Richmond Hill, ON.  Boasting greater sporting appeal, visual impact, and versatility than ever, the all-new 2025 BMW X3 retains its place as the dynamic choice for everyday use, weekend adventures, and cross-country journeys. A new design language gives the fourth generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) for the premium midsize segment much enhanced exterior presence and an aura of dynamic grace. High-quality materials, a more generous standard specification, advanced digitalization and the new BMW iDrive Operating System 9 with QuickSelect set the tone for the premium ambience inside the progressively designed cabin. Driving pleasure, safety, and long-distance comfort in the new BMW X3 also all benefit from the precise powertrain and chassis tuning and a wide selection of semi-automated driving and parking systems.

The new BMW X3 heralds major improvements in efficiency and dynamic performance to both the 4-cylinder and high-performance 6-cylinder variants, and these changes coincide with a change to the model designations. The two models will be badged BMW X3 30 xDrive and BMW X3 M50 xDrive, thereby dropping the letter “i” from the model name that previously indicated fuel injection. In future, the letter “i” will only be used in the names of all-electric BMW models.

The all-new 2025 BMW X3’s aura of modernity and enhanced product substance provide the ideal basis for adding another chapter to the BMW X3 success story – one that first began 20 years ago. Since first establishing the SAV segment in the premium midsize class, it has been instrumental in the steady growth in popularity of the BMW X models and, indeed, became the brand’s best-selling model in 2023. The new BMW X3 will be built for the Canadian market at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, South Carolina, using a production process focused on conserving resources and circularity. Its market launch will get underway in the fourth quarter of 2024.

New design language shines the spotlight on distinctive proportions.

A new design language for the exterior gives the fourth generation of the BMW X3 an almost monolithic overall appearance with distinctive BMW X model proportions. Generously proportioned surfaces combine with just a few crisply defined lines to produce a clearly structured exterior design that has been reduced to the essentials. The new BMW X3 is 34 mm longer than its predecessor at 4,755 mm overall, while width has increased by 29 mm to 1,920 mm. Together with the 16 mm drop in vehicle height to 1,660 mm and the wider tracks, this produces a very powerful and sporty look.

The large BMW kidney grille in the upright front end of the new BMW X3 exudes an air of assured presence. A new internal structure for the grille composed of vertically and diagonally arranged bars, adds a fresh touch. The illuminated kidney grille featuring contour lighting – standard on X3 M50 xDrive, optional on X3 30 xDrive – forms a continuous line around each element of the grille. The daytime driving lights, side marker lights, and turn signal indicators in the LED headlights are now all produced by L-shaped, overlapping light sources. Full LED Headlights with cornering light functions, plus blue design detailing, are optionally available, as are Shadowline Lights.

Bold side skirts and a roofline extending deep into the rear end are the distinguishing features of the new model’s sporty silhouette. The prominently flared wheel arches create the impression of considerable width at the rear. The flush-mounted rear window is bordered by a long roof spoiler and the adjoining side air deflectors. X3 30 xDrive models are fitted with exhaust tailpipes integrated out of sight in the rear apron. The fresh interpretation of the characteristic T-shaped graphic and a satin-finished horizontal bar with integral turn signal indicators help to give the rear lights a very modern appearance.

There is a choice of one solid, seven metallic and two frozen paint colours available for the new X3 M50 xDrive, and one solid, nine metallic and two frozen shades for the new BMW X3 30 xDrive. This includes the new Dune Grey metallic finish, available on both variants. And for the next level in personalization, models produced at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg will also be available with over fifteen BMW Individual paint finishes.

The new BMW X3 30 xDrive is equipped as standard with 19-inch alloy wheels with a selection of 20-inch and 21-inch packages available as options. The optional M Sport Package adds an exceptionally dynamic look and feel on the road with features such as 20-inch M alloy wheels, M Sport brakes and suspension, variable sport steering, and design cues engineered to optimize airflow and aerodynamic balance. The optional M Sport Pro Package builds on the M Sport content by adding the illuminated kidney grille (standard on X3 M50 xDrive), M Sport brakes with a choice of red or blue painted brake calipers (blue included in M Sport Package on X3 30 xDrive and standard on X3 M50 xDrive), Shadowline Lights, Full LED Headlights with cornering light function, and Black Exterior Contents.

Sporty premium ambience and generous amounts of space.

The cabin of the new BMW X3 blends robust SAV functionality with ample spaciousness and a premium ambience full of individual style. The BMW Curved Display, BMW Interaction Bar, steering wheels with a flat-bottomed rim, and the new gear selector toggle are the defining elements of the cockpit’s modern take on hallmark BMW driver-focused design. Other model-specific highlights include light elements in a contrasting colour in the centre console and door trims. This new design feature is located towards the front of the driver’s and front passenger doors, where it forms a border around function buttons, ventilation controllers, air vents and the robust door handles typically found on BMW X models.

The interior’s ambience goes hand in hand with generous amounts of space and modern versatility. Luggage space can be increased from 570 litres to a maximum of 1,700 litres  by folding the rear seats forward. A trailer hitch is optional and allows a trailer load of up to 2,200 kg depending on the model variant.

The new BMW X3 is fitted as standard with newly designed electrically adjustable and heated sport seats upholstered in the customer’s choice of three colours of Perforated and Quilted Veganza. Two colours of Merino Leather upholsteries are available as options on both models, while an M Veganza/Alcantara combination in Black with Blue contrast stitching is available on the X3 M50 xDrive. Available for the first time on any BMW model is an optional woven fabric  covering the dashboard and upper doors made from recycled polyester with a premium knitted texture.

The foundations for an emotionally intoxicating driving experience in the BMW tradition were laid by the consistent upgrades made to the inline 6-cylinder engine from BMW’s latest modular generation. The 3.0-litre engine shines with extremely rapid power delivery, a strong appetite for revs, and remarkably low fuel consumption and emissions relative to its power.

The engine in the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive (designated B58B30M2) is one of the first to benefit from the new Efficient Dynamics Next technology package. Among the highlights are the Miller combustion cycle, redesigned intake ports and combustion chamber geometry, and changes to the injection system, ignition system, exhaust gas routing, and camshaft timing. The package contains developments including switchable exhaust-side rocker arms and eVANOS electrically controlled camshaft adjustment. Among the engine’s M-specific highlights are a new, extremely robust crankshaft drive, an optimized system of oil supply for the pistons with cooling channels, and new main bearing shells and caps. Its M TwinPower Turbo technology has been upgraded by increasing the performance of the turbocharging system and indirect charge air cooling at the same time as introducing dual injection for mixture preparation as a function of load point.

The engine and the 48V hybrid system combine to achieve a total system output of 393 hp between 5,200 and 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 428 lb-ft between 1,900 and 4,800 rpm. The 48V mild hybrid technology in the form of a crankshaft-mounted starter generator helps to deliver instantaneous response to every movement of the accelerator and to optimize efficiency. The electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission can both supplement the output of the combustion engine and ease the load on it, as required by the driving situation at hand. A model-specific, extremely rigid engine mounting makes an additional contribution to the engine’s direct response.

The engine’s spirited power development is accompanied by the emotionally engaging note from a quad tailpipe exhaust system that also turns heads stylistically: the twin tailpipes integrated into the left and right of the rear apron are an unmistakable, M-specific nod to the position of the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive at the top of the X3 model range’s performance range.

This highly potent powertrain combines with model-specific chassis technology to deliver a compelling blend of agility, dynamic control, and handling precision. M Sport brakes, 20-inch Style 1036M alloy wheels, variable sport steering, and an M Sport differential at the rear axle all come as standard, while Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers can be optionally equipped. Full contour lighting of the kidney and M-specific design features such as the M  grille with horizontal bars and the quartet of exhaust tailpipes all serve to underline the status of the BMW M model as the most powerful version of the new BMW X3.

The 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder unit (designated B48B20O2) found under the hood of the BMW X3 30 xDrive boasts instantaneous power delivery, a healthy appetite for revs, and exemplary efficiency. Beyond the adoption of 48V mild hybrid technology, this is mostly the result of extensive upgrades to the core engine. The array of innovations includes the Miller cycle (which shortens the opening time of the intake valves), redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and an ignition system featuring an active coil with integrated electronics. Mixture preparation is optimized using a new dual injection system. In addition to the existing high-pressure injection system, some of the fuel is now injected into the combustion chambers via a low-pressure system. At the same time, the performance of the turbocharging system and intercooler has also been improved. Switchable rocker arms on the exhaust side of the VALVETRONIC variable valve timing form the basis for enabling purely electric driving at extremely low speeds. 

The new power unit generates maximum output of 255 hp between 4,700 and 6,500 rpm and peak torque of 295 lb-ft at 1,600 and 4,500 rpm. This enables the new BMW X3 30 xDrive to accelerate to 100 km/h from rest in 6.3 seconds.

Agility and ride comfort up their game.

Both BMW X3 models boast noticeable advancements in agility, cornering stability, and long-distance comfort over the outgoing model. A body-in-white with lower weight but increased rigidity and the wider rear track both play roles here, as do the high-quality chassis components and control systems tuned for each model. Modifications to the kinematic and elastokinematic properties of the double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle have increased precision when turning into corners, while the 19 percent increase in the caster offset of the steering axle benefits straight-line stability. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation and the integrated braking system likewise form part of the standard package of chassis technology.

X3 M50 xDrive customers can choose the optional Adaptive M suspension which sharpens agility and improves ride comfort, while those equipping M Sport Package on their X3 30 xDrive can opt for standard suspension for a less sporty ride.

Parking Assistant as standard. Optional Parking Assistant Professional with Manoeuvre Assistant.

The new BMW X3 offers a broad range of standard and optional systems for semi-automated driving and parking. It is equipped as standard with Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Keeping Assistant and Speed Limit Info, along with the Driving Assistant including Active Blind Spot Detection and manual Speed Limit Assistant. The Parking Assistant, now standard, incorporates features such as the Backup Assistant and a Rear View Camera.

Specifying the optional Parking Assistant Professional maximises the X3’s automated parking abilities. Instead of just using other vehicles as a guide for determining the boundaries of a parking space, the system is now also able to take into account road markings and the curb. Entering and exiting tight spaces can be controlled from outside the car by smartphone using the My BMW App.

The BMW Manoeuvre Assistant also included in Parking Assistant Professional makes it possible to store far more complex parking and general manoeuvres and execute them automatically using GPS data and the trajectory data from steering movements. It can record up to ten manoeuvres with a total length of up to 600 metres. At the starting point of the stored route – and after the driver has given their confirmation – the BMW Manoeuvre Assistant takes over the full parking manoeuvre, including all necessary changes in direction. The driver can control the process from either inside the car or outside (by smartphone) and focus on monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings. It is also possible to quickly switch between the two modes, meaning that once a parking or general manoeuvre has commenced, it can be halted at any time and then resumed from inside the car using its control/operation system or from outside using a smartphone. If the Parking Assistant Professional is specified, the Backup Assistant can also take over control of the steering on a route of up to 200 metres along which the vehicle has been previously driven forwards.

Driving Assistant Professional provides an extended driver assistance experience.

In X3s specified with the optional Driving Assistant Professional, the Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Protection and Distance Control can be used when travelling at highway speeds. At lower speeds up to 60 km/h, the Traffic Jam Assistant can provide attentive, unlimited hands-free driving to ease the strain of especially dense traffic situations on limited access highways.

Intuitive operation and new digital services with BMW Operating System 9.

The new BMW X3 provides further evidence of the relentless progress being made in the field of digitalization with the introduction of BMW Operating System 9. This technology lays the foundations for the latest version of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect. The new edition enables intuitive, comfortable and ergonomically optimized control of numerous vehicle functions and use of innovative digital services by means of the control display’s touchscreen, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, and the BMW iDrive Controller on the centre console. The latest improvements for interaction using touch and voice control allows the driver-focused cockpit to further reduce the number of buttons and switches. The optional BMW Head-Up Display adds further scope to the multimodal dialogue between the driver and car.

BMW Operating System 9 was developed in-house by the BMW Group and is based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack for the first time. It provides the basis for a broader offering of digital content for information and entertainment, shorter function update cycles and improved accessibility to a host of specific online services via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. BMW Operating System 9 therefore paves the way for a customizable selection of additional digital services that are made available to customers either by means of BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades or via an ever-growing variety of third-party apps as part of the optional BMW Digital Premium offering.

BMW Digital Premium includes features such as apps for video streaming, music from platforms like Spotify, podcasts, news, and in-car gaming. It also adds functions to the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps such as 3D maps, Satellite View users can select from the BMW Maps menu and Traffic Camera Information displayed in the instrument cluster or, if equipped, BMW Head-Up Display. BMW Digital Premium also expands the abilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and broadens the scope of driving experience customization possibilities courtesy of additional My Modes. Plus, it covers the data usage required for the digital services.

Remote Software Upgrades, BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades and BMW Digital Premium.

