updating process have been carefully refined and simplified for BMW Operating System X. Updates can even be carried out automatically, if desired.

The first battery-electric BMW iX5.
The new BMW iX5 60 xDrive launches with sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, combining a new electric powertrain with a completely redesigned high-voltage battery concept first introduced in the BMW iX3. Known as Gen6, the 800V system delivers significantly increased range, faster charging, and bidirectional charging capability, and a standard NACS charging port.

Gen6 also introduces newly developed electric motors and high-voltage batteries with cylindrical cells, delivering 20 percent greater energy density than the previous Gen5 prismatic battery cells.

New lithium-ion cylindrical cells increase energy density.
The BMW iX5 is the first model to use new 120-millimeter-high cylindrical cells in the high-voltage battery. Measuring 46 millimeters in diameter, they use the same cell chemistry as the 95-millimeter-high cells in the BMW iX3, with the increased height raising usable cell energy by almost 30 percent.

Cell-to-pack design supports 144 kWh of net usable energy.

The cylindrical cells are integrated directly into the BMW iX5 high-voltage battery without modules or additional structural elements. This cell-to-pack design increases pack-level energy density while helping reduce weight and cost.

Energy Master: intelligent central control for all-electric models.

The Energy Master houses the high-voltage battery electronics and is positioned directly on the battery. New to Gen6 and developed in-house by BMW, it supplies power to the electric motors and onboard electrical systems while managing battery data for intelligent, efficient, and safe operation.

Two highly efficient electric motors with EESM and ASM technology.
The BMW iX5 60 xDrive uses one electric motor at each axle, producing a combined 570 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque. The rear axle, the primary drive axle, features an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) developed for the 800V architecture. As the core of Gen6 drive technology, it produces 325 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Unlike motors with permanent magnets, the EESM is based on a stator that induces a rotating magnetic field with three-phase alternating current and a rotor with electrically excited electromagnets. The design of the EESM is therefore fundamentally different from that of motors with permanent magnets, allowing the magnetic field to be adjusted to the driving situation. This reduces losses at low loads and enables strong magnetic fields under high load for high torque and consistent power delivery. An inverter manages current conversion, rotor excitation, and control functions to keep the EESM operating at high efficiency.

An asynchronous motor (ASM) at the front axle adds 245 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque. Compact, robust, and heat-resistant, the ASM uses induction rather than magnets or electrical excitation. Because it creates no drag loss when de-energized, it can switch off at reduced loads, allowing the BMW iX5 to drive on the rear axle alone for greater efficiency.

The BMW iX5 60 xDrive accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 4.4 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. The first-ever BMW iX5 has an estimated electric range of up to 435 miles (preliminary estimate based on BMW AG testing using EPA procedures).

Gen6 supports charging up to 460 kW DC and enables bidirectional charging capability.
The BMW iX5 enters a new era of charging speed, range, and convenience. Its Gen6 high-voltage battery supports higher charging capacity through 800V technology, while a control unit with integrated switching matrix enables charging at 400V DC stations. With charging rates of up to 460 kW, charging from 10 to 80 percent takes just 22 minutes, and customers can add an estimated 170 miles of range in just 10 minutes (preliminary estimate based on BMW AG testing using EPA test procedures). On AC power, the BMW iX5 charges at up to 15.4 kW as standard.

Battery preparation brings the high-voltage battery to the ideal temperature before DC charging, increasing charging capacity immediately after connection and reducing charging time. When BMW Maps is actively navigating to a DC charging station, the BMW iX5 automatically warms or cools the battery. Drivers can also activate preparation manually through the Central Display or My BMW App, where battery temperature status and remaining preparation time are always visible.

Charging-optimized route planning in BMW Maps makes long-distance electric driving easier. If the destination cannot be reached with the available range, the system calculates an efficient route with charging stops, based on the driver’s preferred arrival charge levels and charging station operators. Using AI from previous charging cycles, it can consider expected charging capacity, reliability, and precise station location data when selecting stops. The intelligent charging flap also recognizes when the customer intends to charge and opens or closes automatically.

Every new BMW iX5 also includes extensive bidirectional charging capability, allowing it to serve as an energy source in multiple ways. Vehicle-to-Load turns the BMW iX5 into a mobile power bank for electrical devices, Vehicle-to-Home allows it to provide power during an outage, and Vehicle-to-Vehicle enables connection to vehicles in need of electrical power.

High-efficiency internal combustion engine with 48V mild hybrid technology.
The BMW X5 40 and 40 xDrive are powered by the latest BMW 3.0-liter inline-six, part of the current BMW EfficientDynamics engine family. A new turbocharger raises output by 19 hp to 394 hp, while maximum torque increases from 383 to 428 lb-ft. The BMW X5 40 models accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, or 4.8 seconds with a 1-foot rollout, and reach an electronically limited top speed of up to 155 mph when properly equipped.

The extensively updated B58 engine uses the Miller combustion cycle to improve efficiency by shortening intake-valve opening times. Optimized intake ports and combustion chambers, an ignition system with active coils and integrated electronics, electric VANOS variable camshaft timing, and an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head further enhance performance and efficiency. Switchable exhaust-side rocker arms can interrupt gas exchange, reducing drag torque on overrun by around two thirds and allowing more braking energy to be recovered by the 48V mild hybrid system.

A dual injection system combines high-pressure injection with a low-pressure supply to the combustion chambers. This improves flow characteristics in the intake ports and cylinders, helping reduce particle buildup and CO2 emissions.

48V mild hybrid system with crankshaft-mounted starter generator in the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.
At the heart of the 48V mild hybrid system is an electric motor integrated with the power electronics in the compact housing of the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. Acting as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator, it helps the combustion engine deliver smooth, dynamic, and efficient performance.

Depending on the driving situation, the mild hybrid system provides up to 148 lb-ft of torque and up to 17 hp of electric boost for sharper response when pulling away or accelerating. The starter generator also makes Automatic Start/Stop operation smoother. Energy for the boost function is stored in a 48V battery beneath the luggage compartment, charged mainly through recuperation during overrun and braking. The same battery also supplies the vehicle’s 12V electrical system through a voltage transformer.

The BMW X5 50e xDrive.

The BMW X5 50e xDrive pairs the updated six-cylinder inline engine with a synchronous electric motor rated at 194 hp. Integrated with the power electronics inside the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, the motor requires no additional installation space. It draws energy from a fifth-generation high-voltage lithium-ion battery in the underbody, with 26.5 kWh of usable energy.

Together, the combustion engine and electric drive produce 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of system torque, with the straight-six contributing 308 hp. The BMW X5 50e xDrive accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, can reach an electronically limited 155 mph, and can travel up to 87 mph in pure electric mode. The estimated all-electric range is up to a very practical 44 miles (preliminary estimate based on BMW AG testing using EPA test procedures), an improvement of about 15 percent from the previous generation.

Refined chassis technology delivers signature BMW dynamics with elevated comfort.
For the fifth-generation BMW X5, BMW has further refined the balance of dynamic capability and long-distance comfort. The double-wishbone front axle, five-link rear axle, and chassis systems are adapted to each model and drivetrain, while increased track width, standard mixed-size tires, and additional body stiffness enhance precision. New acoustically decoupled steering and a new steering gear further improve comfort and control.

The Heart of Joy with BMW Dynamic Performance Control opens a new dimension in the all-electric BMW iX5.
Advanced, highly connected driving dynamics systems help the new BMW X5 use available grip to full effect. Combustion-engine and plug-in hybrid models use tenth-generation Lateral Dynamics Management and near-actuator wheel slip limitation for fast, precise control. Lateral Dynamics Management coordinates agility-related functions, including intelligent all-wheel drive, while stabilization and engine management remain part of BMW’s proven network of specialized control units.

