Munich. For classic car fans in North America, the
Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has long been the perfect
season-opening event. And the 28th running of the spring get-together
shone the spotlight on exquisite rarities from days gone by, as well
new models from Bavaria. BMW and BMW M GmbH joined forces to present
the new editions of their Sports Activity Vehicles and Sports Activity
Coupés – produced at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Introduced to the
public for first time were the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6, plus the BMW
X5 M Competition high-performance models, with their extensively
  upgraded design and technology.

Precise design modifications, including new headlights and the latest
version of the fully digital control/operation system BMW iDrive with
BMW Curved Display, bring fresh cutting-edge appeal to the exterior
and interior of the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. And taking driving
pleasure to new heights are the new and more powerful drive system for
the BMW X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid model and the likewise new engines
with 48V mild hybrid technology fitted in all other model variants.
The new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition have a
visibly honed exterior and, for the first time, a shared front-end
design. The cabins of both vehicles feature state-of-the-art
technology in the form of the BMW Curved Display including the BMW
iDrive control/operation system with M-specific screen content. Their
extensively modified V8 engines now also work with 48V technology and
deliver their maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp with even greater
urgency and in even more impressive style.

All four models handed their world premieres at Amelia Island also
benefit from a significantly expanded portfolio of systems for
automated driving and parking. For example, the cars can now be parked
and complete manoeuvres carried out from outside the vehicle using an
  Apple iPhone.

BMW Group Classic glitters with racing legends and design icons.

Joining the fray alongside the sporty new arrivals from BMW and BMW M
at Amelia Island was a true legend of motor sport – the BMW 3.0 CSL.
BMW Group Classic brought the fabled racer to the show to mark a very
special anniversary. Exactly 50 years ago, Toine Hezemans (NL) and
Dieter Quester (AT) drove the 3.0 CSL to victory in the touring car
(“Tourisme Spéciale”) class at the Le Mans 24 Hours race. The
reliability of the 3.3-litre engine in the number 51 car played a key
role here, as the pairing also finished 11th in the overall standings
  at the prestigious endurance classic.

At Amelia Island, the 3.0 CSL racing coupé took turns on display in
the BMW Group Classic space with the series-produced version of the
two-door car also known as the “Batmobile” (on account of its
spectacular rear wing). This final development stage of the BMW 3.0
CSL with 3.2-litre engine producing 206 hp, of which only 167 examples
were made, is also celebrating its 50th birthday this year. Adding the
cherry to the cake of the BMW Group Classic line-up was the BMW 507.
The roadster’s reputation as one of the most iconic BMW cars of all
  time endures to this day.

BMW Z3 and BMW Z4: hallmark BMW roadster feeling across four generations.

The run-up to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance saw almost three
decades of roadster history reunited. A road trip through Florida
brought together a handful of BMW Z3 and BMW Z4 models from four
generations. The line-up of cars selected for the tour from southern
Florida to the venue for the classic car event in the north-east of
the Sunshine State ranged from the BMW Z3 to the latest BMW Z4, which
recently gained a fresh round of design and equipment updates.

The BMW Z3 was the first model built for the global market at BMW
Group Plant Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina. The
roadster was unveiled in 1995 and made its first public appearance in
the blockbuster James Bond movie GoldenEye. It remained on
sale until 2002, when it was replaced by the first BMW Z4. With its
eye-catching lines and cutting-edge equipment details, the Z4 put
clear ground between itself and its predecessor. Seven years further
on, the second-generation BMW Z4 provided a fresh interpretation of
the roadster art – with its elegantly sweeping lines and, most
notably, a retractable metal hardtop which could be lowered and raised
again electrohydraulically at the touch of a button. The third
generation of the Z4 has been putting smiles on the faces of open-top
driving pleasure aficionados since 2018. Crisp proportions, a
classical – and electrically powered – soft-top roof and a new level
of dynamic talent set it apart from the crowd, as does the
  unique-in-its-segment straight-six engine of the range-topping model.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Press Release,X5,G05,Z4,X6,X5 M,X6 M,G29,G06,F95,F96,Product,BMW,BMW M

Richmond Hill, ON. New design details, expanded
standard equipment, electrification across-the-board, and advancements
in digital technology define the next stage in the evolution of BMW’s
X5 Sports Activity Vehicle and X6 Sports Activity Coupe. The entire
range of powertrains has been comprehensively reengineered. The
plug-in hybrid drive in the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e has significantly
more power and a greater purely electric range than its predecessor.
And the introduction of 48V mild-hybrid technology to the V8 engine
has increased its power, performance, and refinement. Also pointing
the way into the future are new systems for automated driving and
parking, plus the latest-generation iDrive control system with the BMW
Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8.

Production of both models will begin in April 2023 at BMW Group Plant
Spartanburg, South Carolina – the global competence centre for BMW X3,
X4, X5, X6, X7, and the high performance BMW XM. Base Canadian MSRPs
  are as follows:

The new BMW X5: new design elements, illuminated BMW kidney
    grille.

The front fascia of the 2024 BMW X5 is characterized by a new design
for the signature BMW headlights and kidney grille. The outlines of
the new headlight units are 35 millimetres narrower. Its arrow-shaped
daytime driving light elements point outwards and also serve as turn
  signal indicators.

The Illuminated Kidney Grille can be specified for the first time as
an option on BMW X5 xDrive50e, and X5 xDrive40i. The illumination is
activated when one of the doors is opened and can be switched on or
off manually by the driver via the iDrive menu.

The BMW kidney grille is now bordered by sculpted surfaces which
bring a modern appeal to the front end. Vertical air curtains
positioned at the outer edges emphasize the width of the new X5, and
the lower air intake has a new horizontal trim detail and triangular
  apertures in its outer areas.

Newly designed air breathers, LED rear lights with X motif.

The air breathers in the front side panels of the BMW X5 also have a
new design, with a dynamically curved element at the front – finished
either in chrome or in black, depending on model or package – and
three horizontal blades at their trailing edge.

At the rear, newly designed rear lights feature striking contours of
fibre-optic light elements. The traditional L-shape is reflected
horizontally, creating an ‘X’ motif within the rear lights.

The new BMW X5 can be specified with the optional M Sport Package,
which adds a front apron with M-specific design, gloss black roof
rails, gloss black window surround, and a rear apron with a
dark-shaded inlay and trapezoidal tailpipe trim.

The new BMW X6: expressive front end design and standard M
    Sport Package.

The BMW X6 created the Sports Activity Coupe segment, and in its
third generation it continues to embody a powerful sporting character
and forceful visual presence. The long, swooping roofline and crisp
contour lines create a dynamically stretched silhouette.

As on the X5, the new X6 features slim headlight units with
arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements. The dynamic intent of the
new BMW X6 is futher highlighted by the now standard M Sport Package,
distinguished by an octagonal design element below the BMW kidney
grille, prominent side apertures, and generous use of black surfaces.

Powerful styling at the back with slim lights extending well
    into the tailgate.

M-specific side skirts and gloss black window surround express the
athletic character of the new BMW X6. The taut surfacing of the flanks
and muscular shoulder lines transition smoothly into a powerful design
at the rear. The slim taillights reach far into the tailgate, and
their light signature is defined by the familiar L-shape of the rear
  light and brake light bars.

Flagship models with distinctive design features.

At the top of their respective model ranges, the new BMW X5 M60i and
BMW X6 M60i feature unique design details. Features including double
bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps
in high-gloss black, and exhaust tailpipe trim in a quad-pipe style
speak to the high performance attributes of the 8-cylinder models. The
new BMW X6 M60i also has a subtle rear spoiler in high-gloss black.

The M Sport Pro Package can be added as an enhancement to any X5 or
X6 model already equipped with the M Sport Package. Visually, the M
Sport Pro Package adds a kidney grille surround in matte black,
exhaust tailpipe trim in black chrome, and darkened Shadowline
Headlights. Also included in the M Sport Pro Package, are M Sport
brakes with a choice of red or blue calipers, and an M Sport exhaust
system (standard on the M60i models, not available for the BMW X5 xDrive50e).

New paint colours include Marina Bay Blue metallic for the X5 M60i
and Isle of Man Green metallic for the X6 M60i. Blue Ridge Mountain
metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic and Frozen
Pure Grey metallic are new additions to the colour range.

From the start of production, customers will be able to choose from
around 40 BMW Individual Manufaktur special paintwork shades for their
new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. These exclusive paint options are applied
by hand in a meticulous process and the spectrum of colours is being
  expanded all the time.

BMW Curved Display with intuitive touch control and natural
    voice interation.

The fully digital BMW Curved Display is at the heart of the interior
redesign for the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. It is made up of a
12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control
display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches – both located behind a
single glass surface. The touch control functionality of the BMW
control display has brought about a significant reduction in the
number of buttons and controls in favour of digital control for
  various functions.

Sensafin surfacing for the dashboard and a highly functional
    Light Bar.

The newly designed dashboard serves as the perfect stage for the BMW
Curved Display. Its horizontal structure emphasises the width of the
cabin, while the surfacing in standard leather-like Sensafin deepens
the premium character of the interior. The central air vents in the
new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are extremely slim and integrated into the
instrument panel almost out of sight.

Another new interior feature is the ambient Light Bar with
crystalline surface structure and crisp LED backlighting integrated
below the trim element in the front passenger area. Interior light
distribution, brightness, and choice of 15 colours can be configured
via the iDrive menu. The ambient lighting system’s range of functions
also includes the Welcome Light Carpet – which projects a unique
graphic on the ground alongside the vehicle when the doors are
unlocked or opened – and pulsating light signals that appear on the
inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running.

Control panel in the centre console with new toggle gear
    selector.

Additional touch-sensitive surfaces are found on the new version of
the control panel on the centre console. It is home to the iDrive
controller, engine start/stop button, and the buttons activating the
electric parking brake, and the settings for the optional Adaptive
2-Axle Air Suspension. Also found here are the Driving Experience
Control buttons and the newly designed toggle gear selector.

Exclusive glass controls for the selector toggle, the start/stop
button, and the iDrive controller are available as a standalone option
or included with the optional Premium Excellence Package.

Standard: Sport seats in Sensafin upholstery.

