Continued growth for performance cars: BMW M GmbH marks 14th consecutive record year.

Munich. BMW M GmbH once again achieved outstanding sales growth in 2025. For no less than the 14th time in a row, the manufacturer of high-performance and performance vehicles reported record sales. And for the 7th time running, BMW M GmbH vehicles outsold their competitors by a considerable margin. A sales total of 213,457 vehicles surpassed the previous year’s excellent result (206,582 vehicles) by three per cent. Both the high-performance and performance models set new benchmarks. Keys to success in all markets are a state-of-the-art model range spanning many vehicle classes and an extensive portfolio of powertrain options. In 2025, nearly every tenth BMW sold was a BMW M model. This share of 9.8 per cent represents another milestone.

“Our 14th consecutive sales record validates our strategy. We will continue to offer performance and high-performance vehicles across the entire BMW model range. With fully electric, partly electric and all-ICE powertrains,” says Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH.

High-performance executive models drive growth.
The high-performance models from BMW M GmbH combine racetrack capabilities with unrestricted everyday usability. BMW M5 models became key growth drivers in 2025. The BMW M5 Sedan (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 17.6–17.2 kWh/100 km and 5.0–4.8 l/100 km (WLTP); CO₂ emissions, weighted, combined: 114–108 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ classes: with discharged battery G, weighted, combined C; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.7–10.5 l/100 km (WLTP))*^,1 and the BMW M5 Touring (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 18.1–17.6 kWh/100 km and 5.3–5.0 l/100 km (WLTP); CO₂ emissions, weighted, combined: 119–114 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ classes: with discharged battery G, weighted, combined D–C; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.9–10.7 l/100 km (WLTP))*^,1 saw enormous sales increases in their first full year on the markets, making them key contributors to the success of BMW M GmbH. Both vehicles offer a model-specific version of the M HYBRID system with a peak output of 535 kW/727 hp and a maximum system torque of 1,000 Nm. A high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor combine with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission to provide power to the M xDrive all-wheel drive system. The great appeal of the BMW M5 Touring was underscored by a “Golden Steering Wheel” award. This accolade is awarded by “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag”, both published by the German Axel Springer SE publishing house. The high-performance model achieved the highest points score of all finalists in the competition. Moreover, the distinguished jury rated the BMW M5 Touring ahead of the other class finalists in all driving disciplines, as well as in terms of efficiency and value for money.

The BMW M2 Coupé (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2–9.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–221 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)* was the best-selling high-performance vehicle of 2025. This model is also available with a manual transmission (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2–9.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–221 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)* and as an even more track-focused BMW M2 CS special model (fuel consumption, combined: 10.0 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 226 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*. This delivers 390 kW/530 hp of power and recently set a new record time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nürburgring.

Favourite among performance enthusiasts: the BMW M3 family.
The BMW M3 models are another family of high-performance best-sellers. The series impresses with perfectly tailored model variants and includes sedans with various output levels. The BMW M3 entry-level model is a particularly purist vehicle that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and 353 kW/480 hp of power (fuel consumption, combined: 10.1 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–229 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*. Then there are the extremely popular Touring variants. 2025 also saw the launch of the BMW M3 CS Touring (fuel consumption, combined: 10.5 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 238 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*, the most sporting exemplar with 405 kW/551 hp. The large number of BMW M3 family sales is a clear sign of the model series’ continued allure and represents a major contribution to the new record of almost 71,500 high-performance vehicles sold.

M Performance model is BMW M GmbH best-seller.
A particularly popular model and also the best-selling BMW M GmbH vehicle of 2025 was the BMW X3 M50 (fuel consumption, combined: 8.3 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 189 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ class: G)*. The top athlete in the premium mid-size SAV segment offers unique performance capabilities and a charismatic appearance. The M TwinPower Turbo engine, combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, delivers a maximum system output of 293 kW/398 hp. The power of the BMW X3 M50 is complemented by specific chassis technology and signature M design elements. With these attributes, it overtook the BMW i4 and its M60 Gran Coupé xDrive variant (energy consumption, combined (WLTP): 20.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined (WLTP): 0 g/km, CO₂ class: A)*, which delivers an output of 442 kW/601 hp and a range of up to 551 km. The electric BMW i4 range-topper was the best-selling BMW M GmbH model from 2022 to 2024.

In 2025, nearly every tenth BMW sold was a BMW M model, and the sales share of 9.8 per cent (9.4 per cent in the year prior) represents another new record. BMW M vehicles are especially popular in Switzerland, where nearly every fourth BMW ordered is a BMW M model.

Exceptional sales total, top spots in the individual markets.
In the key markets, BMW M GmbH vehicles led the field, beating their competitors by a considerable margin. The models were particularly coveted in the U.S., the largest single market at over 72,000 units sold. But BMW M models also achieved top positions in markets such as Canada, Germany, Korea, South Africa and the United Kingdom. In China, BMW M GmbH achieved its largest absolute sales increase.

Focused model strategy to secure and expand top position.
The state-of-the-art model portfolio with its comprehensive range of ICE, plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles is at the heart of BMW M GmbH success. The development of models based on the Neue Klasse will provide further momentum. “Our strategy of being open towards new technologies once again paid off in 2025. BMW M GmbH stands for optimal performance, independently of the powertrain type. In all markets and across all vehicle classes. Customers looking for a performance or high-performance vehicle will always find it at BMW M GmbH”, says Sylvia Neubauer, Vice President Customer, Brand, Sales at BMW M GmbH.

Motorsport remains a key pillar at BMW M GmbH.
The BMW M Motorsport race cars – the BMW M Hybrid V8, the BMW M4 GT3 EVO and the BMW M4 GT4 EVO – achieved a total of more than 180 victories in 2025. In works motorsport, the BMW M Hybrid V8 delivered a competitive performance in the first half of the FIA WEC season and the BMW M GmbH marks 14th consecutive record year. The best result of a season marked by highs and lows was the 1-2 finish at Road America. The BMW M4 GT3 EVO had a tremendous season. While the 1-2 victory at the Bathurst 12 Hour race in Australia was still won by the predecessor model, the EVO version seamlessly continued the series with top results. Triumphs at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (Germany), the Suzuka 1000 (Japan), the Indianapolis 8 Hour race and in the GTD Pro Class at the 6 Hours of the Glen and the Petit Le Mans (both U.S.) are among the highlights of a season that saw over 80 victories and 100 further podium finishes.

Teams driving the BMW M4 GT4 EVO achieved over 100 victories in the 2025 season. More than any other model, the BMW M4 GT4 is associated with customer racing. The victory in the SP10 at the Nürburgring 24 Hours was a particular high point. In the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) racing series, these vehicles came out on top in nine out of ten races. Moreover, the BMW M4 GT4 EVO triumphed in all classes at the GT4 America. The strong results of the GT4 teams helped BMW M Motorsport secure the SRO manufacturers’ title in the GT4 segment. The 2026 season will see the debut of the BMW M2 Racing as a new entry-level vehicle complementing the model portfolio for customer racing.

BMW model updates, summer 2025.

Munich. Summer 2025 is set to bring innovations in electric drive technology and digitalisation as well as new standard and optional equipment features that will make the current BMW model range even more attractive. New power electronics in the all-electric BMW i4 result in even greater efficiency and increased range. The most powerful BMW i4 will also debut at the same time. Numerous BMW models will come as standard with Comfort Access and the BMW Digital Key, which has now become even easier to set up.

From summer 2025, the BMW X1 and BMW X2 will be available with new exterior and interior options. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant now offers an alternative voice.

BMW i4: reduced consumption, new range-topper with extra power.

From July 2025, the BMW i4 eDrive35 as well as the BMW i4 eDrive40 will come with silicon carbide semiconductor components in the power electronics (SiC inverter), which reduce consumption by around 4.5 per cent while adding up to 22 kilometres of range (depending on the model and equipment installed as part of an individual vehicle configuration).

From July 2025, the new range topper for the all-electric BMW i4 comes in the shape of the BMW i4 M60 xDrive. Compared to the predecessor, it provides an additional 42 kW/57 hp of power, for a system output of 442 kW/601 hp. The new BMW i4 M60 xDrive takes 3.7 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h.

BMW Digital Key: smartphone used as key enables many additional functions.

The BMW Digital Key will soon become the tool of choice to unlock and lock many BMW models, courtesy of a simplified set-up process. The BMW iX was the first to be updated in March 2025, and many model series will follow from July 2025: the BMW X1, BMW X2, BMW 5 Series Sedan, BMW M5, BMW M5 Touring and BMW 7 Series. The BMW X5, BMW X5 M, BMW X6, BMW X6 M, BMW X7 and BMW XM models will follow from August 2025. The BMW X3 will come with the new set-up process in the US from August 2025 and in South Africa from September 2025.

The feature will then include a physical key, a Setup Card and a Service Card. The new Setup Card makes it easier than ever to set up the BMW Digital Key on smartphones from all major manufacturers by simply holding the card to the mobile phone or scanning the QR code on the back. The next step takes the user straight into the My BMW app. After authorisation via the Setup Card, the BMW ID is linked to the vehicle and the BMW Digital Key is then activated. After activation, the customer can easily share the Digital Key with other people by sending them a text message. Activation is possible on up to 18 devices. Owners can define various roles and permissions for each vehicle user. A particularly useful function ideal for novice drivers is limiting acceleration and top speed, for example. If a physical key does need to be handed over, for example in the workshop or in the event of a breakdown, the new Service Card can be used. This should always be carried deactivated so it can be activated as a fully-fledged key when needed, via a click on the central display.

For all eventualities: tyre repair kit and tyre repair kit Plus.

From summer 2025, the tyre repair kit will come as standard for various BMW models. These include the BMW 2 Series Coupé, BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW 3 Series Touring, BMW 4 Series Coupé and the BMW 4 Series Convertible. The optional tyre repair kit Plus is available for the BMW X3.

Individual paintwork finishes at a glance, in the BMW Configurator.

Customers appreciate the BMW Individual paintwork colours as a way to add a personal touch to their new BMW. Special paintwork finishes which previously required looking up in the BMW Individual Visualiser can be selected within the BMW Configurator. With just a few exceptions, this applies to all BMW models.

BMW BEV models: free extended warranty for high-voltage batteries.

Since 1 April 2025, BMW has offered a global complimentary extended warranty for the high-voltage batteries in all-electric BMW models. The new warranty applies up to a vehicle age of eight years or a maximum mileage of 160,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. Should a high-voltage battery’s capacity drop below 70 per cent during the warranty period, BMW will remedy this loss of capacity at no extra cost to the customer. This applies to all new and used all-electric BMW models from 1 April 2025.

New colours for BMW X1 and BMW X2.

Summer 2025 will bring new exterior and interior options for the BMW X1 and BMW X2. New paintwork colours include Vegas Red metallic, Night Dusk Blue and Dune Grey metallic for the BMW X2. All three colours are also available for the BMW X1, along with BMW Individual Frozen Portimao Blue metallic. Veganza perforated upholstery in the colours Castanea, Smoke White and Atlas Grey/Smoke White is newly available for customising the interior of the BMW X2. The Castanea and Smoke White colourways are available for the BMW X1. The Econeer Bicolour Blue upholstery can be ordered from summer 2025 in combination with front sport seats only. Another new option is the Brushed Aluminium Shadow interior trim.

More comprehensive equipment for BMW 7 Series, BMW X3 and BMW iX.

The BMW 7 Series and BMW i7 now feature laminated safety glass with contrast print as standard. From summer 2025, comfort glazing, sun protection glazing and the Heat Comfort package will also be available as individual options for the first time, enabling even more specific customisation.

A new equipment option for the BMW X3 is the attractive M door sill trim. It can be ordered for the M Sport package, M Sport package Pro and the BMW X3 M50 xDrive.

BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey metallic is a new paintwork finish with a particularly distinctive character, available as an option for the BMW iX from summer 2025.

Ultimate Package for BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition.

The BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition now benefit from the optional Ultimate Package. In addition to the M Carbon engine cover, this also includes M Carbon mirror caps, the Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof, active seat ventilation as well as the massage function at the front and the Comfort Package. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System ensures exceptional sound quality. The M Driver’s Package included as part of the package increases top speed to 290 km/h. In the BMW X6 M Competition, this is complemented by an exclusive M Carbon rear spoiler.

Comprehensively upgraded BMW iDrive.

Among the numerous innovations in the area of digital services is the upgraded BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant in BMW Operating System 9.

In the BMW X3, customers in many countries* can now link their own Amazon Alexa account to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This enables them to use intuitive voice control to enjoy music via the “Hey BMW” command – courtesy of Alexa running in the background, just like at home. In addition, a second voice is now available for the assistant.** Further improvements in language understanding and faster processing speeds contribute to a more harmonious overall experience.

From summer 2025, BMW Digital Premium with BMW Operating System 9 will, subject to country-specific availability, enable customers to use the Zoom app on their Curved Display for videoconferencing when the vehicle is stationary. To avoid distractions, the app automatically deactivates the video while driving.

Parking Assistant Plus upgrade.

From July 2025, the functions of the Parking Assistant Plus will be enhanced for many BMW models. It will now also use marker lines around parking spots to help identify available spaces and ensure parking precision. Previously, this feature was only available as part of the Parking Assistant Professional.

BMW Maps user interface upgrades in BMW Operating System 8.5.

BMW Maps offers intuitive destination entry and intelligent route guidance and will come with further user interface improvements from summer 2025. For faster access to frequently used functions, the home screen of the control display will feature direct touch buttons for “Home” and “Work” in the BMW Maps QuickSelect Widget, for example.

BMW i4 wins 2025 Canadian Electric Car of the Year.

The BMW i4 has once again proven its excellence in the electric vehicle market by being awarded the prestigious title of 2025 Canadian Electric Car of the Year by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). This achievement marks the second time the BMW i4 has received this esteemed accolade, having previously won the Canadian Car of the Year award in 2023.

The new BMW i4.

Richmond Hill, ON. Already innovators in the premium midsize class in terms of aesthetic appeal, driving pleasure, electrification, and digitalization, the new BMW i4 is building further on its unique status in the marketplace with updates in all these areas.

New exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels, new designs for the headlights, and rear lights available with laser-lit accents accentuate the bold visual impact of both models.

Inside, the BMW Curved Display provides the stage for the latest evolution of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, based on BMW Operating System 8.5. The display and control/operation system can be specified with an Augmented View display for the BMW Maps navigation system. And new steering wheel designs, interior trim elements, and upholsteries bring modern touches to the premium ambience of the interior.

The new BMW i4 will be built at BMW’s home plant in Munich, whose transformation into a production facility geared exclusively to all-electric models is being fueled by substantial investment. In Canada, the Gran Coupe bodystyle for the 4 Series continues to be exclusive to the i4. The worldwide market launch of the new BMW i4 will get underway in July 2024.

New design for the BMW kidney grille, headlights, and rear lights.

Slim headlights and a vertically arranged BMW kidney grille dropping deeply towards the road define the front-end styling of the BMW i4. A refreshed design brings additional visual impact to these signature brand features. The surround of the BMW kidney grille is now finished in matte chrome, both as standard and in conjunction with the optional M Sport package. Due to the lower cooling requirement of the electric drive system, the BMW kidney grille of the new BMW i4 has a fully enclosed upper section, below which is a high-gloss black surface topped by a matte-silver honeycomb pattern.

As well as a front apron with large side air intakes, the M Sport package for the BMW i4 includes a diffuser element in the lower section of the rear bumper, now finished in high-gloss black. If the optional Black Exterior Contents is specified, the BMW kidney grille surround also comes in high-gloss black.

The slim headlights have been visually and functionally upgraded. Low and high beam are generated from a single LED module, and pair of vertical and subtly arrow-shaped LED units house the side marker lights, daytime running lights, and turn signal functions. The new headlights generate a Welcome Light animation once the driver approaches the vehicle.

Adaptive LED Headlights are optional on all other variants as part of the M Sport Pro Package. Vehicles equipped as such are also fitted with new LED Taillights with Laser Technology. This innovative lighting effect employs a technology first seen on the BMW M4 CSL, a high-performance special edition model. Here, laser diodes illuminate a fibre optic bundle, giving the rear units an intricate light graphic.

New exterior paint finishes and aerodynamic wheels.

