featured alongside a number of electrified BMW vehicles. English- and
German-speaking BMW representatives will be available for interviews
throughout press days on Monday, January 15 and Tuesday, January 16 at
the BMW Stand.

The all-new BMW X2 is the latest addition to the BMW
X family. The first-ever BMW X2 has a distinctive exterior design that
combines the fast-moving body language and low-slung proportions of a
coupe with the robust construction of a BMW X model. The cutting-edge
2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine together with the
8-speed automatic transmission propel this emotional sports activity
coupe from 0-60 mph in just 6.3 seconds, yielding 228 hp and a peak
torque of 258 lb-ft. The BMW X2 will arrive in dealerships in spring
2018. Pricing will be announced closer to market launch. BMW

The 2019 BMW i8 Coupe also makes its world debut at
the North American International Auto Show. The enhanced hybrid 2+2
seater has increased power and range over its predecessor and has been
the world’s best-selling hybrid sports car since 2014. Using optimized
BMW eDrive technology, and with hybrid-specific all-wheel drive,
combustion engine driving the rear wheels and the electric motor
driving the front wheels, the BMW i8 Coupe achieves 369 hp (12 hp more
than its predecessor), a peak torque of 184 lb-ft, and accelerates
from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds (preliminary) with a top speed of
155 mph. The lithium-ion battery, located centrally in the car’s
underbody, and its cell capacity has been increased from 20 to 34 Ah
and a gross energy capacity from 7.1 to 11.6 kilowatt hours. Also
showcased alongside the all-new BMW i8 Coupe will be the BMW
i8 Roadster, which made its world debut at the Los Angeles
Auto Show in November 2017. The BMW i8 Roadster takes the BMW i8’s
combination of locally emission-free mobility and high-caliber
performance and adds a top-down driving experience. The BMW i8
Roadster features a retractable, all-season fabric soft-top which can
open and close in less than 16 seconds and while the vehicle is in
motion at up to 31 mph. The two-seat BMW i8 Roadster stows its
soft-top in the perpendicular position in the rear of the vehicle when
opened and takes up very little space, maximizing storage capacity.
The new BMW i8 Coupe and BMW i8 Roadster will be available in spring
2018. Pricing will be announced closer to market launch. BMW

The new BMW i3s is a sportier and more powerful
variant of the BMW i3, the best-selling compact battery-electric
vehicle in the premium compact segment worldwide since it launched in
2014. The first ever BMW i3s provides an even sportier interpretation
of silent mobility with zero emissions and features a high output 184
hp electric motor that generates peak torque of 199 lb-ft. The BMW i3s
accelerates from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds and has a top speed of 100
mph. The BMW i3s uses a lithium-ion high-voltage battery developed by
the BMW Group with a cell capacity of 94-ampere hours (Ah). Like the
BMW i3, the BMW i3s applies the concept of sustainability throughout
the interior and exterior of the vehicle, incorporating recycled
plastics, renewable raw materials, natural fibers, and open-pored,
unbleached eucalyptus wood in the design. BMW

The BMW X7 iPerformance Concept introduces a new
model concept for the premium segment that utilizes BMW eDrive
technology with a BMW TwinPower Turbo engine creating an exceptionally
efficient and dynamic plug-in hybrid powertrain that excels in all
driving situations, including running with zero local emissions. With
a generously-sized, six-person interior, the BMW X7 iPerformance
Concept offers an interior with a state-of-the-art infotainment system
brimming with connectivity that provide an unmatched experience by any
BMW past or present. As a result of the interplay between precise,
pared-down forms and an open sense of space, the driver and passengers
are immersed in a unique, modern setting. The production model of the
BMW X7 will debut in 2018. BMW

The first-ever BMW M3 CS made its world debut at the
Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2017. It is a special-edition model
and delivers a blend of high performance and complete everyday
practicality. The extensive use of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic has
kept the BMW M3 CS extremely light and lowered the overall weight by
approximately 110 pounds less than a standard BMW M3. The M TwinPower
Turbo technology 6-cylinder inline engine produces 453 hp generating a
peak torque of 443 lb-ft and accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 3.7
seconds, making it the quickest BMW M3 to date. The BMW M3 CS will be
available to order in the U.S. starting in May 2018. Pricing will be
announced closer to market launch. BMW

The BMW M5 has been regarded as the quintessential
high performance sports sedan since its initial iteration launched in
1984. The 2018 BMW M5 marks the debut of the first ever M-specific
all-wheel drive system, M xDrive, which allows the BMW M5 to reach new
heights of dynamic performance and delivers poise in all driving
situations. Thanks to a 4.4-liter V8 engine featuring M TwinPower
Turbo technology, the BMW M5 produces 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of peak
torque, skyrocketing from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, making it
the quickest and most agile to date. The 2018 BMW M5 will be available
with a MSRP of $102,600 plus $995 Destination and Handling, appearing
in U.S. showrooms in spring 2018. BMW

The 2018 BMW X3 is the third generation of the
pioneering premium compact Sports Activity Vehicle. The dynamic
handling qualities of the BMW X3 are linked to its ideal 50:50 weight
distribution between the front and rear axles, its meticulously honed
chassis, and xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system which
debuted in 2003 in the first generation of the BMW X3. The BMW X3 uses
a 2.0 liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder inline gasoline engine and an
8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission yielding 248 hp and a
maximum torque of 258 lb-ft, accelerating from 0-60 in 6.0 seconds
with a top speed of 130 mph. The BMW X3 is available in U.S. showrooms
with a MSRP of $42,450 plus $995 Destination and Handling. BMW

Woodcliff Lake, NJ –
November 7, 2017 6:01 pm EST / 3:01 pm PST … Today,
BMW announced the first-ever BMW M3 CS, a special-edition model that
delivers a fine blend of high performance and complete everyday
practicality. The engineers at BMW M GmbH have succeeded in
intensifying the dynamic, emotion-packed character of the BMW M3 with
a carefully crafted ensemble of modifications. The extensive use of
carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), has kept the first-ever BMW M3
CS extremely light. Large sections of the body are also made from
CFRP, including the hood, which is around 25 percent lighter than that
of the regular BMW M3. The CFRP roof alone is more than 13 pounds
lighter than a conventional steel version. These changes effectively
lower the car’s center of gravity, which endows the BMW M3 CS with
even better agile handling. The back of the vehicle features a
redesigned “Gurney Flap” in exposed carbon fiber. This aerodynamic
spoiler lip running across the trailing edge of the trunk lid
significantly reduces rear-axle lift. In the interests of everyday
practicality, the M3 CS forgoes a roll cage.

The excellent dynamics of the first-ever BMW M3 CS are rooted not
only in unique suspension set-up (in terms of spring/damper settings),
but also in a moderate increase in power for the M TwinPower Turbo
technology 6-cylinder inline engine. Fitted in the M3 CS it develops
453 hp at 6250 rpm (+28 hp) and peak torque 443 lb-ft from 4000 to
5380 rpm (+37 lb-ft). The unmistakable roar of the twin turbo engine
is enhanced by the M sports exhaust system that has been specially
tuned for the CS and whose quartet of stainless-steel tailpipes blend
perfectly into the CFRP rear diffuser.

Generous use of Alcantara and the two-tone full Merino leather in
Silverstone/Black endow an enviably sporting feel. The engine in the
first-ever BMW M3 CS is fired up with the push of a new red start/stop
button. Paring down the passenger compartment to the essentials and,
in so doing, achieving significant weight savings is also expressed in
the presence of lightweight M sports seats. Its passengers need not go
without niceties such as automatic climate control and a high-quality,
specially adapted version of the Harman Kardon surround sound system.

Orders for the first-ever 2018 BMW M3 CS can be placed starting May,
2018. Production of the high-performance sedan will be limited to
approximately 1,200 units worldwide, with approximately 550 units
coming to the U.S. Pricing will be announced closer to market launch.

High-revving concept and TwinPower Turbo Technology deliver
even higher performance.

The inline 6-cylinder engine has a long tradition at BMW, and in the
first-ever BMW M3 CS it is once again responsible for delivering top
performance. Compared to the standard M3, maximum output has been
increased by 28 horsepower to 453 hp, which is on tap at 6,250 rpm.
Peak torque of 443 lb-ft is around 10 percent higher (M3, 406 lb-ft)
and can be summoned over a wide rev range – from 4,000 rpm up to 5,380
rpm. The result, 0 to 60 mph sprint takes just 3.7 seconds, while the
top speed of the BMW M3 CS, which comes with the M Driver’s Package as
standard, is electronically limited to 174 mph.

The high power output of the 3.0-liter engine can be attributed to
its free-revving design of the M TwinPower Turbo technology utilizing
two mono-scroll turbochargers, which combined with High Precision
Direct Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve lift and Double-VANOS
fully variable camshaft timing control ensure the 6-cylinder unit
delivers its power to maximum effect. Boost pressure is built up
continuously from just above idling speed, while the fully variable
valve and camshaft timing help to maintain high efficiency. As a
result, the inline 6-cylinder under the hood has a high rated maximum
engine speed for a twin-turbocharged unit (7,600 rpm).

The closed-deck design of the 6-cylinder engine’s crankcase ensures
it is remarkably rigid, paving the way for high cylinder pressures and
very effective power output. The sleeveless cylinder walls, with their
twin-wire, arc-sprayed coating, help to save weight. Another feature
designed for top performance is the forged crankshaft boasting a
lightweight design yet also high torsional strength. This keeps the
rotating mass low and gives the twin-turbo power unit even quicker
throttle response.

The engine’s oil supply system is another technical highlight,
showcasing the vast motorsport expertise of BMW M GmbH. It has been
designed with the tough demands of track competition in mind and
ensures that the engine is kept supplied with lubricant under
longitudinal and lateral forces of up to 1.4 g. The lightweight
magnesium oil sump is fitted with an additional cover to limit the
lubricant’s surging movements, even in extreme driving maneuvers such
as the ones experienced on a race track. An extra oil suction pump
combined with a highly effective oil return system ensure a constant
oil supply.

The first-ever M3 CS features a dual-branch sports exhaust with the
characteristic four tailpipes at the back neatly incorporated into the
styling of the rear diffuser. The exhaust back-pressure is as low as
possible, helping to enhance power, and it is governed by a system of
flaps. Positioned directly upstream from the rear silencers, the flaps
are controlled electrically and are designed to provide optimum
feedback on the engine’s load state throughout the rev range as well
as generate that unmistakable, sporty M sound. The driver can alter
the way the system of flaps works by preselecting a driving mode. The
tailpipes are made from stainless steel and bear the M logo.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels of the first-ever BMW M3 CS
via the proven 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) with
Drivelogic. Extremely fast gear changes mean there is no interruption
in power flow, while the M Launch Control function ensures flawless
acceleration from a standing start. The M DCT unit operates fully
automatically, but there are also shift paddles on the steering wheel
should manual gear changes be the order of the day. To help cope with
even the most demanding operating conditions, the 7-speed transmission
comes with a dedicated oil cooler.