The all-electric BMW iX5 models and future BMW iX5 Hydrogen go further with Neue Klasse technology. Their additional “Superbrain,” the Heart of Joy with BMW Dynamic Performance Control, was developed fully in-house and acts up to ten times faster than previous systems. It adjusts the drive system, brakes, steering functions, charging, and recuperation in milliseconds, using the electric drive system to support performance and efficiency with unprecedented precision.

The result is composed, precise handling that reinterprets The Ultimate Driving Machine for the BMW iX5. The Heart of Joy reduces corrective inputs, supports consistent cornering behavior, and increases driver confidence. It also enables exceptionally smooth stopping and improves efficiency by expanding recuperation to more driving situations, including deceleration to a standstill.

Both driving stacks are tailored to their respective powertrains, helping deliver the precise, confidence-inspiring driving experience expected of a BMW. Future models will also benefit from high-performance driving dynamics management optimized for each powertrain variant.

Enhanced Trailer Stability Control supports confident towing.
Optimized trailer sway logic helps the new BMW X5 recognize trailer movement early and counteract it quickly. Depending on equipment, the system can intervene in several ways. For the first time, the all-electric BMW iX5 can use the optional rear-wheel steering to help stabilize a trailer, adding comfort and confidence while towing. If sway becomes more pronounced, all models can use braking intervention to stabilize the vehicle and trailer.

Standard 21-inch wheels, with 22-inch and 23-inch options available.
Larger wheels and tires further support the new BMW X5’s improved driving characteristics. Standard 21-inch wheels are paired with mixed-size tires measuring 255 millimeters at the front and 285 millimeters at the rear. Optional 22-inch (with either all-season or summer tires) and 23-inch wheels are also available.

Near 50:50 weight distribution and adaptive suspension as standard.
The new BMW X5 boasts adaptive suspension as standard, with dampers controlled electronically at each individual wheel, and weight distribution close to 50:50. Continuous adjustment of the damping can fine-tune the suspension across a wide range extending from high ride comfort to sporty, dynamic driving. Alternatively, the driver can also use the My Modes to select a basic setting for the adaptive suspension, ranging from comfort to dynamic.

Adjustable vehicle height can be used to improve ride comfort or increase efficiency.
One component of the optional adaptive two-axle air suspension is the automatic self-levelling function, which keeps the vehicle at the desired height regardless of the load. This means that the suspension’s full range of spring travel is always available to absorb any uneven surfaces and it will provide optimal ride characteristics, no matter how heavily laden the vehicle is. The adaptive two‑axle air suspension also provides the option of adjusting the vehicle’s ride height automatically or manually. The driver can choose from three settings in the Air Suspension menu. With the Auto setting, the vehicle automatically adjusts to the current driving speed and the selected My Mode. The starting level is maintained up to a speed of approximately 87 mph, at which point vehicle ride height lowers by 10 millimeters. Ride height lowers a further 10 millimeters above 124 mph or automatically if Sport or Sport + chassis settings are selected in My Modes. This lowers the center of gravity and reduces the vehicle’s air resistance. For the High setting, the vehicle is raised by 20 millimeters, increasing the ground clearance when not on paved roads, or when driving over obstacles or using garage exit ramps, for example. The Low setting lowers the BMW X5 by 40 millimeters when parked, making loading more comfortable and ensuring that it is easier to get in and out of the vehicle. The lowering option can now be selected while the vehicle is moving, which was not possible before. The vehicle is then lowered automatically when it comes to a stop. When restarted, the BMW X5 automatically returns to the Auto setting.

Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with roll stabilization for BEV and PHEV for the ultimate in signature BMW driving dynamics combined with maximum ride comfort.
Adaptive Chassis Control Professional is available as an optional extra to maximize the dynamic prowess of the all-electric BMW iX5 and the X5 50e xDrive. It features active roll stabilization that uses a 48V electric motor positioned in the center of each axle and active anti-roll bars to ensure fast and precise compensation of the lateral forces inducing body roll when driving through corners. Adaptive Chassis Control Professional improves agility, directional accuracy, and driving precision, while also enabling highly dynamic steering response thanks to its ability to stabilize body roll more effectively. As a result, the driver enjoys extremely precise reactions from the steering and impressive agility.

Active roll stabilization also increases comfort when driving in a straight line by decoupling the fixed connection between each axle’s wheels provided by a conventional anti-roll bar. As a result, suppression of body vibrations is also improved when driving straight ahead or at low levels of lateral acceleration: since the adaptive two-axle air suspension with self-levelling function maintains the full range of spring travel even when the vehicle is heavily laden, the addition of active roll stabilization makes it possible to activate a softer air spring setting and increase ride comfort. The amount of body roll caused by surface imperfections on one side of the vehicle when driving in a straight line is reduced thanks to the decoupled anti-roll bars. This has the effect of decreasing the lateral acceleration forces and the obtrusive side-to-side head movements that these can cause. As well as reducing rolling movements caused by bumps in the road on one side of the car, the Active Roll Comfort function goes further still by actively adjusting the body height on the corresponding side of the vehicle at the same time.

Integral Active Steering makes even lighter work of maneuvering with an improved turning circle, increases agility at low and moderate speeds, and optimizes poise and assurance when changing lanes at high speed. To this end, the rear wheels are turned in either the same or the opposite direction to the front wheels – depending on road speed – by up to 3.2 degrees. Steering the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels at low speeds reduces the turning circle of the BMW X5 by around 2.5 feet.

BMW Symbiotic Drive keeps the driver engaged in the interaction between human and artificial intelligence.
BMW’s advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems are designed for seamless cooperation between driver and vehicle. Rather than pursuing the highest possible automation in every situation, BMW focuses on assistance that is useful, controllable, and confidence inspiring. Even when assistance is active, the driver can accelerate, steer, or brake without deactivating the system. Clear displays and operating logic in BMW Panoramic iDrive help make assisted driving intuitive while supporting safe use of the highest SAE Level 2 automation.

BMW Symbiotic Drive also shapes the behavior of active safety systems such as Lane Keeping Assistant. Operating unobtrusively in the background, these systems interpret steering behavior and driver gaze to help determine intent, intervening with warnings or steering support only when unintentional lane departure or a potential collision is detected.

Optional Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving on suitable highways at speeds up to 85 mph.
Highway Assistant allows the driver to take their hands off the wheel for extended periods on suitable limited-access highways at speeds up to 85 mph, when weather and traffic conditions permit. The driver must remain attentive and ready to intervene. Enhanced with Active Lane Change with Eye Activation, the system can recommend a lane change when the X5 approaches slower traffic. A glance toward the appropriate exterior mirror confirms the maneuver, and the vehicle signals and changes lanes when it is safe to do so.

Standard Driving Assistant Plus supports steering, braking, and speed control.
Driving Assistant Plus comes standard on the BMW X5 and can help control speed, maintain distance from the vehicle ahead, and keep the X5 centered in its lane at the driver’s request. The system can also adjust speed to detected limits and for upcoming corners, roundabouts, and turns. As with all driver assistance systems, the driver must remain alert and ready to take over at any time.

BMW Symbiotic Drive with BMW Soft Stop supports smooth recuperative braking to a standstill.
In the BMW iX5 and upcoming BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the Heart of Joy works with BMW Dynamic Performance Control to manage drive, braking, steering subfunctions, charging, and recuperation. In all-electric BMW iX5 variants with driver assistance activated, the Superbrain of Automated Driving enables BMW Soft Stop, using precise electric-motor control to bring the vehicle to an exceptionally smooth stop without jerking or brake noise. In everyday driving, recuperation handles nearly all braking; conventional brakes are reserved for enthusiastic driving or emergency braking.

An expanded suite of standard active safety functions builds on the outgoing model.
BMW Symbiotic Drive helps active safety functions intervene only when a risk is detected, and the driver is distracted or not fully in control. Standard features include Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Detection, Side Collision Protection, and Crossing Traffic Warning with Brake Intervention when turning into a road or leaving a parking space. Emergency Brake Assistant with Evasion Assistant helps prevent frontal collisions with maximum braking when needed and can now respond to wildlife crossing the road. Exit warning can also delay door opening when, for example, a cyclist is approaching.