The selection of exterior paint finishes for the BMW i4 now includes Cape York Green Metallic and Vegas Red Metallic. A wide variety of BMW Individual paint finishes are also available.

The range of optional alloy wheel designs also features an attractive new addition. A new 19-inch Aero Wheel, style 996M, in Jet Black with a burnished finish can be ordered on cars specified with the optional M Sport Package.

New interior accents enhance a progressive sporting appeal.

The changes to the interior of the new BMW i4 are focused on digitalization and achieving a sharper sporting profile. The upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect further reduces in the number of buttons and controls in the cockpit. The functions of the automatic climate control system, seat ventilation, and seat and steering wheel heating, where equipped, can now be operated by touch via the BMW Curved Display or by voice command through the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. New adjustment controls for the air vents allow the airflow direction to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

The new BMW i4 is fitted as standard with sport seats in Perforated Sensatec. Vernasca Leather with Contrast Stitching is available in five colours including the new bi-colour Black with Coral Red Highlight. Also new to the i4 are optional Merino and Full Merino interiors in Black, Tartufo Brown and Ivory White.

2025 BMW i4 comes standard with a two-spoke steering wheel with polygonal rim and illuminated multifunction buttons. Adding the M Sport Package now brings an M Leather Steering Wheel in a three-spoke design with a flat-bottomed rim and a black centre stripe marking the 12 o’clock position. The three-spoke M Leather Steering Wheel standard on the i4 M50 xDrive additionally features M tricolour stitching and a red, 12 o’clock marker.

High-quality materials and new interior trim.

New interior trims include Brushed Aluminum, Fineline Light Open-Pored Wood Trim and Ash Grey Blue Open-Pored Wood Trim.

The optional Sensatec upholstery covering the dashboard now has a smoother, more refined surface that extends to the upper portion of all four door panels. And customers can now specfiy the gear selector, BMW iDrive Controller, and Start/Stop button on the centre console in glass.

Unique design elements for the M Performance model.

The BMW i4 M50 xDrive underlines its sporty character with M-specific design features. It now features a BMW kidney grille with a high-gloss black surround and horizontally arranged bars adorned by a BMW M logo. And the front apron elements previously finished in Cerium Grey now come in high-gloss black.

The M Carbon Exterior Package available as an option includes side air intake trim at the front end, M specific exterior mirror caps, finishers on the sides of the rear diffuser, and a subtle rear spoiler all made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Display and control/operation system, connectivity.

The latest generation of the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system with QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 8.5 opens up a new way of intuitively controlling vehicle functions and accessing digital services in the BMW i4. With the digital BMW Curved Display screen grouping and the expanded capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the driver-centric cockpit has been optimized for touch control and natural language.

The climate control functions are also operated digitally in the new BMW i4, enabling a further reduction in the number of physical buttons and controls. The control/operation system additionally comprises multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, the BMW iDrive Controller and, as an option, the BMW Head-Up Display.

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect: simplified and even more intuitive.

The system’s QuickSelect feature paves the way for an improved menu structure that takes cues from consumer electronics devices. It allows the driver to navigate to functions directly from the newly arranged home screen without having to enter submenus. The new, flat menu structure makes it much easier to switch between different functions and helps the driver to focus their attention on what’s happening on the road.

The new home screen continuously displays the navigation system’s map view. On the same level, there is a vertical bar on the driver’s side of the display containing widgets that can be individually selected and arranged. The BMW i4 also includes a widget for the charging functions. Some of the widgets can also be swiped horizontally to show additional content. The related functions can then be called up directly with QuickSelect. And once the relevant settings have been chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at the lower edge of the control display is all it takes to return to the home screen. Icons for direct access to the climate control menu, Apps menu, and Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ can also now be found next to the home icon.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with additional languages and new graphics.

Voice control using the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is set to become even more interactive and intuitive in the new BMW i4. There is now a choice of two different looks for the graphics visualising the digital companion on the control display, with additional graphics also appearing here in response to selected voice commands. For instance, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant acknowledges the request to look for a filling station nearby by showing the image of a fuel pump, enriching the dialogue between driver and vehicle.

BMW Maps navigation system with new charging-optimised route guidance and Augmented View.

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system forms part of the standard BMW Connected Package Professional. Underpinned by BMW Operating System 8.5, the system now makes it even easier to input destinations and can offer additional information while driving. Further enhancements include better usability of filters, a flatter menu structure with touch buttons shown directly on the map view and proactive route recommendations.

The latest version of BMW Maps also gives BMW i4 drivers access – both from the vehicle and via the My BMW App – to improved functions that enable charging-optimized route planning over long journeys. The charging stops are planned so that the selected destination is reached as quickly as possible. The driver’s preferred minimum charge level when arriving at mid-journey stops and the final destination can be adjusted in increments of five percent and incorporated into the route planning. The system can also give preference to charging stations operated by selected providers and exclude others from the route planning at the driver’s request. The system will then propose the latter only if there seems to be no alternative for an efficient route without any large detours.

Additional information is provided for the selected charging stations, such as supported connector types and payment options, as well as the availability of sanitary, catering or shopping facilities in the vicinity. The expected duration of the planned charging stop and the resulting electricity costs can also be shown in advance. The closer the vehicle gets to a scheduled mid-journey stop, the more frequently the availability of the charging point is checked so that an alternative route can be recommended in good time if necessary. Regardless of the charging-optimized route given, a constant stream of alternative charging options are also displayed, e.g. for spontaneous mid-journey breaks.

Specifying the optional BMW Digital Cockpit Professional adds not only the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display, but also the Augmented View function. This offers contextual, real-time information to complement the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of the driver’s view on the control display or instrument cluster and augmenting it with information that is currently relevant. At confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route.

Personalization and remote access with BMW ID and My BMW App.

BMW Operating System 8.5 also makes it even easier to personalise the user experience in the BMW i4. Signing in to the vehicle by scanning a QR code with a smartphone is all it takes to import the customer’s personal profile, load synchronizable settings and automatically link the key detected in the vehicle with the BMW ID.

The vehicle is also automatically added to the My BMW App. Available free of charge from the app stores for both iOS and Android, the My BMW App acts as a universal digital interface that provides information on the vehicle’s condition, charging status or remaining range at any time. Depending on the car’s specification, it also gives the user access to various remote functions. For example, the vehicle can be located remotely via the My BMW App and the doors locked and unlocked. The Remote 3D View functions included with the optional Parking Assistant Plus give drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle’s immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

Besides this, the My BMW App can also be used to send destination addresses from the user’s smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system for route planning and to initiate, purchase or extend ConnectedDrive Upgrades. It is also possible to control the charging process and pre-conditioning for the BMW i4 from the My BMW App. The My Trips feature including Efficiency Coach provides a monthly review to the user with data and evaluations for distances travelled, consumption and average speed, as well as offering helpful tips for driving more efficiently.

BMW continues run of success, taking top spot in numerous international competitions once again in 2023.

Munich. With a brace of victories in the “Best Cars” competition, BMW has backed up its successful end to 2023 with a similarly fruitful beginning to 2024. The BMW 2 Series Coupé wrapped up class victory in the compact segment for the third time in succession, while the BMW X1 led the way in the “compact SUV” category. The “Best Cars” award – voted on by readers of German motoring magazine “auto, motor und sport” and in its 48th edition this year – is one of the most prestigious in the European automotive industry. Almost 100,000 respondents took part in the survey, selecting one overall winner and one “imported car” champion from a field of 455 models across 13 vehicle categories.

The start of 2024 was also marked by class victory for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan in the “Large Car” category of the “Women's Worldwide Car of the Year” award. 75 female automotive journalists from 52 countries picked out their favourites from a total of 62 vehicles in five categories. Intended to showcase the influence of women in the automotive industry and presented for the 14th time this year, this prize takes into account factors such as safety, quality, price, design, ride comfort, everyday usability and environmental impact. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan won over the jury members with its electrified drive system line-up (including the fully electric BMW i5), as well as its spaciousness, advanced technology and now fully vegan interior.

This successful beginning to the year saw BMW building on its run of success in a large number of awards in 2023. Models from the premium brand’s current range claimed numerous prizes in both its home market of Germany and its most important sales regions internationally. The winners stretched across all the relevant categories, with compact models, luxury vehicles and high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH all making waves. As well as vehicles powered by combustion engines, the readers and juries also recognised a strikingly high number of representatives from BMW’s constantly expanding electric mobility range.

“We’re very proud that our various BMW vehicles have won awards in so many national and international competitions. Newcomer to the ranks of high-performance models and a fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle both win a “Golden Steering Wheel”.

The “Golden Steering Wheel” presented by German publications “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag” is one of the most prestigious distinctions in the European car industry. BMW took two of these coveted trophies back to Munich in 2023. The BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 – 10.1 l/100 km [27.2 – 28.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 229 g/km in the WLTP cycle) ranked first in the “sports cars” category and the fully electric BMW iX1 topped the “compact class”.

Both models added a string of other international awards to their collections over the course of 2023. For example, the first ever BMW M3 Touring – which combines the dynamic prowess of a high-performance car with impressive levels of practicality – was elected sports car of the year in the category for vehicles costing up to 120,000 euros by readers of “Auto Bild Sportscars” magazine. And acclaimed British TV programme “Top Gear” honoured the BMW M GmbH newcomer with the title “All The Car You'll Ever Need” in its “Car of the Year” awards.

The BMW iX1 collected a trio of awards in China, including “All-Electric Premium SUV of the Year”. It also won the French “Automobile Award 2023” in the “Green Tech” category and the “autonis Award” bestowed by readers of “auto, motor und sport” to the year’s most attractive new design.

Fully electric BMW i5 enjoys immediate success around the world.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW i5 also claimed an “autonis” prize. Now also available with a fully electric drive system for the first time, the new edition of the world’s most successful business sedan was also named “Car of the Year” by Portuguese magazine “Frontline”. The BMW i5 was also presented with equivalent awards in Norway and Denmark, both particularly important markets for electric vehicles. Norwegian daily “Dagbladet” teamed up with online portals “DinSide” and “Elbi24” to celebrate the BMW i5. While in Denmark, the i5 fought off competition from six other models to gain the most votes for “Car of the Year” in a final round made up exclusively of fully electric models. The jury of 20 Danish motoring journalists chose the BMW i5 as their winner by a large margin.

Chinese publication “Auto World” crowned the BMW i5 as “Most Anticipated Premium Executive Sedan of the Year”, and the fully electric business sedan also collected three awards in Great Britain: “The Car Expert” put the BMW i5 in top spot in its “Best Large Car Award”, it was named “Premium Car of the Year” in the “2024 Electrifying.com Awards” and the “Comfortable Cruiser” topped its class in Carwow’s “Car of the Year Awards 2024”.

The awards underscore the ability of the new BMW i5 Sedan to win people over with numerous different qualities: from character-rich design, a unique balance between sportiness and comfort, innovative equipment features and progressive digital services to a drive system whose power is matched by its capability over long distances. And it also uses latest-generation BMW eDrive technology to transfer the brand’s signature dynamic ability to the road with zero local emissions. In addition, adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help to give the BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined: 18.9 – 15.9 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) a range of 498 – 582 kilometres (309 – 362 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW’s electric mobility offensive is recognised with awards.

The BMW brand’s fully electric model line-up as a whole enjoyed a successful year worldwide in 2023. As well as the BMW iX1 and BMW i5, this was particularly true of the BMW i7 and BMW i4. In Great Britain alone, these two models were both among the winners in seven awards. Both won the “Auto Express New Car Award” in their respective vehicle classes. The BMW i4 also claimed the “Pocket-lint Award” and “Business Car Award”, and the BMW i7 celebrated success in both the “What Car? Electric Car Awards” and the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”. The fully electric luxury sedan racked up five prizes in China, too, including the “Car of the Year” distinction from leading online magazine “sohu.com”.

There was also much to celebrate in France and the USA, where the BMW i7 was given the “Best Overall and Best Value” rating from “Money” magazine and praised by “wards auto” magazine for its standout luxury ambience and digital user experience with BMW Theatre Screen in the rear compartment. Renowned US magazine “car and driver” named both the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW i4 eDrive40 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 19.1 – 16.1 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) among the “Best 10” of 2023.

Top marks and distinctions for the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series ranges, the BMW M2 and the BMW X3.

BMW set the seal on a successful year in Germany with a two-pronged triumph. The BMW 3 Series and BMW X3 closed out 2023 with class victory in the coveted “Auto Trophy”. The BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring, for example, took clear victories in the hotly contested midsize segment of the readers’ survey conducted by German title “Auto Zeitung”, racking up 19.0 per cent of the vote. This was the seventh class win in a row for the 3 Series. Meanwhile, the rugged aura, interior spaciousness and commitment to electrification of the BMW X3 helped it account for 15.3 per cent of the votes cast and therefore the highest points total in the high-volume vehicle segment of “SUVs costing 30,000 – 60,000 euros”.

The BMW 3 Series was a particularly prolific award-winner in Great Britain. In the “Business Car Awards”, the 3 Series won the “Best Premium Car” prize, and it also gained entry to the “Hall of Fame” of “Fleet News” magazine as the “Most Reliable Company Car”. The BMW 3 Series won twice in the “What Car? Used Car Awards”, topping both the “Used Executive Car” category and overall “Used Car of the Year”. And then there was the “Best Used Hybrid Executive Car” distinction for the BMW 330e Sedan (fuel consumption, combined: 1.9 – 1.4 l/100 km [148.7 – 201.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined 20.1 – 18.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 43 – 32 g/km in the WLTP cycle). The plug-in hybrid model also tasted success in the USA, where “Money” magazine described it as “Best for Handling”.

Adding to the wave of success enjoyed by the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 4 Series – with its standout sporting appeal – also enriched the brand’s glittering international reputation in the premium midsize segment. The best example of this came in the BMW 4 Series Coupé and BMW 4 Series Convertible’s showing in the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards” in Great Britain. The closed-roof two-door won the “Coupe of the Year” for the third year in succession in 2023. And this year its open-top sister model also won the “Convertible of the Year” award.

Two other British awards were claimed by the BMW M2. It was voted “Best Performance Car” in “The Car Expert Awards”, and the compact high-performance sports car also took the title of “Performance Car of the Year” in the “Auto Express New Car Awards”.

Richmond Hill, ON. BMW Group Canada is proud to introduce the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe to Canada for a limited time and in a special form: the new 2024 BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe Legacy Edition. BMW Group Canada announces the new BMW i4 xDrive40, expanding the i4 range with an additional xDrive all-wheel drive variant.

Richmond Hill, ON. Today the BMW Group continues to broaden its offering of battery electric vehicles with a fourth addition to the i4 portfolio, the new 2024 BMW i4 xDrive40. With an additional electric motor powering the front wheels, the BMW i4 xDrive40 now joins the highly successful and award-winning BMW i4 M50, i4 eDrive40 and i4 eDrive35. The i4 xDrive40 will begin production in July 2023 at BMW Group Plant Munich. First units are expected to arrive in Canada in the final quarter of 2023 with an MSRP of $69,900 CAD.

The new and highly dynamic i4 xDrive40 is equipped with dual, electrically-excited synchronous motors producing a combined 396 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. These motors propel the i4 xDrive40 from 0 to 100 km/h in an estimated 5.1 seconds and to a top speed of 200 km/h.

The battery in the i4 xDrive40 is the same as the eDrive40 and M50 variants, with a net capacity of 81.1 kWh. This produces an impressive, estimated EPA range of up to 494 km. The i4 xDrive40 can charge at a maximum of 205 kW on DC current.

Cementing its popularity and leadership, the M50 variant of the i4 became BMW M GmbH’s best-selling model worldwide in 2022, an impressive feat in its first year of production. The BMW Group is aiming for fully electric vehicles to account for 50% of its global sales by 2030.

Richmond Hill, ON. Today the Canadian-based automotive publication AutoTrader announced the BMW i4 as the winner of their award for Best Compact Luxury Car for 2023. While the Compact Luxury Car category is open to cars with all powertrain types, this is the first time an EV has won the category. A win in this category for the BMW i4 demonstrates not only the growing acceptance of electric vehicles, but also the quality of the BMW i4’s product offering.