The BMW Group has the world’s largest fully over-the-air upgradeable vehicle fleet, with more than 7.5 million vehicles. The Remote Software Upgrades function keeps the new BMW X3 right up to date with the latest software at all times. Upgrades may include free quality improvements, updates, or even additional features (availability depends on country, vehicle model, equipment and vehicle status).

With BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, customers can also download additional digital products and services for their car after they have bought it. For the majority of BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, customers can activate a free-of-charge trial. The BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades can be downloaded from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store on the web, from the My BMW App or directly in the car.

The range of products and services available for the new BMW X3 from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store – which can be accessed via the in-car app in the car’s All Apps menu – includes Driving Assistant Plus and Parking Assistant Professional. If Driving Assistant Plus and/or Parking Assistant Professional are not selected from factory, customers still have the ability to add the functionality (depending on equipment) to their vehicle as ConnectedDrive Upgrades. Driving Assistant Plus includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go which adjusts the speed of the vehicle automatically (to a standstill if necessary) to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle ahead as well as Steering Assistant which supports the driver in keeping the vehicle in the centre of the lane. Parking Assistant Professional includes remote parking operation via the My BMW App, Manoeuvre Assistant which allows your vehicle to learn up to 10 parking routes, and an informative display of parking spaces that can be overlaid in the parking view. These features make parking in tighter parking spaces easier by reducing manual steering manoeuvres.

The new BMW Digital Premium package of wide-reaching functionality extensions can also be downloaded easily from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

BMW Digital Premium provides outstanding entertainment when it comes to music, video streaming, and gaming.

BMW Digital Premium gives customers access to in-car gaming that is unique in the automotive sector. In cooperation with the game platform AirConsole*, BMW offers a wide selection of casual games that can be played while the vehicle is stationary, for example when waiting for someone or something. The continuously growing portfolio of playable titles includes racing, sports and quiz games.

The driver and passengers can spend any downtime they have in the car when it’s stationary by gaming in single-player or in multi-player mode. They only need their smartphone, which will serve as a controller, and the gaming experience on the BMW Curved Display is ready to go. Other games from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store available via BMW Digital Premium can be played on the control display using touch control.

BMW Digital Premium also brings an array of audio streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer and Amazon Music to the new BMW X3. Customers can use their account with their preferred streaming provider directly from the car. BMW Digital Premium covers the required data usage for video and music streaming via the media apps.

Extended functions for the navigation system BMW Maps.

The cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps included as standard in the new BMW X3 offers further product improvements and extensions. As well as offering a simplified method of destination entry, BMW Maps enables fast route calculation, carried out dynamically and based on precise real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals. The map data is accessed online and is therefore as up-to-date as possible at all times.

The optional Digital Cockpit Professional includes both the BMW Head-Up Display and the Augmented View function. This adds an event-related live video stream from the driver’s view to the navigation map on the control display or instrument cluster. For example, at a confusing junction an animated direction arrow integrated into the video image helps the driver to take the correct turn-off according to the route planning.

Additional My Modes and further scope for individualisation with BMW Digital Premium.

Customers can tailor the driving experience in the new BMW X3 to their personal preferences via the three My Modes Personal, Sport and Efficient. Depending on the My Mode selected, the vehicle functions, content on the BMW Curved Display and interior lighting are adapted to work together harmoniously. The My Modes provide a neatly coordinated overall experience on board. BMW Digital Premium offers the customer a wider variety of My Modes, with the addition of Expressive Mode, Relax Mode, Digital Art Mode, and the new Silent Mode.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant adds numerous new skills to those offered by the predecessor to the new BMW X3. To further enhance the dialogue between human and car, interactive graphics are shown on the control display that indicate the Assistant is listening attentively to what is being said and provide a suitable response to selected spoken commands.

For example, the Assistant acknowledges the request to look for a gas station nearby by showing the image of a fuel pump. If BMW Digital Premium is specified, the customer can choose alternative graphics for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. In addition, direct text overlays tell the customer while they are still formulating their command what the Assistant has just understood and processed.

Munich. With a brace of victories in the “Best Cars” competition, BMW has backed up its successful end to 2023 with a similarly fruitful beginning to 2024. The BMW 2 Series Coupé wrapped up class victory in the compact segment for the third time in succession, while the BMW X1 led the way in the “compact SUV” category. The “Best Cars” award – voted on by readers of German motoring magazine “auto, motor und sport” and in its 48th edition this year – is one of the most prestigious in the European automotive industry. Almost 100,000 respondents took part in the survey, selecting one overall winner and one “imported car” champion from a field of 455 models across 13 vehicle categories.

The start of 2024 was also marked by class victory for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan in the “Large Car” category of the “Women's Worldwide Car of the Year” award. 75 female automotive journalists from 52 countries picked out their favourites from a total of 62 vehicles in five categories. Intended to showcase the influence of women in the automotive industry and presented for the 14th time this year, this prize takes into account factors such as safety, quality, price, design, ride comfort, everyday usability and environmental impact. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan won over the jury members with its electrified drive system line-up (including the fully electric BMW i5), as well as its spaciousness, advanced technology and now fully vegan interior.

This successful beginning to the year saw BMW building on its run of success in a large number of awards in 2023. Models from the premium brand’s current range claimed numerous prizes in both its home market of Germany and its most important sales regions internationally. The winners stretched across all the relevant categories, with compact models, luxury vehicles and high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH all making waves. As well as vehicles powered by combustion engines, the readers and juries also recognised a strikingly high number of representatives from BMW’s constantly expanding electric mobility range.

Newcomer to the ranks of high-performance models and a fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle both win a “Golden Steering Wheel”.

The “Golden Steering Wheel” presented by German publications “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag” is one of the most prestigious distinctions in the European car industry. BMW took two of these coveted trophies back to Munich in 2023. The BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 – 10.1 l/100 km [27.2 – 28.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 229 g/km in the WLTP cycle) ranked first in the “sports cars” category and the fully electric BMW iX1 topped the “compact class”.

Both models added a string of other international awards to their collections over the course of 2023. For example, the first ever BMW M3 Touring – which combines the dynamic prowess of a high-performance car with impressive levels of practicality – was elected sports car of the year in the category for vehicles costing up to 120,000 euros by readers of “Auto Bild Sportscars” magazine. And acclaimed British TV programme “Top Gear” honoured the BMW M GmbH newcomer with the title “All The Car You'll Ever Need” in its “Car of the Year” awards.

The BMW iX1 collected a trio of awards in China, including “All-Electric Premium SUV of the Year”. It also won the French “Automobile Award 2023” in the “Green Tech” category and the “autonis Award” bestowed by readers of “auto, motor und sport” to the year’s most attractive new design.

Fully electric BMW i5 enjoys immediate success around the world.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW i5 also claimed an “autonis” prize. Now also available with a fully electric drive system for the first time, the new edition of the world’s most successful business sedan was also named “Car of the Year” by Portuguese magazine “Frontline”. The BMW i5 was also presented with equivalent awards in Norway and Denmark, both particularly important markets for electric vehicles. Norwegian daily “Dagbladet” teamed up with online portals “DinSide” and “Elbi24” to celebrate the BMW i5. While in Denmark, the i5 fought off competition from six other models to gain the most votes for “Car of the Year” in a final round made up exclusively of fully electric models. The jury of 20 Danish motoring journalists chose the BMW i5 as their winner by a large margin.

Chinese publication “Auto World” crowned the BMW i5 as “Most Anticipated Premium Executive Sedan of the Year”, and the fully electric business sedan also collected three awards in Great Britain: “The Car Expert” put the BMW i5 in top spot in its “Best Large Car Award”, it was named “Premium Car of the Year” in the “2024 Electrifying.com Awards” and the “Comfortable Cruiser” topped its class in Carwow’s “Car of the Year Awards 2024”.

The awards underscore the ability of the new BMW i5 Sedan to win people over with numerous different qualities: from character-rich design, a unique balance between sportiness and comfort, innovative equipment features and progressive digital services to a drive system whose power is matched by its capability over long distances. And it also uses latest-generation BMW eDrive technology to transfer the brand’s signature dynamic ability to the road with zero local emissions. In addition, adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help to give the BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined: 18.9 – 15.9 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) a range of 498 – 582 kilometres (309 – 362 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW’s electric mobility offensive is recognised with awards.

The BMW brand’s fully electric model line-up as a whole enjoyed a successful year worldwide in 2023. As well as the BMW iX1 and BMW i5, this was particularly true of the BMW i7 and BMW i4. In Great Britain alone, these two models were both among the winners in seven awards. Both won the “Auto Express New Car Award” in their respective vehicle classes. The BMW i4 also claimed the “Pocket-lint Award” and “Business Car Award”, and the BMW i7 celebrated success in both the “What Car? Electric Car Awards” and the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”. The fully electric luxury sedan racked up five prizes in China, too, including the “Car of the Year” distinction from leading online magazine “sohu.com”.

There was also much to celebrate in France and the USA, where the BMW i7 was given the “Best Overall and Best Value” rating from “Money” magazine and praised by “wards auto” magazine for its standout luxury ambience and digital user experience with BMW Theatre Screen in the rear compartment. Renowned US magazine “car and driver” named both the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW i4 eDrive40 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 19.1 – 16.1 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) among the “Best 10” of 2023.

Top marks and distinctions for the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series ranges, the BMW M2 and the BMW X3.

BMW set the seal on a successful year in Germany with a two-pronged triumph. The BMW 3 Series and BMW X3 closed out 2023 with class victory in the coveted “Auto Trophy”. The BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring, for example, took clear victories in the hotly contested midsize segment of the readers’ survey conducted by German title “Auto Zeitung”, racking up 19.0 per cent of the vote. This was the seventh class win in a row for the 3 Series. Meanwhile, the rugged aura, interior spaciousness and commitment to electrification of the BMW X3 helped it account for 15.3 per cent of the votes cast and therefore the highest points total in the high-volume vehicle segment of “SUVs costing 30,000 – 60,000 euros”.

The BMW 3 Series was a particularly prolific award-winner in Great Britain. In the “Business Car Awards”, the 3 Series won the “Best Premium Car” prize, and it also gained entry to the “Hall of Fame” of “Fleet News” magazine as the “Most Reliable Company Car”. The BMW 3 Series won twice in the “What Car? Used Car Awards”, topping both the “Used Executive Car” category and overall “Used Car of the Year”. And then there was the “Best Used Hybrid Executive Car” distinction for the BMW 330e Sedan (fuel consumption, combined: 1.9 – 1.4 l/100 km [148.7 – 201.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined 20.1 – 18.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 43 – 32 g/km in the WLTP cycle). The plug-in hybrid model also tasted success in the USA, where “Money” magazine described it as “Best for Handling”.

Adding to the wave of success enjoyed by the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 4 Series – with its standout sporting appeal – also enriched the brand’s glittering international reputation in the premium midsize segment. The best example of this came in the BMW 4 Series Coupé and BMW 4 Series Convertible’s showing in the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards” in Great Britain. The closed-roof two-door won the “Coupe of the Year” for the third year in succession in 2023. And this year its open-top sister model also won the “Convertible of the Year” award.

Two other British awards were claimed by the BMW M2. It was voted “Best Performance Car” in “The Car Expert Awards”, and the compact high-performance sports car also took the title of “Performance Car of the Year” in the “Auto Express New Car Awards”.

Munich. For the third time in a row, BMW M GmbH ended the financial year as the global market leader in the performance and high-performance car segment. Indeed, the company posted record sales once again in 2021. A total of 163,542 BMW M cars were delivered to customers worldwide last year, a 13 percent increase on 2020.

This growth was spread equally between the High-Performance sports cars and Performance cars made by BMW M GmbH, with both product categories raising their sales figures to a new level. “This success is the perfect start to our anniversary year,” says Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “M is in a stronger position than ever as it celebrates its 50th birthday.”

New BMW M3 and new BMW M4 enjoy immediate success.

The biggest drivers of growth among the High-Performance sports cars were the new BMW M3 and BMW M4 models introduced in spring 2021. Fuelled by a vehicle concept focused squarely on emotionally charged dynamism and unprecedented diversity in the model range, the new BMW M3 Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 – 10.0 l/100 km [27.7 – 28.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 231 – 227 g/km as per WLTP), new BMW M4 Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 10.1 – 9.9 l/100 km [28.0 – 28.5 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 230 – 226 g/km as per WLTP) and new BMW M4 Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 233 – 231 g/km as per WLTP) got off to an extremely successful start. The latest model generation is the first to offer customers two output levels topping out at 375 kW/510 hp, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox or the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

“The response to the new generation of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 has been simply overwhelming,” reports Timo Resch, Vice President Customer, Brand and Sales at BMW M GmbH. “We can therefore expect demand for these iconic sports cars to continue on an upward curve in 2022.”