Parking Assistant Plus adds AI-supported parking space detection and maneuver planning.
Optional Parking Assistant Plus on the new BMW X5 supports swift, smooth semi-automated parking. A redesigned surround visualization makes detected spaces easier to select, while the system provides 360-degree views with curb, 3D, and car wash perspectives. Maneuver Assistant can record and repeat recurring maneuvers up to 600 feet. The optional Parking Assistant Professional adds Remote Control Parking and stored-maneuver control from up to 15 feet away using the My BMW App. Driving and parking assistance functions can also be activated later through the BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

• New landmark celebrates Plant Spartanburg's role as the global home of BMW X Sports Utility Vehicles.

Spartanburg, S.C. – June 30, 2026… BMW today unveiled a new “Home of X” sculpture outside the BMW Zentrum in South Carolina, creating a bold new landmark that celebrates Plant Spartanburg's role as the global home of BMW X Sports Utility Vehicles and serves as a lasting symbol of BMW's commitment to South Carolina and the United States.

Designed by Designworks, a BMW Group company, the sculpture transforms the iconic "X" into an immersive architectural experience that visitors can walk through, gather around and interact with. The sculpture reflects the significance of Plant Spartanburg, where BMW X models are assembled for customers around the world, and reinforces the plant's identity as the Home of X.

Rising from a base bearing the outline of the United States, the sculpture's twisting, illuminated form reflects the innovation, capability and forward-looking spirit that define the BMW X family. Rather than representing any single vehicle, the sculpture captures the broader character of BMW X and the significance of Plant Spartanburg, which has played a central role in the success of the BMW X family.

"The goal was to create something that immediately communicates the significance of Plant Spartanburg," said Julia De Bono, CEO/Studio Director of Designworks. The technology narrative highlights the innovation and manufacturing expertise behind the BMW X models assembled in South Carolina.

Designed as more than a traditional sculpture, the sculpture invites visitors to become part of the experience. Open spaces within the structure create places to sit, gather and reflect, while integrated lighting transforms the sculpture throughout the day and night. Its upward-reaching form serves as a beacon, symbolizing the continued evolution of the BMW X family and BMW's future in the United States.

"Designing this sculpture as an automotive designer meant translating a motion-driven visual language into something permanently still," said Nicola Mondini, Creative Director, Automotive Design, Designworks. Each of the three zones inside the Zentrum is designed to immerse visitors in a distinct dimension of the Spartanburg story. In the territory zone, milestone BMW X models are paired with diverse American landscapes, guiding visitors on a journey through the plant's history and its deep roots in the US. The technology zone offers a window directly into the manufacturing process, bringing the precision and innovation behind each X model to life. The community zone follows two parallel journeys: the making of a vehicle on the assembly line, told through the faces and hands of the workers who bring it to life, and the story of a person's relationship with BMW, from first encounter to devoted driver—capturing the emotional connection between the brand and the lives it touches.

Unique colors and trims distinguish the X5 Silver Anniversary Edition.

Visually, the X5 Silver Anniversary Edition is distinguished by its unique blend of styling details taken from both the Sport and M Sport Designs.  Extended Shadowline Trim, usually reserved for X5s equipped with the M Sport and M Sport Professional packages, darkens the trim on the window surrounds, roof rails, fender mounted Air Breathers, and the standard illuminated kidney grille. The package is not offered on any other current BMW X model and augments the X5 Silver Anniversary Edition’s off-road capability by adjusting the vehicle’s settings depending on the terrain. Via the Driver Experience Control switch on the center console, the driver can choose between xSnow, xSand, xGravel, and xRocks. Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 7, 2023… New design details, expanded standard equipment, electrification across-the-board, and advancements in digital technology define the next stage in the evolution of BMW’s X5 Sports Activity Vehicle and X6 Sports Activity Coupe. The entire range of powertrains has been comprehensively reengineered. The plug-in hybrid drive in the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e has significantly more power and a greater purely electric range than its predecessor. And the introduction of 48V mild-hybrid technology to the V8 engine has increased its power, performance, and refinement. Also pointing the way into the future are new systems for automated driving and parking, plus the latest-generation iDrive control system with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8.

The new BMW X5: new design elements, illuminated BMW kidney grille. 

The front fascia of the 2024 BMW X5 is characterized by a new design for the signature BMW headlights and kidney grille. The outlines of the new headlight units are 35 millimeters narrower. Its arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements point outwards and also serve as turn signal indicators.

The illuminated BMW kidney grille can be specified for the first time as an option on BMW X5 xDrive50e, X5 sDrive 40i, and X5 xDrive40i. The illumination is activated when one of the doors is opened and can be switched on or off manually by the driver via the iDrive menu.

The BMW kidney grille is now bordered by sculpted surfaces which bring a modern appeal to the front end. Vertical air curtains positioned at the outer edges emphasise the width of the new X5, and the lower air intake has a new horizontal trim detail and triangular apertures in its outer areas.

Newly designed air breathers, LED rear lights with X motif. 

The air breathers in the front side panels of the BMW X5 also have a new design, with a dynamically curved element at the front – finished either in chrome or in black, depending on model or package – and three horizontal blades at their trailing edge.

At the rear, newly designed rear lights feature striking contours of fiber-optic light elements. The traditional L-shape is reflected horizontally, creating an ‘X’ motif within the rear lights.

The new BMW X5 can be specified with the optional M Sport package, which adds a front apron with M-specific design, roof rails in black high-gloss, M high-gloss Shadowline trim, and a rear apron with a dark-shaded inlay and trapezoidal tailpipe trim.

The new BMW X6: expressive front end design and standard M Sport package. 

The BMW X6 created the Sports Activity Coupe segment, and in its third generation it continues to embody a powerful sporting character and forceful visual presence. The long, swooping roofline and crisp contour lines create a dynamically stretched silhouette. 

As on the X5, the new X6 features slim headlight units with arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements. The dynamic intent of the new BMW X6 is futher highlighted by the now standard M Sport package, distinguished by an octagonal design element below the BMW kidney grille, prominent side apertures, and generous use of black surfaces.

Powerful styling at the back with slim lights extending well into the tailgate. 

M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss Shadowline trim express the athletic character of the new BMW X6. The taut surfacing of the flanks and muscular shoulder lines transition smoothly into a powerful design at the rear. The slim taillights reach far into the tailgate, and their light signature is defined by the familiar L-shape of the rear light and brake light bars.

Flagship models with distinctive design features. 

At the top of their respective model ranges, the new BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6 M60i xDrive feature unique design details. Features including double bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps in high-gloss black, and exhaust tailpipe trim in a quad-pipe style speak to the high performance attributes of the 8-cylinder models. The new BMW X6 M60i xDrive also has a subtle rear spoiler in high-gloss black. 

The M Sport Professional package can be added as an enhancement to any X5 or X6 model already equipped with the M Sport package. Visually, the M Sport Professional package adds a kidney grille surround in matte black, exhaust tailpipe trim in black chrome, and darkened M Shadowline lights. Also included in the M Sport Professional package, are M Sport brakes with a choice of red or blue calipers, and an M Sport exhaust system (standard on the M60i models, not available for the BMW X5 xDrive50e).

New paint colors include Marina Bay Blue metallic for the X5 M60i xDrive and Isle of Man Green metallic for the X6 M60i xDrive. Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic and Frozen Pure Grey metallic are new additions to the color range. 

From the start of production, customers will be able to choose from around 40 BMW Individual special paintwork shades for their new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. These exclusive paint options are applied by hand in a meticulous process and the spectrum of colors is being expanded all the time.

BMW Curved Display with intuitive touch control and natural voice interation. 