More than 20 automotive journalists from across Canada vote for the best vehicles in over 30 categories. When voting, the AutoTrader jury considers over a dozen criteria including engineering excellence, driver satisfaction, innovation, performance, value, safety, and more. The AutoTrader Awards launched in this format in 2019.

The BMW i4 is available in three variants; the eDrive35, eDrive40 and the M50 xDrive and has a base MSRP of $54,990 CAD. Depending on the variant and equipment selected, the i4 offers an all-electric driving range between 365 and 484 km.

The all-electric BMW i4 wins the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s Car of the Year in Canada for 2023 – the first fully electric model to earn the title.

Richmond Hill, ON. Today, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) named the BMW i4 as the 2023 Canadian Car of the Year. After automotive journalists from across Canada named the all-electric sedan the Best Premium EV in Canada for 2023, it became a finalist for the coveted position, today becoming the first electric vehicle to ever win AJAC’s top award.

BMW M GmbH closes anniversary year with new sales record.

Munich. At the end of its anniversary year, BMW M GmbH has once again achieved record results. Global sales of performance and high-performance cars rose to 177,257 vehicles during the 2022 financial year. This represents an increase of 8.4 per cent compared to the previous year, despite the continuing challenging conditions in the area of logistics and supply chains. The most important single market in 2022 was again the USA, with the second most important sales region again being the German domestic market, followed by the UK.

“The enthusiasm of the M community for emotionally powerful performance on the road and on the racetrack has carried us through the entire anniversary year,” says Franciscus van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH. “This is also expressed in a new sales record for BMW M automobiles, which gives us a positive outlook for 2023.”

BMW i4 M50: the best-selling BMW M automobile drives locally emission-free.
At the same time, 2022 marks BMW M GmbH's successful start into the age of electric mobility. “The best-selling BMW M automobile of 2022 is the all-electric BMW i4 M50,” says Timo Resch, Head of Customer, Brand and Sales at BMW M GmbH. “For us, this is a clear signal that the unique M feeling has arrived in the world of electrified vehicles.” The BMW i4 M50 is powered by an electric motor on both the front and rear axles, which together generate a maximum output of 400 kW/544 hp. The perfectly coordinated power delivery of the two e-motors and independent suspension tuning ensure an M-typical driving experience characterised by dynamics, agility and precision, which proved to be a real crowd-puller right from the outset.

With the BMW iX M60*, a second all-electric performance car from BMW M GmbH made a highly successful debut. During the course of 2023, BMW M GmbH will continue its product offensive with, among other things, the first electrified high-performance automobile, the BMW XM, and the BMW i7 M70, a BMW M automobile based on the fully electric BMW i7. The further transformation towards electric mobility has also already been mapped out. In order to be able to include high-performance cars with purely electric drive in the range in the future, BMW M GmbH will intensify the corresponding concept testing in 2023. The focus will be on an integrated driving dynamics control system and an electric M xDrive all-wheel drive system with four electric motors, which will ensure that the emotionally powerful M feeling reaches an even higher level.

Anniversary year with spectacular premieres, BMW M3 and BMW M4 remain on the road to success, fast-paced launch for the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupe*.
The celebrations of the 50th anniversary of BMW M GmbH were accompanied by debuts for numerous spectacular new models. The broad spectrum of new releases ranged from the second generation of the puristic BMW M2*, with its combination of straight six-cylinder engine, 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, which evokes classic driving pleasure in a high-performance automobile, to the extroverted BMW XM with its 480 kW/653 hp M HYBRID drive. The first BMW M3 Touring* also offers completely new ways to experience M-typical performance. This diversity creates ideal conditions for attracting additional target groups and generating further growth in 2023.

The current increase in sales figures is also based on sales successes in a wide range of vehicle segments. The high-performance sports cars of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 series, which – including the new BMW M3 Touring – are available in four body variants, in two performance levels, with a choice of a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission, as well as with rear-wheel drive or the all-wheel drive system M xDrive, continued to enjoy particularly widespread popularity in 2022. BMW M GmbH thus covers a wide range of customer needs in this core segment.

With an exceptionally strong performance within their competitive environment, the high-performance cars based on BMW X models also contributed to BMW M GmbH's new sales record. The upcoming upgrade for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M models in spring 2023 will provide effective impetus for a continuation of this success story.

The successful launch of the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupe in 2022 proved to be a highlight in the performance car segment. The new edition of the compact two-door is powered by a 275 kW/374 hp straight-six engine and is now also available with classic rear-wheel drive. “The new sales record for BMW M Automobiles is based on our successful presence in a broad range of vehicle segments,” says Timo Resch. “With our wide-ranging product portfolio, we are also ideally positioned for the future.”

Premiere at Daytona: the new BMW M3 CS* and the BMW M Hybrid V8.
In addition, BMW M GmbH fulfils the desire for particularly concentrated racing characteristics with attractive special models – as early as 2022 with the BMW M4 CSL* and soon with the new BMW M3 CS.

The BMW M3 CS will make its world debut on the last weekend of January as part of the 24-hour race at Daytona. The tradition-steeped competition in the US state of Florida is also the venue for BMW M Motorsport's comeback to endurance racing. The new BMW M Hybrid V8 will compete there for the first time. 47 years after the Daytona overall victory of the legendary BMW 3.0 CSL, the new LMDh prototype is set to race for points in the IMSA GTP class of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship before also competing in the official FIA World Endurance Championship at Le Mans and elsewhere in 2024.

The final phase of the development process and the subsequent test drives on various race tracks were among the highlights of 2022 for the BMW M GmbH motorsport department, while the all-important success on the race track was the overall victory in the DTM drivers' and teams' championships. South African Sheldon van der Linde and Team Schubert Motorsport secured the title win in the prestigious touring car championship in the very first season with the new BMW M4 GT3.

World premiere at the Essen Motor Show 2022: The new BMW M2 with BMW M Performance Parts.

Munich. BMW will be participating in the Essen Motor Show 2022 with numerous attractions and a diverse programme. Europe's largest trade fair for tuning, motorsport and sporty production vehicles will open its doors at the Gruga-Halle grounds from 3 to 11 December 2022. Among other things, BMW will inspire visitors with a world premiere: In Essen, the new BMW M2 with BMW M Performance Parts (fuel consumption combined: 9.8 - 9.6 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 222 - 218 g/km according to WLTP; data according to NEDC: - ) will be on display for the first time.

Furthermore, in addition to current BMW M automobiles, other sporty retrofit options from the Original BMW accessories range will be presented at the BMW stand in hall 3. Interviews and autograph sessions with star guests from the motorsport scene round off the varied programme at the BMW stand.

Sharpened appearance, enhanced performance: BMW M Performance Parts for the new BMW M2.

In addition to the sharpened appearance, the customisation options developed specifically for the new BMW M2 also optimise the impressive driving characteristics of the high-performance sports car. The striking add-on parts for the front, rear and sides of the compact two-door model are made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), which is sealed with a transparent coating to reveal the typical fibre structure of the material. Exterior components such as the M Performance Carbon front attachment, the M Performance Carbon side skirt attachments, the M Performance Carbon rear diffuser or the M Performance Carbon rear spoiler underscore the puristic racing genes of the new BMW M2, whilst also having a positive effect on its aerodynamic properties.

The M Performance Titanium silencer system, for example, not only saves eight kilograms in weight vs. the standard component, but also brings out the sound of the 338 kW/460 hp straight six-cylinder engine even more intensively. The Red Bull Driftbrothers will bring even more performance and racing aesthetics to Essen. Elias and Johannes Hountondji will be exhibiting one of their drift cars at the BMW stand: Their racing cars are based on a production model of the BMW M4 Series. BMW and Kith start Season 2 of their successful collaboration with the BMW i4 M50.

Munich. More than just electrically charged: the BMW i4 M50 (electricity consumption in kWh/100 km: – (NEDC) / 22.5–18.0 (WLTP); electric range (WLTP) in km: 416–520) is not just the first fully electric M automobile, but also the second BMW M vehicle that New York designer Ronnie Fieg has exclusively designed as part of the collaboration between his brand, Kith, and BMW M GmbH – inside and out. Only seven BMW i4 M50 by Kith vehicles will be produced for the public. One of those is the only vehicle within this collaboration being auctioned to a global public audience. To mark the limited edition, Kith is selling a 51-piece collection comprising apparel and accessories, inspired by the colours of the Kith Vitality Green vehicle paint and BMW Individual Caramel Merino vehicle leather in its stores all over the world and online

A symbol of the transformation of BMW in the age of electric vehicles.

In BMW M’s 50th anniversary year, a historic vehicle is bridging the gap between the past and the electrified present. As a BMW enthusiast, Ronnie Fieg has also transformed a 1972 BMW 1602 into a contemporary electric car. A homage to history: at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, two BMW 1602s, converted into electric cars, were used at various long-distance competitions as accompanying and camera cars by the organisation committee. This was the start of a pioneering, forward-looking evolution of electrified vehicles at BMW.

The unique 1972 BMW 1602 Elektro by Ronnie Fieg will be handed over to the designer by the BMW Group. He already owns an impressive collection of BMW vehicles, including a legendary BMW E30 M3 by Kith stemming from Season 1 of the collaboration. His passion for BMW was sparked as a boy by his grandfather; the collaboration with BMW M means this comes full circle for him. Ronnie Fieg founded his Kith label in 2011. The collaboration between the BMW and Kith brands started in 2020 with the design of a BMW M4 Competition Coupé by Ronnie Fieg. The 150 editions of the exclusive BMW M4 Competition × Kith were sold out in less than 30 minutes.

A combination of sportiness and aesthetics.

The success of the first brand collaboration with Kith led to this second edition, where electromobility is the focus. As the first fully electric M model, the BMW i4 M50 can be called the “Brand Shaper”. It has the well-regarded M DNA and as a BEV shows the responsible direction that BMW is going in. The 1972 BMW 1602 tells the story of the very first electrified BMW, which came onto the market 50 years ago and which is part of the brand’s high-performance segment. The sportiness of the lifestyle and streetwear label Kith is a perfect match for the BMW M. Ronnie Fieg gives both models a new aesthetic with his design.

BMW goes Kith Vitality Green.

For the first time ever, BMW is naming a new colour after a brand partner: Kith Vitality Green is a rich, dark green that is not available on a serial BMW, as it is limited to this exclusive collaboration. New logos merged with each other are a hallmark of the various Kith partnerships with globally famous companies. BMW changed its brand emblem for a collaboration partner for the first time two years ago. The well-known BMW emblem was again altered this time: an additional ring in the colour Kith Vitality Green was added around the brand logo that adorns the hood of the BMW i4 M50 by Kith. The green ring lists the partnership, model and year as well as the fact that it is an electric car. The logo on the hood of the 1972 BMW 1602 by Ronnie Fieg looks different again: the BMW letters have been swapped for Kith. A similar logo in black and white with the subline “Elektro-Auto” can be found as an engraving on the lid of the cup holder in the BMW i4 M50 by Kith.

The interior goes Caramel.

Kith Vitality Green is the colour in which all vehicles of the collaboration are painted. While the exterior is an exquisite green, the full-grain merino leather interior is in the colour Caramel. In the 1972 BMW 1602 Elektro by Ronnie Fieg, the leather of the seats is embossed with the Kith lettering, as are the leather inserts in the footwells for the driver and front passenger. The logo altered to feature the Kith lettering instead of BMW can also be found on the centre holes of the rims.

The interior of the BMW i4 M50 by Kith is also particularly harmoniously coordinated in Caramel. The knee bolster, steering column, seat and side panelling, as well as the lower part of the A and B posts are all upholstered in merino leather. The front and rear floor mats are also trimmed in caramel-coloured leather and embroidered with the M logo, which has been changed to Kith, and the M stripes. Kith lettering in a box design is embossed on the headrests as well as the front centre armrest. “KITH Exclusive Edition” has been laser-engraved into the trim.

Technology and luxury in the limited edition.

The technology has been taken over from the BMW i4 M50, which combines the innovative power of the BMW M with that of the BMW i for the first time. The BMW i4 M50 with its fully electric powertrain fed by two BMW M eDrive motors achieves a powerful 400 kW (544 hp) in Sport Boost mode and offers a dynamism typical of a BMW M in an as-yet-unseen edition, which takes it from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. It is locally emission-free and has a reach of up to 520 kilometres according to WLTP. As the first purely electric Gran Coupé from BMW M, this extraordinary vehicle creates a class of its own and proves itself for everyday use too, thanks to its impressive reach, luxurious spaciousness and intelligent networking.

In addition to the standard equipment in the BMW i4 M50 and specific scope of the Kith collaboration, the model is equipped with a few special additions as standard. Alongside the adaptive M chassis, these include the M sports brakes with red brake callipers, the M aerodynamic package and the BMW Individual Shadow Line lights. BMW Group Canada announces the new 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35; orders now open.

Richmond Hill, ON. The BMW Group continues to broaden its portfolio of electrically powered vehicles with its latest addition: the new BMW i4 eDrive35. The BMW i4 eDrive 35 further expands the BMW i4 family, joining the highly successful BMW i4 M50 xDrive and BMW i4 eDrive40. The i4 eDrive35 is available for order in Canada as of today, starting at $54,990 CAD.

The BMW i4 eDrive35 comes with all the latest BMW Gen5 eDrive powertrain technology already found in its BMW i4 siblings and BMW iX. It also features the same BMW Curved Display with BMW iDrive8 operating system found in these models.

The BMW i4 eDrive35 will begin production in November at the BMW Group Munich plant. First units are expected to arrive in Canada in the first quarter of 2023.

The i4 eDrive35 is equipped with a single, electrically excited synchronous motor, in a rear-drive configuration, producing an estimated 281 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. This motor propels the i4 eDrive35 from 0 to 100 km/h in an estimated 6 seconds and to a top speed of 190 km/h.

The new battery in the i4 eDrive35 has a net capacity of 66 kWh, with a total gross capacity of 70.2 kWh. The i4 eDrive35 can charge at a maximum of 180 kW on DC current and 11 kW on AC current. Based on early testing on DC current, owners can expect to charge the HV battery from 10% to 80% in as little as 32 minutes. All versions of the i4 operate on the same 400V architecture.

The i4 eDrive35 will launch in Canada with a starting price of $54,990 CAD. Consequently, it is anticipated the vehicle will qualify for the $5,000 purchase incentive as part of the Federal iZEV Program, as well as all current provincial government incentives, namely in British Columbia and Quebec. These incentives range from $3,000 in BC to $7,000 in Quebec.

Munich . The heads of state and government from the world’s most important industrialised nations convened at Schloss Elmau in Upper Bavaria on 26 – 28 June 2022 for the latest G7 summit. The BMW Group provided a shuttle service for the event, which was initiated by the German government. As well as the latest series-production models, the fleet of shuttles also featured three examples of the brand new BMW i7 xDrive60 (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 19.6 – 18.4 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km; figures in NEDC cycle: – ), which was unveiled just a few weeks ago. The presence of the BMW i7 in the fleet gave the assembled dignitaries the opportunity to experience the immense driving comfort and futuristic ambience of the electrically powered sedan a full five months before its global launch gets underway. A high-security vehicle based on the new BMW 7 Series will be added to the line-up during the course of 2023. The BMW Group’s Protection Vehicles are tailored to individuals requiring special protection, and examples with an all-electric drive system will now be available for the first time.

Over more than 40 years, the BMW Group has amassed exceptional expertise and experience in the development and manufacture of vehicles designed specially for the specific requirements of authorities and public representatives. “We will continue this tradition in 2023 with a high-security vehicle combining the dynamic prowess, ride comfort and interior comfort of the new BMW 7 Series with an integrated protection concept that is unique in this segment,” says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “And we will also introduce an all-electric high-security vehicle for the first time – with no comprises when it comes to the standard of protection for our customers. It will be based on the BMW i7, demonstrating how sustainability and security can go hand in hand.”

The vehicle architecture of the new 7 Series range was devised from the outset for both internal combustion engines and electrified drive systems. The production development process for the luxury sedan already made allowance for the next-generation high-security vehicle’s new and innovative protection concept.

This integrated security concept, together with the “craft manufacturing” process at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, ensures that the electric variant of the new high-security vehicle also boasts an unrivalled combination of protection, poise & assurance, spaciousness and sustainability. “The new BMW i7 brings together a unique, all-electric driving experience with the most advanced package of technologies anywhere in the industry,” says Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Development. “So using this high-tech product as a platform for a top-class high-security vehicle seemed to us like the obvious thing to do.”