Driving dynamics perfected on the race track: M-precision and agility.

Cars created by BMW M GmbH have always stood out by virtue of their
agility, steering precision and handling stability. The first-ever BMW
M3 CS upholds this tradition, while also catering to the sports-minded
driver with a variety of set-up options for the suspension, the M
Servotronic electromechanical steering, the DSC stability control
system and the 7-speed M Double-Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic.

The first-ever BMW M3 CS is fitted as standard with Adaptive M
Suspension, offering the driver the choice between Comfort, Sport and
Sport+ modes, including different damper settings in each of the three
modes. Three different settings for the precise electromechanical
steering of the M3 CS can also be selected at the touch of a button.

The high-tech chassis technology for the first-ever BMW M3 CS also
includes the Active M Differential. This limited-slip differential’s
electronically controlled multi-disc locking action further enhances
the car’s already outstanding traction and stability. The control unit
communicates with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system,
factoring in the accelerator position, rotational wheel speeds, yaw
rate, and adapting to the changing driving situation with extreme
precision to ensure the maximum amount of torque is distributed to the
rear wheels.

DSC normally counters understeer or oversteer by means of targeted
intervention in the engine and brake control systems. In the case of
the M3 CS, engaging M Dynamic Mode (MDM) allows a greater degree of
wheel slip, making it possible to perform mild drifts. This is the
sort of maneuver drivers seeking particularly sporty and dynamic
responses will enjoy.

The special edition BMW M3 CS’s chassis is largely the same as that
of the BMW M3 with Competition Package, but it also includes exclusive
modifications for the special-edition model to give an even sportier
set-up. Notable features include its low weight and the extraordinary
rigidity of the axle systems. There is a lightweight double-joint
spring strut axle at the front and a five-link axle at the rear. The
links and wheel carriers are all made from forged aluminum.

The rear differential’s double-elastic suspension and the rear axle
subframe’s rigid bolted connection with the body structure both
demonstrate how thoroughbred motorsport technology has been engrained
into the road car.

The limited-run BMW M3 CS special-edition model is fitted with forged
light-alloy wheels in Orbit Grey Matt as standard. Their ten-spoke
design takes its cue from the wheels of the successful M4 cars
competing in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) race series.
The BMW M GmbH engineers have rigorously applied their lightweight
design approach to the wheels as well. The 10 J x 20-inch wheels at
the rear weigh just over 22 pounds each and their 9 J x 19-inch
counterparts at the front a mere 19 pounds. That keeps the unsprung
masses low, which is another factor in the exceptionally dynamic
handling of the M3 CS. The M3 CS rides as standard on mixed-size
Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (265/35 R 19 at the front and 285/30
R 20 at the rear).

Like the M3, the first-ever M3 CS comes with BMW M compound brakes as
standard. Fixed 4-piston calipers at the front and fixed 2-piston
units at the rear are employed to deliver outstanding stopping power
and high fade resistance. Compound brakes are far lighter than
conventional equivalents, meaning a further reduction in unsprung
masses and therefore even sharper handling. The BMW M3 CS is
optionally available with BMW M Carbon Ceramic brakes. These brakes
feature fixed 6-piston calipers at the front and 4-piston calipers at
the rear, are even lighter, can withstand the sort of extreme loads
experienced in race action on a track and are even more durable.

Expressive design: Punchy use of forms and intelligent
lightweight engineering.

The first-ever BMW M3 CS special-edition model leaves no doubt as to
its performance capabilities with its looks alone. No matter which
angle the M3 CS is viewed from, it appears as if cut from a single
mold, has a muscular, athletic look and makes it perfectly clear it is
a high-performance sports car. In other words, the M3 CS is another
uncompromising expression of the BMW M design language that sets out
to communicate its exceptional performance and exhibit all of its
emotionally rich, intensely dynamic character.

The front end, with its pronounced three-dimensional contouring,
radiates sportiness from every angle. Distinguishing features include
the twin headlight units with their state-of-the-art LED technology
and the slender kidney grille. The front apron is divided into three
parts and highlights the dynamic nature of the first-ever BMW M3 CS
even more vividly, at the same time as performing its technical
functions. The large air intakes provide highly efficient cooling for
both the twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine and the powerful braking system.
The front splitter is made from lightweight exposed carbon fiber and
reduces lift at the front axle to great effect. Carbon
fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) has also been used for the restyled
“Gurney Flap” at the rear, effectively reducing rear axle lift. The
CFRP rear diffuser is carried over from the BMW M4 GTS. It adds a
visually stunning and sporty flourish to the rear end and seamlessly
incorporates the four stainless-steel tailpipes of the dual-branch,
CS-specific M sports exhaust system into its styling. The diffuser and
front splitter also optimize the airflow along the vehicle’s underbody
and combine with the “Gurney Flap” to keep the car in even firmer
contact with the road. The use of multiple components made from CFRP
is a further indication of BMW’s firm commitment to intelligent
lightweight engineering with the first-ever M3 CS.

The BMW M3 CS special-edition model comes with BMW Individual High
gloss Shadow Line trim and darkened rear light units. BMW M GmbH is
offering a total of five exterior colors for the high-performance
sedan. The M3 CS is painted in Alpine White as standard, while
customers may also opt for either San Marino Blue Metallic, Lime Rock
Grey Metallic, Frozen Dark Blue II Metallic or Black Sapphire Metallic.

Exclusive specification. Sportiness and comfort flowing
through every vein.

The cabin of the first-ever BMW M3 CS is awash with leather (in an
exclusive two-tone Silverstone/Black finish) and Alcantara. Both the
driver and front passenger settle into the same specially-designed
lightweight M sports seats fitted in the M3 with Competition Package.
The rear seats are likewise upholstered in Merino leather in an
exclusive two-tone Silverstone/Black combination with grey contrast
stitching. The sports seats in the first-ever BMW M3 CS guarantee
optimum lateral support, even when powering around a track, yet they
are also very comfortable on long journeys. The familiar BMW M stripes
have been incorporated into the front seat belts.

The most important accessory for drivers of the first-ever BMW M3 CS
is an M sports steering wheel. Wrapped in exclusive,
anthracite-colored Alcantara with a silver 12 o’clock marker, this
cost option provides outstanding grip in all driving situations.
Alcantara with grey contrast stitching adorns the handbrake lever.

The interior’s exclusive trim strips are covered with Alcantara and
feature prominent CS identifiers. Alcantara – a wonderfully classy yet
hard-wearing upholstery material – also graces the lightweight center
console. The door sills, meanwhile, feature special strips inscribed
with M3 CS lettering.

Despite the intensely sporty focus of the first-ever BMW M3 CS,
drivers do not have to go without comforts such as automatic climate
control. There is also a Harman Kardon surround sound system for the
ultimate in listening pleasure, while the BMW Navigation system
Professional is part of the extensive standard specification for the
first-ever BMW M3 CS.

World premiere: BMW M Performance Parts for the all-new 2018
BMW M5.

Since its world premiere in August, the all-new BMW M5 has attracted
attention around the globe. At the 2017 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, BMW is
now presenting a comprehensive range of exclusive M Performance Parts
for the all-new BMW M5. All of these components from the M Performance
Parts accessory range were developed using BMW M Motorsport know-how
and underscore the high-performance sedan’s sporty and luxurious
appearance, and also fulfil functional requirements in terms of
aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. Most of these
exclusive M Performance Parts will be available as options during the
time of ordering when the vehicle is launched in the Spring of 2018,
with additional products following in July 2018.

Aerodynamics in perfection. The numerous highlights
featured in the accessory range developed especially for the all-new
BMW M5 include the package comprising M Performance aerodynamics
components. All of these parts are made from lightweight carbon fiber
and are elaborately handcrafted.

The following aerodynamics components are available: a newly designed
front attachment, side sill attachments, a carbon fiber rear spoiler,
a carbon fiber rear spoiler Pro (**) and a rear diffuser. All of these
components accentuate the all-new BMW M5’s powerful and sporty
appearance, while ensuring optimized aerodynamic characteristics.

Additional components from the M Performance Parts accessory range
have been perfectly adapted to the aerodynamics package and now
provide additional accents to the all-new BMW M5. The front kidney
grilles and air breather trim side grilles (**) bearing the M logo and
M Performance carbon fiber mirror caps (**) further enhance the carbon
fiber look. The M Performance side sill foils accentuate the side sill
attachments, optimally rounding off the distinctively sporty look
provided by the aerodynamics package.

Latest technology from motorsport brings the BMW M5’s performance
onto the road, while guaranteeing superior driving behavior right up
to the car’s limit. Thanks to an even sportier set-up, the new BMW M
Performance coilover suspension developed specifically for the BMW M5
ensures excellent road-holding and increases driving dynamics
resulting from a more direct connection of the vehicle chassis to the
road. Moreover, red coil springs also add further visual highlights.
The spring plates are adjustable.

Carbon-ceramic brakes guarantee superior braking characteristics. The
sports disc pads are based on highly durable, motorsports-proven
racing brake pads (***) and offer advantages such as a shorter braking
distances, better brake response as well as higher thermal resilience.
Furthermore, the race-oriented interpretation of brake-force
distribution provides for enhanced dynamic brake control.

The new BMW M Performance sports exhaust system, which will be on
sale exclusively in the USA and Canada, guarantees an emotional
motorsport sound. The rear muffler is made from titanium with carbon
fiber tailpipe trims additionally available. Optimized exhaust gas
routing with reduced counter-pressure enhances the powerful V8
TwinTurbo sound and underscores the sporty driving experience.

The M Performance Drive Analyzer, also derived from motorsport, is an
innovative tool for recording and evaluating all important vehicle
dynamics data. The system offers comprehensive, professional
possibilities to record and analyze, which can be evaluated and
displayed on the smartphone. The Drive Analyzer determines a variety
of relevant indicators such as diverse engine data, speed and peak
values, engaged gear, use of accelerator pedal and brakes as well as
lateral acceleration. When established, the results can be directly
shown on the smartphone as videos or graphic representations via the M
Performance Drive Analyzer App, which is available free of charge to
BMW customers. Furthermore, customers also wishing to capture their
drive on film, BMW M Performance Parts offers the Trackfix action
camera holder, which can be mounted in the threaded bush of the towing
lug either at the front or rear end of the vehicle.