Also making a powerful contribution to the latest rise in High-Performance model sales at BMW M GmbH were the BMW X5 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.6 – 13.3 l/100 km [20.8 – 21,2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 308 – 303 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW X6 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.4 – 13.1 l/100 km [21.1 – 21.6 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 305 – 299 g/km as per WLTP). Following the successful market launch of the latest model generation the previous year, the charismatic High-Performance sports cars in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé segment – both powered by a 460 kW/625 hp V8 engine – increased their sales figures once again in 2021.

Alluring and in demand: the BMW M models in the BMW 4 Series range.

The dynamic excellence, agility and precision for which M is renowned also enabled the brand’s Performance models to delight and excite a wide range of customers over the past year. Credit for the latest boost to sales goes above all to the M models based on the new BMW 4 Series. Particularly popular were the variants of the new BMW 4 Series Coupé, whose line-up consists of the BMW M440i Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.1 – 7.4 l/100 km [34.8 – 38.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 184 – 167 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW M440i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.2 – 7.5 l/100 km [34.5 – 37.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 186 – 170 g/km as per WLTP) powered by a 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, and the BMW M440d xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 6.3 – 5.7 l/100 km [44.8 – 49.6 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 165 – 150 g/km as per WLTP), whose six-cylinder in-line diesel unit produces 250 kW/340 hp.

The latest BMW X models within the ranks of M’s Performance cars also proved extremely desirable. Indeed, the BMW X3 M40i powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine with 265 kW/360 hp (fuel consumption combined: 9.5 – 8.8 l/100 km [29.7 – 32.1 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 216 – 199 g/km as per WLTP) and the BMW X7 M50i (fuel consumption combined: 12.8 – 12.3 l/100 km [22.1 – 23.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 292 – 280 g/km as per WLTP) with its 390 kW/530 hp V8 unit both posted an increase in new registrations.

Looking ahead to an anniversary year brimming with highlights.

BMW M GmbH will continue its product offensive in this anniversary year with the addition of new High-Performance and Performance models. Highlights include the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.8 – 8.1 l/100 km [32.1 – 34.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 200 – 185 g/km as per WLTP) and the arrival later in the year of the first BMW M3 Touring and an exclusive special-edition model based on the new BMW M4 Coupé.

In addition, the BMW Group subsidiary – which was founded as BMW Motorsport GmbH in May 1972 and enjoys the status of an independent manufacturer – will also drive the transformation to electric mobility. Following in the tyre tracks of the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/100 km as per WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km) in the first half of 2022 will be the likewise fully electric BMW iX M60 (projected electric power consumption combined: 24.7 – 21.7 kWh/100 km as per WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km).

The most powerful BMW M model ever made points the way to the future of the brand.

The anniversary year will be crowned by the start of production of the BMW XM. The most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series production is also the brand’s first High-Performance model to employ a plug-in hybrid drive system. Its newly developed M Hybrid technology brings together a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor to develop maximum output of 550 kW/750 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft). The design of the BMW XM majors on presence and extrovert appeal and in so doing sends out a clear statement in the luxury segment.

“Our first standalone model since the legendary BMW M1 represents a complete re-imagining of the high-performance car segment,” says van Meel. “The BMW XM blends expressive design and progressive interior luxury with an incomparable driving experience that serves up both sublime performance and the ability to glide along in near silence in all-electric mode. Munich. The unique combination of intelligent all-wheel drive BMW xDrive and cutting-edge BMW eDrive technology makes for sustainable driving pleasure in another BMW model. The new BMW X3 xDrive30e is already the third Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in the brand's current model range to feature a plug-in hybrid drive and power transmission to all four wheels, offering exciting versatility and a purely electric driving experience as well as outstandingly low fuel consumption and emissions. Together, the 4-cylinder combustion engine and the electric motor of the plug-in hybrid model generate a maximum system output of 215 kW/292 hp. The unique combination of the intelligent 4-wheel drive system BMW xDrive and state-of-the-art BMW eDrive technology reduces average fuel consumption to levels between 2.4 and 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres*. The relevant CO₂ emissions amount to 54 to 49 grams per kilometre*. The combined power consumption of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is between 17.2 and 16.4 kWh per 100 kilometres*. Its lithium-ion high-voltage battery equipped with the very latest battery cell technology enables purely electric mobility with a range of 51 to 55 kilometres*.

The new BMW X3 xDrive30e will be produced from December 2019 onwards at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, USA – alongside the conventionally powered model variants of the BMW X3. The worldwide market launch is due to start in spring 2020. In this way, the BMW Group is consistently pursuing not only the electrification of its drive portfolio but also a product strategy geared towards the diverse needs of its customers. The globally popular SAV model in the premium mid-range segment is the first model of the brand to be offered with both a conventional combustion engine and a plug-in hybrid system – with a purely electrically powered model variant due to be added during the course 2020.

Sports Activity Vehicle with agile handling, superior off-road performance and outstanding efficiency.

The new BMW X3 xDrive30e combines the typical qualities of a Sports Activity Vehicle with particularly efficient drive technology. The plug-in hybrid model is likewise characterised by agile handling and sporty driving characteristics, robust versatility, a versatile interior, premium quality and advanced connectivity. Its BMW xDrive system permanently distributes the drive torque between the front and rear wheels as required – even when driving purely on electric power – so as to ensure sporty driving characteristics on the road and superior off-road performance over unsurfaced terrain. The drive power is generated by a 2.0-litre, 135 kW/184 hp 4-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission with an output of 80 kW/109 hp. Together the two drive units mobilise a system output of 215 kW/292 hp. The maximum system torque of the plug-in hybrid drive is 420 Nm. This allows the new BMW X3 xDrive30e to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. Its top speed is 210 km/h.

Depending on the operating mode and the situation on the road, the electric motor of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e can be used either for purely electric mobility or to support the combustion engine. In MAX eDrive mode, which can be activated via the eDrive button on the centre console, the new BMW X3 xDrive30e achieves a top speed of 135 km/h with a locally emissions-free and virtually silent drive unit. In the standard Auto eDrive setting, purely electric driving is possible at speeds of up to 110 km/h. The combustion engine only switches on at higher speeds or when there are particularly high load requirements. When both drive units are active, the efficiency of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is optimised, as is its sprint capacity. When accelerating, the spontaneous power development of the electric motor is clearly noticeable, while at constant speeds its electric assist reduces fuel consumption and emissions. The support of the electric motor ensures that the combustion engine can run within an efficiency-optimised load range as often as possible. The likewise available BATTERY CONTROL setting serves to keep the charge state of the high-voltage battery at a level determined by the driver. In this way, the power supply can be specifically reserved and used for local emissions-free driving on urban stretches of road during a lengthier trip.

High-voltage battery based on the very latest battery cell technology for maximum efficiency; large, variable luggage compartment.

The lithium-ion battery of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is located in a space-saving position underneath the rear seat, while the fuel tank is positioned above the rear axle. This means that the transport capacity of the plug-in hybrid model is only slightly restricted. At 450 litres, the luggage compartment volume of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is on a par with those models which have a conventional engine. By folding down the rear seat with 40 : 20: 40 split, the storage space can be extended to up to 1 500 litres. Thanks to cutting-edge battery cell technology and a gross energy content of 12.0 kWh, the high-voltage battery contributes both to the outstanding efficiency and the excellent electrical range of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e. As a result, the plug-in hybrid model can be used for a great deal of day-to-day travel without locally produced emissions – even beyond the city.

The high-voltage battery can be charged at conventional household sockets using the standard-equipment charging cable. In this way, the battery can be fully charged in less than six hours. At a BMW i Wallbox, the same charging process can be completed in around three and a half hours. The charging socket is located under a separate flap on the front left side wall of the car. The electrical energy stored in the high-voltage battery is also used to supply the 12-volt vehicle electrical system.

Electric licence plate and tax benefit thanks to the considerable electrical range.

Thanks to its high electrical range the new BMW X3 xDrive30e fulfils the criteria laid down in the German Electric Mobility Act – depending on fittings – for classification as an e-vehicle, complete with special rights on public roads. It is also subject to reduced company car taxation in Germany. Only half the gross list price is used as a basis when calculating the monetary benefit from private use of the company car.

As an alternative to the basic version, the new BMW X3 xDrive 30e also comes in the model variants Advantage, xLine, Luxury and M Sport. Its standard equipment includes acoustic pedestrian protection. When driving electrically at low speeds, an unmistakeable sound designed specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other road users to the approaching car without impairing the acoustic comfort of the vehicle occupants. In addition, the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is equipped with an auxiliary air conditioning system as standard. It can also be controlled remotely from a smartphone using the BMW Connected App: the driver can therefore get into a warm vehicle in winter and a pleasantly cool vehicle in summer. New digital services help make it more attractive and convenient to charge the high-voltage battery when out and about. The digital services support the driver in searching for and selecting public charging stations, enable the charging process to be controlled via remote functions and transmit information relating to charge status, electrical and combined range and individual energy consumption to the driver’s smartphone or other personal devices.

In addition, almost the entire range of optional equipment available for the conventionally powered versions of the BMW X3 is also available for the plug-in hybrid model – thereby increasing driving pleasure, comfort and individual style. This range includes an Adaptive Suspension, a Variable Sports Steering and a M Sport Brake System, the BMW Head-Up Display, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Driving Assistant Plus with steering and lane guidance assistant and also Parking Assistant Plus. Another feature included in this range of extras is a tow hitch that can be electrically swivelled out and in. The maximum towing capacity of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is 2,000 kilograms.

New BMW X3 xDrive30e has a smaller overall CO₂ footprint.

The “real” environmental impact of plug-in hybrid vehicles has been questioned on occasion, especially in markets where the proportion of green energy used by the public energy grid remains small. The BMW Group conducted a full-cycle CO₂ certification for the new BMW X3 xDrive30e – from raw material procurement, the supply chain, production and the use phase, all the way to recycling.

This revealed the CO₂ footprint of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e to be 26 per cent smaller than that of the new BMW X3 xDrive30i when running on average European power in the use phase. When charging the car with green energy, its CO₂ footprint is reduced by as much as 54 per cent.

BMW plug-in hybrid models offer an array of benefits in everyday use.

BMW’s plug-in hybrid drive systems already offer users a host of additional benefits over traditional solutions:

• Money-saving: Electric driving in urban areas is cheaper than using petrol or diesel if the plug-in hybrid vehicle is charged at home or at the workplace at low cost.
• Interior always at the right temperature, even before you get in: auxiliary heating and auxiliary air conditioning are fitted as standard.
• Braking is winning: The battery is charged under braking. In conventional vehicles, braking generates only heat and brake dust.
• The best of both worlds: Plug-in hybrids provide electric driving pleasure in urban areas and classical BMW driving pleasure over longer distances.

• Smoothing the way into the future: Because a plug-in hybrid can run emission-free, it is eligible to enter many low-emission zones, enjoys extra parking privileges and saves on toll charges.
• Better quality of life in cities: By driving on electric power, users can actively contribute to reducing emissions and traffic noise in cities.

Spartanburg/ Munich. BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina has doubled its capacity for production of high-voltage batteries. The plant’s own battery facility now produces the new fourth-generation batteries. These are intended for the plug-in hybrid models of the new BMW X5 and the future BMW X3, also produced in Spartanburg.

“We have invested around ten million US dollars in a new battery assembly line and expanded the area to more than 8,000 square metres. This means we could double the number of batteries produced if needed to meet market demand,” explains Michael Nikolaides, Senior Vice President Engines and Electrified Drivetrains, BMW Group.

The new assembly line will be able to produce different types of fourth-generation batteries to serve the growing range of electrified vehicles locally. These batteries are based on a new technology concept that further enhances their performance.

More than 120 people will be employed in battery production at Plant Spartanburg by the end of the year, having completed a comprehensive training programme to acquire the technological know-how needed for battery production.

“We have produced batteries on site at Plant Spartanburg since 2015 – making the BMW Group a pioneer for electromobility in the US,” says Knudt Flor, President and CEO, BMW Manufacturing, Co., LLC. In the past four years, the plant’s battery assembly team has produced a total of more than 45,000 batteries.

Further investment in production of BMW X5 and BMW X3 plug-in hybrids

Between 2015 and 2018, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg built the first series produced plug-in hybrid vehicle, the BMW X5 xDrive40e (combined fuel consumption: 3,3 l/100km; combined power consumption: 15,3 kWh/100km ; combined CO2-emission: 77 g/km), for the core BMW brand. The start of production for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e (combined fuel consumption: 2,0-1,7 l/100km*; combined power consumption: 23,5-20,3 kWh/100km*; combined CO2-emission: 47-39 g/km*) will be in August 2019; production of the BMW X3 xDrive30e (combined fuel consumption: from 2,4 l/100 km*; combined power consumption: from 22,7 kWh/100 km*; combined CO2-emission: from 56 g/km*; provisional figures) will get underway in December.

“The BMW X5 and BMW X3 are currently among the top-selling BMW models in the US. We expect their plug-in hybrid variants to be just as popular with customers,” adds Flor.

