Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – March 17, 2015 … The
BMW X5 xDrive40e, the company’s first plug-in
hybrid Sports Activity Vehicle, charts the next chapter of BMW’s
ongoing EfficientDynamics initiative. Benefitting from the
groundbreaking work by BMW i on electromobility, the X5 xDrive40e
combines the company’s award-winning 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo
four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, powered by a lithium-ion
battery, integrated into its 8-speed automatic transmission. This
newest BMW SAV can travel approximately 14 miles on pure electric
power, ideally suited to short commutes and quick trips around town.
Working in concert, the gasoline engine and electric motor puts out
308 horsepower and produces 332 lb-ft, enough to propel the X5
xDrive40e from 0-60mph in just 6.5 seconds. As the name implies, it
features BMW xDrive, the company’s intelligent all-wheel drive system,
for optimal stability and traction under all circumstances and road
conditions. Final US EPA fuel economy testing returned 56 MPGe. The
2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e will arrive in US showrooms on October 3rd for
$63,095 including Destination and Handling.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e is the first plug-in hybrid production model
from the core BMW brand. It combines the versatility and luxurious
ambience of a full-sized Sports Activity Vehicle with the superb
traction offered by the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system
as well as BMW EfficientDynamics eDrive technology for exemplary efficiency.

BMW eDrive technology provides exceptionally efficient performance as
well as the potential for all-electric mobility with zero tailpipe
emissions, ushering in a whole new form of driving experience in a
Sports Activity Vehicle. At the same time, the BMW X5 xDrive40e reaps
the benefits of the technology and know-how transferred from the debut
of the BMW i cars. The BMW i8 blazes a trail for seamless blending of
sustainability and The Ultimate Driving MachineTM driving thanks to
plug-in hybrid drive power. These traits can now be enjoyed in a model
from the core BMW brand.

Drive duo and permanent all-wheel drive for trademark driving
pleasure and maximum efficiency.
Thanks to its duo of
drive units, intelligent hybrid powertrain control and permanent
all-wheel drive, the BMW X5 xDrive40e promises effortless performance
and outstanding efficiency on the road. Its drive system comprises a
four-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a
synchronous electric motor integrated into the
8-speed
Steptronic automatic transmission. The lithium-ion high-voltage
battery pack can be topped up from any 120-volt/15 amp electrical
outlet or – quickly and conveniently – from the BMW Charging
Station, as well as at public charging stations. The
high-voltage battery, which also supplies power to the battery for the
12V electrical system via a voltage transformer, is housed underneath
the luggage compartment floor, where it is particularly well protected
in the event of a crash. The BMW X5 xDrive40e offers a luggage
capacity of 34.2 – 72.5 cubic feet. The plug-in hybrid model thus
provides all the versatility associated with a full-sized sports
activity vehicle in terms of not just its driving qualities but also
its levels of spaciousness.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e furthermore succeeds in fusing its versatility
and poise with a level of efficiency that simply places it in a class
of its own. Short everyday journeys up to 14 miles can be easily
completed with zero tailpipe emissions, while actual fuel consumption
is reduced substantially when driving for longer distances. Capable of
consuming zero fuel in electric mode, according to US EPA testing the
BMW X5 xDrive40e is rated at 56 MPGe, setting new benchmarks for
efficiency in its segment. On longer journeys, when both engine and
motor need to be deployed, the powertrain system which has been
systematically geared towards maximizing efficiency keeps the fuel
consumption and emissions figures far lower than in comparable models
with similar power output. The plug-in hybrid drive system in the
BMW X5 xDrive40e produces major efficiency savings in everyday driving
situations when compared to conventionally powered models in this segment.

BMW TwinPower Turbo and BMW eDrive technologies mated to
perfection.
The 2.0-liter four cylinder in the
BMW X5 xDrive40e has already won the coveted title of “International
Engine of the Year” three times, as well as having been named to
Ward’s “10 Best Engines”, and features a TwinScroll turbocharger,
High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and
variable camshaft control on both the intake and exhaust sides
(Double-VANOS). It generates a maximum output of 240 hp and 260 lb-ft
of peak torque.

The electric motor provides output of 111 hp, while its maximum
torque of 184 lb-ft is available from the word go in typical electric
drive fashion. This has the effect of boosting the engine’s output for
thrilling, instantaneous responsiveness and power build-up with
absolutely no delay when accelerating from stationary, as well as far
more dynamic performance whenever a quick burst of speed is required.
The BMW X5 xDrive40e completes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just
6.5 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. In
all-electric drive mode the vehicle is capable of a top speed of
75 mph, again electronically limited.

BMW xDrive permanent all-wheel drive even in all-electric
mode.
The power stemming from the two drive units is
transformed into effortless forward motion courtesy of the 8-speed
Steptronic transmission and the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive
system. The BMW X5 xDrive40e can be optionally equipped with shift
paddles on the steering wheel, enabling the driver to swiftly make
manual gear selections with the greatest of ease. Regardless of the
proportion of drive power being sourced from the engine and motor
respectively, xDrive ensures optimal traction in all weather and road
surface conditions, together with optimized handling stability and
increased agility when powering through corners. An electronically
controlled multi-plate clutch provides the basis for fully variable
distribution of the drive torque between the front and rear wheels.
xDrive is linked up to the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), making it
capable of acting in advance to counter vehicle understeer or
oversteer and to always direct drive power in such a way as to
optimize the handling dynamics.

Driving Dynamics Control switch and eDrive button allow the
vehicle set-up and powertrain control to be configured as desired.

The eDrive button on the center console lets
the driver modify the powertrain control. When the vehicle is first
started, the default AUTO eDrive setting is activated,
with both engine and electric motor working efficiently in tandem. The
electric motor alone is used for setting off with normal power
requirements, while the engine cuts in at around 45 mph or when the
driver wishes to accelerate very sharply. In this mode, the
intelligent operating strategy determines the most efficient drive
combination at all times and switches to it automatically. The driver
can also switch to the all-electric drive mode setting MAX
eDrive, in which the vehicle is powered solely by the electric
motor. This mode is designed for comfortable driving with zero local
emissions without the engine being started, and offers a maximum range
of 14 miles at a limited top speed of 75 mph.

The third mode that can be activated is the SAVE Battery
setting, which allows the driver to save or build up the high-voltage
battery’s energy reserves for a later point in time. When driving on
the highway, for instance, the state of charge can be kept constant or
even boosted in order to use the high-voltage battery’s power for
all-electric driving in urban areas later in the journey. In this way,
the stored electrical energy can be selectively deployed exactly when required.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e also comes standard with a Driving Dynamics
Control switch, just like the conventionally powered model variants of
the sports activity vehicle. This can be used to activate the vehicle
set-up modes COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO, which each have the effect of
altering the throttle mapping, the steering characteristics, the
responses of the 8‑speed Steptronic transmission, as well as the
characteristics of the standard Dynamic Damper Control on the
BMW X5 xDrive40e. The ECO PRO mode triggers efficiency-optimized
control of electrically powered comfort functions, such as the air
conditioning, seat heating and heated mirrors. Besides this, when the
driver’s foot is off the accelerator at speeds between 0 and 100 mph,
the coasting function shuts off the engine, allowing the vehicle to
glide along without burning any fuel.

The modes selectable with the eDrive button and the Driving Dynamics
Control switch can be combined with one another at will, allowing the
powertrain control and vehicle set-up to be tailored precisely to the
prevailing situation and the driver’s personal preferences. In this
way, comfort, sportiness and efficiency can each be combined with
high-intensity hybrid driving as desired.

Instrument cluster and Control Display with hybrid-specific
readouts.
The BMW X5 xDrive40e features a
black-panel instrument cluster with enhanced hybrid-specific functions
added to its array of readouts. The drive readiness display positioned
in the lower part of the tachometer switches from “OFF” to “READY”
when the start/stop button is pressed. The high-voltage battery’s
state of charge is visualized in the form of a battery symbol below
the gear display. The Driving Dynamics Control switch setting is also
indicated, as is the operating mode selected with the eDrive button.
Depending on the selected drive mode, information on the vehicle’s
electric and total range, current fuel or electricity consumption,
recuperation of electrical energy in the high-voltage battery and the
progress of vehicle charging can likewise all be shown in the
instrument cluster.

Model-specific menu options and readouts are also available in the
iDrive operating system’s Control Display. An energy flow display can
be called up while on the move, illustrating in graphical form the
interaction between combustion engine and electric motor as well as
how energy is being fed to the high-voltage battery. Charging of the
battery from the power grid can also be controlled from the iDrive
menu using a timer function, which can factor in a
planned departure time as entered by the driver. In addition to this,
preconditioning of both the interior and the battery can be programmed
in the iDrive menu. Timer-controlled cooling or heating ensures a
pleasant temperature inside the passenger compartment ready for the
start of the journey, while the high-voltage battery can also be
cooled so that it is in an optimum operating state at the time of
departure. The electrically powered auxiliary heating and ventilation
function is also part of the standard specification on the
BMW X5 xDrive40e. It can either run on grid power during vehicle
charging or be powered by the high-voltage battery if it has
sufficient capacity.