Sporty, dynamic appearance down to the finest detail.
M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 bring that true racetrack
feeling to everyday life – also in terms of visual presence. These
include motorsport stripes in typical M colors, which highlight the
car’s sporty design even further and lend it its very own individual
character. The elaborately handcrafted M Performance carbon fiber
engine cover extension kit is a real eye-catcher and also makes the
car’s racing genes visible where its performance has its origins – in
the engine compartment.

*** Not available in the US.

This racing look has also been applied to the vehicle’s interior
components. The M Performance steering wheel (**) conveys a genuine
motorsport feeling thanks to its distinctive geometry and extremely
pronounced Alcantara grip area and a carbon fiber steering wheel
cover. This is enhanced by newly designed carbon fiber shift paddles
(**) and a carbon fiber gear shift lever cover (**). M Performance
floor mats are a perfect complement to the car’s interior ambience.
Finest details from the suspension to the interior reveal that the BMW
M5 and M Performance Parts have their roots in motor racing, and this
also includes the new key wallet for the all-new BMW M5. It comprises
a material mix of high-quality Alcantara and carbon fiber and offers a
perfect combination of motorsport design and functionality. The M
Performance LED logo projector, which completes the accessory range
available for the BMW M5, is also a genuine statement.

M Performance Parts in use for the MotoGPTM.
A unique model designed for racetrack use will shortly be
celebrating its premiere – the BMW M5 MotoGPTM Safety Car.
Since 1999, BMW M has been the “official car of the MotoGP” and
affiliate partner of MotoGP organizers Dorna Sports, deploying its
fleet of safety cars to guarantee safety in the world’s fastest
motorcycle racing series. Like the predecessor model, the BMW M5
MotoGP Safety Car is equipped with a multitude of BMW M Performance
Parts so that it is able to fully meet the special demands on a lead
vehicle in professional motorsport. These also include M Performance
aerodynamics components as well as the BMW M Performance sports
exhaust system made from titanium. The BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will
make its first racetrack appearance at the 2017 season final in
Valencia, Spain, in November. During the 2018 season, it will be the
spearhead of the BMW M MotoGP Safety Car fleet.

The BMW M5: the quintessential high-performance sedan.
Thanks to numerous innovative features, the all-new BMW M5
offers perfect handling up to the vehicle’s dynamics limits – both on
the road and on the racetrack. These include the newly designed
M-specific four-wheel drive system M xDrive being employed in the BMW
M5 for the first time. It guarantees optimized driving dynamics
through precise handling and perfect traction. The heart of the BMW
M5, the 4.4-liter V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has
been extensively revised by our M engineers. It delivers 600 hp and a
maximum torque of 553 lb-ft, offering a significant increase in
performance vs. the predecessor models. Acceleration from 0-60 mph
with the new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission featuring Drivelogic is
just 3.2 seconds. The suspension features M-specific kinematic and
elastokinematic elements to help optimize driving dynamics. Weight is
also a crucial factor in terms of performance: This has been further
reduced, inter alia, by a roof made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

World premiere: 2018 BMW M3 “30 Years American Edition”
celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the M3 in the US with
a one of a kind (1/1) design created by BMW Group Designworks, built
through BMW Individual.

The BMW M3 is one of the most recognized vehicles in the automotive
industry, spanning a long history of success that seems to have no
boundaries, today it is still considered as one of the purest high
performance street sports cars. With the launch of the first
generation BMW M3 in 1986, BMW M revolutionized the sports car as it
was, built first and foremost for performance. Originally conceived as
homologation special for Group A Touring car racing – as seen in the
German Touring Car Championship (DTM), it became the most successful
touring car in the history of BMW. Its arrival to the US market in
1987 signaled the birth of the legend in America and to celebrate its
first 30 years on the road and track, BMW Group Designworks teamed up
with BMW Individual to create a one of a kind (1/1) design
highlighting its Motorsport heritage through American iconography.

Exterior inspired by an original M color and the American
color inspired theme.

With its finger on the pulse of the American experience, BMW Group
Designworks has created an American color inspired theme for the
30th Anniversary of the BMW M3 in the US. What better way
to celebrate the US arrival of the M3 than a palette of red, white and
blue. The 2018 BMW M3 “30 Years American Edition” design started life
as a 6-speed manual transmission BMW M3 Competition Package but it was
quickly transformed into a very special and unique vehicle as noted by
its striking exterior color, Frozen Red II Metallic. Although the name
of the exterior color is described as “frozen” for the low gloss
finish, as if the car is coated with a layer of frost, the heat of the
red pigment radiates from within, illuminating the muscular BMW M3
surfaces. Frozen Red II Metallic also speaks to the iconic BMW Henna
Red of the original M3 from the 1980’s.

The gilded tone is making a comeback after its eighties hey-day and
so complementing the exterior are a set of one-off M Performance
Golden light alloy wheels (763M Style – 19-inch front, 20-inch rear),
the color inspired by the M3 E30 DTM racing wheels. Also exclusive to
the exterior are the M color roof stripes that emphasize the M
identity on a premium material, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic
(CFRP), as well as a 30th Anniversary graphic applied to
the rear sunshade.

The exterior is complimented by an all-American, interior
tri-tone color scheme.

The interior could not be less special and the designers quickly
identified that there is nothing more American than red, white and
blue. Open the driver’s door of the 2018 BMW M3 “30 Years American
Edition” and its interior shines through with a continuation of the
exterior theme through an expertly crafted tri-color Merino leather
interior by BMW Individual. The BMW Individual Opal White Merino
leather interior provides a base for red stripes and blocks of blue.
The red stripes are expressed in Mugello Red Merino leather and the
blue is Fjord Blue Merino leather. Red, white and blue contrast
stitching provides a patriotic detail even at the smallest scale. Red
stripes can be seen on the side bolster, lower instrument panel and
the door panel. Blue is reflected in the seat insert. Opal White
surfaces feature red contrast stitching on the seats, lower section of
the instrument panel and center door panel, while Mugello Red facades
includes white contrast stitching on the seat bolster stripe, upper
section of the lower instrument panel, and armrest upper and lower
panels. Fjord Blue is seen at the seat insert as well as the seat back
shell insert. Black leather makes use of Blue/Red contrast stitching
on upper instrument panel on driver’s side, door handle, center
console knee bolster and gear shift bag. In addition, the American
flag is adorned with a gold fringe when displayed in the doors.

The 30th Anniversary graphic was inspired by the 3 Series
40th Anniversary graphic. The bold red, white and blue
color scheme is tempered by a subtle motif inspired graphic inscribed
on the headrest, decorative trim and the rear sun-shade. The
achromatic graphic juxtaposes “30th” over the American flag
symbolizing the 30 years Americans have been expressing their passion
for the BMW M3 in the US.

BMW M Performance Parts round-up the BMW M3 “30 Years American
Edition”. The shock absorbers with contrasting red coil
springs featured on the 2018 BMW M3 “30 Years American Edition” are
clearly distinctive features of the adjustable M Performance Sports
suspension, allowing the driver to lower the vehicle’s ride height
between 5 and 20 millimeters via the adjustable spring plate. The M
Performance sports suspension, enables customers to experience
racing-inspired driving dynamics in everyday use on the road.

Motorsports aerodynamics are present in this one of a kind (1/1) M3
through the BMW M Performance rear wing. This aerodynamic component is
handmade completely from carbon fiber (wing, side sections, support
brackets) and is accentuated with racing stripes, bringing motorsport
know-how to the streets and tracks.

Derived directly from motor racing, the one-off golden M Performance
wheels, which are milled and weight-optimized entirely from a forged
blank, contribute towards even better steering behavior, resulting in
a further increase in driving dynamics. The wheels are matched with
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for maximum grip and performance.

The lightweight valve controlled M Performance exhaust system with
titanium rear silencer generates a highly emotive sound reminiscent of
sports car racing and adds two 93 mm dual tailpipe finishers made from
carbon with the M logo to create a striking and unmistakable appearance.

In the interior, the M Performance armrest, door handles and shift
knob complete the tri-tone color scheme look and ensures an all-round,
high quality touch and feel. The armrest has a striking appearance
thanks to its noble materials and special look: Alcantara and Carbon
trimmed with contrasting three-colored M-stitching. Visually, the seam
traces a line all the way to the handbrake grip completing the overall
M Performance look that extends over the center console and new M
Performance shift knob.

One lucky customer will be able to get behind the wheel of this one
of a kind (1/1) 2018 BMW M3 “30 Years American
Edition” (MSRP of $128,635 plus $995 D&H) as it is
expected to be available for purchase after the show conclusion.
Details will be provided to interested parties at the BMW Booth

“Need for SpeedTM Payback”: Individualization and
high-tech carbon fiber also in the interactive video game.
BMW took innovative and spectacular paths at the presentation
of the BMW M5: Thanks to the partnership with Electronic Arts, the
world premiere took place for the first time in a video game – in
“Need for SpeedTM Payback”. Hence, BMW and Electronic Arts presented
the all-new BMW M5 for the first time at the Gamescom in Cologne,
Europe’s largest fair for interactive games and entertainment. In
“Need for SpeedTM Payback” (release: 10 November 2017), gamers are, as
in reality, able to refine their virtual BMW M5 with M Performance

Munich. 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of a motoring
icon, one which revolutionised the mid-size sports car segment when
its production started in 1986. The very first BMW M3 set a new
standard by which other carmakers would be measured – and, five model
generations later, are still judged today. BMW Motorsport Division,
the precursor to BMW M Division, was incredibly rigorous in its
deployment of undiluted motor racing technology in the development of
the first-generation BMW M3. Its endeavours produced a thoroughbred
high-performance sports car – based on the series-produced BMW
3 Series – that was perfectly suited to daily use. Over the three
decades that have followed, BMW M has gently refined its trailblazing
and highly successful creation from one generation to the next, while
always taking great care to preserve the original character of the M3.
The upshot is that there is arguably still no other car that blends
such prominently honed motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday
practicality into such an emotionally stirring overall package.

The 30th anniversary of the BMW M3 provides an ideal opportunity to
look back at four highly intriguing model variants that, for various
reasons, never made it past the prototype stage. Four surprise guests
will therefore be attending their progenitor’s birthday party: the BMW
M3 Pickup from 1986, the BMW M3 Compact from 1996, the BMW M3 Touring
from 2000 and the second incarnation of the BMW M3 Pickup unveiled in 2011.