Since the start of the year, the BMW Group has invested a further ten million US dollars in production of plug-in hybrid models. An additional 225 vehicle assembly workers received training in the production of electrified vehicles, adding to the Plant’s already skilled staff.

International production network for batteries

The BMW Group currently has three battery facilities: at the Competence Centre for E-drive Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Germany, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US and at Plant Powertrain of its joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA). The BMW Group also produces batteries for local car production in cooperation with a partner in Thailand. The BMW Group’s battery research and pilot plant are located in Munich.

Munich. The new BMW X3 will be released in November, shortly after its world premiere at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt. An extensive global campaign entitled “On a Mission” will accompany the launch of this successful model. Campaign highlights include a rousing TV spot with extreme athletes and a 360° virtual reality test drive on Mars, with continuation of the campaign in digital channels.

The “On a Mission” campaign presents the BMW X3 as free-spirited and independent, always ready to push the boundaries. The theme of venturing off the beaten track and discovering new horizons is underlined by the off-road character of the SAV and its ground-breaking innovations. A key idea is the passion that transforms a job or a hobby into a mission. This appeal to the emotions is a common thread throughout the campaign: BMW celebrates people who pursue their dreams with relentless passion – people who are on a mission.

From idea to media: Big data supports campaign development.

Campaign development started out with a widescale interdisciplinary big data analysis that gathered and evaluated information about different BMW X3 buyer groups. This allowed BMW to consider the interests and media use of its future customers already in the creative phase of the campaign. As a result, the BMW X3 campaign delivers highly-relevant content that appeals to a young and dynamic digital target audience and fits perfectly into their world of experience. However, rollout through the appropriate channels is just as important as the content itself. Social media and the brand’s own online presence will therefore be a priority for “On a Mission”.

On a mission to Mars.

The communications highlight of the campaign is clearly a very special test drive: Using virtual reality, the BMW X3 takes customers and fans on the world’s first test drive through the breath-taking scenery of Mars – quite literally pushing the boundaries. Spectacular images and evocative sounds transform the trip to Mars into an immersive experience. During a virtual reality drive across the atmospheric and ever-changing surface of the planet – reminiscent of a Hollywood film – different features of the BMW X3 are presented as part of the “BMW Personal Co-Pilot”.

The 360° experience can be enjoyed on all widely-available smartphones through YouTube or using VR glasses, and will be integrated into the BMW brand’s own online channels. The Mars mission will also be shown at selected BMW dealers and branches and integrated into brand events and mailings using Google Cardboard.

TV spot and launch film with real-life extreme athletes.

The TV commercial features protagonists who live for their mission: The BMW X3 accompanies Swede Freddie Meadows as he ice-surfs in the Arctic; free mountain rider Martin Söderström on his daredevil ride across rocky ridges; and extreme campers Fatima Gil and Vicky Vega perched on the slopes of steep rock walls. The stunning natural surroundings showcase the off-road character and dynamic performance of the new BMW X3. That the TV spot uses only real-life extreme athletes, not actors, underlines the authenticity and passion of the powerful SAV.

The launch film, which will primarily be used for online communications, shows photographer Pablo Durana on a tour through the Chilean Andes with extreme mountain-biker Trond Hansen. As well as highlighting many aspects of the new BMW X3, it also features the SPECIALIZED for BMW Turbo Levo FSR 6Fattie mountain bike, an exclusive cooperation between BMW and premium bike manufacturer SPECIALIZED.

The TV commercial and launch film also provide the basis for a series of short clips that will run in all BMW-brand social media channels and digital advertising spaces. In this way, the activities “surfing”, “mountain biking”, “camping” and “art” can be targeted towards users with those interests to amplify the reach of the BMW X3.

The films’ protagonists are an integral part of all elements of the campaign and also appear in the print motifs. In this way, “On a Mission” creates a consistent presence with high recognition value across all channels. The campaign will also make use of the many protagonists’ own social media channels and their vast fan communities.

Unique vehicle configurator for Facebook.

Based on the Facebook Canvas ad, BMW has developed an extensive interactive vehicle visualiser, with a level of detail and range of functions not previously seen on this platform. Users have fun creating their own individual BMW X3 directly in the Facebook app, choosing their preferred design line, paint colour, wheel rims and interior configuration.

The visualiser consists of 64 nested individual Canvas ads. This was a major challenge for both planning and realisation. The visualiser will be rolled out through the international BMW Facebook account and local BMW markets. The interactive experience ends with an invitation to test-drive the new BMW X3.

“The visualiser on Facebook represents a totally new way for us to generate leads through social media,” explains Uwer Dreher. “Implementation with so many individual Canvas ads was definitely complex and challenging. But we are very proud to be able to offer our fans this unique feature.”

Mountain bikes and expeditions.

Exciting product collaborations and the BMW brand’s popular winter-sports activities, under the name “BMW Mountains”, will further enrich the campaign.

BMW Lifestyle and premium bike manufacturer SPECIALIZED will be presenting an exceptional mountain bike: a limited special edition of the Specialized Turbo Levo, the SPECIALIZED for BMW Turbo Levo FSR 6Fattie. The two premium brands share a unique passion for sporty dynamics, a love of innovative design and technologies, and constantly strive to reinvent themselves.

Under the “BMW Mountains” banner, the BMW X3 is supporting the “No Man’s Land” expedition of extreme skiers Matthias Mayr and Matthias Haunholder, as they attempt to become the first to ski down Mount Tyree in the Antarctic. The BMW X3 will be their trusty companion on the journey from Buenos Aires to Punta Arenas. Once they reach Antarctica, they will cover several hundred more kilometres on skis and by kite. BMW will follow the expedition with live feeds and stories in its own digital channels. A film about the adventures of the two extreme skiers will be released to the general public in 2018.

Successful member of the X family.

BMW created the mid-sized SAV (Sports Activity Vehicles) segment in 2003 with the BMW X3. More than 1.5 million units of the first two model generations have since been sold worldwide. The new BMW X3 is now set to continue this success story, with even more striking and dynamic styling and a luxurious interior. Munich. The new BMW X2 is still far from being ready for its market debut. Nevertheless, the newest Sports Activity Coupé in the BMW X family is beginning to get out and about in its most congenial environment – the urban jungle.

As a matter of fact, it was noted during Fashion Week, which is being held in Milan from 20 to 25 September, wearing an outfit perfect for the occasion. The athletic silhouette of the new BMW X2 was attired in a spectacular camouflage effect, with tones of yellow, gray, and black that highlight its sporty and stylish qualities. The unusual underlying design is based on a digital model and expresses the innovative spirit and the orientation towards the future of the BMW Group.

Therefore it is not surprising that the new BMW X2 wearing Camouflage Digital is at the center of attention in the most characteristic and cool locations in Milan. Anyone who encountered it during its excursion into city life was able to recognize it immediately for its extravagant, contemporary, and sporty design. The outing offered a good opportunity to see first hand the new interpretation of BMW X design aimed at young people who are extroverted and active.

Richmond Hill, ON. The all-new 2018 BMW X3 was unveiled today at BMW Plant Spartanburg, South Carolina, where it will be produced alongside the BMW X4, BMW X5, and BMW X6.

BMW is at home in Spartanburg, producing 411,171 BMW X models last year, making it the largest BMW Group’s global production facility with approximately 70 percent of the vehicles exported to 140 markets worldwide, thereby making BMW the largest vehicle exporter in the U.S. by value. BMW Plant Spartanburg has a deep level of localization, and provides and supports nearly 70,000 jobs in the U.S. In 2003, the BMW X3 was the car that launched the premium compact SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) segment. Since then, BMW has recorded more than 1.5 million vehicles worldwide and 378,803 in the US alone. Today, the all-new BMW X3 is set to write the next chapter in this success story with a more striking, dynamic design language, powerful yet efficient drive systems with a luxurious appeal. Like all members of the successful X family, it blends standout-driving qualities on any terrain with unrestricted everyday usability.

The all-new 2018 BMW X3 will be available at Canadian BMW Retailers November 2017. Pricing will be announced closer to market launch.

The exterior design with new distinctive looks.

The all-new BMW X3 elevates the already boldly dynamic design language of its predecessor. The third generation of the pioneering premium compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) treads a familiar BMW X family path in combining rugged off-road looks with generous presence. The exterior dimensions of the All-new BMW X3 may be largely unchanged, however, the wheelbase has been extended by 5 centimetres and its long hood, extremely short front overhang with finely balanced proportions, emphasize the perfect 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear axle.

For the first time on a BMW X model, the front fascia features a muscular “three-dimensional” kidney grille and fog lights featuring a hexagonal design, underlining the confident character of the All-new BMW X3. Moving to the rear, the tail light housings whose three-dimensional look with the standard LED or optional Adaptive Full LED Headlights, give them considerable visual impact. A downward-sloping roof spoiler and twin exhaust tailpipes add to the muscular appearance.

First ever factory-installed trailer hitch available in a BMW SAV.

The all-new BMW X3 will be the first BMW SAV in Canada to feature a factory-installed trailer hitch. With a towing capacity of 2000 kg/4400 lb (when equipped with trailer brakes) and a 2” receiver, the new X3 will be compatible with a broad range of BMW Accessories including tongues, drop tongues, towing balls, a step to help access roof mounted accessories and several varieties of bike racks.

Standard xLine design.

The standard xLine design emphasizes the robustness of the Sports Activity Vehicle and stands out with numerous trim elements in Satin aluminum and Silver matte, and 19-inch wheels with All-season Run Flat Tires. On the interior, the driver and front passenger are welcomed by standard Sport Seats with power adjustable side bolsters, and an Anthracite headliner.

M Sport Package.

The M Sport Package focuses its attentions on the dynamic prowess of the All-new BMW X3 with the M Aerodynamic kit (front apron with larger air intakes, side skirt trim, and a diffusor-style rear apron). Also included are Shadowline exterior trim and M Double-Spoke 20-inch Wheels with Mixed Performance Run Flat Tires. The interior includes a new M Sport leather steering wheel and M door sill finishers .

Interior and equipment: improved material quality and ergonomics.

The interior of the all-new BMW X3 follows BMW tradition with its driver-focused and ergonomically optimized cockpit layout and carries over many aspects of the car’s exterior design. For instance, hexagonal forms and precise, sloping edges also play a central role in the interior. The interior as a whole displays exceptional material quality, fit, and finish, with carefully thought ergonomics. One example here is the storage concept, which offers more storage space than ever before and ensures it is easier to access.

The all-new BMW X3 comes standard with several new, comfort enhancing features not offered on its predecessor. These include 3-zone automatic climate control, which adds separate temperature controls for the rear compartment to those for the driver and front passenger. To enhance rear compartment comfort, the angle of the standard 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrests can be adjusted individually. This feature also allows the backrests to be released remotely from the load compartment, which expands the standard load capacity of 550 to 1600 litres.

Newly available convenient functions include front ventilated seats for driver and front passenger to maximize comfort on warm days. Customers can also give the interior a roomier feel with the 250 mm longer panoramic glass moonroof.

Contour lighting above the trim strip in the instrument panel is included with the available Premium Package Essential/Enhanced, which directs a soft stream of light downwards from below the

accent strip, lights the interior in a distinctive and relaxing ambience. At night, the iDrive display appears to be floating above the instrument panel. Customers can choose from six color tones.

Enhanced active prowess and improved comfort over all terrain.

The dynamic handling qualities of the all-new BMW X3 are directly linked to its ideal 50:50 weight distribution, its meticulously honed chassis and xDrive, BMW’s Intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which made its debut in 2003 when the first generation of the BMW X3 originally launched. Not only has the system been offering superior grip on slippery surfaces ever since, it has had a beneficial effect on driving dynamics too. This system is networked with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) allowing the power split between all four wheels to be constantly varied, providing the handling characteristics for which BMW is renowned.

The new Driving Dynamics Control toggle switch now also offers Adaptive Mode when the vehicle is equipped with Dynamic Damper Control in addition to configurations such as, ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ (M40i model only) modes.

Chassis dynamics: reduced mass and improved axle kinematics.

The 3^rd generation of the BMW X3 continues to rely on its winning formula of a double-joint spring strut front axle and a five-link rear set-up at the rear. At the same time, this refreshingly engaging Sports Activity Vehicle delivers an even sportier driving experience than its predecessor without compromising on ride comfort. The engineers have succeeded in reducing a considerable amount in unsprung mass by fitting aluminum swivel bearings and lighter tubular anti-roll bars as well as optimizing wheel location at the front. Handling dynamics, straight-line stability and steering feel have all benefited from the improved axle kinematics and the Electric Power Steering system with Servotronic.

In an effort to improve handling dynamics, the rear bias of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system has been increased. Intelligent AWD management constantly adjusts the torque bias as the driving situation demands ensuring optimum driving dynamics.