The BMW Group presented a concept vehicle demonstrating the compatibility of increased protection levels and sustainable mobility back at the IAA Mobility 2021 event. The BMW Concept iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 was equipped with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system, making it the first ever concept for a high-security vehicle from a large-scale carmaker worldwide to offer zero tailpipe emissions and certified class VR6 protection.

The fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions, electric power consumption and operating range figures are determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable. They refer to vehicles in the German market. Where a range is shown, the figures take into account the impact of any optional extras.

All values were calculated based on the new WLTP test cycle. WLTP values are taken as the basis for determining vehicle-related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO₂ emissions as well as eligibility for any applicable vehicle-specific subsidies. Celebrating 50 years of BMW M GmbH at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Goodwood. All eyes will be on BMW M GmbH at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, as BMW’s legendary Motorsport division celebrates five decades of success. Festivalgoers will witness the world premiere of the first-ever BMW M3 Touring and the UK premiere of the new BMW M4 CSL, as both take to the hill throughout the world-famous four-day event. All this against the backdrop of a striking central feature sculpture on the lawn of Goodwood House, designed as a homage to 50 years of motorsport excellence as it showcases some of the most iconic models from BMW M. Elsewhere, visitors will be able to see – and in some cases, drive – the latest models from BMW’s exciting range, including the new BMW iX1, i7, i4 and iX M60.

For the first time in its history, the BMW M range will be complemented by a BMW M3 Touring which is a distillation of the technological prowess and know-how from the BMW M3 and M4 family, combined with the practicality of a five-door touring model. This latest BMW M model will be unveiled at BMW M at Trackside at 10:00 am (BST) on Thursday 23 June, alongside a high-performance M3 Touring with Performance Parts, and can then be seen on the Hillclimb in the ‘First Glance’ category every day of the Festival.

Alongside the M3 Touring and BMW M3 Touring MotoGP Safety Car on the hill will be the new BMW M4 CSL, celebrating its UK premiere. This ultimate, track-honed, two-seater coupe is defined by a 40hp power hike over the current BMW M4 Competition Coupé to 550hp, while meticulous weight-saving measures – including the use of carbon-fibre for the roof, bonnet and boot lid – achieve a 100kg reduction in overall weight (in standard specification in the German market). As a result, the new BMW M4 CSL has recorded the best-ever lap-time for a BMW road car at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit.

With BMW M GmbH as the honoured marque, the Central Feature in front of Goodwood House will present an eye-catching display of BMW M cars past, present and future. BMW UK will add its legendary BMW 3.0 CSL to the Central Feature, while BMW Group Classic is providing three further examples: the BMW M1 Procar from the late 1970s; a WTCC BMW 3 Series E90; the Le Mans winning 1999 BMW V12 LMR. The display is completed by the BMW M LMDh racecar, that will debut next year.

Besides providing historic BMW M cars for the Central Feature, BMW Group Classic will bring four additional famous race cars to Goodwood’s Hillclimb. Pedro Piquet (BRA), son of three-time F1 World Champion Nelson Piquet, will drive the world’s first turbo-charged F1 World Champion car, the 1983 Brabham BMW BT52.

Steve Soper (UK) will climb the hill in the BMW V12 LMR on Thursday. He is followed by Markus Flasch (CEO of BMW M GmbH, 2018-2021), who will be in the driver’s seat on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

HRH Leopold Prince of Bavaria (GER) will drive the sharknose BMW 635CSi and Bruno Spengler (CAN) will drive his famous BMW Z4 GTR which features the Michel Vaillant Design from the 2015 Spa-Francorchamps 24h race.

For many, BMW M at Trackside will form the focal point for the long weekend’s celebrations. Crowned by an original BMW M1, the stand will host iconic models from BMW M’s illustrious past, from the legendary BMW M3 E30 to the revered BMW M3 CSL E46. They will take their place alongside a thrilling line-up of modern-day BMW M greats, from the ultimate 635hp BMW M5 CS and track-honed BMW M4 GT3 to the exclusive new BMW M850i Convertible and innovative electric BMW i4 M50. Visitors will be able to catch a glimpse of the future for BMW M, with the innovative BMW Concept XM, a vision of uncompromising high performance and extravagant luxury.

The Stable Yard – once again dedicated to BMW’s latest range of all-electric and electrified models – will offer the chance to see the stunning BMW i Vision Circular, a concept which illustrates the company’s determination to become the most sustainable manufacturer. Optimised for the circular economy and with the goal of achieving 100% recycled and recyclable material use, the BMW i Vision Circular offers a view of a compact yet luxurious fully-electric vehicle with a focus on sustainability for the year 2040.

BMW’s sustainability focus is equally apparent in the new BMW i7, on display in The Stable Yard following its recent unveiling. The latest version of the brand’s flagship saloon is set to redefine the luxury segment with new levels of electrification and digitalisation. Its state-of-the-art all-electric drivetrain is complemented by a blend of luxurious interior design and an astonishing entertainment experience, with the multi-sensory BMW iDrive and unique 31.3-inch 8K BMW Theatre Screen. These attributes are further displayed in the powerful new BMW M760e, a plug-in hybrid with 571hp that delivers scintillating performance yet achieves remarkable efficiency.

The recently revealed BMW iX1 will make its UK debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed, representing another first at the Stable Yard. The third-generation BMW X1 features a sharper design, across-the-board sustainability and cutting-edge digital innovations. Available for the first time with an all-electric drive system, the BMW iX1 xDrive30 is set to offer an electric driving range between 257 – 272 miles (WLTP, provisional figures).

These models will also be joined by the company’s technology flagship, the new BMW iX M60, a fully-electric Sports Activity Vehicle that combines emissions-free driving pleasure and sporting agility with lounge-style luxury and comfort. Powered by two BMW M eDrive electric motors to provide intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive capability, the BMW iX M60 can accelerate from 0-62 mph in a seamless 3.8 seconds, yet still achieve up to 348 miles (WLTP) of driving range on a single charge.

Members of the public will be able to experience the BMW iX M60’s searing performance for themselves during Friday’s ‘Electric Only’ Motor Circuit Test Drives, where they’ll also be able to take to the circuit behind the wheel of the new BMW i4, the brand’s first-ever fully-electric Gran Coupé, and the practical BMW iX3.

Faster, more precise, more efficient: The first fully electric BMW xDrive system in the BMW iX and the BMW i4 M50.

Two engines, four driven wheels and a globally unique drive torque control system ensure optimal traction, driving stability and dynamics in every situation.

Munich. More than 35 years ago, all-wheel drive provided a new form of driving pleasure for the first time in a BMW, and the intelligent distribution of power between the front and rear axles has been known as BMW xDrive for almost two decades. The fascination of four driven wheels now reaches an additional, particularly sustainable dimension. The first fully electric BMW xDrive system can now be experienced on the road. It makes its debut in the BMW iX and the BMW i4 M50 (combined power consumption: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km).

Like all BMW iX vehicle types, the fully electric Gran Coupé from BMW M GmbH is powered by an engine on both the front and rear axles. This creates an axle-parallel all-wheel drive without a mechanical connection between the front and rear wheels. The interaction of the two engines is optimised by an innovative and globally unique drive torque control system. The electric BMW xDrive system thus ensures the ideal form of power transmission in every driving situation – combined with a typical BMW driving experience.

Intelligent networking of driving stability control, actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation and drive control.

The fully electric BMW xDrive system makes it possible to transform outstanding drive power, expressed for example in the BMW i4 M50 with a system output of up to 400 kW/544 hp and a maximum torque of 795 Nm, into superior driving dynamics. This requires precise distribution of the drive torque. This is ensured by linking the DSC (driving stability control) system with the all-wheel drive-specific version of the actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation and the Combined Charging Unit (CCU), whose highly integrated range of functions for the first time includes both charging and drive electronics.

The intelligent networking of all systems makes it possible to distribute the drive torque requested by the driver between the two engines in such a way that traction and driving stability, dynamics and efficiency are guaranteed to an optimum extent in the respective driving situation. DSC defines the general conditions under which the electric BMW xDrive system can operate. It permanently analyses the vehicle's wheel speeds, steering angle, driving speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration and yaw rate. Based on these parameters, a speed corridor is determined in which the two drive units may be active to ensure a stable driving condition. The My Mode selected by the driver and whether the DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) is activated are also taken into account. This mode is a special DSC mode in which, in interaction with actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation and other control functions, an even sportier driving style is possible on normal surfaces without interventions, among other things through increased intervention thresholds. In addition, a maximum drive is achieved on loose ground such as snow, sand or gravel.

From the data supplied by DSC and the drive torque requested by the driver, the CCU calculates the ideal distribution between front and rear-wheel drive. The fully electric xDrive system can react noticeably faster and with significantly higher control quality to any change in driving situation than would be possible with a transfer box between the axles familiar from BMW models with combustion engines.

The drive control of the CCU, actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation and the driving stability control system interact flexibly and precisely. If required, the data supplied by DSC about the driving situation can already proactively include an all-wheel drive request. In many driving situations, a change in the distribution of drive torque between the front and rear engines alone can increase driving stability without requiring any further intervention. If one wheel threatens to lose grip with the road surface, actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation with its particularly fast and precise reactions comes into play first. Only in critical situations does DSC also assist with wheel-specific braking interventions.

Optimal traction, perfect directional stability, maximum efficiency.

During driving off and accelerating, the desired drive torque is distributed between both engines by the CCU to provide optimised traction. In addition to the road friction values and the driver's choice, the electric BMW xDrive and actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation also take into account environmental parameters such as wind, uphill or downhill gradients, the vehicle settings of the My Modes and the DTC, as well as the dynamic axle-load distribution, which provides more weight and better power transmission to the rear axle during acceleration. Due to the direct integration of actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation into the drive torque control system of the CCU, long signal paths to the driving stability control system are eliminated, meaning that interventions can be performed at a speed that is up to 10 times higher and in a particularly precise dosage. This ensures unwavering directional stability of the vehicle even during extremely dynamic acceleration manoeuvres.

When the accelerator pedal is pressed moderately, a continuously higher proportion of drive torque is provided by the rear electric drive unit as the speed increases. In phases of constant driving, the drive is finally provided solely by the engine acting on the rear wheels. This creates the traditional BMW driving experience. At the same time, the efficiency of the drive system and, with it, the range of the vehicle is optimised.

Full all-wheel drive functionality is available at all times. For example, even when driving in My Mode Efficient, any spontaneous load demand is immediately met with a significant increase in drive torque on the front axle. When cornering dynamically, on the other hand, the proportion of rear-wheel drive is increased. The front wheels can therefore absorb higher cornering forces due to the reduced drive torque. In this way, the vehicle's driving stability and agility are increased in equal measure. Depending on the driving situation, the fully variable electric BMW xDrive system can implement any form of power transmission: traction-optimised all-wheel drive with variable torque distribution as well as pure front or rear-wheel drive.

Precisely controlled energy recovery optimises driving stability and efficiency.

In coasting and braking phases, both engines can feed energy back into the high-voltage battery by means of a generator function. This makes a significantly higher recuperation performance possible than just one motor. The fully electric BMW xDrive system also makes it possible to control these energy recovery processes in such a way as to ensure maximum driving stability and efficiency at all times. The system is designed so that the more powerful engine on the rear axle also takes on the main role in recovering energy. In curves and in adverse road conditions, on the other hand, a higher proportion of energy recovery performance is provided by the front engine.

Just like the drive torque, the energy recovery torque can also be divided quickly and precisely between the two engines. In addition, the intelligently networked drive torque control system ensures that a stable driving condition is also guaranteed during deceleration processes. The slip control set by DSC helps to prevent unstable driving conditions caused by excessive braking recovery. The transition from deceleration through recovery to the intervention of the hydraulic braking system is not perceptible to the driver. The integrated braking system also contributes to this, providing a constant pedal feel at all times.

The figures for fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions, power consumption and range are measured using the methods required according to Regulation (EC) 2007/715 as amended. These figures refer to vehicles on the automotive market in Germany. For span widths, the specifications take into account the effects of any optional equipment.

BMW to Debut a New Advertisement during the Super Bowl Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Salma Hayek Pinault and the All-New, Fully Electric BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle.

Richmond Hill, ON. BMW will debut a new 60-second advertisement during the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 13, 2022, to showcase its all-new, fully-electric BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle, which arrives in Canada next month. The star-studded spot features legendary actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Academy Award nominee Salma Hayek Pinault, and was directed by two-time Academy Award nominated director Bryan Buckley. It will air as part of the Canadian broadcast on CTV.

Schwarzenegger stars as Zeus, the Greek god of lightning, and Hayek Pinault plays his wife, the goddess Hera, as they retire from Mt. Olympus to a quiet life in Palm Springs, California. However, the monotony of retirement quickly weighs on Zeus, who becomes frustrated by his struggles with earthly electronics and his nagging mortal neighbours’ constant requests to charge their electric golf carts and hedge trimmers. Meanwhile, Hera, the hero of the story, has fully acclimated and is thriving in retirement. In an effort to bring some excitement back into Zeus’s life, she gives him an all-electric BMW iX, which quickly helps reignite her husband’s electric mojo. The spot closes with the happy couple rocking down the road in their new BMW iX to Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue” while Zeus uses his electric power to change the traffic lights to green.

“All-electric mobility is at the very heart of the BMW brand,” said Jens Thiemer, senior vice president, customer and brand, BMW AG. “There is no better place to make this statement than in front of one of the largest television audiences in the world, where viewers tune in as much for the commercials as they do for the game. With Arnold and Salma, we are able show the world the new BMW iX in a memorable and impactful way.”

“The humour lies in this legendary god of lightning, who is supposed to be indestructible, battling with everyday electronics,” said Schwarzenegger. “It is only when his brilliant wife presents him with the gift of an all-electric BMW iX that Zeus is struck with the mighty power of electricity and is completely rejuvenated.”

The ad also marks Hayek Pinault’s debut in a Super Bowl spot and the first time she and Schwarzenegger have costarred in an ad in North America.

“This is my first Super Bowl commercial – and the first time I’ve played a Greek goddess,” said Hayek Pinault. “Seventy-five percent of the decisions made in a marriage about where to spend the money are made by women, and in this commercial, it is the woman who decides on the right car to get her husband back on track. Of course, the commercial is entertaining, but there is also a real human truth to it.”

“I’ve done 60-some-odd Super Bowl spots. I’ve never had more star power than these two,” said director Bryan Buckley. “When I first saw Schwarzenegger’s name on the script, I was in. And Salma—there is no one greater as an actress. It’s a movie in 60 seconds, and it’s on the biggest platform.”

Designed to provide more than just mortal mobility, the BMW iX brings together the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology with the company’s latest developments in the fields of design, connectivity, digital services and sustainability. In Canada, the BMW iX will be offered as the BMW iX xDrive40, iX xDrive 50 and the high-powered BMW iX M60. The latter model marks the arrival of the BMW M brand into the segment of dedicated electric performance vehicles, and sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. In terms of range, the BMW iX handily surpasses the 500 kilometre threshold with a confirmed range of up to 521 km.

Inside, the vehicle impresses with the latest in-vehicle technology, including 5G connectivity, a sweeping curved display that unites the 12.3-inch information display with a 14.9-inch central control display, and the debut of BMW iDrive 8, the company’s latest user-interface system. The BMW iX starts at $79,900.

“The BMW iX is arguably the biggest model launch we’ve had in the last decade,” stated Andrew Scott, director, BMW brand management, BMW Canada. “What better place than the Super Bowl to tell Canadians that our all-electric future is here? Alongside the BMW iX, BMW will also launch the fully-electric BMW i4 four-door Gran Coupe in Canada next month as the company takes a major step toward its stated goal of reaching global sales of 50% electric vehicles by 2030.

BMW’s last Super Bowl ad appeared in 2015 and featured Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel as they marveled over BMW’s first fully-electric production vehicle, the BMW i3. The BMW i3 was a pioneer of electromobility and later became one of the best-selling premium electric vehicles in the world.

BMW confirms official Canadian range figures for upcoming iX and i4 battery-electric vehicles; iX confirmed up to 521 km.

