Munich. With its combination of extremely agile handling, M-typical performance and compact dimensions, the BMW M2 embodies unadulterated driving pleasure in its ultimate expression. The new BMW M2 with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 – 10.3 l/100 km [27.2 – 27.4 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 233 g/km according to WLTP, CO₂ class: G)* sees BMW M GmbH expanding the breadth of the M2 model line-up. Here, the all-wheel-drive system M xDrive will be available for the compact high-performance sports car for the first time. M xDrive splits the power developed by the 353 kW/480 hp six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology between the front and rear axles according to the situation at hand. Also in play is the Active M Differential, which distributes drive fully variably between the rear wheels as required, maximising traction and delivering the driving dynamics normally associated with a rear-wheel drive model.

These enhanced traction levels increase the car’s agility, dynamism and directional stability once again – and further improve its acceleration figures. The new BMW M2 with M xDrive therefore offers drivers the inimitable M feeling through all four seasons of the year, in almost any road conditions and in all weathers – without any trade-off in performance. The car showcases its optimised traction (which is also the product of specially developed chassis tuning) with sublime assurance in fluctuating grip conditions such as ice and snow as well as on the track. The market launch of the BMW M2 with M xDrive will begin in late summer 2026.

Superior traction and further enhanced dynamics thanks to M xDrive and Active M Differential.

The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to ensure fully variable and super-smooth division of the engine’s power between the front and rear wheels of the new BMW M2 with M xDrive. The system’s rear-wheel bias fits the familiar M blueprint. In normal driving, power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels. Only when they cannot feed any more power to the road does the all-wheel-drive system bring the front wheels into play.

M xDrive links up with the Active M Differential including M-specific traction control and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). Together, they adapt the car’s responses precisely to the situation in order to deliver a driving experience of unsurpassed dynamism with a noticeable increase in directional stability and traction.

The transfer case features a model-specific control unit and integrated wheel slip limitation. This allows it to compensate for any differences in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels. It can do this without having to involve the central DSC management, which makes the process extremely quick and further intensifies the M-typical sense of unshakable poise in highly dynamic driving situations.  

The M xDrive system’s responses can be configured via the M Setup menu. This means the driver can adapt the characteristics and performance attributes of the all-wheel drive system to both the driving situation at hand and their personal preferences. One of the options the driver can select is 2WD mode with DSC deactivated, whereby torque is sent to the rear wheels only. This unlocks a driving experience of remarkable purity.

A development with roots in racing car design: pre-chamber combustion.

The 3.0-litre straight-six engine powering the new BMW M2 with M xDrive uses BMW M Ignite technology – a new pre-chamber combustion process patented by BMW. This innovation is an example of the successful transfer of technology from racing cars to production models and will be introduced into all straight-six engines from BMW M as of mid-2026. The pre-chamber combustion process significantly reduces fuel consumption under high loads. At the same time, this new engine technology helps to meet the requirements of the EU7 standard. As before, the engine in the BMW M2 with M xDrive offers the performance characteristics for which M models are renowned, such as instantaneous response and linear power development into the higher reaches of the rev range. And this spirited power delivery is accompanied by an emotionally stirring soundtrack. The lower fuel consumption under high loads brought about by BMW M Ignite technology will be particularly appreciated by customers who like to use their car on track days, allowing them to keep lapping for longer with the same amount of fuel.

The BMW M2 with M xDrive is fitted as standard with an M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, which ensures the engine’s power is harnessed to maximum dynamic effect. Standard-fit M light-alloy wheels (19-inch at the front axle, 20-inch at the rear) transfer the power onto the road surface. Track tyres can be specified as an option.

Optimum stopping power on road and track is provided by M Compound brakes with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston callipers at the rear.

The combination of the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and Active M Differential gives the new BMW M2 with M xDrive further improved sprinting power. Indeed, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than its sister model with pure rear-wheel drive. The figure recorded using the “one-foot rollout” method¹ is 3.4 seconds. The BMW M2 with M xDrive reaches the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark from rest in 12.8 seconds – or 12.5 seconds with the “one-foot rollout” method. The sprint from 80 to 120 km/h (50 to 75 mph) is covered in 3.7 seconds. The M2 with M xDrive has a limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), rising to 285 km/h (177 mph) if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified.

BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue is available for a BMW M2 model for the first time.

The selection of exterior colours customers can choose from includes five metallic and three solid variants, plus six options from the BMW Individual range. For example, the BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue special paint finish will be available for a M2 for the first time, accentuating the visually expressive exterior design of the BMW M2 with M xDrive to particularly striking effect. 

The BMW M2: a successful model, built in Mexico.

The BMW M2 Coupé (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2 – 9.7 l/100 km [27.7 – 29.1 mpg imp], CO₂ emissions, combined: 230 – 221 g/km according to WLTP, CO₂ class: G)* was the biggest-selling high-performance model from BMW M GmbH in 2025. The new BMW M2 with M xDrive – like the other M2 models – will be built at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico. Production will begin in August 2026. The most important sales markets for the BMW M2 with M xDrive are the USA, Germany and China.

Munich. With BMW M Ignite technology, a new engine technology patented by BMW in 2024 is set to enter series production. This new kind of pre-chamber ignition system for petrol engines will debut in the six-cylinder in-line units for the BMW M2, BMW M3 and BMW M4 from mid-2026. One of its standout benefits is a significant reduction in fuel consumption under high loads – during track use, in particular. This new engine innovation has its roots in motor sport, making it another example of the transfer of technology from the race track to the road. And it also plays a major role in meeting the stringent requirements of the Euro 7 standard.

The centrepiece of BMW M Ignite technology is the pre-chamber positioned within the cylinder head. It is connected with the cylinder’s main combustion chamber by overflow openings. The pre-chamber has its own spark plug and ignition coil, meaning the engine has two ignition systems.

At low and medium revs, the conventional spark plug in the main combustion chamber fires before the spark plug in the pre-chamber. But when the engine is operating under higher revs and loads, the pre-chamber ignition takes over the lead role, with part of the fuel-air mixture channelled through the openings into the pre-chamber also ignited there. The flames generated as a result exit the pre-chamber at around the speed of sound.

These ignition jets then ignite the mixture in the main combustion chamber above the piston at multiple points at the same time. The result is a significantly higher combustion speed. Meanwhile, the possible cause of uncontrolled combustion – i.e. “knocking” – is also countered effectively. An additional effect of this technology is a drop in the temperature of the exhaust gas.

Other new technical features alongside the pre-chamber ignition include a higher compression ratio and turbochargers with variable turbine geometry.

BMW M Ignite technology boosts the efficiency of the six-cylinder in-line engines dramatically, especially when the engine is being pushed to its limits. Under high loads, fuel consumption drops substantially. This is particularly beneficial for BMW M customers who drive their cars on race circuits – e.g. during track days: the fuel consumption reduction enabled by BMW M Ignite technology means they can keep lapping for longer on the same amount of fuel.

As well as these efficiency gains, BMW M Ignite technology also helps to meet the new European Euro 7 standard, which will come into force in November 2026. In this way, BMW M is ensuring the high-performance cars fitted with this technology will continue to meet European registration requirements in the future. The new engines therefore represent another instance of technology from racing cars making its way into series-production models.

All variants of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 will come with BMW M Ignite technology from July 2026. Production of the BMW M2 featuring this technology will get underway in August 2026. The displacement and power outputs of all the models with BMW M Ignite technology will be unchanged from those of the corresponding outgoing engines.

Munich. BMW M GmbH once again achieved outstanding sales growth in 2025. For no less than the 14th time in a row, the manufacturer of high-performance and performance vehicles reported record sales. And for the 7th time running, BMW M GmbH vehicles outsold their competitors by a considerable margin. A sales total of 213,457 vehicles surpassed the previous year’s excellent result (206,582 vehicles) by three per cent. Both the high-performance and performance models set new benchmarks. Keys to success in all markets are a state-of-the-art model range spanning many vehicle classes and an extensive portfolio of powertrain options. In 2025, nearly every tenth BMW sold was a BMW M model. This share of 9.8 per cent represents another milestone.

“Our 14th consecutive sales record validates our strategy. We will continue to offer performance and high-performance vehicles across the entire BMW model range. With fully electric, partly electric and all-ICE powertrains,” says Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH.

High-performance executive models drive growth.
The high-performance models from BMW M GmbH combine racetrack capabilities with unrestricted everyday usability. BMW M5 models became key growth drivers in 2025. The BMW M5 Sedan (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 17.6–17.2 kWh/100 km and 5.0–4.8 l/100 km (WLTP); CO₂ emissions, weighted, combined: 114–108 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ classes: with discharged battery G, weighted, combined C; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.7–10.5 l/100 km (WLTP))*^,1 and the BMW M5 Touring (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 18.1–17.6 kWh/100 km and 5.3–5.0 l/100 km (WLTP); CO₂ emissions, weighted, combined: 119–114 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ classes: with discharged battery G, weighted, combined D–C; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.9–10.7 l/100 km (WLTP))*^,1 saw enormous sales increases in their first full year on the markets, making them key contributors to the success of BMW M GmbH. Both vehicles offer a model-specific version of the M HYBRID system with a peak output of 535 kW/727 hp and a maximum system torque of 1,000 Nm. A high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor combine with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission to provide power to the M xDrive all-wheel drive system. The great appeal of the BMW M5 Touring was underscored by a “Golden Steering Wheel” award. This accolade is awarded by “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag”, both published by the German Axel Springer SE publishing house. The high-performance model achieved the highest points score of all finalists in the competition. Moreover, the distinguished jury rated the BMW M5 Touring ahead of the other class finalists in all driving disciplines, as well as in terms of efficiency and value for money.

The BMW M2 Coupé (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2–9.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–221 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)* was the best-selling high-performance vehicle of 2025. This model is also available with a manual transmission (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2–9.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–221 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)* and as an even more track-focused BMW M2 CS special model (fuel consumption, combined: 10.0 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 226 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*. This delivers 390 kW/530 hp of power and recently set a new record time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nürburgring.

Favourite among performance enthusiasts: the BMW M3 family.
The BMW M3 models are another family of high-performance best-sellers. The series impresses with perfectly tailored model variants and includes sedans with various output levels. The BMW M3 entry-level model is a particularly purist vehicle that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and 353 kW/480 hp of power (fuel consumption, combined: 10.1 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–229 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*. Then there are the extremely popular Touring variants. 2025 also saw the launch of the BMW M3 CS Touring (fuel consumption, combined: 10.5 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 238 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*, the most sporting exemplar with 405 kW/551 hp. The large number of BMW M3 family sales is a clear sign of the model series’ continued allure and represents a major contribution to the new record of almost 71,500 high-performance vehicles sold.

M Performance model is BMW M GmbH best-seller.
A particularly popular model and also the best-selling BMW M GmbH vehicle of 2025 was the BMW X3 M50 (fuel consumption, combined: 8.3 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 189 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ class: G)*. The top athlete in the premium mid-size SAV segment offers unique performance capabilities and a charismatic appearance. The M TwinPower Turbo engine, combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, delivers a maximum system output of 293 kW/398 hp. The power of the BMW X3 M50 is complemented by specific chassis technology and signature M design elements. With these attributes, it overtook the BMW i4 and its M60 Gran Coupé xDrive variant (energy consumption, combined (WLTP): 20.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined (WLTP): 0 g/km, CO₂ class: A)*, which delivers an output of 442 kW/601 hp and a range of up to 551 km. The electric BMW i4 range-topper was the best-selling BMW M GmbH model from 2022 to 2024. 

In 2025, nearly every tenth BMW sold was a BMW M model, and the sales share of 9.8 per cent (9.4 per cent in the year prior) represents another new record. BMW M vehicles are especially popular in Switzerland, where nearly every fourth BMW ordered is a BMW M model. 

Exceptional sales total, top spots in the individual markets.
In the key markets, BMW M GmbH vehicles led the field, beating their competitors by a considerable margin. The models were particularly coveted in the U.S., the largest single market at over 72,000 units sold. But BMW M models also achieved top positions in markets such as Canada, Germany, Korea, South Africa and the United Kingdom. In China, BMW M GmbH achieved its largest absolute sales increase.