The fully digital BMW Curved Display is at the heart of the interior redesign for the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. It is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches – both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control functionality of the BMW control display has brought about a significant reduction in the number of buttons and controls in favor of digital control for various functions.

Sensafin surfacing for the dashboard and a highly functional light bar. 

The newly designed dashboard serves as the perfect stage for the BMW Curved Display. Its horizontal structure emphasises the width of the cabin, while the surfacing in standard leather-like Sensafin deepens the premium character of the interior. The central air vents in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are extremely slim and integrated into the instrument panel almost out of sight.

Another new interior feature is the ambient light bar with crystalline surface structure and crisp LED backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front passenger area. Interior light distribution, brightness, and choice of 15 colors can be configured via the iDrive menu. The ambient lighting system’s range of functions also includes the Welcome Light Carpet – which projects an unique graphic on the ground alongside the vehicle when the doors are unlocked or opened – and pulsating light signals that appear on the inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running.

Additional touch-sensitive surfaces are found on the new version of the control panel on the center console. It is home to the iDrive controller, engine start/stop button, and the buttons activating the electric parking brake, and the settings for the optional air suspension. Also found here are the Driving Experience Control buttons and the newly designed toggle gear selector. 

Exclusive glass applications for the selector toggle, the start/stop button, and the iDrive controller are included with the optional Executive Package.

Standard: sport seats in Sensafin upholstery. 

The standard sport seats in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 offer outstanding comfort as well as lateral support when the road gets twisty. Mulit-contour front seats are optional, and may be equipped with ventilation (as part of the Climate Comfort Package) and massage functions. The standard Sensafin upholstery, with its bold quilting decorative perforation, can be ordered in Silverstone, Coffee, Cognac, or Black (and striking Tacora Red is available on X6). Extended Merino leather is also available in Ivory, Coffee, Black, and Tartufo.

Powertrains with 48V mild-hybrid technology and an innovative plug-in hybrid system. 

A thoroughly updated range of engines, newly enhanced with electrification, enables the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 to deliver driving pleasure with greater poise, assurance, and efficiency. The V8 engines in the M60i models now benefit from 48V mild-hybrid technology, while the new X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid gains an extensively upgraded combustion engine and BMW eDrive technology that endows it with nearly 100 more horsepower while increasing the range of purely electric driving by 10 miles.

More power, more electric range: the BMW X5 xDrive50e.

The new BMW X5 xDrive50e combines a substantially revised gasoline engine with an electric drive unit to enhance both dynamic capability and efficiency. The new powertrain produces a maximum system output of up to 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque while permitting a preliminary estimated electric-only range of up to 40 miles.

The combustion engine and electric motor play an equal role in bringing these results. The latest incarnation of the 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology utilizes the highly efficient Miller combustion cycle, which shortens the time the intake valves are open. This power unit also features redesigned combustion chambers and intake ports, a new dual (direct and port) injection system, and a cylinder head with an integrated exhaust manifold. The VANOS variable camshaft timing now works electrically.

The electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission on the new BMW X5 xDrive50e boasts a substantial increase in power output and a novel innovation for boosting torque delivery. The new synchronous motor produces a nominal output of 194 hp – 83 more than the previous version. A pre-gearing stage is used to increase the effective torque produced by the electric motor to a maximum 331 lb-ft at the transmission input for the motor. In this way, the compact electric motor is able to provide the sort of torque boost that could normally only be achieved using a far larger and heavier unit. The improved build-up of power resulting from the pre-gearing stage between the electric motor’s rotor and the transmission’s input shaft makes a clear difference both when accelerating off the line and when putting in a quick burst of speed for passing. The new BMW X5 xDrive50e needs just 4.6 seconds to sprint from 0-60 mph in preliminary testing.

The electric motor draws its energy from a BMW 5^th generation high-voltage lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor. The battery can store 19.2 kWh of usable energy, an increase of about 12 percent compared with the preceding generation. A new Combined Charging Unit supports both single-phase and three-phase charging, doubling the maximum AC charging rate to 7.4 kW. Together with the electric motor’s excellent efficiency and the system of intelligent energy management, including adaptive recuperation, this results in an estimated electric range of up to 40 miles (estimated range of up to 40 miles according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test procedure standards).

Latest-generation 48V mild hybrid technology for the internal combustion engines. 

Electrification in the form of 48V mild hybrid technology enhances the effortless power delivery in the ICE variants of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6, while also increasing their efficiency. The 6 and 8-cylinder combustion engines are combined with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with an integrated electric motor. The electric motor generates an output boost of up to 12 hp and 147 lb-ft of torque, helping the engine to deliver a smooth, dynamic drive along with high efficiency. The electric motor has the additional effect of enabling smoother operation of both the Automatic Start/Stop function and the coasting function active when the ECO PRO mode is selected.

The energy required for the electric power boost is stored in a 48V battery located in the engine compartment. It is charged during overrun and braking by means of adaptive recuperation and also feeds the regenerated energy to the vehicle’s electrical system.

New V8 for the M60i models. 

The BMW X5 M60i xDrive and X6 M60i xDrive models are both powered by a newly developed TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. The 4.4-liter power unit can trace its genes back to engines used in motorsport, and utilizes the thermodynamic benefits of a cross-bank exhaust manifold, bank-symmetrical turbochargers, and external engine oil cooling. In addition, a reinforced crankshaft drive, further developed turbocharging with a blow-off valve, a new oil pump, and a weight-minimized oil sump all play a role in increasing the engine’s efficiency. The engine is paired with 48V mild hybrid technology to produce superior response and power delivery under acceleration.

In both models, the S68 engine produces 523 hp and peak torque of 553 lb-ft. It propels the new X5 M60i xDrive and new X6 M60i xDrive from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds in preliminary testing.

More power, lower emissions: the new inline 6. 

The power unit under the hood of the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X6 xDrive40i is part of a new generation of inline 6-cylinder engines, as is the engine in the BMW X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. The 3.0-liter unit’s output of 375 hp in these two models is up by 40 compared its predecessor, while peak torque rises by 51 lb-ft to 383 – and can be boosted to as much as 398 lb-ft with the input of the mild-hybrid system. It enables both the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and new BMW X6 xDrive40i to dash from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds in preliminary testing.

This version of the new straight-six engine also benefits from extensive innovations affecting the combustion process, camshaft control, injection, ignition system and exhaust gas routing. It also features the latest version of VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control. Its switchable rocker arms on the exhaust side allow gas exchange to be shut off entirely if required, thereby reducing the engine’s frictional torque on the overrun by around two thirds, resulting in greater recouperation of braking energy.

The latest-generation 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission fitted to all variants of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 comes with a host of innovations over and above the electric motor integrated into its housing. For example, the unit’s internal efficiency, vibration damping and isolation from rotational irregularities have all been optimized. A new electric transmission oil pump and a system of torsion dampers serve to increase not just efficiency, but also shift smoothness and driving comfort. And the shift characteristics are now adapted to the Driving Experience Control switch setting. The transmission automatically switches from the D setting to S when SPORT mode is activated.

In the 8-cylinder models and 6-cylinder models with the M Sport package, drivers will also be able to make use of the Sprint function when a quick burst of speed required. Here, the transmission automatically shifts into the lowest usable gear when the driver pulls the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second. At the same time, all of the powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sportiest settings and the mild-hybrid system’s electric boost effect is activated.

Optional chassis systems in newly structured packages. 

The Adaptive M Suspension fitted as standard on the X5 M60i, X6 xDrive40i, and X6 M60i models and optional on X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, results in a noticeably more direct connection to the road. Electronically controlled dampers refine handling dynamics as well as primary ride comfort. Electromagnetically adjustable hydraulic valves allow the compression and rebound settings to be adapted in unison to suit the driving situation. The dampers respond adaptively both to road surface conditions and to driving style. The driver can use the Driving Experience Control switch to choose between a comfort-focused mode and a stiffer damper setting for a sportier response.

