Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 18, 2026… The BMW 3 Series is the essence of the BMW brand. For five decades, this icon has stood for sporty driving pleasure, unmistakably attractive design and consistent progress. A legacy to which every generation of the BMW 3 Series is committed. The new, fully electric BMW i3 enhances the familiar character of the BMW 3 Series with additional, unique features. 

As the next model in the Neue Klasse, it represents a technological quantum leap into a new era. The first all-electric BMW 3 Series launches as the BMW i3 50 xDrive, which has an electric motor on both the front and rear axles. The combined system power output is

463 hp[1] while maximum torque is 476 ft-llb. The highly efficient sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, together with the new BMW Panoramic iDrive and Heart of Joy, delivers driving pleasure on a level never experienced before. With BMW Symbiotic Drive, the assisted driving experience is also entering a new era. The BMW i3 also stands for a modern interpretation of the hallmark design features of a BMW Sedan.

As a representative of the new design language, the new BMW i3 is immediately recognizable as a BMW 3 Series – assured, dynamic, and intelligent. The hallmark BMW sporty silhouette proportions are reflected in the new 2.5-box design. Notable features are the long wheelbase, the greenhouse that slopes towards the rear and the short overhangs. The four-eyed face is familiar, yet still new. The BMW grille and twin headlights merge into an innovative light signature, creating a powerful and expressive unit. The rear end, featuring horizontal rear lights, further highlights precision and technological progress. The boldly flared wheel arches emphasise the sporty, wide stance of the new BMW i3.

Sportiness and driving pleasure are invariably embedded in the DNA of the BMW 3 Series. The new BMW i3 maximizes the capabilities of the all-new EV architecture, offering impressively precise, effortless, and assured handling. The Heart of Joy high-performance computer shapes the BMW i3 driving experience. Its responses are ten times faster than in previous systems. Together with three other superbrain high-performance computers, the Heart of Joy forms the centrepiece of the new software and electronics architecture.

The new BMW i3 stands out for its excellent suitability for long journeys. Its estimated range is up to 440 miles (estimated range of up to 440 miles according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test procedure standards). DC charging capacities of up to 400 kW also drastically reduce charging times. Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology provides the prerequisites for this rapid progress. It comprises highly efficient electric motors, 800-volt technology, and new high-voltage batteries with new cylindrical cells. The cell-to-pack design used enables high energy densities at pack level and a flatter high-voltage battery. The BMW i3 also features the bidirectional charging functions Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid charging functions.

The BMW i3 will be manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Munich, which is the home plant of BMW. For more than a hundred years, the plant in Milbertshofen, in the north of Munich, has been producing premium vehicles. Over the last four years, the plant has seen significant modernization: Alongside a new body shop, a cutting-edge vehicle assembly area incorporating logistics space has been constructed. The new buildings are in their final stages of expansion. Production of the new BMW i3 will start in these halls from August 2026. The first vehicles will be delivered from autumn this year. One year later, the production portfolio will be switched to exclusively fully electric vehicles of the Neue Klasse. The plant conversion includes a large number of modernization measures.

Design. The core of the brand reinterpreted: modern, timeless, and unmistakeable.

In line with BMW's new design language that debuted with the iX3, the i3 embodies a contemporary take on the distinctive design elements synonymous with the BMW brand. At the same time, the BMW i3 combines future-oriented dynamics with the hallmark proportions of a sporty BMW sedan. The DNA of the BMW 3 Series, which has been successful for decades, is immediately apparent in its modern 2.5-box design.

Precise lines and striking surfaces characterise the clear, reduced external appearance of the BMW i3. The modern interior has a sporty and inviting design. Advanced digitalization shapes the user experience just as fundamentally as the hallmark BMW driver orientation.

2.5-box design with distinctive surfaces, long wheelbase and short overhangs. 

The outline of the new BMW i3 maintains the classic, sporty proportions typical of BMW. With a modern 2.5-box design, the i3 is unmistakably identifiable as a BMW. 

The appearance is defined by the long wheelbase, the striking surfaces, and the short overhangs. The look of the design is both modern and dynamic. Short overhangs and powerfully shaped wheel arches emphasize the sporty stance. A distinctive design feature is the greenhouse, set back from the main structure. In combination with the flared wheel arches, this creates a powerfully athletic shoulder surface. The precise character line, positioned low on the body surface, brings the BMW i3's visual center of gravity closer to the road. 

Concealed window seals ensure a direct, harmonious transition between the glass surfaces and the bodywork. When the BMW Digital Key Plus is near, the flush-mounted door handles automatically extend. 

Familiar, yet new: The front of the BMW 3 Series – a symbiosis of geometry and light. 

The front end of the new BMW i3 presents the face of the Neue Klasse in a distinctive, modern form. The iconic BMW grille and twin headlights seamlessly integrate with the front sensors, creating a unified visual element that exemplifies the harmony of geometry and light. With meticulous precision, they effectively highlight the broad design of the vehicle. 

The light signature, arranged horizontally, spans nearly the whole front. Two daytime driving lights on the left and right with integrated turn indicator function create a new, modern look for the hallmark BMW four-eye face. The optional Iconic Glow exterior package further enhances the visual depth effect of the BMW grille. Precise contour lighting emphasizes the attractive look.

Occupying its spot in the "valley" of the sculptured hood, the redesigned BMW roundel sits above the grille. The front is dynamically inclined towards the road in a shark-nose design, thus emphazising the overall sporty character.

BMW Iconic Glow exterior package for customizable lighting effects. 

The new BMW i3 comes to life with its light animation as soon as the driver approaches the vehicle. The Welcome Light Animation begins on the exterior of the vehicle and continues in the interior. The Welcome and Goodbye Animations vary depending on the equipment level. The optional BMW Iconic Glow exterior package offers three impressive lighting animations. Balanced, Relaxed and Excited are available. Customers can individualise the Welcome Light Animation of their BMW i3 to their personal taste.

Powerful rear, horizontal light signature.

Similar to the front of the vehicle, the rear of the new BMW i3 features a contemporary and dynamic design language. The athletic shoulders with strongly inset greenhouse are a characteristic feature of the rear end. The prominently flared wheel arches emphasize the width of the sedan and its broad stance on the road. Located at the lower rear, a diffuser element emphasises the dynamic qualities of the BMW i3.

Strongly horizontally aligned rear lights feature a new three-dimensional light signature and extend far into the prominent shoulders. Two light elements per side reinterpret the familiar L-shaped BMW rear lights in a new, abstract form. At the same time, they underlscore the width and the distinctive character of the BMW 3 Series. The BMW roundel is again located in the "valley" between the rear lights. 

Expressive: New M Le Castellet Blue metallic paint finish. 

A total of eleven different exterior colors will be available at the market launch of the new BMW i3. The new metallic color M Le Castellet Blue is exclusive to the range. Solid, frozen, and metallic finishes are also available. 

Interior: An inviting experience space – driver-oriented, digital, and modern. 

The interior of the BMW i3 brings the design language of the Neue Klasse to life with clear intensity. The interior design is dynamic, airy, and modern and stands for optimal driver orientation, redesigned user interaction, and a harmonious interplay of geometry, light, and sound. Digital and real content merge through the coordinated design of the ambient light and the graphics on the central display and the BMW Panoramic Vision.

The Free-Cut Design Central Display is angled slightly towards the driver. The lines of the instrument panel flow horizontally on both sides into the dynamically designed door panels. This creates an enveloping wrap-around effect for the passengers, which continues throughout the interior. The standard panoramic roof with climate comfort glass, in combination with the large window areas, creates a feeling of space flooded with light.

Driver orientation: Precise and intuitive. 

The BMW Panoramic Vision and the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display project driving-relevant information directly into the driver's line of sight. This eliminates the need for cockpit displays behind the steering wheel, which is now completely redesigned. For the first time in a BMW 3 Series, it has a center spoke in the upper section. In addition to distinctive thumb rests for improved ergonomics, it has multifunction buttons for intuitive operation. This follows the hallmark BMW principle of "Hands on the Wheel, Eyes on the Road". An M Sport steering wheel with a flattened, dynamic design and spokes at the four and eight o'clock positions is optional as an alternative to the sports steering wheel.

The Free-Cut Design Central Display equipped with matrix backlight technology is also positioned right next to the steering wheel, angled towards the driver for even more direct driver orientation.

The BMW i3 offers customers comprehensive options for personalization in the areas of lighting, sound, displays and drives via My Modes. 

Multifunction seat and BMW M Sport seat optional. 

The new BMW i3 comes with sporty and elegant seats that provide a high level of comfort and secure lateral support. Multifunction seats are available as an option. BMW M Sport seats are also available, which feature a sporty, expressive design and distinctive side bolsters for more secure lateral support.

The BMW i3 features electrically operated door latches front and rear. The center console between the driver and passenger seats includes a storage area with inductive charging function, the gear selector, and physical buttons for parking brake and hazard warning lights. 

Choice of numerous interior designs. 

The BMW i3 features precisely coordinated interior designs with its selection of materials and hues. The Contemporary version is available with Veganza upholstery in Agave Green, Digital White, Castanea, and Black. The leather-like, high-quality material is also used in the BMW M Design World, here in Black combined with M Performtex. In the BMW Individual version, exclusive black Merino leather provides luxurious seating comfort.

Sporty style with the M Sport package. 

The M Sport package is available as an option for the new BMW i3. Among other things, it includes the M Aerodynamic package, a sports steering wheel, exterior mirror projection with M logo, and unlocks the choice of blue calipers for the M Sport brakes.

Display and operating system, digital user experience. Modern digital technology meets hallmark BMW driver orientation.

For decades, BMW vehicles have been regarded as leaders in intuitive operation and exceptional ergonomics. This also applies to the latest BMW Panoramic iDrive display and operating system with BMW Operating System X in the new BMW i3. The entire system adheres to one principle: the right information, in the right place, at the right time. It is controlled by ergonomically optimized analog and digital control elements. Many of the BMW i3's innovations in the area of display and control technology are protected by patent applications.

BMW Panoramic Vision: Focus on driver orientation. 

At the heart of the display and operating system is the BMW Panoramic Vision. This is a newly developed type of display in which information is projected onto a specially coated area in the lower part of the windscreen that stretches from A-pillar to A-pillar. The content shown in this area is always visible and forms the visual basis of the entire display and operating concept. Key driving information is displayed on the left-hand side, clearly structured and in the driver’s line of sight, without restricting their view of the road ahead. The contents shown in the central and right-hand areas of the display can be personalized and are visible to all occupants.

BMW 3D Head-Up Display: Animations enable spatial perception. 

The optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display integrated above the BMW Panoramic Vision projects selected content directly into the driver’s line of sight for their exclusive benefit. This display enables particularly precise spatial perception – for example in the case of navigation instructions, or information from the driver assistance system. The contents of the BMW 3D Head-Up Display and the BMW Panoramic Vision are perfectly coordinated and complement each other, for a consistent, clearly structured display experience.

Free-Cut Design Central Display. 

The 17.9-inch Central Display in Free-Cut Design is integrated into the BMW Panoramic iDrive as a further essential control element. It features advanced matrix backlight technology with a resolution of 3,340 x 1,440 pixels, for a brilliant display that is easy to read in all lighting conditions. The specific shape in the Free-Cut Design allows for ergonomically optimal positioning, and thanks to advanced menu structure with QuickSelect, it offers comfortable, simple and intuitive operation via touch. There is a menu on the Central Display containing widgets that can be moved to the BMW Panoramic Vision by drag and drop. Up to six widgets can be freely arranged in this way to enable quick access to frequently used functions. Using the multifunction steering wheel, further contents and submenus of the widgets can be displayed in the BMW Panoramic Vision.

New multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech operating elements. 

The multifunction steering wheel employs the Shy Tech philosophy, meaning buttons are only illuminated when the corresponding functions are available. The controls for driving assistance and parking functions are located on the left side, while controls for infotainment functions such as telephone or media player are on the right. These functions can be operated via a special control panel that provides haptic feedback. This enables drivers to control key functions safely and accurately without needing to take their eyes off the road. The keys’ logical arrangement supports intuitive use and contributes significantly to the overall ergonomic design of the system.

Customizability as a key feature of the system. 

Contents, widgets and displays are individually configurable, allowing them to be adapted to personal preferences. Users can select colors, display schemes, and background images to create a personalised digital experience. There is a wealth of options enabling users to customise the user interface design in Personal Mode in line with their own preferences, enabling advanced individualisation of displays, interactions and vehicle-related settings. Further My Modes such as Sport, Efficient and Silent add to the range of personal setups available to customers. 

The BMW ID opens the door to the customisable driving experience with BMW Panoramic iDrive. Up to seven different persons can sign in to the vehicle with their BMW ID, allowing them to enjoy every drive to the full with their individual settings. The personalization process begins with initial registration in the vehicle, which is done by scanning a QR code in the Central Display using a smartphone. The personal BMW ID is then added to the car and the user is guided through the main steps of initial setup, which can also be started prior to vehicle handover via the My BMW App if desired. At the same time, the vehicle is automatically stored in the My BMW App along with the corresponding profile. All personal vehicle settings, such as the configuration of the BMW Panoramic Vision, media favorites, recent destinations, seat settings with entry and exit configuration, and much more, are now automatically available for every journey provided the profile has been linked to a BMW Digital Key Plus or physical key. Before setting off, a message greeting the customer by name will automatically appear in the Central Display – along with their personal profile picture, if desired.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. 

The multimodal operating logic of BMW Panoramic iDrive combines touch, haptic and voice-based interactions. A key role is played by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the operating concept in the new BMW i3. It enables the control of numerous vehicle functions, navigation destinations and media contents using natural language, without the need for defined voice commands. The self-learning voice assistant can be activated in the usual way with the prompt “Hey BMW” or by pressing a button on the steering wheel’s right-hand control panel. Following initial setup, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is positioned in the center of the BMW Panoramic Vision by default and is always able to react appropriately to the specific context. If desired, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can make proactive suggestions based on usage behavior and more. This intelligence is further enhanced by the BMW Operating System X, which considers significantly more contexts, such as driving situations, environmental analysis, and interior recognition.