The standard sport seats in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 offer
outstanding comfort as well as lateral support when the road gets
twisty. Comfort Seats with ventilation for front passengers are
equipped as part of the Premium Enhanced and Excellence Packages, and
also available with massage functions. The standard Sensafin
upholstery, with its bold quilting and decorative perforation, can be
ordered in Silverstone, Coffee, Cognac, or Black (and striking Tacora
Red/Black is available on X6). Merino leather is also available in
  Ivory, Coffee, Black, and Tartufo.

Powertrains with 48V mild-hybrid technology and an innovative
    plug-in hybrid system.

A thoroughly updated range of engines, newly enhanced with
electrification, enables the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 to deliver driving
pleasure with greater poise, assurance, and efficiency. The V8 engines
in the M60i models now benefit from 48V mild-hybrid technology, while
the new X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid gains an extensively upgraded
combustion engine and BMW eDrive technology that endows it with nearly
100 more horsepower while increasing the range of purely electric
driving to an estimated 64 km, an increase of 14 km. NRCan figures
  remain to be confirmed.

More power, more electric range: the BMW X5 xDrive50e.

The new BMW X5 xDrive50e combines a substantially revised gasoline
engine with an electric drive unit to enhance both dynamic capability
and efficiency. The new powertrain produces a maximum system output of
up to 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque while permitting a preliminary
estimated electric-only range of up to 64 km.

The combustion engine and electric motor play an equal role in
bringing these results. The latest incarnation of the 3.0-litre inline
6-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology utilizes the
highly efficient Miller combustion cycle, which shortens the time the
intake valves are open. This power unit also features redesigned
combustion chambers and intake ports, a new dual (direct and port)
injection system, and a cylinder head with an integrated exhaust
manifold. The VANOS variable camshaft timing now works electrically.

The electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission on the new BMW X5 xDrive50e boasts a substantial increase
in power output and a novel innovation for boosting torque delivery.
The new synchronous motor produces a nominal output of 194 hp – 83
more than the previous version. A pre-gearing stage is used to
increase the effective torque produced by the electric motor to a
maximum 331 lb-ft at the transmission input for the motor. In this
way, the compact electric motor is able to provide the sort of torque
boost that could normally only be achieved using a far larger and
heavier unit. The improved build-up of power resulting from the
pre-gearing stage between the electric motor’s rotor and the
transmission’s input shaft makes a clear difference both when
accelerating off the line and when putting in a quick burst of speed
for passing. The new BMW X5 xDrive50e needs just 4.8 seconds to sprint
from 0-100 km/h in preliminary testing.

The electric motor draws its energy from a BMW 5th
generation high-voltage lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor.
The battery can store 25.7 kWh of usable energy, an increase of almost
25 percent compared with the preceding generation. A new Combined
Charging Unit supports both single-phase and three-phase charging,
doubling the maximum AC charging rate to 7.4 kW. Together with the
electric motor’s excellent efficiency and the system of intelligent
energy management, including adaptive recuperation, this results in an
estimated electric range of up to 64 km (estimated range of up to 64
km according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test
  procedure standards).

Latest-generation 48V mild hybrid technology for the internal
    combustion engines.

Electrification in the form of 48V mild hybrid technology enhances
the effortless power delivery in the ICE variants of the new BMW X5
and BMW X6, while also increasing their efficiency. The 6 and
8-cylinder combustion engines are combined with an 8-speed Steptronic
Sport transmission with an integrated electric motor. The electric
motor generates an output boost of up to 12 hp and 147 lb-ft of
torque, helping the engine to deliver a smooth, dynamic drive along
with high efficiency. The electric motor has the additional effect of
enabling smoother operation of both the Automatic Start/Stop function
and the coasting function active when the ECO PRO mode is selected.

The energy required for the electric power boost is stored in a 48V
battery located in the engine compartment. It is charged during
overrun and braking by means of adaptive recuperation and also feeds
the regenerated energy to the vehicle’s electrical system.

New V8 for the M60i models.

The BMW X5 M60i and X6 M60i models are both powered by a newly
developed TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. The 4.4-liter power unit can
trace its genes back to engines used in motorsport, and utilizes the
thermodynamic benefits of a cross-bank exhaust manifold,
bank-symmetrical turbochargers, and external engine oil cooling. In
addition, a reinforced crankshaft drive, further developed
turbocharging with a blow-off valve, a new oil pump, and a
weight-minimized oil sump all play a role in increasing the engine’s
efficiency. The engine is paired with 48V mild hybrid technology to
produce superior response and power delivery under acceleration.

In both models, the S68 engine produces 523 hp and peak torque of 553
  lb-ft. It propels the new X5 M60i and new X6 M60i from 0 to 100 km/h
in just 4.3 seconds in preliminary testing.

More power, lower emissions: the new inline 6.

The power unit under the hood of the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X6
xDrive40i is part of a new generation of inline 6-cylinder engines, as
is the engine in the BMW X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. The 3.0-liter
unit’s output of 375 hp in these two models is up by 40 compared its
predecessor, while peak torque rises by 51 lb-ft to 383 – and can be
boosted to as much as 398 lb-ft with the input of the mild-hybrid
system. It enables both the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and new BMW X6
xDrive40i to dash from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds in preliminary testing.

This version of the new straight-six engine also benefits from
extensive innovations affecting the combustion process, camshaft
control, injection, ignition system and exhaust gas routing. It also
features the latest version of VALVETRONIC fully variable valve
control. Its switchable rocker arms on the exhaust side allow gas
exchange to be shut off entirely if required, thereby reducing the
engine’s frictional torque on the overrun by around two thirds,
resulting in greater recouperation of braking energy.

The latest-generation 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission fitted to
all variants of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 comes with a host of
innovations over and above the electric motor integrated into its
housing. For example, the unit’s internal efficiency, vibration
damping and isolation from rotational irregularities have all been
optimized. A new electric transmission oil pump and a system of
torsion dampers serve to increase not just efficiency, but also shift
smoothness and driving comfort. And the shift characteristics are now
adapted to the Driving Experience Control switch setting. The
transmission automatically switches from the D setting to S when SPORT
  mode is activated.

In the 8-cylinder models and 6-cylinder models with the M Sport
Package, drivers will also be able to make use of the Sprint function
when a quick burst of speed required. Here, the transmission
automatically shifts into the lowest usable gear when the driver pulls
the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second. At the same time,
all of the powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their
sportiest settings and the mild-hybrid system’s electric boost effect
  is activated.

Optional chassis systems in newly structured packages.

The Adaptive M Suspension fitted as standard on the X5 M60i, X6
  xDrive40i, and X6 M60i models and optional on X5 xDrive40i, results in
a noticeably more direct connection to the road. Electronically
controlled dampers refine handling dynamics as well as primary ride
comfort. Electromagnetically adjustable hydraulic valves allow the
compression and rebound settings to be adapted in unison to suit the
driving situation. The dampers respond adaptively both to road surface
conditions and to driving style. The driver can use the Driving
Experience Control switch to choose between a comfort-focused mode and
a stiffer damper setting for a sportier response.

The optional Adaptive 2-Axle Air Suspension (standard on X5
xDrive50e) with automatic self-levelling employs an electrically
driven compressor with pressure reservoir to maintain the optimum ride
height at all speeds, regardless of how much load is being carried.
The result is comfortable, assured handling. The ride height is
automatically lowered by 10 millimetres at speeds above 140 km/h.

Integral Active 4-Wheel Steering for greater agility, comfort
    and maneuverability.

Integral Active 4-Wheel Steering is now standard on M60i versions of
the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 and has a beneficial effect on the vehicles’
  agility, driving comfort, and maneuverability.

With Integral Active 4-Wheel Steering, the rear wheels are turned in
either the same direction as or the opposite direction to the front
wheels, depending on road speed. This results in highly dynamic
cornering abilities and assured lane changes at high speeds.
Furthermore, the rear wheels can now be turned by up to three degrees
until the vehicle is nearly stopped, reducing its turning circle when
maneuvering into and out of parking spaces.

All 2024 X5s and X6s are fitted as standard with 20-inch wheels
mounted on all-season runflat tires. Performance runflat tires in a
21-inch size are standard on M60i models, and performance non-runflat
tires are available in a 22-inch size. Customers can choose from a
selection of standard, M, and BMW Individual alloy wheels in 20, 21,
  and 22-inch sizes.

Advanced Driver Assistance Package
now offers Highway Assistant.

The new Highway Assistant, part of the optional Advanced Driver
Assistance Package, ushers in a new dimension of assisted driving in
the 2024 BMW X5 and X6, bringing with it new levels of convenience and
stress-free travel over long distances. It allows the driver to take
their hands off the steering wheel when driving on limited access
highways at speeds up to 130 km/h under certain highway driving
conditions. Drivers must, however, always maintain focus on the road
ahead and be prepared to assume responsibility for steering.

Assisted View in the instrument cluster gives the driver an overview
of the activated systems and their functionality. The central area of
the information display is reserved for a three-dimensional mock-up of
the vehicle and its surroundings. Here, the driver can see an image of
the cars, trucks and motorcycles detected by the cameras and sensors
in the driver’s current lane, along with those in any adjacent lanes.

Parking Assistant Professional: enter and exit spaces by
    smartphone.

Drivers can also benefit from greater assistance when parking and
maneuvering. The standard Reversing Assistant offers the option of
automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver
does not have a clear view, such as multi-story parking garages or
narrow curving driveways. The vehicle can store the steering movements
for any section the vehicle has just driven forward through at no more
than 36 km/h. The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for
distances of up to 50 metres by steering it back along the same route.

On models fitted with the optional Parking Assistant Professional,
the Reversing Assistant is able to store steering movements for
distances of up to 200 metres and then reproduce them in reverse.
Furthermore, drivers now have the ability to control maneuvers into
and out of especially tight parking spaces from outside the vehicle
using the My BMW App on their smartphone (available for Apple iPhones
with operating system iOS 16.2 or later).