Focused model strategy to secure and expand top position.
The state-of-the-art model portfolio with its comprehensive range of ICE, plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles is at the heart of BMW M GmbH success. The development of models based on the Neue Klasse will provide further momentum. “Our strategy of being open towards new technologies once again paid off in 2025. BMW M GmbH stands for optimal performance, independently of the powertrain type. In all markets and across all vehicle classes. Customers looking for a performance or high-performance vehicle will always find it at BMW M GmbH”, says Sylvia Neubauer, Vice President Customer, Brand, Sales at BMW M GmbH.

Motorsport remains a key pillar at BMW M GmbH.
The BMW M Motorsport race cars – the BMW M Hybrid V8, the BMW M4 GT3 EVO and the BMW M4 GT4 EVO – achieved a total of more than 180 victories in 2025. In works motorsport, the BMW M Hybrid V8 delivered a competitive performance in the first half of the FIA WEC season and the BMW M GmbH marks 14th consecutive record year. The best result of a season marked by highs and lows was the 1-2 finish at Road America. The BMW M4 GT3 EVO had a tremendous season. While the 1-2 victory at the Bathurst 12 Hour race in Australia was still won by the predecessor model, the EVO version seamlessly continued the series with top results. Triumphs at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (Germany), the Suzuka 1000 (Japan), the Indianapolis 8 Hour race and in the GTD Pro Class at the 6 Hours of the Glen and the Petit Le Mans (both U.S.) are among the highlights of a season that saw over 80 victories and 100 further podium finishes.

Teams driving the BMW M4 GT4 EVO achieved over 100 victories in the 2025 season. More than any other model, the BMW M4 GT4 is associated with customer racing. The victory in the SP10 at the Nürburgring 24 Hours was a particular high point. In the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) racing series, these vehicles came out on top in nine out of ten races. Moreover, the BMW M4 GT4 EVO triumphed in all classes at the GT4 America. The strong results of the GT4 teams helped BMW M Motorsport secure the SRO manufacturers’ title in the GT4 segment. The 2026 season will see the debut of the BMW M2 Racing as a new entry-level vehicle complementing the model portfolio for customer racing.

The new BMW M2 CS (fuel consumption combined: 10.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 226 g/km according to WLTP, CO2 class G)* sets a new benchmark on the legendary Nordschleife racetrack of the Nürburgring on 11 April 2025. Driven by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger, it completed the 20.823-kilometre Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit in 7:25.5 minutes, beating the previous best time for compact cars by eight seconds. This record-setting BMW M2 CS not only raises the bar in the compact car class, but also further solidifies BMW M's reputation as a manufacturer of high-performance vehicles that excel both on the road and on the racetrack.

"The BMW M2 CS has achieved a significant milestone with its lap time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nordschleife, showcasing the potential for combining performance, technology and exceptional driving dynamics into a single vehicle," stated Franciscus van Meel, the Managing Director of BMW M GmbH. The continuation of a success story.

The previous best time for a BMW M2 model was set by Weidinger in April 2023, when he completed the course in 7:38.7 minutes. Two years later, he beat this time by 13 seconds, breaking the class record of 7:30 minutes for the first time. With the newly set best time of 7:25.5 minutes, the BMW M2 CS demonstrates its outstanding performance as well as the innovative power and engineering skills of BMW M GmbH.

Previous record runs on the Nordschleife by the BMW M4 CS, the BMW M4 CSL and the BMW M3 CS, all mid-range vehicles, achieved times under 7:30 minutes. The BMW M4 CSL also holds the best lap time ever recorded for a BMW Group production car. The official, notarised time is 7:18.137 minutes.

The "Green Hell" myth: The Nordschleife as a touchstone.

Often referred to as the 'Green Hell', the Nordschleife racetrack is considered one of the most demanding and challenging racetracks in the world. Measuring 20.832 kilometres in length with over 70 bends, it places the highest demands on drivers and vehicles alike. A fast lap on this track proves a vehicle's performance and handling capabilities. The Nordschleife lap times are the gold standard for measuring a vehicle's sporting performance and driving dynamics. Record runs are monitored by a neutral testing organisation, and the vehicles are checked to ensure they are in standard condition. This detailed inspection ensures that the record runs are carried out using production vehicles.

The Nürburgring - Home of BMW M.

BMW M and the Nürburgring have been in partnership for over a quarter of a century. From the BMW M Power Grandstand and BMW M Bridge to the BMW M Driving Experience and BMW M Test Centre, not to mention test drives on the Nordschleife for M vehicles en route to series production, the partnership between BMW M and the Nürburgring has been a resounding success for over 25 years. The new BMW M2 CS is based on the second generation of the BMW M2 and builds on what is already an extraordinary level of performance. For example, the high-revving inline 6-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology develops an impressive 523 hp in the M2 CS – 50 more than in the standard BMW M2. The M2 CS sends its power to the rear wheels via a standard 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

Intelligent lightweight design saves 44 kilograms.

With the M2 CS, BMW M has reduced the weight of the standard 8-speed Steptronic-equipped M2 by 44 kilograms. This was achieved through judicious use of lightweight materials, such as exterior and interior components made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and fitting the M2 CS with forged M alloy wheels as standard.

Upgraded inline 6-cylinder engine brings significant increases in power and torque.

For duty in the BMW M2 CS, BMW M has upgraded the 3.0-liter S58 inline 6-cylinder engine found in the standard M2, intensfying an already exceptional performance experience, particularly in highly dynamic driving situations. Their work further sharpens the engine’s remarkable power characteristics and perfectly accentuates the linear power delivery – sustained into the higher reaches of the rev range – familiar in BMW M models. Compared to the standard BMW M2 with the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission, maximum torque has been raised by 36 lb-ft to 479 and is available across a broad rev range – between 2,700 and 5,620 rpm. The engine produces its maximum power of 523 hp at 6,250 rpm and redlines at 7,200 rpm. And the accelerator mapping and response have been optimized in all drive modes to deliver seemingly instantaneous responses to the driver’s inputs.

Inspiring performance born from Motorsport.

This enhanced performance is achieved by modifying the engine management and provides further proof of the outstanding potential of the S58 6-cylinder engine developed by BMW M, which also serves as the basis for the power unit used in the BMW M4 GT3 EVO racing car. The engine’s M TwinPower Turbo technology comprises a pair of mono-scroll turbochargers, each feeding three cylinders, an indirect intercooler supplied by a low-temperature circuit, and an electronically controlled wastegate. The technology package also includes High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing, and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing. The engine also has an array of details borrowed directly from racing design that contribute to its lightning-fast response, appetite for revs, and high-performance capability in track use. These details include an extremely rigid crankcase with a sleeve-free, closed-deck construction, a forged crankshaft with lightweight design, cylinder bores with a wire-arc sprayed iron coating, and a 3D-printed core for the cylinder head.

The M-specific cooling system ensures the powertrain components maintain an optimal operating temperature even under heavy loads, and the oil circuit is designed to handle extreme dynamic driving situations. A map-controlled oil pump ensures reliable oil supply even under extreme acceleration.

The engine sends its drive power to the rear wheels through an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. The Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever makes it possible to alter the transmission’s shift characteristics, with a choice of three clearly distinguishable settings. Both the selector lever in the latest M design and the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel enable the driver to change gears manually if desired.

Ferocious acceleration from a standstill and on the move.

A model-specific engine mounting with a higher spring rate makes for a more rigid connection of the drive unit to the structure of the BMW M2 CS. The extremely direct transmission of power to the drivetrain optimizes response. Thanks to the lightning-fast power delivery, in combination with the increased engine power and the reduction in weight, the BMW M2 CS is able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds – 0.2 seconds quicker than the standard Steptronic-equipped M2. The mid-range sprint from 80 to 120 km/h takes 3.4 seconds. Top speed with the standard M Driver’s Package is electronically limited to 302 km/h. The dynamic power delivery is backed by an emotionally rich engine note from the M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps and four exhaust tips characteristic of M, which are finished in matte black on the BMW M2 CS.

Chassis and brakes optimized for the increased performance.

The chassis technology and braking system in the BMW M2 CS are precisely tailored to the improved performance characteristics of the engine and the specific weight balance of the M2 CS. The chassis has been lowered by 8 mm and adapted specially for the CS with unique tuning of the springs, dampers, and chassis control systems. These modifications improve driving dynamics significantly in all scenarios – including under extremely hard driving. Indeed, the settings for the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and M Dynamic Mode have been optimized precisely to meet the demands of driving on a track. The standard Adaptive M Suspension has been given a revised, model-specific setup, as have the M Servotronic steering, M Sport differential, and the integrated braking system. Standard M Compound brakes with red calipers provide authoritative stopping power. M Carbon ceramic brakes with red brake calipers are available as an option. Standard equipment also includes CS-exclusive Style 827M forged alloy wheels with a double-spoke design and matte Gold Bronze finish. Measuring 19-inches at the front and 20-inches at the rear, the wheels are fitted as standard with high performance tires sized 275/35 ZR19 front and 285/30 ZR20 rear. Track tires and ultra-track tires are available.

Lightweight carbon fibre components and CS-exclusive details.

The exterior of the BMW M2 CS underscores its high performance mission with CFRP components and exclusive details that set it apart. It boasts the signature M exterior mirror caps, a standard M Carbon roof, and a CS-specific rear diffuser, all crafted from exposed carbon fibre. Adding to the sporty and dynamic appearance are a matte black front splitter and a unique black BMW M kidney grille with optimized air inlets. The lightweight CFRP trunk lid with integrated ducktail spoiler is emblazoned with a striking “M2 CS” logo featuring a bold red border.

Four colours are available for the exterior finish of the new BMW M2 CS: Black Sapphire metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, and Portimao Blue metallic are available at no extra cost, and BMW Individual Velvet Blue metallic is optionally available at a price of $4,000. Adaptive LED Headlights with Shadowline dark inlays are also standard.

Carbon fibre accents and a clear Motorsport influence continue inside.

The interior of the new BMW M2 CS surrounds the occupants in a performance-focused environment combining the sporty feel of exquisite Alcantara with innovative lightweight design. The driver and passenger are supported by weight-optimized, heated M Carbon bucket seats with illuminated “CS” logos. The integrated head restraints are removable for helmet clearance and, thanks to the option of integrating multi-point harnesses, improve the M2 CS’s track readiness. The surfaces of the seats are finished exclusively in Black Merino leather with M Colour highlights.

With a flat-bottomed rim, gearshift paddles, a red centre marker at 12 o’clock, and two M buttons for selecting individually configured vehicle setups, the standard heated M Alcantara steering wheel features a traditional three-spoke design and brings Motorsport flair to the cockpit. The trim elements in the instrument panel and centre console are finished in carbon fibre. Additional details include a red “CS” logo on the carbon fibre centre console, M seatbelts, black threshold plates with an “M2 CS” logo and red outline. Now illuminated with the “CS” logo, the door trim panels certainly grab the attention. The colour of the lighting used here can be set individually with the standard ambient lighting. When switched off, a carbon structure is visible. Rounding off the sporty interior is the Black Roofliner.

BMW Operating System 8.5, digital control for the climate functions.

Standard equipment in the new BMW M2 CS also includes automatic climate control, Comfort Access, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System, and BMW Digital Cockpit Professional, including the BMW Maps navigation system. As well as the BMW Head-Up Display, it also includes Augmented View on the control display. The standard smartphone integration allows wireless use of Apple CarPlay^® and Android Auto™. The M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display and BMW Head-Up Display add to the progressive sports car flair in the cockpit. The fully-digital display grouping consists of a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display. These serve as a platform for the BMW iDrive control and operation system, based on BMW Operating System 8.5, which can also be used to digitally operate the climate control functions. In the BMW M2 CS, temperature and ventilation settings, heated seats, and the heated steering wheel can be controlled either by touch using a special menu option in the lower area of the control display or by voice command with the help of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

M-specific controls enable direct access for an extensive range of functions.

