<strong>Richmond Hill, ON. </strong> For the first time ever in North
America, BMW M presents the new BMW M5 Touring, a high-performance
model offering a new level of utility to go with the race-bred
performance, bold design, and superlative all-day comfort that are the
hallmarks of an M5. The M Hybrid drivetrain produces 717 hp and 738
lb-ft to deliver intoxicating performance on road and track alike. And
yet, the plug-in hybrid powertrain enables almost silent and locally
emission-free driving, with a preliminary estimated range of up-to 40
kilometres on a full charge. The unique concept of the new BMW M5
Touring is reflected in both its exterior design and its interior
configuration and appointments. Prominently flared wheel arches and
side skirts and the M-specific design of the front and rear aprons
distinguish the BMW M5 Touring. Inside, the new M5 Touring has up to
1,630 litres (estimated) of flexible load-carrying capacity for
  leisure activities and trips away.</p>
<p>BMW M first introduced a Touring variant back in 1992 alongside the
second generation of the BMW M5 sedan, the E34. In 2007, the fourth
generation of the high-performance sedan also gained a BMW M5 Touring
sibling, the E61. And now the new edition means customers will be able
to choose from two variants of the BMW M5 for only the third time in
its 40-year history, and for the first time in North America.</p>
<p>The new BMW M5 Touring will make its North American debut at Pebble
Beach Automotive Week on Thursday, August 15. It will be built at
BMW Group Plant Dingolfing alongside the new BMW M5 sedan. The global
market launch of the M5 Touring will commence in the fourth quarter of 2024.</p>

<p>
<strong>Large air intake and newly designed BMW M kidney grille.</strong></p>
<p>The front end leaves no doubt about its identity as an M5. At the
centre is the newly designed BMW M kidney grille, where the “M5” badge
is displayed on the horizontal double-bar. While the centre of the
BMW M kidney grille houses the sensors for the driver assistance
systems, the lower section holds two small air intakes that ensure
optimum temperature control by efficiently channelling the onrushing
air to the radiator. <br/>Below the BMW M kidney grille is the
central lower air intake. The high-gloss black aperture in the front
apron ensures a generous supply of cooling air. It is split by a
central partition, which adds a bit of race-inspired design to the
M-specific front end. With their triangular contouring, the side air
intakes painted in body colour accentuate the wide stance of the new
BMW M5 Touring. Pronounced wheel arches and the sculptural surfaces
around the BMW M kidney grille, headlights, and air intakes create a
  striking appearance.</p>
<p>The standard Shadowline Lights with Full LED Headlights bring a
clean, modern look to the typical four-eyed face with black trim on
  the inside of their housing.</p>
<p>
<strong> </strong></p>
<p>
<strong>Athletic silhouette with elegantly stretched Touring
proportions, model-specific roof spoiler and prominently flared
    wheel arches.</strong></p>
<p>When viewed from the side, the distinctive character of the new
BMW M5 Touring is accentuated by the elegantly stretched roofline and
roof spoiler. The greenhouse tapers at the rear, creating a powerful
shoulder area strengthened by the prominent wheel arches of the new
BMW M5 Touring. The character line above the flush door handles
extends all the way to the rear lights on the Touring, lending a touch
of grace to the silhouette. Side skirts painted in body colour
complete the muscular style at the point closest to the road – an
additional, light-refracting edge strengthening the slim and athletic
overall impression. The hunkered-down body and front/rear aprons
extending low bring additional emphasis to the Touring’s imposing
proportions. The aerodynamically optimized M exterior mirror caps are
  finished in high-gloss black.</p>
<p>
<strong> </strong></p>
<p>
<strong>Broad, powerful rear end with monolithic surface treatment.</strong></p>
<p>As at the front, generously sized surfaces create a strong appearance
and assertively showcase the expressive rear end. The prominently
flared rear wheel arches, the slim rear lights extending into the
sides, and the vertical reflectors at the far outer edges of the rear
accentuate the width and powerful stature of the Touring.</p>
<p>Along with the roof spoiler, a two-section diffuser helps to optimize
the M5 Touring’s aerodynamics, increase traction, and adds a styling
element inspired by Motorsport. The diffuser’s vertical divider
references the split in the centre of the front apron. The familiar M
quad exhaust tailpipes in Black Chrome are integrated into the left
and right of the rear apron.<br/>

<p>
<strong>M alloy wheels with axle-specific dimensions.</strong></p>
<p>M double spoke alloy wheels, Style 951M, with a burnished finish
enhance the M5’s sporting presence. Their staggered dimensions – 20
inches at the front axle and 21 inches at the rear – optimize the
transfer of cornering forces to the road. Fitted with 285/40 ZR20
tires at the front and 295/35 ZR21 tires at the rear, they ensure
outstanding cornering and directional stability, as well as precise
steering feel and exceptional traction, even under hard track driving.</p>
<p>The Style 951M wheel is also available finished in Jet Black, and may
be fitted with either performance or high performance tires. Another M
double-spoke wheel, Style 952M, is available in a burnished finish and
  is fitted with performance tires.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Expressive body colours; BMW Individual special paint finishes
    available from launch.</strong></p>
<p>Customers can choose from ten expressive exterior paint shades for
their new BMW M5 Touring. These include the exclusive M variants Isle
of Man Green metallic and Marina Bay Blue metallic along with a vast
selection of BMW Individual special order paint finishes, offered from launch.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Powertrain. M TwinPower Turbo V8, fifth-generation BMW eDrive,
    and M xDrive.</strong></p>
<p>The first M5 Touring for the Canadian market arrives with an
electrified drive system. The M Hybrid powertrain, closely related to
the system that powers the M Hybrid V8 race car, unites a high-revving
V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor
integrated into the transmission. The result is an exceptionally
potent drive unit that generates both formidable performance and
enhanced efficiency, and can even provide all-electric driving.</p>
<p>The combustion engine and electric motor generate a combined maximum
output of 717 hp and peak system torque of 738 lb-ft. The intelligent
interaction between the engine and the electric motor combined with
chassis technology tuned perfectly to the drive system’s performance
characteristics demonstrate the progress achieved through racing
expertise gained over the decades by BMW Motorsport.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Perfectly orchestrated: the M Hybrid system in the BMW M5 Touring.</strong></p>
<p>A product of fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, the electric
motor integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission endows the
new BMW M5 Touring with extremely sharp power delivery. The electric
motor’s instant thrust off the line and the V8 engine’s relentless
build-up of power into the upper reaches of the rev ranges merge to
produce extraordinary performance characteristics. Add the M Hybrid
system’s similarly outstanding elasticity to the formula and the new
BMW M5 Touring achieves an exceptional level of dynamic ability.</p>
<p>The BMW M5 Touring sprints to 100 km/h from rest in an estimated