In addition, the Manoeuvre Assistant now included in the Parking
Assistant Professional package is able to store far more complex
maneuvers using GPS data and the trajectory data from steering
movements and perform them as an automated routine. As many as ten
maneuvers at different locations, covering a distance of up to 200
metres each and a combined total of 600 metres, can be recorded. When
the vehicle arrives at a memorized starting point, the Manoeuvre
Assistant will be able to carry out all the tasks required to complete
the maneuver, controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering, as
well as changing gear to move forward or reverse. If necessary, the
vehicle can switch between the two directions of travel repeatedly
while carrying out all the gear changes and steering inputs, for
example when negotiating its way through a parking garage with little
space and sharp corners. While the automated maneuver is in progress,
the driver can focus on monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings.

Drivers have the choice of controlling both the automated parking
functionality and the Maneuver Assistant’s actions either from inside
the vehicle or remotely using their iPhone. It is also possible to
switch between the two modes, meaning that once an automated parking
or other maneuver has begun, it can be interrupted at any time and
then resumed from inside the vehicle or from outside using a smartphone.

BMW Curved Display and latest-generation BMW iDrive.

The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are fitted with the latest-generation
BMW iDrive multi-sensory vehicle interface powered by BMW Operating
System 8. Boasting new-generation software as well as powerful
connectivity and data processing, it takes the interaction between the
driver and vehicle into the digital future. The new BMW iDrive system
offers more ways for drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal
control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment, and communication
functions and also to use digital services.

The user experience is supported by the seamless interaction between
the touchscreen BMW Curved Display, the voice control, the iDrive
controller, and the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. The
display and operation system has been upgraded to include the latest
version of the BMW head-up display, which offers a larger display
area, enhanced graphics and additional content.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with state-of-the-art graphics.

The BMW Curved Display in the new BMW X5 and the new BMW X6 is formed
by a 12.3-inch information display and a control display with a screen
diagonal of 14.9 inches. The screens are housed together behind a
curved glass surface, so they merge into a single, fully digital,
high-resolution unit. With its ergonomic, driver-centric positioning,
the BMW Curved Display makes the already intuitive touch control even
  more user-friendly.

The BMW Curved Display’s state-of-the-art graphics and the operation
system’s menu structure have been designed with a smartphone-style
appearance. The clearly structured arrangement of widgets on the
control display’s home screen provides a simple overview of the menu
options and can be configured by the driver as desired.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The new generation of BMW iDrive also sees the BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant gain additional skills. Instructions in natural
speech can be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window or
operate the panoramic glass sunroof, for instance. Various functions
of the driver assistance systems in the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 can
likewise be voice controlled. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
is also capable of recognizing user behavior and proactively making
suggestions to the driver on how the vehicle can best be used.

When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new graphics
appear in the displays to emphasize the system’s interactive
character. The graphic “turns” towards the speaker, thereby
visualizing how the system is listening attentively to what is being said.

Precision navigating with Augmented View in the information
    display.

The new Augmented View function included as part of the BMW Digital
Cockpit Professional enables accurate guidance while driving by
supplementing the navigation system’s map view. A live video stream
from the driver’s perspective can be shown on either the control or
information display and augmented by supplementary graphics that
provide more specific, situation-based information. When dealing with
confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is
integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best
  turn-off for the planned route.

Welcome Scenario with lighting effect and personal greeting.

The user experience starts before the driver has even reached the
vehicle thanks to a newly devised Welcome Scenario. Ultra-wideband
(UWB) radio technology determines the precise location of the key or
compatible smartphone relative to the vehicle. Once the distance to
the vehicle drops below three metres, the coordinated welcome sequence
begins. It starts with an orchestrated lighting effect using the
exterior and interior lights, including the light carpet. The vehicle
automatically unlocks when the driver is about 1.5 metres away. Once
inside, the BMW Curved Display shows a choreographed start-up
animation with a personal greeting, along with handy suggestions and
information. Finally, the BMW ID settings are loaded, and the
  smartphone connected.

BMW Digital Key Plus.

BMW’s Comfort Access keyless entry system now also includes the BMW
Digital Key Plus. This enables customers to lock and unlock their BMW
  X5 or BMW X6 via security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio
technology from a compatible smartphone running either the iOS or
Android operating system. A conventional car key is no longer
required. Simply approaching the car or walking away triggers the
unlocking or locking process; there is no need for the customer to
even remove their smartphone from their pocket.

The BMW Digital Key Plus can be set up using the My BMW App. The car
owner can also share it – and therefore access to the vehicle – with
up to five other users who have a smartphone with either iOS or Android.

Emotionally engaging drive sound, even in locally
emission-free driving mode: BMW IconicSounds Electric for the BMW X5
    xDrive50e.

With BMW IconicSounds Electric included as standard, the joy of
driving while generating zero local emissions is accompanied by a
special sound design inside the vehicle that provides authentic aural
feedback to every movement of the accelerator pedal.

The car’s soundtrack was developed as part of a collaboration between
the BMW Group and film score composer Hans Zimmer. Different versions
of the model-specific drive sound are created depending on the mode
selected with the Driving Experience Control switch. Pressing the
start/stop button additionally triggers an inspiring acoustic tone
that signals the car is ready to drive.

Richmond Hill, ON. BMW is proud to announce the
limited-edition BMW X5 and X6 Black Vermilion for model year 2022.
This exclusive X5 xDrive40i and X6 xDrive40i combine the already high
level of performance, comfort and luxury found in every Spartanburg,
South Carolina-built X5 and X6 Sports Activity Vehicle with an
unmistakably striking and aggressive exterior design and
  edition-exclusive equipment and details.

The central focus of the new Black Vermilion edition is the exclusive
interplay between black and red. The high-gloss black kidney grille
with red vertical bars creates a stark contrast to the BMW Individual
Frozen Black Metallic paint finish. Darkened Individual Shadowline
Headlights with the signature blue ‘X’design of the BMW Laserlights,
complete the distinctive look of the front end.

The M Sport content further emphasizes the dynamic character of the
BMW X5 and X6 Black Vermilion editions. It is composed of
aggressively-styled front and rear bumpers as well as the High-Gloss
Black Window Surround. Behind the 22-inch, double-spoke 742M light
alloy wheels with an edition-exclusive Orbit Grey matte finish, red
high-gloss M Sport brake calipers create a striking visual highlight.
An M Sport exhaust system makes sure that the sound of the X5 and X6
Black Vermilion edition matches its looks.

The cabin of the new BMW X5 and X6 Black Vermilion edition showcases
additional exclusive elements, including BMW Individual Full Merino
Black leather with red piping and contrast stitching for front and
rear seats. Likewise, the binding on both the front and rear floor
mats is finished in red to complete the look. A finely crafted Edition
logo on the cupholder cover in BMW Individual Piano Black finish
  emphasizes the limited model’s exclusivity.

Richmond Hill, ON. BMW is pleased to announce the new
2020 X6 Sports Activity Coupé. More than ten years ago, BMW combined
the attributes of the Sports Activity Vehicle with the more aggressive
DNA of a Coupé to create the X6 and the new Sports Activity Coupé
class. Since then, over 443,000 of the extroverted BMW X6 have been
  purchased by customers world-wide.

The new 2020 BMW X6’s muscular form and sharp, creased lines are the
external visuals for a combination of the most advanced powertrain,
chassis, safety, driving assistance and technology systems that BMW
has to offer. All with the added benefit of a luxurious interior space
for up to five passengers, all-surface and all-weather capability and
an available factory trailer package rated for up to 3,400 kg (7,200
  lb) of towing capacity.

  Exterior design

The dimensions of the 2020 third-generation X6 have grown slightly in
overall length (+ 26 mm), wheelbase (+42 mm) and width (+ 15 mm).
While height has been reduced by 6 mm for improved aerodynamics and a
lower center of gravity improving vehicle agility.

The new X6 also serves as the premiere for the optional illuminated
BMW kidney grille. The illumination can be activated by unlocking and
locking the vehicle or manually. The illuminated grille is part of the
daytime running light feature and can remain on while the vehicle is
  in motion.

The large, single-piece BMW kidney-grille with active air slats is
flanked by slim, trapezoidal Adaptive Full LED headlights. The large
openings of the bumper and sharp-creased lines impart a more
aggressive appearance to the new X6. Standard 21-inch alloy wheels
fill the openings of the X6’s pronounced fenders and can be upgraded
even further with 22-inch wheels. The roofline flows into a
double-bubble design towards the rear ending in subtle, twin spoilers
above the rear hatch glass. The wide rear fender arches blend into the
upswept rear hatch design, forming an additional, functional
split-rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics and downforce. Very slim
L-shaped LED taillights adorn the top of the rear hatch, high above
the exhaust surrounds which are integrated into the sculptured lower
  rear diffuser panel.

The new design elements, from front-to-rear, complete the powerful
and capable vehicle aura which owners have come to value from BMW’s
  Sports Activity Coupé vehicles.

The 2020 X6 xDrive40i comes standard with M Sport package. Exterior
trim such as the BMW kidney grille frame and tail pipe surrounds are
finished in chrome, while the large air intakes include high-gloss
black elements. In the rear, the spoiler and diffuser are painted in
body colour, while the lower bumper is finished in dark shadow.

On the X6 M50i, the exterior trim is finished in high-gloss black,
while the BMW kidney grille, exterior mirror caps, model badge and
exhaust tailpipes are painted in Cerium Grey. The calipers of the M
Sport brakes, standard on the X6 M50i, are finished in blue.

  Interior design

The interior arrangement of the 2020 X6 has been refocused on the
driver while at the same time offering impeccable quality and finish
from all surfaces to coddle the passengers in glove-like comfort.

Vernasca leather, Sport seats, and Sensatec dashboard are standard on
all X6 models. Extended Merino leather, BMW Individual Full Merino
leather and Walknappa leather dashboard are all available as upgrades
to suit every level of desired luxury.

Standard specification for the new BMW X6 includes 2.5-zone automatic
climate control, while a four-zone system is optional. Another
innovation is the newly developed panoramic glass roof, whose glass
surface area is 83 per cent larger than on the outgoing model. The
optional Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge, meanwhile, brings a
particularly exclusive ambience to the interior of the new BMW X6
during the hours of darkness. More than 15,000 graphic patterns in the
glass roof are illuminated and generate a display reminiscent of a
starlit sky. Six different colors are available for the illumination
of the Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge. The BMW X6 comes as standard
with ambient lighting, which includes the Welcome Light Carpet. This
feature illuminates the approach to the doors when they are unlocked
or opened, enhancing safety when getting in and out of the car. The
new BMW X6 can also be equipped with optional thermoelectric cup
holders, which are integrated into the front section of the center
console and keep drinks containers cool or warm, as desired.