The optional adaptive two-axle air suspension (standard on X5 xDrive50e) with automatic self-levelling employs an electrically driven compressor with pressure reservoir to maintain the optimum ride height at all speeds, regardless of how much load is being carried. The result is comfortable, assured handling. The ride height is automatically lowered by 10 millimeters at speeds above 86 mph.

Integral Active Steering for greater agility, comfort and maneuverability. 

Integral Active Steering is now standard on M60i versions of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 and has a beneficial effect on the vehicles’ agility, driving comfort, and maneuverability.

With Integral Active Steering, the rear wheels are turned in either the same direction as or the opposite direction to the front wheels, depending on road speed. This results in highly dynamic cornering abilities and assured lane changes at high speeds. Furthermore, the rear wheels can now be turned by up to three degrees until the vehicle is nearly stopped, reducing its turning circle when maneuvering into and out of parking spaces.

All 2024 X5s and X6s are fitted as standard with 20-inch wheels mounted on all-season runflat tires. Performance runflat tires are available in a 21-inch size, and performance non-runflat tires are available in a 22-inch size. Customers can choose from a selection of standard, M, and BMW Individual alloy wheels in 20, 21, and 22-inch sizes.

Driving Assistant Professional Package now offers Highway Assistant. 

The new Highway Assistant, part of the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package, ushers in a new dimension of assisted driving in the 2024 BMW X5 and X6, bringing with it new levels of convenience and stress-free travel over long distances. It allows the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel when driving on limited access highways at speeds up to 85 mph. Drivers must, however, always maintain focus on the road ahead and be prepared to assume responsibility for steering.

Assisted View in the instrument cluster gives the driver an overview of the activated systems and their functionality. The central area of the information display is reserved for a three-dimensional mock-up of the vehicle and its surroundings. Here, the driver can see an image of the cars, trucks and motorcycles detected by the cameras and sensors in the driver’s current lane, along with those in any adjacent lanes.

Parking Assistant Professional: enter and exit spaces by smartphone.

Drivers can also benefit from greater assistance when parking and maneuvering. The standard Reversing Assistant offers the option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-story parking garages or narrow curving driveways. The vehicle can store the steering movements for any section the vehicle has just driven forward through at no more than 22 mph. The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 50 meters by steering it back along the same route.

On models fitted with the optional Parking Assistant Professional, the Reversing Assistant is able to store steering movements for distances of up to 200 meters and then reproduce them in reverse. Furthermore, drivers now have the ability to control maneuvers into and out of especially tight parking spaces from outside the vehicle using the My BMW App on their smartphone (available for Apple iPhones with operating system iOS 16.2 or later).

In addition, the Maneuver Assistant now included in the Parking Assistant Professional package is able to store far more complex maneuvers using GPS data and the trajectory data from steering movements, and perform them as an automated routine. As many as ten maneuvers at different locations, covering a distance of up to 200 meters each and a combined total of 600 meters, can be recorded. When the vehicle arrives at a memorized starting point, the Maneuver Assistant will be able to carry out all the tasks required to complete the maneuver, controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering, as well as changing gear to move forward or reverse. If necessary, the vehicle can switch between the two directions of travel repeatedly while carrying out all the gear changes and steering inputs, for example when negotiating its way through a parking garage with little space and sharp corners. While the automated maneuver is in progress, the driver can focus on monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings. 

Drivers have the choice of controlling both the automated parking functionality and the Maneuver Assistant’s actions either from inside the vehicle or remotely using their iPhone. It is also possible to switch between the two modes, meaning that once an automated parking or other maneuver has begun, it can be interrupted at any time and then resumed from inside the vehicle or from outside using a smartphone. 

BMW Curved Display and latest-generation BMW iDrive. 

The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are fitted with the latest-generation BMW iDrive multi-sensory vehicle interface powered by BMW Operating System 8. Boasting new-generation software as well as powerful connectivity and data processing, it takes the interaction between the driver and vehicle into the digital future. The new BMW iDrive system offers more ways for drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment, and communication functions and also to use digital services. 

The user experience is supported by the seamless interaction between the touchscreen BMW Curved Display, the voice control, the iDrive controller, and the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. The display and operation system has been upgraded to include the latest version of the BMW head-up display, which offers a larger display area, enhanced graphics and additional content. The user experience can also be expanded to include the optional BMW Gesture Control.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with state-of-the-art graphics. 

The BMW Curved Display in the new BMW X5 and the new BMW X6 is formed by a 12.3-inch information display and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches. The screens are housed together behind a curved glass surface, so they merge into a single, fully digital, high-resolution unit. With its ergonomic, driver-centric positioning, the BMW Curved Display makes the already intuitive touch control even more user-friendly.

The BMW Curved Display’s state-of-the-art graphics and the operation system’s menu structure have been designed with a smartphone-style appearance. The clearly structured arrangement of widgets on the control display’s home screen provides a simple overview of the menu options and can be configured by the driver as desired.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. 

The new generation of BMW iDrive also sees the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gain additional skills. Instructions in natural speech can be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window or operate the panoramic glass roof, for instance. Various functions of the driver assistance systems in the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 can likewise be voice controlled. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also capable of recognizing user behavior and proactively making suggestions to the driver on how the vehicle can best be used.

When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new graphics appear in the displays to emphasize the system’s interactive character. The graphic “turns” towards the speaker, thereby visualizing how the system is listening attentively to what is being said. 

Precision navigating with Augmented View in the information display. 

The new Augmented View function included as part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional enables accurate guidance while driving by supplementing the navigation system’s map view. A live video stream from the driver’s perspective can be shown on either the control or information display and augmented by supplementary graphics that provide more specific, situation-based information. When dealing with confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route.

Welcome Scenario with lighting effect and personal greeting. 

The user experience starts before the driver has even reached the vehicle thanks to a newly devised Welcome Scenario. Ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology determines the precise location of the key or compatible smartphone relative to the vehicle.  Once the distance to the vehicle drops below three meters, the coordinated welcome sequence begins. It starts with an orchestrated lighting effect using the exterior and interior lights, including the light carpet. The vehicle automatically unlocks when the driver is about 1.5 meters away. Once inside, the BMW Curved Display shows a choreographed start-up animation with a personal greeting, along with handy suggestions and information. Finally, the BMW ID settings are loaded, and the smartphone connected.

BMW Digital Key Plus. 

BMW’s Comfort Access keyless entry system now also includes the BMW Digital Key Plus. This enables customers to lock and unlock their BMW X5 or BMW X6 via security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology from a compatible smartphone running either the iOS or Android operating system. A conventional car key is no longer required. Simply approaching the car or walking away triggers the unlocking or locking process; there is no need for the customer to even remove their smartphone from their pocket.

The BMW Digital Key Plus can be set up using the My BMW App. The car owner can also share it – and therefore access to the vehicle – with up to five other users who have a smartphone with either iOS or Android.

Emotionally engaging drive sound, even in locally emission-free driving mode: BMW IconicSounds Electric for the BMW X5 xDrive50e. 

With BMW IconicSounds Electric included as standard, the joy of driving while generating zero local emissions is accompanied by a special sound design inside the vehicle that provides authentic aural feedback to every movement of the accelerator pedal. 

The car’s soundtrack was developed as part of a collaboration between the BMW Group and film score composer Hans Zimmer. Different versions of the model-specific drive sound are created depending on the mode selected with the Driving Experience Control switch. Pressing the start/stop button additionally triggers an inspiring acoustic tone that signals the car is ready to drive.

Innovative functions for fully electric driving and user-friendly charging with the BMW X5 xDrive50e. 