In its basic specification, the all-new BMW X3 comes with 19-inch light-alloy wheels while wheels up to 21 inches in diameter are available depending on the equipment and engine variant. The powerful braking system features lightweight brakes offering optimized performance as well as an Electric Parking Brake. A broad array of electronic control systems help the driver maximize safety at all times. These systems include: Driving Stability Control (DSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Start-Off Assistant, Performance Control, and Hill Descent Control (HDC).

The all-new BMW X3 M40i. First M Performance model in the X3 model line-up with best-in-segment acceleration.

The first ever M Performance model in the X3 lineup sets new standards with its sharper dynamics, high level of exclusivity and standout emotional appeal. The 3.0-liter M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology 6-cylinder inline engine ensures the All-new BMW X3 M40i sits at the top end of the model range. Output of 355 hp propels the flagship X3 from 0 to 100 km/h in a best-in-segment time of 4.8 seconds. The X3 M40i also includes a wealth of model-specific set-up and equipment features, which both underpin and lend added impact to the exceptional performance credentials of this SAV.

The BMW X3 M40i is equipped with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission with Launch Control. This transmission is a perfect match for the engine’s dynamic characteristics and can be operated using shift paddles on the steering wheel. In addition, its xDrive all-wheel-drive system has a far more pronounced rear bias than on other models. The Performance Control feature integrated into the DSC system and acting on the rear wheels has been reconfigured to produce agility and traction for which M Performance models are known for. Moving into the cabin, Sport seats and “M40i” logos adorning, for instance, the front door sills and instrument panel, provide visual emphasis of the car’s performance capabilities.

Among these features are the standard – and strikingly dynamic – M Performance-specific exterior design cues, which include the M Aerodynamic kit with design elements finished in Cerium Grey Metallic. The flap-controlled M Sport exhaust system with Black Chrome tailpipe embellishers, M Sport brakes, M Sport suspension with M Performance specific tuning, Variable sport steering Adaptive M Sport Suspension, and 21-inch cast light-alloy wheels provide a distinctive sporting character.

Dynamic options: M Sport suspension, Dynamic Damper Control,M Sport brakes and Variable sport steering.

The M Sports suspension, which is standard on the M40i model, offers the keen driver a firmer suspension (springs, dampers and anti-roll bars). Adaptive M Suspension is optionally available on the M40i model, offering electronically controlled dampers and even sportier suspension settings. Similarly, Dynamic Damper Control is available on the 30i model, and includes electronically controlled dampers that adapt the damper responses to the road surface and driving situation. At the same time, the driver can use the Driving Dynamics Control toggle switch to vary the basic suspension characteristics as they please between the more comfortable and sportier ends of the scale.

M Sport brakes are standard on the all-new BMW X3 M40i and feature blue-painted aluminum four-piston fixed calipers at the front and amply proportioned brake discs have high levels of thermal resistance to deliver phenomenal stopping power despite their extremely low weight. The standard Variable sport steering from the BMW X3 M40i is optionally available on the BMW X3 xDrive30i model.

Perfectly at home on rough terrain.

The all-new BMW X3 boasts the same off-road skills as its predecessor. The high ground clearance of 8 inches helps to ensure unhindered progress, not only when travelling along rutted gravel or sand tracks, over churned-up ground or in deep snow, but also on city roads while going over speed bumps. The approach angle (23.1°) and departure angle (21.4°) of the all-new BMW X3 together with its breakover angle of 17.4° create plenty of margin for negotiating steep sections or crests. Moreover, with a fording depth of 500 millimetres, the BMW X3 can tackle water crossings with ease as well.

The powertrain: Latest generation 4 and 6-cylinder inline engines.

The all-new BMW X3 line-up from launch consists of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology 2.0-liter 4-cylinder inline gasoline engine with Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing and Valvetronic fully variable intake lift, a map-controlled oil pump, electric arc wire-sprayed cylinder barrels, Twin-scroll exhaust turbocharger and electrically adjustable waste gate valve. The latest M Performance model, the BMW X3 M40i comes with a 3.0-liter M Performance TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder inline gasoline engine. The intake manifold integrated indirect charge air intercooler allows for a lower charge air volume between the compressor and intake valves, noticeably improving engine response. This translates to shorter air routing, faster boost pressure build-up, and throttle response.

The BMW X3 M40i: new flagship model.

The all-new BMW X3 M40i heralds the arrival of the first ever M Performance Automobile in this model series. Power comes from a new M Performance TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder inline engine, which blends its insatiable appetite for revs and sublime pulling power with exemplary smoothness and efficiency. The 3.0-liter unit generates power output of 355 hp from 5,500 – 6,500 rpm. Peak torque of 369 lb-ft from 1,520 – 4,800 rpm, provide a 69 lb-ft – or 23 percent – increase (compared to the outgoing BMW X3 xDrive35i). This performance arsenal equips the all-new BMW X3 M40i to a best in segment sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

The BMW X3 xDrive30i. More power. More efficient.

The 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder gasoline engine in the All-new BMW X3 xDrive30i has an output of 248 hp (8 hp more than the outgoing BMW X3 xDrive28i). Maximum torque has of 258 lb-ft is on tap between just 1,450 and 4,800 rpm. The All-new BMW X3 xDrive30i reaches 100 km/hfrom rest in 6.3 seconds.

8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with shift paddles.

All models come standard with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with shift paddles. In the BMW X3 xDrive30i, the transmission tuning is matched to the engine’s specific performance characteristics, while the X3 M40i model’s transmission has been tuned to M Performance specifications. The transmission is designed to be even more efficient, helping to lower fuel consumption and emissions.

Munich/Arjeplog. Driving dynamic and reliability are just two of the major characteristics of any BMW automobile. To ensure that a BMW functions in all conditions and that the customer is able to enjoy unrestricted access to that brand-typical “driving pleasure” at any time, BMW invests a great deal of time and know-how in both the construction and the testing of new automobiles. Long before a new model series arrives on the market, it will have had to withstand possibly the most severe endurance tests. This includes, for example, testing under extreme climatic conditions such as those prevailing in scorching hot deserts or freezing cold winter landscapes.

Fine tuning for optimal safety and maximum driving enjoyment.

Moreover, the extensive ice surfaces of frozen lakes and the numerous remote roads with their firmly packed layers of snow offer excellent conditions for fine tuning of the settings activated via the Driving Experience Control function – and hence for the application of maximum driving pleasure and best possible driving safety. As a result, engineers are in a position to sense the vehicle’s dynamic behaviour much more accurately and synchronize the control of driver assistant systems such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) even more precisely and to attune it to the vehicle as a whole. It is this painstaking development work that later provides the customer with a competently tuned chassis for that typical BMW driving pleasure.

Ideal preconditions for testing the BMW X3 in the polar region.

Within the framework of the final winter trials, a BMW testing team completed a fastidious testing programme in wintery North Sweden. In the landscape around the small town of Arjeplog, pre-series models of the new BMW X3 had to prove that they are also able to withstand cold, ice and snow. Located in the historic province of Lapland barely 56 kilometres south of the polar circle, Arjeplog offers the ideal conditions for this. An abundant amount of snow and temperatures of minus 20 degrees and below cause the many lakes in the surrounding area to freeze over. The resulting vast, even surfaces serve as proving grounds on which steering, suspension and drive characteristics can be meticulously tested and various different technical solutions compared against one another. In the process, the intelligent four-wheel technology xDrive is able to demonstrate its advantages by not only ensuring best possible traction on icy surfaces but, thanks to fully variable distribution of torque, also by optimizing handling agility, this in turn resulting in enhanced driving dynamics and active driving safety.

BMW, one of the world’s most successful premium carmakers, also boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.
BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner, further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i “Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability. This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts, and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

 Richmond Hill, ON. BMW today announced the arrival of the enhanced, 2015 BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle®. In 2003 BMW founded the mid-size SAV segment with the launch of the original BMW X3. Since 2003, the BMW X3 has been a paragon of sporty dynamics, premium ambience and robust agility – accumulating sales of more than one million units worldwide in the process. The second-generation BMW X3 has made a compelling case for itself since its introduction in 2010, boasting the best interior and cargo measurements and the greatest versatility in its class.

Now, the new BMW X3 is set to build on this leadership with the addition of a  BMW Advanced Diesel model to the X3 lineup, further enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions. 

 The exterior and interior design of the new BMW X3 receive stylistic revisions that add further depth to the vehicle’s practicality, while updates to other details promise to impress the X3 customer.

The new BMW X3 will go on sale in spring of 2014 as a 2015 model. The all-new X3 xDrive 28d will debut with an MSRP of $45,000,  while the X3 xDrive 28i xDrive and the top-of-the-line

 Dynamic appearance and exclusive ambience.

The new BMW X3 cuts a visually more powerful figure with its new, modified twin-circular headlights (LED headlights are optional), a more eye-catching kidney grille, new front and rear bumpers, and exterior mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators – all of which shine a figurative spotlight on the signature BMW X model design features. A high level of perceived quality also defines the interior of the new BMW X3. Chrome applications, a center console with automatic climate control system in a high-gloss black-panel display, and new cup holders with a sliding cover for the center console underline the vehicle’s premium appearance. New exterior colors, upholstery designs, interior trim and light-alloy wheels enable even more refined individualization. The new xLine allows owners to lend greater emphasis still to the dynamic and robust SAV character of the BMW X3. And the Smart Opener for the automatic tailgate further enhances the already impressive functionality of the BMW X3.

  New BMW Advanced Diesel engine

The new BMW X3 is available from launch with a choice of one diesel and two gasoline engines, with outputs ranging from 181 hp to 300 hp. The state-of-the-art engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology guarantee outstanding performance combined with low fuel consumption.

The new X3 xDrive28d will feature BMW’s 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel 4-cylinder engine. It has an output of 181 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, available from 1,750 rpm, and will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The X3 xDrive28d will accelerate from 0 –100 km/h in just over eight seconds. BMW Advanced Diesel technology includes Selective Catalyst Reduction to make the new X3 a clean diesel.

The new BMW X3 advances the company’s commitment to the integration of driver, vehicle and outside world, an area in which BMW is an undisputed leader. Among the outstanding new features from BMW ConnectedDrive on board the BMW X3 are the iDrive controller with touchpad functionality  (for text input using finger movements), Parking Assistant, the full-color BMW Head-Up Display,  and Active Driving Assistant with ACC Stop & Go, including Lane Departure Warning, Frontal Collision Warning, Pedestrian Warning, and City Collision Mitigation.

Impressive new standard features.

The new BMW X3 now offers a number of new standard features for the Canadian market previously not found on the outgoing model enhancing the safety, functionality and appearance of the vehicle.  Bi-xenon headlights with dual LED daytime running lights replace halogen bulbs as the standard front headlight unit providing improved light distribution and heightened visual appeal.  The standard sound system has been upgraded to the Hi-fi Loudspeaker System featuring 9 speakers with 205 watts on tap.  Finally, additional practicality has been added with the through-load system, which adds 40:20:40 split folding seats to the rear bench and cupholders to the rear centre armrest

Design and functionality: Powerful appearance and maximum versatility.

The design language of the new BMW X3 underlines the leading role it has traditionally occupied in the mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle segment. Taking its cue from its predecessor, the new BMW X3 blends exclusivity and dynamic appeal and couples it with impressive versatility. The new model is immediately identifiable as a member of the successful BMW X family and cuts an even more impressive figure on the road. Its design showcases an SAV that will carry out everyday tasks with consummate ease and do so while delivering unbeatable driving pleasure.

Striking presence.

Aside from its length, which has grown by a single centimeter, the new BMW X3 has the same compact, usable dimensions of its successful predecessor. However, the new BMW X3 comes with a host of exclusive details. At the front end, for example, the newly designed twin circular headlights stand out immediately. They can also be ordered in full-LED specification as an option and, like the LED front fog lights, lend even greater expression to the premium profile of the BMW X3. The characteristic, more strikingly-presented BMW kidney grille has an even sharper visual impact with its new surround, and powerful, newly designed front and rear bumpers highlight the poised and assured appearance of the new BMW X3. The LED turn signal indicators are now housed in the new exterior mirrors, while four new exterior paint shades and four newly styled light-alloy wheel variants broaden the scope for individualization.

Exclusivity and a high level of perceived quality in the interior.

The new X3 leads the way in its segment in terms of both interior spaciousness and rear load capacity (from 550-1600 litres). The interior is a compelling proposition with its carefully selected, exquisite materials. Understated chrome applications, the center console with automatic climate control system in a high-gloss black-panel look, and wood trim with chrome accents contribute further to the high-quality surroundings. Adding the final touches to the premium ambience are new cup holders in the center console with a sliding cover and the standard-fitted sport leather steering wheel. Customers can also choose from four new upholstery colors and four new interior trims.

xLine and M Sport offer boundless individualization.