The new BMW X6 can be specified as an option with glass applications
for selected controls, adding unique visual and haptic experience to
the interior. The glass applications are available for the
transmission selector lever, the iDrive Controller, the start/stop
button and the audio volume knob. The optional Bowers & Wilkins
Diamond Surround Sound System includes a seven-channel amplifier with
1,500-watt output and 20 speakers to generate an impressive 3D audio
experience for all passengers. The wireless charging option allows
compatible mobile devices to be charged wirelessly in the tray
positioned ahead of the cup holders. The rear seats can be folded down
in a 40:20:40 combination to increase the cargo space from 580 to 1525 litres.

  Paints finishes and interior trim

The new 2020 BMW X6 is offered in one standard, non-metallic paint
color, seven metallic paint finishes and two BMW Individual metallic
  paint finishes.

The standard non-metallic paint finish is Alpine White. Optional
metallic paint finishes include Carbon Black Metallic, Black Sapphire
Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, Flamenco Red Metallic, Arctic Grey
Metallic, Manhattan Green Metallic and Riverside Blue Metallic.
Optional BMW Individual paint finishes are Tanzanite Blue II Metallic
  and Ametrine Metallic.

Standard, interior Vernasca leather trim is offered in seven colours;
Black, Coffee, Cognac, Tacora Red, Ivory White, Canberra Beige and
  Black with contrast Brown stitching.

Optional Extended Merino leather trim is available in six colours;
Black, Coffee, Tartufo, Amarone/Black, Ivory White and Ivory
  White/Night Blue.

Optional BMW Individual Full Merino leather interiors are offered in
six color combinations: Black, Coffee, Tartufo, Amarone/Black, Ivory
  White and Ivory White/Night Blue.

  6-cylinder Power and performance

The BMW X6 xDrive40i is powered by the latest iteration of BMW’s
TwinPower 3.0 liter inline 6-cylinder Turbo engine. The new engine
produces 335 hp between 5,500 – 6,500 rpm, an increase of 33 hp over
the previous model and 330 lb-ft of torque between 1,500 – 5,200 rpm,
an increase of 35 lb-ft of torque.

The new 6-cylinder engine features an exhaust manifold integrated
into the cylinder head, a twin-scroll turbocharger with quicker
response and direct injection technology working at an increased
maximum pressure of 350 bar. A housing with improved flow
characteristics and turbines with reduced masses both help the
turbocharging system to ensure rapid build-up of pressure, and the
charge air cooler has been incorporated into the intake system. The
latest version of the VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing system
makes the sort of swift, high-precision adjustments that facilitate
instantaneous power delivery and improve engine efficiency. The
exhaust manifold embedded in the cylinder head cooling jacket, the new
oil module with integral heat exchanger and the split-cooling valve
  delivering on-demand control

of the cooling system all serve to optimize the engine’s temperature
management. Efficiency is given a further boost by the low-friction
belt drive and the reduced weight of both the crankshaft and oil pump.

This allows the X6 xDrive40i to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in 5.5
seconds (0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds), 0.9 seconds faster than the
outgoing model, and features an electronically limited top speed of
  210 km/h when equipped with all-season tires and 250 km/h when
  equipped with performance tires.

  M Performance V8 Power

The X6 M50i is powered by a new and immensely potent version of BMW’s
4.4-liter eight-cylinder TwinPower turbocharged engine. This updated
engine features two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling
located within the V-shaped space between the cylinder banks, High
Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and
Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. This combination delivers 523
  hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque between 1,800 –
4,600 rpm - an increase of 78 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque over the
  previous model’s output.

A new aluminium alloy has been used to increase the strength of the
engine block. The wire-arc sprayed iron coating for the cylinder walls
serves to reduce frictional losses. Reinforced, Grafal-coated pistons
and optimized piston rings are designed to endure the stress on the
crank drive that comes with the extra output and torque. To enhance
engine smoothness, torsional vibration is minimized with the help of a
  viscous damper on the crankshaft.

The X6 M50i comes standard with an M Sport exhaust system allowing
for the tuned, selectable exhaust note to be adjusted by the driver
with the press of a button. M Sport exhaust is also standard on the X6 xDrive40i.

The BMW X6 M50i accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.3
seconds (60 mph in just 4.1 seconds), 0.5 seconds quicker than the
outgoing X6 model. Top speeds are similarly electronically limited to
210 km/h when the vehicle is equipped with all-season tires and 250
km/h when equipped with summer performance tires.

Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive

The eight-speed Sport Steptronic transmission’s new control
electronics help to increase the powertrain’s overall performance and
efficiency. Intelligent connectivity enables the Sport automatic
transmission to adapt its shift strategy according to the route and
driving situation by working with the navigation system and if
equipped, combining this data with information from the Active Cruise
Control system’s radar sensor. This makes it possible for the
transmission to shift proactively instead of reactively insuring that
the vehicle is always in the correct gear for the upcoming road conditions.

The BMW xDrive system in the X6 xDrive 40i and X6 M50i works to
maximize traction, agility and directional stability. In dynamic
driving situations, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system has a
rear-wheel bias, sending drive power exclusively to the rear wheels,
when added traction is not required. The X6’s traction capabilities
are aided by the electronically controlled rear M Sport differential,
which is standard on the X6 M50i and optional on the X6 xDrive40i. It
optimizes the transfer of power between the left and right rear wheels
allowing the X6 to power out of corners with greater speed.

  Chassis, Suspension and Steering

A double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension designs give
the new BMW X6 the tools to deliver agile yet comfortable road
handling plus enhanced traction off the beaten track. The X6 Sports
Activity Coupé comes as standard with Adaptive M Suspension which
allows the driver to select either of two damper settings with the
Driving Experience Control switch, placing the emphasis on a sporting
  or comfort-biased driving experience.

The M Sport Plus Package with active roll stabilization and Integral
Active Steering enhances the new X6’s handling with exceptionally
agile and dynamic driving qualities. The Active Roll Stabilization
system works using electric swivel motors and enables swift and
precise compensation for body roll when powering through twists and
turns. Not only does this improve agility and directional stability
when entering corners, it helps optimize traction when accelerating
out of the corners as well. The Active Roll Stabilization system on
the new BMW X6 also increases straight-line comfort by actively
countering the vibrations triggered by bumps on one side of the road.

The electromechanically operated Integral Active Steering is also
available as an individual option. By turning the rear wheels in
either the same direction as or the opposite direction of the front
wheels, depending on the road speed, it lends itself to more nimble
cornering, effortless lane changes. Integral Active Steering makes
turning into and out of tight parking spots much easier, while also
increasing directional stability when overtaking at motorway speeds.

The new BMW X6 is available with two-axle air suspension including
automatic self-levelling. The suspension’s air supply is controlled
individually for each wheel using an electrically driven compressor
with pressure reservoir, making it possible to balance out an unevenly
loaded car. Thanks to the linkup with the Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC) system, the vehicle load registered by the air suspension’s
sensors can also be factored into braking modulation. The X6’s ride
height can be changed at the touch of a button and the driver can
choose from five different modes. The driver is also able to adjust
the body’s ground clearance for off-road driving to a maximum of 40 mm
above the standard setting. Another button lowers the car by 40 mm
below the default height in preparation for loading or unloading
items. The height of the X6 above the ground can therefore be varied
through up to 80 mm, making it significantly easier to get in and out
of the car and to load and unload items from the cargo area.

The new BMW X6 xDrive 40i is offered with an optional Off-Road
Package, which includes an electronically controlled M Sport rear
differential. Included in the package are four off-road drive modes
specially tuned for driving over snow, sand, gravel or rocks. At the
press of a button, drivers can activate the ideal settings for the
vehicle’s ride height, the xDrive system, the transmission control and
the DSC system’s intervention. Accelerator pedal response also adapts
  to the driving mode selected.

  Wheels, Tires and Brakes

The 2020 BMW X6 xDrive40i comes standard with 21-inch alloy wheels
with 275/45R21 (front) and 315/35R21 (rear) performance run-flat tires.

The xDrive 40i model offers a wide selection of optional wheels and
tires including; 20-inch wheels with all-season run-flat tires,
21-inch wheels with performance run-flat tires and 22-inch wheels with
  performance non-run-flat tires.

The 2020 X6 M50i comes standard with 22-inch alloy wheels with
275/35R22 (front) and 315/30R22 (rear) performance non-run-flat tires.

A space-saver spare can be selected to complement the selection of
  wheels with non-run-flat tires.

The X6 M50i also comes equipped with standard M Sport brakes which
are optional on the X6 xDrive 40i.

Back-Up Assistant: Unique, high-precision guidance in tight spaces

Back-Up Assistant offers an unmatched level of assistance when
leaving a parking space or maneuvering in a confined area. The Back-Up
Assistant takes over steering to maneuver the vehicle mirroring the
path most recently used in the forward direction. This system makes
reversing for a distance of up to 50 metres an effortless task in the
new 2020 BMW X6. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator
and brakes and monitor the surrounding area. The system is initiated
by pressing a button when the vehicle is stationary and the gear
selector is in the “P” position. The steering movements made during
the vehicle’s last forward maneuver are stored by the system and
retained. This means the Back-Up Assistant can be used to maneuver the
new BMW X6 backwards out of a parking position that it drove into
  forwards the previous day.

The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the
standard rear-view camera and the optional Top View, Panorama View and
3D View which are part of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a
360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings in the Center
Display. In addition, drivers can use the Remote 3D View feature, part
of the BMW ConnectedDrive App, to access a three-dimensional live
image of their vehicle and surroundings on a smartphone no matter
where they are at that moment.

  Driver Assistance Systems

The 2020 BMW X6 is available with a wide variety of standard and
optional driver assistance systems. The systems really come into their
own when driving longer distances by relieving the strain on the
driver in monotonous situations, such as traffic jams or slow-moving
traffic. They enhance comfort and safety both in urban traffic and on
longer trips by providing targeted assistance in complex traffic
situations. The driver assistance systems process camera images as
well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor
the vehicle’s surroundings, to warn of potential hazards and to
minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs.