BMW X5 xDrive40e: a classic sports activity vehicle offering
unique hybrid performance.
Exclusive, bespoke design
touches on the model’s exterior clearly identify the BMW X5 xDrive40e
as a classic sports activity vehicle while also making its unique
hybrid capabilities plain to see. The most noticeable feature is the
charging connection for the high-voltage battery located in the left
front fender. Blue light effects also appear here at the start of the
charging process to indicate the flow of energy. The exhaust system on
the BMW X5 xDrive40e has a twin-tailpipe design with trapezoidal tips.
Besides the model badge at the front of the vehicle’s flanks, the
“eDrive” logo, already familiar from the BMW i models, graces the
tailgate and door sills with their blue background as well as the
center console.

Apart from Dynamic Damper Control, the standard specification for the
BMW X5 xDrive40e also includes self-levelling rear air suspension. The
2‑zone automatic climate control that is standard on all BMW X5 models
extended to include an auxiliary heating and ventilation system
comprising an electric instantaneous water heater and an electric
refrigerant compressor. In addition to this, all of the optional
extras from the BMW X5 range are available, with the exception of the
third row of seats, the Adaptive M Suspension, Active Steering and
comfort seats in the rear. The BMW X5 xDrive40e can, however, be
specified with xLine and Luxury Line for the exterior and interior to
emphasize either the Sports Activity Vehicle’s robust, versatile
nature or its exclusive, luxurious character. The plug-in hybrid model
can also be ordered with M Sport as well as the Ivory White and Mocha
Interior Design Packages.

The BMW Navigation Professional system is another standard feature in
the BMW X5 xDrive40e. A wealth of BMW ConnectedDrive options are
offered, including Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go,
BMW Head-Up Display, the BMW Night Vision system with pedestrian and
animal recognition, Lane Active Blind Spot Detection, Parking
Assistant, rear view camera, Surround View and Speed Limit Info. All
driver assistance systems are also available when driving in
all-electric mode. The Adaptive LED Headlights, Comfort Access, as
well as the full selection of 19- and 20-inch light-alloy wheels, are
available to order for the BMW X5 xDrive40e.

Highly versatile charging options as well – thanks to
pioneering products and services from BMW 360°
ELECTRIC.
The plug-in hybrid design of the
BMW X5 xDrive40e provides the ideal basis for extensive use of the
electric drive system for highly efficient mobility, even including
urban driving with zero tailpipe emissions. Its high-voltage battery
offers a gross energy capacity of 9.2 kilowatt hours (kWh) and can be
topped up with energy from a home charging station, like the BMW i
Charging Station, as well as at public charging stations. With an
occasional use charger, the BMW xDrive40e can be charged from a
standard 120-volt outlet.

A tailor-made solution for safe, simple and extra-fast battery
charging at home is available for the BMW X5 xDrive40e under the
umbrella of BMW 360° ELECTRIC. The BMW Charging
Station is capable of replenishing the high-voltage battery at
a charging rate of 3.5 kW (16 A/220 V). As a result, it takes
approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to fully recharge an empty
battery pack. Charging progress can be checked on a graphic displayed
in the vehicle’s instrument cluster or on a smartphone using the
BMW Remote app. The data displayed on the monitor includes the
quantity of energy supplied and information on preceding charge cycles.

Under the umbrella of BMW 360° ELECTRIC customers are
offered an all-embracing service concept covering everything from the
supply and installation of the charging station to maintenance,
support and other services. There is also the ChargeNow service,
comprising a ChargeNow card that grants access to the entire network
of ChargePoint public charging stations nationwide. Beyond this, the
BMW 360° ELECTRIC portfolio also comprises BMW Solar and ParkNow Long
Term programs as well as maintenance, assistance and other customer
services that have been specially tailored to this model and eMobility.

Innovative new functions from BMW ConnectedDrive furthermore help to
plan journeys in such a way that the vehicle drives on electric power
alone as much as possible and at maximum efficiency at all times. The
Navigation Professional system fitted in the BMW X5 xDrive40e gives
drivers the option of calculating a hybrid-specific ECO PRO route to
an entered destination, which makes allowance for factors such as the
traffic situation, the route profile and driving style. The
intelligent energy management function in the BMW X5 xDrive40e
utilizes the available data on the route profile for all
navigation-assisted journeys anyway, together with real-time traffic
information. This forms the basis for anticipatory and
efficiency-optimized powertrain control that keeps fuel consumption as
low as possible while making intensive use of electric mobility, for
example when nearing the journey’s destination. On a longer journey
that goes through both rural and built-up areas, for instance, Brake
Energy Regeneration can be employed and the engine’s load points
deliberately raised at higher speeds to ensure there are sufficient
power reserves for completing the urban sections in all-electric drive
mode. What’s more, the locations of public charging stations are added
to the selection of points of interest on the navigation map whenever
route guidance is activated.

The BMW Remote app also comes in a hybrid-specific version and lets
the driver retrieve information on the high-voltage battery’s state of
charge even when they are away from the vehicle by using a smartphone.
The app also displays the location of public charging stations.
Efficiency evaluations for the last journey completed can be viewed on
the smartphone as well, along with the total distance driven purely on
electric power and the amount of fuel saved by using grid power. The
auxiliary heating and ventilation functions of the BMW X5 xDrive40e
can similarly be activated to heat or cool the interior prior to departure.

Production at the BMW Spartanburg plant: centre of excellence
for BMW X models and hybrid technology.
The
BMW X5 xDrive40e is being produced at the BMW Spartanburg plant in
South Carolina. This is where all other model variants of the sports
activity vehicle are also built along with the BMW X6, BMW X3 and
BMW X4 models. It has been over 15 years since the first-generation
BMW X5 went into production. Since then, this US plant has evolved
into the global center of excellence for BMW X models.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e is assembled in parallel with both the other
model variants of the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 on a shared production
line. Special assembly steps have been added to the manufacturing
process for integrating the hybrid-specific components. The
high-voltage battery is manufactured in a newly constructed production
hall on the site of the BMW Spartanburg plant. All production
processes are subject to the same strict quality and safety standards
that the BMW Group applies worldwide. The BMW Spartanburg plant stands
out for its resource-efficient system of energy supply. It was here
that the intelligent Energy Data Management System (iEDMS) with
continuous and comparative power consumption measurement was first
implemented. Moreover, a large part of the energy required for vehicle
production is obtained from methane gas, sourced from a nearby
landfill, with the help of highly efficient turbine generators.

The BMW 2 Series Convertible, making its North
American auto show debut in Los Angeles, is the successor to the BMW 1
Series Convertible, enhancing the hallmark strengths of the world’s
most successful open-top premium model in its class. In addition to

gasoline engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology and 320
horsepower, the market launch of the BMW 2 Series Convertible is also
available as a 228i, featuring an in-line four cylinder with BMW
TwinPower Turbo Technology and 240 horsepower. The 228i Convertible
is available with rear wheel drive or with BMW xDrive, the company’s

offers up to an 18 percent improvement in fuel economy and emissions
figures compared to its predecessor. The electrically-operated

creating the world’s first plug-in hybrid Sports Activity Vehicle. The
combination of a BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder combustion engine and
a 95-horsepower electric motor provides typical BMW performance, with
BMW xDrive further increasing the dynamics. At the same time, this
powertrain is impressively efficient. It has an average fuel
efficiency of approximately 62 mpg, which is unrivalled among vehicles
in this class, with CO2 emissions of less than 90 grams per kilometer
also setting new standards. Via the driving dynamics control switch,
different drive modes can be selected. In the fully electric mode,
which is free from local emissions, a maximum range of 19 miles is
possible – at speeds of up to 75 mph. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive
obtains its electrical energy from a (lithium-ion) high-voltage
battery, which is accommodated in a space-efficient manner under the
flat luggage compartment floor. This means that the room in the
vehicle can still be used flexibly, with an almost identical luggage
space volume. The high-voltage battery can be charged quickly and
conveniently using the BMW home charging station. Alternatively, it
can be replenished using any standard household power outlet or at a
public charging station.

the world of the luxury Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). BMW is using
the New York International Auto Show 2014 to present what it sees as
the logical next step towards bringing about a radical reduction in
fuel consumption and emissions in the SAV segment.