3.6 seconds and will reach 200 km/h in an estimated 11.1 seconds. The
738 lb-ft maximum system torque of the M Hybrid drive additionally
provides outstanding flexibility, which is reflected in a 80 – 120
km/h time of 3.1 seconds in fifth gear. The limited top speed of 250
  km/h is raised to 305 km/h when the optional M Driver’s Package is specified.</p>
<p>The high output of the electric motor fitted in the new
BMW M5 Touring also enables fully electric driving up to 140 km/h. The
14.8 kWh HV battery allows an estimated maximum electric range of
  up-to 40 km on a full charge.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Muscular V8 engine with high-revving character typical of M models.</strong></p>
<p>The 4.4-litre V8 under the hood of the new BMW M5 Touring combines
the high-revving character typical of BMW M engines with the latest
M TwinPower Turbo technology. Besides the pair of twin-scroll
turbochargers, the package of technology also includes High Precision
Injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing, and an improved
version of the VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing tech, which
comes with switchable rocker arms on the exhaust side, allowing gas
exchange to be interrupted on the overrun. This has the effect of
reducing the engine’s internal frictional losses, meaning that
additional braking energy can be recuperated. The cross-bank exhaust
manifold, a reinforced crankshaft drive, and upgraded turbochargers
mounted close to the exhaust manifold with adapted indirect charge air
cooling all factor in increasing the engine’s efficiency.</p>
<p>With its sustained power delivery across a wide load range, the
combustion engine in the new BMW M5 Touring generates 577 hp from
5,600 to 6,500 rpm, while peak torque stands at 553 lb-ft between
  1,800 and 5,400 rpm. The V8 has a rev limit of 7,200 rpm.</p>
<p>
<span>
<span style=""><img src="https://content.presspage.com/uploads/3243/2a3e9355-1a68-4dd3-8b1f-d8447037d1ed/P90564541_highRes_the-all-new-bmw-m5-t.jpg"/></span></span></p>
<p>
<strong>Electric motor with instantaneous power delivery and high torque.</strong></p>
<p>The M Hybrid system’s electric motor is integrated into the 8-speed
M Steptronic transmission together with its power electronics in a
weight- and space-saving design. The fifth-generation synchronous
motor responds immediately to the accelerator with instant power
delivery in the manner now familiar from electric motors. The electric
motor contributes up to 194 hp to the maximum system output and up to
  207 lb-ft to the maximum system torque.</p>
<p>Its nominal torque is boosted to an effective value of as much as
332 lb-ft at the transmission input for the motor with the help of a
pre-gearing stage patented by BMW. This innovation enables the compact
electric drive unit to generate effective propulsive power that could
normally only be achieved using a far larger motor.</p>
<p>M Sound provides the aural accompaniment to the electric motor’s
power delivery. This M-specific drive sound generates intuitive
acoustic responses to movements of the accelerator, both in
all-electric mode and when supplementing the power of the V8.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>High-voltage battery, power electronics, and Combined Charging
Unit with intelligent energy and heat management.</strong></p>
<p>Like the electric motor, the high-voltage battery in the new
BMW M5 Touring is also part of the latest, fifth generation of
BMW eDrive technology. It is installed in the vehicle’s underbody to
save space. This also results in a low centre of gravity that lends
itself to agile handling. The lithium-ion battery in the new
BMW M5 Touring boasts a high energy density, allowing it to provide
  14.8 kWh of usable energy.</p>
<p>The power electronics of the M Hybrid system ensure a seamless
cooperation between engine and electric motor at all times. As well as
providing an electric boost effect under acceleration, the electric
motor of the new BMW M5 Touring also performs a supporting role under
steady loads, helping to reduce the engine’s fuel consumption.</p>
<p>The M Hybrid system’s Combined Charging Unit supports AC charging up
to 9.6-11 kW (Market depending), and coordinates the flow of
electricity both when charging the high-voltage battery and when
supplying energy to the electric motor. It also acts as a voltage
transformer to supply the 12V electrical system. Its predictive heat
management allows the Combined Charging Unit to reduce charging times
by strategically warming or cooling the battery. The system uses data
on the outside temperature, predicted charging power, charge stroke
between the current actual value and the target value, the remaining
range, and the distance to the destination to calculate the target
temperature at which the high-voltage battery can be charged at
maximum power for the longest possible time.</p>
<p>In addition, the charging socket on the front side panel on the
left-hand side of the new BMW M5 has a sensor that measures the
temperature at the plug contacts and can therefore detect a possible
instance of overheating at an early stage.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Integrated cooling system, model-specific engine and
    transmission mounts.</strong></p>
<p>The integrated cooling system in the new BMW M5 Touring has been
adapted to the demands of both everyday use and track driving. Large
air intakes in the front ensure the inflow of cool air is maintained
as required at all times. Generously sized heat exchangers and an
integrated system for controlling the temperature of the combustion
engine, the transmission including electric motor, and the
high-voltage battery keep operating temperatures consistently at an
  optimum level.</p>
<p>An M5-specific, extremely rigid powertrain mounting makes an
additional contribution to the performance-focused driving properties
of the Touring. It is also a factor in the direct transmission of the
car’s power to the road, its instant response and its precision when
  turning into corners.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, Launch
    Control, and Boost Control.</strong></p>
<p>The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic channels the
power generated by the combustion engine as well as drive torque from
the integrated electric motor as required to enhance either
efficiency, comfort, or performance. The transmission’s shift
characteristics can be varied via the Drivelogic settings selectable
using the M Setup menu. Three clearly distinguishable stages can be
selected in both automated and manual mode – ranging from
  comfort-focused to extremely dynamic.</p>
<p>A new Boost Control function enables a nearly instantaneous burst of
speed when travelling between 30 and 150 km/h. Pulling on the
left-hand shift paddle for more than one second prompts all the
powertrain and chassis systems to be switched to their sportiest
setting. An alert on the information display indicates that this
function has been initiated. When the driver pushes down hard on the
accelerator, the M5 responds with immediate and truly ferocious acceleration.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Five operating modes allow drivers to choose the optimum setup
    at all times.</strong></p>
<p>The interaction between the combustion engine and electric motor in
the BMW M5 Touring can be adjusted by selecting specific operating
modes for the M Hybrid system. The driver can call up the relevant
menu using the M HYBRID button on the control panel in the centre
console and access it on the control display.</p>
<p>The default setting HYBRID gives the driver access to the full system
output of the combustion engine and electric motor in tandem. The
amount each drive source contributes to the performance experience