Standard equipment includes Frontal Collision Warning with City
Collision Mitigation. Depending on the situation, the system can bring
the vehicle to a halt to either avoid a collision or minimize its consequences.

The optional Driving Assistance Professional contains Active Blind
Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Surround View Camera, Parking
Assistant, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Speed Limit Information. On
top of that, the Driving Assistance Professional offers comprehensive
assistance for comfortable and safe driving. This package includes
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. It can be used at
speeds up to 210 km/h and maintains the desired speed while taking not
only the traffic situation into account, but also the selected
distance to vehicles in front. If required, the system is able to
brake the car to a stop then pull away again automatically after being
stationary for up to 30 seconds, meaning greater comfort in stop-start
traffic. Camera images and data from a front radar system are used for
  distance control.

Another component of the Driving Assistance Professional Package is
the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection. This
system is designed to help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the
correct path with an active turn of the steering wheel. Besides
emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to
vibrate, active side collision protection also uses active steering
intervention to help avoid a collision. Moreover, this package
includes Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways,
which allows for even more relaxed driving at speeds lower than 60
km/h during highly congested highway traffic situations. The Driving
Assistance Professional Package includes Evasion Aid, which now also
reacts to pedestrians and Front Cross Traffic Alert – which reduces
the danger of a collision when maneuvering forwards towards roads that
are obstructed from the driver’s view.

  The latest-generation Head-Up Display.

The latest generation of the BMW Head-Up display system features a
larger projection area, optimized graphics and additional content. The
BMW Head-Up Display projects information directly into the driver’s
field of vision where it can be viewed without any need for them to
divert their eyes from the road. This includes details of vehicle
speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control
messages, status indicators and warnings from the assistance systems,
detailed route guidance and turn instructions, as well as telephone
and entertainment lists. The displayed information and style can be
adjusted via the new M mode button on the center console.

Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional in the 2020 BMW X6 combines a new
display and control concept and the ultimate in connectivity to create
a superb all-round package. The latest-generation of the iDrive is
composed of a high-resolution digital 31 cm (12.3”) instrument cluster
display behind the steering wheel and a 31 cm (12.3”) center display.
The system offers many hardware upgrades including new haptic controls
for the iDrive controller, an advanced tablet-like touch interface,
stunning visualizations, and the largest displays in BMW’s vehicle lineup.

This latest system blends the strengths of previous iDrive concepts
with the modern ways in which people expect to interface with their
popular electronic devices. The multi-modal approach of the iDrive
touch controller, large touchscreen center display, cloud based voice
control, and gesture control allow users to interact in the way of
  their choosing.

The seventh generation of iDrive, which runs the latest BMW Operating
System, has a cutting-edge, fully digital design and is geared to the
driver’s needs by allowing him or her to customize the system to his
or her own preference with customizable widgets of information. This
new level of personalization is then stored in the BMW Cloud and can
follow the customer to other BMW vehicles. Information from categories
such as driving, entertainment, navigation, connectivity, and the
vehicle info itself, can be selected in nearly any combination in any
of four layouts on the Center Display. Multiple pages can be created
and easily accessed with a simple swipe across the screen with your finger.

To maximize the capabilities of the large 31 cm (12.3”) digital
instrument cluster, the traditional gauges have been finessed into an
all-new design pushing the speedometer and tachometer gauges to the
outer edges of the display as geometric bands. This new design opens
space in the middle for routing and navigation. Information from the
center display can also be shown within the tachometer. Additionally,
your driving mode will determine your visual display style.

Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the
Navigation Professional system, two USB-C ports, plus Bluetooth
interfaces. The driver can be automatically detected and personal
settings activated either using the traditional vehicle key or by
downloading the driver’s personal settings the BMW Cloud.

Drivers can enjoy the full benefits of the car’s intelligent
connectivity capabilities through vehicle apps such as news, weather,
office and online search. Other capabilities include Intelligent
Emergency Call – which automatically summons swift assistance in an
emergency – and regular updates for the navigation system’s maps.

BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility.

BMW Connected is the companion app for BMW drivers. Intelligent
connectivity helps users to reach their destination easily and with
minimal stress – and not only from within their car; BMW Connected is
an all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and
  their smartphone with their vehicle.

At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows the
app to connect the car with the customer’s digital devices, including
the iPhone and Apple Watch. For instance, the BMW Connected app can
import appointments and addresses from the customer’s calendar entries
straight into the navigation system to begin route guidance. The
system calculates the optimum departure time based on real-time
traffic information and notifies the driver with a message on their
smartphone when it is time to leave. As the vehicle is linked up via
the Open Mobility Cloud, it is able to access the calculated route
directly when the navigation system starts up.

boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment
it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold
around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven
not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive
models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the
BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models
is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW
continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By
offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a
front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated
its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will
secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the
future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either
transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as
well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe
  with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.

BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came
with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor
Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately
reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists
took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This
very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away
from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made
for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new
champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers
from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes
typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of
this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM)
system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the
earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of
the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed
either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC).
The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution
ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely
  dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW
rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the
all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to
the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains
the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque
steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the
latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of
power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner,
further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i
“Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent
between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed
differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential
were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the
front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability.
This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was
offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and
  including the E46 series).

  1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the
BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now
electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured
multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear
power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with
driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate
clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by
electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system
monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the
Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about
brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a
class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and
precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics
even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In
the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered
in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle
concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first
Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving
dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the
time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in
this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of
38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic
control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X
(Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured
the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle
challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept,
there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at
BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s
all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation
  of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up
the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle
segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered
even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only
premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was
introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon
extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely
fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive
worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to
continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving
situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the
electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability
Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position
and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s
first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike
conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least
one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of
oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively
corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on
the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring
models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced
in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold
worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its
second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid
  drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly
established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to
present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical
dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For
the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined
with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power
split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled
agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on
overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further
perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile,
in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its
range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive
system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6
M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the
  all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many
years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of
its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also
combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes
the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing
engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and
taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by
an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW
model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision,
BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal
combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time
before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7
Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive
Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6
Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5
Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe
models of the new BMW 4 Series.

  Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with
the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers
a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and
contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is
available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW
also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second
generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW
xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This
was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined
its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new
  front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step
in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system.
This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in
hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving
the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the
  front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances
that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was
followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in
hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to
full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics
technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and
effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent
hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal
combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all
times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The
drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the
full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series
makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end
BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts,
and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in
October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow
intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active
Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

Activity Coupé with full hybrid drive offering a driving
experience quite unique both in the segment of BMW X models and in the
hybrid segment as a whole. Through its combination of a V8 gasoline
engine and electric drive, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers a
significant increase in dynamic performance together with a reduction
of fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 20 per cent. This
joint enhancement of driving pleasure and efficiency clearly proves
that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is a typical BMW in the hybrid segment.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers the driver three significant
options: to drive under electric power alone, to use the power of the
combustion engine, or to benefit form the combination of both drive
modes. Driving completely free of CO2 in the electric mode is possible
up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph. The combustion engine then cuts in
as required (as a function of load conditions) and is automatically
switched off when driving in overrun at a speed of less than 65 km/h
  or 40 mph.

The drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of
a 300 kW/407 hp V8 power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo
Technology and two electric motors developing 67 kW/91 hp
and, respectively, 63 kW/86 hp. Maximum system output is
  357 kW/485 hp, peak torque is 780 Newton-metres/575
lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful
  hybrid vehicle in the world.

Through its unique balance of performance and fuel economy the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 sets new standards both in the hybrid vehicle
segment and in the overall market of BMW X models. Acceleration
from a standstill to 100 km/h comes in 5.6 seconds. Average fuel
consumption in the EU5 test cycle is 9.9 litres/100 km (equivalent to
28.5 mpg imp), the CO2 emission rating is 231 grams/kilometre.

Integration of the two electric motors in the two-mode active
transmission of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 allows two self-sufficient
modes of operation. One mode is for setting off in particularly
dynamic style and for driving at low speeds, the second is for driving
at a higher speeds under optimum conditions. This ensures all the
benefits of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, with maximum efficiency under
all loads and at all speeds. At the same time the seven-speed
automatic transmission provided by the electric motors together with
three planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches ensures all
the supreme driving behaviour, smoothness and performance so typical
  of BMW.

When applying the brakes or taking back the gas pedal kinetic energy
is converted into electrical energy and stored in the high-performance
battery. To provide this benefit either one or both electric motors
act as a generator, depending on driving conditions. The recuperation
efficiency and output achieved by the system is 25 times greater than
with Brake Energy Regeneration featured so far in BMW’s
  production models.

Electrical energy is stored in an NiMH high-performance battery with
a capacity of 2.4 kWh. The temperature of the high-voltage battery is
controlled as required and with maximum efficiency by liquid cooling
interacting with the air conditioning and an external heat exchanger.

The central electronic control unit ensures appropriate interaction
of the combustion engine and electric drive crucial to the outstanding
efficiency and unique qualities of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. It
converts high-voltage direct current from the high-performance battery
into three-phase alternating current for the two electric motors in
the hybrid transmission. It also coordinates all functions of the
hybrid system including the distribution of torque and power between
the combustion engine and the electric motors as well as the selection
  of gears.

Over and above the electric motors, the high-performance battery also
supplies electrical energy to the power-consuming items linked to the
12-volt on-board network. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is equipped
with electromechanical power steering and an electrical climate
compressor both remaining fully functional also when the combustion
engine is switched off and enhancing the overall efficiency of the
vehicle to an even higher standard through their on-demand consumption
  and uptake of energy.

While braking the generator builds up stopping forces in the electric
motors acting efficiently on all four wheels and precisely coordinated
with the hydraulic brake effect in accordance with the driver’s
stopping and deceleration requirements. This provides not only optimum
stopping power, but also the brake feeling so typical of BMW under all
driving conditions including the all-electric mode. A further point is
that like the BMW X6, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes with Dynamic
Stability control incorporating an enhanced range of functions such as
Dry Braking and Fading Compensation as well as an electromechanical
and hydraulic parking brake complete with an Auto-Hold function.