The BMW Concept X5 eDrive succeeds in fusing the familiar brand of
driving pleasure generated by the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive
system and a luxurious ambience enshrined within an interior offering
tremendous versatility of use with a plug-in hybrid drive system. A
conventional combustion engine works together in perfect harmony with
the cutting-edge BMW eDrive technology to produce the brand’s hallmark
sporty drive coupled with a significant reduction in fuel consumption,
making it an impressive example of the effectiveness of the
BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy. As a result, the car is
able to drive on electric power alone at speeds of up to 120 km/h
(75 mph) and for a distance of up to 30 kilometres (approx. 20 miles),
while recording average fuel consumption figures of less than
3.8 l/100 kilometres (more than 74.3 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle.

The concept study underwent a series of detailed refinements in
preparation for its appearance at the New York International Auto Show
and is equipped with a drive system comprising a 180 kW/245 hp
four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a
70 kW/95 hp electric motor likewise developed by the BMW Group. The
motor is supplied with power from a lithium-ion battery that can be
charged from any domestic socket and has sufficient capacity to enable
all-electric driving with zero local emissions for a range of up to
30 kilometres (approx. 20 miles). To ensure a particularly high level
of crash safety, the high-voltage battery developed for the
BMW Concept X5 eDrive is housed underneath the luggage compartment,
whose everyday usability remains virtually uncompromised thanks to the
40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest and an almost level loading floor.

In addition to the settings that can be activated using the
characteristic BMW Driving Experience Control switch, three driving
modes can be selected according to requirements and the situation at
hand: intelligent hybrid drive with an optimal relationship between
sportiness and efficiency (AUTO eDrive), pure electric and thus local
emission-free driving (MAX eDrive) and SAVE Battery to maintain the
current charge level.

Majestic poise at its most sophisticated: dynamic, flexible,
luxurious, plus zero local emissions if required.

Thanks to the BMW eDrive technology that has been specifically honed
for this model as part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the
concept car brings a whole new brand of poise and assurance to the SAV
segment. The formidable power reserves produced by its duo of drive
units, its outstanding levels of motoring comfort and the optimised
traction, handling stability and dynamic performance qualities over
any terrain courtesy of BMW xDrive technology all endow it with the
all-round sporty prowess typically associated with BMW X models, while
its landmark efficiency blazes a trail for its rivals to follow. The
ability to operate purely on electric power with zero local emissions,
especially in city traffic, puts a whole new slant on the SAV driving
experience that shows the shape of things to come. At the same time,
the plug-in hybrid drive concept does not impinge in any way on the
exemplary versatility offered by the Sports Activity Vehicle’s
interior or its distinctly luxurious ambience. In short, the
BMW Concept X5 eDrive shows itself to be supremely talented in every
way, deftly bringing major advances in cutting fuel consumption and
emissions into harmony with state-of-the-art functionality and
everyday practicality that never fails to impress.

A number of understated styling touches have been meticulously
incorporated into the exterior design to underline the groundbreaking
character of the BMW Concept X5 eDrive. The kidney grille bars, air
intake bars and the insert in the rear bumper are all finished in the
BMW i Blue colour developed for the BMW i brand, for instance,
creating a stunning contrast to the Silverflake metallic exterior
paintwork. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive also comes with body-coloured
wheel arches, specially styled roof rails, a connector for the
charging cable which – as on the BMW i models – lights up during
charging, as well as 21-inch light-alloy wheels in an exclusive,
streamlined design.

To make sure that the styling of the luxurious passenger compartment
echoes the highly sophisticated drive concept, light blue
double-felled seams adorn the Ivory White exclusive leather upholstery
covering the seats, door trim panels and dashboard. Further highlight
features of the specially designed interior include the Piano Finish
Black interior trim with blue accent strips, “eDrive” lettering
embossed in the front of the headrests, ambient lighting with a blue
hue, and an eDrive button that is also illuminated in blue. In the
luggage compartment lined in black velour, a transparent cover – again
illuminated in blue – affords a clear view of the high-voltage battery
for the electric motor.

BMW eDrive in a Sports Activity Vehicle: intelligent hybrid
technology promises outstanding efficiency and hallmark driving pleasure.

Electrification of the powertrain is a key component
of BMW EfficientDynamics technology and allows BMW to unlock
tremendous potential for reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The
BMW eDrive technology developed for this purpose comes in various
versions, each precisely tailored to the particular vehicle concept.
Both the BMW i3, the first all-electric production vehicle from the
BMW Group, and the soon-to-be-launched BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports
car are powered by BMW eDrive technology. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive
now follows in the tyre tracks of the BMW Concept Active Tourer
unveiled in 2012 by demonstrating how model-specific BMW eDrive
technology can be employed in plug-in hybrid models from the BMW core brand.

This is the first time that BMW eDrive technology has been hooked up
with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. The
BMW Concept X5 eDrive boasts the superior driving characteristics that
stem from the permanent and fully variable distribution of drive power
between the front and rear wheels. Regardless of the selected driving
mode, the drive power generated by the electric motor, the combustion
engine or the two units acting in unison is channelled swiftly and
precisely to wherever it can be converted into forward propulsion most
effectively. This allows the concept study to deliver all the
qualities that SAVs are renowned for – superb traction and optimised
handling stability in all weather and road conditions coupled with
enhanced agility when taking corners at speed – in remarkably
efficient fashion. The highly versatile and sporty driving abilities
of the BMW Concept X5 eDrive are accompanied by average fuel
consumption in the EU test cycle of less than 3.8 l/100 km (more than
74.3 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of under 90 grams per kilometre.

Both driving pleasure and efficiency in the BMW Concept X5 eDrive are
given an extra boost by an electric motor generating a maximum output
of 70 kW/95 hp together with the instantaneous power delivery that has
become a hallmark of electric drive units thanks to the high levels of
torque available from the word go. The electric motor variant
developed for the BMW Concept X5 eDrive as part of the
BMW EfficientDynamics strategy also boasts sporty performance
credentials, a compact design and optimised weight. The electric motor
alone is capable of propelling the BMW Concept X5 eDrive to a top
speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). With 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft) of
torque on tap from stationary, it gives the vehicle wonderfully
spontaneous response that translates into thrillingly dynamic
acceleration. It also works in tandem with the combustion engine to
boost its power significantly whenever a quick burst of speed is
called for. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive is able to complete the standard
sprint from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 7.0 seconds.

The task of ensuring the engine and electric motor team up together
to optimum effect is handled by the power electronics that were
developed by the BMW Group and apply the same basic concept used in
the BMW i cars. The power electronics combine a liquid-cooled inverter
for driving the electric motor, supplying energy to the onboard
electrical system from the high-voltage battery and for centralised
control of the hybrid-specific drive functions into a single
integrated system.

ECO PRO mode and all-electric driving:
BMW EfficientDynamics
à la carte.
As in other members of the current BMW production line-up, the
Driving Experience Control switch in the BMW Concept X5 eDrive can be
used to select not only the COMFORT and SPORT settings but also the
ECO PRO mode that fosters a particularly economical driving style.
This driving mode is programmed for highly intelligent hybrid
functionality, whereby the energy management system orchestrates the
interaction between engine and electric drive unit as the driving
situation changes in order to maximise efficiency. As a further
component of the BMW EfficientDynamics technology, a hybrid-specific
Proactive Driving Assistant has also been included, which works
together with the navigation system to allow the route profile, any
speed restrictions and the traffic situation to be factored in as well
for the purpose of drive management.

In addition to this, the driver also has the option of engaging the
all-electric driving mode by switching from AUTO eDrive to the
MAX eDrive setting at the push of a button. With the battery fully
charged, the vehicle is able to cover a distance of up to
30 kilometres (approx. 20 miles) on electric power alone, which means
zero local emissions. There is also a SAVE Battery mode, which can be
selected to deliberately preserve the battery’s energy capacity. This
might be the case, for example, if a longer journey is due to end with
a final stage through urban traffic that drivers wish to complete in
all-electric mode.

Everyday usability: flexible charging scenarios and impressive viability.
In order to capitalise as much as possible on the superior
efficiency of its electrified powertrain, the BMW Concept X5 eDrive is
designed as a plug-in hybrid, allowing its high-voltage battery’s
energy levels to be renewed from any domestic power socket, a special
Wallbox that can handle higher currents, or at a public high-speed
charging station. The Wallbox Pro is designed for installation in the
customer’s garage and offers complete ease of use as well as
exceptionally short battery recharging times, thanks to a maximum
charging rate of 7.4 kW. It is controlled by means of a
high-resolution touchscreen including proximity sensor, while LED
light strips provide an additional indication of the charge status.
The built-in load management facility governs the charging current in
accordance with the current draw on the household electricity supply.
The Wallbox Pro even makes it possible to use home-generated
electricity, such as that obtained from solar panels. There is also a
function for creating different user profiles and displaying the
respective charging histories. On request, the corresponding data can
be sent online, e.g. for billing purposes.