The addition of Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology¹ to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant increases the range of functions even further. The integration of Amazon Alexa+ into the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant marks a technological quantum leap focused on added customer value. 

The AI technology used is a Large Language Model (LLM), a generative AI that understands language and is capable of formulating its own responses. This makes for more dialogue-oriented voice interactions; it enables intuitive and intelligent exchanges and supports access to external knowledge bases, cloud-based services and media contents as well as the control of vehicle functions. Linking the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to an Amazon account allows the user to search for and stream music, access the latest news, and use a wide range of other content with ease.

The interplay between BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW 3D Head-Up Display, Central Display, and multifunction steering wheel – controlled by BMW Operating System X – creates a consistent, clearly structured display and operating concept. Physical and digital operating elements combine to create a unified user experience that is consistently designed with driver orientation and ergonomics in mind.

The BMW Digital Key Plus becomes the preferred vehicle key. 

This means that smartphones and smartwatches from all leading manufacturers (incl. Apple, Samsung, Google) can be easily set up to work as a vehicle key. Ultra-wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth technology are used to enable smartphone and vehicle to communicate with one another at close range. The UWB technology allows the user’s location to be pinpointed extremely precisely while also ensuring the highest possible vehicle access security (certified according to the Car Connectivity Consortium’s standard).

The BMW Digital Key Plus has further benefits to offer in addition to highly convenient vehicle access. Customers can share the digital key with others easily and securely using a messaging app, while defining individual roles and rights at the same time. It also enables the use of additional functions via the smartphone wallet, such as remote operation of the trunk lid.

BMW Operating System X with high update and upgrade capability.  The BMW Panoramic iDrive software is based on BMW Operating System X. It serves as an intelligent platform for the display and operating system and is consistently designed for a software-defined vehicle approach. The architecture is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and offers a high level of update and upgrade capability. As a result, the system remains up-to-date in the long term and can be continuously expanded with new functions and digital services. The BMW Operating System X meticulously manages all aspects of interaction and guarantees that information is consistently presented in a context-sensitive manner aligned with the situation.

Superbrain high-performance computers and new architecture. Compute faster and update more flexibly.

At the heart of the new architecture are four superbrain high-performance computers. Each is assigned a core function in the new BMW i3: The Heart of Joy primarily manages driving dynamics, while separate computers are dedicated to automated driving and parking, infotainment, and essential and comfort functions like vehicle access and climate control. They offer up to 20 times higher computing power compared to previous BMW models.

Electronics in four zones: More efficiency, less weight. 

The four-zone electrical architecture reduces the complexity of the cable harnesses. In addition, the new BMW i3 uses Smart eFuses instead of classic fuses. This intelligent and flexible power protection combined with the zonal architecture enables shorter and thinner cables, saves weight, reduces energy consumption thanks to intelligent power distribution and increases overall vehicle efficiency. 

Over-the-air updates allow for continuous improvements. 

The new BMW i3 will continue to receive new functions, optimized performance, or AI-supported features via software updates long after purchase. With its superbrains, zonal electronics architecture and smart software, the new BMW i3 combines classic driving pleasure with digital intelligence, creating a unique symbiosis between human and machine. All future BMW models will feature the electronics and software architecture developed for the Neue Klasse.

Driving experience.  Heart of Joy and BMW Symbiotic Drive for a new dimension of driving pleasure and the joy of assisted driving.

The new BMW i3 brings sportiness, preciese handling, and long-distance comfort into the age of the Neue Klasse and make full use of previously unattainable potentials of electromobility. The Heart of Joy defines the brand-new driving experience – delivering greater accuracy, improved assurance, and heightened agility. In combination with the advanced suspension technology of the BMW i3, this creates a completely new dimension of driving pleasure. Multiple driving and parking assistance systems, which operate in synergy and securely with the driver while maintaining the unique BMW character, provide increased safety and convenience for everyday driving.

Heart of Joy: Ten times faster than previous systems. 

As one of four superbrains, the Heart of Joy, together with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control driving stack, forms the high-performance control unit of the BMW i3. Control systems in vehicles have a long tradition at BMW. It began back in 1979 with the first use of an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in the BMW 7 Series. 

The Heart of Joy controls drive, brakes, some steering functions, and recuperation. It works at a new level and responds ten times faster than previous systems. The result is exceptionally effortless and assured handling. This allows the BMW i3 to navigate corners precisely and with a light touch for maximum accuracy. The Heart of Joy reduces the number of necessary control interventions. The resulting cornering behavior is more consistent and predictable, which contributes to an even greater feeling of safety.

Soft-Stop: The smoothest stopping process in BMW history. 

The electric motors' precise control ensures the new BMW i3 decelerates smoothly without any jerks or braking noise. Soft-Stop ensures an unparalleled stopping process. 

In everyday driving, the recuperation brake takes over almost all braking operations in the BMW i3. The conventional brakes are only used during very sporty driving or emergency braking.

Suspension: Sporty and comfortable. Optional Adaptive M suspension. 

The new BMW i3 is distinguished by its hallmark high driving dynamics paired with long-distance comfort. It takes advantage of the architecture, which is uniformly designed for electric mobility. The new, flat high-voltage battery enables a low center of gravity. As standard, the BMW i3 has a suspension with stroke-dependent shock absorbers. In addition to the two-joint spring strut front axle, it features a new five-link rear axle. Front and rear anti-roll bars with highly preloaded bearings are used for even more dynamic handling. An Adaptive M suspension is available as an option in the i3.

BMW Symbiotic Drive ensures seamless interaction between the driver and the driver assistance systems. 

The optional Level 2+ driver assistance systems in the BMW i3 are designed for seamless interaction between assistance and driver inputs. The aim is not attaining the highest possible level of automation in every situation, but a safe driver assistance experience that offers maximum benefit and is always controllable. As a result, the driver always remains involved in an interplay of human and artificial intelligence. This allows acceleration, steering, or braking even when driver assistance is engaged, without instantly causing a deactivation of the assistance system. The clear operating logic and displays in the BMW Panoramic iDrive ensure that assisted driving behavior is intuitive and can be influenced at any time. The symbiotic interplay of driver and vehicle can also be experienced with active safety functions such as Lane Departure Warning. The driver's intent is inferred from steering inputs and the direction of vision, so that the system assists with warning and steering intervention only when the driver unintentionally drifts off his own lane or an impending collision is detected.

Standard Driving Assistant Plus takes the strain out of steering and braking. If desired, it controls the speed and distance from the vehicle in front and helps the driver to keep the vehicle comfortably in the lane. The system can recognize posted speed limits and adjust the speed before curves, roundabouts, and turns. All driver and parking assistance functions can also be activated digitally in the BMW ConnectedDrive Store at a later stage.

Drive and battery. Technological quantum leap: Sixth-generation electric drive with round cell high-voltage battery.

The sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology comprises a new drive with a fundamentally new high-voltage battery concept and 800-volt technology. The new development called Gen6 offers significantly longer ranges, even faster charging, up to 400 kW DC charging capacity and bidirectional charging functionality.

In addition to advanced, highly efficient electric motors, it includes fundamentally new high-voltage batteries with cylindrical cells. Compared to Gen5, the range is increased by 30 percent. The new BMW i3 has a projected range of up to 440 miles (estimated range of up to 440 miles according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test procedure standards) while charging speeds are 30 percent faster. 

The new cylindrical cells used in the high-voltage battery have a diameter of 46 millimetres and a height of 95 millimetres. They have a 20 percent increase in volumetric energy density compared to the prismatic cells used in Gen5. 

Cell-to-pack design enables high energy density at pack level. 

The cells are integrated directly into the high-voltage battery without modular construction or structural elements. This cell-to-pack design enables high energy densities at pack level and saves weight and costs. 

In addition, the combination of cell design and cell-to-pack construction paves the way for the flat design of the Gen6 high-voltage battery. This is an in-house development and – starting with the cell and ending with integration into the vehicle – the result of BMW’s expertise in battery technology built up since 2008.

Pack-to-open-body construction allows for flat design. 

Thanks to the pack-to-open body concept, the battery housing in the new BMW i3 also functions as a structural component. The chassis has an open floor, which is closed by installing the high-voltage battery. The housing cover thus assumes the function of the vehicle underbody. 

The omission of this usual underbody saves weight and, combined with the high-voltage battery design, paves the way for the flat and aerodynamically efficient design of the BMW i3. Another advantage: The torsional rigidity of the body also benefits from the pack-to-open-body construction, which has a positive effect on driving dynamics. 

Energy Master: The highly intelligent control center. 

The electrical and electronic components for the high-voltage battery can be found in the Energy Master positioned on top of the high-voltage battery. The Energy Master, developed in-house by BMW, provides electricity to the electric motors and the vehicle electrical system. It is also the interface for all data from the high-voltage battery. It ensures intelligent, efficient, and safe battery operation.

Two highly efficient electric motors with EESM and ASM technology. 

The BMW i3 50 xDrive has an electric motor on the front and rear axles. Together, they provide a system output of 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque.

An electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) designed for the 800-volt architecture is integrated into the rear axle, the primary drive axle. This EESM forms the centerpiece of the Gen6 drive technology of the Neue Klasse. It is based on a stator, which generates a rotating magnetic field by means of three-phase alternating current, and a rotor, which has electrically excited electromagnets. This design makes the EESM fundamentally different from motors with permanent magnets, as the magnetic field in the rotor can be flexibly regulated. This ability makes it possible to reduce the magnetic field at low load and thus avoid losses. On the other hand, particularly strong magnetic fields can be generated under high load. This results in high torque and constant power output up to maximum motor speed.

The entire system is controlled by an inverter, which converts the direct current of the battery into the required alternating current and at the same time ensures that the rotor is excited as well as all control and monitoring processes. As a result, EESM is always operated at optimum efficiency. Its technology distinctly sets it apart as a unique selling point in the competitive landscape. Its efficiency and performance development are among its most important advantages.

The EESM in the BMW i3 50 xDrive is supplemented by an asynchronous motor (ASM) on the front axle. The ASM works on the induction principle and is a compact and lightweight addition to the EESM. The ASM differs fundamentally in its rotor design: Instead of magnets or electrical excitation, the rotor consists of aluminium rods that are connected via short-circuit rings. The necessary torque is generated by induced currents that occur when there is a difference in speed – known as slip – between the stator field and the rotor. The ASM is particularly robust and resistant to heat and its compact, sustainable construction uses only iron and aluminium. The combination of both types of motors enables a technological quantum leap: Together, they reduce energy losses by 40 percent, reduce the weight of the drive system by 10 percent, and reduce manufacturing costs by 20 percent compared to the already powerful previous generation.

The EESM of the new BMW i3 is manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Steyr in Upper Austria, and the high-voltage battery at the BMW Group plant in Debrecen in Hungary. The BMW Group's Landshut plant is contributing the Energy Master. 

BMW Charging. Revolutionary advances in range and charging speed combined with innovative charging solutions.

As a further innovation, the new BMW i3 will have bidirectional charging functions. The energy stored in the battery can thus be used not only for the drive and the electrical consumers in the vehicle, but also for the following applications:

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): This turns the new BMW i3 into a mobile power bank that provides electricity directly from the high-voltage battery. For example, to operate an electric barbecue on a weekend trip or to charge the battery of an e-bike with up to 3.7 kW. 

Vehicle-to-Home (V2H): Bidirectional charging turns the BMW i3 into a home energy storage system: With Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) in conjunction with the BMW Wallbox Professional and a photovoltaic system, vehicle charging costs and electricity costs throughout the household are reduced. For this purpose, excess energy from the photovoltaic system is temporarily stored in the vehicle battery and is later fed back into the house when there is no solar power.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): V2G allows the BMW i3 to be integrated into the public power grid and feed energy from the vehicle's high-voltage battery back into the system. Individual control using the My BMW App is simple and transparent. Customers always have full control over their current and desired charge levels. Battery life is safeguarded by intelligent protection mechanisms.

Simple, convenient, digital: Charging becomes an experience.

The BMW i3 features many innovations for convenient and fast charging on the go. This includes, for example, the route optimized for charging planned according to individual criteria with automatic battery preparation for faster DC charging. Or the convenient charging stop with an intelligent charging flap that opens automatically and Plug & Charge for automatic payment authentication at charging stations.

Route planning optimized for charging: The BMW Maps navigation system calculates a route optimized for charging, including charging stops, if the destination is outside the current range.

The driver determines the charging status at which charging stations and the destination should preferably be reached and which charging station providers should be preferred. By using AI, the system learns from past charging processes, for example, the realistically expected charging power, the susceptibility to faults or the exact location data of individual charging stations and includes the optimal charging station in the planning of the route. For full transparency, the customer receives information about the current occupancy status, the number of charging stations and plug types. The expected duration and costs of charging stops are shown in advance based on the individually stored charging rates. The vehicle and the My BMW App synchronize current information while driving; this allows the passenger to check the route on the go and adjust it if necessary. The availability of restaurants, playgrounds, restrooms, or shopping facilities near the charging stop is also shown. 

Battery preparation for faster DC charging: The battery preparation ensures that the high-voltage battery is brought to the optimal temperature before a charging process at a DC charging station. This increases charging capacity immediately after plugging in and shortens the charging time. When the driver actively routes to a DC charging station with BMW Maps, the BMW i3 automatically conditions (heats or cools) its battery. Alternatively, the function can be activated manually via the Central Display or the My BMW App. The current status of the battery temperature and the time remaining for battery preparation can be viewed at any time in the BMW i3 vehicle status and in the My BMW App.

Intelligent charging flap: The charging port is located on the rear right side of the new BMW i3. It is possible to open the charging flap manually by simply pressing, but this is no longer necessary. Because the intelligent charging flap of the new BMW i3 opens automatically as soon as the customer's charging request is detected. One of the triggers for opening is AI-supported: If the customer walks towards a known or learned charging point, the movement path reveals the charging intention, whereupon the flap opens. If no charging cable is connected, the charging flap closes automatically – as it does after the charging process is complete or when the vehicle is ready to drive.