Richmond Hill, ON. Today, BMW Group Canada announced the confirmed, Canadian range figures for its upcoming iX and i4 battery-electric vehicles. All confirmed models and variants have surpassed initial estimates, further increasing the appeal of both vehicles for Canadian customers.

The 2022 BMW iX, the brand’s new electric flagship, has handily surpassed the 500 km threshold with a new, confirmed range of up to 521 km. This has added another 46 km over the initial estimate of 475, or nearly a 10% increase.

“We always try to be conservative with our data and figures at BMW, especially when it comes to early estimates,” said Andrew Scott, Director of Brand Management with BMW Group Canada. “To be able to confirm significant increases with the official range figures is fantastic news.”

The i4 M50 xDrive saw an even greater 13% increase over initial estimates, with a confirmed range up to 435 km. The i4 M50 brings xDrive all-wheel drive to the i4 and is the first fully electric performance model to come from BMW M GmbH.

The vehicles were certified with various wheel packages, as the diameter, width and aerodynamic properties of the various wheel designs all have various effects on range expectations.

The iX xDrive50, i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 xDrive are expected to arrive in Canadian showrooms by the end of February, with many being pre-sold through BMW Canada’s online reservation tool.

Two more versions of the iX, the M60 and entry-level xDrive40, have estimated range figures of 450 km and 322 km, respectively. Confirmed range figures for these two versions will follow. The iX M60 and xDrive40 are due to arrive in Canada in summer 2022.

BMW M GmbH enters its anniversary year with a new sales high.

Munich. For the third time in a row, BMW M GmbH ended the financial year as the global market leader in the performance and high-performance car segment. Indeed, the company posted record sales once again in 2021. A total of 163,542 BMW M cars were delivered to customers worldwide last year, a 13 percent increase on 2020.

This growth was spread equally between the High-Performance sports cars and Performance cars made by BMW M GmbH, with both product categories raising their sales figures to a new level. “This success is the perfect start to our anniversary year,” says Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “M is in a stronger position than ever as it celebrates its 50th birthday.”

New BMW M3 and new BMW M4 enjoy immediate success.

The biggest drivers of growth among the High-Performance sports cars were the new BMW M3 and BMW M4 models introduced in spring 2021. Fuelled by a vehicle concept focused squarely on emotionally charged dynamism and unprecedented diversity in the model range, the new BMW M3 Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 – 10.0 l/100 km [27.7 – 28.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 231 – 227 g/km as per WLTP), new BMW M4 Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 10.1 – 9.9 l/100 km [28.0 – 28.5 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 230 – 226 g/km as per WLTP) and new BMW M4 Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 233 – 231 g/km as per WLTP) got off to an extremely successful start. The latest model generation is the first to offer customers two output levels topping out at 375 kW/510 hp, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox or the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

“The response to the new generation of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 has been simply overwhelming,” reports Timo Resch, Vice President Customer, Brand and Sales at BMW M GmbH. “We can therefore expect demand for these iconic sports cars to continue on an upward curve in 2022.”

Also making a powerful contribution to the latest rise in High-Performance model sales at BMW M GmbH were the BMW X5 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.6 – 13.3 l/100 km [20.8 – 21,2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 308 – 303 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW X6 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.4 – 13.1 l/100 km [21.1 – 21.6 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 305 – 299 g/km as per WLTP). Following the successful market launch of the latest model generation the previous year, the charismatic High-Performance sports cars in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé segment – both powered by a 460 kW/625 hp V8 engine – increased their sales figures once again in 2021.

Alluring and in demand: the BMW M models in the BMW 4 Series range.

The dynamic excellence, agility and precision for which M is renowned also enabled the brand’s Performance models to delight and excite a wide range of customers over the past year. Credit for the latest boost to sales goes above all to the M models based on the new BMW 4 Series. Particularly popular were the variants of the new BMW 4 Series Coupé, whose line-up consists of the BMW M440i Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.1 – 7.4 l/100 km [34.8 – 38.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 184 – 167 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW M440i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.2 – 7.5 l/100 km [34.5 – 37.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 186 – 170 g/km as per WLTP) powered by a 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, and the BMW M440d xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 6.3 – 5.7 l/100 km [44.8 – 49.6 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 165 – 150 g/km as per WLTP), whose six-cylinder in-line diesel unit produces 250 kW/340 hp.

The latest BMW X models within the ranks of M’s Performance cars also proved extremely desirable. Indeed, the BMW X3 M40i powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine with 265 kW/360 hp (fuel consumption combined: 9.5 – 8.8 l/100 km [29.7 – 32.1 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 216 – 199 g/km as per WLTP) and the BMW X7 M50i (fuel consumption combined: 12.8 – 12.3 l/100 km [22.1 – 23.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 292 – 280 g/km as per WLTP) with its 390 kW/530 hp V8 unit both posted an increase in new registrations.

Looking ahead to an anniversary year brimming with highlights.

BMW M GmbH will continue its product offensive in this anniversary year with the addition of new High-Performance and Performance models. Highlights include the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.8 – 8.1 l/100 km [32.1 – 34.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 200 – 185 g/km as per WLTP) and the arrival later in the year of the first BMW M3 Touring and an exclusive special-edition model based on the new BMW M4 Coupé.

In addition, the BMW Group subsidiary – which was founded as BMW Motorsport GmbH in May 1972 and enjoys the status of an independent manufacturer – will also drive the transformation to electric mobility. Following in the tyre tracks of the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/100 km as per WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km) in the first half of 2022 will be the likewise fully electric BMW iX M60 (projected electric power consumption combined: 24.7 – 21.7 kWh/100 km as per WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km).

The most powerful BMW M model ever made points the way to the future of the brand.

The anniversary year will be crowned by the start of production of the BMW XM. The most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series production is also the brand’s first High-Performance model to employ a plug-in hybrid drive system. Its newly developed M Hybrid technology brings together a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor to develop maximum output of 550 kW/750 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft). The design of the BMW XM majors on presence and extrovert appeal and in so doing sends out a clear statement in the luxury segment.

Change of leadership at the top of BMW M GmbH.

Munich. With effect from 1 November, Franciscus van Meel will assume the position as chairman of the board of BMW M GmbH. He succeeds Markus Flasch, who, after three years at the helm of the BMW Group subsidiary responsible for particularly sporty automobiles, will be changing to the Overall Vehicle Development division. Flasch will assume the position within the BMW Group as head of the production lines Rolls-Royce, BMW luxury and upper class, in future also including the BMW midrange production line. During his term of office in the executive board of BMW M GmbH, the company rose to become the world’s leading provider of performance and high-performance-automobiles.

For Franciscus van Meel it is a return to the chief executive position at the top of BMW M GmbH. Between 2015 and 2018, he had already led the company, which bears the status of an independent automobile manufacturer. In the meantime, van Meel has also been, inter alia, responsible for the Rolls-Royce product line as well as for the BMW luxury and upper class. Under his leadership, the BMW Group’s new technology flagship, the BMW iX, was brought to series-production readiness. Van Meel also headed development of the forthcoming purely electrically powered model variants. With this experience in hand, he brings along the ideal prerequisites to also shape the next stages already commenced on the way to electrification at the BMW M GmbH. The first highlight of van Meel’s second term of office has already been fixed: 2022 will witness the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the company - originally founded as BMW Motorsport GmbH - during which many new high-performance automobiles will be presented. These will also include the first BMW M3 Touring, which is already in an advanced stage of its series development process.

During the past three years, BMW M GmbH has been influenced by an unparalleled model offensive. The list of innovations with which BMW M GmbH was able to achieve new record sales figures and assume market leadership ahead of competitors included the extended range of performance automobiles and new versions of the model series BMW M3 and BMW M4, which represent the core of the BMW M brand, as well as the absolute top-of-the-range models in their segment, the BMW M2 CS (fuel consumption combined: 10.1 – 9.2 l/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions combined: 229 – 210 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW M5 CS (fuel consumption combined: 11.3 l/100 km according to WLTP, CO2 emissions combined: 256 g/km according to WLTP). Official Car of MotoGP™: BMW M presents the new BMW i4 M50 Safety Car for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup.

Presenting the first fully-electric safety car from BMW M: BMW M GmbH, the “Official Car of MotoGP™”, will unveil the new BMW i4 M50 Safety Car for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup at the Motorcycle Grand Prix of Austria on 15th August at the Red Bull Ring (AUT). It will replace the BMW i8 Safety Car, which has previously led the field in the electric motorcycle series, which takes place on the support programme for MotoGP™.

The new safety car for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup is based on the BMW i4 M50 (power consumption combined: 22.5 to 18.0 kWh/100km WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km WLTP*), which will be launched in November 2021. The first fully-electric performance car from BMW M GmbH will provide intense driving pleasure. With an electric motor on both the front and the rear axle, generating a total output of 400 kW/544 hp, and M-specific chassis technology, it offers captivating driving dynamics. The emotional driving experience is underlined in particular by the drive sound, which has been developed specifically for electric BMW M cars. With all its properties, the BMW i4 M50 forms the perfect basis for use as a safety car in MotoE™.

BMW Canada announces 2022 BMW i4 pricing and pre-order

Richmond Hill, ON. Today BMW Canada announced the pricing and pre-order for the upcoming i4 battery electric vehicle. The first versions to arrive in Canada, the i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50, will have starting MSRPs of $54,990 and $72,990, respectively. Canadian pre-orders for the two vehicles, as well as the Canadian vehicle configurator, go live today at BMW.ca.

The i4 will be BMW’s first performance-oriented battery electric vehicle and promises to be a shining example of the superior driving dynamics that drivers have come to expect from BMW, making the i4 Canada’s first driver-focused, all-electric vehicle.

The i4 eDrive40 boasts a single, rear-drive electric motor producing 335 horsepower and an estimated 475 km of range. The high-performance i4 M50 has dual-motors, xDrive all-wheel drive, 536 hp and an estimated 385 km of range. The i4 M50 is the first-ever electric vehicle developed by BMW M GmbH. Both versions share a 83.9 kWh battery.

Provincial incentives, available in British Columbia, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories will immediately apply to both versions of the i4.

The i4 is produced in Munich, Germany and will be arriving at Canadian retailers in the first quarter of 2022.

The first-ever BMW iX and the first-ever BMW i4: Joint global campaign plays to the rhythm of Coldplay's new hit.

Munich. Local emission-free driving pleasure has never been greater than with the first-ever BMW iX and the first-ever BMW i4. The fitting soundtrack for the debut of the latest all-electric models is called "Higher Power" and comes from the British band Coldplay. You can hear the quartet's latest single in the TV commercials filmed for launching the joint worldwide communication campaign for the two new models. It delivers the perfect message with the lyric line "This joy is electric". The song for a new era of individual mobility marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration between BMW and Coldplay.

Back in 2014, Coldplay, made up of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman, performed before 1,500 fans at the end of their "Ghost Stories Tour" at BMW Welt in Munich. On the basis of the contact established at that time, a creative connection has now been established between the premium car manufacturer and the band, which has achieved worldwide success in the charts. This is based in particular on a common interest in sustainability in various areas of life.

"In the initial discussions we quickly realised: Coldplay and BMW share many common goals that go far beyond marketing," says Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President Customer and Brand BMW. "Based on this we developed a real co-creation in which the band actively contributed their thoughts and attitude to the design of our campaign for the BMW iX and the BMW i4." The shared awareness of sustainability gave rise to an intensive creative process between BMW and the British musicians and which will produce further co-created elements later in the year.

For the BMW Group, the premiere of the BMW iX and the BMW i4 is an important milestone in the current phase of its transformation towards electric mobility. The company expects all-electric models to account for at least 50 percent of its global vehicle sales as early as 2030. The Coldplay musicians are looking for innovative ways to combine their popularity and performances in front of thousands of enthusiastic fans with a positive impact with regard to sustainability. The song was played for the first time by French astronaut Thomas Pesquet on the International Space Station. Shortly after, the band played its first live set of 2021 for earthly audiences in a special livestream from the site of Glastonbury Festival.

The New 2022 BMW i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50

Richmond Hill, ON – June 1, 2021…Today, BMW is proud to announce the newest additions to the BMW i brand, the i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 models. The i4 M50 is the first fully-electric performance model to come from BMW M GmbH. The i4 blends the functionality and space of the gran coupé design with the instantaneous power delivery of BMW’s latest 5^th generation eDrive. Class-leading driving dynamics and long-distance comfort, elegant design, uncompromising workmanship, cutting-edge user-vehicle interface and advanced infotainment and driving assistance technologies all combine to deliver a zero-emissions BMW worthy of the Ultimate Driving Machine moniker.

Power is provided by BMW’s latest 5^th generation eDrive technology which combines the electric motors, power electronics, charging system and high-voltage battery. BMW Group has been producing battery modules and high-voltage batteries since 2013 and this in-house experience shows, with the latest generation of batteries, found in the i4, having a maximum DC fast charging capacity of up to 200 kW and AC Level 2 charging of up to 11 kW.

Sustainability and Reduced Carbon Footprint

Sustainability is an integral part of the development of the new BMW i4, from the sourcing of materials to the production of the i4 itself and to the recycling of its components in the future. Every step of the value chain was carefully looked at the reduce the carbon footprint of the i4 to the absolutely lowest level possible.

Steps taken by the BMW Group include commitments from all battery cell suppliers for 5^thgeneration BMW eDrive technology to only use electricity from renewable sources. The aluminum electric motor cases are manufactured from purely green energy. Only locally-generated hydroelectric power is used for the i4’s production at BMW Group Plant Munich.

Monitored Raw Materials Sourcing

The high-voltage NMC-811 batteries in the BMW i4 contain less than 10 percent cobalt content. In addition, the BMW Group procures the required cobalt for its battery cell production itself and then makes it available to the battery cell suppliers. The lithium required for battery cell production is likewise obtained under transparent conditions that are monitored by the BMW Group. The BMW Group sources the lithium used in the high-voltage battery pack on board the BMW i4 from hard-rock deposits in Australia and passes it on to the battery cell makers. The company can therefore ensure that environmental and sustainability standards are observed during the extraction and processing of cobalt and lithium and that there are no violations of human rights.

The electric motors for the BMW i4 are made without the use of rare earth materials, allowing the BMW Group to not be reliant on their availability. The proportion of secondary aluminum used in the i4 helps to make manufacturing more sustainable. Targeted use of recycling methods for this high-grade lightweight metal can lead to a substantial reduction in the energy-intensive use of primary aluminum, which also generates high levels of CO₂ emissions when conventional manufacturing techniques are employed. Besides this, recycled plastics are used in many i4 components.

Driving Dynamics

The ingredients which make up the experience of driving a BMW include instantaneous power delivery, excellent traction and directional stability, neutral steering behaviour, precisely controllable handling even under maximum lateral acceleration, superb stopping power and an excellent balance between sportiness and ride comfort in everyday driving and on long trips alike. The new BMW i4 delivers all these attributes with zero tailpipe emissions. The 5^th generation eDrive technology offers instant torque-on-demand while the location of the high-voltage battery low in the vehicle’s floor reduces the centre of gravity for improved handling.

Thanks to the battery module, the i4’s centre of gravity is 33 mm (BMW i4 M50) or 53 mm (BMW i4 eDrive40) lower than on a 3 Series Sedan.

The rigid body structure and sophisticated chassis design impart superb agility, especially for the new i4 M50, the first purely electric performance model from BMW M GmbH.

Chassis technology includes lift-related shock absorbers, rear air suspension, electromechanical steering with Servotronic function, integrated braking system, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and near-actuator wheel slip limitation. The BMW i4 M50 boasts fully-electric all-wheel drive, adaptive M suspension with individually configured springs and shocks, specially designed anti-roll bars and an additional spring strut tower brace in the front end, along with variable sport steering, M Sport brakes and M light-alloy wheels up to 20 inches in diameter with mixed-size tires.

The development teams at the BMW Group and BMW M GmbH harnessed their immense expertise, acquired over many decades of work, for the i4’s fine-tuning. An intensive program of testing was carried out at BMW Group’s test sites in Miramas in southern France and Arjeplog in the north of Sweden to make sure that motor output, power transmission, chassis set-up and body attributes created a compelling driving package.

Electric All-Wheel Drive, Wheel Slip Limitation and Launch Control

With an electric motor at both ends, the new i4 M50 features an electric all-wheel drive system which increases traction in all road conditions, and which can optimize traction and handling stability by adjusting the drive torque, without the need for traction control intervention.