The high degree of flexibility drivers can enjoy when it comes to
choosing an energy source is given an added boost by the charging
cable that is carried in the vehicle. The battery unit is located
underneath the luggage compartment, so that there is only a small loss
of load capacity overall – the luggage compartment is able to hold two
large suitcases or four 46-inch golf bags. The SAV’s excellent
versatility – helped by the 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest – has
been fully retained, along with its ample sense of spaciousness and
the impressive level of comfort offered to the occupants of all five seats.

Intelligent connectivity for yet greater efficiency.

Innovative functions from BMW ConnectedDrive assist
with planning journeys in such a way as to maximise the amount of time
spent driving on electric power alone. In the BMW Concept X5 eDrive,
the current electric range thus appears as a numerical value in the
instrument cluster. Intelligent connectivity enables the vehicle’s
dynamic range display to constantly make allowances for any factors
affecting the range, such as traffic conditions, route profile and
driving style.

When route guidance is activated, the location of local charging
stations is added to the selection of points of interest shown on the
navigation map. Drivers are able to call up charging stations situated
along the planned route or at their destination, while the system
additionally notifies them of the charging time needed to fully
replenish the battery’s energy levels. Furthermore, information
graphics indicating the current operating status when engine and motor
work together in unison, the impact of the driving style on vehicle
efficiency and the fuel consumption history for selected periods of
time can be shown in the iDrive operating system’s Control Display,
along with other information.

Drivers are also able to view all information relating to the
battery’s charge level and electric driving range on their smartphone.
A Remote app from BMW ConnectedDrive that has been specially designed
with electric mobility in mind even enables them to control the
charging process from their phone. It also allows the vehicle to be
pre-programmed whenever it is connected to an electricity supply: the
heating and air conditioning systems can be activated remotely in this
way to get the passenger compartment to a pleasant temperature ready
for the start of the journey.

Press Contact: Kenn Sparks
Tel: +1-201-307-4467
E-mail: kenn.sparks@bmwna.com

Press Release,X5,Concept Vehicles & Design,BMW,F15,Product

achieving peak torque of 406 lb-ft and 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds (4.2

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe adds a fresh dimension
to one of the company’s newest model ranges. It combines the sleek
look and sporty character of the 4 Series Coupe with the functionality
provided by four-doors and a spacious, flexible luggage compartment.
The 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe arrives in the U.S. in early summer
of 2014 with two engine choices. The 428i Gran Coupe will feature
BMW’s award-winning 240 horsepower TwinPower Turbo 2.0-liter
four-cylinder, achieving peak torque of 255 lb-ft (0-60 mph in 5.7

300 horsepower TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline six achieving peak

Coupe will also be available at launch with BMW’s intelligent
all-wheel drive system. All versions will be offered in the U.S. with

The 2015 BMW ALPINA B6 xDrive Gran Coupe delivers
exceptional 0-60 mph in only 3.7 seconds. The 540-horsepower and 540
lb-ft output of the 4.4-liter ALPINA bi-Turbo V8 is channeled through
an 8 speed Sports Automatic Transmission with ALPINA Switch-Tronic and
BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system. Electronic Damping
Control and Active Roll Stabilization technology work together with
the fully variable torque distribution of the xDrive intelligent
all-wheel drive system. The seamless integration of chassis and
powertrain enables agile and neutral driving dynamics that meet the
highest demands for sportiness, comfort and all-weather traction. With
a top speed of 198 mph, the BMW ALPINA B6 xDrive Gran Coupe impresses
not only through its effortless and confident super-high performance,
but also with its finely balanced handling and smooth refinement. The

In the BMW Concept X5 eDrive, the innovative
EfficientDynamics drive technology BMW eDrive and the intelligent
all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive are united for the first time. The
combination of a BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder combustion engine and
a 95-horsepower electric motor provides typical BMW performance, with
BMW xDrive further increasing the dynamics.
Alternatively, it
can be replenished using any standard household power outlet or at a
public charging station.

The BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle expands on the
2010 second-generation BMW X3 with a new offer of BMW Advanced Diesel
power in the X3 xDrive28d that enhances efficiency while reducing
emissions. There will also be the first-time offer of the rear-wheel
drive BMW X3 sDrive28i for the U.S. market, providing a great consumer
entry point into the X3 family. The new xDrive28d will feature BMW’s
2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel 4-cylinder engine producing 180
horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque and accelerates from 0-60 mph in
just under eight seconds. The X3 xDrive28i features BMW 2.0-liter
TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine, producing 240 horsepower and 260
lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-60 in 6.2 seconds. The exterior and
interior design of the new BMW X3 received stylistic revisions that
add further depth to the vehicle’s practicality. The new BMW X3 will
go on sale in spring 2014 as a 2015 model. In the U.S., the base MSRP
will be $39,325 for the X3 sDrive28i, $40,725 for the X3 xDrive28i,
$42,825 for the X3 xDrive28d with BMW Advanced Diesel technology, and
$45,825 for the top-of-the-line X3 xDrive35i. Pricing includes $925
Destination & Handling.

electric and hybrid electric and constructed primarily from
lightweight carbon fiber. Coming to the market in 2014 Q2 and priced
at $135,700, the BMW i8 features an athletic design and a sleek, low
slung exterior and operates with extremely low fuel consumption (94
mpg) and emissions output. It is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph
in 4.2 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 11, 2014. . . At the
2014 Chicago Auto Show,BMW of North America today
announced that just four months after the new third-generation BMW X5
arrived in US showrooms, it will offer a full complement of BMW M
Performance Parts. BMW M Performance Parts are accessories now
available for a wide variety of current models that enable the
enthusiast to tailor their BMW to their individual tastes with a
sporty, track-inspired character.

As with M Performance Parts already available, carbon fiber plays a
prominent role with the exterior enhancements for the new X5,
including mirror caps, front splitter, rear diffuser and rear aero
flaps. A rear spoiler, high-gloss black kidney grilles and M
Performance rocker panel decals are also available. Double-spoke
21-inch wheels with performance tires complete the aggressive look.

The carbon fiber treatment continues in the interior with an
available Alcantara steering wheel with carbon fiber accents as well
as a carbon fiber cover for the gear selector lever. Available
stainless steel pedals add a finishing touch to the interior.

BMW M Performance Parts are not just about show. An M Performance
Power Kit is available for the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six in
the X5 xDrive35i. It adds 20 horsepower and 32 lb-ft of torque, bring
total output to 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. The kit also
provides sharper throttle calibration for a more direct connection
with the accelerator pedal. The available M Performance Exhaust,
available with chrome exhaust tips, provides the perfect complement to
the increased power.

Another compliment to the enhanced acceleration and responsiveness
provided by the M Performance Power Kit is the increased stopping
performance provided by the M Performance Brake Kit. The M Performance
Brake Kit for the new X5 includes six- piston calipers up front with
15.6-inch steel rotors. The rear brakes feature 15.2-inch rotors. The
M Performance Brake Kit is largely adapted from the previous
generation X5M.

There is one additional benefit for BMW M Performance Parts. When
they are installed at a BMW Vehicle Distribution Center before the
time of delivery, BMW M Performance Parts not only carry the full
four-year or 50,000 mile factory warranty, but they can also be fully
residualized in a lease from BMW Financial Services.

These latest accessories join an already extensive list of M
Performance Parts, available from an authorized BMW Center or online
at www.shopbmwusa.com.

The new BMW 4 Series Convertible, with distinct
design that sets itself apart from its BMW 3 Series cousins,
introduces new standards in terms of dynamics, elegance and
extraordinary driving pleasure – with the top up or down. Visibly
larger than the BMW 3 Series Convertible in width, track and
wheelbase, the BMW 4 Series Convertible boasts an unmistakable and
elegant silhouette – with balanced proportions when the top is down
and in the sleek look of the roofline when the hardtop is closed. In
addition to the enjoyment of the unrivalled open-air driving
experience at the push of a button, the BMW 4 Series Convertible also
impresses with exhilarating performance and sovereign handling. The
new BMW 4 Series Convertible will be offered in the US in 2014 Q1 as
both a 428i and as a 435i, with a base MSRP of $49,675 and $55,825,
respectively.

The new BMW i8 is the world’s first plug-in hybrid
2+2 super-car from BMW Group. It will join BMW i’s
growing lineup of visionary vehicles which are purpose built from the
ground up as electric and hybrid electric and constructed primarily
from lightweight carbon fiber. Coming to the market in 2014 Q2 and
priced at $135,700, the BMW i8 features an athletic design and a
sleek, low slung exterior and operates with extremely low fuel
consumption (94 mpg) and emissions output. It is capable of
accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds on the way to an
electronically governed top speed of 155 mph.

A fascinating combination of BMW X robustness and BMW Coupe
sportiness, the muscular and broad-shouldered BMW Concept X4
ispoised to continue the success story of the BMW X6 in a new
vehicle class. The BMW X4 Concept has eye-catching proportions, tight
contours and numerous high-quality details, producing an unrivalled
product character brimming with emotional appeal and sturdiness. In
hallmark BMW style, a longer wheelbase, relatively long bonnet, short
overhangs and a set-back greenhouse lend the car an undeniable
dynamism even when standing still. Available in 2014, the BMW Concept
X4 will be produced at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA.