In its driving behaviour and motoring comfort, the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 offers all the standards provided by BMW’s
latest X models, without the slightest difference between the
electrical and the combustion drive mode. Intelligent xDrive
all-wheel-drive technology with permanent, variable power distribution
front-to-rear enhances the unique driving dynamics of the vehicle to
  an even higher standard.

The current operating mode and function of the drive system is
clearly presented by appropriate displays in the instrument cluster
and in the Control Display itself. The charge level of the
  high-performance battery
at the disposal of the driver and the
current operating mode are shown by appropriate gauges beneath the rev
counter. Being informed of the power uptake when driving in the
electric mode, the driver may if he wish maintain that mode longer in
the interest of extra efficiency. And if he wishes the driver may also
call up information on the current flow of energy in the Control Display.

The particularly prominent Powerdome on the engine lid gives the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 a very distinctive look versus the
“regular” BMW X6 as a significant visual highlight.
“ActiveHybrid” model designations on the tailgate trim bar
and on the front doors, the designation “BMW ActiveHybrid”
on the door entry covers on either side, 19-inch light-alloy wheels
(or, as an option, 20-inch light-alloy
wheels in aerodynamically
optimised Streamline design), as well as exterior paintwork in
exclusive Bluewater metallic for the first time on a BMW X6 serve
furthermore to highlight the particular character of this unique car.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 combines innovative drive technology
with the unique concept of a Sports Activity Coupé. The very
progressive and exclusive character of this outstanding vehicle is
further underlined by a particularly wide range of standard features
as well as attractive options. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as
standard with features such as comfort seats, automatic air
conditioning, cruise control, the BMW Professional navigation system
and Park Distance Control. A further important feature is the
electrical opening and closing function on the tailgate. Options
include an extended range of nappa leather upholstery in an exclusive
Ivory White/Black colour combination complete with double blue seams,
a glass sliding/vent roof, a trailer towbar, as well as the complete
range of BMW ConnectedDrive including innovative driver assistance systems.

The safety features offered by the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 include
frontal and side airbags, head airbags at the side, crash-activated
headrests at the front, runflat tyres as well as a Tyre Defect
Indicator enabling the driver to monitor the pressure individually in
each tyre. BMW Adaptive Headlights complete with a Bending Light
  function supplement the
bi-xenon headlights with their daytime
  driving lights featured as standard.

Fascinating Efficiency:
The BMW ActiveHybrid X6.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology combines superior driving dynamics with
equally superior efficiency pointing far into the future, brining
together both of these qualities to offer a truly unique driving experience.

The world’s first Sports Activity Coupé with full hybrid
drive therefore capitalises on the options offered by combining the
combustion engine and the electric motor with a standard of perfection
never seen before. BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers a
significant increase in driving dynamics and at the same time reduces
fuel consumption by approximately 20 per cent versus a comparable
vehicle powered by a combustion engine alone. The result is even
greater Sheer Driving Pleasure combined with enhanced fuel economy and
CO2 management providing the kind of progress to make the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 a typical BMW in the hybrid market.

The overall drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6
consists of a 300 kW/407 hpV8 gasoline engine with BMW
TwinPower Turbo Technology and two electric synchronous motors
delivering 67 kW/91 hp and, respectively,
63 kW/86 hp. Maximum system output is
  357 kW/485 hp, peak torque is 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft.

Precisely controlled interaction of the three power units optimises
the overall efficiency of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 at all speeds,
with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Top
speed of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is limited electronically to 236
km/h or 146 mph (250 km/h or 155 mph with the optional Sports Package,
with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 9.9 litres/100
km (equal to 28.5 mpg imp) and a CO2 emission rating of 231 grams per kilometre.

BMW’s first full hybrid model is able to run exclusively on
electric power – and that is entirely free of CO2 – up to
a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph, with the combustion engine being
  activated automatically whenever required.

Ideal variation of the two drive modes for enhanced efficiency and
dynamism is ensured by The two-mode active transmission provides the
ideal combination of the two power modes for enhanced efficiency and
dynamic performance at all times. With the two electric motors, three
planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches, drive power is
transmitted through a seven-gear automatic transmission operated by
the driver of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 via an electronic gear
selector lever and, respectively, shift paddles on the steering wheel.

BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system spreads out
engine power variably between the front and rear wheels.

The electric motors receive their energy from an NiMH
high-performance battery positioned beneath the floor of the luggage
compartment and feeding electric power also to the car’s
on-board network. Luggage compartment capacity is therefore the same
as on the “regular” BMW X6 with its combustion engine.
When applying the brakes or taking back the gas pedal kinetic energy
is converted into electrical energy and is stored in the
high-performance battery. To provide this function either one or both
of the electric motors acts as a generator, feeding electric power
generated without the slightest increase in fuel consumption directly
into the high-voltage battery. Subsequent use of this energy to
provide extra drive power significantly reduces the consumption of fuel.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology raises the development of drive
systems enhancing both efficiency and dynamism in one to a new,
unprecedented standard, clearly confirming BMW’s superior
competence in development in this area. Now the introduction of this
innovative technology in such an exceptional vehicle concept adds a
particularly fascinating motoring experience through the efficiency
achieved in this way. Through its size, character and driving
dynamics, the world’s one and only Sports Activity Coupé
is particularly well-suited to combine the progressiveness and the
potential of BMW ActiveHybrid technology to a standard never seen before.

Unique efficiency ensured by two-mode active transmission.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology has been developed specifically for use
in a particularly dynamic vehicle in this segment and for a broad
range of practical use going far beyond city traffic as such. The big
advantage, therefore, is the overall optimisation of drivetrain
efficiency in all speed ranges and under all conditions.

The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT (electric
continuously variable transmission) operating in two separate modes.
One mode is for setting off with particular power and for driving at
low speeds, the second is for motoring at high speeds.

When setting off only one of the two electric motors is activated.
Then, as soon as the driver requires more power, the second electric
motor automatically activates the combustion engine and subsequently
serves as a generator providing a permanent supply of electric power.

When driving steadily at a higher speed most of the power required is
delivered by the combustion engine in a largely mechanical process.
Here again, one of the two electric motors acts as a generator.

Together with the mechanical components, the electric motors form a
joint transmission unit providing the optimum transmission ratio at
all times as a function of driving conditions. The mechanical link
  within the two-mode
active transmission is provided by three
planetary gearsets in a configuration dividing the drive power
generated by the combustion engine and the two electric motors into
two transmission modes and therefore ensuring a degree of variability
in combining the two power sources conventional hybrid drive would not
  be able to provide.

The two operating modes of the electric motors are supplemented and
enhanced by fixed transmission ratios providing a total of seven gears
for full use of the highly efficient hybrid function throughout the
vehicle’s complete range of operation and at the same time
maintaining the driving performance so typical of BMW.

Conventional but unique all in one: V8 gasoline engine with BMW
TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection.

The combustion engine is a technically unique eight-cylinder featured
for the first time in the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The world’s first V8
gasoline engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the
two rows of cylinders excels in particular through its smooth
development of power setting in from the start and continuing in an
ongoing surge throughout the entire speed range. The exceptionally
spontaneous and direct response of this V8 with BMW TwinPower Turbo
Technology results directly from the compact configuration of the
engine allowing short manifolds as well as large cross-sections on the
  intake and exhaust side.

Displacing 4.4 litres, this outstanding eight-cylinder delivers
maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp consistently maintained
between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. Superior torque of
600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft is maintained all the way from 1,750
to 4 ,500 rpm, with High Precision Injection ensuring precise
supply of fuel at all times.

Piezo-injectors positioned in the middle between the valves ensure a
smooth, efficient and clean combustion process, the V8 naturally
fulfilling both the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II
  limits in the USA.

Compared with the power unit featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i, this
new engine has been modified in numerous respects to the specific
requirements of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. The first point is that
there is no starter, no alternator and belt drive for the climate
compressor and hydraulic pump on the power steering. The main and
low-temperature circuits in the cooling system have been modified for
all-electric operation, the low-temperature circuit already serving to
cool the charge air in the combustion engine being used additionally
  to cool the power electronics.

A specifically designed hybrid engine cover, finally, marks a clear
difference versus the power unit in the BMW X6 xDrive50i.

Electric motors for enhanced performance on no extra fuel.

When accelerating the eight-cylinder power unit of the
BMW
ActiveHybrid X6, joining forces with the electric motors, ensures
optimum efficiency and dynamic performance. As soon as the driver
requires more power the two electric motors fed by the high-voltage
energy battery supply additional torque for enhanced performance. This
boost effect significantly increases the overall output of the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6, without any increase in fuel consumption.

While the two electric motors have almost the same output, they have
been modified in their performance characteristics to meet individual
requirements. The power delivered is 67 kW/91 hp and.
respectively, 63 kW/86 hp, with peak torque of 260
  Newton-metres/192 lb-ft and 280 Newton-metres/206 lb-ft.

The electric motors support the combustion engine effectively
throughout the entire speed range, the additional electrically
generated drive power serving to reduce the power output required on
the combustion engine when driving steadily at a higher speed. This
shift in load is perfectly controlled at all times to give the overall
system enhanced efficiency and its maximum effect under practical
  driving conditions.

The electronic control unit is also able to provide a consistent,
ongoing surge of power, maximum power being generated when shifting
gears through the so-called response boost effect. When kicking down
the accelerator for maximum acceleration, the control unit generates
stationary boost right from the start in the initial downshift phase,
interaction of response boost and stationary boost ensuring a very
spontaneous and direct response to every movement of the gas pedal.

Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, with peak torque of
  780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world,
with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds
and top speed is limited electronically to 236 km/h or 146 mph (or,
respectively, 250 km/h or 155 mph with the optional Sports Package).

The unique positon of BMW ActiveHybrid X6 within the BMW X
segment as a whole follows very clearly and convincingly from the
comparison of these performance figures, on the one hand, with the
vehicle’s fuel consumption and emission ratings, on the other.
The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 combines its supreme dynamism with
equally fascinating efficiency, with fuel average fuel consumption in
the EU test cycle of just 9.9 ltr/100 km (equal to 28.5 mpg imp) and a
CO2 rating of 231 grams per kilometre.

All-electrical driving mode reducing emissions to zero.