The fully variable system can choose the exact needed split, from highly efficient pure rear-wheel drive to all-wheel-drive for maximum traction. Normally, drive power is relayed solely to the i4 M50’s rear wheels to increase its efficiency and range. At higher levels of lateral acceleration or in response to wheel slip, the motor acting on the front wheels assumes the required drive power delivery to optimize driving dynamics and directional stability.

The BMW-developed near-actuator wheel slip limitation, which in combination with the electric all-wheel drive, enables the car to maintain optimum traction in a straight line. Specially configured for the instantaneous power delivery of electric motors, this traction control system is integrated into the motor management. This eliminates the long signal paths to the control unit for the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), meaning that the corrective inputs are applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation is fitted on both the rear-wheel-drive BMW i4 eDrive40 and the all-wheel-drive BMW i4 M50. The near-actuator wheel slip limitation is designed to bring the advantages of rear-wheel drive to the world of electric mobility in the BMW i4 eDrive40, whereas in the BMW i4 M50 it is set up for optimum, rear-biased distribution of drive torque between the two axles.

A Launch Control function is included in the new BMW i4. Activating it allows the driver to accelerate with optimum traction with the accelerator pressed to the floor. Torque oscillations when stationary indicate that the drive system is ready for ‘launch’, at which point the full combined output is instantly made available.

Rigid Body Structure and Chassis

A rigid body structure is paramount to excellent handling and comfort. The BMW i4 integrates the high-voltage battery into the body structure to further increase its torsional rigidity. The high-voltage battery pack is joined to the floor assembly by means of 22 bolts, while the battery enclosure is also directly connected to the front axle subframe.

The BMW i4 comes with a bracing package for enhancing body rigidity at the rear and with integral shock tower-to-front end struts at the front, where an aluminum shear panel combines with the high-voltage battery housing to form a load-bearing structural element offering even greater rigidity. In order to deliver the extra-sharp driving dynamics expected of the BMW i4 M50, an additional brace is fitted between the two strut towers that helps to give the BMW M model its greater steering precision.

The double-joint spring strut front axle has swivel bearings and control arms made from aluminum, with the resulting reduction in weight improving shock response on uneven road surfaces. Axle kinematics, track width and camber have all been specially configured to increase steering precision and the absorption of lateral forces during lateral acceleration. The model-specific elastokinematics help to ensure precise wheel guidance and increase primary ride comfort. This includes using a hydraulically damped torque strut bearing to reduce oscillation and vibration. The BMW i4 M50 also features an elastic bearing for the front drive unit in the front axle subframe that helps increase acoustic isolation from the body.

The rear five-link rear axle features control arms in an innovative sheet-steel construction together with aluminum wheel hubs and upper wishbones to reduce unsprung mass. Rear axle torsion-resistant control arms and model-specific elastokinematics contribute to precise wheel guidance. The electric motor’s dual elastic bearing is completely integrated into the rear axle subframe, combining with the subframe’s large supporting base to provide effective acoustic isolation.

Accurate Steering: Servotronic or Variable Sport

The structural rigidity of the body and chassis mountings provides for sharp turn-in response and great cornering dynamics. The electromechanical steering delivers excellent directional accuracy and low sensitivity to disruptive forces from uneven road surfaces. It always offers the driver accurate feedback and is free of torque steer, even during sharp acceleration or deceleration. The standard Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance offers two settings – one very direct and one more comfortable – that form part of the overall vehicle set-up activated by the driver using the Driving Experience Control switch.

Variable sport steering, which is optional on the BMW i4 eDrive40 and standard on the BMW i4 M50 combines the Servotronic function with a speed dependent variable rack ratio which makes the car nimbler when parking while increasing agility at moderate speeds and steering stability at higher speeds.

Lift-Related Shocks, Rear Air-Suspension and Adaptive M Suspension

Steering is not the only system which affects straight-line poise and cornering stability, however. Carefully matching the steering with the spring and shock tuning, gives the new i4 its balanced feel of performance and comfort.

The BMW i4 is equipped with standard lift-related shock system that generates linear damper force according to the changing spring travel, resulting in improved damping response. Body movement is noticeably reduced along with vibrations caused by bumpy road surfaces. Extra hydraulic damping on rebound at both the front and rear axle prevents excessive body dive when driving over large bumps.

The optional adaptive M suspension (standard in the BMW i4 M50) allows the driver to adjust the shock setting to suit the driving situation and their personal preferences. The front and rear shocks are controlled electronically and individually for each wheel. This increases agility and body stability during cornering, while also enhancing ride comfort. Damping force is adapted by means of continuously adjustable valves, which are controlled to adjust force as required in just a few milliseconds after factoring in longitudinal and lateral acceleration, vehicle speed, steering angle, body acceleration and wheel acceleration at the front axle.

Both i4 models also include a rear air suspension, whose automatic self-levelling feature keeps the car at a constant ride height when carrying a heavy load. The air suspension has been configured to increase ride comfort and sharpen handling abilities by greatly reducing body pitch and roll.

Integrated Braking System

The integrated braking system helps to eliminate unwanted pedal feedback during brake regeneration. It enables Brake Energy Regeneration at a maximum rate of 195 kW on the i4 M50 and 116 kW on the i4 eDrive40, thereby boosting efficiency and range. Thanks to the cutting-edge technology, the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions are combined in a compact module. The required brake pressure is triggered using an electric actuator, an operating principle that generates pressure more dynamically and ensures significantly faster and more precise interventions from the driving stability control system. The integrated braking system generates stopping power adjusted precisely to the driver’s inputs, while producing consistent pedal feel unimpaired by any pulsing as a result of wet road surfaces, significant lateral acceleration or high brake temperatures.

Light Alloy Wheels and More Advanced TPM System

The BMW i4 eDrive40 is fitted with standard 18-inch light-alloy wheels while 19-inch wheels are optional. The BMW i4 M50 includes 19-inch M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tires. Additional 19-inch and 20-inch wheels are optional.

A more advanced version of BMW’s standard Tire Pressure Monitor is found on the i4. The system’s sensors relay data on tire pressure and temperature for each individual wheel, which is then processed to generate corresponding readouts in the Control Display. The Tire Pressure Monitor also factors in specific data on the tires fitted, including manufacturer, dimensions and production date, which can now for the first time be scanned from a QR code at the factory or service partner. Exclusive to BMW, this system simplifies use of the tire pressure indicator in the iDrive menu. In the menu item for tire selection, the driver has only to indicate whether the vehicle is partially or fully laden to view information on both the ideal and current tire pressures and decide whether there is any need to adjust them.

A digital tire diagnosis function helps advise the owner of tire wear by processing the data from the Tire Pressure Monitor in the BMW backend together with the pressure, temperature and wheel speed readings to forecast the remaining tire life. Customers can be notified via the My BMW App, for example, if action needs to be taken.

Intelligent Lightweight Design and Optimized Aerodynamics.

Intelligent lightweight design of the body and chassis allow both the weight and the functional properties of the relevant components to be optimized for superior rigidity and crash safety. The BMW i4 uses an engine side member made from extruded aluminum and die-cast aluminum spring struts. The hood and front fenders are made of aluminum. The exceptionally rigid passenger cell is built from hot-stamped steels and aluminum alloys.

The excellent aerodynamic attributes of the i4 deliver drag coefficient (C_d) of just 0.24 for the i4 eDrive40 and 0.25 for the i4 M50. All areas of the body have been crafted according to aerodynamic principles, from the front bumper to the exterior mirrors to the tailgate’s optional integral spoiler lip. The high-voltage battery housing, the motor compartment shielding and the cover for the torsion struts form a continuous surface with seamless transitions to improve air flow along the underbody. Other measures include a front spoiler, air guides in front of the wheels, embedded channels that optimize airflow and cover panels for the rear axle and diffuser. The i4’s specially designed lightweight rear diffuser is made from textile-based raw materials and helps to both reduce weight and direct the airflow more efficiently.

Active air flap control at the bottom of the otherwise completely blocked off BMW kidney grille reduces the car’s aerodynamic drag even further. The flaps can be adjusted in ten stages, allowing cooling air to be supplied to the drive system, high-voltage battery, brakes and air conditioning system in precise quantities. Air Curtains at the outer edges of the front bumper guide the oncoming air along the wheels. The standard light-alloy wheels feature an aerodynamically optimized design. There is also the option of BMW Individual aerodynamic wheels with inserts between the spokes whose flat design ensures a far smoother airflow.

Rare Earth Material-Free Electric Motors

The BMW i4 features one electrically excited synchronous motor driving the rear axle on the i4 eDrive40 and two motors, driving both the front and rear axles, on the i4 M50. The drive system’s high efficiency and cutting-edge NMC-811 battery cell technology give the car a long operating range and exceptional everyday usability. The extremely powerful charging technology is capable of 200 kW charging capacity for high-power DC charging.

The BMW i4 M50 is powered by a front 255 hp electric motor and a rear 308 hp motor, combined for a maximum output of 536 hp. The single rear electric motor in the BMW i4 eDrive40 delivers 335 hp. Power and torque is transmitted to the respective drive axle via a one-speed transmission which is contained in the same compact housing as the electric motor. The electric motors developed in-house by the BMW Group have an efficiency factor of 93 percent, bettering the efficiency figures achieved by current combustion engines of less than 40 percent.

The excitation of the rotor in the BMW i4 motors is not induced by fixed permanent magnets, but the feed-in of electric energy. This allows the use of critical rare earth metals (required for magnetic components) to be avoided altogether in the manufacture of the rotor.

Sport Boost Function for the i4 M50

A specially designed boost function that can be activated on demand by the driver is available whenever SPORT mode is engaged and is used to unleash the maximum output of both motors for quickest acceleration. The Sport Boost function increases the system’s combined drive power by 67 hp to its maximum of 536 hp for over ten seconds. At the same time, combined torque is upped by 48 lb-ft to 586 lb-ft. The extra burst of acceleration is accompanied by an M-specific soundtrack.

To allow maximum power to be summoned in situations where the car’s performance capabilities are being really put to the test, the Sport Boost function can be activated several times in succession if the high-voltage battery has enough charge. Every time the driver accelerates, a fuel gauge-style icon in the instrument cluster shows how much extra power is available and for how long.

Adaptive Energy Recuperation

Adaptive and individually regulated recuperation means the intensity of the brake energy recuperation can be adapted to the road situation, as detected by data from the navigation system and the sensors used by the driver assistance systems. Just before reaching a turn, a traffic light at a junction or a section of road with a lower speed limit, for example, a very high level of recuperation will be activated as soon as the driver releases the accelerator. When approaching a vehicle ahead, the drive unit will again switch over to the generator function in order to feed energy back into the high-voltage battery. When combined with an anticipatory style of driving, adaptive recuperation allows more than 90 percent of all deceleration to be performed using Brake Energy Regeneration alone, without any need to trouble the braking system.

On the open road, the coasting function enhances comfort and efficiency with no drive power whenever the driver eases off the accelerator. Adaptive adjustments according to the driving situation are carried out when the navigation system’s route guidance function is not activated, precise control of recuperation enabling instantaneous responses to changes in the situation. If the i4 approaches closer to a vehicle ahead while coasting, for example, recuperation will be initiated immediately to slow the car down.

Adaptive recuperation is one of the standard settings activated when the driving position D is engaged using the selector lever on the centre console. Alternatively, the driver can choose a high, medium or low Brake Energy Regeneration setting for all driving situations in the iDrive menu. Maximum recuperation power is 116 kW in the BMW i4 eDrive40 and 195 kW in the BMW i4 M50. In driving position D, the new BMW i4 pulls away at minimal speed as soon as the brake pedal is released, increasing comfort when manoeuvring and in stop-start traffic. And activating driving position B with the selector lever utilizes the maximum amount of recuperation available every time the driver eases off the accelerator. This allows the BMW i4 to be driven in urban traffic with virtually no use of the brake pedal. Besides generating the one-pedal feeling characteristic of the BMW Group’s electric vehicles, this intense level of recuperation also lends itself to very sporty driving with frequent quick switches between accelerating and decelerating.

Graphics showing the driving status and energy flow can be called up in the BMW iDrive system’s Live Vehicle menu. When either the COMFORT or ECO PRO modes have been selected with the Driving Experience Control switch, the control display clearly indicates whether the drive system in the BMW i4 is currently providing propulsive power, recuperating brake energy to feed it back into the high-voltage battery or has been de-energized / switched to torque-neutral during a coasting phase. Additional information is also shown to the driver whenever adaptive recuperation is used to slow down the vehicle. The driving style analysis that also appears in the control display encourages drivers to drive as efficiently as possible with its evaluations of acceleration style and anticipatory use of the accelerator.

High-Voltage Battery

The 5^th generation BMW eDrive technology includes a high-voltage battery with state-of-the-art battery cell technology. Volumetric energy density at cell level is up by 40 percent compared to the battery in the current BMW i3 (MY 2020). And the latest generation of high-voltage batteries display excellent qualities when it comes to performance capability, charging and discharging, durability and safety.

The 5^th generation BMW eDrive high-voltage batteries are particularly suited to reuse of their raw materials as part of a circular approach. The materials used in them and their design result in a recycling rate of up to 90 percent.

The high-voltage battery in the i4 is comprised of four modules with 72 cells each and three 12-cell modules. Together they provide a net energy content of 83.9 kWh gross and 81.5 kWh net. This allows the BMW i4 eDrive40 to deliver an estimated range of around 475 km and the i4 M50 an estimated range of 385 km.

Integrated Heating and Cooling System with Heat Pump Function

The BMW i4 is equipped with a standard integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin, together with its high-voltage battery and its drive system that operates using an exceptionally efficient heat pump function. The system comprises three cooling/heating circuits that can be interconnected by means of electric valves with a shared expansion tank. While driving at low outside temperatures, the excess heat generated by the drive units is used to warm up the high-voltage battery. The highly integrated version of the heat pump developed by BMW uses up to 75 percent less energy than the system in the current BMW i3 (MY 2020). A two-level cooling module, a refrigerant compressor, two evaporators, a water-cooled condenser and a high-performance control unit together ensure optimum temperature control for both the BMW eDrive components and the vehicle interior in any operating state and in all regular weather conditions. At extremely low ambient temperatures, the heat pump is assisted by a pair of powerful continuous-flow heaters offering 9 kW of heating power each. This ensures that thermal comfort on a par with conventionally powered BMW models can be provided very efficiently in any situation. The latest version of the heat pump makes use of ambient heat and heat from dehumidification – as well as the waste heat from the motors – for energy-efficient operation.

The integrated heating and cooling system also insures optimal temperature control for the high-voltage battery in highly dynamic driving situations with high power requirements and when rapid-charging from a DC charging station. If the navigation system’s route guidance function is active and has scheduled a stop for the BMW i4 at a fast-charging station, anticipatory thermal management will automatically pre-condition the battery beforehand. Warming up the high-voltage battery or cooling it down as appropriate means it will be at the optimum temperature for quick and efficient charging at maximum capacity upon arrival at the charging station. Thermal management takes several factors into account here, including current battery temperature, remaining range, the predicted charging rate and the amount of electricity due to be fed to the battery according to the overall route calculation.

High-Speed Charging at up to 200 kW

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in the BMW i4 enables an extremely high level of flexibility when it comes to using charging stations. Hooking up the high-voltage battery to a Level 2 Wallbox allows it to be fed with AC power at a charging rate of up to 11 kW. Using this method, the BMW i4 can recharge its battery from totally empty to 100 per cent in under 8 hours.

A significantly higher charging output with shorter charging times can be accessed by using a DC fast-charging station. The BMW i4 can charge its high-voltage battery there at up to 200 kW. When hooked up to high-power charging station of the type, the i4 can take enough energy on board in just ten minutes to increase range by up to 90 miles.

Exterior Design

The BMW i4 combines the hallmark sporting aesthetic of the brand’s coupés with the comfort of a four-door car and a practical appeal offered by the large tailgate. The elegantly stretched proportions of the new BMW i4, the short overhangs, slim pillars, doors with frameless windows and a roofline that flows smoothly into the rear underscore a silhouette that very much fits the BMW coupé mould.