NACS charge port standard: The new BMW i3 will be fitted as standard with an NACS (North American Charging Standard) compatible charging port. This will provide i3 owners access to the vast Supercharger network, while a standard CCS (Combined Charging System) adapter will preserve access to other providers from coast to coast, thus ensuring that i3 owners are never far from a provider no matter where the journey is taking them.

Sustainability in the product.  Holistic concept for conserving resources and reducing CO ₂ e emissions.

As with the BMW iX3, BMW is also taking a holistic approach to sustainability with the new BMW i3. The focus is on decarbonization along the entire life cycle – from product development, supply chain to production and use phase. 

The BMW i3 is thus making a contribution to achieving the CO₂e goals that the company has set for 2030, 2035 and 2050.

The CO₂e advantage is already apparent after 1–2 years of use. Depending on the drive variant, annual mileage, and source of the electricity used for charging, the new BMW i3 50 xDrive achieves a CO₂e benefit over a comparable model with an internal combustion engine1 after just 1–2 years of use.

Decarbonization in the supply chain. 

A key starting point for reducing CO₂e emissions is targeted decarbonization along the supply chain. Renewable energy, increased use of secondary materials, and product and process innovations contribute to a significant reduction in emissions in the supply chain of all drive variants.

The result of this consistent approach can be proven by the emissions reductions achieved: CO₂e emissions in the supply chain were reduced by around 33 percent even during the product development of the BMW i3.

Innovative materials and technologies in construction. 

The "Design for Circularity" principle is also systematically applied in the new BMW i3. This approach entails an enhanced utilization of secondary materials, strategic selection of materials, and the optimization of dismantling capabilities. 

In the front bumper of the BMW i3, 30 percent recycled plastic is used in the trim. In addition, the variety of materials in the entire bumper without attachments has been reduced from 15 to 7 materials compared to its predecessor (BMW 3 Series). Thanks to the extensive use of a plastic especially suitable for recycling, the proportion of recyclable plastics was increased from approximately 46 percent in the predecessor model to approximately 85 percent. This creates the basis for the recovery of high-quality recycled plastics from the vehicle.

Use of secondary materials in the new BMW i3.

The new BMW i3 consists of a total of around 30 percent of secondary materials1: The proportion of secondary materials in the aluminium cast components of the new BMW i3 swivel bearings and hub carriers is 80 percent; the cast aluminium rims consist of 70 percent secondary aluminium. The housing of the Gen6 motor also consists of approximately two-thirds recycled aluminium.

The Gen6 battery cells of the BMW i3 high-voltage battery pack use a proportion of secondary materials for cobalt, lithium and nickel. Energy from renewable sources is also used in the production of anode and cathode material as well as in cell production. Compared to a previous Gen5 cell in the BMW i4, the CO₂e footprint in the cell supply chain was reduced by around 33 percent per Wh. Another example of the innovative use of materials and secondary materials is the engine compartment cover and the storage compartment under the hood of the BMW i3. The base material consists of 30 percent recycled marine plastic. This is post-consumer material made from used fishing nets and ropes. The starting material of the yarn for the textile of the headliner and the A-pillar in the BMW i3 consists of 100 percent recycled material.

In line with the sustainability goals of the BMW Group. 

BMW’s commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and to Net Zero by 2050 at the latest is an integral part of the holistic 360° sustainability approach, which is anchored in the corporate strategy. The company has set itself ambitious, scientifically derived CO₂e targets for the coming years. For example, BMW intends to reduce its CO₂e emissions by a total of at least 40 million tons of CO₂e in 2030 and by around 60 million tons of CO₂e by 2035. This means an additional reduction of around 20 million tons of CO₂e in addition to the existing 2030 target.

It epitomizes sporty driving pleasure in the premium midsize class and has made significant contributions to design, driving dynamics, and technological innovations in this segment time and again across seven model generations. The extensive revisions already introduced for model year 2022 in the areas of design, powertrain, digitalization, and equipment are heightened with a fresh package of updates that take the 3 Series’ visual appeal and cutting-edge modernity to new levels. New chassis tuning further enhances the balance between sporting capability and comfort. And on the topic of digitalization, BMW Operating System 8.5 provides the basis for more intuitive and comfortable operation – via the upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect – and for extended navigation functions including Augmented View.

These technological advances are accompanied by new design details and features for the exterior and interior. The new BMW 3 Series Sedan will be launched worldwide with a production phase-in in August 2024. Models for the US market will be produced at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico.

The BMW 3 Series has embodied driving pleasure, elegantly sporty design, and sustained technological progress ever since its debut in 1975. More than 20 million examples of the BMW 3 Series have been sold around the world to date, with the current, seventh generation now accounting for almost three million of these alone.

Exterior design, interior, and equipment; Progressive aura, refined ambience.

The spectrum of exterior colors for 2025 includes two new colors: Arctic Race Blue metallic and Vegas Red metallic. To take personalization even further, customers may choose from two new BMW Individual shades: Frozen Pure Grey metallic and Frozen Portimao Blue metallic.

Vehicles with the M Sport package (optional on 330i models, standard on M340i models) will be fitted with new 19-inch M alloy wheels in double-spoke design (Style 995M) in either a bi-color or Jet Black finish. Alternatively, new BMW Individual 19-inch alloy wheels in Y-spoke design (Style 1038i) with a bi-color finish are optionally available across all models.

New design elements and features have also been introduced in the interior, further highlighting the cockpit’s clean, uncluttered, and tech-forward appearance. Drivers are presented with one of two new steering wheel designs. BMW 330i models come standard with a new two-spoke wheel with a polygonal rim. M340i models and 330i models equipped with the M Sport package feature a new three-spoke flat-bottomed M steering wheel with a subtle stripe at top dead center – black on 330i M Sport models, red on M340i models. Both of the newly designed steering wheels have illuminated multifunction buttons and gearshift paddles.

Selectable light moods, premium materials. 

The interior lighting now includes cascade lighting integrated into the trim around the new central vents. It can be adjusted for color and brightness according to personal preference, with users able to select from nine colors. Their choice of color and brightness settings are stored as part of their profile. The functionality of the interior lighting also includes an atmospheric Welcome and Goodbye Animation and light signals indicating certain scenarios such as an incoming phone call or an open door.

Revisions have also been made to the range of interior trim elements. Fineline Light open-pored fine-wood trim is standard in the new BMW 330i, while the M340i gets M Aluminum Rhombicle as standard. Ash Grey open-pored fine-wood trim, Aluminum Fine Brushed, and, on the M340i, Carbon Fiber are all optionally available.

The use of high-quality materials also allows distinctive touches to be included throughout the interior to enhance its modern and premium character. For example, customers can specify Galvanic controls – which adds a unique luster to the window switches, door lock button, and air vent adjustment stalks. The optional Sensatec dashboard now has a more refined surface and decorative stitching in a contrasting color.

Engines with 48V mild hybrid technology. Powerful and efficient.

The new B58B30M2 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engines in the 2025 M340i models feature a new 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) technology for sharper power deliver and greater efficiency. The auxilliary electric drive of the 48V starter generator can provide 11 hp of boost to the TwinPower Turbo engine, resulting in a maximum system output of 386 hp @ 5,200-6,250 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque @ 1,900-4,800 rpm.

The engine is paired with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission to propel the BMW M340i  from 0-60 mph in only 4.4 seconds, or 4.1 seconds when fitted with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The engine’s surge of power is accompanied by an exhilarating soundtrack from the M Sport exhaust system. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.
 
The B48B20O2 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine in the 2025 330i models also benefits from 48V mild hybrid technology, as well as incorporation of the Miller cycle combustion process, a redesign of the intake ports and combustion chambers, and innovations in the areas of camshaft control, injection, ignition system, and exhaust gas routing. The TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine produces 255 hp @ 4,700-6,500 rpm, and 295 lb-ft of torque @ 1,600-4,500 rpm.

Chassis offers an even better blend of sportiness and comfort. 

The chassis technology of the new BMW 3 Series also benefits from rigorous development work. The blend of sporting flair and ride comfort for which the 3 Series is renowned has been further refined across all models with a series of targeted updates. A stiffer mounting connecting the rear dampers to the body is just one of the measures used to achieve this.

With these developments, drivers will enjoy a notable increase in comfort across all driving situations – regardless of the road surface conditions or the selected driving mode – without any loss of dynamic capability. The new 3 Series handles with even greater overall precision, composure, and controllability. The steering effort has also been reduced in Comfort mode to achieve greater steering ease in everyday driving.

BMW Operating System 8.5 and innovative digital services.

The latest version of the BMW iDrive with QuickSelect is fitted in the new BMW 3 Series, enabling vehicle functions to be controlled more intuitively and providing access to digital services. It is now based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and features a new home screen and QuickSelect rapid-access tech, bringing an improved menu structure that takes its cue from consumer electronics devices.

The BMW iDrive home screen now continuously displays the navigation system’s map view in a large format or another individually selectable view. The system’s QuickSelect functionality permits a flatter menu structure, enabling the driver to select the desired function directly from the home screen without any need to enter submenus. 

On the driver’s side of the control display, there is a bar of widgets for accessing media, phone, and other functions by swiping vertically. Swiping a widget horizontally displays additional related information and settings options. The widget bar can be customized by installing new widgets, removing existing ones, or changing their arrangement. And the home icon at the lower edge of the control display makes it possible to return to the home screen from any application with a simple tap. Icons for direct access to the climate control menu, All Apps menu and, if activated, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can also now be found next to the home icon.

The introduction of the latest-generation BMW iDrive with QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 8.5 in the new BMW 3 Series simplifies operation of the ventilation and climate control functions. An operating concept focused on touch control and natural language enables a further reduction in the number of physical buttons and controls in the cockpit. Temperature selection, fan speed, seat heating and – if specified – steering wheel heating can now be adjusted on the BMW Curved Display or by voice command via the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. New adjustment controls for the air vent grilles in the center of the instrument panel and on the driver’s and front passenger side of the cockpit allow the intensity and direction of airflow to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

Enhanced navigation with BMW Maps and Augmented View. 

The BMW Maps navigation system forming part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus in the new 3 Series makes it easier to input destinations and can offer additional information while driving. New features include better usability of filters, a flatter menu structure with touch buttons shown directly on the map view, and proactive route recommendations. 

The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional adds not only the BMW Head-Up Display, but also the Augmented View function. This supplements the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of the driver’s view on the information display or control display and augmenting it with contextual real-time information. At confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route. 

Individual user experience with the BMW ID and My BMW App. 

The arrival of BMW Operating System 8.5 makes it even easier to personalize the user experience in the BMW 3 Series by simplifying the process for linking the vehicle with the BMW ID and My BMW App. Customers initially sign in to the vehicle with their BMW ID by scanning a QR code with their smartphone. The personal user profile is then imported automatically. Synchronizable settings are loaded and the key detected in the vehicle is associated with the BMW ID. 

At the same time, the vehicle is added to the My BMW App – the universal interface that serves as a gateway to BMW’s digital ecosystem. It provides information on the vehicle’s status, its remaining range and any servicing and maintenance requirements.

Besides this, the My BMW App also lets users send destination addresses from their smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system for route planning, or access the online BMW ConnectedDrive Store where upgrades and additional functions for the new BMW 3 Series can be initiated, purchased or extended over the air. The “My Trips” feature including Efficiency Trainer and monthly review provides the user with valuable data and evaluations for distance travelled, consumption and average speed, as well as offering helpful tips for driving efficiently.

Optimum connectivity with Personal eSIM and 5G mobile standard. In addition to the vehicle’s built-in mobile SIM, customers can also use the Personal eSIM included in the new BMW 3 Series as standard. Linked to the user’s BMW ID rather than the car, this fully integrates the vehicle into the customer’s digital ecosystem. The Personal eSIM makes it possible to use the communications and connectivity functions covered by a separate mobile phone contract from the car with ease – even in situations where the smartphone itself isn’t actually in the vehicle. 

The Personal eSIM enables use of the 5G mobile communications standard. It also allows data streaming via a WiFi hotspot by means of a connection to the vehicle’s exterior antenna. All phone functions can be operated with the BMW iDrive system or the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

BMW’s latest eDrive technology, advanced driver assist, safety and infotainment systems allow the new 2021 BMW 330e and 330e xDrive sedans to deliver exhilarating driving experiences while lowering emissions and allowing for purely electric driving.

Over the past 40 years, no single model has embodied the concept of the Ultimate Driving Machine better than the BMW 3 Series Sedan.  Modern design, agile handling, exceptional efficiency and innovative equipment features, all signature characteristics of a BMW, have been raised to a higher level through tireless engineering and testing. The BMW 330e and 330e xDrive Sedans expand on not only the core of the BMW 3 Series range (of which over 15 million units have been sold worldwide) but also the heart and passion of the BMW brand.

New 4-cylinder PHEV drivetrain with XtraBoost

The new BMW 330e and 330e xDrive Sedans utilize an intelligently controlled powertrain consisting of an electric motor, a high voltage battery pack and an internal combustion gasoline engine to enhance the performance driving experience of the 3 Series.

A 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo engine developing 181 hp @ 3,800 – 6,500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,450 – 3,600 rpm is complemented by an electric traction motor developing 107 hp at 3,170 rpm and 77 lb-ft of torque @ 0 – 3,140 rpm. The combined power output is 288 hp and 310 lb-ft or torque with XtraBoost.

A high-voltage 34 Ah / 12 kWh gross (9.09 kWh net) lithium-ion battery module located underneath the rear seats provides the storage capacity for electric-only and performance oriented driving.

The estimated EPA purely electric range for the BMW 330e Sedan is 22 miles (20 miles for the 330e xDrive Sedan). The estimated MPGe rating for the 330e Sedan is 75 (67 for the BMW 330e xDrive).

A brand-new feature in the new BMW 330e and 330e xDrive Sedans is XtraBoost, which enhances power and performance when the throttle is depressed to the kick down position. Available in SPORT mode, XtraBoost offers an immediate 40 hp power increase for up to 10 seconds.