The CS carries over the cutting-edge operating concept for setup customization from the standard BMW M2. At the heart is the Setup button on the centre console. This provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, Adaptive M Suspension, M Servotronic steering, integrated braking system working in conjunction with the M Compound brakes, and the M Traction Control function, which allows drivers to choose from ten individual intervention thresholds for wheel slip limitation. The M Drift Analyzer shows the angle and duration of drifts executed by the driver, while the M Laptimer is ideal for those striving for the perfect lap.

Semi-automated driving and parking systems fitted as standard include Forward Collision Mitigation, Active Cruise Control with Distance Control, Speed Limit Info, Lane Keeping Assistant, and the Parking Assistant.

Richmond Hill, ON.  Already the archetype of driving pleasure for the purist, the new BMW M2 raises the bar for compact high-performance sports cars in the premium segment. The 2025 BMW M2 adds more power, greater visual impact, and innovative equipment and digital features. Front and centre of this fresh round of updates is the 20 hp added to its output: the high-revving inline 6-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology now tops out at 473 hp. There are new design accents for the exterior and interior, a broadened exterior colour range, and the introduction of BMW Operating System 8.5 to support the latest generation of BMW iDrive.

The 2025 BMW M2 takes the classic driver’s car concept of a straight-six engine, 6-speed manual gearbox, and rear-wheel-drive – a unique proposition among its rivals – to a new stage of evolution. In combination with its compact dimensions, chassis technology tuned perfectly for both everyday driving and track use, and a state-of-the-art operating system that allows personalization of a wide range of vehicle functions, this makes the new M2 ideally equipped to write the next chapter in the BMW M brand’s history of success in this segment.

The new BMW M2 will be built alongside the new BMW 2 Series Coupe at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico. It will be launched worldwide with a production phase-in from August 2024.

M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine with extra output and torque.

As well as the power itself, the inimitable way in which the 6-cylinder engine delivers that power also plays a key role in the performance experience offered by the new BMW M2. The upgraded version of the engine preserves the linear power delivery, sustained into the upper reaches of the rev range, that is such a hallmark feature of M models. Its maximum torque is on tap across a wide rev band. When power is channelled via the standard 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, the torque figure now rises to 443 lb-ft between 2,700 and 5,620 rpm. With the no-charge option 6-speed manual gearbox, peak torque remains at 406 lb-ft between 2,650 and 6,130 rpm. The engine produces its increased maximum power output of 473 hp at 6,250 rpm, with revs topping out at 7,200 rpm.

To support the driver in getting the most out of the newfound power, advances have been made with the accelerator mapping and response in all the drive modes selectable via the M Setup menu. As a result, the new BMW M2 offers noticeably more rapid reactions to the driver’s requests for acceleration – both when specified with either the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission or the 6-speed manual gearbox.

Motorsport expertise elevates everyday performance.

Along with a pair of mono-scroll turbochargers, an indirect intercooler, and an electronically controlled wastegate, the M TwinPower Turbo technology of the straight-six engine includes High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing, and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing. The engine also has an array of details borrowed directly from motorsport design, the impact of which is most clearly evident in its lightning-fast response, appetite for revs, and consistent capability in track use. These details include an extremely rigid crankcase with a sleeve-free, closed-deck construction, a forged crankshaft with lightweight design, cylinder bores with a wire-arc sprayed iron coating, and a 3D-printed core for the cylinder head.

The Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever for the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission makes it possible to alter the shift characteristics, with a choice of three clearly distinguishable settings. Both the selector lever in the latest M design and the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel enable manual gear selection at any time.

Drivers craving a more direct interaction with the powertrain can specify the 6-speed manual gearbox. The manual features the Gear Shift Assistant, which uses rev-matching control to ensure slip-free operation when downshifting.

With the increased output, the manual M2 shaves 0.1 second off its 0 to 100 km/h time, completing the trip in just 4.2 seconds. The M Steptronic transmission cuts that time to 4.0 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, or 285 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package. The dynamic power delivery is accompanied by a stirring chorus from the M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps.

Expanded range of exterior paint finishes, fresh exterior details, new-look alloy wheels.

For 2025, customers can specify their new BMW M2 in a choice of three solid colours, seven metallic shades, and four BMW Individual paint finishes. The expanded range now offers Sao Paulo Yellow, Vegas Red metallic, Portimao Blue metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic, Frozen Pure Grey metallic, and Frozen Portimao Blue II metallic. The new selection of BMW Individual paint finishes for the new BMW M2 includes Java Green metallic, Voodoo Blue, Grigio Telesto Pearl Effect metallic and Twilight Purple Pearl Effect metallic.

The new BMW M2 is fitted as standard with M alloy wheels Style 930M in a double-spoke design with a Jet Black finish, 19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear. These same wheels are also available in a burnished finish or, new for 2025, a bright silver finish.

The signature M quad tailpipes are now finished in black chrome as standard. The model designation badges on the trunk lid and grille are now black, bordered in sliver.

New steering wheels and seat surfaces, M Carbon bucket seats now available as an individual option.

The most important interface between driver and vehicle – the steering wheel – has been newly designed, bringing a fresh look to the interior of the 2025 BMW M2. The standard-fitted M leather steering wheel is heated and now has a flat-bottomed rim and a new design for the spokes. A red centre marker in the 12 o’clock position, gearshift paddles, and the two M buttons for selecting individually configured vehicle setups underscore the track-ready feel.

The M Sport seats in Vernasca leather can now be ordered in Black with a Red highlight. Also, the weight-saving M Carbon bucket seats for the new BMW M2 are now available as a standalone option. With surfaces in Merino leather, electric adjustment and heating, removable head restraints, and facility for adding a multi-point harness, they optimize both all-day comfort and support during sporty driving.

BMW Operating System 8.5, digital control for the climate functions.

The M-specific content in the BMW Curved Display and optional BMW Head-Up Display enhances the cockpit’s tech-forward sports car aura. The fully digital screen grouping, made up of a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display, now provides the stage for the latest evolution of the BMW iDrive system based on BMW Operating System 8.5. The functions of the climate control system are now also operated digitally. The temperature and ventilation settings as well as the seat heating and steering wheel heating in the new BMW M2 can be controlled either by touch using a special menu option in the lower area of the control display or by voice command with the help of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

This broad adoption of digitalization leads to a further reduction in the number of buttons and controls in the cockpit and is accompanied by a redesign of the instrument panel. New adjustment controls for the air vent grilles in the centre of the instrument panel and on the driver’s and front passenger side of the cockpit allow the airflow direction to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

The interior trim elements on the instrument panel and centre console of the new BMW M2 come as standard in new Matte Dark Graphite Trim. Interior finishes in M Fine Brushed Aluminum, Aluminum Rhombicle Anthracite, M Carbon Fibre are available as options.

M-specific operating concept, extensive standard equipment.

At the heart of the M-specific operating concept is the Setup button on the centre console. This provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, the standard adaptive M suspension, the M Servotronic steering, the integrated braking system working in conjunction with the M Compound brakes, and the M Traction Control function, which allows drivers to set individual intervention thresholds for wheel slip limitation. The 6-speed’s Gear Shift Assistant is also activated and deactivated via the M Setup menu.

Standard equipment for the new BMW M2 also includes three-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, M Seat Belts and the BMW Live Cockpit Plus with BMW Maps navigation system. The standard smartphone integration enables use of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. Among the optional items available are Harman Kardon surround sound system, Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go function and the Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant.

Also on the options list is the BMW Live Cockpit Professional in the new BMW M2 now also includes Augmented View on the control display. This supplements the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of the driver’s view on the information display or control display and augmenting it with contextual real-time information. At confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route.

Munich. With a brace of victories in the “Best Cars” competition, BMW has backed up its successful end to 2023 with a similarly fruitful beginning to 2024. The BMW 2 Series Coupé wrapped up class victory in the compact segment for the third time in succession, while the BMW X1 led the way in the “compact SUV” category. The “Best Cars” award – voted on by readers of German motoring magazine “auto, motor und sport” and in its 48th edition this year – is one of the most prestigious in the European automotive industry. Almost 100,000 respondents took part in the survey, selecting one overall winner and one “imported car” champion from a field of 455 models across 13 vehicle categories.

The start of 2024 was also marked by class victory for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan in the “Large Car” category of the “Women's Worldwide Car of the Year” award. 75 female automotive journalists from 52 countries picked out their favourites from a total of 62 vehicles in five categories. Intended to showcase the influence of women in the automotive industry and presented for the 14th time this year, this prize takes into account factors such as safety, quality, price, design, ride comfort, everyday usability and environmental impact. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan won over the jury members with its electrified drive system line-up (including the fully electric BMW i5), as well as its spaciousness, advanced technology and now fully vegan interior.

This successful beginning to the year saw BMW building on its run of success in a large number of awards in 2023. Models from the premium brand’s current range claimed numerous prizes in both its home market of Germany and its most important sales regions internationally. The winners stretched across all the relevant categories, with compact models, luxury vehicles and high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH all making waves. As well as vehicles powered by combustion engines, the readers and juries also recognised a strikingly high number of representatives from BMW’s constantly expanding electric mobility range.

“We’re very proud that our various BMW vehicles have won awards in so many national and international competitions. Newcomer to the ranks of high-performance models and a fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle both win a “Golden Steering Wheel”.

The “Golden Steering Wheel” presented by German publications “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag” is one of the most prestigious distinctions in the European car industry. BMW took two of these coveted trophies back to Munich in 2023. The BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 – 10.1 l/100 km [27.2 – 28.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 229 g/km in the WLTP cycle) ranked first in the “sports cars” category and the fully electric BMW iX1 topped the “compact class”.

Both models added a string of other international awards to their collections over the course of 2023. For example, the first ever BMW M3 Touring – which combines the dynamic prowess of a high-performance car with impressive levels of practicality – was elected sports car of the year in the category for vehicles costing up to 120,000 euros by readers of “Auto Bild Sportscars” magazine. And acclaimed British TV programme “Top Gear” honoured the BMW M GmbH newcomer with the title “All The Car You'll Ever Need” in its “Car of the Year” awards.

The BMW iX1 collected a trio of awards in China, including “All-Electric Premium SUV of the Year”. It also won the French “Automobile Award 2023” in the “Green Tech” category and the “autonis Award” bestowed by readers of “auto, motor und sport” to the year’s most attractive new design.

Fully electric BMW i5 enjoys immediate success around the world.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW i5 also claimed an “autonis” prize. Now also available with a fully electric drive system for the first time, the new edition of the world’s most successful business sedan was also named “Car of the Year” by Portuguese magazine “Frontline”. The BMW i5 was also presented with equivalent awards in Norway and Denmark, both particularly important markets for electric vehicles. Norwegian daily “Dagbladet” teamed up with online portals “DinSide” and “Elbi24” to celebrate the BMW i5. While in Denmark, the i5 fought off competition from six other models to gain the most votes for “Car of the Year” in a final round made up exclusively of fully electric models. The jury of 20 Danish motoring journalists chose the BMW i5 as their winner by a large margin.

Chinese publication “Auto World” crowned the BMW i5 as “Most Anticipated Premium Executive Sedan of the Year”, and the fully electric business sedan also collected three awards in Great Britain: “The Car Expert” put the BMW i5 in top spot in its “Best Large Car Award”, it was named “Premium Car of the Year” in the “2024 Electrifying.com Awards” and the “Comfortable Cruiser” topped its class in Carwow’s “Car of the Year Awards 2024”.

The awards underscore the ability of the new BMW i5 Sedan to win people over with numerous different qualities: from character-rich design, a unique balance between sportiness and comfort, innovative equipment features and progressive digital services to a drive system whose power is matched by its capability over long distances. And it also uses latest-generation BMW eDrive technology to transfer the brand’s signature dynamic ability to the road with zero local emissions. In addition, adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help to give the BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined: 18.9 – 15.9 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) a range of 498 – 582 kilometres (309 – 362 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW’s electric mobility offensive is recognised with awards.