depends on the drive configuration selected from the M Setup menu. In
the Comfort setting, the electric motor is deployed more often,
optimizing the efficiency of the new BMW M5 Touring. If the battery is
at a very low state of charge, the generator function raises the
engine’s load point to feed additional power into the high-voltage
battery, and full system output developed by the electric motor and
combustion engine is still available. In the drive system’s Sport and
Sport Plus modes, the combustion engine is always engaged.</p>
<p>The ELECTRIC operating mode is for locally emission-free driving. In
this mode, the V8 engine is only engaged if the driver pushes the
accelerator into kickdown or switches to the transmission’s manual
mode using the paddle shifters. Choosing the eCONTROL setting allows
the charge of the high-voltage battery to be maintained at a constant
level during a journey or increased by means of energy recuperation or
by deliberately raising the combustion engine’s load points. In this
way, battery capacity can be saved for pure-electric driving in urban
areas later in the journey, for example.</p>
<p>M Drive Professional includes DYNAMIC and DYNAMIC PLUS modes. These
ensure the combustion engine and electric motor are both active and
that the cooling system is conditioned for track driving. In DYNAMIC
mode, the full system output is primed to deliver balanced, sustained
high performance on the track. And DYNAMIC PLUS mode delivers the M
Hybrid system’s full system power for a brief period for use on a
  circuit, for example.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Precise distribution of power with M xDrive and Active
  M Differential.<br/></strong>The M Hybrid drive system’s power is
channelled to the road via the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive
system. Its electronically controlled multi-plate clutch ensures fully
variable distribution of power between the front and rear wheels. The
latest version of the transfer case is more efficient, weighs less,
and brings improvements in oil-level control and cooling. The transfer
case’s torque capacity has also been increased to allow it to work in
tandem with the powerful drive system in the new BMW M5 Touring.</p>
<p>The M xDrive system’s responses can also be adjusted via the M Setup
menu. As well as the default 4WD setting, drivers can also choose
  4WD Sport or 2WD mode. In 4WD Sport mode, the all-wheel-drive system’s
rear-biased setup is more pronounced. To engage it, drivers will first
need to switch to M Dynamic Mode or deactivate the DSC (Dynamic
Stability Control) system. And only when DSC has been fully
deactivated can 2WD mode be selected. Sending drive exclusively to the
rear wheels without interventions from the DSC system will appeal to
experienced drivers who prefer an unfiltered performance experience,
e.g. when executing drift maneuvers on the track.</p>
<p>Working together with the M xDrive system is an electronically
controlled differential lock in the rear axle of the new BMW M5
Touring, which further enhances traction, agility, and directional
stability. Like the all-wheel-drive system, the Active M Differential
is tailored specially to the performance characteristics of the M
Hybrid drive system. It provides fully variable distribution of drive
between the left and right rear wheels, adjusted to the situation at
hand. The Active M Differential also helps to enhance dynamic
cornering. Shifting power to the wheel on the outside of the corner
mitigates understeer without the need for any brake inputs. In order
to regulate power transfer as precisely as possible, both the M xDrive
all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential are networked
with the central transverse dynamics management of the new BMW M5 Touring.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Chassis and driving experience.</strong></p>
<p>The dual nature of the new BMW M5 Touring enables it to deliver an
enthralling driving experience on the track as well as in everyday use
and on longer journeys. Its dynamic performance qualities set new
standards. Key contributors here include a long wheelbase, wide
tracks, a low centre of gravity and a nearly perfect 50:50 weight
distribution, as well as a body with improved rigidity and enhanced
aerodynamics, and chassis technology that has been carefully tuned for
  the M Hybrid drive system.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Extremely stiff body structure with M-specific bracing elements.</strong></p>
<p>An extensive package of precisely interlinked M-specific bracing
elements focused on enhancing driving dynamics increases the
longitudinal and torsional stiffness of the body structure. At the
front of the new BMW M5 Touring, a shear panel that connects the
spring strut towers with the bulkhead is used, along with
model-specific tower-to-front end struts. Further strengthening
elements can be found in the centre and rear sections of the engine compartment.</p>
<p>At the back, the new BMW M5 Touring is fitted with model-specific
underfloor bracing elements, including a cross-bar and a shear panel,
as well as further stiffening elements for the luggage compartment.
Furthermore, the mountings connecting the chassis to the body and the
steering to the front axle subframe also have exceptional torsional rigidity.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Advanced chassis technology tuned for dynamic excitement and
    superb long-distance comfort.</strong></p>
<p>The new BMW M5 Touring has exceptional dynamic handling capabilities
thanks to the model-specific kinematic and elastokinematic properties
of its sophisticated chassis technology. The double-wishbone front
axle optimizes longitudinal and lateral rigidity, while the selective
use of aluminum components lowers the weight of the unsprung mass.
Newly designed wheel carriers, axle kinematics with large castor and
kingpin angles, a lowered roll centre, and model-specific elastomer
bearings produce an outstanding combination of compelling dynamic
  potency and finely balanced comfort.</p>
<p>The five-link rear axle also comes in an M-specific design. Unsprung
mass has been reduced by deploying an innovative sheet-steel
construction for its links, together with aluminum components. The
Touring’s longitudinal and transverse dynamics both benefit from new
toe links, camber links, and trailing arms, while precise wheel
guidance enhances straight-line poise, load-change characteristics,
directional stability, and steering behaviour. Stiffer mountings and
model-specific elastokinematics have a positive effect on both agility
  and long-distance comfort.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>M Servotronic steering and Integral Active Steering as standard.</strong></p>
<p>The M Servotronic steering has been upgraded and brings together
speed-sensitive power assistance and a variable steering ratio in the
new BMW M5 Touring. This results in both accurate turn-in when
powering through bends and effortless maneuvering at low speeds. The
steering’s rigid bolted connection to the front axle subframe ensures
optimal feedback from the road and a high degree of directional
accuracy. The M Setup menu gives drivers the choice of a
comfort-focused setting for the steering assistance or one optimized
  for sporty driving.</p>
<p>The new BMW M5 Touring is also equipped as standard with Integral
Active 4-Wheel Steering, which allows the rear wheels to be turned to
an angle of up to 1.5° when steering. Turning them in the opposite
direction to the front wheels at low speeds reduces the Touring’s
turning circle. And turning them in the same direction at higher
speeds improves both directional stability and cornering dynamics.