The BMW 330e Sedan’s electrified drivetrain allows it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds (5.7 seconds for the 330e xDrive Sedan). Both models feature an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph when equipped with all-season tires. When equipped with summer performance tires, the 330e Sedan reaches a top speed of 142 mph (140 mph for the 330e xDrive model).

Purely electric driving up to 87 mph

In the HYBRID driving mode, the new BMW 330e and 330e xDrive Sedans can operate at speeds up to 68 mph on electric power alone, an increase of 19 mph over its predecessor. Emissions-free and fuel-free ELECTRIC mode allows driving up to 87 mph, up from the previous 75 mph. The standard Active Protection for Pedestrians features an exterior speaker system to generate an unmistakable sound created specifically for electrified BMWs when operating in electric-only mode at speeds up to 20 mph.

8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission

The new BMW 330e and 330e xDrive Sedans are equipped with a standard 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission. The latest version of this quick-shifting sport automatic transmission features a new, optimized hydraulic control system and shorter gearing for improved response and acceleration.

Intelligent connectivity enables the sport automatic transmission to adapt its shift strategy according to the route and driving situation. Working with the standard navigation system, the 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission uses data from this system and from the optional Active Cruise Control system’s radar sensor. This makes it possible for the transmission to avoid unnecessary gear changes when negotiating a series of fast corners and, when approaching a vehicle ahead for example, to shift down early in order to use the engine braking to scrub off speed.

This functionality comes courtesy of the electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case which links up with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system and constantly adjusts power transmission – precisely and in a fraction of a second – in response to the driving situation. In this way, any tendency of the vehicle to oversteer or understeer greatly reduced.

The system’s rear-biased set-up helps ensure the new BMW 3 Series Sedan retains the exhilarating driving experience drivers expect from a BMW. Sending more drive power to the rear wheels under normal driving increases agility when cornering. In situations which do not require all-wheel drive, the efficiency of BMW xDrive is increased by directing all the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. The weight of the system has also been reduced, while optimized oil supply increases internal efficiency.

Chassis Technology: Sportiness and comfort

The body structure and chassis of the new BMW 330e and 330e xDrive Sedans was developed with a focus on enhanced driving dynamics, agile handling characteristics, high-precision steering and superior braking performance. The foundations for these attributes are provided by a low center of gravity, by the increase in the front and rear track compared with the predecessor model, by significantly increased camber values for the front wheels and by the substantial increase in the stiffness of the body structure and suspension mountings.

In addition to these measures, new shock absorber technology has been developed for the BMW 3 Series Sedan. The lift-related dampers are part of the car’s standard chassis and make a major contribution to the unique balance of sportiness and comfort – unrivalled by any other manufacturer – which defines the character of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. The car’s handling and steering dynamics can be fine-tuned with a series of precisely matched chassis options. The functionally coordinated interplay of suspension, steering, tires, brake system and differential lock makes sport driving an effortlessly enjoyable experience.

Driver Assistance Systems

The BMW 330e and 330exDrive Sedans also assume a pioneering role when it comes to assistance systems designed to ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions – such as traffic jams – and lends a helping hand in awkward maneuvering situations. The new model generation offers a far wider choice of standard and optionally available systems which enhance specific aspects of comfort and safety.

Camera images and the data gathered by radar and ultrasonic sensors are used to monitor the vehicle’s surrounding area and either alert the driver to hazards or minimize the risk of an accident by means of corrective braking and steering. The optional Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go braking function helps to make life easier on long-distance journeys by automatically accelerating or slowing down the car to maintain the desired speed set by the driver. The set speed can be imported directly from the optional traffic sign recognition system’s display. The Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function goes even further to help the driver by not just maintaining the chosen cruising speed but also keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead. The system is operational in a speed range from 0 – 130 mph and is able to brake the vehicle to a standstill, if necessary. The maximum length of time that can pass before the car starts off again automatically has been extended to 30 seconds. In order to determine the ideal moment to pull away, the system’s sensors now register not only the vehicle immediately ahead, but the one in front of that as well.

The new 3 Series PHEV models come standard with the Active Guard, Frontal Collision waring with City Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning, the latest version of which also alerts the driver when a cyclist is detected. Depending on the situation, the system can bring the vehicle to a halt to either avoid a collision or minimize its consequences. The optional Driving Assistant includes Blind Spot Detection systems, which operate from 44 – 130 mph and from 12 mph to the car’s top speed respectively, and help the driver to guide the car back onto the correct path with a steering input. The Driving Assistant’s remaining functions also include Rear Collision Protection and Cross-Traffic Alert, thereby reducing the risk of a collision when reversing into roads that are obstructed from the driver’s view. To help it keep an eye on what’s happening behind the car, Cross-Traffic Alert is able to employ both the radar sensors in the rear bumper and the rear view camera.

Driving Assistant Professional: the ultimate in comfort and safety

The optional Driving Assistant Professional offers the full complement of assistance systems for comfortable and safe motoring. Underpinning it all is a trifocal camera co-developed with Mobileye, working in conjunction with a front facing radar. This complete package makes its systems available in an exceptionally wide range of situations. In addition to all the components of the Driving Assistant and the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, it also includes the Steering and Lane Keeping Assistant, which takes its cues from road markings and vehicles driving ahead and works together with the driver to help keep the vehicle in the detected lane.  A dedicated button on the steering wheel’s left-hand spoke ensures the systems are easy to operate. Pushing it once activates both the Active Cruise Control and the Steering and Lane Keeping Assistant.

The Driving Assistant Professional also features the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Avoidance. As well as emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to vibrate, active side collision avoidance also uses a steering input to help avoid collisions. Rounding off the Driving Assistant Professional’s extensive list of functions are the Evasion Assistance, which now also reacts to pedestrians and Cross-Traffic Alert.

The Extended Traffic Jam Assistant is designed to help the driver during the most tedious driving environment, stop and go traffic. Designed to operate on limited access highways at speeds up to 37 mph, this system integrates Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go and a driver attention monitoring camera that replaces the need to touch the steering wheel every 30-50 seconds as long as the driver’s attention is clearly on the road ahead.

Parking Assistance Package Plus with Back-Up Assistant: maneuvering with ease

Drivers of the new BMW 330e and 330e xDrive Sedans are also able to rely on the comprehensive support of innovative assistance systems when parking and maneuvering. The optional Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at both the front and rear provides visual and acoustic signals to prevent collisions with obstacles located to the side or rear of the vehicle. The optional Parking Assistance Package goes further with Automatic Parking, which automatically selects either parallel or perpendicular spaces along to the road, and maneuvering into them. The latest version of the system takes care of steering the car, accelerating, braking and automatic transmission shifting. What’s more, Automatic Parking can now also be used to automatically maneuver out of parallel parking spaces. Here, the driver first specifies the direction in which the parking space is to be excited by switching on the turn signal for the appropriate side. The system then guides the vehicle – using reversing and steering inputs – into a position from which the driver can leave the parking space with the steering turned to the same angle.

Another of the Parking Assistant’s features is the innovative Back-Up Assistant, which helps the driver to exit parking spots or maneuver when space is limited. This system is the only one of its kind in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan’s segment. Back-Up Assistant offers the highly convenient option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as narrow parking garages or entrances to courtyards. To do this, the system stores the steering movements for any section the car has just driven forward along at no more than 22 mph. The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 50 yards by steering it along exactly the same line it has just taken when moving forward, while all the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the area around the car. The Back-Up Assistant can back the car up at a maximum 5.5 mph.

The rear view camera and the functions included with the optional Parking Assistant Package provide drivers with an excellent overview of the situation when parking or exiting parking spaces. The Park View, Panorama View and Remote 3D Top View features are used to create a 360° image of the vehicle and its surroundings – from different perspectives – in the Control Display. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant

Available in the BMW 330e models is the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital character that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. The BMW Group is set to revolutionize driving pleasure with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and, in so doing, enter a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions and information simply by speaking. The range of functions and skills available will be constantly expanded as part of regular updates.

The Intelligent Personal Assistant is, in short, the ideal co-driver and comes in particularly useful during everyday driving (“Hey BMW, what is the closest gas station on my route”). To make navigation particularly easy, drivers can give him access to their calendar and contacts, which will enable him to find parking spaces at the destination, provide information on traffic jams along the route and remind the driver when they need to set off. It also learns destinations the customer drives to frequently.

BMW Digital Key: turning the smartphone into a car key

The BMW Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow the new BMW 330e and 330e xDrive Sedans to be locked and unlocked from a compatible smartphone, removing the need for a conventional car key. Holding the smartphone up to the door handle opens the car. Once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the wireless charging or smartphone tray. Accessible via the BMW Connected app, the Digital Key offers unrivalled flexibility. The BMW Digital Key is compatible for all NFC-capable Samsung Galaxy smartphones running Android 8.0 and above. Compatibility is limited to select carriers.

The new top of the range, seventh generation, M Performance 3 Series will make its world debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show Nov. 30 – December 9 with the M340i xDrive model.

Over the past 40 years, no other BMW has embodied the concept of the Ultimate Driving Machine better than the BMW 3 Series.  Modern design, exceptional handling, efficiency and innovative technology, all signature characteristics of a BMW, have been developed to the highest level ever through tireless engineering and testing. The new 2020 BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans represent not only the core of the BMW 3 Series range (of which over 15 million units have been sold worldwide) but also the heart and passion of the BMW brand.

When the first BMW 3 Series arrived on U.S. shores in 1976 as a successor to the iconic BMW 2002, it built upon the sport sedan foundation pioneered by that model and launched a new name: the BMW 3 Series that would become BMW’s most successful model – a status it retains to this day. Over the course of six model generations, the BMW 3 Series has ranked as the world’s biggest-selling premium car, led the way for high-performance powertrain and chassis technology and earned a reputation as a pioneer of technological innovations in its segment. The latest M Performance edition of the car sees BMW building on the sporting tradition of the 3 Series, whose exploits in motorsports have earned it many accolades. The seventh generation of the sports sedan moves the game on once again in terms of driving dynamics, not to mention premium quality and innovation, in its segment.

The first BMW M Performance 3 Series

The Summer of 2019 will see the arrival of the BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans. The new BMW M Performance models will showcase the full dynamic potential of the new BMW 3 Series. An updated six-cylinder inline gasoline engine, M Performance chassis tuning, optional xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the standard M Sport rear differential will deliver performance attributes that will satisfy and impress any driver.

The rear-wheel drive BMW M340i will offer the pure driving experience that 3 Series enthusiasts have enjoyed for the past 40 years. With reduced weight compared to its all-wheel drive sibling and enhanced steering feel compared to the outgoing models, the M340i Sedan will be the driver’s exhilarating driving companion. The BMW M340i xDrive Sedan adds the increased traction of all-wheel drive to improve the new model’s abilities in both dry and adverse road conditions.   

The new version of the straight-six engine, developed for the BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans, produces 382 hp and peak torque of 369 lb-ft. A 0–60 mph time of 4.2 seconds (provisional figure) takes this new BMW M Performance model into territory previously inhabited by BMW M cars.

The 3.0 liter, six-cylinder, inline engine in the BMW M340i and BMW M340i xDrive Sedans features an aluminum crankcase and aluminum cylinder head. A new, single, Twin-scroll turbocharger with an integral, compact, steel exhaust manifold and impellers that weight approximately 25% less than those of preceding models, builds boost pressure more rapidly. Fuel is supplied by means of new High Precision Injection technology which allows injection pressures up to 350 bar. The current version of M TwinPower Turbo technology also features VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double VANOS variable camshaft control.

Power and acceleration are accompanied by the characteristic sound of the six-cylinder, inline engine, which has gained additional presence thanks to the dual-pipe exhaust system. In SPORT and SPORT+ modes, which can be activated via the Driving Experience Control switch, the valve-controlled exhaust system generates a particularly distinctive sound.

8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission

The new 2020 BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans are equipped with the standard 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission. The latest upgraded version of this quick-shifting sport automatic transmission features a new, optimized hydraulic control system and shorter gearing for improved response and acceleration. The 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s Launch Control function optimizes traction during acceleration off the line more effectively than in previous versions and shift paddles on the steering wheel allow for manual gear selection.

Intelligent connectivity enables the sport automatic transmission to adapt its shift strategy according to the route and driving situation. Working with the standard navigation system, the 8-speed Sport Steptronic transmission uses data from this system and from the optional Active Cruise Control system’s radar sensor. This makes it possible for the transmission to avoid unnecessary gear changes when negotiating a series of fast corners and, when approaching a vehicle ahead for example, to shift down early in order to use the engine braking to scrub off speed.

The Auto Start Stop function and the coasting function available in conjunction with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission in the new BMW 3 Series Sedans also use data supplied by the optional Navigation System Professional with data from the standard BMW Active Guard driving assistance systems’ front camera. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown – for example when stopping briefly at junctions or roundabouts – can be prevented. Movement of vehicles ahead is registered in order to determine the ideal moment for the Auto Start Stop function to stop and start the engine. The coasting function is now available when either ECO Pro or COMFORT mode is selected using the Driving Experience Control switch between 9 and 99 mph. The efficiency-enhancing decoupling of the powertrain only takes place in driving situations where performance and comfort are not compromised. If the driver suddenly lifts off the accelerator, the powertrain stays connected so that engine braking can be used to support deceleration. For the same reason, powertrain disconnection is also prevented when approaching a junction or a vehicle ahead.

BMW Intelligent xDrive

With fully variable power distribution between the front and rear axles, the intelligent all-wheel drive technology in the new BMW M340i xDrive Sedan ensures maximum traction, agility and vehicle stability. The rear-wheel bias of BMW xDrive supports the driving experience that driver’s expect from their BMW. The Driver Experience Control modes SPORT and SPORT+ help support more dynamic driving even further by transferring power to the rear wheels when the driver is steering into a corner for example.