The extravagant design of the BMW 5 Series Gran
Turismo represents the expression of sports performance and
luxurious long-distance comfort. With a modified front apron exuding
presence and solidity and its redesigned rear end creating a longer
and lower visual impression, the new 5 Series Gran Turismo combines
the striking elegance of a Sedan with the variable-usage interior of a
Sports Wagon model and the versatility of a Sports Activity Vehicle.
The 2014 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is currently available in the US as
a 535i for $60,925, 535i xDrive for $63,225, 550i for $68,825 and 550i
for $71,125.

The BMW i3 is the first fully electric vehicle from
BMW Group under BMW i’s growing lineup of visionary concept vehicles
constructed from the ground up primarily from lightweight carbon
fiber. With 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque hybrid-synchronous
electric motor, the BMW i3 is electrified by a 22-kWh lithium-ion
battery, good for 80-100 miles of emission-free driving. The BMW i3
will offer interior space comparable to the legendary BMW 3 Series on
a shorter overall body. Its 32.3-foot turning circle and a relatively
long wheelbase make it agile and engaging to drive, yet ideally suited
to driving in dense urban areas. Available in 2014 Q2, the BMW i3 will
have a base MSRP of $41,350 and the range-extender model will have a
starting MSRP of $45,200.

A new addition to showrooms, the BMW 4 Series Coupe
adds a new dimension to the qualities of the BMW 3 Series Coupe in
terms of aesthetics, dynamics and unbeatable driving pleasure. Built
on the tradition of the larger BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series Coupes,
and with a slightly longer wheelbase, wider stance and considerably
lower roofline than the BMW 3 Series Coupe, the “4” creates a strong,
athletic silhouette which exudes power even while stationary. New
aluminum trim on functional elements such as air intakes and vents,
door openers and exterior mirrors add elegance to the design. The BMW
Series 428i Coupe has a starting MSRP of $40,500, 428i xDrive Coupe
for $42,500, 435i Coupe for $46,000 and 435i xDrive Coupe for $48,000.

Offering notable advances over its predecessor, the new BMW
X5 sets new standards in powerful design, luxurious
spaciousness, cutting-edge versatility and efficient driving pleasure.
The X5 reveals an elegantly stretched silhouette, eye-catching swag
line over the athletically molded wheel arches, horizontal lines and
taut surfaces at the rear. With lower fuel consumption and emissions
through weight minimization, optimized air guidance and engine
technology, the X5 is the only vehicle in its segment available with
Active Steering and AdaptiveDrive, providing greater handling
capability and ride quality. The newly available rear-wheel drive 2014
X5 sDrive35i will start at $53,725 and the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i is
priced at $56,025. The 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d price is $57,525 and the
2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i will start at $69,125. The gas variants are on
sale now and diesel vehicles will be available in 2014 Q1. The BMW X5
is produced at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA.

Redesigned with fresh contour lines for the surround of the BMW
kidney grille and lower air intakes reinforcing the sporty appearance,
the 5 Series Sedan introduces functionality and
desirability at new levels. The 5 Series Sedan heralds an expansion of
its engine range, with more power and now with the choice of BMW
Advanced Diesel. The 5 Series Sedan is currently available as a 528i
priced at $50,425, a 528i xDrive at $52,725, a 535i at $56,025, a 535i
xDrive at $58,325, a 535d at $57,525, a 535d xDrive at $59,825, a 550i

its name implies, the K 1600 GTL Exclusive is an enhanced edition of
the award-winning K 1600 GTL that features stunning design and a host
of exclusive features that redefine what a Luxury Touring motorcycle
can be.

The slate of BMW Approved Apps will expand with the integration of
the Amazon Cloud Player. The new app integration
will give BMW users access to their entire music library from the web,
mobile device, connected living room device (like Roku, Samsung TV and
Sonos) and now from their BMW. Details and demonstrations will be
available during press days.

Spartanburg, S.C. – August 1, 2013…Production of the
third-generation BMW X5 officially began today with the manufacture of
dealer vehicles designed to generate excitement and sales in their
region. The first, new BMW X5 is a Mineral White M50d (six-cylinder
inline diesel engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology).
It features Exclusive Nappa Mocha leather interior and will be
exported to a dealer in Eastern Europe.

“Since 1999, the X5 has been a significant contributor to the
Spartanburg plant’s global success,” said BMW Manufacturing President,
Josef Kerscher. “Our team will continue to build the next-generation
X5 with the superior quality that our customers around the world have
come to expect from South Carolina.”

The third-generation BMW X5, creator of the Sports Activity Vehicle
segment and global market leader in its class, sets new standards in
powerful design, luxurious spaciousness, cutting-edge versatility and
efficient driving pleasure.

The new BMW X5 offers noticeable advances over its predecessor:

Three engine variants at launch: BMW X5 xDrive50i with a new
generation of the V8 petrol engine (330 kW/450 hp), BMW X5 xDrive30d
with revised six-cylinder in-line diesel unit (190 kW/258 hp) and
the BMW X5 M50d M Performance Automobile with tri-turbo six-cylinder
in-line diesel (280 kW/381 hp). In December 2013, the BMW X5
xDrive40d, BMW X5 xDrive35i, BMW X5 xDrive25d and BMW X5 sDrive25d
(with CO2 emissions of just 149 g/km) will be added to the range.

The design proportions of the third-generation Sports Activity
Vehicle are defined by a characteristic, evolutionary development of
body design from the predecessor model. The front-end features a
powerful, alert look, with twin circular headlight units extending
into the BMW kidney grill. The new X5 reveals an elegantly stretched
silhouette, eye-catching swag line over the athletically molded
wheel arches, horizontal lines and taut surfaces at the rear. The
vehicle’s aerodynamic properties integrate harmoniously into its
overall design language, including Air Curtains, Air Breathers and
Aero Blades for the rear window. Finally, the bumper’s X-shaped
contour lines clearly designate it as a member of the BMW X model family.

The new vehicle is engineered with a commitment to reducing fuel
consumption and emissions through weight minimization, optimized air
guidance, engine technology and the standard-fitted – and extremely
efficient – eight-speed automatic gearbox with additional BMW
EfficientDynamics technology. It features Auto Start Stop function,
ECO PRO mode including coasting function and Proactive Driving
Assistant. All models have the EU6 rating.

The new X5 is the only vehicle in its segment available with
Active Steering, a technology developed by BMW, and AdaptiveDrive, a
combination of Active Roll Stabilization and Electronic Damping
Control, which offers greater handling capability and ride quality.
It is also the first SAV fitted with run-flat tires as standard equipment.

The final second-generation X5 Sports Activity Vehicle was produced
at BMW’s South Carolina plant on Friday, June 28. The Titanium Silver
Metallic 4.4-liter, 400-hp V8 engine BMW X5 xDrive50i with Sand Beige
Perforated Nevada Leather and M Sport Package will become part of the
permanent BMW historic car collection. Between September 2006 and June
2013, the plant in Spartanburg produced 728,107 second-generation X5
models, making this model series the best-selling in the history of
the plant.

Since 1999, more than 1.3 million X5’s have been produced for global
customers. The X5 Sports Activity Vehicle is produced exclusively at
BMW Manufacturing Co. for distribution to more than 140 worldwide markets.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ –
June 24th, 2013
… It isn’t often that an automobile manufacturer gets
to launch an entirely new vehicle segment, but that’s exactly what BMW
did in 1999 when it introduced the world’s first Sports Activity
Vehicle – the BMW X5. Two generations and some 1.3 million vehicles
later, the BMW X5 is set to enter its third generation. As its
predecessors have done before, the all-new 3rd generation X5 will
again set new standards for luxury, versatility and – because it is a
BMW first and foremost – driving dynamics.

The newly available rear-wheel drive 2014 X5 sDrive35i will start at
$53,725 and the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i is priced at $56,025. The 2014
BMW X5 xDrive35d price is $57,525 and the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i will
start at $69,125. All prices include $925 destination and handling.
Newly-standard equipment for the X5 includes, but is not limited to,
BMW’s Auto Start-Stop system, BMW’s iDrive4.2 Navigation System with
Touchpad, 10 years of BMW Assist eCall service, 10 years of BMW
TeleService, BMW Apps, 40-20-40 split-folding rear seat, and now
standard Servotronic speed-sensitive power steering.