The BMW Charging range of services has now also been integrated into the My BMW App. For example, the user can now control charging of the car’s high-voltage battery remotely by smartphone. Mobile reception for both data and phone calls is significantly improved by the vehicle’s own 5G antenna system. Furthermore, the Personal eSIM is not linked to just one car, but the user’s BMW ID – meaning it can be transferred to other BMW vehicles with Personal eSIM functionality. The Personal eSIM also creates a WiFi hotspot in for use by up to ten devices at any one time.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 10, 2020…Today, BMW proudly launches the 2^nd generation plug-in hybrid X5 Sports Activity Vehicle, the newest addition to the U.S. X5 lineup. The U.S. X5 xDrive45e arrives with a SULEV Super ultra-low emissions vehicle rating which can bring additional benefits in states which offer special consideration to drivers of electrified vehicles, such as high occupancy lane access stickers.

The X5 xDrive45e is built at Plant Spartanburg, South Carolina, BMW Group’s largest global production plant. In 2019, the high-voltage battery assembly area at Plant Spartanburg doubled in size in preparation for the new X3 xDrive30e and X5 xDrive45e. 120 people currently work on the battery assembly line.

The new x5 xDrive45e greatly enhances performance over the previous X5 xDrive40e with a 3.0 liter 6-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged internal combustion engine (replacing the previous generation’s 2.0 liter 4-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged motor) BMW’s latest eDrive technology and a larger, more advanced high-voltage electric battery.

The combined power of the new PHEV drivetrain is 389 hp, a bump of 81 hp over the previous generation. Torque is now 443 ft-lb, an increase of 111 ft-lbs. 0 to 60 mph acceleration time is 5.3 seconds, 1.2 seconds faster than before. The prodigious amount of torque also allows for a factory-installed optional trailer hitch (rated for 7,200 lbs. of towing).

The high-voltage battery grows in size to 24 kWh, up from the previous X5 xDrive40e’s 12 kWh capacity. As a result, electric-only range doubles from a previous EPA rating of 14 miles to a new EPA estimated 30-mile range. Electric-only top speed increases from 75 mph to 84 mph. The high-voltage battery is positioned in the underbody of the X5, minimizing impact on cargo space. With the rear seats up, cargo space is only 0.8 cubic feet less than the standard X5. With the rear seats folded, cargo space is 1.1 cubic feet less.

Drive Modes

The X5 xDrive45e features three drive modes:

Hybrid – the default mode upon start up. This fully automatic setting allows the advanced electronics to determine the most efficient or performance-oriented combined use of gasoline and electric power based on driver input.  Electric-only driving may be experienced at speeds up to 68 mph in this mode.

Electric – This electric only mode can be used at speeds up to 84 mph. The driver can change back to hybrid mode by either pushing the throttle pedal through the kick-down position or via the eDrive button on the center console.

Sport – This keeps the combustion engine engaged for particularly sporty driving and allows for more aggressive energy regeneration from engine and mechanical braking.

Intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive and Sport Steptronic transmission

The BMW intelligent xDrive system offers a rear-biased setup to enhance both spirited performance driving and all-season traction on differing road surfaces, from dry to slippery. 

The standard eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s intelligent connectivity enables it to adapt its shift strategy according to the route and driving situation by working with the navigation system and if equipped, combining this data with information from the Active Cruise Control system’s radar sensor. This makes it possible for the transmission to shift proactively instead of reactively insuring that the vehicle is always in the correct gear for the upcoming road conditions.

Suspension

A double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension give the new BMW X5 xDrive45e agile yet comfortable road handling plus enhanced traction off the beaten track. The standard Dynamic Damper Control system uses electronically controlled shock absorbers to sharpen the X5’s handling dynamics at the same time as increasing ride and suspension comfort. The driver can select from the two performance settings – Hybrid or Sport – using the Driving Experience Control switch.

The standard two-axle air suspension offers individual control for each corner using an electrically driven compressor with pressure reservoir, making it possible to balance out an unevenly loaded car. Thanks to the linkup with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the vehicle load registered by the air suspension’s sensors can also be factored into braking modulation. The X5’s ride height can be changed among five selectable levels at the touch of a button. The driver is also able to adjust the body’s ground clearance for off-road driving to a maximum of 1.6 inches above the standard setting. Another button lowers the car’s height by 1.6 inches to make loading and unloading of the vehicle easier.

Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7 and new BMW Maps

The standard Live Cockpit Professional in the BMW X5 xDrive45e brings the latest-generation of BMW’s iDrive interface and is composed of a high-resolution digital 12.3” instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 12.3” touchscreen center display. The system offers haptic controls for the iDrive controller, an advanced tablet-like touch interface, stunning visualizations and the largest displays in BMW’s vehicle lineup.

iDrive 7 in the X5 xDrive45e includes standard navigation with new BMW Maps, a digital cloud-based feature which offers faster route calculations and dynamic recalculation based on precise real-time traffic data. The route is worked out using an anticipatory approach, meaning upcoming traffic along the entire route is factored into the calculation of the expected arrival time. Complete traffic data is now available for less-traveled roads, too. Hazard warnings transmitted online from the BMW fleet now reach the car even faster thanks to connected navigation. These improvements help to produce a very accurate estimate of arrival time and improved route guidance.  The destination input function has also been improved and now lets the driver enter any word. Alternatively, the destination can be entered at any time simply by voice control. Plus, points of interest (POIs) along the route are described in greater detail, with reviews, opening times and photos.

Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are two USB-C ports, plus Bluetooth interfaces. The vehicle can automatically detect the driver and his/her personal settings by either using the traditional vehicle key or by downloading the driver’s personal settings in the BMW Cloud. Drivers can enjoy the full benefits of the car’s intelligent connectivity capabilities through vehicle apps such as news, weather, office and online search.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Compatibility

The new 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e offers standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Google Assistant, Google Maps, music streaming services like Spotify and Amazon Music and the WhatsApp messaging service are now available to both iPhone and Android users.

Driver Assistance Systems

The 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e is available with a wide variety of standard and optional driver assistance systems. The systems relieve strains on the driver in monotonous situations, such as traffic jams, or when driving long distances. The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, warn of potential hazards and minimize the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs.

The standard Active Driving Assistant on the new BMW X5 xDrive45e includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Frontal Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation (which now also alerts the driver if cyclists are detected) Cross Traffic Alert Rear and Speed Limit Information.

The optional Driving Assistance Professional Package offers comprehensive assistance for comfortable and safe driving. This package includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. It can be used at speeds up to 130 mph and maintains the desired speed while taking the traffic situation into account and the selected distance to vehicles in front. If required, the system is able to brake, stop the car and pull away again automatically after being stationary for up to 30 seconds, meaning greater comfort in stop-start traffic. Camera images and data from a front radar system are used for distance control.

Another component of the Driving Assistance Professional Package is the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection. This system is designed to help the driver guide the vehicle back on to the correct path with an active turn of the steering wheel. Besides emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to vibrate, Active Side Collision Protection also uses active steering intervention to help avoid a collision. Moreover, this package includes Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways, which allows for even more relaxed driving at speeds lower than 40 mph during highly congested highway traffic situations. The Driving Assistance Professional Package includes Evasion Aid, which now also reacts to pedestrians, and Front Cross Traffic Alert – which reduces the danger of a collision when maneuvering toward roads that are obstructed from the driver’s view.

The drive recorder, a new feature on the optional Parking Assistance Package, uses the cameras of the various driver assistance systems to record video footage from the front and/or rear view points of the vehicle before storing the recordings. The saved video files can be either watched later on the center control display when the car is stationary or exported via the USB port. When activated, the drive recorder shoots and stores up to 40 seconds of video. In the event of a collision, a period of up to 20 seconds around the moment of impact is automatically recorded and saved.

Spartanburg, SC – July 24 2019… BMW Group Plant Spartanburg has more than doubled its capacity for battery assembly prior to the debuts of the plug-in hybrid electric variants of two of its most popular models.  The new, higher performing, fourth-generation batteries will be assembled on-site for the BMW X5 and BMW X3 plug-in hybrid electric variants.  The 2020 BMW X5 xDrive45e Sports Activity Vehicle will begin production in Spartanburg, SC, on August 1. Production of the BMW X3 xDrive30e will begin in December.    