At the heart of the front end stands the striking, BMW kidney grille, which is largely blocked off due to the small amount of cooling air required by the electric drive components. Depending on the specification, the car’s front camera is joined by ultrasonic and radar sensors integrated discreetly into the surface of the kidney grille. The front bumper of the BMW i4 also has only a small number of openings. These include the air curtains positioned towards its outer edges, which direct air efficiently past the wheels. Clearly designed surfaces painted almost entirely in body colour, precise lines and black inlays underline the modern, function-led character of the front end.

With their reduced and technically sophisticated appearance, the slim headlights of the BMW i4 fit in neatly with the surface design of the BMW kidney grille. The classical twin-headlight layout is enhanced by the addition of modern and minimalist U-shaped light elements for the daytime driving lights. The BMW i4 is equipped with standard full-LED headlights.

Large and smooth sculpted surfaces, the air breathers integrated into the side sill trim on the front fenders, flush-fitted door handles and the fin-like trailing edge of the passenger compartment mark out the aerodynamically optimized design of the BMW i4 when viewed from the side. The elegant stretched side window design flows into the Hofmeister kink counter-swing above the powerful shoulders north of the rear wheels.

As an exhaust system is not required, the lower section of the rear bumper is used to improve aerodynamics via the diffuser element. Below the long and slim, L-shaped rear lights with their highly technical design is an extremely clear surface treatment. Sharply cut vertical aero vanes frame the rear of the car to the sides. The lower areas of the skirts and rear have a sophisticated black finish, giving the car a lower-slung appearance and accentuating its broad stance. The backup assist camera is integrated into the BMW badge on the tailgate.

Model-specific design features give the BMW i4 M50 eye-catching looks to differentiate its more sporting character. The front bumper has the signature U-shaped design of BMW M models. Additional side air intakes optimize brake cooling. The BMW kidney grille surround and the vertical trim around the air curtains come in Cerium Grey as do the exterior mirror caps and the inlays in the outer edges of the rear bumper, while the air breathers, the side sill trim strips and rear bumper trim are painted in high-gloss black. An optional M-specific spoiler on the tailgate rounds off the distinctive, performance-oriented appearance of the BMW i4 M50.

Interior Driver-Focused Cockpit with BMW Curved Display

The interior of the BMW i4 fuses the clear design language and modern premium ambience with an extremely progressive approach to driver-focused cockpit design. The purely electric gran coupé comes with a very slim and low instrument panel, which provides the stage for the latest version of the fully digital display grouping. The innovative BMW Curved Display brings together the information display behind the steering wheel and the control display of the BMW iDrive control/operation system into a frameless, single-piece glass surface angled towards the driver. The 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display effectively merge into a single driver-focused unit.

The BMW Curved Display in the BMW i4 is held in place by a supporting structure that is concealed from the occupants’ view and appears to be free standing in the cockpit. The anti-reflective glass used makes it possible to dispense with the customary binnacle for shielding the readouts from sunlight, giving the cockpit area a remarkably tidy and airy appearance.

The rest of the interior design is focused towards providing a richly involving driving experience. The BMW i4 is fitted with standard sport seats and a sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons. The high centre console and flowing surface structure running from the instrument panel into the door panels generate a cocoon-like feel in the front compartment. In the BMW i4 M50, soft, raised knee pads on the centre console further accentuate the car’s engaging driving character.

Thoughtfully designed surfaces, premium materials and precision workmanship are key ingredients in the interior’s ambience. The Start/Stop button for the drive system is positioned in the control panel in the centre console, which also houses the BMW Controller and the buttons for the Driving Experience Control unit and electromechanical parking brake alongside the model-specific gearshift lever. Blue accents on the Start/Stop button, steering wheel and gearshift lever are a nod to the electric drive system.

Automatic Climate Control with New Controls and Integral Nanofiber Filter

The BMW i4 is equipped with a standard three-zone automatic climate control. It allows the driver, the front passenger and the rear-seat passengers to set their desired temperature and ventilation levels individually. The driver and front passenger can adjust the climate control system to their personal preferences via the control display or by voice command. Depending on the settings selected in the climate control menu, changing the temperature also prompts adjustment of the seat heating and seat ventilation control. This means individual functions no longer must be operated separately by the user. Moreover, those on board can see immediately if the system is currently cooling or heating the interior and if the seat heating or seat ventilation is activated.

The system also considers the number of passengers on board and where they are sitting. This is the first time all the vehicle’s temperature and comfort-enhancing functions have been controlled from a single source.

Cutting-edge nanofiber filter technology is used to purify the air inside the car more effectively, with nano-fleece and activated carbon layers further improving air quality in the interior. Nanofiber filter technology enables ultrafine dust particles and certain micro-bacterial particles and allergens to be kept out of the cabin. The pre-heating or pre-conditioning function allows the interior air to be purified effectively before the customer climbs aboard.

A pre-heating and pre-conditioning function is included in the BMW i4. This is activated through iDrive, or by smartphone via the My BMW app.

High Level of Acoustic Comfort, Large Glass Slide/Tilt Sunroof

The BMW i4 is fitted with standard acoustic glazing for the windshield. An automatically dimming rear-view mirror and heated exterior mirrors. The standard glass slide/tilt sunroof with a transparent surface bathes the interior in light. The 866 mm wide and 584 mm long expanse of glass extends into the rear of the car and includes a front panel which can be opened or tilted up.

Personalized Light Moods and Audio Experience

The standard LED lighting for the cabin includes reading and interior lights in both the front and rear, as well as lighting for the glove compartment, the storage compartment under the centre armrest, the footwells, the mirrors in the sun visors and the boot, plus the courtesy lights in the doors. The optional ambient lighting provides atmospherically rich illumination of the interior with precisely positioned LED fiber-optic light guides for the contour lines in the instrument panel and the door panelling. The lighting’s distribution, brightness and colour scheme can be configured in the iDrive menu. This option also includes the Welcome Light Carpet for the approach to the doors and the Dynamic interior light function, whose pulsating light signals indicate an incoming phone call or an open door when the engine is running.

The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional fitted as standard in the BMW i4 includes an audio system with ten speakers and a 205-watt amplifier. The Harman/Kardon surround sound system, complete with 16 speakers and a digital seven-channel amplifier delivering 464 watts of audio power is optional.

Acoustic Pedestrian Protection and BMW IconicSounds Electric

The electric drive system powering the BMW i4 produces not only zero local emissions but also almost nothing in the way of sound. In order to alert other road users that the i4 is approaching, it comes standard with an acoustic pedestrian protection system. Developed specially for electrified BMW vehicles, artificially generated and emitted through exterior speakers, the sound is active up to driving speeds of 30 km/h. It gives the vehicle a brand-typical soundtrack, without impinging on the comfort of those on board.

An unmistakable, model-specific acoustic experience can also be enjoyed in the interior of the BMW i4. Pressing the Start/Stop button sparks an inspiring acoustic accompaniment that builds anticipation for the all-electric driving experience to come. This sound production was created as part of a collaboration between film music composer and Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer and Creative Director Sound at the BMW Group Renzo Vitale. When underway, a drive sound developing a strikingly transparent timbre with spherical components delivers authentic feedback to every movement of the accelerator. The character of the sound alters according to the vehicle setting chosen with the Driving Experience Control switch. This means that in SPORT mode the car’s aural spectrum is more dominant and powerful. Drive system processes are registered within milliseconds and acceleration, load changes or recuperation given a suitable acoustic accompaniment. The drive sound developed for the BMW i4 M50 stands out with its particularly energy-charged tone. Movements of the accelerator are accompanied by a less harmonious but enticingly stirring and technical sound. Added to which, the acoustic differentiation between COMFORT and SPORT mode is extremely clear.

BMW iDrive 8

The new BMW iDrive 8, a new generation of displays, controls and software, plus extremely powerful connectivity and data processing give the BMW i4 all the tools needed to serve as an intelligent and proactive partner in any situation. The intuitive, multimodal operation is turned into a natural dialogue between the user and their car that seeks to precisely tailor all the functions controlled via BMW iDrive to the driver’s needs and preferences as the situation demands.

The new BMW iDrive was designed with a focus on dialogue-based interaction using natural language and on touch operation. Consequently, new available features include the expanded capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which uses a new graphic to communicate with the vehicle’s occupants, and the BMW Curved Display – the all-new fully digital display grouping in the BMW i4 formed by the information display and control display and angled towards the driver.

Natural Dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant

The new generation of BMW iDrive sees the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gaining additional skills to strengthen the personal relationship between the digital companion and the car’s occupants.

In communication between people, a lot of information is conveyed non-verbally. The Assistant’s new visualisation approach, featuring spheres of light in different sizes and brightness levels, gives it more space and forms of expression. This provides it with a clearly visible focal point and recognizable states of activity.

When the user speaks to the Assistant, it appears in a fluid animation and spreads out engagingly over the displays. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can distinguish who is talking to it and appears on the relevant screen area. A widget designed especially for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant enables rapid access to other settings and suggestions.

Advances have also been made in the functionality of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. An expanded pool of underlying data and information has not only made the digital assistant more intelligent; it has also enabled it to act proactively according to context. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant suggests functions the customer has not yet tried out. For example, if the driver regularly opens the window at a certain point, the Assistant recognizes the pattern and proactively suggests setting the relevant GPS coordinates – e.g. the entrance to a parking garage where a parking ticket needs to be retrieved – as an automatic opening point for the window.

BMW Head-Up Display

In the BMW i4, the customary BMW driver focus follows the innovative principle “Act, Locate and Inform”. The new BMW iDrive enables the screens in the BMW Curved Display and new 3+ generation BMW Head-Up Display to dovetail with one another more precisely than ever. For example, the driver is always given the relevant information where they can absorb it as quickly and easily as possible. When using the navigation system, for example, the Control Display provides a large map view (Inform), while on the display behind the steering wheel, current positioning information (Locate) can be shown in the form of a map excerpt. The driver is given specific instructions in the Head-Up Display (Act) in the form of lane recommendations or information on the distance to a junction where they need to turn off.

The driver can adapt the type and amount of content shown in the Head-Up Display to their personal preferences or the traffic situation at hand at any time. They can choose from various views focusing on a variety of content areas, e.g. navigation or driver assistance. A knurled wheel on the right-hand spoke of the multifunction steering wheel enables fast and intuitive selection of the desired view.

Remote Software Upgrade

The new BMW iDrive 8 further enhances updating the in-car software. New and improved functions can be imported quickly and easily over the air, either using the car’s built-in SIM card or via the My BMW App. Installation is subsequently launched by the customer and seldom takes longer than 20 minutes. Remote Software Upgrades are installed free of charge.

The driver is alerted to the availability of a new upgrade either in the Control Display (if the car is parked) or in the My BMW App on their smartphone. In the BMW i4 the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant now also issues a reminder that the new software is available by means of a special widget. Also new is the option for the driver to schedule the installation process. Here, the vehicle must first be securely parked in accordance with the instructions. Installation can then be carried out automatically at a pre-set time – meaning it can be done overnight as well.

Personalisation with BMW ID

When interacting with the new BMW iDrive, BMW i4 customers benefit from increasing personalization of the user experience based on the BMW ID. This is used for securely storing even more personalized settings and transferring them between vehicles. A PIN code can be created for the BMW ID associated with a specific key to prevent other vehicle users from accessing personal data.

When signing into a vehicle for the first time, simply scanning a QR code is all it takes to create a new BMW ID on a smartphone. If the user uses the My BMW App and is therefore already in possession of a BMW ID, this will be automatically imported into the car via the app when the QR code is scanned.

The BMW ID can be created and activated effortlessly and securely in vehicles with BMW iDrive 8 or BMW iDrive 7. Once the BMW ID has been imported, the driver will receive a personal greeting which will include the customized profile image the driver can create in the My BMW App. At the same time, personal settings for seat and steering wheel position, exterior mirrors, navigation system, driver assistance functions, display layouts, shortcuts and favourites as well as infotainment system settings will be imported automatically. Personalized suggestions from the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are also stored in the BMW ID, together with individually selected wake words and privacy settings. Once the BMW ID has been activated with the associated key or by selecting the BMW ID in the vehicle, the personal settings are instantly adopted. The customer can elect to save these personal settings to the BMW Cloud.

Creating a BMW ID is essential for using the new BMW iDrive 8 and the new, personalized functions that go with it. If a driver wishes to access personalized functions while signed in with a guest account, they will be prompted to log in with a BMW ID so that they can make full use of them.

Connected Navigation, Parking and Charging with BMW Maps

The cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps enables routes to be calculated significantly faster and more dynamically. To this end, BMW Maps combines real-time information with forecasting models that predict the traffic situation along the rest of the route. This allows arrival times to be calculated with leading levels of accuracy – by both automotive and smartphone standards. The data pool for this is provided by the HERE map, supplemented by knowledge gathered through the swarm intelligence of the BMW Group’s connected fleet (more than 14 million vehicles worldwide). The map data in the navigation system is updated over the air at regular intervals. Machine learning algorithms are also employed for data processing in the BMW Cloud.

With the arrival of the new BMW iDrive 8 in the BMW i4, the digital services for navigation, parking and charging are fully integrated into the cloud-based BMW Maps system in a user-friendly way and the intelligent functions are also being further expanded. The calculated traffic situation is now updated at one-minute intervals. Entering the destination in the vehicle is easier and faster, too. The one-box search facility allows addresses or place names to be entered in a search box, just like with an online search engine. And over 120 million points of interest worldwide can be located in the same way. The stored information is updated several times a week to ensure that BMW Maps is always up to the minute. The My BMW App can be used to transfer navigation destinations from a smartphone straight to the car. The BMW Cloud also contains additional contextual information on points of interest, such as ratings, opening times and images, as well as detailed information on public charging stations.

One of the key new and intelligent functions is “Learning Navigation”, where BMW Maps uses the habits associated with the individual BMW ID as the basis for learning and anticipates the destination the driver is likely to head for. This saves drivers the trouble of entering the destination again for regular journeys, especially the daily commute to work, when they nevertheless wish to be alerted to delays or hazards along their route. Information on the current traffic situation for the journey ahead and the estimated driving time are sent to the My BMW App prior to departure. An individually configurable Traffic Widget in the car likewise shows the predicted destination with the accompanying traffic information. Once the suggested destination has been selected, route guidance can be activated with a quick tap of the finger if, for instance, the system proposes an alternative route due to high traffic levels.

Improvements have also been made in terms of the help provided by BMW Maps when searching for a parking space. For roadside parking, a parking search route is calculated based on a probability analysis. This guides the driver to their destination along a route offering a very good chance of finding a free space. This approach is extended to vehicle charging: BMW Maps suggests parking spaces with additional charging facilities in the direct vicinity.

Connected Charging: Easy Charging Thanks to Intelligent Connectivity

Digital services from Connected Charging are designed to make sure that even long journeys can be completed easily and conveniently with the BMW i4. During the journey, the BMW Maps navigation system shows public charging stations along the route being travelled or in the vicinity of the destination. Colour coding is used to indicate charging station availability directly in the listing, together with further details such as the charging capacity offered and information on the operator and possible payment methods. When searching for charging stations, a filter can be added to show fast-charging stations only.

Integration of Smartphones Third-Party Services

Integrating Apple CarPlay® more deeply into BMW iDrive enables customers to use a great number of functions from their car in just the same way they do on their smartphone. One notable new feature when using Apple CarPlay is that the Apple Maps navigation map is shown not just on the control display but also on the information display in the BMW Curved Display. The corresponding navigation instructions also appear in the BMW Head-Up Display when route guidance is active. A special function for all-electric vehicles will be added to Apple Maps in 2022: if the distance to the destination is greater than the current range, Apple Maps will automatically plan a charging stop and modify the route accordingly.

Google Android Auto^TM offers customers access to a wealth of Android smartphone functions and content while driving. Wirelessly connecting an Android smartphone (with Android 10 or higher) to the BMW i4 will be quicker and easier than ever. Assuming Bluetooth is activated on the device, a prompt to connect to the car will be displayed automatically when the user gets in. Following confirmation, the device will be connected in just one step so that it is instantly ready for Bluetooth phone calls or Android Auto. Deep integration into BMW iDrive 8 will allow Android Auto content to be shown in multiple display areas, too. If Google Maps navigation is active, the map will appear in the information display as well as the control display, while navigation instructions can also be viewed in the Head-Up Display.