The all-new BMW X5 will offer a new model and a first for the
original Sports Activity Vehicle, the X5 sDrive35i, which marks the
first time that an X5 model has been offered with rear-wheel drive.
It, along with the X5 xDrive35i, will be powered by BMW’s multi-award
winning 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six. The V8-powered X5
xDrive50i will use BMW’s latest 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8. It
offers improvements in horsepower and torque, while at the same time
improving efficiency. These models will arrive in US showrooms in the
fourth quarter of 2013. Based on its popularity over the last several
years, a new BMW Advanced Diesel model will join the line-up a few
months later. The 2nd-generation X5 xDrive35d features a new 3.0-liter
TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder diesel engine. It will provide the
abundant torque for which BMW Advanced diesels have become renowned
while offering significant improvements in efficiency over its
predecessor. All models will be equipped with BMW’s latest 8-speed
automatic transmission. As was true of its predecessors, the all-new
BMW X5 will be produced exclusively at BMW’s production facility in
Spartanburg, SC.

Among the attributes that have set the BMW X5 apart in the automotive
landscape has been its unique blend of sporty, elegant exterior design
and luxurious, flexible interior ambiance. Those attributes have been
enhanced with an entirely new design, inside and out. For customers
looking to add an additional element of individuality to their new X5,
the Luxury Line, xLine or M Sport will be available, as will two
Interior Design Packages – Ivory White and Mocha.

Class-leading driving dynamics have been a hallmark for the BMW
Sports Activity Vehicle from the very beginning and the new X5 is no
different. BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive can be complemented
by Dynamic Performance Control as part of the optional Dynamic
Handling Package. The Dynamic Handling Package also includes Active
Roll Stabilization providing an additional edge to the X5’s sporty
handling attributes as well as Dynamic Damper Control and a rear-axle
air suspension. Adaptive M suspension, available as part of M Sport,
also includes Dynamic Damper Control and rear air suspension with more
sports-oriented suspension tuning.

Exterior design: dynamic flair that unmistakably marks it as nothing
but a
BMW X5.

Signature BMW design features combine with undeniable presence and
versatility to lend BMW X models their distinctive appearance. This
design language has been given a contemporary and eye-catching update
for the new BMW X5. The proportions of the 3rd-generation Sports
Activity Vehicle are once again defined by a short front overhang,
long wheelbase, upright A-pillars and the short distance between the
front axle and the leading edge of the front door. The three
dimensional design of the BMW kidney grille, set within the triangle
of the dual round headlights and front foglamps, and the bumper’s
X-shaped contour lines also identify it as a member of the BMW X model
family.

The new BMW X5 has a broad-set kidney grille that extends all the way
to the headlight clusters, which extend from the kidney grille all the
way into the front fenders. The hallmark four round headlights are
trimmed by LED accent rings. To provide a new look, the light rings
are flattened along the bottom edge and overlapped at their top edge.
Sweeping chrome inserts and the prominently three-dimensional design
of the lights underline the car’s sophisticated character. LED front
foglamps are standard. The optional Adaptive LED Headlights are
identified by the horizontal light sources in the center of the light
rings. All X5 models are equipped with standard Adaptive Xenon headlights.

The front apron, with side air intakes positioned far to its outer
edges, accentuates the wide track and planted stance of the new
BMW X5. The striking underbody protection elements also provide a nod
to its robust character. Drag-reducing Air Curtains make their debut
on a BMW X model. These vertical apertures guide the incoming air
around the wheel arches, where it creates a curtain of air over the
wheels before making a controlled escape through the Air Breathers in
the side of the front fenders.

The design of the flanks reflects the BMW X5’s power and sporting
ability. Precisely drawn lines rising up towards the rear build a
wedge shape draw attention to the dynamic character of the X5 and
break up the taut surfaces around the front fenders, doors and rear
wheel arches. The resulting light and shadow effect brings out the
athleticism and agility of the Sports Activity Vehicle.

The upright nose of the X5, with its forward-thrusting BMW kidney
grille, cuts an arresting figure from the side. The familiar BMW swage
line rises steadily from the headlight units, through the door pulls
and into the tail lights. It combines with the character line
extending from the upper edge of the Air Breathers and another, more
obvious crease above the side skirts to stretch the figure-hugging
surfaces of the car’s flanks powerfully to the rear.

The subdivision between the muscular body and the passenger
compartment, whose large windows lend it a light and spacious feel, is
clearly visible from the rear as well as from the side. Horizontal
lines on the two-section tailgate and around the rear apron emphasize
the width and robust stance of the new BMW X5. The thin,
three-dimensional LED light strips of the two-section, L-shaped rear
lights create a striking night-time look. Plus, the new BMW X5 is the
brand’s first model to feature Aero Blades. These black
air-channelling elements are contiguous with the roof spoiler and help
it to optimize the car’s aerodynamic properties.

The versatility of the new BMW X5 can be seen in the standard black
roof rails while the exterior paintwork can be ordered in a choice of
11 colors, among them the new Sparkling Brown Metallic as well as
Mineral White Metallic.

Interior design: high-quality materials, luxurious ambience,
cutting-edge functionality.

The interior of the new BMW X5 is both elegant and spacious. The
horizontal structure of the layered surfaces underlines the broad
sweep of the instrument panel and reflects the impressive amount of
space available on board. The three-dimensional design of the surfaces
also generates vibrant contrasts.

The interior materials selected for the new BMW X5 also play a role
in shaping the exclusive onboard ambience. The trim strip and accent
strip extend into the front door panels and are picked up again in the
rear door panels. Plus, the standard Poplar Wood Trim now sits atop a
high-gloss black surface, which is bordered on its lower edge by an
accent strip in Pearl Gloss Chrome.

For the US market, the standard BMW Navigation system, with touchpad,
includes a freestanding 10.2-inch Control Display Monitor. The
displays for the climate control and ventilation systems feature black
panel technology.

The Dakota leather seat surfaces are standard on the X5 xDrive50i and
can be specified as an option on six-cylinder models. Exclusive Nappa
leather with extended features can be specified as part of the
Interior Design Packages. Customers can choose from up to eight
upholstery colors.

Personalization: Luxury Line and xLine for the exterior.

Two new Lines for the exterior and interior of the new BMW X5 can be
ordered as an alternative to the standard specification, enabling a
new level of personalization. Each Line represents a harmonious blend
of design, colors and materials. M Sport is also an alternative for
those that wish to accentuate the sporting character of the new X5.
The Lines also encompass the new-look remote control key with
redesigned operating buttons.

xLine: presence and robustness

With stylistic underbody protection elements in brushed stainless
steel, newly designed air intake bars in matt silver and a rear trim
strip which, like the kidney grille bars, comes in matt silver, the
xLine adds distinctive touches to the exterior and emphasizes the SAV
character of the new BMW X5. This xLine also includes exterior mirror
bases and B-pillar and C-pillar trim in high-gloss black, as well as
Satin aluminum line exterior trim for the side windows. Roof rails are
available in a choice of Satin Aluminum or high-gloss finish. Also
included are a sport steering wheel, aluminum running boards and
19-inch Orbit Grey wheels – 20-inch Y-spoke wheels with mixed-sized
performance tires are available as an upgrade.

Luxury Line: modern and distinctive.

The Luxury line for the exterior includes stylistic underbody
protection elements and wheel arch surrounds painted in the respective
body color, black kidney grille bars with high-gloss chrome fronts,
T-shaped bars for the outer air intakes and louvers for the lower
aperture, plus a chrome trim strip for the rear apron and Chrome Line
Exterior adornments for the side windows. The exterior mirror bases,
B-pillars and C-pillars all feature high-gloss black trim. Roof rails
are available in a choice of Satin Aluminum or high-gloss finish. Also
included are a sport steering wheel and 19-inch V-spoke wheels –
20-inch Y-spoke wheels with mixed-sized performance tires are
available as an upgrade.

M Sport: provides the right look and feel for the
performance-oriented driver.

M Sport offers the performance-oriented driver a particularly dynamic
look and feel for the new BMW X5. Exterior touches include an
M-aerodynamic body kit, Shadowline trim, high-gloss roof rails and
19-inch M-Double Spoke light alloy wheels. 20-inch M-Double Spoke
wheels with mixed-sized performance runflat tires are available as an
upgrade. The interior includes an 8-speed sport automatic transmission
with shift-paddles, M-sport steering wheel, anthracite headliner, M
foot rest and door sills, Aluminum Hexagonal trim and sport seats.
Multi-contour seats can be specified as an alternative. An M Adaptive
Suspension may also be specified as an upgrade.

Two Interior Design Packages offer additional opportunities for personalization

In addition to the Lines, two Interior Design Packages – Ivory
White and Mocha – offer additional possibilities for personalizing
the new BMW X5.

The Ivory White Interior Design Package features
Ivory White Nappa Leather upholstery. The dashboard is covered in
Atlas Grey leather with contrast stitching for both the seats and
dashboard. It includes Fineline Oak Wood trim, although other trims
may be specified as an alternative.

The Mocha Interior Design Package features Mocha
Nappa Leather upholstery. The dashboard in this case is cover in Black
Nappa leather with contrast stitching for both the seats and
dashboard. The featured trim is Fineline Pure Wood Trim, although
other trims may be specified as an alternative.