Like the rear-wheel drive M340i, the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan is also equipped with a standard M Sport rear differential. The electronically controlled, fully variable rear-wheel locking functions contribute noticeably to not only increase traction, but also enhanced stability and agility of the vehicle.

M Performance Chassis Technology

When developing the body structure and chassis technology of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, a number of clear priorities were set:

The foundations for these attributes are provided by:

• Careful weight reduction

• Near perfect 50:50 front/rear weight distribution

Overall body rigidity is up 25 percent, rising to as much as a 50 percent improvement in certain areas. The increased rigidity of the body and suspension mountings enables the standard M Sport suspension to go about its work in the most efficient way possible, allowing for suspension spring rates to be increased by 20 percent over the previous-generation BMW 3 Series Sedan without loss of comfort.

Lightweight construction and increased rigidity deliver greater agility.

The rigorous testing and development of the new chassis design enhances the agility of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan in a number of ways. Many details of the proven double-joint spring strut front suspension and five-link rear suspension have been upgraded. Along with the sportier handling, the car’s ride comfort and acoustics have both been improved. Aluminum swivel bearings and control arms for the front axle and aluminum wheel mounts and a new generation of wheel bearings for the rear axle significantly reduce unsprung weight. The front axle – with its increased level of component rigidity, shear panels used to connect the axle to the body and its specially tuned kinematics – enhances both steering precision and cornering dynamics. Factors contributing to the high level of comfort provided by the sedan include a hydraulically damped torque strut bearing, which eliminates vibration and oscillation. At the rear axle, extremely rigid control arms and axle sub-frames along with the use of thrust arms for the body mounting ensure very precise wheel location.

Body weight reduced by as much as 121 lbs., drag coefficient as low as 0.26.

As with the individual chassis components, the weight of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan’s body construction has been reduced. The progress achieved through BMW efficient lightweight measures is rooted in an intelligent material mix including increased use of high-strength steels and aluminum. The body-in-white is 44 lbs. lighter than that of the outgoing model and the front spring struts and engine sub-frame of the BMW 3 Series Sedan are now made of aluminum. This reduces the weight of the body structure by some 16.5 lbs. compared with the predecessor model. A further weight saving of almost 33 lbs. is achieved through the use of aluminum for the hood and front fenders.

The optimization of its aerodynamic characteristics benefits not only the efficiency of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, but also its performance. The drag coefficient (Cd) of the BMW 3 Series sedan has been reduced to a low 0.26, a reduction of .03 Cd over the previous BMW 3 Series. Factors responsible for the new segment-leading figures include the almost completely sealed underbody, aerodynamically optimized wheels, the use of Air Curtains at the front of the car and the latest generation of active air flap control, which extends across the BMW kidney grille and lower air intake.

A newly developed suspension and damping system contributes to the balanced handling of the new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans.

The introduction of lift-related damper control reduces body movement perceptibly smoothing out vibrations caused by bumpy road surfaces and dynamic cornering, which paves the way for sporty, authoritative handling. The system adds extra hydraulic damping at the front axle and a compression limiting system at the rear. It is continuously variable and adjusts the damper firmness progressively according to the changing spring travel. This prevents excessive body dive when driving over large bumps and so avoids uncomfortable, nervous damping response.

At the front axle, the first line of defense against body vibrations is an additional element within the inner sleeve of the damper. Only when greater loads are encountered does the entire damper become active. The rear dampers adapt continuously to the driving situation. Even when the vehicle is carrying heavier loads, they provide the ideal degree of hydraulic damping for the situation at hand. Lift-related damping is an active element of the suspension set-up and is designed specifically to optimize the balance between sportiness and comfort. The positive effect of progressive suspension adjustment can also be felt in less demanding circumstances; even small bumps can trigger damper lift, which makes a noticeable difference in enhancing passenger comfort.

Standard M Sport and optional Adaptive M suspensions

With kinematics and elastokinematics clearly tuned for dynamic driving, the M Sport suspension features more rigid bearings and additional body struts, firmer springs and anti-roll bars, and an even higher degree of wheel camber. The M Sport suspension now also applies to the all-wheel-drive M340i xDrive with the same 10 mm / 0.4 inch lowering in ride height as its rear-wheel drive sibling.

The optional Adaptive M suspension is the combination of M Sport suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Able to deliver damping force to each wheel separately via continuously adjustable valves, it is both the sportiest and most comfortable suspension variant available for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. The latest version of this damping system operates with new valves and an optimized control algorithm, which now also enables load-dependent control of the damping forces. In addition, switching between the different modes using the Driving Experience Control now results in a much more perceptible variation in the damping characteristics.

In COMFORT mode, the electronically controlled dampers provide well-balanced long distance comfort, whereas in SPORT mode they encourage a much more dynamic driving style. As well as modifying the damper configuration, each setting also influences the steering, accelerator response and the shift dynamics of the Steptronic transmission. ADAPTIVE mode is now also available. With this setting selected, the car automatically adjusts its responses to the driving style and, depending on the equipment specified, to the route profile. The control system responds to accelerator and steering inputs and the position of the selector lever to make the powertrain and suspension characteristics sportier or more comfort-oriented. The map data supplied by the optional Navigation System Professional is also used to prepare the car for an upcoming junction or bend.

Standard Variable Sport steering: More direct, precise and agile

With its variable ratio, Variable Sport steering is able to adjust to changes steering angle, making it as adept at keeping the new BMW 3 Series Sedan effortlessly in a straight line as at maximizing cornering agility or turning and maneuvering comfort. In its latest form, the Variable Sport Steering is more direct in its responses, even when only a slight steering input is applied. Cornering is precise and responsive, while the wheel angles required for parking maneuvers are achieved with less steering wheel input required.

Standard M Sport brakes:

High-performance lightweight brakes play a very important part in the characteristics of the new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans.  The front brake disks measure 348 mm / 13.7 inches with four-piston fixed calipers while the rear brake disks measure 345 mm / 13.6 inches in diameter with single-piston floating calipers.

The M Sport brakes provide excellent braking performance and intuitive feel, whether negotiating city streets or driving around a circuit on a track day. Combining an extremely sporty set-up - with short pedal travel and a distinct pressure point – with outstanding thermal resistance, they provide lasting and effective stopping power. The M Sport brakes achieve this with a more direct ratio as well as a different hydraulic configuration. The brake calipers are painted blue and display the M logo.

The functions provided by the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system include not only anti-lock braking (ABS) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), but also a variety of stabilizing functions and the Start-Off Assistant. The standard Performance Control heightens the agility of the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan by distributing more power to the rear wheels as the situation requires. In order to optimize directional stability during heavy braking on surfaces with differing levels of grip for the right-hand and left-hand wheels, a steering impulse is applied to help the driver correct the car’s line. The functioning of the electromechanical parking brake is integrated into the rear brake calipers by means of the DSC system.

M Sport differential optimizes traction, agility, stability and cornering dynamics.

The standard M Sport differential in the BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans is an electronically controlled, fully variable locking rear differential helps that appreciably enhances traction and cornering. The active differential lock also has a positive effect on directional stability and agility.

Using the DSC system to precisely limit rotational speed equalization between the inside and outside rear wheel when cornering optimizes the transfer of power to the road in all driving situations. The electro-mechanical locking effect allows as much as 1,106 lb-ft of torque to be redirected from the faster-turning wheel to the slower-turning one. This means understeer can be countered effectively under quick cornering. Here, the engine’s power, which cannot be transferred to the road by the unloaded wheel on the inside of a turn, is deliberately shifted to the wheel on the outside of the turn rather than applying the brakes to neutralize its effect. This draws the car into the bend and allows the new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans to accelerate out of the bend with grip and speed.

The effect of the M Sport differential is quickly noticeable in a series of fast bends. The distribution of power to each individual wheel prevents the tendency to oversteer in situations involving multiple changes of direction and load. Here, the transfer of more power to whichever wheel is on the inside of the bend enables the driver to stick to the chosen course with stability and confidence. Similarly, when the driver changes lanes and brakes at the same time, directional stability is optimized through the transfer of power between the right and left rear wheels.

Exterior design: an expression of sporting prowess.

The exterior design of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan uses a combination of precisely drawn lines and strikingly contoured surfaces to create a modern interpretation of the sporting aesthetic. Its new design language provides a clear showcase for the athletic character of the car. The new M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans are 2.9 inches longer than their predecessors, 0.6 inches wider and 0.5 inches taller. These dimensions lend the latest-generation models dynamically stretched proportions and muscular statures. The cars’ 1.6 inch longer wheelbase and increased track widths of +1.7 inches front and +0.8 inches rear, meanwhile, have a direct and positive influence on its poise and agility.

In keeping with the sporting theme, the front end of the BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans cuts a wide, low-slung and aggressive figure. The large BMW kidney grill mesh inserts are framed by a single surround and split up by wide bars that link to the headlight units. A technically sophisticated and visually smaller interpretation of the customary BMW twin headlights gives them a road-focused stare. Their familiar two-way split is emphasized by an eye-catching notch in the front bumper that rises up into the headlight contour. Full-LED headlights with extended features and U-shaped daytime driving lights are standard. The optional Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight stand apart with their hexagonal daytime driving light rings and blue, L-shaped elements in the inner and outer light sources.

The hood is shaped by four contour lines flowing towards the BMW kidney grill. At its leading edge, it sits flush with the upper edge of the headlights and kidney grill. Below it, the front bumper has large surfacing and a modern look. Exterior mirror caps, air intake elements, BMW kidney grill surrounds, trapezoidal tailpipe trim and model lettering are all finished in Cerium Grey metallic.

The car’s hood, long wheelbase, short overhangs and elegantly flowing roofline accentuate its sporting profile when viewed from the side. A pair of character lines, which rise up to the rear of the car at door-handle level, strengthen the visual impact made by the forward-surging body. A contour line near the side skirts guides the eye to the sculpted rear wheel arches.

Another feature treated to a striking new look is the Hofmeister kink – the familiar counter-swing at the trailing edge of the side window graphic. A BMW hallmark, this element of the window frame is now integrated into the C-pillar, giving the rear doors a “freestanding” glass edge. The new design language majors on clear forms and precise lines, and this approach is also visible in the transition of the flanks into the car’s rear end. Surface contours flow stylistically into the rear bumper from the side skirts and extend in an upward movement via the rear lights to the spoiler lip on the trunk lid. Horizontal lines and the slim, stylishly darkened light units housing L-shaped LED taillights give the rear a wide and athletic stance.

Interior design: a classy route to sporting flair.

The brand’s new design language brings a clear arrangement of surfaces to the interior of the new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans. This new language accentuates the increased spaciousness of the cabin and, together with the cockpit’s focus on the driver, enhances their focus on the road ahead. The instrument panel has a modern, light look, and its horizontal lines, high-quality electroplated trim strips and contours extending into the doors lend themselves to a feeling of width and elegance. The coordinated design of the door trim, instrument panel and center console create an all-round feeling of space and a sporting aura. With their dynamic lines and clasp-style door openers, the front and rear door trim panels create a neatly coherent impression. The newly designed instrument cluster and Control Display form a large surfaced screen grouping, while the controls not included in these units are clustered into clearly structured function panels. In the center of the instrument panel, the displays and buttons for the air conditioning and the central air vents form a sharply designed unit, while the light functions are operated from a panel of buttons next to the steering wheel. The start/stop button for the engine is now positioned in the center console, where the gearshift lever is joined by the iDrive Controller and the buttons for the Driving Experience Control and electromechanical parking brake.

Interior and equipment: Refined premium ambiance and innovative options.

The cabins of the new 2020 BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans are designed to offer a modern space with a focus on driving enjoyment. The driver, the front passenger and those travelling in the three rear seats will appreciate the extra space over the predecessor, not just on long distance journeys but in everyday driving. Higher quality materials, precise build quality and numerous meticulously crafted details set the tone for the refined premium character of the four-door sedan.

The standard sport seats provide excellent lateral support and have an even greater range of adjustment. Premium Vernasca leather seats with contrast stitching and piping are available as an option. The Anthracite BMW Individual roof liner, the M leather steering wheel with shift paddles and interior trim strips in Aluminum Tetragon provide a performance oriented ambiance.

Shoulder room in the front of the cabin has increased while passengers in the rear benefit from more legroom, and all occupants now enjoy more headroom than in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan’s predecessor. Seating comfort in the rear has been improved significantly, and long journeys are now a more comfortable experience for the passenger in the middle of the three rear seats.

Getting in and out of the car is now easier for the rear passengers in the new car, as the modified roof edge and side skirt contouring has increased the height of the door aperture, while the distance between the front and rear seats has been extended by 0.4 inches. The rear compartment can accommodate a row of three child seats, two of which can be locked into place using ISOFIX anchor points. This is now an easier process, as the bars in question are positioned further to either side.

Optimized all-round visibility, standard glass roof with far larger surface area.

The slender A-pillar trim, the new location of the Control Display and the rearview mirror’s ultra-slim frame all serve to optimize the view through the windscreen at the same time as adding to the interior’s more spacious feel. The view to the rear has also been significantly improved. Customers will be greeted by the larger glass area from the standard sunroof, which can be better enjoyed by rear seat passengers.

The new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans’ trunk capacity has been increased from 15.8 to 17.0 cubic feet, and its new partitioning into primary luggage compartment and separate storage compartments has created an additional 1.3 cubic feet of space. The standard Storage package adds features such as extra storage areas, partition nets on both sides of the trunk, bag hooks, and a 12V socket. The standard 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest makes it easy to transport particularly large and bulky items. With the standard the Comfort Access, the car will automatically unlock when the keyfob is detected in its immediate vicinity and lock again when it moves out of range. This feature’s functionality includes hands-free opening and closing of the trunk lid.