Plus, in highly dynamic driving situations the system prompts the
chassis control tech to make steering inputs to optimize directional
  stability and agility.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.</strong></p>
<p>The new BMW M5 Touring also comes standard with Adaptive M
suspension. Its electronically controlled dampers optimize road
contact in all driving situations, reduce the body’s tendency to roll
through higher-speed corners, and enhance driving comfort. The
Adaptive M suspension improves the suppression of body vibrations
regardless of vehicle speed, as the highest damping forces are only
ever triggered when required and only for a few milliseconds. As a
result, the suspension absorbs large bumps with a smoothness that
keeps the body perfectly connected to the road at all times. Adjusting
the damper forces as the situation demands also improves traction when
pulling away and stopping power when braking sharply.</p>
<p>The basic shock absorber characteristics can be adjusted via the M
Setup menu. The Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus modes provide drivers
with a choice of three settings, ranging from very comfortable to a
performance-focused setup. The responses of the Integral Active
4-Wheel Steering system are adjusted together with the shock absorbers.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Integrated braking system with individually selectable
settings fitted as standard; M Carbon ceramic brakes optional.</strong></p>
<p>The integrated braking system in the BMW M5 Touring brings together
the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions
within a single module. An electric actuator is used to help generate
  the required brake pressure.</p>
<p>Braking is handled by the standard M Compound brakes or optional M
Carbon ceramic brakes. Both have six-piston fixed-calliper brakes at
the front axle and single-piston floating-calliper brakes at the rear.
The M Compound discs measure 410 mm at the front and 398 mm at the
rear, and the calipers are painted blue as standard or red or black as
an option. The M Carbon ceramic brakes bring reduced weight (they are
approximately 25 kg lighter), stronger braking power, a greater
ability to withstand fade, further enhanced thermal stability, and
high resistance to wear. Other features of the M Carbon brakes are the
calipers painted in Gold metallic and larger 420 mm discs at the front.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Intelligent networking for enhanced dynamics, agility and precision.</strong></p>
<p>The introduction of the integrated braking system on the new BMW M5
Touring is accompanied by further updates for the DSC (Dynamic
Stability Control) functions. As the braking control function is also
integrated into the system’s central module, corrective inputs are now
applied with greater precision. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) and
Cornering Brake Control (CBC) are both enhanced by the integrated
braking system, likewise the stability control system for preventing
oversteer and understeer, and the Automatic Differential Brake
(ADB-X), Brake Assist, Dry Braking function, Start-Off Assistant and
  Automatic Hold functions.</p>
<p>The near-actuator wheel slip limitation tech fitted in the new BMW M5
Touring enables highly sensitive acceleration control on wet,
snow-covered, or icy surfaces or on roads with inconsistent grip
levels. The integration of this traction control system into the
engine management eliminates the long signal paths to the DSC control
unit. This allows corrective inputs to be applied up to ten times
faster than in conventional systems. Because near-actuator wheel slip
limitation responds so quickly to any loss of traction, especially
when accelerating hard or taking corners at speed, the DSC system has
to intervene far less frequently with selective applications of the
brakes at individual wheels to maintain composed and assured handling.</p>
<p>This function is networked with the central transverse dynamics
management, as are Performance Control, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive
system, the Active M Differential and the steering’s control systems.
This ensures that all the functions act in a coordinated manner to
produce a well-resolved driving experience worthy of the M badge in
  all situations.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Driver assistance systems with highly configurable functionality.</strong></p>
<p>The new BMW M5 Touring is available either as standard or optionally
with a broad selection of driver assistance systems. The functionality
of these systems has also been improved thanks to the integrated
braking system and networked transverse dynamics management.</p>
<p>The standard-fitted systems include Forward Collision Mitigation,
Lane Keeping Assistant and Speed Limit Info, along with the Driving
Assistant including Active Blind Spot Detection and Speed Limit
Assistant. The Parking Assistant, now standard, incorporates features
such as the Backup Assistant, Active Park Distance Control, and
  Lateral Parking Assistant.</p>
<p>On the options list is the Advanced Driver Assistance Package, which
permits the Lane Keep Assistant with Side Collision Protection and
Distance Control to be used when travelling at highway speeds. At
lower speeds up to 60 km/h, the Traffic Jam Assistant can provide
attentive, unlimited hands-free driving to ease the strain of
especially dense traffic situations on limited access highways.</p>
<p>The functions of the driver assistance system can be configured to
personal preference using the M Mode button on the centre console. In
the Sport setting, all interventions in the car’s braking and steering
systems are suspended, with the exception of those triggered by the
Forward Collision Mitigation system and the Evasion Assistant.