With its combination of two-mode active transmission and
high-performance battery, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to run
on its electric motors alone. This makes it a zero emission vehicle
under such conditions, fulfilling even the strictest requirements
foreseen for the future and ensuring the highest conceivable level of mobility.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 may run on electric power alone
regardless of the ambient temperature, minimum operating temperatures
being required only for the engine coolant, transmission fluid and
high-voltage battery. A further requirement is that the
  high-performance battery is adequately charged.

Top speed in the electric mode is 60 km/h or 37 mph, maximum
  range is
2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles).

While driving electrically, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 retains all
its safety and comfort functions. The brakes remain fully operative
thanks to electronic vacuum supply, not requiring the combustion
engine to develop their full effect. The same applies to the EPS
Electronic Power Steering, with steering assistance being generated as
required and with maximum efficiency by an electric motor.

Even the air conditioning remains fully available without any
restrictions, running efficiently on an electrical climate compressor.
And since the high-performance battery supplies electric power to the
complete 12-volt on-board network through a voltage converter
regardless of the driving mode, all other power-consuming items such
as the lights and the on-board entertainment system remain fully
functional at their usual, consistent level.

Recuperation: electric power generated without additional fuel consumption.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 features an enhanced version of Brake
Energy Regeneration already used in BMW’s current models running
on a combustion engine alone, generating the electric power saved in
the high-performance battery. In this case the electric motors act as
generators in overrun and when applying the brakes in order to feed
electric power into the high-voltage battery unit, again in the
  interest of maximum efficiency.

This uses energy otherwise simply lost in conventional vehicles as
heat escaping through the brakes – and depending on road speed,
one or both of the electric motors may perform this function.

The power delivered by the generator is approximately 50 kW, about 25
times as much as the power provided so far by Brake Energy Regeneration.

Generator delivering electrical brake power.

In the generator mode the two electric motors supply a lot of the
energy required to slow down the vehicle whenever necessary. Indeed,
the stopping power generated in this way is up to 3 metres/sec2
or, respectively, 0.3 g in a purely recuperative process,
significantly reducing the load acting on the mechanical brake system.

Sensotronic Brake Actuation (SBA) in the BMW Active Hybrid X6
may be used at any time without a direct mechanical connection between
the brake pedal and the hydraulic circuit. Pedal movement is recorded
by sensors and split up by a control unit into brake power generated
in a regenerating and in a hydraulic process. At the same time an
integrated pedal force simulator generates the usual brake feeling for
the driver as an additional factor in this brake-by-wire solution.

The active brake servo builds up brake pressure with electrical
control according to the signals emitted by the control unit. To
ensure brake power assistance also in the all-electric mode, the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 comes furthermore with an electrical under-pressure
pump replacing the vacuum pressure in the intake system of the
combustion engine on a conventional vehicle. A mechanical fallback
function, in turn, guarantees full operation of the brake system in
the event of a failure or deficiency in the electrical system, in
which case the stopping power required is generated by the hydraulic
system alone, like on a conventional vehicle.

The primary task of the SBA system is to split up the brake power
required by the driver into a regenerating and a hydraulic brake
factor. Via the xDrive powertrain, the hybrid system in the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 is able to transmit brake forces to all four wheels
generated by the stopping power of the recuperative electric motors.
And whenever the stopping power required exceeds the level of 3
metres/sec2, the control unit builds up additional brake force through
the mechanical brake by means of the active brake servo.

In braking situations critical to driving stability the control unit
receives additional signals from the DSC Dynamic Stability Control,
intervening in the brakes and engine management to keep the vehicle
safely on course. This ensures safe braking manoeuvres under all
conditions, with all driving stability systems developing their
complete effect when required regardless of whether the stopping power
needed is generated electrically or hydraulically.

A further point is that all driving stability systems are tailored in
their operation to the dynamic character of the Sports Activity
Coupé also on the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. DTC Dynamic
Traction Control selected at the touch of a button, for example,
provides maximum traction and drive power
on loose surfaces such
as snow or sand thanks to its higher slip thresholds. And with the DTC
mode activated, the driver may opt for a particularly sporting style
of motoring all the way to a controlled power slide in bends.

BMW xDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive for extra performance,
optimum driving stability and supreme traction.

The sports-oriented driving behaviour of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6
is also attributable to xDrive all-wheel-drive technology. Permanent
all-wheel drive with electronically controlled, variable distribution
of drive power front-to-rear gives the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, like
all BMW X models, not only superior traction, but also enhanced
  driving dynamics.

BMW xDrive qualifies as an intelligent all-wheel-drive system in
particular through the smooth division of drive power ensured by a
power divider with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch
feeding the appropriate level of power to the right axle with optimum
wheel contact and grip on the road.

Under normal conditions BMW xDrive spreads out drive power to the
front and rear axle in a 40:60 split, sensors consistently measuring
wheel slip both front and rear. The system is able to vary the balance
of drive power within fractions of a second, BMW xDrive, unlike
conventional all-wheel-drive systems, thus looking ahead and not only
responding when a wheel is already spinning.

Benefiting from these abilities, BMW xDrive raises the driving
dynamics of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 to an even higher level by
recognising even the slightest tendency to over- or understeer right
from the start and taking appropriate counter-action.

EPS Electronic Power Steering for even greater driving comfort.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the first BMW X model to feature EPS
Electronic Power Steering. This allows active steering assistance both
when driving with the combustion engine and in the all-electric mode.

EPS provides optimum steering assistance under all conditions to give
the driver that special feeling so typical of the BMW brand. Another
advantage is the further reduction of fuel consumption, EPS
significantly reducing the energy required for steering assistance
compared with conventional, hydraulic power steering, since Electronic
Power Steering only becomes active when steering assistance is
actually required or desired by the driver. So when driving straight
ahead in a straight line, for example, the electric motor does not
  consume any energy whatsoever.

Electronic Power Steering on the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes
complete with fully integrated speed-related Servotronic steering
assistance, the reduction of assistance at high speeds ensuring not
only safe directional stability but also extremely precise steering
behaviour in bends as well as the safe feeling at high speeds again so
characteristic of a BMW. At low speeds, on the other hand, for example
when parking, extra power assistance significantly reduces the
  steering forces required.

Liquid cooling for even greater performance on the
high-performance battery.

The high-voltage battery featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6
comes in nickel-metal hydrid technology (NiMH). Capacity is 2.4 kWh,
with 1.4 kWh available actively for practical use. Maximum
output, in turn, is 57 kW, with
the battery’s control unit
permanently determining the output level currently available as well
as the charge status of the battery.

The high-performance battery comes with its own liquid cooling system
incorporating a heat exchanger to cool the battery through the flow of
air from the outside and, additionally, through the cooling circuit in
the air conditioning. These two circuits are activated either
individually or in combination with one another, depending on current
requirements, the control unit selecting the most effective and
efficient cooling option as a function of ambient temperature and the
temperature of the high-voltage storage unit.

Cooling by the air conditioning is activated by an appropriate switch
valve, with the electrical climate compressor being switched on
automatically whenever required. The interior and the high-voltage
battery being cooled separately of one another, cooling is far more
efficient than with a system using air cooling only, raising the
energy storage medium to a far higher level of performance and
retaining the hybrid functions longer in extreme weather and whenever
the driver prefers a very sporting style of motoring. Ultimately, this
gives BMW ActiveHybrid X6 an outstanding potential in driving
dynamics far superior to other hybrid vehicles in the market.

Intelligent energy management and integral safety concept.

Power electronics developed especially for BMW ActiveHybrid
technology ensures energy management on board the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 both very efficient and flexible in use. The
electronic control system consistently controls the distribution of
energy as a function of ambient conditions, the status of the vehicle,
and the demands made by the driver. The most important incoming and
control factor for the operating strategy chosen
is the charge
status of the high-performance battery saving the electrical energy
  generated through recuperation.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 naturally complies in full with the
integral safety concepts developed for hybrid vehicles by BMW. With
central control functions being integrated both in the power
electronics and the energy battery, the system has the ideal starting
point for fulfilling all kinds of international crash test standards
as well as the demanding internal standards of the BMW Group, in
particular guaranteeing the highest level of operating safety on all
components in the high-voltage on-board network.

Some of the features of this safety concept are the different colours
of cables to avoid any confusion, the presentation of clear safety
warnings and the all-round cover on the entire system using
extra-large insulation panels and newly developed connectors.

The high-voltage battery is housed in a high load-resistant steel
casing and is fitted firmly inside the car, just above the rear axle
at an extremely safe point for the event of a collision. The status of
the storage modules is constantly supervised by integrated safety
electronics, the driver being informed immediately of any malfunction
and, wherever necessary, the entire system being automatically
  discharged and deactivated.

In the event of a collision, the system is switched off automatically
within fractions of a second, the car’s central safety
electronics assessing the severity of an accident and ensuring a safe
  operating mode as a function
of current, individual requirements.

Special hybrid drive Auto Start Stop function.

In city traffic the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 can be run in the
all-electric mode without using the combustion engine. A further
advantage is that the vehicle comes with a new generation of Auto
  Start Stop technology featured here
for the first time. Tailored
specifically to the requirements of a hybrid car, this new Auto Start
Stop function allows a much higher standard of comfort and is
available more often than the conventional system. Automatic
deactivation of the combustion engine at a road junction or at the
traffic lights does not in any way impair the driving experience, just
as the V8 power unit will start again immediately as soon as the
driver presses down the gas pedal.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6 provides the Auto Start Stop function
consistently at all outside temperatures, no matter how cold or how hot.

As long as the engine is switched off, the electric climate
compressor automatically maintains the climate and temperature desired
within the passenger compartment. All other electrically operated
functions are also maintained, with the on-board network being
  consistently supplied
with power from the high-voltage storage
unit. The only way to deactivate the special hybrid Auto Start Stop
function is by choosing the manual gearshift mode on the automatic transmission.

Additional displays informing the driver of the operating status and
  efficiency of the hybrid system.

Operation of the hybrid system and current operating conditions are
presented clearly and understandably in the displays. The most
important information is shown in the central instrument cluster,
clearly separated according to the various operating modes. Further
information and technical explanations, in turn, are shown in the Info
  Display in the centre console.