Use in touring car racing was the overriding development
objective for the first-generation BMW M3.
The BMW M3 was not an attempt to produce a sporting
flagship for a volume-produced model range; instead it originated from
the idea of developing a racing car for motor sport that would also be
available in a road-going version. The selected category of racing was
Group A production touring cars – as seen in the German Touring Car
Championship (DTM) that had succeeded the German Racing Championship
(DRM). The Group A regulations stated that for a racing car to be
homologated, at least 5,000 road-legal units had to be sold within 12 months.

Having the chance to develop the production and race versions of the
car alongside one another presented the development team with a
tremendous opportunity, which they duly capitalised on. The axle
kinematics, suspension and damping were all perfectly tailored to the
future demands of motor racing, as was the braking system, which
combined the standard ABS with inner-vented brake discs at the front
and an engine-driven high-pressure pump. Details such as the
transmission’s shift pattern with first gear at the bottom left also
gave a clear indication of the vehicle’s singular focus on racing.

On top of this came extensive weight-saving measures. While the body
with broad wheel arches was manufactured from sheet metal in the
traditional manner, the front and rear bumpers along with the side
skirts, boot lid and spoiler were made of plastic, reflecting the
engineers’ commitment to intelligent lightweight construction. The BMW
Motorsport experts tweaked the car’s aerodynamics too, with the
C-pillar of the BMW M3 following a slightly shallower angle than the
standard body and having a broader base. This allowed the airflow to
be directed towards the distinctive rear spoiler more effectively.

Extensive use of high tech in the powertrain, too.
The experts at the Motorsport department used the
two-litre four-cylinder engine fitted in series-production models as
the basis for the M3’s unit, as the low weight of its construction and
its high-revving capabilities meant it had exactly the right
ingredients for a racing engine. To transform the well-mannered
everyday engine into an athletic performer with sports car
credentials, however, they had to subject it to some intensive power therapy.

First, they increased its displacement to 2.3 litres and converted it
to a four-valve arrangement. For this purpose, the team employed a
suitably modified cylinder head taken from the six-cylinder engine
featured in the BMW M1, whose combustion chambers were – conveniently
enough – spaced exactly the same distance apart as the four-cylinder
unit’s. The crank drive on the BMW M3 was designed to be so rigid that
it could handle 10,000 revolutions per minute and more. The standard
production car’s rated engine speed of 6,750 rpm therefore left plenty
of margin for further evolutions of the motor sport off-shoot.

From sporting machine to heavy-duty transporter: the BMW M3
Pickup (1986).
When the first generation of the BMW M3 was brought
out, it wasn’t just customers who were enthralled by its exceptional
dynamic abilities. It also caused quite a stir within the BMW
Motorsport department responsible for its development, who saw it as
the perfect means of transporting work equipment and parts around the
premises of what is now BMW M Division in Garching near Munich. The
only problem was that goods transport didn’t figure very highly on the
list of the first BMW M3’s many talents.

It didn’t take long to remedy the situation, the body of a BMW 3
Series Convertible being transformed into a BMW M3 Pickup. “The
convertible bodyshell was chosen as the basis for two reasons,”
recalls Jakob Polschak, head of vehicle prototype building and
workshops at BMW M Division and an employee at the company for more
than 40 years. “Firstly, we happened to have such a model at our
disposal and in perfect condition. And secondly, the convertible’s
built-in bracing made it the ideal choice for a pickup conversion.”

The first BMW M3 Pickup did not sport the original’s boldly flared
wings, as it was equipped with the narrower body of its regular,
volume-produced sibling. At first it was powered by the engine fitted
in the so-called “Italian M3”, which had a reduced two-litre
displacement due to tax regulations there and an output of 192 hp.
“Later we switched to the original 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine with
200 horsepower,” reveals Polschak. The BMW M3 Pickup went about its
work around the factory premises reliably for over 26 years before
finally being retired four years ago.

The BMW M3 Pickup’s long service life alone is clear evidence that
the one-off versions being presented here are not mere gimmicks or
engineering exercises. On the contrary, they are high-performance cars
that have been optimised to perfectly match their intended task or
field of use. As such, they epitomise the philosophy of BMW M. Plus,
they also fulfilled another important purpose: “Our apprentices,
graduate trainees and placement students assisted in the construction
of all of these prototypes,” explains Polschak. “This allowed them to
gain invaluable hands-on experience at the same time as freeing up
resources for us – a classic win-win situation.”

A starter model for young target groups: the BMW M3 Compact (1996).
The same was also true of the 1996 BMW M3 Compact,
of course. The idea behind this model was to present younger
customers, in particular, with an entry point into the world of BMW M
cars. “To a certain extent, the M3 Compact can be regarded as the
forefather of today’s BMW M2,” remarks the BMW M workshop chief with a
twinkle in the eye, and it’s easy to see why he draws the comparison.
If it had gone into production, the M3 engine’s power would in all
likelihood have been lowered somewhat. In the prototype, however, it
was allowed to unleash its full 321 hp, which made easy work of
propelling a lightweight car (it tipped the scales at just 1.3
tonnes). “It is 150 kilograms lighter, more agile, firmer and even
more uncompromising,” enthused German motoring magazine “auto motor
und sport” (issue no. 13/1996) after testing it.

A feasibility study under real-world conditions: the BMW M3
Touring (2000).
The BMW M3 Touring prototype likewise materialised
because a production model was under consideration. The M3 Compact was
made available to journalists for testing in order to both project an
image and sound out customer interest. But the M3 Touring served
entirely in-house purposes. “This prototype allowed us to show that,
from a purely technical standpoint at least, it was possible to
integrate an M3 Touring into the ongoing production of the standard
BMW 3 Series Touring with very little difficulty,” explains Jakob
Polschak. “One important thing we needed to demonstrate was that the
rear doors of the standard production model could be reworked to adapt
them to the rear wheel arches without the need for new and expensive
tools.” Once it had passed through the assembly line, the M3 Touring
required only minimal manual follow-up work to fit the M-specific
add-on parts and interior details, for example.

History repeats itself: the BMW M3 Pickup (2011).
Once the first-generation BMW M3 Pickup described
above eventually started to show the first serious signs of wear after
around a quarter of a century of service, it was time for a successor.
As with the original, those responsible for its creation again opted
for a convertible body due to the existing strengthening elements.
“The conversion work had initially proceeded in the usual, largely
unspectacular manner during the spring of 2011. But then someone came
up with the idea of marketing the vehicle as an April Fools’ joke, as
April 1 was just around the corner,” recounts Polschak. To prime the
public, spy shots of calibration runs on the Nürburgring’s
Nordschleife circuit emerged in the run-up to the day, which served to
fuel speculation about plans to build a production model.

And it worked. Reports from the time show that a good many
journalists and bloggers took the bait and believed the rumours. Even
the official press release published on 1 April 2011 did not
immediately set matters straight, first presenting the BMW M3 Pickup
as the “fourth body variant” following the Sedan, Coupe and
Convertible, before going on to say: “309 kW/420 hp under the bonnet
and a payload capacity of 450 kilograms over the rear axle take the
BMW M models’ hallmark blend of racing-style driving pleasure and
everyday practicality to a whole new level.” It also pointed out that
the Cd was only marginally higher than that of the BMW M3 Coupe, the
car was 50 kilograms lighter than the Convertible and the 20-kilogram
targa roof could be removed to further lower the centre of gravity and
therefore deliver even sharper handling dynamics.

It wasn’t until the final paragraph that the press release discreetly
revealed the model in question was actually a one-off built for use as
a workshop transport vehicle. Unlike its predecessor, however, it had
also been licensed for road use.

The BMW M3: a sporting icon and dynamic benchmark for five
generations.
30 years ago almost to the
day production began of the first series-produced BMW M3s. This
represented the opening chapter in a story of success which has no
equal in the automotive world. The 2.3-litre four-cylinder unit with
four-valve technology produced 147 kW/200 hp and accelerated the M3,
which weighed just 1,200 kilograms, from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in
just 6.7 seconds. Top speed was 235 km/h (146 mph). In 1988 the Evo
version was unveiled, with power increased once again to 220 hp and
its top speed to 243 km/h (151 mph). And this was followed in 1990 by
the final development stage of the first-generation M3: the BMW M3
Sport Evolution with 238 hp 2.5-litre engine, produced in a limited
run of 600 examples.

The second generation of the BMW M3 – not developed specifically for
use in motor sport this time – was a much more understated affair.
Unveiled in 1992, its six-cylinder engine developed 210 kW/286 hp from
three-litre displacement and peak torque of 320 Newton metres (236
lb-ft). It also featured the innovative new camshaft control system
VANOS. The new model set two world records – for the highest output
per litre (97 hp/l) and the highest specific torque (108 Nm (80
lb-ft)/l) produced by a volume-produced naturally-aspirated engine.

An extensive facelift in 1995 saw the displacement of the
six-cylinder in-line engine increased from 2,990 to 3,201cc, with
output rising to 236 kW/321 hp. Added to which, the new engine also
employed Double-VANOS, which brings fully variable camshaft control on
both the intake and exhaust sides. In summer 1996 the BMW M3 became
the first series-produced car to be offered with the option of an SMG
automated manual gearbox.

Featuring an aluminium bonnet with powerdome, prominently flared
wheel arches, an aerodynamically optimised boot lid with rear spoiler
lip and four tailpipes exiting the dual-flow exhaust system, the
third-generation BMW M3 unveiled in 2000 cut an extremely eye-catching
figure once more. Power again came courtesy of a naturally-aspirated
six-cylinder in-line engine. The completely newly developed unit
developed output of 252 kW/343 hp from its 3,246 cc and peak torque of
365 Newton metres (269 lb-ft).

Instead of being equipped with a straight-six engine, like the two
previous generations of the car, the fourth incarnation of the BMW M3
presented in 2007 was powered by a high-revving, naturally-aspirated
V8 developing 309 kW/420 hp. Among the extensive intelligent
lightweight design measures employed were the carbon fibre-reinforced
plastic (CFRP) roof fitted as standard and a front axle made almost
entirely from aluminium.

The current (fifth) generation of the BMW M3 was introduced in spring
2014. In keeping with the change in nomenclature for BMW’s
series-produced models, only the four-door sedan is badged “M3”, while
the coupe and the convertible variants were given the model
designation M4. In all three body variants, a free-revving
straight-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and
317 kW/431 hp provides the power. Rigorously applied intelligent
lightweight design elements include the extensive use of lightweight
materials such as CFRP and aluminium for many chassis and body
components. All of which has shaved around 80 kilograms off the weight
of its predecessor.