Instead, only warning alerts flagging up speed limits or overtaking
restrictions, for example, are given. With standard equipment M Drive
Professional, Track mode – conceived for use strictly on race tracks –
can be selected. Here, all the advanced driver assistance systems are
  fully deactivated.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Interior design and equipment.</strong></p>
<p>A cockpit designed to deliver a focused performance experience and
the M-specific operating concept for adapting the vehicle setup to
personal preferences come together in an exclusive, premium ambience
featuring modern design elements, high-quality materials, and
luxurious equipment features. Added to this is the versatile interior
space with which the BMW M5 Touring takes sports-car flair into a

<strong>M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles and M buttons.</strong></p>
<p>With its multifunction buttons, two programmable M buttons, and
gearshift paddles for sequential interventions in the gear selection
process, the latest generation of M leather steering wheel has an
authentic racing-car feel about it. Sporting a three-spoke design, it
comes with a red centre marker in the 12-o’clock position, a
flat-bottomed rim, and stitching in BMW M tricolour. The horizontal
spokes of the new steering wheel have narrow cut-outs and
multifunction buttons. Steering wheel heating is standard.</p>
<p>The programmable M buttons above the horizontal spokes are
trapezoidal in shape, taking their cue from the contours of the
M-specific displays. They are finished in M Red metallic and are
illuminated at night. The gearshift paddles on the steering wheel also
have a new design. Their surfaces are finished in high-gloss black,
while the cut-out plus and minus symbols have red contour lines. The
left-hand paddle is marked BOOST with the standard equipped M Drive
  Professional in Canada.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>M-specific control panel and individual vehicle configurations.</strong></p>
<p>The control panel on the centre console houses the red start/stop
button, the newly designed gear selector toggle, the BMW iDrive
Controller, the roller control for the audio, and the M-specific
buttons for the setup options. The iDrive Controller has an M logo
outline design and, like the high-gloss black gear selector toggle and
the audio system’s roller, it is accented in Dark Silver.</p>
<p>The control panel also has dedicated buttons for selecting the DSC
system settings, the M Hybrid drive system’s operating mode, the M
Mode for the displays and driver assistance systems, and the settings
for the overall setup of the new M5 Touring. Pressing the Setup button
calls up the M Setup menu in the control display. Drivers can then use
touch control to configure their desired settings for the drive
system, transmission, suspension, steering, braking system and M
xDrive, as well as for the intensity of energy recuperation.</p>

<strong>M Multifunction seats in  Merino leather enhance support and
    comfort over longer journeys.</strong></p>
<p>Customers can choose to outfit the standard M Multifunction Seats in
one of four shades of Merino Leather; Black, Silverstone/Black
  bi-colour, Red/Black bi-colour, and Kyalami Orange/Black bi-colour.</p>
<p>Beginning in the Spring of 2025, customers will be able to specify
BMW Individual Merino leather trim in Black/Dark Violet bi-colour and
Taupe Grey/Deep Lagoon bi-colour. The unique finish creates a striking
effect for the head and shoulder areas of the M Multifunction Seats
and imparts an exclusive and technical aura to the interior with
surfaces that vary their appearance according to the prevailing light.
This is made possible by a refinement process called High Definition
Design (HDD), and BMW is the first carmaker to use this process in one
of its products. HDD creates a unique, three-dimensional ornamentation
in the leather, featuring clear contours and seamless transitions
between areas higher up in the interior and those lower down.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Model-specific interior lighting, BMW Interaction Bar and
    standard ambient lighting.</strong></p>
<p>Alongside the lighting for the smartphone tray, centre armrest and
handle recess in the door panel trim, the interior lighting also
comprises a Welcome Animation with light signals in the BMW M
tricolour. Also helping to create the exclusive on-board ambience is
the BMW Interaction Bar spanning the instrument panel into the front
door panel trim. Integrated into the instrument panel with a
crystalline appearance, this combined light-bar/toolbar includes
control surfaces for the ventilation settings, rear window heating,
  and hazard warning lights.</p>
<p>The standard ambient lighting provides atmospheric illumination for
the footwells, the door pockets, the cup holders, the interior trim
elements, the audio system’s midrange speakers integrated into the
door panel trim, and the backs of the front seats. The colours used
for the light effects vary according to the M Mode selected. In Track
mode, the lighting is fully switched off.</p>
<p>The new BMW M5 Touring comes standard with interior trim elements in
Aluminum Rhombicle. Options include High Gloss Carbon Fibre with
Silver Threads and High Gloss Dark Oak Fine-Wood interior trims. All
the interior trim variants are accented in Dark Silver.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Extensive standard equipment, including the Sky Lounge
    Panoramic Roof.</strong></p>
<p>The premium ambiance of the new BMW M5 Touring is underlined by the
array of luxurious equipment features fitted as standard to enhance
comfort and diving pleasure. For example, a Bowers & Wilkins
Surround Sound System with 18 speakers and 655-watts of crystal clear
power. Illuminated metal covers for the door-mounted speakers
underscore the exclusive character of the sound system.</p>
<p>The standard Sky Lounge Panoramic Roof functions as a structural
module and extends in a single section from just behind the windscreen
far to the rear of the vehicle. This floods the interior with light
and gives the exterior an even more elegant appearance that is neatly
set off by roof trim strips in high-gloss black. An electrically
operated roller blind is standard to provide interior shading.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Modern functionality for everyday use, leisure, and longer journeys.</strong></p>

with touch control and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, it
encompasses the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, the
iDrive Controller on the centre console, and the BMW Head-Up Display,
which projects relevant driving information directly into the driver’s
field of vision on the windscreen, also with M-specific graphics.</p>
<p>The new generation of BMW iDrive also expands the repertoire
abilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. For example,
naturally spoken instructions can now be used in the new BMW M5
Touring to adjust the seat position, start Automatic Park Assistant,
  or activate M Sound.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>M-specific readouts and graphics on the BMW Curved Display.</strong></p>
<p>Inside the cockpit of the new BMW M5 Touring, the BMW Curved Display
impresses with modern graphics, dynamic light effects, and expressive
colour worlds. The fully digital screen grouping is made up of a
  12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display.</p>
<p>Within the information display directly in front of the driver, the
vehicle speed is shown on the left, both as a number and as a digital
scale, along with further information such as the fuel level and the
status of the driver assistance systems. The right-hand section
indicates engine speed, current gear, the transmission’s Drivelogic
setting, as well as the charge level of the high-voltage battery and
the setup selected using the M button on the steering wheel. The
familiar M Shift Lights appear at the top of the information display,
while an indicator bar along the lower edge notifies the driver of the
status of the driving stability systems, M xDrive, and traction
  control, among other things.</p>
<p>The fully digital screen grouping provides a clear overview of the
various menu options in the form of widgets on the control display’s
home screen, which can be arranged to suit personal preferences. A
number of special widgets are also available in the new BMW M5 Touring
containing information on the current vehicle setup, as well as tire
pressure and temperature. Users can return to the home screen from any
of the submenus with a tap of the finger on the home icon at the lower

<strong>Video streaming and AirConsole games on the control display.</strong></p>
<p>BMW Operating System 8.5 offers a wide range of digital content for
information and entertainment, shorter function update cycles, and
improved accessibility to a host of specific online services.</p>
<p>Passing the time while waiting for the vehicle to recharge or be
refuelled, for example, is in-car gaming via the AirConsole platform.