The high-quality material and color concept shines the spotlight on the premium profile of the new BMW X3. xLine, which lends even further emphasis to the dynamic and robust SAV character of the X3, sees BMW expanding the scope for individualization. xLine can be identified from the outside by gleaming metallic inserts in the bumpers, satin aluminum side cladding and bars in the air intakes, and simulated under guards at the front and rear. It also allows customers to choose from additional leather upholstery variants, trim options and includes 19-inch light-alloy wheels.

The superb dynamic qualities of the new BMW X3 can be showcased to even greater effect by specifying M Sport, with the M aerodynamic package and High-gloss Shadow Line trim maximizing the vehicle’s presence on the road. In addition, customers can choose from six paint finishes and two exclusive light-alloy wheel options in 19 and 20-inch format. In the cockpit, Anthracite roof liner and sports seats in various leather upholstery variants intensify the sporting theme. Technical highlights include the eight-speed sport automatic transmission, sport steering and suspension settings tuned to deliver even sharper dynamic performance.

Enhancing everyday functionality.

The BMW X3 also builds further on its segment-leading status when it comes to everyday usability and versatility. All BMW X3 models are fitted with a 6.5” iDrive display and iDrive Controller. BMW Assist eCall, meanwhile, uses an integrated telephone unit to summon rapid assistance. A range of other innovative options adds further to the functionality of the new X3. The Smart Opener, for instance, makes accessing the load compartment much easier; a short movement of the foot below the rear bumper causes it to open or close the tailgate automatically. A storage package including a reversible floor section, folding box, partition elements and a range of different luggage nets allows objects of any kind to be stowed away easily, safely and tidily, and the 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat enables maximum flexibility. Elsewhere, the Hi-Fi Sound System Professional from Harman Kardon promises audio pleasure for the new BMW X3.

Dynamic and economical engines.

The high-revving character for which BMW is renowned, plus excellent power delivery, compelling refinement and impressive efficiency, are also stand-out features of the cutting-edge gasoline engines available for the new BMW X3. Boasting High Precision Direct Injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft control and Valvetronic fully variable valve timing, the gasoline engines make a convincing case for themselves with outstanding dynamics yet incredibly low fuel consumption and emissions. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit in the X3 xDrive28i, meanwhile, develops 241 hp and peak torque of 258 lb-ft. Fitted with the eight-speed automatic transmission, the X3 xDrive28i sprints from rest to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, The new BMW X3 xDrive35i also meets the highest dynamic standards. Its 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine develops 300hp and produces maximum torque of 300 lb-ft, which is on tap between 1,300 rpm and 5,000 rpm.

Third-generation  xDrive all-wheel drive.

The intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system delivers optimum traction, need-based power distribution, and further improved dynamics and driving safety. A new xDrive status display with three-dimensional graphics in the Control Display keeps the driver informed of the vehicle’s body roll and pitch. On vehicles equipped with a navigation system, a compass display is also shown in the instrument cluster.

Now in its Third Generation, BMW xDrive incorporates flexibility, responsiveness, and excellent handling characteristics. The system marks a significant evolution in xDrive capabilities, which has always depended upon networking the Dynamic Stability Control with the all-wheel drive system.  With the overall Integrated Chassis Management system, all three control circuits work in parallel.  This refined interaction achieves even quicker reactions to changing driving conditions and enhances xDrive’s already outstanding handling dynamics.

BMW xDrive is unique in design and construction. In normal conditions, driving torque is always transmitted to the rear wheels, and most of the time to all four wheels.  Normal torque split is 80% rear/20% front. The portion of torque transmitted to the front wheels is controlled by a multi-disc clutch that can be fully open, fully engaged or at any level of partial engagement in between.  The torque split between rear and front wheels is thus steplessly variable. Engagement pressure on the multi-disc clutch is directed by an electronic control system in response to actual road and driving conditions. This gives xDrive a dynamic ability that is unparalleled by other all-wheel drive systems.

xDrive does more than just optimize traction; it can also enhance both agility and stability on grippy as well as slippery road surfaces.  Using the same type of logic that Dynamic Stability Control employs to recognize and correct for excessive over- or understeer, xDrive adjusts the front/rear torque split to avoid these tendencies.  If the system senses undesirable oversteer, it closes the multi-disc clutch completely, sending the maximum possible torque to the front wheels.  In the case of excess understeer, xDrive opens the clutch completely, sending no driving torque to the front wheels. The Third Generation of BMW xDrive truly raises the bar for all-wheel drive systems in both passenger cars and sports activity vehicles.

Appearing yet again in the newest generation of xDrive is BMW’s Hill Descent Control. Debuting in 2000 original BMW X5, Hill Descent Control made it possible to control and steer the vehicle in downright dangerous and slippery conditions without even using the brake pedal. When activated, Hill Descent individually applies the brakes where needed to prevent slippage and increased speed. The driver simply needs to set the desired speed to descend with (8-25 km/h), release the brake and gas pedals, and navigate down the hill. Hill Descent control comes standard on all xDrive equipped models.

8-speed automatic transmission.

Many new BMW models feature an 8-speed automatic transmission, which brings smooth shifting, sportiness and efficiency to new levels of perfection. Compared to the 6-speed automatic offered in past BMW models, the 8-speed has “taller” cruising gears that make a significant contribution to reduced fuel consumption and emissions, as well as quietness. Its wider spread of ratios from lowest to highest gear enhances acceleration and response across the range of driving speeds. The revolutionary design allows for direct shifts from cruising gears to acceleration gears.

This new automatic’s attributes have been achieved via an innovative concept that provides the two additional ratios (7 and 8) with no increase in bulk or weight. In an arrangement never before employed in an 8-speed automatic, four planetary gear sets and five clutch packs are controlled in a way that no more than two of the five clutch packs are freewheeling at any given time. The modest increase in the number of mechanical elements allows the new transmission to achieve unusually high efficiency: the so-called “gearing efficiency” is higher than 98% in all eight gears. In 6th gear, it’s highest of all because that is direct drive, with no gearing reduction at all. Combine this with reduced friction and the ability to keep the torque converter “locked up” more of the total driving time, and the transmission becomes very much a part of the overall BMW Efficient Dynamics concept.

The wider spread of ratios allows the engine to run at lower speeds, often in the “tallest” gear, 8th. Yet even with this wider spread, the steps between adjacent gears are reduced; in turn this means a stronger, smoother flow of power during acceleration. And for the same reason, faster shifts are a further benefit because only one clutch pack is disengaged to shift up or down by one or two gears. On the other hand, downshifting more than two gears is accomplished as a direct shift. For example, a downshift from 8th to 2nd gear is made with only one clutch pack disengagement, and thus occurs without stepping down through the intermediate gears. So, at one instant the driver can be enjoying the quiet, fuel-efficient low rpm of 8th gear, and in the next instant getting maximum acceleration.

On the new BMW X3, a Sport Automatic transmission option with shift paddles is also available in conjunction with M Sport or as a stand-alone option.

Coasting function and ECO PRO mode reduce fuel consumption.

Other features contributing to the economical running of the new BMW X3 are the ECO PRO mode selectable via the Driving Experience Control switch and the coasting function of the eight-speed automatic gearbox, which disengages the powertrain at speeds of (approx. 50–160 km/h) when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator.

Safety, comfort and infotainment.

The new BMW X3 sees BMW ConnectedDrive providing further evidence of its groundbreaking role in the link-up of the driver, vehicle and outside world. Among the outstanding new features from BMW ConnectedDrive on board the new BMW X3 is the latest, enhanced-capability generation of the Navigation system, complete with ECO PRO route guidance and an iDrive Controller with integrated touchpad. The touchpad allows drivers or passengers to use their finger to write letters for text inputs – a navigation destination, for example. Another highlight is the full-color Head-Up Display, which projects all important driving information and the assistance systems displays into the driver’s field of view. Among the other systems available as an option to further enhance safety is Driving Assistant Plus with Active Cruise Control Stop & Go, which includes features such as Lane Departure Warning, Frontal Collision Warning, Pedestrian Warning, and City Collision Mitigation.. Aiding comfort, meanwhile, is the Parking Assistant, which automatically steers the vehicle into parking spaces parallel to the road. BMW ConnectedDrive Services & Apps also make mobility services and smartphone applications available inside the vehicle via the central Control Display, and innovations such as the Concierge Services and ARTTI (Advanced Real Time Traffic Information) system can also be accessed.

Munich.Thanks to its segment-leading dynamic handling and versatility, the new BMW X3 has emerged as a highly successful model in the international car markets within a matter of months. The fact that it also assumes an exemplary role on the safety front has now been confirmed by Europe’s leading crash test programme. In the latest Euro NCAP crash test, the BMW X3 achieved the highest rating of 5 stars. The second-generation Sports Activity Vehicle earned its top marks in this challenging test for new vehicles thanks to its comprehensive range of standard safety equipment and effective occupant protection in various types of collision.

Achieving the best rating in the Euro NCAP crash test is proof of the very high level of the safety concept developed for the BMW X models. The new BMW X3 boasts an extremely stable body structure, and the forces exerted on the vehicle in a collision are deflected along precisely defined load paths and absorbed by generous deformation zones. Consequently, the passenger cell fulfils its function as a survival space even in serious collisions. Standard safety equipment inside the new BMW X3 includes front, side and curtain head airbags that protect both the driver and the passengers from injury. Also standard are belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters for the front seats and ISOFIX systems in the rear for attaching child seats, as well as the option of deactivating the front passenger airbag. The restraint systems are controlled by the central safety electronics, which take into account the type and severity of an accident to trigger the most effective protective features in each case.

In their evaluation of the crash test results, the assessors concluded that the new BMW X3 provides a high degree of occupant safety in all seats. Its stable passenger cell provides comprehensive injury protection in a front-end collision for both the driver and the passengers, regardless of a person’s size and the position of their seat. Here the Sports Activity Vehicle was awarded outstanding ratings for the protection of children aged around three years or 18 months in the relevant-sized child seats. For its side impact protection, the BMW X3 likewise achieved the maximum available points.

The new BMW X3 earned an outstanding rating for its active safety features as well. The Sports Activity Vehicle comes as standard with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC), which is linked to BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. Thanks to its wide-ranging functions, including Braking Assistant, Cornering Brake Control and the traction mode DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), Dynamic Stability Control ensures easily controllable and secure handling even in challenging driving situations. Further standard features on the BMW X3 include a Tyre Defect Indicator that warns the driver in good time of a loss of pressure in any individual wheel.

The test procedure of the NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) ranks as one of the most rigorous tests worldwide to which new vehicles are subjected. The Euro NCAP test is a benchmark for crash safety recognised throughout Europe by governments, automobile clubs and consumer associations. The test profile includes, among other aspects, a frontal collision, a side-on crash and a side impact against a steel post. Since 2009, electronic safety features have also been taken into account, along with additional injury risks in a wide range of collisions.

Last year the Munich premium automobile manufacturer was distinguished by the safety testing institute Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) with a special award for the BMW Assist Advanced eCall, the advanced emergency call system with automatic localisation and accident severity detection which is also available for the BMW X3.

The new BMW X3 has made an instant and lasting impression on fans of all-wheel-drive vehicles: readers of Germany’s Off Road magazine voted it their favourite in the “SUV” category. This accolade sees the new BMW X3 following in the tyre tracks of its predecessor model, which was voted “Off-Roader of the Year” twice in succession – in 2006 and 2007. The latest Off Road reader poll also conferred outstanding rankings on two other BMW X models: the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé was runner-up in the “Crossover” category while the new BMW X5 came third among the “Luxury Off-Roaders”.

This triple success for the family of BMW X models is further proof of just how attractive and popular a vehicle concept it is. Its triumphal career began in 1999 with the unveiling of the first-generation BMW X5, with which BMW called into being the Sports Activity Vehicle segment. This was soon followed by both the first BMW X3 and the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Its electronically controlled drive distribution not only made for surefooted traction and maximum stability on slippery surfaces, but superior dynamics on the road as well, creating a unique rendition of hallmark BMW driving pleasure. With the BMW X6 and the BMW X1, this concept found its way into further vehicle segments. Both models remain unrivalled in the competitive field of premium automobiles.

By contrast, the new BMW X3 joins a segment that is already inhabited by other premium carmakers as well. Thanks to its systematically honed qualities, however, the BMW X3 once again sets benchmarks within that category – a fact reflected in its being voted “Off-Roader of the Year”. The engines available for this Sports Activity Vehicle deliver superior performance and, thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, exemplarily low fuel consumption and emission figures as well. In spring 2011 the engine portfolio comprises two petrol and two diesel engines with output ranging from 135 kW/184 hp to 225 kW/306 hp. Depending on the choice of engine, the new BMW X3 features an eight-speed automatic transmission either as standard or as an option. All-new suspension technology brings with it a palpable improvement in agility and ride comfort compared with the predecessor model.

With luggage capacity that can be extended from 550 to 1, 600 litres and a folding, 40 : 20 : 40-split rear seat backrest the new BMW X3 boasts the greatest available space and flexibility in its segment. It also comes with a choice of innovative equipment features, driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive that is unique among the competition. As an example, the new BMW X3 is the only model in its class that has the option of a Head-Up Display and allows for in-car internet use.