Flexible interior, greater versatility with seating for up to seven.

With its luxurious ambience and enhanced ride comfort, spaciousness
and seating comfort, the new BMW X5 advances the standard set by its
predecessor. The newly designed seats for the driver and front
passenger ensure a high level of long-distance comfort and impressive
lateral support. Multi-contour seats, which are standard on the X5
xDrive50i, and sports seats are available as an option on six-cylinder models.

Comfort seats are now available for rear passengers as is seat
heating. The rear comfort seats come with bespoke upholstery, backrest
adjustment through 10 degrees and 3.1 inches (80 mm) of fore/aft
adjustment. The rear comfort seats can be specified either as an
individual option or together with the optional third row of seats.
The two additional seats are easy to access thanks to an Easy Entry
function and a grip plate by the C-pillar. They can be lowered
separately into the load compartment floor and come with inertia-reel
seat belts.

The folding backrest of the second-row seat can now be split
40 : 20 : 40, which allows load capacity to be increased in stages
from 23 cu.ft. – 66 cu.ft. (650 – 1,870 litres), based on EU
measurements. That represents up to seven percent more volume than its
predecessor. Additional storage compartments and door pockets which
can accommodate 1.5-liter bottles up front and one-liter bottles in
the rear contribute to the X5’s functionality both in day-to-day use
and on longer journeys.

The new BMW X5 again comes with a split two-section tailgate. The
lower element can be folded down horizontally to form a single level
with the load surface. Power tailgate operation for the upper section
is a standard feature.

Multi-award winning 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six
powers
new X5 sDrive35i and X5 xDrive35i
The new
X5 sDrive35i and X5 xDrive35i will be powered by BMW’s 3.0-liter
TwinPower Turbo inline-6 engine (internally known as N55). It develops
maximum output of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 300 lb-ft
available all the way from 1,200–5,000 rpm. The N55 engine was the
first BMW inline-6 to combine turbocharging, High Precision direct
fuel injection, and Valvetronic variable intake technology. It
features a single, mid-sized turbocharger with a “twin-scroll” housing
to boost performance and minimize response lag. Using Valvetronic for
the first time on a turbocharged inline-6 allows the engine to
“inhale” air more efficiently for combustion with virtually no delay
and with reduced pumping losses. The new X5 xDrive35i will accelerate
from 0 – 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than its
predecessor. Thanks to a lower curb weight and other EfficientDynamics
measures it is also expected to be more efficient (EPA mileage
estimates will be available closer to launch).

BMW X5 xDrive 50i features the latest TwinPower Turbo V8
The 4.4-liter V-8 engine (N63) that powers the current X5
xDrive50i receives an upgrade for its successor. The unique
“reverse-flow” engine, whose two turbochargers are positioned in the
V-area between the cylinder banks is well known for producing an
instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it a delight for the
enthusiast driver. This new version of the engine adds BMW’s
Valvetronic variable valve timing to the list of specifications. As a
result, the new version of the engine (N63TÜ) develops a maximum
445 hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm (a 45 hp increase), and makes peak
torque of 480 lb-ft between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm (a 30 lb-ft increase).
This newest TwinPower Turbo V8 powers the new
X5 xDrive50i from
0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, 0.4 seconds quicker than its
predecessor. Thanks to the addition of Valvetronic, lower curb weight
and other EfficientDynamics measures, the new X5 xDrive50i will also
see significant efficiency gains (EPA mileage estimates will be
available closer to launch).

New X5 xDrive35d benefits from the latest BMW Advanced Diesel
technology
The new BMW X5 xDrive35d features an all new
inline six-cylinder diesel engine offering an even better balance
between performance and fuel consumption than the outgoing diesel. The
3.0-liter engine, whose BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises VNT
turbocharging and common rail direct injection, now develops maximum
power of 255 hp and maximum torque of 413 lb-ft which is delivered
between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. In spite of the slight reduction in
output from its predecessor, the new BMW X5 xDrive35d has a 0-100 km/h
(62 mph) sprint time of 6.9 seconds (preliminary), making it just as
quick or quicker. With the latest technology and the addition of an
8-speed automatic transmission, the new model is expected to post
significant improvements in efficiency (EPA mileage estimates will be
available closer to launch). The new X5 xDrive35d uses the latest in
emission reduction technology. Lower nitrogen oxide limits are met
using a close-coupled NOX adsorber catalyst and an SCR catalyst with
urea (AdBlue) injection.

BMW EfficientDynamics: eight-speed automatic and ECO PRO mode with
new functions.

All models in the new BMW X5 lineup feature an eight-speed automatic
transmission, whose high internal efficiency, precision and short
shift times help to improve both efficiency and responsiveness. The
optional eight-speed sport automatic transmission, offers a new
“launch control” function, a high-precision traction control system
which allows engine power to be translated as efficiently as possible
into road speed when accelerating from a standstill.

In ECO PRO mode, the engine management, accelerator response and
transmission characteristics are systematically tailored to support a
particularly fuel-efficient, low-rpm driving style. At the same time,
ECO PRO mode also programs electrically powered functions like the
climate control, heated seats and heated exterior mirrors for
extra-efficient energy management. In ECO PRO mode, a coasting
function periodically decouples the engine from the rest of the
powertrain whenever the driver eases off the accelerator at speeds
between 30 – 100 mph without then applying the brakes. This allows the
new BMW X5 to coast without engine braking, for maximized fuel
efficiency. In conjunction with the standard Navigation system, highly
fuel-efficient ECO PRO navigation routes can be selected. When the
navigation system is activated, the Proactive Driving Assistant
function also tells the driver exactly when to ease off the
accelerator when approaching corners or a speed-restricted section of
road, in order to save fuel.

Along with the additional ECO PRO mode functions, the new BMW X5 also
comes with many other BMW EfficientDynamics features. These include
Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start/Stop, on-demand operation of
ancillary units, Electric Power Steering, and a variety of weight- and
drag-reducing features. Along with other measures, use of
ultra-high-tensile steels in the body structure, thermoplastics in the
front fenders, aluminum in the hood and magnesium in the instrument
panel support all help to reduce curb weight. Intelligent lightweight
design also means that the increase in standard equipment compared
with the previous model does not translate to increased vehicle
weight. The curb weights for the new X5 xDrive35i and X5 xDrive50i are
reduced by approximately 170 and 230 lbs respectively.

The BMW X5 also offers best-in-class aerodynamic design. Air
Curtains, the Air Breather system, vertical aero blades at the rear
window, air deflectors on the front wheel arches and a range of other
detail improvements reduce the drag coefficient (Cd).

Chassis: adjustable for driving condition and one’s mood.

Sports Activity Vehicles are a vehicle segment created by BMW. Their
combination of confident, sure-footed all-road traction and sporty but
comfortable driving dynamics has made them a global success. The new
BMW X5 once again raised the bar, incorporating refinements to the
all-wheel-drive system and chassis technology.

Using the standard Driving Dynamics Control switch on the center
console, the drive settings can be matched to the requirements of the
moment or to different driving situations. The COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+
and ECO PRO modes, which can be selected at the press of a button,
allow the driver to customize the accelerator response
characteristics, the power steering characteristics, the
characteristics of the automatic transmission and also Dynamic Damper
Control, if equipped. On vehicles with the Dynamic Handling Package,
the characteristics of the active roll stabilisation system and the
Dynamic Performance Control can also be tailored.

The suspension packages available for the new BMW X5 cater to
individual requirements in terms of comfortable or sporty driving
styles. With the Dynamic Damper Control + automatic rear self-leveling
suspension option, electronic control logic adapts the damping
characteristics to changing road conditions and driving situations.
Two different damping modes can be selected using the Driving Dynamics
Control switch. The same functionality is also provided by the
Adaptive M suspension, available as part of M
Sport. In this version, SPORT or SPORT+ modes offer extra-firm
suspension and damping characteristics.

Finally, the Dynamic Handling Package maximizes both
comfort and dynamics. This option combines the components of Dynamic
Damper Control, automatic rear self-leveling suspension, Dynamic
Performance Control, and Active Roll Stabilization.

The new BMW X5 features standard Electric Power Steering. Active
Steering is available as an option. In addition to varying the power
assist, Active Steering also adjusts the steering input required to
turn the wheels in relation to vehicle speed. This reduces the
steering effort required when parking and provides precise response
and feedback at high speed. The electromechanical parking brake with
Auto Hold function is once again standard on the new BMW X5. The
powerful braking system offers stable and consistent braking
performance even under heavy braking, assisted by Dynamic Stability
Control (DSC). Among other functions, the DSC system includes the
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC),
Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) and the
Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X). Other functions include Brake
Assist, the Brake Standby feature, Start-Off Assistant, Fade
Compensation, the Brake Drying function, trailer stability control and
Hill Descent Control (HDC).