This summer, BMW M Division released an exclusive special-edition
model – limited to 500 units worldwide – as a special tribute to the
successful 30-year history of the BMW M3. With its Macao Blue metallic
exterior paint finish, the BMW M3 “30 Jahre M3” harks back to the
first generation of car, for which this colour shade was first
offered. The Competition Package, which is included as standard and
comprises extensive powertrain and suspension modifications, pushes
the engine output of the anniversary model up by 14 kW/19 hp to 331
kW/450 hp.

Press Contact: Alex Schmuck
Tel: 201-307-3783
E-mail: alexander.schmuck@bmwna.com

Press Kit,M3,Heritage,F80,Product,BMW M

January 13, 2016 6:00 pm EST…The BMW M3 Sedan, M4
Coupe and M4 Convertible are already regarded as the perfect
combination of high-performance sports car engineering with
unrestricted everyday utility. From spring 2016, all three body styles
will be available with a special Competition Package from BMW M GmbH
that combines added sporty personality with enhanced dynamics. As well
as extensive handling upgrades, the Competition Package also comes
with additional equipment features and a hike in power that takes
output to 444 hp.

The extra power means improved performance. The BMW M3 Sedan and M4
Coupe with optional 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT)
sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds (without Competition
Package: 3.9 sec.), while the BMW M4 Convertible reaches the same
speed in 4.1 seconds (without Competition Package: 4.2 sec). The
sprint time for models with the standard 6-speed manual transmission
is likewise 0.1 seconds faster in all cases than without the package.

The Competition Package includes Adaptive M Suspension, which has
been extensively tuned to the enhanced performance and handling, and
which features new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, along with
reconfigured driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+). The standard
Active M Differential on the rear axle and DSC Dynamic Stability
Control have likewise been configured to match the upgraded dynamics.
Forged, machine-polished, weight-and rigidity-optimized, multi-spoke
20-inch M alloy wheels (front 9J ×20; rear10 J ×20) with mixed tires
sizes (front: 265/30 R20, rear: 285/30 R20) complete the list of
chassis upgrades.

For the BMW M3 and BMW M4 Coupe, the Competition Package includes
special lightweight M sports seats that combine additional support on
the track with exceptional comfort on the street. Seatbelts with
woven-in BMW M stripes cap off an extremely sporty interior ambience.

Eye-catching exterior highlights of the Competition Package include
the M sports exhaust system with black chrome tailpipes. Even more
than its good looks, the most distinctive feature of the M sports
exhaust system is its potent sound, which brings added emotional
resonance to the driving experience. The starting rumble and the
distinctive burble on over run never fail to get under the skin of
dedicated drivers time and again.

The Competition Package for the BMW M3 and M4 is topped off by
extended BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim. In
additional to the already standard high-gloss Black finish on the the
side window trim, window recess finishers and exterior mirror frames
and bases, the Competition Package also includes high-gloss Black
finish on the BMW kidney grille, the side gills and the model badge on
the tail.

The Competition Package will be offered for a retail price of $5,500
on the M3 Sedan and Coupe and the $5,000 on the M4 Convertible.

Lighten Up. Power Up.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – December 11, 2013, 6:10pm Eastern
Time… BMW today announced the all-new BMW M3 Sedan and BMW
M4 Coupe models, which capitalize on the strengths of the latest 3
Series Sedan and fresh 4 Series Coupe models as their respective
foundations. As the first-ever BMW M cars to feature the achievement
of an engineered-in reduction in curb weight from one generation to
the next, the all-new M3 and M4 stand poised to attack corners, hills,
and braking zones, and will vigorously defend BMW M’s decades-strong
position as segment leader around the world.

Featuring a return to the inline-6 engine format made famous by BMW
M, the all-new, 3.0-liter BMW M3 and M4 engine is approximately 10
kilograms lighter than its V-8 predecessor and packs an even stronger
punch. With 425 horsepower from 5,500 – 7,300 rpm, 406 lb-ft of torque
from 1,850 – 5,500 rpm, and capable of 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds when
equipped with the M-DCT transmission (4.1 seconds with standard
6-speed manual), the all-new BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe will debut
at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and
will begin sales as 2015 models in early Summer, 2014. The M4 Coupe
will start with an MSRP of $65,125 and the M3 Sedan will start with an
MSRP of $62,925. Both prices include $925 Destination & Handling fee.

The launch of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe sees BMW M
GmbH revealing a new interpretation of the high-performance sports car
– and carrying the BMW M philosophy over into the fifth generation of
the M3. More than 40,000 examples of the fourth-generation BMW M3
Coupe were built, and now the BMW M4 Coupe is poised to continue this
success story. The “M4” badge is a reference to the model series that
provides the basis for the new M model – and, for the first time, the
Coupe will be introduced at the same time as the four-door variant.
Logic dictates the latter will be christened the BMW M3 Sedan.

“Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and
uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall
concept,” explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. “The
BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this
philosophy. The engine is the heart of every M model, and the new
turbocharged six-cylinder unit fitted in the two new cars combines the
virtues of a high-revving naturally aspirated unit with the strengths
of turbocharger technology. A committed lightweight design concept
produces a weight saving of around 80 kilograms over the outgoing M3.
The BMW M3 and BMW M4 take motor sport technology from the track to
the road, and thousands of laps of the legendary Nürburgring
Nordschleife – the world’s most exacting race track – have readied the
new models for that transition. Meticulous and passion-fuelled
development work has underpinned the creation of two high-performance
sports cars that set new standards in terms of overall concept,
precision and agility.”

The high-revving, inline-6 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology
freshly developed for the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe
produces a maximum output of 425 hp. Its peak torque of406 lb-ft is
available across a wide rev band and outstrips the figure recorded by
the outgoing BMW M3 by roughly 40 percent. And yet the engine also
achieves a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of nearly 25
percent. Both the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe cover the sprint from
0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual
transmission and even 3.9 seconds with the optional 7-speed M Double
Clutch Transmission.

In the interests of maximizing dynamic ability and ensuring excellent
efficiency, weight savings of around 80 kilograms have been achieved
over a comparably equipped predecessor model. The BMW M4 Coupe, for
example, has a DIN curb weight of 1,497 kilograms, thanks to the
rigorous application of intelligent lightweight design measures. These
include the increased use of lightweight materials such as
carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminum for a number of
chassis and body components. Indeed, both models feature a carbon roof.

One of the primary objectives in the development of the BMW M3 Sedan
and BMW M4 Coupe was to ensure the new cars offered impressive race
track capability. Hence the presence of a track-specification cooling
system, which ensures that the optimum temperature balance for the
engine, turbochargers and transmission is maintained at all times.

In order to accentuate the racing character of the two models in
terms of both their technical composition and the fine-tuning of the
cars, the engineers worked closely with BMW Motorsport’s professional
racing drivers during the development phase. For example, DTM drivers
Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock took part in the extensive testing and
set-up work carried out at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit.

Low-slung and broad-set, the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe
share a finely balanced stance on the road. Indeed, the M-specific
design of the two high-performance sports cars underlines their
performance capability. Large air intakes and Air Curtains at the
front end, exposed carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminum
body components, and the diffuser at the muscular rear end are not
merely design flourishes; they also fulfill functional roles in terms
of aerodynamics, cooling and weight saving.

Numerous aerodynamics measures integrated into all areas of
the body.

The aerodynamics concept of BMW M GmbH models has always been one of
the key elements in their development. The engineers need to channel
the air around the car to create the best possible platform for
dynamic excellence, while also ensuring the engine, powertrain and
brakes receive the requisite cooling even when operating under heavy
loads on the race track.

Details such as the powerfully formed front apron, smooth underbody
and clearly defined Gurney spoiler at the rear of the M3 Sedan (or
integrated spoiler lip at the rear of the BMW M4 Coupe) reduce lift by
an equal degree at the front and rear axle and produce optimum
handling attributes. “The way in which we channel the inflowing air
through the engine oil cooler creates a Venturi effect, which reduces
front axle lift and, in so doing, improves the steering,” explains
Albert Biermann, Head of Development BMW M GmbH. Elements like the Air
Curtain and M gills with integrated Air Breather rearwards of the
front wheels minimize turbulence in the front wheel arches. Together
with the aerodynamically optimized exterior mirrors in twin-stalk
style, they are also highly distinctive design features of the BMW M3
Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe and help reduce drag. These examples underline
in familiar fashion the success of M engineers in reconciling the
requirements of everyday use with the demands of action on the race track.

Sophisticated cooling concept for maximum performance.

The exceptional performance potential of the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4
Coupe places extremely exacting demands on temperature management in
the engine and peripheral assemblies. In order to ensure optimum
operating temperatures in everyday use, on short journeys around town
and out on the race track, the BMW M GmbH engineers have developed an
extremely effective cooling system. For example, alongside the two
ultra-dynamic turbocharger units, the air intake system of the
six-cylinder engine also includes an indirect intercooler, maximizing
charge pressure and engine output. As well as a main radiator, the
track-ready cooling concept also comprises a water cooler repositioned
to the side for the high- and low-temperature water circuits, and the
engine and transmission oil (if the M Double Clutch Transmission is
specified). These ensure a consistent temperature balance and
therefore high performance on the track as well as the road. An
additional electric coolant pump cools the turbocharger bearing mounts
when the car is stationary.

6-speed manual gearbox with throttle blipping.

The engine’s power is transferred to the road via a standard
six-speed manual gearbox with robust double-plate clutch. This unit is
considerably more compact than its predecessor and 26.4 lbs lighter.
As a means of increasing shift comfort, the manual gearbox uses
innovative new carbon friction linings in its synchronizer rings. Dry
sump lubrication provides an efficient supply of oil to all parts of
the engine. The gearbox blips the throttle on downshifts – previously
a feature reserved for the M Double Clutch Transmission. This
engagement speed control function improves the smoothness of the
transmission, helps to enhance stability and was originally developed
by motor sport engineers.

7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic with
Launch Control.

The third generation of the M-DCT sees the M engineers once again
setting the benchmark in terms of power and race track capability
without having to compromise on everyday usability. The optional
7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic prompts the new
high-revving turbocharged engine into emotionally impressive feats. As
well as changing gear automatically, in manual mode the transmission
enables ultra-fast gear changes with no interruption in the flow of
power. The integrated Launch Control function ensures optimum
sprinting performance off the line, producing acceleration figures
that would be out of range with the manual gearbox. Stability Clutch
Control opens the clutch when the car is understeering to bring it
back into line. And M-DCT also includes functions like the Drivelogic
modes that can be selected by the driver to give the BMW M3 and BMW M4
more comfortable, more economy-focused or even sportier
characteristics. The additional seventh gear over the manual gearbox
allows longer gear ratios – and delivers the efficiency gains you
would expect as a result.