Intelligent Technology for Driver’s Assistance Systems

The BMW i4 offers an extensive range of driver assistance systems which are among the best on the market. The automated driving and parking systems at work in the BMW i4 stand out with their wide-range functionality. The around 40 assistance functions offered for the i4 either as standard or optionally enhance safety and comfort when driving and parking – in adverse weather conditions and unclear road situations alike.

The primary mission of the chassis technology and now also automated driving technology in BMW Group models is to open a positive and emotionally engaging experience for the customer. The focus is on the enjoyment of driving, and here the assistance systems play a key role alongside the model-specific driving characteristics. The BMW i4 offers customers the best of both worlds – they can enjoy dynamic driving pleasure by taking the controls themselves or use the assistance functions to make certain driving situations and parking safer and less stressful.

A network of extremely advanced sensors takes centre stage here. The driver assistance systems process camera images and the data collected by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the area around the vehicle, warn the driver of possible dangers and minimise the risk of accident using brake or steering inputs. Existing functions can be improved or expanded by means of Remote Software Upgrade.

Highlights for Level 2 automated driving in accordance with SAE International Standard (SAE J3016) include automatic Speed Limit Assist and route guidance when using Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. Both functions offer the driver particularly user-friendly assistance when choosing the right speed for the situation at hand.

With automatic Speed Limit Assist, the system controls the car’s speed by both maintaining the desired safety distance to vehicles travelling in front and observing speed restrictions along the route. It considers speed limit signs detected by Speed Limit Assist or by looking ahead along the route using data from the navigation system. If the relevant setting is selected in the BMW iDrive, the maximum permitted speed registered in this way is automatically adopted as the new desired speed.

The route monitoring function also helps to make long-distance journeys more comfortable. As well as distance control and the speed limits in force, it considers the nature of the route in automatically selecting the ideal speed to travel at. This function uses the navigation system’s map to look ahead and reduce the car’s speed when approaching a corner, a roundabout, a junction or an exit. If the intention to turn off is signalled by activation of a turn indicator, the system also ensures that the manoeuvre is carried out at an appropriate speed by slowing the car in good time. The system also adjusts the car’s speed before reaching a built-up area, instead of only braking once the car has passed the place name sign. Once the car has passed through the relevant section of the route at an appropriate speed, the system accelerates the BMW i4 back to the desired speed set by the driver or the permitted maximum speed.

Driving Assistant Professional

The systems brought together in Driving Assistant Professional evaluate the data supplied by a total of three front cameras, one front-facing radar sensor and four radar sensors facing out to the sides to build a detailed picture of the car’s surroundings. This also brings the Steering and Lane Control Assistant into play, helping the BMW i4 driver to continue along their current course – likewise at speeds of up to 180 km/h – with the assistance of smooth correcting steering inputs. Active Navigation is also one of its functions and helps the driver keep to the route calculated by the navigation system on multi-lane roads. When approaching a motorway intersection or exit, a display in the instrument cluster indicates the need to change lane. In preparation, the system adjusts the car’s speed to make it easier to steer into a suitable gap in the adjacent lane.

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, also contained within Driving Assistant Professional, offers even more extensive assistance by using sensor fata from cameras and radar to not only maintain the preferred speed but also automatically keep a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead – with a choice of four proximity settings. The distance information can be shown in the optional Head-Up Display. Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function brakes the car to a standstill if necessary. In slow-moving traffic, the vehicle pulls away again automatically once the situation allows.

Further components of Driving Assistant Professional are the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection, Emergency Stop Assistant and the Evasion Assistant, which also reacts to pedestrians.

A dedicated button on the steering wheel’s left-hand spoke ensures the systems are easy to operate. Pushing it once activates both the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go and the Active Lane Keeping Assistant. Assisted View in the instrument cluster gives the driver an overview of the activated systems and their functionality. The central area of the cockpit display is reserved for a three-dimensional mock-up of the vehicle and its surroundings. This is where the driver can see an image of the cars, trucks and motorcycles detected by the camera and radar sensors in the driver’s current lane, along with those in any adjacent lanes. Vehicles within a critical distance are highlighted. Icons indicate situation-specific manoeuvres that can be carried out with the help of assistance systems. In this way, Assisted View offers the driver a convenient way of checking the status of the driver assistance systems and the relevant courses of action with a single glance at any time.

Rear View Camera, Back-Up Assistant, Parking Assistant Plus

BMW i4 drivers also benefit from effective assistance when parking and maneuvering, thanks to the Reversing Assist Camera (standard) and Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear (optional on i4 eDrive40 and standard on i4 M50).

The optional Parking Assistant Plus includes Active Park Distance Control (PDC), which uses visual and acoustic alerts and automatic brake inputs to help avoid collisions with obstacles to the sides and rear of the vehicle.

Added to which, the latest version of the Parking Assistant Plus offers an even wide range of uses. It helps the driver to select and use parking spaces either parallel or perpendicular to the road. Suitable spaces are detected using ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle drives past. When selecting a parking space and aligning the car during the parking process, the system can now take its bearings from curbs as well as other vehicles. The system can also drive into perpendicular spaces forwards or in reverse. The latest version of the Parking Assistant Plus can be used both to enter and exit spaces. As well as the necessary steering inputs, it now also carries out the acceleration, braking and gear changes required for the maneuver.

Another component of the optional Parking Assistant Plus is the Back-Up Assistant. It offers the highly convenient option of automated reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not have a clear view, such as multi-storey car parks or entrances to courtyards. To do this, it stores the steering movements for any section the car has just driven forward along at no more than 35 km/h. The system is then able to reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 45 metres (50 yards) by steering it along the same line it took when moving forward. All the driver must do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. The Back-Up Assistant can back the car up automatically at a maximum 9 km/h.

Additional functions contained in Parking Assistant Plus provide an excellent overview in many different situations. Surround View including Top View, Panorama View und 3D View help to create a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings, which is shown from various angles in the Control Display. Meanwhile, the Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

BMW M GmbH and Hans Zimmer co-develop the emotionally engaging drive system sound for electrified BMW M models.

Munich. The future of driving pleasure is electric, locally emission-free – and characterised by a typically BMW sporting flair expressed not only in dynamic talent, but also through an emotionally rich aural experience. BMW IconicSounds Electric brings an unmistakable sound portfolio to BMW models powered by a fully electric or plug-in hybrid drive system. The collaboration between composer and curator Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale, Creative Director Sound at the BMW Group, has produced a distinctive drive soundtrack which customers will soon be able to experience in a version developed specially for electric BMW M cars. “Every BMW has its own character, which is reflected in the sound it makes,” says film music creator and Academy Award winner Zimmer. “So for the electrically driven BMW M models we have developed a drive system sound which accentuates their emotional driving experience particularly vividly and ensures their performance can be felt with even greater intensity.”

Hans Zimmer had previously been involved in the development of an inspiring ready-to-drive sound for electrically powered BMWs which instils a sense of excitement at the prospect of electric driving when the Start/Stop button is pressed. The latest chapter in this collaboration covers drive sounds for the BMW iX and BMW i4, including a differentiated sound for the M-specification version of the BMW i4.

While the hush of electric driving offers an unprecedented level of comfort, the driving experience loses a degree of emotionality. This is where BMW IconicSounds Electric steps in to put smiles on the faces of customers keen to experience Sheer Driving Pleasure with all the senses. In the future, electric driving pleasure will be enhanced by acoustic feedback to every movement of the accelerator. Like the on-board driving modes selectable at the touch of a button, the drive system sound also takes its cues from the driving situation at hand and the driver’s personal preferences. In the basic setting, BMW IconicSounds Electric employs a strikingly transparent timbre with spherical components to convey the basic character of an electrically driven BMW brand model. An immersive and pleasant atmosphere is created initially in the BMW i4 in COMFORT mode. But when the driver steps on the accelerator, the direct relationship between how the car is being driven and the sounds it makes is immediately revealed: the sound experience deepens as load and speed increase. In SPORT mode, in particular, the car’s aural spectrum is more dominant and powerful, the sound providing a constant commentary on the driving situation. Drive system processes are registered within milliseconds and acceleration, load changes or recuperation given a suitable acoustic accompaniment. Only when the vehicle is travelling in ECO PRO mode is the acoustic feedback reduced to nothing. Here, the silence of the drive system underscores the driver’s decision to adopt an ultra-efficient driving style.

In the version developed specifically for electrified BMW M models, the drive sound of the BMW i4 is charged with extra energy. Added to which, the differentiation between COMFORT and SPORT mode is especially strong. Overall, the drive system note displays a less harmonious but engagingly rousing and technical sonic profile. Acceleration sparks a rich intensification of the soundtrack’s development, authentically reflecting the car’s performance character. “When you press the pedal of an M car, you suddenly get goosebumps all over your body,” says sound designer Renzo Vitale. “We translated this feeling into a drive sound that expresses a fusion of superior power and flowing energy.”

Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale had already co-developed the drive system sound for the BMW Vision M NEXT revealed in 2019 and the BMW Concept i4 presented the following year. Numerous learnings from this creative process have now been channelled into the design of the sound for future series-produced vehicles.

The new drive sounds developed as part of the collaboration with Hans Zimmer are expected to feature in the BMW i4 and BMW iX over the course of 2022. IconicSounds Electric comes as standard in the BMW iX and can be specified as an option for the BMW i4. In cars with earlier build dates, the new sounds can be imported retrospectively via Remote Software Upgrade, should the customer wish. The new spectrum includes one ready-to-drive sound and one stop sound, plus a drive system sound which will be made available in the relevant version for BMW models and BMW M cars with electrified drive system.

BMW Group wins iF Design Gold Award 2021 for the design presentation of the BMW iX.

Munich. The BMW Group’s #NEXTGen 2020 streaming event excited fans of the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands around the world, but also impressed experienced design experts. Indeed, a jury assembled by the German Design Council named the innovative presentation format as an iF Design Award 2021 winner in the Communication discipline. The Gold Award – the highest distinction in the competition – was presented to the virtual design world premiere of the BMW iX which, as the highlight of #NEXTGen 2020, attracted particular attention. The jury noted that the reveal for the BMW Group’s new technology flagship had set new standards in communication: “Thanks to BMW, fully digital events have levelled up. Innovative and mysterious, this is high-end, state-of-the-art programming for our times. What a beautiful and inviting way to introduce the new fully electric BMW iX.”

Public curiosity in the BMW iX was stoked ahead of #NEXTGen 2020 by the informative and entertaining “Chasing iNEXT” infotainment series produced in the style of streaming platforms. The innovative unveiling was then staged in a specially created aesthetic using sophisticated studio technology and virtual effects. “The design team of the fully digital streamcast event #NEXTGen 2020 by the BMW Group pushed virtual production to the max by adding augmented reality layers, as well as creating beautiful design-worlds,” continued the statement from the iF Design Award jury.

“We are delighted to receive the Gold Award and would like to express our sincere thanks to the jury,” said Alexander Bilgeri, Head of Corporate Communications Strategy, Messaging, Communication Channels for the BMW Group. “Our infotainment series ‘Chasing iNEXT’ and the presentation of the BMW iX were key elements of #NEXTGen 2020. We opened doors for the film crew to our development departments which otherwise remain closed, and this enabled an unprecedented delve behind the scenes of our Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ). The design presentation of the iX provided the grand finale of ‘Chasing iNEXT’, and the iF Gold Award is a fantastic compliment to all BMW Group employees.”

With the presentation format chosen for #NEXTGen 2020, the BMW Group factored in both the technological possibilities of the digital era and the requirements of the ongoing pandemic. The content released online to date, which can be accessed at www.bmw.com/nextgen, provides a far-reaching insight into the FIZ. Presented alongside the BMW iX were a series of other trailblazing vehicle concepts, such as the MINI Vision Urbanaut and BMW Motorrad Concept CE 04, as well as fascinating and entertaining video clips focusing on artificial intelligence, the new BMW Driving Simulation Centre, electric drive systems, connectivity and virtual collaboration. Film contributions, interviews and panel discussions provided background information on the latest technologies, collaborations and future trends involved in shaping the face of individual mobility in the future.

The BMW Group also collected six other iF Design Awards this year. “The BMW Individual – Symbols of Suprematism” campaign and the artwork for “THE 8” earned the company two further distinctions in the Communication category. The BMW i Interaction EASE was presented with an iF Design Award in the Professional Concept discipline. And the BMW Concept i4, BMW M4 GT3 and BMW iX all gained recognition for their design excellence in the Product category.

The iF Design Award is regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious seals of quality for outstanding design achievements. The winners are decided by a jury of international design experts in an array of categories such as Product Design, Packaging Design, Architecture, User Experience, Service and Communication Design. Alongside exterior design, the criteria for the renowned award, which has been presented annually since 1953, include the degree of innovativeness, ergonomics, functionality and environmental compatibility on display.

A glimpse of the first ever all-electric BMW i4 at the BMW Group Annual Conference.

Munich. At today’s BMW Group Annual Conference the upcoming BMW i4 was revealed. “With its sporty looks, best in class driving dynamics and zero local emissions, the BMW i4 is a true BMW. It makes the heart of the BMW brand now beat fully electric,” said Pieter Nota, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales.

The BMW i4 is a fully electric 4 door Gran Coupé and will enter the market during the course of 2021, including a BMW M Performance model. Its refined balance of BMW typical sportiness, comfort and sustainable performance are unique in its segment.

The BMW i4 model line will be available in different versions covering ranges of up to 590km (WLTP) and up to 300 miles* (EPA). With a power output of up to 390kW / 530HP the BMW i4 can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in around 4 seconds.

Electromobility under extreme conditions: The BMW iX3, the BMW i4 and the BMW iNEXT undergo cold testing in the Arctic Circle.

Munich. BMW i is preparing to launch the next generation of solely electrically powered models. Three of the brand’s electric models are currently going through a key phase of their series development process at the BMW Group’s winter test centre in Arjeplog, Sweden. Together with the BMW iX3 already due to go on sale next year, the BMW i4 and the BMW iNEXT, being brought to market in 2021, are also completing an intensive test programme. Within the framework of comprehensive vehicle testing, their drive and suspension components are being put to the test under extreme weather and road conditions. The testing area situated at the edge of the Arctic Circle provides the ideal requirements for this purpose. On the icy surfaces of frozen lakes, on snow and in the bitter cold, the electric motors, the high-voltage batteries and the power electronics of BMW eDrive technology as well as the suspension control systems are demonstrating their high level of performance and reliability.

The latest chapter of the BMW Group electrification strategy will be heralded by a Sports Activity Vehicle. Starting next year, the BMW iX3 will already feature the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology for the first time. An exceptionally powerful electric motor and a high-voltage storage unit featuring state-of-the-art battery cell technology facilitate purely electric driving pleasure in a new dimension. With a range of over 400 kilometres* and the possibility to use DC charging stations with a capacity of 150 kW to charge its battery, the first all-electric SAV is ideally suitable for day-to-day use and long-distance travel. The BMW iX3 will be the first model produced for the entire global market by the BMW Brilliance Automotive Joint Venture at the Chinese production location in Shenyang.

The BMW i4 delivers locally emission-free driving pleasure combined with outstanding sportiness. The four-door coupe positioned in the premium midrange segment combines a dynamic design with inspiring performance and a high level of ride comfort. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology featured by the BMW i4 facilitates a range of over 600 kilometres*. Moreover, the electric motor’s spontaneous power development can be utilised above all to achieve a dynamic driving experience. The BMW i4 sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in a mere 4 seconds and reaches a top speed of over 200 km/h. The BMW i4 will be produced at the BMW Munich plant starting 2021.

With the proportions and dimensions of a luxury Sports Activity Vehicle, a fifth-generation electric drive unit and systems for highly automated driving, the BMW iNEXT embodies the future of driving pleasure in a particularly comprehensive way. As the BMW Group’s future modular construction system, it combines the latest innovations in the areas of design, automated driving, connectivity, electrification and services (D+ACES) defined by the NUMBER ONE > NEXT corporate strategy. BMW eDrive ensures a range exceeding 600 kilometres*. Furthermore, the car is equipped with the latest connectivity features and designed for Level 3 automated driving. The BMW Group’s new technology flagship will be produced at the BMW Dingolfing plant as from 2021.