The BMW brand’s fully electric model line-up as a whole enjoyed a successful year worldwide in 2023. As well as the BMW iX1 and BMW i5, this was particularly true of the BMW i7 and BMW i4. In Great Britain alone, these two models were both among the winners in seven awards. Both won the “Auto Express New Car Award” in their respective vehicle classes. The BMW i4 also claimed the “Pocket-lint Award” and “Business Car Award”, and the BMW i7 celebrated success in both the “What Car? Electric Car Awards” and the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”. The fully electric luxury sedan racked up five prizes in China, too, including the “Car of the Year” distinction from leading online magazine “sohu.com”.

There was also much to celebrate in France and the USA, where the BMW i7 was given the “Best Overall and Best Value” rating from “Money” magazine and praised by “wards auto” magazine for its standout luxury ambience and digital user experience with BMW Theatre Screen in the rear compartment. Renowned US magazine “car and driver” named both the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW i4 eDrive40 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 19.1 – 16.1 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) among the “Best 10” of 2023.

Top marks and distinctions for the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series ranges, the BMW M2 and the BMW X3.

BMW set the seal on a successful year in Germany with a two-pronged triumph. The BMW 3 Series and BMW X3 closed out 2023 with class victory in the coveted “Auto Trophy”. The BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring, for example, took clear victories in the hotly contested midsize segment of the readers’ survey conducted by German title “Auto Zeitung”, racking up 19.0 per cent of the vote. This was the seventh class win in a row for the 3 Series. Meanwhile, the rugged aura, interior spaciousness and commitment to electrification of the BMW X3 helped it account for 15.3 per cent of the votes cast and therefore the highest points total in the high-volume vehicle segment of “SUVs costing 30,000 – 60,000 euros”.

The BMW 3 Series was a particularly prolific award-winner in Great Britain. In the “Business Car Awards”, the 3 Series won the “Best Premium Car” prize, and it also gained entry to the “Hall of Fame” of “Fleet News” magazine as the “Most Reliable Company Car”. The BMW 3 Series won twice in the “What Car? Used Car Awards”, topping both the “Used Executive Car” category and overall “Used Car of the Year”. And then there was the “Best Used Hybrid Executive Car” distinction for the BMW 330e Sedan (fuel consumption, combined: 1.9 – 1.4 l/100 km [148.7 – 201.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined 20.1 – 18.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 43 – 32 g/km in the WLTP cycle). The plug-in hybrid model also tasted success in the USA, where “Money” magazine described it as “Best for Handling”.

Adding to the wave of success enjoyed by the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 4 Series – with its standout sporting appeal – also enriched the brand’s glittering international reputation in the premium midsize segment. The best example of this came in the BMW 4 Series Coupé and BMW 4 Series Convertible’s showing in the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards” in Great Britain. The closed-roof two-door won the “Coupe of the Year” for the third year in succession in 2023. And this year its open-top sister model also won the “Convertible of the Year” award.

Two other British awards were claimed by the BMW M2. It was voted “Best Performance Car” in “The Car Expert Awards”, and the compact high-performance sports car also took the title of “Performance Car of the Year” in the “Auto Express New Car Awards”.

Munich. The Grande Prémio de Portugal from 24th to 26th March at Portimão marks the start of an anniversary season for BMW M, the 25th season as Official Car of MotoGP™. The close partnership with MotoGP™ rights holder Dorna Sports dates back to 1999. The start of the anniversary season in Portugal will see the new BMW M safety car make its debut. The new BMW M2 MotoGP™ safety car is based on the new BMW M2 (combined fuel consumption in accordance with WLTP: 9.8 – 9.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions in accordance with WLTP: 222 – 218 g/km; details as per NEFZ: –)*, which made its world premiere in October.

The new BMW M2 impresses with the traditional characteristics of a high-performance sports car – in a concentrated form and with state-of-the-art technology. With its compact dimensions and the 460 hp TwinPower turbo in-line 6-cylinder engine, the new BMW M2 is the perfect basis for a BMW M safety car. The BMW M2 was kitted out with various safety car elements for its deployment on MotoGP™ racetracks. These elements include a roll bar, RECARO seats, 6-point racing harness, a fire extinguisher, the safety car roof bar, and the matching front light. Several M Performance parts, such as exhaust system, chassis, carbon wing mirror covers, diffusor, and rear wing have also been installed. BMW M GmbH closes anniversary year with new sales record.

Munich. At the end of its anniversary year, BMW M GmbH has once again achieved record results. Global sales of performance and high-performance cars rose to 177,257 vehicles during the 2022 financial year. This represents an increase of 8.4 per cent compared to the previous year, despite the continuing challenging conditions in the area of logistics and supply chains. The most important single market in 2022 was again the USA, with the second most important sales region again being the German domestic market, followed by the UK.

“The enthusiasm of the M community for emotionally powerful performance on the road and on the racetrack has carried us through the entire anniversary year,” says Franciscus van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH. “This is also expressed in a new sales record for BMW M automobiles, which gives us a positive outlook for 2023.”

BMW i4 M50: the best-selling BMW M automobile drives locally emission-free.
At the same time, 2022 marks BMW M GmbH's successful start into the age of electric mobility. “The best-selling BMW M automobile of 2022 is the all-electric BMW i4 M50,” says Timo Resch, Head of Customer, Brand and Sales at BMW M GmbH. “For us, this is a clear signal that the unique M feeling has arrived in the world of electrified vehicles.” The BMW i4 M50 is powered by an electric motor on both the front and rear axles, which together generate a maximum output of 400 kW/544 hp. The perfectly coordinated power delivery of the two e-motors and independent suspension tuning ensure an M-typical driving experience characterised by dynamics, agility and precision, which proved to be a real crowd-puller right from the outset.

With the BMW iX M60*, a second all-electric performance car from BMW M GmbH made a highly successful debut. During the course of 2023, BMW M GmbH will continue its product offensive with, among other things, the first electrified high-performance automobile, the BMW XM, and the BMW i7 M70, a BMW M automobile based on the fully electric BMW i7. The further transformation towards electric mobility has also already been mapped out. In order to be able to include high-performance cars with purely electric drive in the range in the future, BMW M GmbH will intensify the corresponding concept testing in 2023. The focus will be on an integrated driving dynamics control system and an electric M xDrive all-wheel drive system with four electric motors, which will ensure that the emotionally powerful M feeling reaches an even higher level.

Anniversary year with spectacular premieres, BMW M3 and BMW M4 remain on the road to success, fast-paced launch for the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupe*.
The celebrations of the 50th anniversary of BMW M GmbH were accompanied by debuts for numerous spectacular new models. The broad spectrum of new releases ranged from the second generation of the puristic BMW M2*, with its combination of straight six-cylinder engine, 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, which evokes classic driving pleasure in a high-performance automobile, to the extroverted BMW XM with its 480 kW/653 hp M HYBRID drive. The first BMW M3 Touring* also offers completely new ways to experience M-typical performance. This diversity creates ideal conditions for attracting additional target groups and generating further growth in 2023.

The current increase in sales figures is also based on sales successes in a wide range of vehicle segments. The high-performance sports cars of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 series, which – including the new BMW M3 Touring – are available in four body variants, in two performance levels, with a choice of a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission, as well as with rear-wheel drive or the all-wheel drive system M xDrive, continued to enjoy particularly widespread popularity in 2022. BMW M GmbH thus covers a wide range of customer needs in this core segment.

With an exceptionally strong performance within their competitive environment, the high-performance cars based on BMW X models also contributed to BMW M GmbH's new sales record. The upcoming upgrade for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M models in spring 2023 will provide effective impetus for a continuation of this success story.

The successful launch of the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupe in 2022 proved to be a highlight in the performance car segment. The new edition of the compact two-door is powered by a 275 kW/374 hp straight-six engine and is now also available with classic rear-wheel drive. “The new sales record for BMW M Automobiles is based on our successful presence in a broad range of vehicle segments,” says Timo Resch. “With our wide-ranging product portfolio, we are also ideally positioned for the future.”

Premiere at Daytona: the new BMW M3 CS* and the BMW M Hybrid V8.
In addition, BMW M GmbH fulfils the desire for particularly concentrated racing characteristics with attractive special models – as early as 2022 with the BMW M4 CSL* and soon with the new BMW M3 CS.

The BMW M3 CS will make its world debut on the last weekend of January as part of the 24-hour race at Daytona. The tradition-steeped competition in the US state of Florida is also the venue for BMW M Motorsport's comeback to endurance racing. The new BMW M Hybrid V8 will compete there for the first time. 47 years after the Daytona overall victory of the legendary BMW 3.0 CSL, the new LMDh prototype is set to race for points in the IMSA GTP class of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship before also competing in the official FIA World Endurance Championship at Le Mans and elsewhere in 2024.

The final phase of the development process and the subsequent test drives on various race tracks were among the highlights of 2022 for the BMW M GmbH motorsport department, while the all-important success on the race track was the overall victory in the DTM drivers' and teams' championships. South African Sheldon van der Linde and Team Schubert Motorsport secured the title win in the prestigious touring car championship in the very first season with the new BMW M4 GT3.

Munich. BMW will be participating in the Essen Motor Show 2022 with numerous attractions and a diverse programme. Europe's largest trade fair for tuning, motorsport and sporty production vehicles will open its doors at the Gruga-Halle grounds from 3 to 11 December 2022. Among other things, BMW will inspire visitors with a world premiere: In Essen, the new BMW M2 with BMW M Performance Parts (fuel consumption combined: 9.8 - 9.6 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 222 - 218 g/km according to WLTP; data according to NEDC: - ) will be on display for the first time.

Furthermore, in addition to current BMW M automobiles, other sporty retrofit options from the Original BMW accessories range will be presented at the BMW stand in hall 3. Interviews and autograph sessions with star guests from the motorsport scene round off the varied programme at the BMW stand.

Sharpened appearance, enhanced performance: BMW M Performance Parts for the new BMW M2.

In addition to the sharpened appearance, the customisation options developed specifically for the new BMW M2 also optimise the impressive driving characteristics of the high-performance sports car. The striking add-on parts for the front, rear and sides of the compact two-door model are made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), which is sealed with a transparent coating to reveal the typical fibre structure of the material. Exterior components such as the M Performance Carbon front attachment, the M Performance Carbon side skirt attachments, the M Performance Carbon rear diffuser or the M Performance Carbon rear spoiler underscore the puristic racing genes of the new BMW M2, whilst also having a positive effect on its aerodynamic properties.

Sporty, ambitious drivers will also appreciate the wide range of BMW M Performance Parts in the areas of drive, chassis and cockpit. The M Performance Titanium silencer system, for example, not only saves eight kilograms in weight vs. the standard component, but also brings out the sound of the 338 kW/460 hp straight six-cylinder engine even more intensively. In the interior, the M Performance interior trims Carbon/Alcantara, the M Performance armrest Alcantara and many other high-quality options create a genuine sports car flair, while the M Performance knee pads Alcantara provide a secure grip even during sporty, ambitious driving. This allows you to fully enjoy the agility and cornering dynamics of the M Performance suspension on a closed-off track - or simply enjoy racing-inspired driving pleasure in everyday life.

Fascinating model range, inspiring discussion partners.

The latest safety car addition from BMW M has been equipped with the entire product range of BMW M Performance Parts for its use in the premium class of road motorcycle racing.

The Red Bull Driftbrothers will bring even more performance and racing aesthetics to Essen. Elias and Johannes Hountondji will be exhibiting one of their drift cars at the BMW stand: Their racing cars are based on a production model of the BMW M4 Series. With a customised exhaust system, custom body kit and an aerodynamics package, it will amaze not only horsepower enthusiasts. On the first three days of the fair, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the Driftbrothers during an autograph session. However, the brothers from Swabia are not the only celebrity guests: on Saturday, 3 December 2022, BMW M Motorsport works driver Jens Klingmann will welcome entrepreneur, influencer and TV presenter Jean Pierre Kraemer (JP Performance) for an interview. The tuning expert will bring along his BMW M4 CSL, which can be admired at the BMW stand for the entire duration of the show.