The properties of the extremely light yet impressively durable
material CFRP have allowed the engineers to follow a fundamentally new
approach in the manufacture of the drive shaft. Made from CFRP, this
component feeds the engine’s torque from the gearbox to the rear
differential and works under extremely heavy loads – especially in
high-performance vehicles. “The impressive stiffness and low weight of
the CFRP tubing allow the drive shaft to be constructed as a
single-piece unit with no center bearing. As well as a weight saving
of 40 percent over its predecessor, we have achieved a reduction in
rotating masses and therefore improved drivetrain dynamics,” explains
Albert Biermann.

Even more accomplished rear-wheel drive with Active M Differential.

Among the other components that add fresh polish to the dynamic
repertoire of the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe are the hollow
lightweight output shafts of the rear differential and the Active M
Differential, which uses an electronically controlled multi-plate
limited-slip differential to optimize traction and directional
stability. The multi-plate limited-slip differential works with
extremely high precision and speed. Its control unit links up with the
DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and also takes into account the
position of the accelerator pedal, the rotational speed of the wheels
and the car’s yaw rate. Every driving situation is therefore precisely
analyzed and an impending loss of traction on one side of the car
identified at an early stage. The degree of lock – which may be
anywhere between 0 and 100 percent – is adjusted as required within a
fraction of a second, enabling wheel spin to be prevented on slippery
surfaces, in instances where the right and left rear wheel have widely
differing friction coefficients, in tight bends and when changing
direction with particular vigor. Optimizing traction in this way also
provides unbeatable driving stability in challenging conditions and
allows impressively dynamic acceleration out of corners.

M Dynamic Mode – a sub function of the Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC) system – quenches the thirst of enthusiastic drivers for keen
dynamics. While DSC intervenes as required to counteract understeer
and oversteer, M Dynamic Mode allows greater wheel slip and therefore
easy drifting. Owners with a taste for sporty and dynamic driving will
appreciate this breadth to the cars’ handling, although DSC will still
step in if the car ventures over the limits – unless it is switched
off completely. Whichever setting the driver chooses, he or she
remains responsible for the car’s stability.

Aluminum suspension elements ensure sharper dynamics.

The core expertise of BMW M GmbH resides in developing M cars that
offer impressive steering precision, on-the-limit adjustability,
agility and driving feeling, together with unbeatable traction and
outstanding directional stability – all without neglecting everyday
usability. In order to achieve these aims with the significantly
increased performance capability of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW
M4 Coupe, the axles of the outgoing BMW M3 have been redesigned with
painstaking attention to detail.

Here again, low weight and a high level of rigidity for the axle
systems are essential ingredients in ensuring the cars provide an
ultra-dynamic driving experience. In the double-joint spring strut
front axle alone, the use of a lightweight aluminum construction for
components such as control arms, wheel carriers and axle subframes
saves five kilograms over a conventional steel design. Play-free ball
joints and elastomeric bearings developed specially for the BMW M3
Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe ensure an optimum and direct transfer of forces
both laterally and longitudinally. An aluminum stiffening plate, CFRP
front strut brace and additional bolted joints between the axle
subframe and the body structure all help to increase the rigidity of
the front end.

Also lighter than the construction in the outgoing BMW M3 is the new
five-link rear axle. All the control arms and wheel carriers are
manufactured using forged aluminum, which reduces the unsprung masses
of the wheel-locating components by around three kilograms compared
with the previous model generation. The rigid connection between the
rear axle subframe and the body – without the use of elastic rubber
elements – is borrowed from motor sport and serves to further improve
wheel location and therefore directional stability. “The
double-elastic mounting for the rear differential within the rear axle
subframe – which is bolted to the body structure – has allowed us to
achieve a new level of driving precision, but without neglecting
comfort,” says Albert Biermann, citing another example of the perfect
symbiosis of pure-bred motor sport technology and excellent everyday usability.

The development of the tires for the cars was incorporated into the
construction process for the axles from the outset. For
high-performance sports cars like the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe,
in particular, steering feel and precision are the foremost
considerations in the development of tires for the front axle,
alongside lateral stability and braking forces. At the rear axle,
meanwhile, traction, lateral stability and directional stability take
center stage. For this reason, both cars will leave the factory on
low-weight 18-inch forged wheels (front axle: 9 J x 18, rear axle: 10
J x 18) with mixed-size tires (front axle: 255 mm, rear axle: 275 mm).
19-inch wheels and tires are available as an option. The specially
developed forged wheels make a significant contribution to the
reduction in the cars’ unsprung masses and, in turn, to the
optimization of dynamic qualities and efficiency. The experienced M
engineers have taken great care to ensure all the components between
the steering wheel and tires work together harmoniously and therefore
provide maximum driving precision and lateral stability, along with
good ride comfort.

Unique Electric Power Steering with three settings.

The electromechanical steering system in the new BMW M3 Sedan and new
BMW M4 Coupe represents a new development from BMW M GmbH and the
critical component in the link between driver and car. It offers the
gifts of direct steering feeling and precise feedback. The integrated
Servotronic function electronically adjusts the level of steering
assistance according to the car’s speed, providing optimum steering
characteristics at all speeds. The steering for the BMW M3 Sedan and
BMW M4 Coupe also offers the driver three settings as standard, which
can be selected at the touch of a button. COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+
modes allow the level of steering assistance to be adapted to suit the
situation at hand and the driver’s personal tastes.

“Together, the rigid front and rear structures, precise axle
kinematics and an impressively responsive electromechanical power
steering system help to deliver the outstanding steering and handling
characteristics of the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe,” sums up Biermann.

The optional Adaptive M suspension likewise comes with COMFORT, SPORT
and SPORT+ modes, enabling the driver to choose between a more
comfortable damper setting for urban driving, for example, a stiffer
set-up for dynamic driving on country roads, and a third option that
minimizes body movements and maximizes dynamic performance for use on
the track.

With their supreme dynamic attributes in mind, the BMW M3 Sedan and
BMW M4 Coupe also come as standard with BMW M compound brakes boasting
impressive feel, outstanding stopping power and high resistance to
fade. Far lighter than conventional equivalents, these brakes
contribute to a substantial reduction in unsprung masses and therefore
help to enhance dynamic performance. Even lighter BMW M carbon ceramic
brakes can also be specified as an option, their further optimized
performance attributes equipping them even more effectively for track
use and giving them even greater durability.

The new inline-6 M engine: High-revving, turbocharged unit
combines the best of both worlds.

The new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe from BMW M GmbH see a
return to a six-in-line engine configuration, as used on the second
and third generations of this iconic sports car. “When developing a
new model we first think about what requirements the vehicle will be
expected to meet, and then decide which concepts and technologies will
best meet these goals,” says Albert Biermann. The new turbocharged
engine combines the best of both worlds – reaching a maximum 7,600
rpm, it is unusually high-revving for a turbocharged engine, resulting
in linear power delivery over a wide engine speed range and a soulful
engine note, while M TwinPower Turbo technology ensures that peak
torque is on top over a broad rpm range. A further hallmark of this
engine is its outstanding efficiency.

The new engine sees a slight power upgrade over the previous V-8 to
425 hp, which is delivered between 5,500 and 7,300 rpm. Peak torque
has been increased by roughly 40 percent to 406 lb-ft, and is
maintained over a very wide rev band (1,850–5,500 rpm). The standard
sprint from zero to 60 mph takes the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4
Coupe 4.1 seconds respectively. Equipped with the 7-speed M Double
Clutch Transmission, this number even falls to 3.9 seconds. Top speed
is 250 km/h / 155 mph (electronically limited), The new engine also
boasts excellent fuel efficiency: the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe
achieve consumption nearly 25 percent better than the previous model’s
figures. Regulated pollutant emissions are EU6-compliant.

Instantaneous response, courtesy of M TwinPower Turbo technology.

The M TwinPower Turbo technology comprises two fast-responding
mono-scroll turbochargers, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection,
Valvetronic variable valve timing and Double-VANOS continuously
variable camshaft timing. Valvetronic and Double-VANOS work in tandem
to seamlessly control intake valve lift. The result is smooth and
efficient power delivery, very sharp response and reduced fuel
consumption and emissions.

The six-cylinder engine features a closed-deck crankcase design which
is very rigid and allows cylinder pressures to be increased for
improved power output. And instead of liners, the cylinder bores
feature a twin-wire arc-sprayed coating, which results in a
significant reduction in engine weight.

A further technical highlight is the forged, torsionally rigid
crankshaft which, as well as providing increased torque-carrying
capacity, is also lighter in weight. This significantly reduces
rotating masses, resulting in improved throttle response and acceleration.

Track-ready engine oil supply system for outstanding performance.

On the track, the exceptional driving dynamics of the BMW M3 Sedan
and BMW M4 Coupe place extra demands on the engine oil supply system,
whose design reflects the extensive motor sport experience of BMW M
GmbH. The low-weight magnesium oil sump, for example, features a
special cover to limit movement of the oil under the effects of strong
dynamic lateral acceleration. Under extreme longitudinal acceleration
and deceleration, an oil extraction pump and a sophisticated oil
return system situated close to the turbocharger likewise help to
maintain stable oil circulation. Oil is therefore supplied
continuously to all engine components in all driving situations –
whether in everyday motoring or during hard driving on the track.

An engine sound in keeping with the motor sport attributes of the BMW
M3 and BMW M4 is provided by an innovative flap arrangement in the
twin-pipe exhaust system. The electrically controlled flaps just
before the rear silencer minimize exhaust back-pressure and produce a
BMW M sound which is striking and unmistakable over the entire engine
speed range, as well as giving precise feedback on engine load. The
different selectable drive modes, which offer drivers a choice of
preconfigured, perfectly balanced vehicle set-ups, also feature
different engine sound profiles.

Lightweight design across the board: Shedding weight in all
the right places.

Intelligent lightweight design was a top priority in the development
of the BMW M3 and BMW M4. The goal was to minimize curb weight in
order to give both models outstanding driving dynamics and exemplary
efficiency. These measures have delivered impressive results, giving
the BMW M4 Coupe a DIN curb weight of 1,497 kilograms, around 80
kilograms lighter than a comparably equipped predecessor model – with
benefits for driving dynamics and fuel consumption as well.

BMW M3 Sedan also features CFRP roof for the first time.