The vote for “Off-Roader of the Year” ranks among the most important and traditional reader polls in Germany. Going back as far as 1982, readers of Off Road magazine have been invited annually to choose their favourite all-wheel-drive vehicles on the German car market. Munich. The BMW Group favoured a smooth transition when carrying out the generation change of the bestseller BMW X3. The end of production of the first generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) was celebrated at the plant of the Austrian production partner Magna Steyr in Graz yesterday. Production of the new BMW X3, which will be launched on the German market on 20 November 2010, will begin today at the BMW Spartanburg plant in the US state of South Carolina. The new BMW X3 is a resolute continuation of the formula for success of the first SAV in its class. With further enhanced agility, noticeably optimised driving comfort, more space than any of its competitors and innovative equipment options, it offers the ideal prerequisites to inherit the position of its predecessor as the benchmark in the segment and to strengthen it further.

Within the last 7 years, the first-generation BMW X3 has written an extraordinary success story. In Graz alone, 605,498 units of the agile all-rounder came off the assembly line during this period. Together with the vehicles produced within the framework of the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly in Russia, Egypt and Thailand, the total figure adds up to 614,824 units. The last vehicle of the first model generation, a Vermilion red metallic BMW X3 xDrive35d, will remain with the Magna Steyr company, where it will be used in future as an executive car. A BMW X3 xDrive20d with full emergency vehicle specifications that had left the assembly line shortly before, will be donated by the BMW Group to a non-profit making organisation. For many years now, the BMW X3 has proved itself to be an ideal emergency vehicle for police and doctors. At the end of its model life, yet another vehicle will now take on this important task in the service of the general public.

As the first and, for some time, the only premium vehicle of its kind, the BMW X3 launched in 2004 and boasting intelligent four-wheel drive BMW xDrive, outstanding handling characteristics and a variable interior, gave reason for spontaneous enthusiasm and a lasting positive response on the international automotive markets. As a result, the concept of establishing benchmarks in the field of driving dynamics within the competitive environment of all-terrain vehicles, which had previously already been successfully pursued in the case of the BMW X5 in a higher segment, was endorsed yet again.

Driving pleasure, premium quality and, in addition, outstanding efficiency helped the BMW X3 become extremely popular and achieve excellent results in independent surveys. Experts have honoured the BMW X3 with several awards for outstanding safety, customer satisfaction, reliability and stable value. These included top rankings in the “Customer Satisfaction Index” (CSI) issued by the J.D. Power market research institute, as well as in the breakdown statistics kept by the Allgemeine Deutsche Automobilclub (ADAC). Twice in succession, the BMW X3 was voted both “Four-Wheel Drive Car of the Year” and “Off Road Vehicle of the Year” respectively by readers of the magazines “Auto Bild Allrad“ and “Off Road”.

The segment established by the first-generation BMW X3 is now also served by other premium vehicle manufacturers. The new BMW X3 faces up to intensified competition with consistently optimised qualities in all relevant disciplines. The engines on offer for this Sports Activity Vehicle boast the best performance and, thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, the most favourable fuel consumption and emission levels as well. The vehicle’s entirely newly developed suspension technology facilitates a clear advantage both in terms of agility and driving comfort. With a loading capacity that can be increased from 550 to 1,600 litres and 40 : 20 : 40 split-folding rear seat backrests, the new BMW X3 offers the largest amount of space and at the same time the highest level of variability in its segment. Moreover, there is a choice of innovative equipment features, driver assistance systems and mobility services by BMW ConnectedDrive that is unique within the competitive environment. For example, the new BMW X3 is the only model in its class to offer the options of a Head-Up Display and Internet access inside the vehicle.

With the model change, the production of the BMW X3 is being relocated to the BMW Spartanburg plant, a facility that has become the expertise centre for BMW X models. So far, the US American location of the BMW Group’s global production network has produced BMW X5 and BMW X6 models. Thanks to substantial extension work and with an investment of around $750 million, the prerequisites for the production of the new BMW X3 and the associated increase in the annual production capacity to around 200,000 vehicles have been created at Spartanburg.

The collaboration between the BMW Group and Magna Steyr also lives on within the framework of the new production structures. In the meantime, production of the MINI Countryman has started in Graz. The fourth model of the brand is not only the first MINI to feature four doors and a large tailgate, but can for the first time also be fitted with four-wheel drive technology. In this way, the Austrian production partner’s expertise in the field of all-terrain vehicles, which has already been demonstrated in the case of the BMW X3, continues to be comprehensively utilised.

Richmond Hill, ON.  BMW Canada is pleased to announce that the all-new, second-generation BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle will debut in early 2011.

In 2004 BMW introduced a new concept to the market: the small, premium Sports Activity Vehicle with all-road capability and unparalleled driving dynamics. This first generation BMW X3 became a best seller in the BMW line…both in the North America and in Europe. Through its lifecycle, over 600,000 original X3s have been sold worldwide. Subsequently, several competitors have entered the now hotly-contested segment.

The new second generation BMW X3 builds on the success of the original by developing its core competencies while adding new technology to establish new benchmarks for agility, efficiency and comfort. The new BMW X3 will be produced in an expansion of the BMW Spartanburg, South Carolina plant and is expected to arrive in Canadian BMW showrooms in early 2011.

Design: Exterior

The design of the new BMW X3 conveys elegance, agility and ruggedness. Up front, the forward-slanting BMW kidney grille and large headlight assembly combine with a powerful-looking front apron and hood boasting six contour lines sweeping down to meet at the kidney grill, giving the X3 a bold presence. The twin round headlights combined with the round fog lamps form the triangular light pattern that is characteristic of BMW SAV design. The upper edge of the headlight assembly sports an accentuating chrome trim, creating the focused design typical of BMW vehicles. BMW’s signature “Corona Rings” are again illuminated to function as the daytime running lights.  When equipped with the optional Xenon headlights, the Corona Rings and daytime running lights are illuminated by bright white LEDs.

The profile of the new BMW X3 is also characterized by a unique interpretation of typical BMW X design features. Powerfully flared wheel arches and the short front and rear overhangs emphasize the robust character of a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle. The dynamic appearance of the silhouette is accentuated by three characteristic lines. The new BMW X3’s brand-typical upper contour line at door handle level rises steeply at first within the front wheel arch area, then flows gently to the rear. Two additional subtle lines follow this contour line above the wheel arches.

The rear is characterized by horizontal lines, underlining the new BMW X3’s robust character. Precise lines and expressively modeled surfaces create attractive light and shadow effects. The taillights, which are located far to the outside, have a distinctive T-shape that is characteristic of the BMW X3.  LED light bars create a distinctive BMW night-time design signature.

Dimensionally, compared to its predecessor the new X3 is 12mm taller, 83mm longer, 28mm wider, and features 12mm more ground clearance. It rides on a wheelbase which is 15mm longer, at 2810mm.

Interior: First-class ambience, intelligent functionality.

A generous and versatile spatial concept, high-grade materials and a characteristic three-dimensional surface design provide the interior of the new BMW X3 with a modern, premium ambience and intelligent functionality. The horizontal lines of the instrument panel accentuate the width of the interior. The driver orientated cockpit, a hallmark of BMW design, is emphasized by the asymmetrically designed center console. The Central Display of the optional navigation system with fourth generation BMW iDrive is harmoniously integrated into the instrument panel. The system features an 22 cm high-resolution trans-reflective screen that is the largest on-board monitor in its vehicle segment. Throughout the vehicle, the new BMW X3 has a large number of storage compartments, trays and cup holders.

The raised seating position facilitates egress and ingress, while providing outstanding outward visibility. The three rear seats offer outstanding comfort for travelling long distances and significantly more leg and elbow room than its predecessor. With cargo volume between 550 and 1,600 litres, the luggage compartment of the new BMW X3 is the largest in its segment. At the same time, the versatility with which available space can be adapted to suit each personal requirement is also unrivalled. The rear seat backrests can be split at a ratio 60 : 40 and can be folded down either individually or together.

The X3 xDrive28i: 6-cylinder power for the entry model.

The entry-level X3 xDrive28i will feature BMW’s award-winning magnesium/aluminum 3.0-litre inline-6. In 2006 and 2007, the “N52” was awarded the distinction of being one of Wards 10 Best Engines of the Year. Its magnesium/aluminum construction, Valvetronic variable valve lift and Double-VANOS are features found only on BMW engines, and it is currently the lightest six cylinder engine for its size class in the world. 

This engine is rated at 240 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 230 lb-ft of torque between 2,600 and 3,000 rpm, and propels the X3 sDrive28i from 0 -100 k/hr in 7.1 seconds (preliminary).  That’s nearly a half-second quicker than the previous X3 xDrive30i equipped with an automatic transmission.

The X3 xDrive35i: Class leading performance and efficiency.

The new top model BMW X3 xDrive35i features BMW’s newest turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 “N55” engine combining direct fuel injection, twin-scroll turbo technology and Valvetronic. The N55 engine develops a maximum output of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 300 lb-ft available all the way from 1,200–5,000 rpm.  Redline is 7,000 rpm. This engine enables the X3 xDrive35i to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds (preliminary).

Both the BMW X3 xDrive28i and the X3 xDrive35i will offer not only the most dynamic driving characteristics in their categories, but also extremely impressive fuel consumption and emission levels within their class.  Official Canadian fuel economy figures will be available closer to market launch.

Playing a supporting role: The innovative new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Like many new BMW models, the new X3 features an 8-speed automatic transmission which brings smooth shifting, sportiness and efficiency to new levels of perfection. Compared to the exemplary 6-speed automatic offered previously, the 8-speed has “taller” cruising gears that make a significant contribution to reduced fuel consumption and emissions, as well as quietness. Its wider spread of ratios from lowest to highest gear enhances acceleration and response across the range of driving speeds. The revolutionary design even allows for direct shifts from 8th gear to 2nd gear for maximum acceleration.

This new automatic’s attributes have been achieved via an innovative concept that provides the two additional ratios (7 and 8) with no increase in bulk or weight. In a ground-breaking arrangement, four planetary gearsets and five clutch packs are controlled in a way that no more than two of the five clutch packs are freewheeling at any given time. The modest increase in the number of mechanical elements allows the new transmission to achieve unusually high efficiency. The so-called “gearing efficiency” is higher than 98% in all eight gears. . In 6th, gearing efficiency is at its optimum because that is a direct drive. Combine this with reduced friction and the ability to keep the torque converter “locked up” more of the total driving time, and the transmission becomes very much a part of the overall BMW EfficientDynamics concept.

New suspension, xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, and made-to-measure dynamics.

The new BMW X3 features standard xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. Now in its third generation, BMW xDrive has been revised to incorporate even more flexibility, quicker response and improved handling characteristics. The new system marks a significant evolution in xDrive capabilities, which has always depended upon a networking of Dynamic Stability Control and the xDrive system.  With the overall Integrated Chassis Management system, all three control circuits work in parallel.  This refined interaction achieves even quicker reactions to changing driving conditions and enhances xDrive’s already outstanding handling dynamics.

BMW xDrive is unique in design and construction. In normal conditions, driving torque is always transmitted to the rear wheels, and most of the time to all four wheels.  Normal torque split is 40% front/60% rear. The portion of torque transmitted to the front wheels is controlled by a multi-disc clutch that can be fully open (100% to the rear), fully engaged or at any level of partial engagement in between.  The torque split between rear and front wheels is thus steplessly variable. Engagement pressure on the multi-disc clutch is directed by an electronic control system in response to actual road and driving conditions. This gives xDrive a dynamic ability that is unparalleled by other all-wheel drive systems.

The new BMW X3 also features completely redeveloped suspension technology. The combination of a double-joint spring-strut suspension at the front and a multi-link rear suspension provides the foundation for agility and driving comfort. The standard Servotronic speed-sensitive power steering contributes to the X3’s precise handling.

The Dynamic Stability Control switch activates BMW’s all-encompassing stability- and traction-control system. A brief push on this button switches the system to Dynamic Traction Control, in which DSC’s intervention threshold is raised; one effect of this setting is improved traction in deep snow. A long push on the same button de-activates DSC altogether, though the anti-lock braking and anti-rollover functions always remain active.

An extensive range of standard and optional BMW ConnectedDrive functions.

BMW ConnectedDrive comprises all offers and technologies which connect our vehicles, drivers and passengers, and the outside world. ConnectedDrive is comprised of three main pillars: Convenience, Infotainment, and Safety. Each of these three pillars operates and interacts seamlessly with iDrive and other onboard controls to create a unique and unmatched experience for both the driver and passengers. These features will be outlined in detail at a later date.

Production at the BMW Spartanburg plant.

The new BMW X3 is produced at the BMW Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. With the production of the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models, the location has become the competence center for BMW X models within the BMW Group’s worldwide production network. Thanks to a comprehensive $750 million expansion, BMW Plant Spartanburg is ready to produce the new X3 for distribution around the world.