Richmond Hill, ON. The second generation of the celebrated BMW M2 excites and delights with all the elements of a classic high-performance sports car, with fresh intensity and cutting-edge technology. The new M2 encapsulates the sheer joy of driving; compact dimensions, an inline 6-cylinder engine, a manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, and advanced technology are all central to its appeal. Fleet-footed agility and handling that remains easily controllable even as the driver explores the limits are qualities essential to the emotional experience of new BMW M2. Its expressive character is reflected in a visually powerful design that makes no secret of the car’s capability before it even turns a wheel.

The expressive styling of the new BMW M2 is a clear indication of its mission to deliver sporty driving pleasure, and stems from its powerful proportions within its compact dimensions. At 4580 mm long, 1887 mm wide, and 1403 mm tall, the new M2 is 104 mm longer than its predecessor, 33 mm wider and 7 mm lower.

The 2747 mm wheelbase of the new BMW M2 is a critical factor in its agility. It is 110 mm shorter than that of the BMW M4 but 54 mm longer than the previous M2, benefitting legroom front and rear. Track widths have increased by 38 mm (to 1617) at the front and 4 mm (to 1605) at the rear, matching the M4.

M-specific design features accentuate the performance-led character.

The athletic proportions of the new BMW M2 combine with clean surfaces and sculpted forms that accentuate its wide stance. But the M2 is most obviously differentiated from the BMW 2 Series Coupe by the M-specific design features necessary for cool air intake and routing and aerodynamic balance.

The front of the new BMW M2 is dominated by a wide, frameless BMW twin kidney grille with prominent horizontal elements. The M-typical three-section lower air intakes have almost rectangular contours and optimize cooling of the powertrain components and brakes. The boldly contoured headlight units are positioned to the outer edges of the front fascia. Inspired by the legendary BMW 02 models, they each have a single circular headlight using full-LED technology for both low beam and high beam. The contrasting background of the lights showcases the advanced technology at work. The daytime driving lights take the form of U-shaped light arrangements at the lower edge of the headlights, which also function as the turn signals.

Muscular wheel arches, optional carbon fibre roof.

Prominently flared side skirts flow into broad, muscular wheel arches to create an appearance characteristic of BMW M and inspired by motorsport. The M2’s silhouette is defined by its long hood, short overhangs, and a passenger compartment set far back. The roofline sloping down from the B-pillar and the short deck lid culminating in a pronounced lip spoiler complete the look of a compact BMW coupe with clear high-performance abilities.

Customers can specify the new BMW M2 with an M Carbon roof as an option. Using this lightweight material for the roof reduces vehicle weight and lowers the centre of gravity, enhancing handling agility.

Rear diffuser with racing authenticity.

Pronounced horizontal surfaces give the rear end of the new BMW M2 its structure. Classic hallmarks of M design include the vertically arranged reflectors set deep into the outer edges of the rear apron and a rear spoiler lip designed to generate additional downforce at the rear axle. The most striking element of the rear end is the pronounced diffuser insert. This air-directing element adopts a minimalist, racing look and incorporates signature M quad tailpipes. The tailpipes are mounted significantly inward from the edges of the rear bumper and enhance a powerfully compact rear view.

Exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels provide distinctive touches.

At introduction, the new BMW M2 will be available in two solid and three metallic exterior paint shades: Alpine White, Black Sapphire metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Toronto Red metallic, and the new Zandvoort Blue available exclusively on the new M2.

Standard on the new BMW M2 are exclusively-designed M double-spoke light-alloy wheels in a Jet Black finish; 19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear.

M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder engine, 6-speed manual gearbox.

The powertrain technology in the new BMW M2 brings elite performance to the premium compact segment and delivers an intoxicating driving experience in the style of a classic high-performance sports car. The M2 is the only model in its segment to be offered with an inline 6-cylinder engine, which impresses not only with its balanced performance characteristics, but also its superior power. The engine is paired with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a dynamic 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. In either case, the engine’s power is fed through to the road in traditional fashion via the rear wheels.

With 453 hp at 6,250 rpm, the S58 engine in the new M2 outguns the unit in its predecessor by 48 hp. It combines the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology with the high-revving character drivers have come to expect of an M car. The engine’s peak torque of 406 lb-ft is produced between 2,650 and 5,870 rpm. Urgent response, an appetite for revs, and linear power delivery into the highest reaches of the engine speed range define the performance experience in the new BMW M2. The engine revs to a maximum 7,200 rpm.

The design principle behind the engine and its technical details reflect decades of experience amassed by BMW M GmbH in motorsport. An extremely rigid crankcase, friction-optimized cylinder bores, a crankshaft drive with high torsional rigidity, and a forged crankshaft with lightweight design enhance the efficiency, power development, and high-revving nature of the engine. The core of the cylinder head is 3D printed, enabling a weight reduction and optimized coolant duct routing.

Two mono-scroll turbochargers supply compressed air to the combustion chambers. The turbocharging system also features an indirect intercooler and an electronically controlled wastegate. Other elements of M TwinPower Turbo technology include High Precision Injection with maximum pressure of over 5,000 psi, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing.

Track-spec cooling and oil supply systems, M-specific exhaust system.

The M-specific cooling system is fed fresh air through the large apertures in the front apron, and it ensures the powertrain components maintain optimal operating temperatures at all times – both in everyday use over short distances or in urban areas and during high-speed track sessions. The oil supply system is also designed to handle extreme dynamic driving situations. An oil sump with two separate chambers and an additional suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to keep lubricant flowing reliably even under high lateral and longitudinal acceleration loads.

A choice of power delivery: an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic or a six-speed manual gearbox.

The new BMW M2 is available with a six-speed manual gearbox, creating a performance experience in the classical mold, rooted in the heightened interaction between car and driver. The gear ratios and spread are perfectly matched to the performance characteristics of the engine. A precisely defined shift action enables rapid, easily executed gear changes, and the Gear Shift Assistant uses rev matching to ensure slip-free operation when downshifting. Gear Shift Assistant can be deactivated in the M Setup menu.

The standard eight-speed M Steptronic transmission is also distinguished by ratio spacing perfectly attuned to the engine’s characteristics and also offers befittingly sporty gear shifts. The broadly spread gears aid efficiency at low engine speeds while enabling an intense rush of power from low road speeds.

The transmission’s shift characteristics can be varied using the Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever, with a choice of three clearly distinguishable settings available in both automatic and manual mode. Besides a more comfort-oriented setup and a setting for sporty driving, drivers are also able to activate a track-optimized shift program.

Choosing the manual or automatic gearbox will have only a minor effect on performance. The new M2 fitted with the 6-speed manual can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds, while the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission trims that time to 4.1 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, or 285 km/h if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified.

Supreme dynamics, optimal traction: rear-wheel drive and the Active M Differential.

By sending power exclusively to the rear wheels, the new BMW M2 adheres to the traditional recipe for converting engine output into dynamic performance. When pushing hard on the track, the driver can use the linear build-up of cornering forces characteristic of M models to guide the car through corners with absolute precision.

Another contributor to the sublime dynamics of the BMW M2 is the standard Active M Differential. It can stop rotational speed compensation between the rear wheels whenever required and generate a locking effect of up to 100 percent seamlessly and variably. This optimizes traction on road surfaces offering different levels of adhesion at the left- and right- rear wheels. The differential lock ensures drive torque is not lost through slip at one or the other rear wheel but can instead be used to pull away more quickly. The Active M Differential is networked with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and adapts its locking effect precisely to the driving situation at hand, as detected by an array of sensors. Among the factors considered are drive torque, wheel speed, vehicle speed, and lateral acceleration, as well as the car’s steering angle and yaw rate. This allows the degree of lock to be adjusted very precisely and predictably for the driver. For example, when accelerating hard out of corners, drivers are given tangible feedback on the grip available at the rear wheels and can therefore apply just the right amount of throttle.

Chassis: a new dimension in agility.

Sophisticated chassis technology originally developed for the M3 an M4 endows the new M2 with the tools required to convert the power of its straight-six engine into sublime straight-line and lateral performance, both in everyday driving and on the track. At the same time, the compact dimensions, short wheelbase, excellent longitudinal and torsional stiffness of the body and chassis mountings, and a nearly 50:50 weight distribution combine to deliver precisely controllable, fingertip handling. Add classical rear-wheel drive to the mix and the result is driving pleasure of incomparable purity.

M-specific bracing and chassis components.

The torsional stiffness of the front is further increased by unique links connecting the individual spring strut towers with one another and with the nose of the vehicle and the bulkhead. Vertical braces connect the stiffening elements of the engine compartment to the front axle subframe, whose supporting base has been enlarged by the addition of an attachment point at the base of the A-pillars. The M-specific aluminum front axle subframe is given extra rigidity by a single-piece aluminum shear panel with integral sill braces. The centre and rear sections of the body incorporate model-specific C-pillar reinforcements and luggage compartment stiffening elements, together with a three-piece rear axle shear panel and a rear axle subframe with a rigid connection to the body.

The suspension on the new BMW M2 has M-specific kinematic and elastokinematic properties, which combine with the large castor and kingpin angles and the lowered roll centre to produce both dynamic handling and carefully calibrated comfort-focused attributes. The M-specific version of the double-joint spring strut front axle comprises aluminum wishbones with ball joints, an aluminum torque arm with newly developed mounting, a forged swivel bearing with a unique spring strut clamp, and lightweight wheel bearings with very high camber stability. The five-link rear axle with M-specific upgrades provides the ideal basis for direct, high-precision response in highly dynamic driving situations with its wide track and rigid mounting.

M Servotronic steering and Adaptive M Suspension as standard.

The M Servotronic steering facilitates accurate turn-in when powering through bends on the one hand and effortless parking and maneuvering on the other. It does so by combining the benefits of speed-sensitive power assistance and a variable steering ratio. There is a choice of two settings for steering response in the M Setup menu. Comfort mode combines a light steering feel with precise feedback. And in the Sport setting the steering becomes much more communicative while also increasing steering effort – for maximum precision when exploring the outer reaches of the car’s dynamic abilities.

The standard Adaptive M Suspension features electronically controlled dampers designed to maximize road contact and traction in all driving situations. The dampers are controlled with the help of sensors that constantly monitor body movements, the condition of the road, and steering adjustments. Electromagnetically controlled valves generate fully variable damping forces for each individual wheel, as required and with split-second speed. The basic damper characteristics can be altered as desired by selecting one of the three settings in the M Setup menu.

Integrated braking system with two settings for pedal feel; M light-alloy wheels measuring 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear.

The M Compound brakes on the new BMW M2 – six-piston, fixed-caliper brakes with 15-inch discs at the front, and single-piston, floating-caliper brakes with 14.6-inch discs at the rear – deliver outstanding stopping power. The calipers are painted in Blue metallic as standard, with a Red finish available as an option.

The integrated braking system erases speed with great precision. This system brings together the brake activation, brake booster, and braking control functions within a compact module. The required brake pressure is triggered quickly and precisely using an electric actuator. Here, the integrated braking system is fitted in an M-specific version that offers the driver two pedal feel settings, allowing them to choose between more comfort-oriented or very direct execution of brake pedal inputs in the M Setup menu.

New to the BMW M2 are M light-alloy wheels with a larger diameter at the rear axle than at the front. This results in more effective transmission of lateral control forces at the driven wheels, making it possible to extract even more from the M2’s dynamic handling potential. The new BMW M2 comes with 19-inch light-alloy wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the rear fitted with tires measuring 275/35 ZR19 and 285/30 ZR20 at the front and rear respectively.

M Drive Professional with M Traction Control also fitted as standard.

The inclusion of the integrated braking system enables the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system to act with even greater precision. Its range of functions includes M Dynamic Mode, which allows extra wheel slip to enhance an already sporty driving experience. The wheel slip limitation function has been integrated into the engine management on the new BMW M2. This eliminates the long signal paths to the DSC control unit, meaning that the corrective inputs are applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems and with exceptional precision. Because the near-actuator wheel slip limitation function manages any loss of traction, especially when accelerating hard or taking corners at speed, the DSC system has to intervene far less frequently to maintain composed and assured handling with selective applications of the brakes at individual wheels.