With the expansion of the battery facility at Plant Spartanburg in the U.S., the BMW Group is following the principle of local value creation. “We have invested approximately $10 million USD to install a new battery assembly line and expanded the area to 86,000 square feet. This means we could double the number of batteries produced if needed to meet market demand,” explains Michael Nikolaides, senior vice president engines and electrified drivetrains, BMW Group. 

In addition, BMW Group has invested a further $10 million USD to support the production of the new PHEV models. 

More than 120 employees were specially trained to work the new line, having completed an extensive program in battery production, robotics and electrical inline quality inspection along with end-of-line testing.  An additional 225 vehicle assembly workers received training in the production of electrified vehicles, adding to the Plant’s already skilled staff.

 “We have assembled batteries on site at Plant Spartanburg since 2015, making BMW Group a pioneer of electromobility in the U.S.,” said Knudt Flor, president and CEO, BMW Manufacturing, Co, LLC. “The BMW X5 and X3 are currently among the best-selling BMW models in the U.S. and we anticipate that their PHEV variants will also be well-received by BMW customers.”

From 2015 – 2018, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg produced the X5 xDrive40e, the first plug-in hybrid production car from the BMW core brand.  All totaled, the plant’s battery assembly team assembled more than 45,000 batteries during this four-year period.

  Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 22, 2019…Today, BMW introduces two new M Performance models, the BMW X5 M50i and BMW X7 M50i, which join the X5 and X7 lineups this fall when production begins in BMW Plant Spartanburg, SC. 

   

  Both models feature the new top version of the N63 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V8 engine backed by an eight-speed sport automatic transmission, BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive , M Sport differential, M Sport exhaust system and model-specific M GmbH suspension tuning.

   

  Offering true sports car performance, both BMW Sports Activity Vehicles offer excellent handling and traction across varied surfaces and weather conditions complemented by luxurious interior appointments and the same towing capabilities as their non-M Performance siblings.

  Power and performance

   

  The latest generation of the 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine features numerous detailed improvements. Two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling located within the V-shaped space between the cylinder banks, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing all form part of the M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology package which delivers 523 hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque between 1,800 – 4,600 rpm. - an increase of 67 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque over the X5 xDrive50i and X7 xDrive50i models.

   

  A new aluminium alloy has been used to increase the strength of the engine block. The wire-arc sprayed iron coating for the cylinder walls serves to reduce frictional losses. Reinforced, Grafal-coated pistons and optimized piston rings are designed to endure the stress on the crank drive that comes with the extra output and torque. To enhance engine smoothness, torsional vibration is minimized with the help of a viscous damper on the crankshaft.

   

  The BMW X5 M50i accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds with the larger X7 M50i right behind at 4.5 seconds. Both vehicles feature electronically limited top speeds of 130 mph when equipped with all-season tires and 155 mph when equipped with summer performance tires.

   

  Eight-speed Sport Automatic transmission

   

   

  The eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s new control electronics help to increase the powertrain’s overall performance and efficiency. Intelligent connectivity enables the Sport automatic transmission to adapt its shift strategy according to the route and driving situation by working with the navigation system and if equipped, combining this data with information from the Active Cruise Control system’s radar sensor. This makes it possible for the transmission to shift proactively instead of reactively insuring that the vehicle is always in the correct gear for the upcoming road conditions.

   

  Shift paddles on the steering wheel allow for quick manual gear selection, while a Launch Control function allows for accelerating from a standing start with maximum available traction.

   

  xDrive all-wheel drive with M Sport rear differential.

   

  BMW’s rear-biased xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, found in the X5 M50i and X7 M50i, is able to split drive-torque between the front and rear wheels with great speed and precision. Full power can be directed automatically by the system to the rear wheels in situations where all-wheel drive traction is not required.

   

  The standard electronically controlled rear M Sport differential helps support dynamic driving by optimizing the transfer of power to the road in all driving situations. Managed by the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function for the rear differential improves traction and power delivery when driving over road surfaces with differing levels of grip for the left-rear and right-rear wheels by reducing wheel spin when a specific tire is struggling for traction.

   

  Chassis and Suspension

   

  The BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i models feature a double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension that has been painstakingly gone over by M GmbH. This setup provides the best balance of exceptional traction on rough terrain and excellent dynamic response and ride comfort on pavement. The bushings, spring and damper settings have all been tuned to complement the new models’ increased power and performance.

   

  The BMW X5 M50i is equipped with the Adaptive M Suspension while the BMW X7 M50i is equipped with a two-axle air suspension system (optional on the X5 M50i) which allows for a 0.8 inch lowering of ride height when in Sport mode or when speeds exceed 85 mph. The driver may also increase vehicle ride height of air suspension equipped vehicles by 1.6” for greater ground clearance when required.

   

  Wheels, Tires and Brakes

   

  Both models are equipped with large M Sport Brakes featuring two-piece, lightweight compound brake disks with blue painted calipers and M logos.

   

  The BMW X5 M50i is equipped with standard 20 inch M Star-spoke, bi-color, light alloy wheels shod with 275/45R20 all-season run-flat tires. Optional wheel and tire packages include 21 inch wheels with 275/40R21 front and 315/35R21 performance run-flat tires and 22 inch wheels with 275/35R22 front and 315/30R22 rear performance non run-flat tires.

   

  The BMW X7 M50i comes equipped with standard 22 inch cerium grey M V-spoke light alloy wheels with 275/40R22 front and 315/35R22 performance run-flat tires. Options include bi-color orbit grey or black 22 inch wheels and 21 inch wheels mounted with 285/45R21 all-season run-flat tires.

     

  M Performance design and features

   

  The new BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i models feature front bumpers with larger openings to allow for greater air flow to the cooling system. The rocker panels and rear bumpers have been sculptured to set the models apart from the rest of the line. BMW Individual high-gloss Shadowline trim and Cerium Grey highlight selected individual exterior components.

  BMW Live Cockpit Professional: Seventh generation of BMW iDrive

   

  The BMW Live Cockpit Professional combines a new display and control concept and the ultimate in connectivity to create a superb all-round package. The latest-generation of the iDrive comprises a high-resolution digital 12.3” instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 12.3” center display diagonally across. The system offers many hardware upgrades including new haptic controls on the iDrive controller, an advanced tablet-like touch interface, stunning visualizations, and the largest displays available in a BMW. The multi-modal approach of the iDrive touch controller, large touchscreen center display, cloud based voice control, and gesture control allow users to interact in the way of their choosing.  

   

  The seventh incarnation of iDrive has a cutting-edge, fully-digital design and is geared more closely to the driver’s needs by allowing them to tailor the system to their own preferences with customizable widgets of information. This new level of personalization is then stored in the BMW cloud and can follow the customer to other BMW vehicles. Information from categories such as driving, entertainment, navigation, connectivity, and from the vehicle info itself, can be selected in nearly any combination in any of four layouts on the Center Display. Multiple pages can be created and easily accessed with a simple swipe across the screen with a finger.

   

  Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the Navigation Professional system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system with 32 GB of memory and six USB ports, plus Bluetooth interfaces. The driver can be automatically detected and personal settings activated either using the traditional vehicle key or by downloading the driver’s personal settings from the BMW Cloud.

   

  A collection of bundled digital services will be offered as the Connected Package Professional. The Connected Package Professional provides Remote Services, Concierge Services, On-Street Parking Information, and Real Time Traffic Information for the first 4 years of ownership. This package allows easy integration and adaptation of new technology over time. Munich. Like its predecessors and indeed the entire BMW X model family, the fourth generation of the BMW X5 (combined fuel consumption 11.6-6.0 l/100 km; combined CO₂emissions: 264–158 g/km; provisional figures*) combines impressive off-road performance with outstanding driving dynamics quality on the road. With an extensive range of M Performance Parts for the new premium SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), BMW now in particular addresses those customers who wish to selectively refine the vehicle's sporty character and give this aspect further emphasise the character. The M Performance Parts available through the Original BMW Accessories programme will be available right on time for the worldwide market launch of the BMW X5 in March 2019.