The 2010 X3 xDrive28i will be equipped with BMW’s latest generation 3.0 litre in-line six cylinder engine with Valvetronic technology. With an output of 215 horsepower at 6260 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque, the X3 xDrive28i achieves 0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.

The 2010 X3 xDrive30i will have a base MSRP of $45,900 and be equipped with a higher-output version of the 3.0 liter in-line six cylinder engine, producing 260 horsepower and 225lb-ft torque, sprinting from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.

New Standard Equipment for X3 xDrive30i
TheX3 xDrive30i has been further enhanced for the 2010 model year. Standard equipment on the xDrive30i now also includes a Panorama Sunroof, BMW Assist with Bluetooth Wireless Technology as well as 18” Double Spoke Alloy Wheels. This new standard equipment adds the equivalent of $3,100 in customer value.

New for 2010: Executive Editions
Executive Editions of both the xDrive28i and xDrive30i will be offered in MY 2010. The xDrive28i Executive Edition, with an MSRP of $41,000 adds a Panorama Sunroof and Heated Steering Wheel as standard equipment.

vehicles is one of numerous awards BMW has earned from the IIHS over the
years. In fact, as a result of IIHS crash tests in 2000, the 2001 BMW X5
earned the unique distinction of not only being the best SUV, but also being
the safest vehicle ever tested by IIHS up to that point.

"BMW continues to be committed to both our active and passive safety
technologies, and we are pleased to receive the Insurance Institute for Highway

to become a Top Safety Pick, it must earn "Good" ratings in all three Institute
tests. Additionally, as of 2007, winning vehicles must also offer Electronic
Stability Control (ESC) - a standard feature on all BMW vehicles, known as
Dynamic Stability Control. The IIHS requires this feature based on Institute
research indicating that ESC significantly reduces crash risk, especially the
risk of fatal single vehicle crashes, by helping drivers maintain control of
their vehicles during emergency maneuvers.

500,000 BMW X3s - a milestone in a global success story.
From the very beginning, the market success of the BMW X3 was a global
phenomenon. In the year 2007 alone, more than 110,000 units were sold
worldwide. International demand also resulted in the production capacity in
Graz, Austria, being augmented by a so called "completely knocked down
assembly" at three locations outside the European Union. In this way, markets
in which the import of fully assembled vehicles is impeded due for example to
customs regulations, have access to models that are appealing. Therefore, the
BMW X3 is built within the framework of the CKD assembly scheme at the
locations Cairo (Egypt), Kaliningrad (Russia) and Rayong (Thailand). Moreover,
depending on the market environment, there is a choice of different engine
variants. In Europe, three versions of both the petrol and the diesel engine
are currently available for the BMW X3. The performance spectrum ranges from
110kW/150bhp for the BMW X3 2.0i with a four cylinder petrol engine to
210kW/286 bhp for the BMW X3 3.0sd powered by a straight six cylinder oil
burner with Variable TwinTurbo. The 500,000th BMW X3 has a straight six
cylinder petrol engine with a composite magnesium aluminium crankcase and
variable VALVETRONIC valve management under the bonnet. The BMW X3 3.0si
featuring this drivetrain develops an output of 200kW/272 bhp. With its
individualistic ruby red metallic body colour, the anniversary vehicle is also

auctioned off. The auction for the China Charity Organisation will conclude the
Destination XTour 2008. At this outdoor adventure event held annually by the
BMW Group, participants complete a particularly demandingrally on Chinese

Aid for earthquake victims: BMWG roup assumes social responsibility.
A day after the disastrous earthquake in May, BMW China and BMW Brilliance had
donated 1 million CNY (around 93,000 Euros) and three BMW X3 cars as immediate
aid. Together with the China Charity Foundation, the BMW Group instituted the
BMW WarmHeart Fund, donating a further 10 million CNY(around 930,000 Euros) in
response to the far reaching consequences of the earthquake. In donating the
500,000th BMW X3, the company is increasing its commitment in support of the
earthquake victims and emphasising its willingness to assume social
responsibility and to live up to its role as a "corporate citizen".

off-road vehicles and SUVs". Europe's most widely sold all-wheel drive car
magazine "Auto Bild Alles Allrad" invited readers to chose their favourite
vehicles out of nine categories. With a 24.6 % share of the votes, the BMW X3
seized victory well ahead of the17 rival competing in its class, thereby
repeating its success achieved last year. Only a few weeks ago the compact BMW
Sports Activity Vehicle was voted "Off-road Vehicle of the Year" by readers of
the car magazine "Offroad".


A second place for the BMW 3 Series in the category "mid-size all-terrain
vehicles" and a third place for the new BMW X5 in the category "high-end class
off-road vehicles and SUVs" underlined the outstanding overall result achieved
by BMW. The award will be presented to BMW during the motor show Auto Mobil
International (AMI) 2007 in Lepzieg.


The all-terrain vehicle of the year award for the BMW X3 also reflects the
model's present success in terms of sales. 113,997 vehicles of this model were
sold worldwide during 2006 - an increase of around 3% compared to last year. In
Germany alone there were more than 23,000 newly registered BMW X3s, meaning
that the vehicle managed to acquire a market share of 10.3 percent in the
off-road segment.

has been named the 'Best New Sport Utility Vehicle' for 2005 by the Automobile
Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

The 2005 BMW X3 SAV was awarded the prestigious title following extensive
real-world driving tests at AJAC's annual Canadian Car of the Year Awards
competition.

Munich. After its successful introductory stage the Sports Activity Vehicle BMW
X3 is in vigorous demand on the European and American markets. Already in the
first phase of its introduction on the market during the first quarter of 2004
approximately 11,000 BMW X3 vehicles have been delivered to the customers. The
U.S.A. proved to be the best market with a sales volume of approximately 4,500
in the first quarter followed by Germany (roughly 2,500) and Italy (roughly
1,000). The introduction of the vehicle on the British market in May and on the
Japanese market (June) will further speed-up the sales.

By order of the BMW Group the four-wheel drive vehicle - manufactured by Magna
Steyr in Graz/Austria - will be produced in three shifts in order to adequately
cope with the vigorous demand. Thus the manufacturing capacity is increased by
one third, i.e. from 300 to 400 vehicles daily.

The BMW X3 is assembled by BMW's production partner Magna Steyr on an assembly
line especially built for this purpose according to BMW standards. The BMW
Group supplements and widens own capacities by this job order production,
capacities that are established in the BMW Group production network at 23
locations on four continents.

Whitby, Ontario...The highly anticipated new BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle
(SAV) has been launched into the Canadian market via Phase I of BMW Group
Canada's innovative bilingual marketing communications program.

The 'Ultimate Drives Across Canada' guidebook, the first initiative in this
phase of the marketing program, was created by Rogers Marketing Solutions, a
division of Rogers Publishing, under the guidance of Cundari Integrated
Advertising. The glove box size, full colour, glossy 16-page booklet features
driving adventure anecdotes from the west coast's Wild Pacific Trail, Gatineau
Park in Quebec, and the Niagara Escarpment. The booklet also features a
special section dedicated to xDrive, a new all-wheel drive system, introduced
in the BMW X3 SAV. The web component of the campaign was created by Blast
Radius and the media plan was developed by The Media Company.

A total of 1.1 million copies of the 'Ultimate Drives Across Canada' booklet
will be distributed via Canadian Business Magazine (November 10), Maclean's,
L'actualité, Montreal Gazette, Montreal La Presse, Ottawa Citizen, Globe and
Mail, National Post, Calgary Herald and the Vancouver Sun during the week of
November 24th.

BMW Group Canada is offering the 'Canadian Rockies Ultimate Drive' contest as
another element of the X3 Phase I marketing campaign. The vacation for two to
Alberta includes two nights stay in each of the following hotels - Fairmont
Chateau Lake Louise, Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and Fairmont Jasper Park
Lodge, with airfare supplied by WestJet. Contestants can enter by mailing in

Whitby, Ontario...BMW Group Canada announced today the availability of the
all-new BMW X3 for Model Year 2004. Offered with two engine choices, pricing is
set at $44,600 for the X3 2.5i and $49,850 for the X3 3.0i. Limited allocation
of the X3 3.0i will reach Canadian retailers in late November, with the X3 2.5i
following in the new year.

Built upon the successful theme of the BMW X5, the all-new BMW X3 continues the
tradition of a Sports Activity Vehicle with sport sedan qualities. Power is
available through BMW's renowned in-line six cylinder engines in either 2.5 or
3.0 litre guise. Mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 5 speed automatic with
Steptronic, the X3 delivers the dynamic handling characteristics that one
expects from BMW.

As is traditional with all new BMW's, groundbreaking technology is featured
prominently in the design. In the case of the X3 the new technology that is
featured is xDrive, an all-wheel drive system that allows the driving force or
torque to be distributed variably and infinitely between the front and rear
axles. Without any intervention from the driver xDrive acts proactively to
provide the best possible acceleration, traction and stability at all times and
in all conditions.

The interior of the X3 offers both comfort and functionality through a large

the X5, and comes to market to conquer the world's roads both on and off the
beaten track.

The BMW X3 will make its debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show in
September.

The BMW X3 combines the characteristic proportions of a Sports Activity Vehicle
with both classic and new BMW design characteristics. The modern design
language with interacting concave and convex surfaces gives the X3 a youthful
and fresh appearance. Its unique position within the BMW model series is
underlined by a wide range of characteristic features such as the newly
interpreted, classic "Hofmeister kink" in the rear side windows, the newly
designed double kidney grille, as well as the headlights and rear lights. The
long wheelbase with short overhangs and the sloping roof line accentuate the

Dynamic performance is ensured by BMW's 3.0 and 2.5-litre straight-six gasoline
units widely lauded for their truly outstanding refinement and performance.
Developing a maximum output of 225hp, the agile X3 3.0i is specified with a top
speed of up to 210 km/h or 130 mph in standard trim, and can reach up to 224
km/h or 139 mph with its optionally available high-speed set-up (available with
Sports Package). The X3 2.5i offers 184hp. Both models come standard with a
six-speed manual gearbox, a five-speed automatic transmission being available
as an option.

A special highlight of the BMW X3 is the newly developed intelligent xDrive
all-wheel-drive system which sets new standards in agility for all-wheel-drive
vehicles. xDrive allows infinitely adjustable and fully variable distribution
of torque front-to-rear, the system immediately recognises any need for a
change in power distribution and responds very quickly, when driving on-road
often before the wheels begin to lose their grip. As a result, the X3 is able
to feed optimum torque to the respective axle at any time during dynamic
cornering , significantly minimising both under- and oversteer in the process.

On the road xDrive therefore offers a substantial improvement in agility and
driving pleasure and, at the same time, safety. Stability management systems
such as DSC can intervene at a far later point in time than with conventional
four-wheel drive. xDrive also ensures better grip and traction on slippery or
rough terrain, transmitting power as quickly as possible to the wheels with
better grip when a wheel might start to spin and thus eventually interrupt the
flow of traction.

The versatility of the new BMW X3 is by no means limited to the wide range of
different road conditions and terrain on which this SAV demonstrates its
agility and dynamic performance. Also the interior and the wide range of
available equipment make this the ideal BMW for active, versatile
personalities. From the 'command position' - the high, characteristic seating
position in a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle - the occupants not only see the
surroundings from a pleasant and clear perspective, but also enjoy a very
modern and very spacious interior. Typical BMW elegance and aesthetics combine
with a wide range of practical details and a youthful sporty ambience
appropriate to the vehicle character. An equally broad range of both classic as
well as sporty, modern materials and colours offers unique possibilities to
personalize the interior of the new X3. In the cockpit the two circular dials
are grouped together in typical BMW style in an elegant binnacle. And right in
the middle of the instrument panel the driver
will find the optional 16:9 navigation system colour monitor, which flips up
automatically whenever required.

Lots of space is to be found behind the wide-opening and convenient rear hatch
door, plenty of room for all kinds of sports gear - such as mountain bikes -
and naturally lots of other things. Numerous storage compartments then round
off the high functionality of the X3, and for those who want to transport even
larger sports equipment, BMW's unique trailer stability control offers safer
towing of boat and other trailers. This extension of the DSC stability control
system naturally comes as standard, just like automatic HDC Hill Descent
Control for driving downhill safely even on loose or slippery surfaces.

In developing the X3, BMW also focused in particular on active and passive
safety of the highest standard. The engineering principle of BMW's Sports
Activity Vehicles - the front drive shaft extending through the oil sump -
gives the X3 a very low centre of gravity and reduces body roll in the process.
xDrive's intelligent distribution of torque helps keep the X3 very stable and
sure-footed even in fast bends, so that many critical situations do not occur
right from the outset. And should they all the same, DSC Dynamic Stability
Control will intervene to help stabilise the vehicle.

The new BMW X3 will be available in Europe and North America in early 2004.