The M Traction Control system, part of the standard M Drive Professional, allows drivers to specify one of 10 stages of DSC intervention. During outings on the track, drivers can carefully reduce the extent of control system intervention in order to configure a setup for controlled drifts that is precisely tailored to both track surface conditions and their personal preferences.

Additional standard equipment and a focused menu of options.

When it comes to functionality, ergonomics, and comfort, the standard equipment features in the new BMW M2 follow the lead of its powertrain and chassis technology by placing the emphasis squarely on focused driving pleasure. The M2’s cockpit, with its driver-centric design, features M-specific displays, controls, and configurations, as well as the advanced BMW Curved Display. A focused selection of options is available for enhancing driving comfort or adding visual flourishes to both the exterior and interior, allowing owners to personalize their new BMW M2 in just the way they want.

Redesigned M Sport seats and M Carbon bucket seats.

The 2023 M2 features newly designed M Sport seats with more pronounced side bolsters. They are upholstered in Vernasca leather with perforated surfaces and can be ordered in either Black or Cognac. Their integral head restraints feature an illuminated M logo. The M Sport seats likewise come with electrical adjustment, including for the height of the head restraints.

Optional for the first time on the M2 are the track-ready M Carbon bucket seat – part of the optional Carbon Package. Fully electric and heated, they feature integral head restraints and illuminated M2 badges just above the backrest. The use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the structural elements of the seat bottom and backrest together with the cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints saves about 11 kg over the standard M Sport seats.

Customers wishing to inject more sporting style into the cabin of the new BMW M2 can opt for M interior trim in Aluminum Rhombicle Anthracite in place of the standard High-Gloss Black trim. If the optional Carbon Fibre trim is specified, the shift paddles (on automatic transmission-equipped vehicles) and trim on the M leather steering wheel will be finished in carbon fibre along with the trim on the dashboard and centre console.

There are two optional roof variants for the new BMW M2: an electrically operated glass slide/tilt moonroof offering a glass surface now larger by nearly 20 percent compared with the outgoing model, as well as a weight-reducing M Carbon roof panel.

Choosing the optional Black Exterior Contents finishes the tips of the tailpipes in black. Also available is the M Carbon Package, which bundles the aforementioned M Carbon roof, M Carbon bucket seats in Black Full Merino leather with striking contour lines finished in the BMW M tricolours around the backrests and headrests of the front seats, and carbon fibre interior trim. When equipped, the M Carbon Package also unlocks the optional Track Tires, which provide an even more extreme level of grip and precision.

Driver assistance systems for optimized comfort and safety.

A selection of advanced driver assistance systems provide comfort over long journeys and safety in unclear situations on the road. The new BMW M2 is equipped as standard with Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear, Dynamic Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, and Lane Departure Warning.

The optional Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function (optional on vehicles equipment with the M Steptronic transmission only) maintains the chosen cruising speed while also automatically keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead, with a choice of four proximity settings.

Setup button for individual configuration of powertrain and chassis.

A key feature of the M-specific control/operation concept is the Setup button in the centre console’s control panel, which provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and 10-stage M Traction Control. On models fitted with the manual transmission, the Gear Shift Assistant can also be activated and deactivated from the M Setup menu.

Two individually configured setup variants can be stored permanently, together with the preferred settings for the engine note, the DSC system, the Automatic Start/Stop function and the shift characteristics of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, if specified. The overall vehicle configuration can then be called up at any time by pressing one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

M Mode button: unadulterated performance at the push of a button.

Also located in the centre console’s control panel is the M Mode button, which opens the door to a performance experience perfectly tailored to each driver’s preferences. SPORT mode scales back the range of driver assistance system functions to a minimum. As the new BMW M2 is fitted with M Drive Professional as standard, drivers are also able to select TRACK mode. Designed purely for driving on race circuits, TRACK mode fully deactivates the assistance systems.

SPORT and TRACK modes both reduce the content shown in the information display and Head-Up Display to the information relevant to sporty driving. Various readouts can be called up on the left of the information display, including boost pressure and coolant temperature, tire pressure and tire temperature, or longitudinal and lateral acceleration.

Added fun on the track: M Laptimer, M Drift Analyzer.

As well as M Traction Control and TRACK mode, M Drive Professional also includes the M Laptimer and M Drift Analyzer functions. The M Laptimer records both the current lap time and the time difference compared with the fastest lap around the circuit during the current session.

The M Drift Analyzer helps the driver to sharpen their high-speed cornering skills using deliberate oversteer and precise counter-steering, recording the duration, distance and angle of the driver’s latest drift.

A forward-thinking user interface emphasizing touch and voice control.

The new BMW M2 also treats drivers and passengers to the latest-generation BMW user interface in the form of the standard BMW Digital Cockpit Plus. Based on BMW Operating System 8 and featuring new-generation software with powerful connectivity and data processing, it takes the interaction between the driver and vehicle into the digital future.

The new BMW iDrive system offers many more ways for drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment and communication functions, and digital services. The BMW Curved Display and the continually expanding capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant mean the system has been deliberately geared towards interaction using natural language and touch control. M-specific display content gives added impact to the design of the new BMW M2 cockpit with its emphasis on performance and focused driving pleasure.

BMW Curved Display with M content.

The standard BMW Curved Display in the new M2 cockpit is angled towards the driver, making the intuitive touch control more straightforward. It is formed by a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display.

The information display’s newly designed graphical layout and the M style content contribute to a focused, performance-led driving experience. The vehicle speed is shown on the left of the display both as a figure and as a digital scale, along with information such as the fuel gauge and the status of the driver assistance systems. The right-hand section indicates engine speed, current gear, the transmission’s Drivelogic setting, oil temperature and the setup selected with the M button on the steering wheel. The familiar M Shift Lights appear at the top of the information display, while an indicator bar along the lower edge notifies the driver of the status of the driving stability systems and traction control.

The control display provides a clear overview of the various menu options in the form of widgets on the home screen, which can be arranged to suit personal preferences. A number of special widgets are also available in the new BMW M2 containing information on the current vehicle setup, as well as tire pressure and temperature.

BMW Maps navigation system as standard, M-specific Head-Up Display as an option.

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system forms part of the standard BMW Digital Cockpit Plus. The latest generation of this navigation system enables fast route calculation based on precise real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals. The optional BMW Digital Cockpit Professional adds the Head-Up Display with M specific content.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with new skills.

The control/operation system in the new BMW M2 also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. BMW Operating System 8 unlocks additional skills for this digital assistant. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can now be used to adjust the air conditioning, for instance, or open and close the windows. Driver assistance system functions can also be controlled via voice command in the new BMW M2.

Munich. With just a few months remaining until the world premiere of the new BMW M2*, the final test phase in the development of the new high-performance car is in full swing. The new BMW M2 offers thoroughbred racing technology for the roads. In keeping with its affinity with the racetrack, the car’s driving dynamics were subjected to an intensive test at the Salzburgring in Austria.

The tests focussed on the driving dynamics and chassis, and the new BMW M2 impressed with outstanding characteristics. The new production car boasts a similar performance level to the BMW M2 CS**, the exclusive, special-edition sports car from BMW M GmbH. It allows the driver to experience that pure racetrack feeling in any conditions – even at the limit.

The power under the bonnet of the BMW M2 is provided by the tried-and-tested engines from the M3 and M4 models. The two optional transmission types, the manual 6-speed gearbox and 8-speed M Steptronic gearbox, guarantee that the power is applied extremely dynamically, redefining sheer driving pleasure. The sporty driving characteristics are intensified by the adaptive M chassis and the rear-wheel drive on the new BMW M2. The powerful brake system comes from the M3 and M4 and ensures the power is controlled effortlessly.

The sporty appearance of the new BMW M2 is rounded off by a selection of special equipment options. For example, a carbon roof to reduce weight, among other benefits. M carbon bucket seats for the driver and passenger, also available as an option, emphasise the racing look of the new BMW M2.

The world premiere of the new BMW M2 will be in October, followed by the market launch in April 2023.

Munich. With effect from 1 November, Franciscus van Meel will assume the position as chairman of the board of BMW M GmbH. He succeeds Markus Flasch, who, after three years at the helm of the BMW Group subsidiary responsible for particularly sporty automobiles, will be changing to the Overall Vehicle Development division. Flasch will assume the position within the BMW Group as head of the production lines Rolls-Royce, BMW luxury and upper class, in future also including the BMW midrange production line. During his term of office in the executive board of BMW M GmbH, the company rose to become the world’s leading provider of performance and high-performance-automobiles.

For Franciscus van Meel it is a return to the chief executive position at the top of BMW M GmbH. Between 2015 and 2018, he had already led the company, which bears the status of an independent automobile manufacturer. In the meantime, van Meel has also been, inter alia, responsible for the Rolls-Royce product line as well as for the BMW luxury and upper class. Under his leadership, the BMW Group’s new technology flagship, the BMW iX, was brought to series-production readiness. Van Meel also headed development of the forthcoming purely electrically powered model variants. With this experience in hand, he brings along the ideal prerequisites to also shape the next stages already commenced on the way to electrification at the BMW M GmbH. The first highlight of van Meel’s second term of office has already been fixed: 2022 will witness the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the company - originally founded as BMW Motorsport GmbH - during which many new high-performance automobiles will be presented. These will also include the first BMW M3 Touring, which is already in an advanced stage of its series development process.

During the past three years, BMW M GmbH has been influenced by an unparalleled model offensive. The list of innovations with which BMW M GmbH was able to achieve new record sales figures and assume market leadership ahead of competitors included the extended range of performance automobiles and new versions of the model series BMW M3 and BMW M4, which represent the core of the BMW M brand, as well as the absolute top-of-the-range models in their segment, the BMW M2 CS (fuel consumption combined: 10.1 – 9.2 l/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions combined: 229 – 210 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW M5 CS (fuel consumption combined: 11.3 l/100 km according to WLTP, CO2 emissions combined: 256 g/km according to WLTP). The latest new model, the purely electrically powered BMW M automobile, the BMW i4 M50 (power consumption combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/100 km according to WLTP, CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km), has now been brought to market.

At the same time, the BMW M company’s commitment as a car manufacturer and in motorsport was recently again more closely interlinked. This was accompanied by the realignment of motorsport activities, new and particularly attractive customer sport offerings and the decision on BMW’s comeback in international prototype racing, which has been planned for 2023.

Munich. With yet another new sales record, the BMW M GmbH continued to grow also in the 2020 fiscal year. Despite the effects of the Corona pandemic on the market, it was possible to increase the number of BMW M automobiles sold by 6 percent to 144,218 units. Thanks to this result, the subsidiary company of the BMW Group with the status of an independent company has significantly strengthened its market leadership within the competitive environment first gained in 2019. “The fact that we were able to conclude this exceptionally challenging year with yet a further record is great validation of our consistent growth strategy,” says Markus Flasch, chairman of the board of the BMW M GmbH. “We can be particularly proud of the fact that we were able not only to defend our market dominance as the most successful provider of performance and high-performances automobiles, but also to have even expanded it.”

The further increase in sales figures was due, inter alia, to the successful market launch of the models BMW X5 M (combined fuel consumption: 13.1 – 12.6 l/100 km according to WLTP, 13.0 – 12.8 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 298 – 287 g/km according to WLTP, 296 – 287 g/km according to NEDC) and BMW X6 M (combined fuel consumption: 13.4 – 13.1 l/100 km according to WLTP, 13.1 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 305 – 300 g/km according to WLTP, 301 g/km according to NEDC). With V8 power units delivering up to 460 kW/625 hp, BMW M automobiles from the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupe segment offer a particularly characteristic high-performance experience. Likewise, the special edition model BMW M2 CS (combined fuel consumption: 10.1 – 9.2 l/100 km according to WLTP, 10.4 – 9.4 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 229 – 210 g/km according to WLTP, 238 – 214 g/km according to NEDC), which serves as the basis for a new competition vehicle from BMW Motorsport, has also received a positive response. In the high-performance model sector alone, it was possible to increase the number of worldwide deliveries by 4 percent vs. the year 2019.