Ambient lighting: an atmospheric interior mood

The standard lighting for the cabin of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is composed entirely of LEDs. This includes the reading and interior lights in the front and rear, as well as the lighting for the glove compartment, the storage compartment under the center armrest, the footwells, the mirrors in the sun visors and the boot, plus the courtesy lights in the doors. The optional Ambient Lighting results in atmospherically rich illumination of the cabin, which can also be adjusted as desired. The additional indirect lighting of the contour lines running along the instrument panel and the door paneling uses precisely positioned LED fiber-optic light guides to create a dynamic, exclusive mood. A total of six light colors and eleven combinations of brightness, light distribution and color scheme for all light sources in the interior can be selected from the iDrive menu.

In addition, the Dynamic interior light function emits pulsating light signals during specific vehicle system functions. These signals appear on the inner trim of an open door when the engine is running and on the instrument panel in response to an incoming phone call. Another of the optional ambient lighting’s functions is the Welcome Light Carpet, which illuminates the approach to the doors when they are unlocked using the central locking or a door is opened.

Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight.

In standard specification, the task of illuminating the road ahead falls to full-LED headlights with extended features that use LED units not just for low beam and high beam, but also for the daytime driving lights, direction indicators and dynamic cornering light functions.

For even better visibility when driving at night, customers can opt for the Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight, which offer variable illumination of the road ahead. Blue, L-shaped accents inside the signature twin headlights reveal the presence of this highly sophisticated lighting technology.

Innovative technology is employed for cleaning the windshield too. The wiper arms with integral spray nozzles specially developed for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan allow the washer fluid to be distributed in a very even manner, ensuring it does not impair the view through the windscreen at whatever speed the car is travelling.

Optimized acoustics: climate control, A-pillars, windscreen and doors

The new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans comes standard with a rain sensor, automatic headlights, a hands-free phone system and three-zone automatic climate control with independent control of the temperature and ventilation settings for the driver, front passenger and rear passengers.  The acoustic properties of both systems have been improved. The air ducts and outlets have been redesigned and pressure losses reduced, leading to a perceptible decrease in flow noise when the ventilation, heating or air conditioning are operating.

Body improvements to divert air flow further boost acoustic comfort, while the structural foam used to fill the A-pillars lessens the amount of wind noise that reaches the interior. Acoustic glass for the windscreen is part of standard specification for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan.

Audio and sound

The BMW Live Cockpit infotainment system with the standard hi-fi audio features ten speakers and an amplifier with 205 watts of output. Those looking to bring the ultimate in audio quality to the new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans, can select the optional Harman Kardon surround sound system, which upgrades the system to 16 speakers and a digital nine-channel amplifier generating output of 464 watts.

Driver Assistance Systems

The new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans takes the exciting driving experience to new heights. But it also assumes a pioneering role when it comes to assistance systems designed to ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions – such as traffic jams – and lends a helping hand in awkward maneuvering situations. The new model generation offers a far wider choice of standard and optionally available systems which enhance specific aspects of comfort and safety. This array of advanced driver assistance systems takes the new BMW 3 Series Sedans further along the road to automated driving than any of its rivals.

Camera images and the data gathered by radar and ultrasonic sensors are used to monitor the vehicle’s surrounding area and either alert the driver to hazards or minimize the risk of an accident by means of corrective braking and steering. The optional Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go braking function helps to make life easier on long-distance journeys by automatically accelerating or slowing down the car to maintain the desired speed set by the driver. The set speed can be imported directly from the optional traffic sign recognition system’s display. The Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function goes even further to help the driver by not just maintaining the chosen cruising speed but also keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead. The system is operational in a speed range from 0 – 130 mph and is able to brake the vehicle to a standstill, if necessary. The maximum length of time that can pass before the car starts off again automatically has been extended to 30 seconds. In order to determine the ideal moment to pull away, the system’s sensors now register not only the vehicle immediately ahead, but the one in front of that as well.

The new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans comes standard with the Active Guard, Frontal Collision waring with City Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning, the latest version of which also alerts the driver when a cyclist is detected. Depending on the situation, the system can bring the vehicle to a halt to either avoid a collision or minimize its consequences. The optional Driving Assistant includes Blind Spot Detection systems, which operate from 44 – 130 mph and from 12 mph to the car’s top speed respectively, and help the driver to guide the car back onto the correct path with a steering input. The Driving Assistant’s remaining functions also include Rear Collision Protection and Cross-Traffic Alert, thereby reducing the risk of a collision when reversing into roads that are obstructed from the driver’s view. To help it keep an eye on what’s happening behind the car, Cross-Traffic Alert is able to employ both the radar sensors in the rear bumper and the rear view camera.

Driving Assistant Professional: the ultimate in comfort and safety

The optional Driving Assistant Professional offers the full complement of assistance systems for comfortable and safe motoring. Underpinning it all is a trifocal camera co-developed with Mobileye, working in conjunction with a front facing radar. This complete package makes its systems available in an exceptionally wide range of situations. In addition to all the components of the Driving Assistant and the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, it also includes the Steering and Lane Keeping Assistant, which takes its cues from road markings and vehicles driving ahead and works together with the driver to help keep the vehicle in the detected lane.  A dedicated button on the steering wheel’s left-hand spoke ensures the systems are easy to operate. Pushing it once activates both the Active Cruise Control and the Steering and Lane Keeping Assistant.

The Driving Assistant Professional also features the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Avoidance. As well as emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to vibrate, active side collision avoidance also uses a steering input to help avoid collisions. Rounding off the Driving Assistant Professional’s extensive list of functions are the Evasion Assistance, which now also reacts to pedestrians and Cross-Traffic Alert.

The Extended Traffic Jam Assistant is designed to help the driver during the most tedious driving environment, stop and go traffic. Designed to operate on limited access highways at speeds up to 37 mph, this system integrates Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go and a driver attention monitoring camera that replaces the need to touch the steering wheel every 30-50 seconds as long as the driver’s attention is clearly on the road ahead.

BMW Head-Up Display: Larger projection area and optimized graphics

The optional BMW Head-Up Display, part of the available Premium Package, helps the driver to enjoy focused and extremely safe driving in the new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans. It projects driving-related information directly into the driver’s field of vision on the windshield, where it can be assimilated without the need to divert their eyes from the road. The latest generation of the system boasts a projection area 70% larger than in the outgoing BMW 3 Series Sedan, plus enhanced graphics and additional display readings. The information projected by the BMW Head-Up Display includes the car’s speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from the assistance systems, detailed route guidance and turn instructions, and telephone and entertainment lists.

Another feature activated in conjunction with the BMW Head-Up Display is distance warning, which is part of the Active Cruise Control system’s set of functions and flashes up a graphic icon to alert the driver when they get closer to the vehicle in front than the pre-set minimum distance.

Parking Assistance Package Plus with Back-Up Assistant: maneuvering with ease

Drivers of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan are also able to rely on the comprehensive support of innovative assistance systems when parking and maneuvering. The optional Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at both the front and rear provides visual and acoustic signals to prevent collisions with obstacles located to the side or rear of the vehicle. The optional Parking Assistance Package goes further with Automatic Parking, which automatically selects either parallel or perpendicular spaces along to the road, and maneuvering into them. The latest version of the system takes care of steering the car, accelerating, braking and automatic transmission shifting. What’s more, Automatic Parking can now also be used to automatically maneuver out of parallel parking spaces. Here, the driver first specifies the direction in which the parking space is to be excited by switching on the turn signal for the appropriate side. The system then guides the vehicle – using reversing and steering inputs – into a position from which the driver can leave the parking space with the steering turned to the same angle.

Another of the Parking Assistant’s features is the innovative Back-Up Assistant, which helps the driver to exit parking spots or maneuver when space is limited. This system is the only one of its kind in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan’s segment. Back-Up Assistant offers the highly convenient option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as narrow parking garages or entrances to courtyards. To do this, the system stores the steering movements for any section the car has just driven forward along at no more than 22 mph. The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 50 yards by steering it along exactly the same line it has just taken when moving forward, while all the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the area around the car. The Back-Up Assistant can back the car up at a maximum 5.5 mph.

The rear view camera and the functions included with the optional Parking Assistant Package provide drivers with an excellent overview of the situation when parking or exiting parking spaces. The Park View, Panorama View and Remote 3D Top View features are used to create a 360° image of the vehicle and its surroundings – from different perspectives – in the Control Display. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

Displays and iDrive: Premier for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant

Making its debut in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan in 2019 is the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital character that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. The BMW Group is set to revolutionize driving pleasure with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and, in so doing, enter a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions and information simply by speaking. The range of functions and skills available will be constantly expanded as part of regular updates.

BMWs acquire a digital personality

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines and habits, and is subsequently able to apply them in the appropriate context. It helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with their favored settings – e.g. for the seat heating or the places they drive to frequently using the navigation system (“Take me home”). It is familiar with the vehicle’s functions and is able to operate them as required. Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car accordingly. The assistant will benefit from technical upgrades and be able to learn more and more preferences and favored settings. The assistant takes further strides forward with every command given, every question asked and every setting selected.

A constant on-board companion: the digital BMW expert

The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ensures there is always a genuine BMW professional on board. It is able to explain all sorts of different functions (“How does the High Beam Assistant work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”) and help answer questions (“What warning messages do I have?”). It knows the driver’s favorite settings, and can even activate a combination of them to enhance well-being. For instance, “Hey BMW, I feel tired” triggers a vitality program that adjusts the lighting mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the driver feel more awake.

The perfect driver assistant

The Intelligent Personal Assistant is, in short, the ideal co-driver and comes in particularly useful during everyday driving (“Hey BMW, what is the closest gas station on my route”). To make navigation particularly easy, drivers can give him access to their calendar and contacts, which will enable him to find parking spaces at the destination, provide information on traffic jams along the route and remind the driver when they need to set off. It also learns destinations the customer drives to frequently.

BMW Digital Key: turning the smartphone into a car key

The BMW Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow the new BMW 3 Series Sedan to be locked and unlocked from a compatible smartphone, removing the need for a conventional car key. Holding the smartphone up to the door handle opens the car. Once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the wireless charging or smartphone tray. Accessible via the BMW Connected app, the Digital Key offers unrivalled flexibility. The BMW Digital Key is compatible for all NFC-capable Samsung Galaxy smartphones running Android 8.0 and above. Compatibility is limited to select carriers.

Connected Navigation with new digital services

“Connected Navigation” encompasses a number of digital services that are designed to turn seamless and contextual route planning both inside and outside the BMW into a more sophisticated experience. Drivers of the new BMW M340i and M340i xDrive Sedans will be able to send destinations from various apps straight to their car’s navigation system. The most important destinations will be stored in BMW Connected and synchronized with the car, so that the key addresses can be accessed from any device at any time. One particularly helpful new feature is the Parking Finder, which proposes various parking options to the driver before the destination is reached. This service includes providing information on parking garages as well as on street parking spaces with a particularly good chance of being available near the destination. The existing On-Street Parking Information and ParkNow services have been intelligently incorporated into the new assistant’s scope of functions.

BMW iDrive display and control: The right information at the right time

The newly designed instrument cluster/Control Display screen grouping and extended functionality take intuitive operation to the next level in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, while helping drivers to concentrate even more effectively on the road ahead.

The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional upgrades the interface with a 12.3-inch high-resolution digital instrument cluster display and a 10.25-inch digital touch screen Control Display featuring the all-new iDrive 7 Operating System. This equipment package also features the Connected Navigation system, a hard drive-based multimedia system with 20 GB of memory, Touch Controller, one USB-A and one USB-C port for data transfer, Apple CarPlay and WiFi interface.

The latest generation of BMW iDrive, boasting fully digital displays, is closely geared to the driver’s personal needs – with the aim of maximizing their attention levels. The system’s clear presentation and structuring are designed to provide drivers with the right information at the right time, aided further by the customizable and personalized displays. The redesigned information display in the middle of the instrument cluster now leaves enough room for an excerpt from the navigation map, for instance. In the main menu on the Control Display, the driver is able to configure up to ten pages, each showing two to four pads (tiles) with live content.

The intuitive multimodal interaction between driver and vehicle has undergone further improvement. The Control Display graphics adapt depending on the operating method, the voice control system (based on natural language understanding) is better than ever before and the optional BMW gesture control now works with two extra gestures, bringing the total to seven. Depending on the situation, the driver can operate the various functions using the familiar iDrive Controller, the steering wheel controls, touch control, voice control or gesture control.

The first-ever BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicle makes its world premiere in Los Angeles. The newest and largest model in the BMW X line-up uses outstanding powertrain options and chassis technology, plus generous levels of space in each of its three rows of seats, and advanced equipment features, to deliver an unparalleled experience for the driver and passengers. The design of the new chassis provides the best balance of exceptional traction on rough terrain and excellent dynamic response and ride comfort on pavement. The BMW X7 comes standard with two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers to sharpen the vehicle’s handling, while at the same time increasing ride comfort. The BMW X7 will begin production at BMW’s Spartanburg, SC plant later this year in preparation for its March 2019 market launch.  

The BMW 8 Series Convertible makes its world premiere alongside the new BMW 8 Series Coupe in Los Angeles, marking the return of the famed BMW nameplate for the first time in 20 years.  The new BMW M850i xDrive features a 530hp V8 twin-turbocharged engine – the latest generation of BMW’s award-winning 4.4-liter 8-cylinder engine – combined with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive and BMW Efficient Lightweight design. Body, powertrain and suspension were all honed to achieve the agility, precision and poise expected of a top-class premium sports coupe.

The BMW 3 Series has epitomized the concept of a sports sedan for more than 40 years, exuding dynamic design, agile handling, exceptional efficiency and innovative equipment features.  Following the debut of the all-new BMW 3 Series in Paris this October, the M Performance variant of the seventh generation BMW 3 Series makes its world premiere in Los Angeles.  The all-new BMW M340i Sedan showcases the full dynamic potential of the all-new BMW 3 Series.  An updated 382 hp 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder in-line engine, M Performance chassis tuning, xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the standard M Sport rear differential will deliver performance attributes that will impress any driver.  The new BMW 3 Series Sedan also features a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems designed to ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions – such as traffic jams – and assist with difficult maneuvering situations. The new model generation offers a far wider choice of standard and optionally available systems to enhance specific aspects of comfort and safety. These advanced driver assistance systems position the new BMW 3 Series Sedan ahead of its rivals in automated driving.