The drive displays are split up into a conventional rev counter for
the combustion engine and special displays for electric drive in the
lower part of the instrument cluster. Clear visual presentation of
  these functions shows
the driver that the vehicle is ready to
go. The electric drive displays relevant to the driver are the charge
status of the high-voltage storage unit, the recuperation display, the
support provided by the electric motors when accelerating through
their boost function, as well as the driving stages in the
all-electric mode. In the Control Display this information is
supplemented by additional data on current operating conditions and
  the current flow of energy.

Specific set-up of the suspension and the lightweight brakes.

The chassis and suspension of the BMW Active Hybrid X6 is
largely the same as the technology already featured on the BMW X6
xDrive50i. The front axle is a double track arm configuration ensuring
excellent driving dynamics, superior motoring comfort and smooth
directional stability. The Integral IV rear axle has been modified to
reflect the specific characteristics of the hybrid model in terms of
weight distribution and drive power, guaranteeing absolute supremacy
on the road also ensured by self-levelling with air suspension
providing a consistent ride height also when carrying a heavy load.

Lightweight brakes decelerate the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 by means
of swing-calliper brake discs incorporating covers and pistons made of
aluminium. Brake disc diameter is 385 millimetres or 15.2”
up front and 345 millimetres or 13.6” at the rear. The entire
brake system ensures a high standard of comfort in applying the brakes
  and extreme resistance to fading.

Consistent lightweight engineering serves to reduce unsprung masses
and improve the vehicle’s driving comfort and agility.

Very attractive 19-inch light-alloy rims in V-spoke design come as
standard, and 20-inch light-alloy rims in aerodynamically optimised
Streamline design have been developed exclusively for the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 as an option. In each case the tyres are runflat
tyres enabling the driver to continue to the workshop even after a
complete loss of pressure. And it almost goes without saying that the
BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as standard with a Tyre Defect
Indicator incorporating individual tyre pressure control.

The
finishing touches to the BMW X models' success story were added when the BMW X5
was selected third in the "Luxury SUV" category.
The excellent score that BMW X models achieved during the "Off Road" reader
survey is a reflection of the undiminished attraction of BMW X models and
proves the successful reinterpretation of their most important features in the
context of a completely new vehicle segment. The superior driving dynamics of
the winning Sports Activity Coupe BMW X6 are underlined by the model's
coupe-like line arrangement and powerful stance, which made their presence felt
from the first. The new vehicle concept is closely connected with a unique
driving experience. Dynamic Performance Control, introduced with the BMW X6,
carries out the variable distribution of drive power between the front and rear
wheels not only by means of the electronically controlled BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive but also between both rear wheels, thus consistently adjusting
to driving conditions at all times and in all situations. Attributes such as
agility, steering precision, stability and traction are raised to new
dimensions.
Due to its modern drive technology, which includes the integration of extensive
BMW EfficientDynamics technology, the BMW X6 also meets the requirements for
reduced consumption and emission rates. An EU test cycle showed an average fuel
consumption of 8.2 litres for 100 kilometres. With this result, the 173 kW/235
hp BMW X6 xDrive30d has achieved an efficiency that until quite recently would
have been regarded as inconceivable for its category and performance class.
Exactly ten years ago, the German manufacturer of premium cars laid down the
foundations of the BMW X models' success by launching the predecessor of the
current BMW X5 - the first Sports Activity Vehicle. The BMW X5 with its unique
combination of sporting on-road characteristics and confident off-road traction
defined new standards. Its predecessor boosted the attractiveness of the Sports
Activity Vehicle concept not just in terms of dynamic driving but also with the
combination of luxurious appeal with high functionality in the interior and the
exemplary efficiency of its drive technology.
Accolades awarded by the "Off Road" specialist magazine rate high among
manufacturers of all-wheel drive cars. They are based on the assessment of a
readership whose substantial expertise and strong affinity to and fascination
for off-road driving is on a par with that of the magazine's highly competent
and experienced editorial team. Last year, "Off Road" magazine celebrated its
thirtieth anniversary. The magazine's highly qualified readership has been
taking part in the annual selection of the most popular off-road vehicles in
the German market since 1982. The current success in the "Off Road" reader
survey is yet another achievement in a series of awards won by BMW X models in
the recent past.
Sales figures in this segment are another indicator of the sustained success of
BMW X models. Ten years after the launch of the BMW X5, more than 1.3 million
BMW X models have been sold, more than 243,000 of these in 2008 alone. Their
enormous popularity was a major contribution to the fact that BMW successfully
consolidated its position as the most successful global supplier of all-wheel
drive premium cars in 2008. A total of 27% of all newly registered BMW models
are equipped with xDrive and the near future will bring yet another expansion
of the BMW X range. In addition to the BMW X6, BMW X5 and BMW X3 models, the
car manufacturer will soon launch the new BMW X1. This new model will
re-interpret the characteristic attributes of this vehicle segment in the
context of the premium compact category.

Press Contact: Barb Pitblado
Tel: +1-905-428-5005
E-mail: barb.pitblado@bmwgroup.ca

Press Release,X6,Product,BMW

BMW Canada is pleased to announce pricing for the all-new X6 xDrive35i
and X6 xDrive50i Sports Activity Coupés.

Creating an entirely new segment, the new BMW X6 redefines the very notion of a
Coupé, with five doors, luxurious seating for four, a capacious cargo area and
striking new profile. A bold new addition to the BMW lineup, the new BMW X6
Sports Activity Coupé carves out its new niche with a breathtaking muscular
stance and commanding ride height, combined with two state-of-the-art engine
variants, both featuring twin turbos and direct injection.

The X6 xDrive35i comes equipped with BMW's acclaimed 3.0 litre inline
six-cylinder engine with twin turbos and direct fuel injection producing 300
horsepower and 300 ft-lb of torque - available from 1,400 through 5,000 rpm .
The International Engine of the Year -winning powerplant launches the X6
xDrive35i from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds through the standard high-efficiency
6-speed sport automatic transmission. Arriving at BMW retailers on April 26,
the X6 xDrive35i will have a base MSRP of $63,900.

The X6 xDrive50i debuts with an all-new 4.4 litre V8 engine with twin turbo
technology, direct gasoline injection and dual-VANOS infinite camshaft
management. With a maximum output of 400 horsepower and peak torque of 450 ft -
lb, available from 1,800 through 4,500 rpm, the X6 xDrive50i takes its place as
the most powerful X model in the BMW lineup. Seamlessly delivering its output
through the standard high-efficiency 6-speed sport automatic transmission, the
X6 xDrive50i storms from 0-100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds, putting it in a league
of its own. Reaching showrooms later this summer, the X6 xDrive50i will have a
base MSRP of $78,100.

The new X6 Sports Activity Coupé also introduces the latest evolution of BMW's
sophisticated xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive technology - Dynamic
Performance Control. While xDrive controls the distribution of drive power
between the front and rear axles, instantaneously adjusting to driving
conditions, Dynamic Performance Control, featured for the first time on the
BMW X6, ensures variable distribution of drive forces between the two rear
wheels via an innovative rear differential incorporating two planetary gearsets
and two clutch packs that enable the system to multiply torque on an individual
rear wheel. The result is that Dynamic Performance Control, effective on both
acceleration and deceleration, can help steer the vehicle by directing torque
to either of the rear wheels, delivering unprecedented handling dynamics and
steering precision at any speed.

A dynamic, powerful presence.
The silhouette of the new X6 Sports Activity Coupé is nothing less than
imposing from the first glance, with its dynamically low hoodline and
aggressive profile, accentuated by a high waistline and large wheel arches,
housing standard 19-inch light-alloy wheels. The rear profile of the new X6 is
subdivided by horizontal lines giving a wider look and emphasizing its powerful
stance and road-holding capabilities. The greenhouse, with its strikingly low
rear window, in turn, tapers out smoothly towards the rear, with the rear lid
featuring a distinct air flow lip, emphasizing its Coupé orientation.

A premium driving environment and seating for four.
The luxurious cabin of the new BMW X6 offers the occupants of all four seats an
elevated, commanding seating position with standard Nevada leather upholstery
and integrated headrests on all four seats. With standard Glass Sunroof, Heated
Sport Seats, 2-zone Automatic Climate Control, and a HiFi Sound System with 12
speakers, including 2 subwoofers, ergonomic Electronic Shift Lever and a
Multifunction Sport Steering Wheel with gearshift paddles, the new BMW X6
provides its driver and passengers with a dynamic and sumptuous driving
experience.

Additional standard equipment exclusive to the BMW X6 xDrive50i include a BMW
On-board Navigation System and Self-leveling Rear Air suspension.

Wide opening rear doors facilitate easy access to the two individual rear seats
that are dissected by a tasteful and flexible center console with two beverage
holders under sliding covers. Rear headroom of 94 centimetres, unusually
generous for a Coupé, ensures supreme comfort and convenience, even for tall
passengers.

Offering 725 litres of storage space, the luggage compartment behind the rear
seats of the new BMW X6 is far larger than in a conventional coupe, providing
enough space to store four full-size golf bags in the luggage compartment-even
with four people riding in the vehicle. The luggage compartment also boasts a
firm, folding cover that can be stowed beneath the floor for convenient
transportation of bulky objects. The rear-seat backrests may be folded down in
an asymmetric split, expanding loading capacity to a substantial 1687 litres.

A plethora of customization options.
Complementing the extensive range of standard equipment, both BMW X6 models can
be further customized from an unprecedented array of options and option
packages.

Highlights of stand-alone options available on both models include Active
Steering, an Automatic Tailgate with adjustable opening height, Rear DVD
Entertainment System, Manual Side Sunshades, Comfort Seats with Lumbar Support,
SIRIUS Satellite Radio and USB Audio Integration.* Head-Up Display is exclusive
to the X6 xDrive50i.

Technologies and equipment featured in the BMW X6 Option Packages, tailored
specifically for each model, include such items as a Sport Package with 20-inch
Alloy Wheels, a Rear Climate Package with heated rear seats and Automatic
4-zone Climate Control, Rear View Camera, a Premium Sound Package with
Multi-Media Changer and, exclusive to the X6 xDrive50i, a Dynamic Handling
Package which includes Active Steering and Adaptive Drive. *

*For additional details on X6 technical specifications, options and option
pricing, please refer to the new X6 Product Information Guide included as an
attachment with this press release.

BMW X6.