Moreover, it was predominantly the performance automobiles developed for the new BMW 3 Series and the new BMW 4 Series that helped boost the sales of the BMW M GmbH so decisively. With powerful straight six-cylinder petrol and diesel power plants, specific suspension tuning and stand-alone design features, the top-of-the-range offer for the BMW 3 Series Sedan, the BMW 3 Series Touring and the BMW 4 Series Coupe also guarantees that characteristic M experience in the premium mid-range segment, coupled with unrestricted suitability for everyday use and long distances.

Growing demand in all relevant markets.

Technology transferred from motor racing, precisely coordinated features in the areas of drive systems, suspension, aerodynamics, interior design and operation as well as the resulting authentic character of BMW M automobiles, create a fascination, which continued in 2020 to captivate an increasing number of performance-oriented customers throughout the world. For example, in the USA, the most important market for BMW M automobiles, as well as in China, new records were achieved. In both Russia and Korea, it was possible to increase sales by more than 60 percent, and in Italy by 47 percent. And in the UK, too, the number of vehicles delivered exceeded our expectations. “We notice a steadily growing demand in all relevant markets for BMW M automobiles,” explains Thomas Felbermair, head of Sales and Marketing at BMW M GmbH. “Because of this and thanks to the engagement of our strong dealer network, we have been outstandingly successful in coping with the challenges posed by the pandemic.”

Ready to go: BMW M5 CS, BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe.

Looking towards the future, the initial focus shifts to the world premiere of the BMW M5 CS, which will take place in January 2021. A special edition of the BMW M5 will then be available for the first time – with outstanding performance and exclusive motorsport characteristics. Following that, the main focus will be on the market launch of the new BMW M3 Sedan starting in March 2021 (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 – 10.3 l/100 km according to WLTP, 10.8 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 241 – 236 g/km according to WLTP, 248 g/km according to NEDC) and the new BMW M4 Coupe (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 – 10.3 l/100 km according to WLTP, 10.8 l/100 km according to NEDC; combined CO₂ emissions: 240 –  235 g/km according to WLTP, 248 g/km according to NEDC). The two high-performance automobiles represent the essence of that unmistakable M feeling. Immediately after their world premiere, the new model generation aroused keen interest around the globe.

In future, the wishes of the M Community will be fulfilled by extraordinary diversity: Each variant with classic manual shift will be complemented by a Competition model featuring an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Moreover, in the summer of 2021, the four-wheel drive system M xDrive will be added for the first time to the drive portfolio for the BMW M3 and the BMW M4. And the BMW M4 Convertible will also be launched in time for the warm season. On the other hand, the first BMW M3 Touring is still undergoing the series development process.

A glance into the future: continued growth, new M feeling through electrification, and an anniversary. 

“It is remarkable that it was possible to achieve the new sales record even before the launch of our most important models,” says Markus Flasch. “The new BMW M3 and BMW M4 generation offers us the promise of dynamic growth in 2021 as well.” Moreover, he now also looks forward to presenting a completely new manifestation of the distinctive M feeling. Electrification will provide the basis for this. During the year 2021, the BMW M GmbH will be presenting an electrically powered performance automobile for the first time.

With this setting of agenda with which the “Power of Choice” strategy has been realised within the model range of the BMW M GmbH, and an exceptionally strong product range, the company is heading full of optimism for the forthcoming anniversary year. 2022 will be the year in which the BMW M GmbH celebrates 50 years of its existence. Markus Flasch has already announced “a year full of surprises”: “If I mention the keyword special edition models, it should be clear what our customers can look forward to during the anniversary year.”

BMW M as contemporary art – in the wake of the further development of BMW Individual, the BMW M GmbH will be presenting its latest collaboration: a multi-tiered project with eminent international contemporary artist FUTURA 2000; the partnership will debut at Frieze Los Angeles 2020. In this collaboration, FUTURA 2000, who is known for his mastery of color, concentric forms, and kinetic composition, will create three exclusive and unique versions of the BMW M2 Competition (combined fuel consumption: 10.0 l/100 km; combine CO2 emissions: 227 g/km) in his unmistakable style, whilst also designing a limited-edition of the BMW M2 Competition which is scheduled for public purchase in June 2020. One of the hand-painted BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000 vehicles will celebrate its world premiere at the second Frieze Los Angeles—being held at the Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood from 13 to 16 February.

“The BMW M2 Competition is dynamic, extroverted and, to a certain degree, pleasantly provocative. I consider it a great honour to be able to add a special touch to this vehicle,” says FUTURA 2000. Markus Flasch, CEO BMW M GmbH, adds:  "We are very proud of having been able to gain such an internationally well-known artist as FUTURA 2000 for the collaboration on the three unique one-offs of the  BMW M2 Competition. The artist will work extensively on the three unique versions of the BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000 both on the exterior and in the interior. The limited-production models will also bear his unique signature. The trim strips on the instrument panel and the centre console of each vehicle boast a special, individually created FUTURA 2000 design. The bi-coloured, Dakota leather M sports seats in black and ivory white feature polar blue contrast stitching. In addition, the interior package includes an M Alcantara leather-clad sports steering wheel with a grey 12 o’clock marking and special door sill trims bearing the consecutive limited-edition number and a Futura signature. From the outside, the BMW M2 Edition designed by FUTURA 2000* is recognisable by the painted surfaces on the front and rear aprons and the side sills. Moreover, each car is fitted with 19-inch jet black light alloy wheels.

Frieze Los Angeles joined Frieze New York, Frieze London and Frieze Masters at the forefront of the international art fair calendar last year, celebrating Los Angeles’ position as a global arts center and destination. The annual contemporary art fair features around 70 L.A.-based and international galleries, alongside a site-specific program of talks, music and commissioned artist projects organized in collaboration with leading curators. Frieze Los Angeles is led by Victoria Siddall, Director, Frieze Fairs, and Bettina Korek, Executive Director, Frieze Los Angeles.

In celebration of their long-term partnership, BMW partners with Frieze to present Frieze Music, co-curated by writer and curator Kevin McGarry and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries London, in association with NeueHouse. The event will feature Moses Sumney, Caroline Polachek, Zsela as well as DJ Uwuqi and takes place on Friday, 14 February, at 9 p.m. at NeueHouse Hollywood.

Soho House and BMW i will host an art talk on Wednesday, 12 February, where contemporary artist FUTURA 2000 and rapper Lupe Fiasco will talk about “Sights and Sounds”, moderated by writer Arty Nelson. The partnership will debut at Frieze Los Angeles 2020. In this collaboration, FUTURA 2000, who is known for his mastery of colour, concentric forms, and kinetic composition, will create three exclusive and unique versions of the BMW M2 Competition (combined fuel consumption: 10.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 227 g/km) in his unmistakable style, whilst also designing a limited-edition series of the BMW M2 Competition which is scheduled for public purchase in June 2020. One of the hand-painted BMW M2 by Futura vehicles will celebrate its world premiere at the second Frieze Los Angeles – being held at the Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood from 13 to 16 February.

An eye-catching digital campaign presents the BMW M2 Competition (combined fuel consumption: 10.0 – 9.8 l/100 km [9.2-9.0]; combined CO2 emissions: 227 – 224 g/km [209-206]*) as a record breaker with very unusual tools: a high-power laser and a precision blade. The impressive films will be shown in BMW and BMW M social media channels.

The BMW M2 Competition is out to break records. To deliver on this promise, the BMW M2 is drawing inspiration from world records set by humans. At first glance, these appear to have nothing to do with cars: cutting through more than 87 straw mats with a blade within a minute and popping over 63 balloons in 60 seconds with a laser beam.

For these spectacular challenges – attempted for the first time worldwide – a slightly modified BMW M2 Competition was brought to Cape Town. It comes with the same technology as the series-production vehicle, plus the additional features required for attempting the records: a high-energy laser installed into the front of the vehicle and a blade attached to the rear.

Following meticulous planning and testing, the course was set out and everything was ready: Rolled-up bamboo mats were arranged in semi-circles so that they could be cut by the blade on a drift; the balloons were set up in long straight lines angled sharply towards each other for quick turns. Fans will instantly recognise the shape of the letter M, the most powerful letter in the world.

Behind the scenes:

Technically, the BMW M2 Competition already has everything it takes to be a genuine record-breaker: At its core is a new engine based on the power unit used in the BMW M3 and BMW M4. The inline six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo Technology produces 410 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds.  For the first time, BMW M2 drivers will be able to use two selector switches in the central console to directly adjust various characteristics and settings for the engine, steering and Drivelogic functions, if M DCT is available. Optically, the BMW M2 Competition also shows its most expressive side: The revised front apron with a bigger, redesigned high-gloss black BMW kidney grille and the exclusive new Hockenheim Silver metallic finish give the BMW M2 Competition an even stronger presence.

“This is a very tricky bit of driving, it is virtually impossible,” says stunt coordinator Marc Higgins, talking about the set-up. “The demands on the BMW M2 Competition are immense. Every drift has to be performed with absolute precision; there is no room for error. A strong presence and agility naturally help a lot.”

“This challenge is now reaching its finale, after months of preparation. The driver is an expert in his field, but he needs the car to respond precisely to the slightest feedback from him. If the car does not respond, we will not break this record,” explained director Oison Tymon.

And the BMW M2 Competition kept its promises: Despite the complexity of the challenge, the high-performance sports car broke both records. After just a few attempts, 117 bamboo mats were cut and 79 balloons burst – both in precisely one minute.

To proof the authenticity of the stunts, real-time drone footage was captured of the BMW M2 Competition performing the stunts.

The BMW M2 Competition’s record-breaking attempts are part of the “Same street. Different game.” launch campaign and fit the tonality of the campaign perfectly. The extroverted motifs also reference the world of gaming, with high scores and record-breaking runs. That makes sense: From the start of communications, millions of fans worldwide were able to experience the new BMW M2 Competition virtually, within just a few hours of its world premiere at the Beijing Motor Show, in the popular mobile racing game CSR Racing 2.

Richmond Hill, ON. Canada will see an increase of BMW M2 production in response to strong demand for high-performance vehicles. As one of the top BMW M markets in the world, BMW Canada has secured additional M2 volume of 10 per cent to satisfy enthusiasts across the country. This represents an addition of 50 units to the originally planned volume.

“As a percentage of total sales, Canada is the second-largest BMW M market in the world,” says Kevin Marcotte, national manager for BMW M. “The BMW M2 started generating excitement when it was only rumoured to be going into production. It has more than lived up to the anticipation since its first test drive, so to support our M2 fans, we requested additional vehicles.”

The BMW M2 was named 2017 Best New Premium Sports Performance Car after rigorous testing at the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s Testfest in October of 2016. It was subsequently nominated as a finalist for the overall 2017 Canadian Car of the Year award, and has earned additional awards around the world, as well.

Equipped with a race-bred 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine with direct injection, variable camshaft timing and variable valve lift control, and an output of 365 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, the M2 is capable of 0-100 km/h sprints in just 4.3 seconds. Nürburgring-tested high-performance compound brakes, lightweight suspension components, perfectly balanced weight distribution and fully variable differential control all contribute to benchmark-setting agility, directional stability and controllability at the limit, providing the M2 with perfect composure both on the track and in everyday driving. Furthermore, it offers No-Charge Scheduled Maintenance* to ensure each M2 remains in peak condition for the ultimate driving experience.

Richmond Hill, ON.  The Automobile Journalists Associate of Canada (AJAC) today named the BMW M2 the Best New Premium Sports Performance Car.  After testing the vehicle’s mettle against its competitors, the organization determined that the six-cylinder powerhouse reigned supreme.  Among the evaluation criteria were performance traits such as throttle response and engine and transmission performance, as well as vehicle dynamics attributes such as steering, handling and braking.  Acceleration and many other objective data points were also captured, with the results placing the BMW M2 at the top of the pack.