On the outgoing models, the CFRP roof was confined to the Coupe
version. Now, for the first time, the four-door BMW M3 will get this
striking design and functional feature as well. The CFRP roof brings
weight savings of five kilograms (11 lbs) in the case of the BMW M3
Sedan and more than six kilograms (> 13 lbs) in the case of the BMW
M4 Coupe. It also lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity, which has a
positive impact on driving dynamics.

Made from aluminum rather than conventional steel, the front side
walls and the hood (with power dome) make an important contribution to
the models’ lightweight design concept, while at the same time
improving axle load distribution.

On the BMW M4 Coupe, the contoured roofline with central channel
continues into the trunk lid, emphasizing the even sportier
personality of the new model. The newly developed trunk lid not only
provides extremely effective tail end styling, its geometry is at the
same time precisely tailored for optimized aerodynamics, while the use
of carbon fiber and plastics makes for additional weight savings.

The new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe also feature a CFRP
propeller shaft. The high rigidity and low weight of the CFRP tube
mean that the propeller shaft can be produced as a single-piece
component, without a center bearing. This achieves weight savings of
40 percent over the previous model and a reduction in rotating masses,
which in turn results in more dynamic powertrain response.

The CFRP strut brace in the engine compartment is a further example
of how all weight-saving measures on these vehicles have also been
tailored to the improvement of driving dynamics. Weighing only 1.5
kilograms (3.3 lbs), the strut brace offers superior rigidity to a
comparable aluminum component and at the same time plays a key part in
the excellent steering response and precision of both vehicles.

The use of carbon in these models is a reminder that BMW is a global
leader in high-strength, lightweight CFRP construction, and that it
was BMW who brought out the first mass-production vehicle with a body
consisting entirely of this material – the innovative BMW i3.

Development input from professional racing drivers:
BMW works driver Bruno Spengler on the technical highlights.

When developing the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe, the BMW M
engineers could count not only on track-honed technologies, but also
on the driving talent of experienced racers. For example, Bruno
Spengler and Timo Glock, BMW Motorsport works drivers in the DTM
Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (German Touring Car Masters) series, took
part in extensive testing and set-up runs on the
Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit.

“I’m proud to have made a contribution to the set-up work on these
two cars,” says 2012 DTM champion Spengler, who also took third place
in the 2013 series. “The suspension has a very sporty set-up, the
feedback from the front axle is extremely direct, the grip at the rear
axle is phenomenal and the engine performance is awesome. This is the
ideal basis for our DTM car.”

Bruno Spengler on the six-in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology:

“As a race driver, I’m very impressed by the instant, lag-free
response from the two turbos as soon you step on the gas. This is a
sensational feature of this engine which translates to more fun at the
wheel and is perfect for sporty driving.”

… on the electronic power steering:

“The electronic power steering is very precise, and from my point of
view as a race driver that’s very, very important. It responds
instantly to inputs and provides excellent feedback.”

… on the rear axle:

“The rear axle has a very progressive locking action, due to the
electronically controlled limited-slip differential, and generates
huge amounts of grip. The electronic control system is configured so
that when you lift off the gas going into corners, the differential
opens up and the lock-up effect is reduced to zero, resulting in very
eager turn-in. When you accelerate out of the corner again, the
lock-up engages progressively all the way up to 100 percent full lock,
for optimal traction.”

Design: Striking use of forms underlines standout performance capability.

The design of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe visualizes in
eye-catching style the outstanding performance capability and
impressive handling properties of the two new models. “The superior
performance of the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe should be obvious at
first glance,” explains Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles.
“Indeed, the exterior design of the new BMW M3 and BMW M4 has a visual
impact that elevates the BMW M design language to a new level of
expression, highlighted by a purposeful character, emotional appeal
and dynamic verve.”

The front end: the powerfully expressive face of BMW M.

Viewed from the front, the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe stand out
most prominently with their powerful contours and a strongly defined
three-dimensionality, which lend them a powerfully expressive face.
Characteristic design elements leave no doubt that these cars are the
work of BMW M. There is the modern take on the twin headlight
arrangement (with optional LED technology), for example, not to
mention the distinctive twin-bar kidney grille with black painted
grille bars – which reflect the design of the characteristic BMW M
double-spoke wheels and bear the M logo – and the powerfully designed
front apron with its trio of large intakes supplying cooling air to
the high-performance engine and brakes. Among the other hallmark BMW M
design features on display is the characteristic power dome on the
hood, which hints at the potential of the brawny M TwinPower Turbo
engine and creates space for the intercooler. And the striking
exterior mirrors – with their suggested twin-stalk mounts – also
demand particular attention, their design optimizing the aerodynamics
of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe.

The flanks: low-slung silhouette and dynamic lines.

The sides of both cars extend the dynamic impression created by their
respective front ends. The hallmark BMW proportions of a long hood,
long wheelbase, set-back glasshouse and short front overhang are lent
further emphasis by familiar M design elements. “The muscular wheel
arches and eye-catching surface forms clearly underline the dynamic
potential of the BMW M3 and BMW M4,” adds Habib.

Those dynamics-accentuating details include likewise newly designed
M gills, which perform both a stylistic and a functional role.
Integrated into them are Air Breathers, which team up with the Air
Curtains in the front apron to help optimize the airflow around the
wheel arches and therefore improve aerodynamics.

The dark color of the CFRP roof (with its contoured roofline) gives
both models a lower-slung and more compact appearance, as the eye
perceives the roof pillars – painted in body color – to be the
uppermost point of the car. A flowing roofline lends the already
sporting overall appearance of the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe an
extra elegance and finesse. The line gains in momentum once again as
it heads rearwards, increasing aerodynamic downforce and giving the
rear a more muscular look at the same time.

The rear: BMW M4 with spoiler integrated into the trunk lid.

The design of the rear end displays striking differences in the two
models. The BMW M3 Sedan, for example, is fitted with a Gurney spoiler
to reduce lift, while the tailgate of the BMW M4 Coupe features an
integrated rear spoiler and is made from particularly lightweight
carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. As well as performing a functional
aerodynamic role, the tailgate also contributes significantly to the
BMW M4’s standalone design. Indeed, the pair of lines which begin life
flanking the power dome in the hood – and score a clearly defined path
over the CFRP roof – complete their journey in the trunk lid.

A shared feature of the two models is the prominently flared rear
wheel arches which, in combination with the wide track, underline the
confident appearance of the BMW M3 and BMW M4. A characteristic BMW M
detail of the rear end are the high-gloss polished, now slanting pair
of twin exhaust tailpipes, which are framed like jewels by the
sculptural rear apron with its integrated diffuser.

The interior design: flawless ergonomics in a sporting ambience.

Climbing into the BMW M3 and BMW M4, drivers will be greeted by the
interior architecture familiar from the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series,
complete with unimpeachable ergonomics and clear driver focus. In
keeping with the character of the two models, however, the interior
fulfils an even more sharply defined sporting brief. To this end, the
host of traditional BMW M equipment details includes M door sill
finishers, an M driver’s footrest, M gearshift lever, M-design
circular instruments with white graphics, M leather steering wheel
with chrome trim, color contrast stitching and electroplated-look
shift paddles (if the M-DCT gearbox is specified).

The front seats also represent an evocative expression of BMW M’s
motor sport genes. Taking visual inspiration from the bucket seats
fitted in racing cars, the seats feature a full-size single-piece back
panel. This means the construction of the seats is very flat, while
the high, width-adjustable side bolsters and low-set seat surface
allow an ideal seating position and provide excellent support. Despite
their undeniably sporty design, the BMW M sports seats can be equipped
with comfort-enhancing features including electric adjustment and
heating. On the seat surface, the stitching, upholstery segmentation
and perforation lend the seats a slim-fitting feel. Illuminated for
the first time, the BMW M logo on the seat backrests adds a new and
exclusive highlight.

Equipment: Extensive standard equipment joined by a host of
options that enhance dynamics and comfort.

The new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe leave the factory with a
thorough selection of equipment on board which reflects their
character as extremely performance-oriented cars offering excellent
everyday usability. In addition, customers can choose from an
extensive range of optional equipment to give the high-performance
sports cars an even more uncompromising sporting edge or push their
comfort levels to the maximum.

Carbon roof as a visible sign of the commitment to lightweight design.

The CFRP roof, which was fitted to the Coupe version only of the
outgoing BMW M3, is a standard feature of both the new BMW M3 Sedan
and the new BMW M4 Coupe. The “exposed” styling of the carbon-fiber
construction accentuates not only the exclusivity of the two models
and their direct links to motor sport, it also emphasizes clearly the
lightweight design philosophy underpinning the cars.

Other standard-fitted and exclusive exterior details include the
lightweight hood with eye-catching power dome, the font side panels
made from aluminum, the sculpted front apron with three large air
intakes, the black double-bar kidney grille, the hallmark M exterior
mirror casings, the rear apron with integrated diffuser, the exhaust
system with four tailpipes, and the trunk lid with fitted Gurney on
the BMW M3 or the aerodynamically shaped lightweight tailgate with
integrated spoiler of the BMW M4. Both models come as standard with
forged 18-inch BMW M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tires. Forged
19-inch light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tires can be ordered as an
option, in either Ferric Grey or Black.

Interior with exquisite materials and motor sport ambience.

The BMW M3 and BMW M4 also stand out with an interior that is
exclusive and functional in equal measure. For example, the M Sport
leather multifunction steering wheel is fitted as standard, as are
bucket-style M sports seats and the BMW Individual roof liner in
Anthracite. Like the front seats, the distinctively contoured
backrests of the rear seats also offer exceptional lateral support.
They are made from a lightweight composite material and can be folded
in a 60:40 split. This gives the BMW M3 and BMW M4 a degree of
variability and everyday usability that is well beyond the norm for
high-performance sports cars of their level.

Drivers of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 can look forward to piloting their
car from behind a double-spoke M leather steering wheel. The M logo,
chrome trim and color contrast stitching are central elements of the
cabin’s racing ambience. Both models come as standard with a six-speed
manual gearbox, while the 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission is
available as an option. M-DCT allows the driver to change gears using
either the selector lever on the center console or the shift paddles
mounted on the steering wheel.

Innovative driveline and chassis technology deliver unbeatable dynamics.

The optional M-DCT Drivelogic changes gear with no interruption in
the flow of power, enabling it to reduce shift times, while a Launch
Control system optimizes acceleration off the line.