Development of the full range of M Performance Parts has always drawn on the extensive motor racing expertise of BMW M GmbH. All components are perfectly matched – both with each other and with the specific properties of each model. In this way, they not only give the vehicle concerned a more striking, dynamic appearance but also serve a functional purpose. The features have a positive impact on the vehicle’s aerodynamic properties, for instance, or contribute additionally to the intelligent lightweight concept. 

The numerous exterior components in carbon fibre make for a more pronounced appearance. 
The M Performance exterior components in carbon fibre are especially effective in creating a particularly striking look in the BMW X5 that is clearly inspired by motor racing. They are all characterised by the honeycomb structure that is so typical of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. Finished by hand and sealed with a clear finish, the components are given a final high-gloss polish for an impressive depth effect. For example, the air intake trim element for the standard bumper and the front winglets not only visually enhance the front section, they also highlight the breadth of the SAV model. At the rear, the same applies to the rear winglets and the rear diffuser. The range of M exterior components in carbon fibre is rounded off with exterior mirror caps.

Finally, M Performance side sill foils in black matt are available for further enhancement of the vehicle’s sporty external look. They run from the front to the rear wheel arch along the entire lower sill and are branded with the M Performance inscription. 

All-terrain wheels available from BMW as M Performance Parts for the first time.

For customers who prefer to highlight and make use of the off-road capabilities of their BMW X5, the 20'' M light alloy wheel Star Spoke 748 M with all-terrain tyres is now available for the fourth generation of the BMW X5. The colour BMW M logo is especially eye-catching due to the fact that the rim is finished in sporty matt black. The specific rim design combined with the striking tread design of the all-terrain tyre reflects both robustness and stability. This new wheel/tyre combination also offers good rid comfort and is approved for use in winter.

Optional 22-inch tyres are also available for customers, that include a set of wheels from the M Performance Parts range. The 22" M Performance light alloy wheel Start Spoke 749 M with rolled rim well (flow forming) is about one kilogram lighter than a comparable wheel of the same size due to the special manufacturing technique used. All in all, the unsprung masses are reduced by approx. four kilograms as a result, which impacts positively on driving dynamics and turn-in response. 

Weight-optimised design also characterises the M Performance sports brake: the 4-piston fixed calipers on the front axle are made of aluminium, for example. Meanwhile the inner-vented and perforated M Performance brake discs – which are larger than in the serial brakes (19 inches) – ensure improved thermal resilience and therefore an increased braking effect even in extreme conditions. The brake calipers finished in red visually highlight the M Performance sports brake – and especially striking feature in conjunction with wheels that have an open rim design such as the M Performance light alloy wheel Star Spoke 749 M.

Carbon fibre look and motor racing functionality on the inside, too.
A wide selection of M Performance components derived from and inspired by motor racing is also available for the interior of the new BMW X5, once again providing both visual and functional enhancement. The M Performance steering wheel ensures the driver has secure control over the dynamic SAV at all times, for example. This is due to the extremely high-grip Alcantara handling area with large thumbrests and special underlining for excellent stability and a direct steering feel. In addition to standard details such as the red centre marking at the 12 o’clock position and the silver-grey, hand-sewn cross-stitch, the M Performance steering wheel is also available with M Performance steering wheel trim in carbon fibre with M Performance inscription and Alcantara insert. To match this, the shift paddles can also be selected in an M Performance finish featuring carbon fabric instead of the standard chrome surface.

It is also possible to give the driver’s workplace a motor racing look and feel in areas that are outside the direct field of vision in the new BMW X5. Contributing factors here are the M Performance floor mats with M Performance inscription, a pennant in the typical M colours and a surround in leather look including decorative seam in contrasting colours, as well as pedal pads and footrest in stainless steel. The asymmetrical profiles of the latter underscore the striking motor racing look.

Drive Analyser for comprehensive driving style analysis.
The M Performance Drive Analyser is available to those wanting to achieve motor racing optimisation not just in the BMW X5 itself but also in terms of their own driving style. It consists of an OBD stick, which is plugged into the on-board diagnosis socket, and a smartphone app. The Drive Analyser is derived directly from motor racing: it provides the driver with all the main driving dynamics data, offering extensive and professional logging and analysis options. It also enables trip recording on a smartphone video camera, driving data logging and route tracking based on GPS position data.

A love of motor racing in general and M Performance products in particular can also be expressed by means of features that are not directly connected with the driving experience in the new BMW X5 itself. The M Performance slide set for the BMW LED door projectors enables the BMW M logo or other motifs relating to M Performance to be projected onto the asphalt when getting in and out of the car, for example. The M Performance key wallet made of high-quality Alcantara with carbon fibre insert can by firmly attached to the vehicle key by means of a hexagon socket screw in M light blue, thereby protecting it from scratches and damage. The same combination of looks and function is provided by the M Performance tyre bags made of high-quality and highly resilient plastic: these protect the wheels from soiling during transport and storage.

Munich. Efficiency meets supremacy: the drive portfolio of the new BMW X5 is to be extended in the course of 2019 with the addition of a plug-in hybrid system. The new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance combines a model-specific in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the very latest BMW eDrive technology. Consistent progress in the area of plug-hybrid drive has produced a system output now increased to 290 kW/394 hp, a tangible enhancement in terms of electrically powered range and a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ levels as compared to the predecessor model.

More impressively than ever, the second generation of the plug-in hybrid model combines the purely electrically powered driving pleasure of a BMW iPerformance automobile with the versatility that is typical of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). In doing so, the new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance offers optimised qualities in terms of both driving dynamics and efficiency. It does the sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds – more than one second less than the predecessor model. The top speed when driving on electric power alone is increased from 120 to 140 km/h. Its electrically powered range is now approximately 80 kilometres*, almost three times that of its predecessor. The combined fuel consumption of the new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance drops to 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres*, while the relevant CO₂ emissions figure is now 49 grams per kilometre*.

These improved levels are the result of a completely newly developed drive technology. It comprises a 3.0-litre and 210 kW/286 hp in-line 6-cylinder engine from the current BMW EfficientDynamics drive family and the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology. An electrical system output of 82 kW/112 hp, a lithium-ion battery with extended storage capacity and further developed power electronics for intelligent energy management give the plug-in hybrid system of the BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance unique performance characteristics as well as an impressive level of efficiency. Together, the two drive units generate a system output of 290 kW/394 hp along with a maximum system torque of 600 Nm. The combustion engine and electric motor deliver their power to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission of the latest generation and the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. In this way, the drive torque is transferred to all four wheels when driving on electric power alone as well as when using the combustion engine or indeed both drive units: this ensures sporty driving pleasure on the road and supreme off-road performance over loose terrain at all times. The top speed of the BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is 235 km/h.

Thanks to the high-voltage battery positioned in the underbody area of the vehicle, the centre of gravity is lower than in conventionally powered SAV model variants. The luggage compartment volume of the BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is only some 150 litres less. When all seats are used, the storage volume is 500 litres; if the rear backrests are folded down, a volume of 1 716 litres is available. The volume of the fuel tank is 69 litres – suitable for long distances.

The new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is fitted as standard with a two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers. The optional suspension systems available for the plug-in hybrid model include integral active steering. In addition to a comprehensive selection of features in the area of intelligent connectivity, new digital services are also offered that are geared specifically towards electromobility. In addition, all driver assistance systems developed for the Sports Activity Vehicle as well as high-quality options to enhance comfort and luxurious interior ambience are also available for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance.