BMW xDrive in the new BMW X5: intelligent all-wheel drive, with
optional Dynamic Performance Control.

All models of the new BMW X5, except the X5 sDrive35i, are equipped
with xDrive full-time intelligent all-wheel drive, which actively
manages the drive power split between the front and rear wheels at all
times. The latest version of the xDrive power divider boasts optimized
efficiency and a three pound (1.4 kg) reduction in weight. xDrive’s
control logic uses information about road speed, wheel speeds,
steering angle and accelerator position to accurately interpret both
the driver’s intentions and what the vehicle is actually doing, and
then apportions power front-to-rear in order to get as much power as
possible to the road. BMW xDrive maximizes both traction and stability
whatever the road and weather conditions, and also offers improved
cornering dynamics by working to help counteract oversteer or
understeer before the driver is even aware of the need.

If xDrive is combined with Dynamic Performance Control, the drive
power split can be even more finely controlled. The electronically
controlled DPC is integrated into the rear differential. In
combination with xDrive it takes handling dynamics and directional
stability to new levels. Dynamic Performance Control, which is
available as part of the optional Dynamic Handling Package, seamlessly
varies the drive power split between the rear wheels (torque
vectoring), with significant benefits in terms of steering response
and road-holding at all speeds. The stabilizing action of Dynamic
Performance Control remains in effect even when the driver lifts off
the accelerator while cornering.

All-wheel-drive models come with a new xDrive status display in the
control display boasting 3D graphics. This feature shows real-time
information about body roll and pitch. A compass display is also shown
in the instrument cluster.

More innovations to assist the driver and underpin services: the BMW
ConnectedDrive range for the new BMW X5.

A large range of BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems and
mobility services are available for the new BMW X5. They improve
active safety, convenience and the infotainment experience and offer
best-in-class standards of intelligent interaction between the driver,
vehicle and external environment.

Safety: Active Driving Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop
& Go.

The new Active Driving Assistant safety package
includes Lane Departure Warning, which alerts drivers
to an imminent unintended lane departure, and a pedestrian and
collision warning system with braking function, which
detects vehicles in front and, at speeds up to 37 mph (60 km/h), also
detects pedestrians who are on a potential collision course with the
vehicle. If a hazard is detected, visual and audible warnings are
given and the brake system is primed in order to reduce stopping
distance. At speeds up to 37 mph (60 km/h), moderate “hazard” braking
is applied to reduce vehicle speed and alert the driver to a critical situation.

The ACC Stop & Go enhances comfort and safety in
slow-moving and stop-and-go traffic. This system maintains a safe
following distance at any speed up to 130 mph (210 km/h). A
combination of a front camera and full-range radar sensors registers
preceding traffic or stationary vehicles. If the driver fails to react
to a warning of an imminent frontal collision, ACC Stop & Go +
Active Driving Assistant automatically brakes the vehicle all the way
to a standstill if necessary.

BMW Assist eCall, which is standard
including a 10 year subscription, includes enhanced
Automatic Collision Notification, with automatic vehicle location and
BMW’s groundbreaking Urgency Algorithm. The current generation of this
system relays important information to the BMW Call Center in the
event of a crash, such as vehicle position (accurate within feet),
chassis number, vehicle model, vehicle color and data from the onboard
sensors. The system also detects how many people are traveling in the
vehicle, which airbags were activated and the intensity of the impact.
Jointly developed with the William Lehman Injury Research Center in
Miami, BMW’s Urgency Algorithm synthesizes all the available crash
data in order to provide first responders with a prediction of the
likelihood of severe injury. Arming first responders with this
information has the potential to save precious minutes in a critical situation.

BMW ConnectedDrive technologies also enhance safety at night.
Adaptive Xenon Headlights with turning lights are
standard. Adaptive LED Headlights and the
Automatic High Beams, which automatically dim the
high beams in the face of oncoming traffic, are available. Night
driving can be made even safer with the available by BMW Night
Vision. This system now detects warns the driver not only
about pedestrians but animals as well. The system relays a real-time
video image to the control display which shows people, sizeable
animals and other heat-radiating objects even if they are outside the
headlight beam, and provides a warning if there is a collision risk.

Comfort: innovative driver assistance systems and unique services.

In the new BMW X5, the full-color BMW Head-Up
Display, which projects important information onto the
windshield, now includes even more additional information. When
needed, telephone contact lists and entertainment programs can also be
projected into the driver’s direct field of view.

Also new, and due to become available for the X5 by December 2013, is
the latest generation of the BMW Parking Assistant.
This helps the driver look for suitable parallel parking spaces and
precisely maneuvers the vehicle into a parking space, not only by
steering but also by operating the accelerator and brake pedal and
selecting the appropriate gear. When the system has been activated at
the press of a button, the new BMW X5 can park itself automatically in
a selected parking space. Ease of maneuvering is enhanced by the
Rear-View Camera, which is standard on the X5
xDrive50i,and the Surround View system, which now
provides a 360-degree view of the vehicle and its surroundings on the
control display. The Panorama View front and rear monitoring function,
provides a better view of cross-traffic when merging from an exit with
poor visibility.

Other features which are available for the new BMW X5 include the
Speed Limit Info system, which shows any speed
limits or overtaking restrictions for a particular road in the
instrument cluster. Also available, the optional Active Blind
Spot Detection system assesses the traffic situation on
multi-lane roads in order to prevent critical situations when pulling
out to overtake. When performing an intentional lane change, the
driver is warned by a visual signal and a steering wheel vibration if
another vehicle is hidden in the driver’s blind spot behind or
alongside the BMW X5.

The BMW Assist Convenience Plan offers Concierge Services which the
BMW ConnectedDrive customer can use to make hotel reservations, search
for addresses and telephone numbers or check opening times, to name
just a few examples. The plan also includes critical calling, enabling
the driver to get help placing a call if their cell phone is not
accessible or functioning. It also includes a dictation function that
converts spoken notes into text, which can then be forwarded as an SMS
or email message. Advanced
Real Time Traffic Information is standard, supplying
drivers with precise real-time traffic information and congestion reports.

Infotainment: connectivity for office, entertainment and social media applications.

Based either on a comprehensively integrated smartphone or on a
built-in SIM card, BMW ConnectedDrive offers access to a wide range of
mobility services and web-based services for office, travel and
infotainment applications. A hands-free system with USB
port is standard on the new BMW X5. The BMW ConnectedDrive
Office functions allow emails, appointments, contact lists, calendar
entries and notes to be shown on the control display.

BMW Apps is standard on the new X5. BMW Apps enables
the driver to be more seamlessly connected than ever before using
their Apple iPhone. Vehicle compatible apps like the BMW Connected
App can be downloaded from the iTunes store, allowing customers to
access Twitter and Facebook updates, listen to internet radio from
around the world with Web Radio, and access their calendar all using
the BMW iDrive controller and screen. The Last Mile feature helps
users receive directions for walking from their BMW to their final
destination and then finding their way back to their parked vehicle.
Additionally, popular services like Pandora, MOG, Stitcher and Aupeo
can be easily and safely streamed into and controlled by the BMW
vehicle interface today. Other services like Audible, Glympse,
Rhapsody and TuneIn will be integrated soon. The flexible design of
BMW Apps allows unprecedented integration of smartphone functions,
taking the in-car integration of iPhone, entertainment and online
functions to a whole new level. BMW Apps adopts the familiar BMW
display and controls to ensure that all functions can be operated
comfortably, simply, safely and intuitively while minimizing driver distraction.

Extensive standard specification and high-end optional
equipment for more driving enjoyment.

The exclusive driving experience in the new BMW X5 is reflected not
only in the luxurious interior but also in the extensive standard

The vehicle that launched an entire segment set to enter its
3rd generation again setting the standard for luxury, versatility
and driving dynamics

Woodcliff Lake, NJ –
May 29, 2013 6:00pm EDT/3:00pm PDT
… It isn’t often that an automobile manufacturer gets
to launch an entirely new vehicle segment, but that’s exactly what BMW
did in 1999 when it introduced the world’s first Sports Activity
Vehicle – the BMW X5. Two generations and some 1.3 million vehicles
later, the BMW X5 is set to enter its third generation. As its
predecessors have done before, the all-new 3rd generation X5 will
again set new standards for luxury, versatility and – because it is a
BMW first and foremost – driving dynamics.

X-shaped contour lines also identify it as a member of the BMW X model family.

And now, for the first time, the tailgate can
be closed as well as opened using the remote control and, at the touch
of a button, from the driver’s seat.

A new function, the Traffic Jam
Assistant, is due to be incorporated in this package from
December 2013 production onward. At speeds up to 25 mph (40 km/h),
this function not only controls following distance but also keeps the
vehicle on track. The Traffic Jam Assistant keeps the vehicle in the
center of its lane by providing active steering input.