The new, third-generation BMW Z4 M40i Roadster is a premium open-top sports car boasting a classic fabric soft-top, an emotion-packed body design and a pure, driver-focused interior. Agility, performance and precise handling have always been top priorities for the Z4 family but the new two-seater’s body, powertrain and chassis have all been developed to ensure the new Z4 Roadster arrives with a genuine sports car performance pedigree. A perfect 50:50 weight distribution, the newly designed front double-joint spring strut suspension and the new five-link rear suspension are complemented by the standard rear M Sport differential, while M Sport brakes ensure the chassis is fully capable of using all of the power and torque available from the BMW 3.0-liter 6-cylinder inline motor. 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. of torque help the Z4 M40i Roadster sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

Launched earlier this year, the all-new, fourth-generation BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle retains the hallmark proportions of an SAV, while offering an all-new streamlined design language including clean surfacing and precise lines that accentuate elegant poise and authority.  A sculpted hood, a short front overhang, lightly hexagonal wheel arches and the dynamic sweep of the roofline exemplify the sporty, yet rugged, character of the all-new 2019 BMW X5.  The BMW X5 offers an array of significantly expanded driver assistance systems, such as Extended Traffic Jam Assist for limited access highways that uses an interior camera to monitor the driver’s attention to the road ahead, reducing the requirement of putting one’s hands on the steering wheel every 30-50 seconds. Off-road capabilities have been greatly enhanced with the available Off-Road Package that includes two-axle air suspension, M Sport rear locking differential and four drive modes tailored to maximize traction on sand, gravel, rocks and snow. Remote starting and a factory installed trailer tow hitch, rated for 7,200 pounds, also make their debut. Since its introduction almost 20 years ago, the BMW X5 has helped define the premium Sports Activity Vehicle segment, selling more than 2.2 million units worldwide. 

Highly automated, emission-free and fully connected, the BMW Vision iNEXT Concept brings all of the BMW Group’s strategic innovation fields together for the first time.  The fully electric iNEXT boasts the size and proportions of a modern BMW Sports Activity Vehicle and instantly conveys its trailblazing through clearly sculpted forms and surfaces.  The BMW Vision iNEXT brings the possibility of autonomous mobility into the near future and showcases the BMW Group’s approach in the strategic fields of autonomous driving, electric mobility, connectivity and intelligent design.  The series-produced version of the BMW iNEXT will arrive in 2021.

Woodcliff Lake, N.J.: March , 2016… The all-new BMW 330e iPerformance adds another highly innovative variant to the BMW 3 Series line-up with its advanced plug-in hybrid drive system. For the first time, cutting-edge BMW i technologies have been integrated into the world’s most successful premium model. The BMW 3 Series Sedan has already set standards for sports performance and fuel economy in its segment using conventional combustion engines. Key ingredients are its intelligent lightweight design, outstanding aerodynamics for its class and the extensive use of BMW EfficientDynamics technology fitted as standard. The all new BMW 330e iPerformance will be available in summer 2016 at dealers starting at $44,695 including Destination and Handling.

The combustion engine fitted in the BMW 330e iPerformance is based on the four-cylinder gasoline unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that has already won the International Engine of the Year Award on two occasions. Stand-out characteristics include its sporty power delivery, output of 180 hp and peak torque of 215 lb-ft.

The electric motor, developing 87 hp with maximum peak torque of 184 lb-ft, and the power electronics are derived directly from the BMW eDrive technology featured as standard in the BMW i3 and BMW i8 models. The motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 7.6 kWh (gross)/5.7 kWh (net). The model-specific concept of the high-voltage battery, including its battery management system and highly efficient direct cooling system derive from BMW i. The battery can be recharged at any domestic power socket and is mounted flat in a particularly crash-safe position underneath the load compartment. The power electronics form a single integrated system that drives the electric motor via a liquid-cooled inverter, manages the energy flow from the high-voltage battery to the on-board electrical systems and provides centralized control of hybrid-specific functions.

The BMW 330e iPerformance consequently offers a system output of 248 hp and peak torque of 310 lb-ft, allowing a sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 140 mph. Pure-electric driving is possible at speeds of up to 75 mph and with a range of around 14 miles. The electric boost function is permanently enabled. The electric motor supplements the power from the combustion engine with 74 lb-ft of torque and can deliver a brief extra boost– depending on the position of the accelerator – of up to 184 lb-ft.

The power generated by both the combustion engine and the electric motor is channelled to the BMW 330e iPerformance model’s rear wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission with shift paddles. The transmission ratios take effect for both drive systems, lowering the mechanical and thermal loads placed on the electric motor by sustained high revs. This has a positive effect on the operating life of the electric drive system. It also means a torque converter is not required, which partially cancels out the extra weight of the additional drive unit. Just like conventionally powered BMW models, the advanced Steptronic transmission’s low friction losses allow for additional contribution to the high efficiency of the car’s drive system.

BMW iPerformance.
BMW 330e iPerformance drivers can choose from three BMW eDrive-specific programs – AUTO eDRIVE, MAX eDRIVE and SAVE BATTERY – via the eDrive button in the center console. These settings allow the plug-in hybrid drive system to be adapted to the way the car is being used at any point in time.

AUTO eDRIVE: This setting ensures the combustion engine and electric motor work optimize all driving situations and enable a pure-electric top speed of 50 mph. This is the default setting and is activated each time the car is started up.
MAX eDRIVE: In this mode the BMW 330e iPerformance uses electric power only, allowing it to drive for up to 14 miles with zero local emissions. In so doing, it draws on the electric drive system’s full power output and reaches a top speed of 75 mph. The combustion engine can activate at any time if the accelerator is pushed down beyond its kick down position when additional power is required, e.g. for overtaking.
SAVE BATTERY: This mode contains two operating settings. If the high-voltage battery’s charge is below 50 percent, the battery is charged to 50 percent by the combustion engine. If over 50 percent of battery charge remains, the charge level is “frozen”, so that the remaining electric energy can be used for part of the upcoming journey.

BMW Efficiency and Dynamics.
The Driving Dynamics Control switch on the center console allows the remaining settings to be adapted, the ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT and available SPORT+ modes are all activated using this switch. Just like steering and chassis functions and the shift characteristics of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, these modes also make changes to the operating strategy of the hybrid drive system. In COMFORT mode, which prioritizes a fine balance of comfort and efficiency, as well as hallmark BMW dynamics, the use of the electric motor is regulated in such a way that it helps to ensure both relaxed and economical driving. If required, the electric motor teams up with the combustion engine to maximize power delivery. Top-end performance using the full system output of the combustion engine and electric motor combined is the focus of SPORT and SPORT+ modes. In these settings the engine and motor are both permanently active. This allows the drive system to react instantaneously to every movement of the accelerator. In ECO PRO mode, the efficiency potential of electrification is utilized particularly extensively. Intelligent hybrid functionality allows the electric motor and combustion engine to work together with the greatest possible overall efficiency. The extremely efficient energy management for the drive systems involves carefully regulating the power output of electrically operated convenience functions such as the climate control system, seat heating and exterior mirror heating. This also helps to maximize the car’s range.

Intelligent Energy Management.
The BMW 330e iPerformance comes with an integrated, hybrid-specific Proactive Driving Assistant that works using the BMW navigation system. This function represents the interplay between BMW EfficientDynamics and BMW ConnectedDrive technology. When the route guidance function is active, the navigation system collates the available information on the route ahead and uses it to manage the responses of the two drive units. The system accesses both the static data from the interactive map, such as speed restrictions and gradient information, and real-time information on the current traffic situation (Real Time Traffic Information – RTTI). This proactive energy management uses the information as a basis to identify particular stretches of the route where the electric drive system will be preferred over the combustion engine. It ensures that the car drives through residential areas or – if the battery has sufficient charge – entire cross-town links on electric power alone and approaches the destination using only the electric drive system. The system also prepares to use electric energy for uphill sections of road, so that the system’s full recuperation potential can be used on a subsequent downhill stretch. The Proactive Driving Assistant ensures the BMW 330e is equipped to offer locally emission-free driving, but also to cover long stretches extremely efficiently and with less impact on the environment.

BMW 360° ELECTRIC solutions and home charging.
As a plug-in hybrid, the BMW 330e iPerformance can also be charged externally via the main power supply. The empty lithium-ion high-voltage battery can be fully replenished in just two hours and 30 minutes using a BMW i Wallbox Level II 240V charger (charging power: 3.5 kW, can be installed at home or the workplace). Alternatively, the BMW 330e iPerformance can also be charged from empty in 6-7 hours from a conventional domestic power socket (Level I 120V charger) using the standard charging cable supplied. The charging solutions available from BMW 360° ELECTRIC allow for easy charging while being on the road. The BMW i mobility service ChargeNow opens up access to the largest network of public charging stations worldwide (covering over 30,000 charging points managed by partners in 22 countries). BMW ConnectedDrive, the BMW ConnectedDrive app and the ChargeNow app make locating and using charging stations run by partners an extremely fast and easy process, while the ChargeNow card allows convenient and cash-free billing and payment.

The car is hooked up to the power supply via the charging socket, which is located in the front wing on the driver’s side, between the front wheel arch and the A-pillar. A flap with an integral sealing system protects it against ingress from moisture and dust. The charging socket itself has a corona ring, which uses a colour scheme to inform the user which stage of charging has been reached. If the corona ring flashes blue, the BMW 330e iPerformance is in charging mode. It then changes to a solid green light once the charging process has been completed. A solid blue ring indicates a pause in charging, and a flashing yellow ring tells you a system check is taking place. A flashing red corona ring indicates that the charging system is not active. The BMW 330e comes with its own standard charging cable – stored away in a special bag in the trunk and secured with a net – to connect it to the power supply. If no stationary charging options are available, the empty battery can be brought up to at least 50 percent of full charge while on the move by activating SAVE BATTERY using the eDrive button.

Level load compartment floor and unrestricted through-loading facility.
The neat integration of the high-voltage battery (gross capacity: 7.6 kWh, net capacity: 5.7 kWh) under the load compartment gives the BMW 330e iPerformance a level load compartment floor and full use of the through-loading system with 40:20:40 split rear seat backrests. The combined primary trunk capacity is 13 cubic ft. (vs. 17). Access to the secondary luggage area in the storage tray under the load compartment floor is restricted.

In order to maximize the car’s load capacity, the stainless-steel pressure tank was also positioned underneath the rear seat bench in semi-saddle tank form. It offers a usable capacity of 10.8 gallons (vs. 15.8). Fuel vapors in the BMW 330e iPerformance is trapped by an active carbon filter system, as is standard practice with vehicles powered by a combustion engine. In conventional drive systems, the fuel collected by cleaning out the active carbon filter is channelled back into the engine’s combustion process once the filter has reached a pre-set degree of saturation. However, the filter can only be cleaned when the engine is running and, as the engine in the BMW 330e is not constantly in use, this cleaning process happens far less frequently. The intelligent positioning of the electric drive system’s components assure the car’s finely balanced weight distribution – virtually 50 percent at the front axle, 50 percent at the rear axle.

BMW ConnectedDrive.
BMW ConnectedDrive links the driver and the vehicle with the environment. The technology enables access to the most important vehicle information. The driver can call up data – such as the battery charge, available ChargeNow public charging stations and journey distances covered – on the display or pre-set a temperature for the passenger compartment. The BMW 330e iPerformance comes as standard with auxiliary heating and cooling (output: 5 kW). These functions can be activated by a push of a button on the car key, via the BMW ConnectedDrive smartphone app or using a two-week timer on the iDrive operating system. Running the heating or cooling functions while the car is charging does not restrict its electric range.

The innovative BMW eDrive technology in the new BMW 330e iPerformance once again underlines BMW’s leading role in the premium segment when it comes to powertrain electrification. BMW eDrive technology includes a number of cutting-edge plug-in hybrid components and makes a significant contribution to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. BMW eDrive is one of the most cutting-edge elements of the ground-breaking BMW EfficientDynamics suite of technology.

Locally emission-free driving.
BMW eDrive is the new drive system technology used in all electrically powered vehicles from BMW i and the plug-in hybrid models from BMW. Alongside BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for combustion engines, intelligent lightweight design and optimized aerodynamics, BMW eDrive technology is therefore one of the most important elements in the EfficientDynamics strategy designed to increase power and further reduce fuel consumption. In addition, BMW eDrive offers the option of driving on electric power alone and therefore with zero local emissions – yet at the same time provides the option to cover long distances when the two drive systems team up.

BMW eDrive technology ensures extremely dynamic acceleration with instantaneous responses of the electric motor generating remarkable torque. The eBoost function enhances both drive systems under acceleration. The most important components of BMW eDrive technology are the synchronous electric motor (including the power electronics developed by BMW), the lithium-ion high-voltage battery and intelligent energy management. The latter ensures the electric motor and combustion engine in plug-in hybrid models work together as effectively as possible according to the situation at hand.

BMW eDrive technology was initially developed for the all-electric BMW i3 and BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car – which led the way in electric mobility in the premium sector. The fine-tuning of vehicle-specific elements, such as the battery cells, cooling management, power electronics and operating strategy, has involved the transfer of knowledge from the BMW i3 and BMW i8 to the development of new BMW iPerformance models. All components are adapted precisely to the vehicle at hand and optimized in terms of performance, efficiency, safety and durability.

BMW iPerformance technology.
BMW iPerformance technology essentially spans the electric motor, the lithium-ion high-voltage battery and the power electronics. Based on a shared eDrive strategy, all BMW plug-in hybrid models offer supreme power delivery by combining their two drive systems. BMW eDrive makes all-electric driving in urban areas and over cross-country routes a marketable proposition. An important element of the operating strategy is the condition based use of externally sourced and recuperated electric energy to maximize the vehicle’s efficiency. The components of the BMW iPerformance architecture are tailored to each particular vehicle concept and can be combined with four cylinder gasoline engines as well as with classical rear-wheel drive, BMW xDrive or electrified all-wheel drive.