The standard-specification Active M Differential at the rear axle
guarantees optimum traction, while the likewise factory-fitted
electromechanical M Servotronic steering with three settings delivers
sporty, direct responses. Both the new BMW M3 and new BMW M4 are
equipped as standard with BMW M compound brakes, but customers can
also order their car with even lighter and more effective BMW M carbon
ceramic brakes, which come with the additional visual highlight of
gold-painted calipers.

Optional add-ons for comprehensive driver information.

BMW has developed a free BMW M Laptimer app, which allows owners to
analyze their personal driving style. Once their smartphone is hooked
up to the BMW – via USB cable or the car’s snap-in adapter – customers
can operate the BMW M Laptimer app easily using the iDrive Controller.
The app then gets to work without delay, recording the car’s speed,
longitudinal and lateral acceleration, engine revs, the gear engaged
(if the M-DCT or automatic gearbox is specified), steering angle,
accelerator position and fuel consumption. That means, when the data
is subsequently analyzed via graphic displays on the customer’s
smartphone, the driver’s reactions can also be assessed. Another
feature allows two recordings on the same track to be compared
corner-by-corner. The readings used here can be either the driver’s
own or data shared via email.

The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe are also available – needless to
say – with the wide variety of driver assistance systems and mobility
services introduced under the BMW ConnectedDrive banner, some of which
will already be familiar from the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series. Among
the highlights are a new generation of the Navigation system
Professional, offering extra capability, sharper graphics and 3D
elements for the map display, Active Driving Assistant, which warns
the driver of a looming collision with a pedestrian, and the adaptive
full LED headlights,

The optional Head-Up Display in the BMW M3 and BMW M4 comes with
additional, M-specific functions such as a gear display, rev counter
and Optimum Shift Indicator.

Production: Return to the birthplace of the BMW M3.

It was at the Preußenstraße headquarters of BMW Motorsport GmbH in
Munich 28 years ago that the company’s then managing director Paul
Rosche developed the idea for the BMW M3. Production began just a few
months later at the original BMW plant next door. A total of 17,970
units of the first-generation BMW M3 were built here up to 1991. And
now, almost 23 years later, production of the iconic sports car – long
since guaranteed legendary status – is returning to its birthplace.
BMW Plant Munich will host production of the new BMW M4 Coupe, while
the BMW M3 Sedan will be built at BMW Plant Regensburg, where 222,293
units of the second, third and fourth generations of the BMW M3
combined have been produced since 1992.

Full integration into the regular manufacturing process.

One of the reasons for the decision to split production of the BMW M3
and BMW M4 between the two facilities centered on the company’s
commitment to integrating the two high-performance sports cars into
the production processes for their respective donor models. For
example, the BMW M4 will be built alongside models including the
standard BMW 4 Series Coupe in Munich, and Regensburg is the venue for
production of the BMW 3 Series Sedan as well as the new BMW M3. Among
the benefits of “mixed” production on a shared line is that the plants
can respond quickly to market fluctuations by making adjustments to
unit figures as required. As well as efficient production planning and
logistics, the essential ingredient in this approach is the
single-line system: both M models will be built alongside their
respective donor models on the same production line.

Intensive experience-sharing ensures a smooth production start-up.

This will be the first time the Munich plant has handled production
of a lightweight design concept bringing together an aluminum hood and
side panels, CFRP roof and lightweight tailgate in this combination.
The bonding facility for the carbon roof in the paint shop is also new
to Munich. The intensive sharing of experience with colleagues in
Regensburg helps ensure that the employees in Munich maintain an
outstanding level of manufacturing expertise when it comes to
lightweight design technologies. Indeed, Plant Regensburg can call on
many years of experience in lightweight design. As well as production
of the outgoing generation of the BMW M3 with its carbon roof, the
Regensburg factory has also been responsible for the manufacture of
numerous BMW Motorsport touring cars built for race action.

Hall of fame: The evolution of an automotive legend over three decades.

The new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe represent the fifth
generation of a pure-bred sports car offering excellent everyday
usability – one which has raised the bar in the ultra-high-performance
mid-size sedan/coupe segment at every turn over the last three
decades. “The BMW M3 has been our iconic model in the high-performance
sports car segment since 1985, when the company unveiled the first
generation of the BMW M3 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in
Frankfurt,” recalls Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH.
“Today, 28 years later, the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe are
set to extend this tradition into a fifth generation and take the
car’s unique combination of outstanding dynamics and unrestricted
everyday usability to yet another new level.”

The first generation: forming the basis for the world’s most
successful touring car.

In spring 1985, the BMW Motorsport department began development of a
racing machine to line up in touring car competition. The road going
version required for homologation – 5,000 examples of which had to be
built for sale per year to satisfy the sporting regulations for this
category of racing – was conceived from the outset as a race-ready
Group A machine. The inaugural BMW M3 celebrated its premiere in
September 1985 at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), with the market
launch following in summer 1986. Its naturally aspirated four-cylinder
engine developed 143 kW/195 hp (version without catalytic converter:
147 kW/200 hp) from a 2.3-litre displacement, accelerated from 0 to
100 km/h / 62 mph in 6.8 s (6.7 s) and had a top speed of 230 km/h /
143 mph (235 km/h / 146 mph).

In this trim, the first-generation BMW M3 exceeded all sales
expectations. Including the Convertible variant, the various evolution
stages of the car and the special-edition models, BMW had sold a total
of 17,970 units worldwide by the time production was wrapped up in 1991.

The second generation: three variants of a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”.

The successor to the original M3 was not designed as the basis for a
racing car. However, it was developed from the outset in three body
variants. The two-door Coupe, which made its debut in 1992, was
followed onto the market in 1994 by a Convertible and – for the first
time – a four-door Sedan. All three models were powered by a
six-cylinder 3.0-litre engine developing 210 kW/286 hp, which powered
the car to 100 km/h / 62 mph from a standstill in under six seconds.
Top speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h / 155 mph. A
small-series M3 GT variant was added to the range in 1994, its 217
kW/295 hp sending it straight to the top of the M3 performance scale
at the time. In 1995 the car’s displacement was increased to 3.2
liters and output rose to 236 kW/321 hp.

In 1997 the BMW M3 became the world’s first volume-produced car to be
made available as an option with the Sequential M Gearbox (SMG). This
transmission variant was based on the conventional gearbox for the M3,
but with a clutch that was activated electro-hydraulically to change
gears. M3 drivers no longer needed to press a clutch pedal; all they
had to do to change gear instantly on one level was pull or push the
gearshift lever. Initial skepticism was defied by impressive success,
and by the time production came to an end almost one in every two
examples of this generation of the M3 generation was fitted with an
SMG gearbox. The M3 had grown from a niche sports car to a resounding
sales success: 71,242 units of the Coupe, Convertible and Sedan
combined were produced at Regensburg.

Several design features of the second-generation BMW M3 also cemented
their places in the driver’s consciousness. They included special
light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design and the specially formed,
aerodynamically optimized exterior mirror casings with their two
wing-shaped struts. These highlights have been revisited time and
again in subsequent generations of the M3 in the form of some
fascinating design cues.

The third generation: enhanced dynamics in a sharper design.

The third generation of the BMW M3 – launched in 2000 and available
in coupe or convertible form only – added another, now traditional,
signature feature to the model: a power dome on the hood. The new
model also raised the bar another not inconsiderable notch in terms of
performance and dynamics. Its six-cylinder in-line engine still had
3.2-litre displacement, but now developed 252 kW/343 hp. And that
meant the M3 could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h / 62 mph in 5.2
seconds (Convertible: 5.5 s), should the occasion demand. Almost more
impressive still, though, was the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h / 50 to
75 mph, which could be dispatched in a mere 5.4 seconds. Evidence of
the six-cylinder engine’s exceptional pulling power could not have
been provided any more emphatically.

For the first time, the BMW M3 now also came with a variable
differential lock at the rear axle allowing anywhere between 0 and 100
percent lock. The results were noticeable benefits in terms of
traction and grip when pulling away and cornering at pace. Added to
which, the second generation of the Sequential M Gearbox (SMG II) now
also allowed the driver to change gear using paddles on the steering wheel.

The sporting flagship of this M3 generation was the BMW M3 CSL
introduced in 2003. The three-letter suffix stood for “Coupe Sport
Lightweight”, a billing justified by elements such as a carbon-fiber
roof, center console and door panels, a lighter rear window and the
omission of numerous comfort-oriented features. With a curb weight of
just 1,385 kilograms, it tipped the scales some 110 kilograms below
the standard M3. All 1,383 units of the 265 kW/360 hp “cornering king”
were sold within just a few months.

The fourth generation: V-8 engine and intelligent lightweight design.

2007 signaled a break with tradition as the BMW M3 took to the stage
for the first time in 15 years without the straight-six unit so
frequently crowned Engine of the Year. Instead, the fourth-generation
car – which appeared in coupe, sedan and convertible form (the latter
joined the range in 2008) – was powered by an eight-cylinder unit. The
new 3,999cc engine developed 309 kW/420 hp and some 85 percent of its
maximum 400 Newton meters (295 lb-ft) of torque was available across a
huge 6,500 rpm rev range. The engineers continued along the path of
lightweight design with the Coupe in particular. On the back of
positive experience with other M models, the roof was once again made
from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. The hood with its striking power
dome was made from aluminum, as were large sections of the newly
developed lightweight chassis.

Among the highlights of the fourth-generation car’s production run
were the exclusive small-series variants of the BMW M3 which shone an
even brighter spotlight on its racing-inspired characteristics. Here,
the BMW M3 GTS – road-registered but developed for club sport racing –
stood out in particular. The displacement of the standard M3’s V-8
engine was expanded to 4.4 liters to produce peak output of 331 kW/450
hp. Specially developed chassis components and aerodynamic measures,
plus a two-seat cockpit conceived for track use, equipped this
exclusive special-edition model (only available in show-stealing Fire
Orange paintwork) for competitive action on the track and generated a
particularly intense M feeling on the road. 135 examples of the BMW M3
GTS were delivered to customers.

The BMW M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) presented in 2011 was
limited to just 67 units. Exclusively manufactured lightweight
components and modified chassis technology imbued this 331 kW/450 hp
model, which was based on the BMW M3 Sedan and built at the BMW M GmbH
factory, with exceptionally precise handling balance. The hood of the
BMW M3 CRT was made from two CFRP moldings encasing an aramid
honeycomb structure, its bucket seats featured two CFRP layers wrapped
around a recycled-paper honeycomb, and a carbon layer made using
conventional production technology was added to visible areas. A rear
spoiler and an air-channeling element integrated into the front apron
(both made from CFRP) rounded off the exclusive lightweight elements
found on the BMW M3 CRT.