The driver and passengers can play casual games in single-player or
multi-player mode when the car is stationary. They only need their
smartphone, which will serve as a controller, and the gaming
experience on the BMW Curved Display is ready to go. The continuously
growing portfolio of playable titles includes racing, sports, and quiz games.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>Optimal connectivity: Personal eSIM, BMW ID, My BMW App, 5G
mobile communications and Remote Software Upgrades.</strong></p>
<p>Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Touring also includes
optimized smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.</p>
<p>Personalising the user experience with the BMW ID is very
straightforward in the new BMW M5 Touring. All that’s required is an
initial sign-in from the customer inside the car using a smartphone
and a QR code. Their personal profile is then imported and
synchronizable settings are loaded. The vehicle is also added to the

<p>The My BMW App provides information on the vehicle’s status, such as
its remaining range and any service and maintenance requirements. It
also enables remote use of functions such as locating the vehicle,
locking/unlocking the doors or monitoring the car’s immediate vicinity
and interior with Remote View. The My BMW App can also be used to
  control charging processes.</p>
<p>A 5G-compatible antenna system optimizes reception for making
telephone calls and to enable the data transfer required for in-car
gaming and other online-based services. Up to ten devices can connect
to the internet at any one time via a mobile hotspot.</p>
<p>The Remote Software Upgrades function keeps the new BMW M5 Touring
right up to date with the latest software at all times. Upgrades may
include free quality improvements, updates or even additional features
(availability depends on country, vehicle model, equipment and vehicle
status). Plus, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store allows customers to test
selected functions free of charge for a pre-defined time, after which
they can add them from the Store for a specific period.</p>
<p>This optimized connectivity and innovative digital technology also
underpin the new customer service Proactive Care. Foremost is its
ability to recognize the vehicle’s service requirements using
artificial intelligence and proactively offer the customer solutions,
which are then actioned via the most appropriate channel in each case,
  depending on urgency.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>
<strong>BMW Digital Key Plus, M-specific welcome scenarios.</strong></p>
<p>The My BMW App can also be used to set up the BMW Digital Key Plus,

<strong>Richmond Hill, ON. </strong> The prototypes are carefully
disguised, but the camouflage cannot completely conceal their
character as elite high-performance vehicles. The upcoming
high-performance sedan from BMW M is completing its testing on public
roads, BMW proving grounds, and racetracks around the world.</p>
<p>But this time around, the story does not end with the sedan. Canadian
fans of the M brand have even more to look forward to. Enthusiasts
across the country have made their voices heard, and their wish has
been granted. Today, BMW M and BMW Group Canada have officially
confirmed that the BMW M5 Touring will be available to customers in
Canada for the very first time.</p>
<p>The announcement follows a campaign by BMW that asked the Canadian
public and enthusiasts to make their voices heard in support of
bringing the M5 Touring to Canada, leading to 7,200 petitions
submitted, and record-high engagement on BMW Canada’s consumer website
and official social channels (Website: (<a href="https://www.bmw.ca/en/topics/details/bmw-m5-touring.html">https://www.bmw.ca/en/topics/details/bmw-m5-touring.html</a>),
  Instagram: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bmwcanada/">https://www.instagram.com/bmwcanada/</a>).</p>

<p>The first BMW M5 Touring, based on the second generation (E34) M5
  sedan, was launched in 1992. With a Motorsport-derived 3.8-liter
inline-6 and a supremely capable chassis, it delivered an immensely
satisfying driving experience, long distance comfort, and of course,
impressive storage space. In 2007, BMW M added a Touring variant to
the fourth generation (E60) M5. That version featured a high-revving
5-liter V10 paired with a 7-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox, making it
equally as proficient on a racetrack as on a cross-country journey
with four adults and their luggage.</p>
<p>Like the future BMW M5 Sedan, the next M5 Touring will feature an M
Hybrid drivetrain closely related to the one found in the BMW M Hybrid
V8 GTP race car. Its M-typical performance characteristics along with
precisely tuned chassis technology facilitate driving dynamics and
agility at a level unique in its class. With the introduction of the
new M5, BMW M is continuing its path to electrification.</p>
<p>For almost 40 years, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for driving
dynamics, agility, and precision in the high-performance sedan
segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from motorsport,
and pioneering innovations in the areas of drive, suspension,
aerodynamics, and lightweight construction have shaped the history of
the BMW M5. Engines with six, eight, and ten cylinders, M TwinPower
Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics, and M xDrive
four-wheel drive are just some of the technological milestones with
which the M5 has consistently redefined top performance in a sedan
that is unconditionally suitable for everyday use. The seventh
generation of the BMW M5 continues this progress – with further
innovations for an even more intense performance experience.</p>
<p>Testing of the first prototypes of the new BMW M5 Touring is already
underway, in urban traffic, on mountain roads and autobahns around
Munich, at the BMW M headquarters in Garching, and in the United
States. Soon, engineers will head to the Nürburgring's Nordschleife
where the integration of the drive and suspension systems will be
carried out with the aim of ensuring the ideal balance of sporting
performance on the racetrack and superior ride comfort in everyday
  driving and over long distances.</p>

<strong>Richmond Hill, ON. </strong> BMW Canada is asking Canadians a
  very simple question: "Should we?”</p>
<p>Speculation around the availability of the BMW M5 Touring across
North America has been a popular topic amongst BMW fans, and
especially of interest to BMW M and Touring enthusiasts in recent
months. BMW Canada has taken notice of this.</p>
<p>Now, through a recently launched campaign, BMW Canada is soliciting
feedback from Canadians related to their affection for the BMW M5
Touring and encouraging them to support bringing the vehicle to the
Canadian market for the very first time.</p>
<p>Canadians can visit the <em>
<a href="https://www.bmw.ca/en/topics/details/bmw-m5-touring.html" target="_blank"><strong>Leave Your Mark</strong></a></em>
landing page to ensure their voice is heard. Additionally, BMW Canada
encourages Canadians to follow the <em>
<strong>
<a href="https://www.instagram.com/bmwcanada/?hl=en" target="_blank">BMW Canada</a></strong></em> Instagram account,
as well as engage with and share campaign creative in order to gauge
  potential customer interest.</p>
<p>“We’ve received questions from our customers and seen the discussions
about the M5 Touring online and wanted to create a platform to gather