BMW, one of the world’s most successful premium carmakers, also boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.
BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner, further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i “Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability. This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts, and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

Just like its predecessor high revs and M TwinPower.

With an output of 365 hp at 6,500 rpm and maximum revs of 7,000 rpm this all-new BMW M2 is more powerful than its predecessor: the BMW 1 M Coupe. The 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine in the new BMW M2 sends out a clear message to the high-performance sports car segment. The engine’s peak torque also leads the way in this segment; a full 343 lb-ft is on tap between 1,400 and 5,560 rpm, with the overboost function raising this figure by 26 lb-ft to 369 lb-ft between 1,450 and 4,750 rpm. A glance to the past will put things into perspective, this figure is more than 70 lb-ft of additional torque than the past generation M3, ensuring plenty of torque is available in all driving situations.

With the optional M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) in place and Launch Control activated, the new BMW M2 completes the sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in a scant 4.3 seconds (4.5 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox).

 The all-new BMW M2’s newly developed 3.0 liter 6-cylinder engine represents a symbiosis of exceptional output and outstanding efficiency. The lightweight, thermodynamically optimized, all-aluminum unit is extremely rigid due to its closed-deck design – which means that the cylinder water jacket is closed at the top. This enables higher cylinder pressures for improved power output and torque.

State-of-the-art M TwinPower Turbo technology.

The all-new BMW M2 comes with the latest generation of the trailblazing M TwinPower Turbo technology. In the new 6-cylinder inline gasoline engine, this comprises a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Direct Injection, variable camshaft timing (Double-VANOS) and VALVETRONIC variable valve lift control.

 Optimized to meet the highest standards and in order to satisfy the high expectations of sporty drivers who like to push the limits on the track, the BMW M GmbH development engineers have introduced upgrades to the engine powering the all-new BMW M2. This engine has gained selected components from the high-performance unit used in the BMW M3 and BMW M4 presented in 2014. Components including the pistons, with their top ring optimized for the use of grey-cast iron liners, are sourced from the BMW M3 and M4 engine, as are the crankshaft main bearing shells. The new engine in the BMW M2 is equipped with the requisite high-performance spark plugs designed to optimally work at higher temperatures.

 The integration of the turbocharger into the exhaust manifold plays a major role in the ability of the new 3.0 liter 6-cylinder engine in the all-new BMW M2 to optimize its performance efficiently. The warm-up phase after a cold start is noticeably shorter reducing exhaust emissions. The electrically operated boost pressure control valve and close-loop arrangement of the catalytic converter further improve the engine’s emissions rating.

The standard Auto Start Stop function and Brake Energy Regeneration provide additional potential for fuel savings in the all-new BMW M2, while the intelligent energy management of ancillary components enables an additional reduction in fuel consumption. For example, the coolant pump operates only as required and the oil pump is map-controlled. The air conditioning compressor, which is disconnected whenever it is not being used, and the Electric Power Steering, which requires no electric energy when driving straight ahead, make a considerable contribution to the laudable fuel consumption and emissions figures of the all-new BMW M2.

 Oil supply secure even during track days.

The many years of motor racing experience built up by the BMW M engineers are also reflected in the oil supply for the all-new BMW M2 engine. In order to ensure oil reaches all engine components at all times under limit-pushing driving with sustained heavy lateral acceleration, and extreme braking maneuvers the car has to withstand on the race track, the 6-cylinder inline engine benefits from a modified oil sump.

For example, an additional oil sump cover helps to limit the movement of oil under powerful acceleration. At the same time, an extra oil suction pump sends the oil back to the rear part of the oil sump when the driver brakes heavily. A special suction system is employed for the oil supply to the turbocharger under higher vehicle acceleration. This measure ensures that the oil supply to the engine remains secure at all times, both in normal everyday driving and when lateral dynamics are put to the test at the track.

The same also applies to the heat balance of all engine components. In order to deal with extreme cooling requirements under hard driving, the BMW M2 engine benefits from an additional oil cooler for the transmission oil (only applies to cars fitted with M DCT) and an extra water radiator for the engine.

Perfectly composed high-revving M exhaust note.

One of the main contributors to the extraordinary dynamic experience on board the all-new BMW M2 is the optimized exhaust with special flap system. With its four tailpipes, the exhaust system immediately marks the BMW M2 out as a BMW M model and its minimal exhaust back-pressure ensures the engine exhales optimally. The electrically controlled flap delivers the distinctive BMW M engine exhaust note across the entire rev range. In addition, drivers can use the Driving Dynamic Control switch to select a driving mode and an exhaust note to go with it.

Manual gearbox with automatic rev-matching.

The all-new BMW M2 comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, which stands out with its compact design and low weight. The use of a new type of carbon-fiber friction lining enhances shift precision. Dry-sump lubrication prevents any sloshing of the transmission oil and ensures all components benefit from an efficient supply of lubricant. An engagement speed control function, which blips the throttle on downshifts and lowers the engine’s revs on upshifts, makes gear changes even smoother and lends the car additional stability during hard driving on the track. Experienced drivers can still take pride in performing the task of perfectly orchestrated down-shifts on their own by deactivating the system in DSC OFF mode.

 Motorsport inspired - flawless shifts in a split-second.

The all-new BMW M2 can be ordered as an option with the latest generation of the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmissions (M DCT with Drivelogic). This system, which effectively combines two gearboxes, each with its own clutch, is specially designed to work with the customary engine dynamics of M cars and the engine’s high torque and output. The system detects which gear the driver will choose next based on the engine’s revs, the accelerator position, the level of acceleration and the driving mode, and engages it before the driver has actually moved the shift paddle. As a result, the clutches now only need to open or close for the gear-change process to be completed. The change of gear is therefore executed in fractions of a second. Depending on the driving mode activated, it enables either extremely fast gear changes with no interruption in the flow of power or ultra-smooth shifts. The extra gear of the M DCT transmission over the six-speed manual gearbox allows for tightly spaced gearing and reduced fuel consumption thanks to its taller gear ratios.

 The driver can change gears either in automated mode or manually using the M gearshift lever on the center console or shift paddles on the M leather steering wheel. The Drivelogic function tuned to the M Double Clutch Transmission offers a choice of six driving programs (three in automatic mode and three in manual mode).

  Optimal acceleration in all conditions.

The integrated Launch Control function ensures the best possible acceleration off the line in all conditions. This function determines the ideal getaway rpm and is automatically dialed in priming the clutches to deliver maximum forward momentum. Once under way, upshifts are timed and performed at the optimal revs. This allows the BMW M2 with innovative M DCT to outperform the already outstanding acceleration achievable with the six-speed manual gearbox.

  Dynamic Performance - Motorsport technology for the road.

The roots of BMW M GmbH lie in motor racing, as is highlighted in no small measure by the dynamic talent of all BMW M models. The all-new BMW M2 also sets the pace in its segment when it comes to agility, driving feeling, directional stability, steering precision and controllability at the limit, without any compromise in everyday use.

Lightweight design and precise wheel location.

The basic requirement for a top-level driving dynamics vehicle is a high level of rigidity and a low axle system weight with reduced unsprung mass. That’s why the BMW M GmbH engineers have referred back to the lightweight aluminum front and rear axles of the BMW M3 and M4 models for the all-new BMW M2. The control arms, wheel carriers, axle subframes and stiffening plate of the double-joint spring-strut front axle weigh 5 kg less than would be the case with a conventional steel construction. Further weight savings are provided by use of aluminum in the suspension struts and tubular anti-roll bar.

 In order to ensure extremely precise wheel location, play-free ball joints are used to transmit transverse forces. A stiffening plate in the underbody provides additional bolted connection between the axle subframe and the body sills, which increases the stiffness of the front-end structure. The longitudinal forces passing through the suspension are transmitted directly via special elastomer bearings delivering precise handling feedback.

 All the control arms and wheel carriers of the all-new BMW M2’s five-link rear axle are made from forged aluminum, which reduces the unsprung masses of the wheel-locating components by more than 6 pounds compared to a steel construction. In addition, a racing-derived rigid connection, without rubber bushings, is used to fix the lightweight steel grid-type rear axle subframe to the body. This further improves wheel location and tracking stability. The axle kinematics – which govern the movement of the wheels under compression according to the arrangement of the control arms – are similarly tuned to deliver the precise wheel location typical from M cars.

Made-to-measure wheels and tires.

In order to transfer the car’s dynamic potential to the road as effectively as possible, the development of specific tires for the all-new BMW M2 was incorporated into the axle construction from the beginning of its development. BMW M vehicle dynamic engineers know that a certain set of factors take priority whenever dealing with high-performance sports cars. For example, the front wheels have to cope with different types of forces in terms of lateral stability, directional stability while providing optimal steering feedback and steering precision. Likewise, the rear wheels deliver optimal traction, lateral stability and directional stability. After thorough testing development, the BMW M vehicle dynamic engineers decided to fit the all-new BMW M2 with aluminum wheels with mixed-size tires.

The lightweight 19-inch forged wheels (front axle: 9J x 19, rear axle 10J x 19) substantially reduce rotating and unsprung masses. Together with the exclusive 19-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires measuring 245/35 ZR 19 in the front and 265/35 ZR 19 at the rear. This set-up makes a considerable contribution to the outstanding dynamic properties of the all-new BMW M2 and, at the same time, ensure impressive everyday ride comfort.

 Motor sport inspired, Nürburgring tested – high performance brakes.

The high-performance brakes of the all-new BMW M2 are also a product of motor sport and can be quickly identified by their brake calipers – front axle: four-piston fixed calipers, rear axle: two-piston fixed calipers – which are painted in a blue metallic finish and display the M logo at the front axle. In these M compound brakes the perforated and inner-vented brake disc ring is made from grey-cast iron for a massive 15 inch diameter rotor at the front axle and equally impressive 14.5 inch diameter at the rear axle.

 M compound brakes guarantee powerful deceleration in all conditions and providing confidence inspiring fade resistance under hard track use. They are also significantly lighter than conventional braking systems, the brake disc hub is manufactured from aluminum as they reduce unsprung and rotating masses, which means they play a major role in further enhancing the dynamic ability of the all-new BMW M2.

 M developed Electric Power Steering.

The Electric Power Steering of the all-new BMW M2 also instills the characteristic M driving feeling. The development of the system prioritized hallmark M attributes, such as direct steering feel, precise feedback in both the track and everyday driving, transmitting to the driver all the necessary information about the available grip at the tires. The integrated Servotronic function with M-specific characteristics, controls the level of steering assistance electronically according to the car’s speed. Via the Driving Dynamic Control switch the driver can adjust the steering’s power assistance at any time.

 Unlike conventional hydraulic steering systems, the all-new BMW M2’s Electric Power Steering does not require any energy when the car is being driven in a straight line or standing still with the engine running, enabling an improvement in fuel economy.

 Permanent, fully variable differential control.

The Active M Differential in the all-new BMW M2 optimizes traction and maximizes directional stability. This electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential takes traction and directional stability to a new level. The multi-plate limited-slip differential is proactively controlled with extremely high precision and speed. The locking effect can be varied between 0 and 100 percent according to the driving situation. Sensors including those of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system determine the car’s steering angle, accelerator position, brake pressure, engine torque, wheel speed and yaw rate. The control unit analyzes these inputs to detect any threat of traction loss on one side of the car and calculates the required locking effect, which is engaged by an electric motor. Full locking power of 1,843 lb-ft is available within 150 ms, allowing the system to prevent a wheel from spinning in extreme conditions on slippery road surfaces or when the two rear wheels are experiencing significant differences in friction coefficient.

 In certain situations the Active M Differential even works proactively. When pulling away on slippery surfaces, the lock is closed by a defined percentage even before a wheel can start to spin, to ensure that both wheels develop equal slip at the same time. This optimizes traction and stability. The lock is also closed by the required percentage through enthusiastically driven corners, according to the levels of lateral and longitudinal acceleration. This prevents the low-traction inside wheel from starting to slip too quickly.

The permanent and infinitely variable differential control also increases agility, avoids understeer at turn-in and improves directional stability under braking and load changes.