Plug-in hybrid.
In plug-in hybrid vehicles, intelligent energy management ensures the combustion engine and electric motor work together to maximum effect in all driving situations. Their operating strategy is based on the vehicle starting up on electric power only. BMW’s plug-in hybrid vehicles prioritize electric mode at low and moderate speeds. Under greater acceleration and at higher speeds, the combustion engine is utilized. The boost function pulls the torque of both drive systems to maximize the car’s dynamic performance. BMW eDrive ensures that the combustion engine runs efficiently (electric assist) at higher speeds. When the route guidance function of the car’s navigation system is activated, the proactive function initiates an anticipatory operating strategy which optimizes efficiency and maximizes the electric driving experience.

Like the BMW i8, BMW iPerformance models (BMW X5 xDrive40e, BMW 330e, BMW 740e xDrive) can – at the touch of a button in MAX eDRIVE mode – run on all electric power up to 75 mph. The combustion engine only comes into play when the accelerator’s kick down threshold is passed. Four award-winners spanning a displacement range of 1.6 to 4.0 litres – BMW Group again emerges as the most successful auto manufacturer in the internationally renowned engine contest.

Munich / Stuttgart. Unbeaten titleholders and triumphant newcomers have secured the BMW Group’s renewed pre-eminence at the 2012 International Engine of the Year Awards. Powerplants guaranteeing efficient power delivery in current BMW and MINI models topped no fewer than four out of eight displacement categories. The quartet of trophy-winners comprised two four-cylinder engines, a straight-six and an eight-cylinder. Scooping up best-in-class wins were the 1.6-litre turbo unit of the MINI John Cooper S, the four-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that drives the new BMW 328i, among others, the straight-six with M TwinPower Turbo of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, and the V8 under the bonnet of the BMW M3. This year’s winners were selected by an international panel of judges made up of 76 motoring journalists from 36 countries. The Engine of the Year Awards were presented against the backdrop of the Engine Expo trade fair in Stuttgart.

With these latest accolades, the BMW Group continues its winning streak in the world’s foremost engine competition. Thanks to the Group’s outstanding development expertise in this area, it has managed to notch up more than 50 class and overall wins at the International Engine of the Year Awards since 1999. In 2012, yet again, engines of widely differing design created for BMW and MINI models dominated a large number of displacement categories. Moreover, the latest title-winners span an unusually broad output spectrum ranging from 135 kW/184 hp to 309 kW/420 hp.

The 2012 competition saw the prize in the 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre displacement class handed to the engine that drives the MINI Cooper S, in a reprise of its success last year. The 1.6-litre four-cylinder develops peak output of 135 kW/184 hp with the help of a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct petrol injection and variable valve control based on the BMW-patented VALVETRONIC technology. Among the key attributes of this unit are not only its eager power delivery but also exemplary efficiency for its class.

Likewise providing enhanced driving pleasure coupled with extremely low fuel consumption and emission figures is the new 2.0-litre engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The 180 kW/245 hp four-cylinder turbocharged unit with High Precision Direct Injection and VALVETRONIC instantly won over the judges to capture the trophy in the 1.8-litre to 2.0-litre category. This engine is currently powering the new BMW 328i Sedan, BMW 528i and BMW Z4 sDrive28i, as well as the BMW X3 xDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive28i models.

The top accolade in the 2.5-litre to 3.0-litre class went to a six-cylinder in-line engine whose technology has already wowed the judges several times previously. Both in 2007 and in 2008, this 3.0-litre powerplant with twin turbochargers, High Precision Injection and Double-VANOS took the overall prize in the Engine of the Year Awards. It serves as the basis for both the M TwinPower Turbo unit inside the BMW 1 Series M Coupe and the BMW TwinPower Turbo engine of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is. Delivering 250 kW/340 hp, this thrillingly high-revving straight-six has reached its highest output level. The upshot is truly outstanding performance that has garnered it a further Engine of the Year Award.

An achievement of this calibre is only exceeded by the string of successes claimed by the fourth BMW Group award-winner in 2012. For the fifth time in a row, the V8 engine of the BMW M3 high-performance sports car provides the measure of all things in the 3.0-litre to 4.0-litre displacement class. Bolstering the undiminished appeal of the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine are its hallmark M high-revving concept, peak output of 309 kW/420 hp and outstanding thrust. Beyond this, the eight-cylinder is compelling for its remarkable efficiency thanks to the Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration and other Efficient Dynamics technologies.

continuing the heritage of the legendary original 6 Series (1977-1989), it is
launching the modern expression of this icon, while paying homage to the
company's long tradition of luxury coupes.

The styling of the new 6 Series Coupe is bold, purposeful, dynamic and elegant
all at once. Its unique design with sleek and flowing lines, all supplemented
by the harmony of elegant surfaces, gives the new 6 Series its unique
character. The 6 Series Coupe excels in its classic proportions - the car is
long, low and wide. It projects an aura of strength and self-confidence. This
striking new Coupe will retail for $69,995 including destination and handling.

The modern design language of the exterior continues smoothly and consistently
throughout the interior. Similar to the new 5 Series, all the driving controls
are located directly on or around the steering wheel. All comfort functions, in
turn, are within easy reach from both front seats for convenience. The new 6
Series, again like the original, will not only be admired for its style but
will also be recognized as a driver's car of the first order.

The 4.4-liter V8 engine, already well known from the BMW 745i, ensures optimal
power and torque across the entire engine speed range. Featuring fully-variable
VALVETRONIC valve control, the engine develops 325-horsepower and a powerful
330 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. This enables the new 6 Series Coupe to
effortlessly reach its top speed of 149 mph (electronically limited).
Acceleration is equally impressive, with the BMW 645Ci with manual
transmission covering the sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds.

To convey this refined power to the rear wheels, BMW offers driving enthusiasts
the widest range of transmission choices-three different six-speed
transmissions:

* Six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic
* Six-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) featuring both a gearshift lever
and shift paddles on the steering wheel, like in Formula One race cars

Consistent use of intelligent lightweight technologies makes a significant
contribution to the outstanding driving comfort and high level of agility for
which the new 6 Series Coupe will become well known. This class-leading agility
is the result of the innovative combination of aluminum, steel and synthetic
materials throughout the body. The front section of the car is significantly
lighter than steel thanks to lightweight aluminum and composite construction.
The targeted weight reduction continues throughout - the trunk lid is
composite, the hood and doors are aluminum and the front fenders are
thermoplastic. All this contributes to a curb weight of 3781 lb (manual
transmission) with, of course, weight distribution close to the perfect ratio
of 50:50. This consistent reduction of weight ensures not only performance
befitting a sports car and exceptional agility, but it also contributes to an
outstanding level of fuel economy (EPA estimates for 6-speed automatic: 18 mpg
city, 26 mpg highway).

The lightweight all-aluminum suspension of the new 6 Series Coupe keeps
unsprung weight to a minimum. Also working to the driver's advantage are
myriad control systems such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) including
Dynamic Traction Control (DTC).
The 6 Series Coupe features BMW's Active Roll Stabilization, which almost
completely eliminates body roll. Part of the Sport Package in the U.S. will be
BMW's unique Active Steering, which electronically varies the degree to which
the front wheels turn in relation to steering input from the driver. Driving
Dynamic Control (DDC) is also offered as part of the Sport Package. First seen
on the Z4 roadster, this feature gives the engine an even more spontaneous
reaction to the gas pedal, influences steering in relation to road speed,
allows the automatic or SMG transmission to hold gears longer, and provides
faster SMG shifts - all at the touch of a "Sport" button.

In addition to all the safety features characteristic of a BMW, the new 6
Series Coupe utilizes run-flat tires, allowing the driver to continue for a
certain distance even when a tire is completely flat. Adaptive Headlights,
which enhance visibility, illumination, and improve the driver's field of
nighttime vision, are also available as an option.

The standard power tilting glass panorama moonroof gives the interior an even
more spacious and brighter feel, especially since the panorama roof is much
larger than a conventional moonroof. It offers a vent feature and an electric
sliding interior shade.

The Head-Up Display (HUD), available as an option for the new BMW 6 Series at a
later date, displays useful information directly in front of the driver.
Designed to provide optimum clarity, BMWs HUD allows the driver to concentrate
on the road ahead at all times by presenting relevant information directly in
the driver's line of vision, on the windshield. Active Cruise Control (ACC),
which senses the speed of vehicles traveling ahead, and adjusts the BMW's speed
to maintain a safe following distance, is also available. Last but certainly
not least, the optional Logic7 audio system with Digital Sound Processing (DSP)
gives the car's occupants a level of audio quality previously only offered by
high-end home entertainment systems.

In terms of spaciousness, the new BMW 6 Series measures 190.2" in length, 73.0"
in width and just 54.1" in height to offer ample interior space that is quite
remarkable for a sports car. As a 2+2-seater, the BMW 6 Series gives rear seat
passengers ample freedom of movement, and the large luggage compartment offers
space comparable to many sedans.

All-New X5 4.8is

Following close on the heels of the X5 facelift, the new X5 4.8is will offer an
enhanced, sportier driving experience beyond the realm of the other X5 models.

The new X5 features an enlarged version of the VALVETRONIC 4.4-liter engine
featured in the X5 4.4i. This new 4.8-liter V8 power plant produces
355-horsepower and 360 ft-lbs of torque, and is coupled with a 6-speed
STEPTRONIC automatic transmission. This abundant power is driven through
20-inch W-rated performance tires - 275/40 front and 315/35 in the rear.
Massive 14-inch front/12.8-inch rear disc brakes bring BMWs most potent SAV to
a quick and sure-footed stop.

For 2004, all X5 models have been treated to a freshened exterior design, with
an entirely (yet subtly) revised front end, new taillights and several fresh
new colors.
The long list of standard features include rain-sensing windshield wipers and
adaptive headlights with automatic headlight control and self-dimming mirrors.
Also included with this package are adjustable and heated rear seats, a ski
bag, and a digital compass mirror. For the audiophile, an in-dash CD player is
included as is a 6-CD changer. In fact, the list of standard features is so
extensive, that all option packages are included in the list price of $70,495
including destination.

As with the other X5 versions, xDrive, BMW's newest all-wheel drive system,
helps to ensure optimum performance in all driving situations. The xDrive
intelligent all-wheel-drive system is a completely new design, and it sets new
standards among all-wheel drive vehicles for road holding and agility. The
perfect match to the X5 4.8is' abundant power, the xDrive system performs
stepless and variable distribution of torque between the front and rear wheels
at an unprecedented speed.

BMW's xDrive reacts faster than other systems because it not only makes use of
the information obtained from the wheel sensors, which signal when any of the
wheels are spinning, but also data collected from Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC) system sensors. Yaw rate, the information regarding rotational movement
of the vehicle itself, and the steering wheel position both supply important
data concerning the current situation. This enables xDrive to distribute drive
power ideally and at any given moment between the front and rear wheels, for
instance during cornering, thereby significantly minimizing under- or
oversteer.

In addition to the clear increase in agility and driving enjoyment, xDrive also
provides great safety benefits. As a result of its fast reaction time, the new
system provides greatly improved road holding characteristics. Whether the
driving surface is rough or smooth, it only takes a few milliseconds once
traction is lost between the wheel and the road surface for the drive forces to
be redistributed to the wheels that still have traction. The electronically
controlled multi-disk clutch loses no time and reacts immediately.

The X5 4.8is will be available at BMW SAV centers in late Spring, 2004.

330Ci Performance Package
The widely acclaimed Performance Package for the 2004 330Ci Coupe and
Convertible will also be debuted today at the Los Angeles International Auto.
Originally introduced on the 330i Sedan in January 2003, the Package will now
be offered on Coupes and Convertibles as well, for a retail price of $3900. The
330i Performance Package has received rave reviews from the press and owners
alike on the strength of its performance and handling prowess. The extension
of the Performance Package to these two additional models will raise the
driving experience of the 330Ci Coupe and Convertible to an even higher
standard.

The 330i and 330Ci Performance Package has been created exclusively for the
North American market for enthusiasts by enthusiasts at BMW Individual, a
division of BMW M GmbH. Every aspect of the driving experience has been
enhanced by the Performance Package. Engine modifications, which include
different camshafts and performance-modified Digital Motor Electronics, yield a
10 horsepower increase to 235 for the 3.0-liter in-line six. A six-speed
manual transmission is already standard; however, with the Performance Package
it will include a shorter shift lever. The package also includes a shorter
final drive ratio. The benefits of these modifications are immediately evident
- the 330Ci Coupe with Performance Package will accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in
5.9 seconds-about half a second faster than a standard 330Ci. To match this
power boost, a new sports suspension-more aggressively tuned than the 330Ci's
standard sport suspension-is mated to 18-inch wheels with mixed-size
performance tires. In addition to the wheels and tires, the exterior of the
330Ci Performance Package is distinguished by its Aerodynamic Package, high
gloss Shadowline trim and an exhaust that not only appears, but also sounds
more aggressive.

The look and feel of the interior has been refined with cloth and Alcantara
sport seats matching the Alcantara sport steering wheel. An anthracite
headliner and Black Cube aluminum trim complete an ambiance tailored to the
enthusiast. Attractive Silver Cube aluminum trim is optional at no extra cost.
The instrumentation includes red needles while the tachometer reflects the
modified engine's 300 higher rpm limit. Production of the 330Ci Coupe and
Convertible Performance Package will begin in March 2004 with the first cars
arriving at BMW centers in April.

A new sports car now embodies the very core of the BMW brand in its most
original style the M3 CSL. Taking up the heritage and legendary success
of BMW's famous lightweight coupés which gained fame in touring car racing back
in the '70s, the engineers of BMW M have once again created a
purist, thoroughbred sports car consistently designed and built to the highest
standard of excellence.

In recognition of the fact that the weight spiral constantly going up can only
be brought to a halt by radically reducing all moving masses, BMW M?s
engineers, in developing this new car, have turned a thrilling lightweight
concept into reality. For the new BMW M3 CSL is not only more powerful than the