consumer sentiment and feedback. We’re encouraging Canadians to visit
the Leave Your Mark campaign page and share whether they think BMW
Canada should bring the vehicle to the Canadian market,” said Jonathan
Thomson, Director of Brand Management at BMW Group Canada.</p>
<p>For almost 40 years, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for driving
dynamics, agility and precision in the high-performance sedan and
touring segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from
racing and pioneering innovations in the areas of powertrain,
suspension, chassis tuning and aerodynamics have shaped the history of
  the M5 and BMW as a whole.</p>
<p>While the M5 Sedan has long been succesful in Canada, the Touring
version of the vehicle has never been retailed in Canada.</p>

<strong>Munich.</strong> With a brace of victories in the “Best Cars”
competition, BMW has backed up its successful end to 2023 with a
similarly fruitful beginning to 2024. The BMW 2 Series Coupé wrapped
up class victory in the compact segment for the third time in
succession, while the BMW X1 led the way in the “compact SUV”
category. The “Best Cars” award – voted on by readers of German
motoring magazine “auto, motor und sport” and in its 48th edition this
year – is one of the most prestigious in the European automotive
industry. Almost 100,000 respondents took part in the survey,
selecting one overall winner and one “imported car” champion from a
field of 455 models across 13 vehicle categories.</p>
<p>The start of 2024 was also marked by class victory for the new BMW 5
Series Sedan in the “Large Car” category of the “Women's Worldwide Car
of the Year” award. 75 female automotive journalists from 52 countries
picked out their favourites from a total of 62 vehicles in five
categories. Intended to showcase the influence of women in the
automotive industry and presented for the 14th time this year, this
prize takes into account factors such as safety, quality, price,
design, ride comfort, everyday usability and environmental impact. The
new BMW 5 Series Sedan won over the jury members with its electrified
drive system line-up (including the fully electric BMW i5), as well as
its spaciousness, advanced technology and now fully vegan interior.</p>
<p>This successful beginning to the year saw BMW building on its run of
success in a large number of awards in 2023. Models from the premium
brand’s current range claimed numerous prizes in both its home market
of Germany and its most important sales regions internationally. The
winners stretched across all the relevant categories, with compact
models, luxury vehicles and high-performance sports cars from BMW M
GmbH all making waves. As well as vehicles powered by combustion
engines, the readers and juries also recognised a strikingly high
number of representatives from BMW’s constantly expanding electric
  mobility range.</p>
<p>“We’re very proud that our various BMW vehicles have won awards in so
many national and international competitions. This also shows that we
have attractive models in all segments that excite people,” says
Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Customer,
Brands, Sales. “The response to our models with all-electric drive
systems is particularly pleasing. This ties in with the strong demand
from customers and supports the BMW Group’s commitment to ramping up
  electric mobility in all areas.”</p>
<p>
<strong>Newcomer to the ranks of high-performance models and a fully
electric Sports Activity Vehicle both win a “Golden Steering Wheel”.</strong></p>
<p>The “Golden Steering Wheel” presented by German publications “Auto
Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag” is one of the most prestigious
distinctions in the European car industry. BMW took two of these
coveted trophies back to Munich in 2023. The BMW M3 Competition
Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 –
  10.1 l/100 km [27.2 – 28.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions,
combined: 235 – 229 g/km in the WLTP cycle) ranked first in the
“sports cars” category and the fully electric BMW iX1 topped the
  “compact class”.</p>
<p>Both models added a string of other international awards to their
collections over the course of 2023. For example, the first ever
BMW M3 Touring – which combines the dynamic prowess of a
high-performance car with impressive levels of practicality – was
elected sports car of the year in the category for vehicles costing up
to 120,000 euros by readers of “Auto Bild Sportscars” magazine. And
acclaimed British TV programme “Top Gear” honoured the BMW M GmbH
newcomer with the title “All The Car You'll Ever Need” in its “Car of
  the Year” awards.</p>
<p>The BMW iX1 collected a trio of awards in China, including
“All-Electric Premium SUV of the Year”. It also won the French
“Automobile Award 2023” in the “Green Tech” category and the “autonis
Award” bestowed by readers of “auto, motor und sport” to the year’s
  most attractive new design.</p>
<p>
<strong>Fully electric BMW i5 enjoys immediate success around the world.</strong></p>
<p>The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW i5 also claimed an “autonis”
prize. Now also available with a fully electric drive system for the
first time, the new edition of the world’s most successful business
sedan was also named “Car of the Year” by Portuguese magazine
“Frontline”. The BMW i5 was also presented with equivalent awards in
Norway and Denmark, both particularly important markets for electric
vehicles. Norwegian daily “Dagbladet” teamed up with online portals
“DinSide” and “Elbi24” to celebrate the BMW i5. While in Denmark, the
i5 fought off competition from six other models to gain the most votes
for “Car of the Year” in a final round made up exclusively of fully
electric models. The jury of 20 Danish motoring journalists chose the
BMW i5 as their winner by a large margin.</p>
<p>Chinese publication “Auto World” crowned the BMW i5 as “Most
Anticipated Premium Executive Sedan of the Year”, and the fully
electric business sedan also collected three awards in Great Britain:
“The Car Expert” put the BMW i5 in top spot in its “Best Large Car
Award”, it was named “Premium Car of the Year” in the “2024
Electrifying.com Awards” and the “Comfortable Cruiser” topped its
class in Carwow’s “Car of the Year Awards 2024”.</p>
<p>The awards underscore the ability of the new BMW i5 Sedan to win
people over with numerous different qualities: from character-rich
design, a unique balance between sportiness and comfort, innovative
equipment features and progressive digital services to a drive system
whose power is matched by its capability over long distances. And it
also uses latest-generation BMW eDrive technology to transfer the
brand’s signature dynamic ability to the road with zero local
emissions. In addition, adaptive recuperation and an intelligent
combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the
interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help to give the BMW
i5 eDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined:
  18.9 – 15.9 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) a range of 498 –
  582 kilometres (309 – 362 miles) in the WLTP cycle.</p>
<p>
<strong>BMW’s electric mobility offensive is recognised with awards.</strong></p>
<p>The BMW brand’s fully electric model line-up as a whole enjoyed a
successful year worldwide in 2023. As well as the BMW iX1 and BMW i5,
this was particularly true of the BMW i7 and BMW i4. In Great Britain
alone, these two models were both among the winners in seven awards.
Both won the “Auto Express New Car Award” in their respective vehicle
classes. The BMW i4 also claimed the “Pocket-lint Award” and “Business
Car Award”, and the BMW i7 celebrated success in both the “What Car?
Electric Car Awards” and the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”. The
fully electric luxury sedan racked up five prizes in China, too,
including the “Car of the Year” distinction from leading online
  magazine “sohu.com”.</p>
<p>There was also much to celebrate in France and the USA, where the BMW
i7 was given the “Best Overall and Best Value” rating from “Money”
magazine and praised by “wards auto” magazine for its standout luxury
ambience and digital user experience with BMW Theatre Screen in the
rear compartment. Renowned US magazine “car and driver” named both the
  BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/
100 km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW i4 eDrive40 M50 (electric power
  consumption, combined: 19.1 – 16.1 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle)
among the “Best 10” of 2023.</p>
<p>
<strong>Top marks and distinctions for the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4
Series ranges, the BMW M2 and the BMW X3.</strong></p>
<p>BMW set the seal on a successful year in Germany with a two-pronged
triumph. The BMW 3 Series and BMW X3 closed out 2023 with class
victory in the coveted “Auto Trophy”. The BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3
Series Touring, for example, took clear victories in the hotly
contested midsize segment of the readers’ survey conducted by German
title “Auto Zeitung”, racking up 19.0 per cent of the vote. This was
the seventh class win in a row for the 3 Series. Meanwhile, the rugged
aura, interior spaciousness and commitment to electrification of the
BMW X3 helped it account for 15.3 per cent of the votes cast and
therefore the highest points total in the high-volume vehicle segment
  of “SUVs costing 30,000 – 60,000 euros”.</p>
<p>The BMW 3 Series was a particularly prolific award-winner in Great
Britain. In the “Business Car Awards”, the 3 Series won the “Best
Premium Car” prize, and it also gained entry to the “Hall of Fame” of
“Fleet News” magazine as the “Most Reliable Company Car”. The BMW 3
Series won twice in the “What Car? Used Car Awards”, topping both the
“Used Executive Car” category and overall “Used Car of the Year”. And
then there was the “Best Used Hybrid Executive Car” distinction for
  the BMW 330e Sedan (fuel consumption, combined: 1.9 – 1.4 l/100 km
  [148.7 – 201.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined 20.1 –
  18.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions, combined: 43 – 32 g/km in
the WLTP cycle). The plug-in hybrid model also tasted success in the
USA, where “Money” magazine described it as “Best for Handling”.</p>
<p>Adding to the wave of success enjoyed by the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 4
Series – with its standout sporting appeal – also enriched the brand’s
glittering international reputation in the premium midsize segment.
The best example of this came in the BMW 4 Series Coupé and BMW 4
Series Convertible’s showing in the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”
in Great Britain. The closed-roof two-door won the “Coupe of the Year”
for the third year in succession in 2023. And this year its open-top
sister model also won the “Convertible of the Year” award.</p>
<p>Two other British awards were claimed by the BMW M2. It was voted
“Best Performance Car” in “The Car Expert Awards”, and the compact
high-performance sports car also took the title of “Performance Car of
the Year” in the “Auto Express New Car Awards”.</p>

boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment
it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold
around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven
not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive
models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the
BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models
is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW
continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By
offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a
front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated
its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will
secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the
future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either
transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as
well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe
  with electrified all-wheel drive.</p>
<p>
  <span>
<strong>The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.</strong></span>
  <span>
<br /></span>BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came
with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor
Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately
reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists
took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This
very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away
from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made
for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new
champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers
from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.</p>
<p>Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes
typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of
this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM)
system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the
earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of
the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed
either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC).
The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution
ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely
  dynamic cornering.</p>
<p>The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW
rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the
all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to
the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains
the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque
steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the
latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of
power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner,
further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.</p>
<p>

    <strong>BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.</strong></span>
  <br />The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i
“Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent
between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed
differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential
were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the
front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability.
This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was
offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and
  including the E46 series).</p>
<p>
  <strong>1991: BMW 525iX.</strong>
<br />Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the
BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now
electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured
multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear
power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with
driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate
clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by
electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system
monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the
Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about
brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.</p>
<p>From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a
class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and
precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics
even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In
the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered
in both Sedan and touring versions.</p>
<p>
  <span>
<strong>1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.</strong></span>
<br />In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle
concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first
Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving
dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the
time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in
this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of
38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic
control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X
(Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured
the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle
challenging conditions off the beaten track.</p>
<p>In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept,
there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at
BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s
all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation
  of the BMW 3 Series.</p>
<p>
  <span>
<strong>2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.</strong></span>
<br />Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up
the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle
segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered
even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only
premium model in its class for years to come.</p>
<p>The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was
introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon
extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely
fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive
worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to
continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving
situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the
electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability
Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position
and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s
first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike
conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least
one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of
oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively
corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.</p>
<p>In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on
the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring
models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced
in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold
worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its
second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.</p>
<p>
<strong>2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid
drive</strong>. <br />With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly
established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to
present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical
dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For
the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined
with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power
split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled
agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on
overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further
perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile,
in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its
range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive
system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6
M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the
  all-wheel-drive market.</p>
<p>2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many
years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of
its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also
combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes
the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing
engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and
taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.</p>
<p>
<strong>BMW xDrive also available for other model series.</strong>
<br />The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by
an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW
model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision,
BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal
combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time
before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7
Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive
Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6
Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5
Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe
models of the new BMW 4 Series.</p>
<p>
  <strong>Driving progress ever forward.</strong>
<br />BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with
the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers
a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and
contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is
available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW
also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second
generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW
xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This
was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined
its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new
  front-wheel-drive format.</p>
<p>With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step
in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system.
This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in
hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving
the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the
  front wheels.</p>
<p>
<strong>Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.</strong>
<br />BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances
that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was
followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in
hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to
full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics
technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and
effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent
hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal
combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all
times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The
drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the
  full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.</p>
<p>
<strong>BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.</strong>
<br />In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series
makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end
BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts,
and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in
October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow
intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active
Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.</p>
