boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment
it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold
around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven
not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive
models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the
BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models
is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW
continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By
offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a
front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated
its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will
secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the
future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either
transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as
well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe
with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.

BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came
with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor
Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately
reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists
took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This
very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away
from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made
for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new
champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers
from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes
typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of
this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM)
system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the
earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of
the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed
either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC).
The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution
ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely
dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW
rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the
all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to
the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains
the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque
steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the
latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of
power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner,
further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i
“Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent
between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed
differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential
were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the
front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability.
This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was
offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and
including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the
BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now
electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured
multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear
power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with
driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate
clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by
electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system
monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the
Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about
brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a
class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and
precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics
even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In
the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered
in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle
concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first
Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving
dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the
time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in
this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of
38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic
control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X
(Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured
the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle
challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept,
there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at
BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s
all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation
of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up
the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle
segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered
even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only
premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was
introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon
extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely
fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive
worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to
continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving
situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the
electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability
Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position
and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s
first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike
conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least
one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of
oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively
corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on
the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring
models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced
in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold
worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its
second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid
drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly
established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to
present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical
dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For
the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined
with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power
split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled
agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on
overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further
perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile,
in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its
range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive
system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6
M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the
all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many
years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of
its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also
combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes
the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing
engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and
taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by
an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW
model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision,
BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal
combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time
before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7
Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive
Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6
Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5
Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe
models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with
the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers
a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and
contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is
available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW
also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second
generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW
xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This
was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined
its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new
front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step
in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system.
This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in
hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving
the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the
front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances
that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was
followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in
hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to
full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics
technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and
effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent
hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal
combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all
times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The
drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the
full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series
makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end
BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts,
and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in
October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow
intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active
Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

Donington

, 25 August 2015.
BMW will be lining up for the FIA Formula E Championship once
again in
2015/16
.
The second season of the race series gets underway in
Beijing on 17 October 2015, and BMW will be on hand as
the Official Vehicle Partner.

The futuristic BMW i8 sports car (fuel consumption combined:
2.1 l/100 km / 134.5 mpg imp; CO2 emissions combined: 49 g/km) will
once again see action as the Safety Car in the trailblazing race
series for electrically-powered formula machines. And the all-electric
(and therefore emission-free) BMW i3 (energy consumption combined:
12.9 kWh; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km) will perform the role of
Medical Car, as it did in the series’ inaugural season. Added to
which, a pair of BMW C evolution electric scooters and a
BMW X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid (fuel consumption combined:
3.4–3.3 l/100 km / 83.1–85.6 mpg imp; CO2 emissions combined:
78–77 g/km; figures based on the EU test cycle, may vary depending on
the tyre format specified) will be making their Formula E
debuts, as models from other BMW Group brands join the BMW i cars in
the eDrive family
.

“BMW i and Formula E make a great match,” said Jörg Reimann, Vice
President BMW Brand Experience. “The world governing body
of motor sport, the FIA, is branching out in a new and extremely
interesting direction with the FIA Formula E Championship – and we
have been on board from the outset. The series got off to a highly
successful start in its first year on the calendar, with its
all-electric formula racing cars, tight street circuits running
through the heart of major world cities and innovative ideas engaging
fans via social networks. BMW has been involved in Formula E from the
word go. It signed up as the Official Vehicle Partner to supply the
BMW i8 Safety Car and BMW i3 Medical Car. And this commitment has
given the company a platform on which to press its claim as a leader
in electric mobility. We’ve succeeded in bringing the
driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned to the attention of
millions of people in major cities around the world. The ball is very
much rolling now; in 2014 and 2015 we laid the
foundations for a successful partnership, and it’s one which will
continue into the second season of the championship in 2015/2016.”

Formula E will become an “open” championship in its second
season. Compared with the inaugural edition of the series, in which
all the cars were technically identical, eight of the ten teams will
line up for the new season with their own technology. The technical
changes will be concentrated on the powertrain – specifically the
electric motor, the inverter, the transmission and the cooling
system – and see the cars differing in terms of speeds, soundtrack
and, above all, efficiency levels over the race distance.

The
2014/15
Formula E calendar featured e
leven races in ten countries
on three continents.
Ten teams took their places on the grid for that opening season,
each with two drivers at the wheel of standardised cars
. Nelson Piquet Jr. wrapped up the title in the final race in
London – and duly took his place in the history books as the first
ever champion in this new series.

The new season will begin on 17 October 2015 and again take in
eleven races in ten countries.

BMW i8.

The BMW i8 is the most progressive sports car of our times and,
by combining the performance and appeal of a sports car with small
car fuel economy, created a new segment as the first sustainable
sports car. It offers zero-emission driving in town (eDrive) and
efficient sports car performance out of town, where a highly
turbocharged and efficient 1.5-litre petrol engine with BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology also comes into play.

With its revolutionary vehicle concept – which brings together a
carbon-fibre passenger cell, aluminium chassis and benchmark
aerodynamics for its segment (Cd: 0.26) – the BMW i8 represents the
company’s technological cutting edge.

The BMW i8 will continue as the Official FIA Formula E Qualcomm
Safety Car through the second season of Formula E. The modifications
to the two new Safety Cars are far more performance-oriented and
they have been adapted to meet the FIA’s technical regulations ahead
of the new season, which gets underway in Beijing on 17 October.

The new BMW i8 Safety Car is the world’s first vehicle equipped
for inductive charging with 7.2 kilowatts of power using
Qualcomm Halo™ prototype technology
. This allows the high-voltage battery of the BMW i8 to be fully

Richmond Hill, ON. The BMW X5
xDrive40e, the company’s first plug-in hybrid Sports Activity
Vehicle, charts the next chapter of BMW’s ongoing Efficient Dynamics
initiative. Benefitting from the groundbreaking work by BMW i on
electro mobility, the X5 xDrive40e combines the company’s
award-winning 2.0-liter Twin Power Turbo four-cylinder engine with an
electric motor, powered by a lithium-ion battery, integrated into its
8-speed automatic transmission.

This newest BMW SAV can travel approximately 21 kilometers on pure
electric power, ideally suited to short commutes and quick trips
around town. Working in concert, the gasoline engine and electric
motor puts out 308 horsepower and produces 332 lb-ft, enough to propel
the X5 xDrive40e from 0-100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds. As the name
implies, it features BMW drive, the company’s intelligent all-wheel
drive system, for optimal stability and traction under all
circumstances and road conditions. Early preliminary fuel economy
indicates fuel consumption of approximately 4.3 L/100 km (equivalent).

The 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e will arrive in Canadian BMW showrooms in
the fall of 2015. Pricing and full product guides will be available
closer to the on-sale date.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e is the first plug-in hybrid production model
from the core BMW brand. It combines the versatility and luxurious
ambience of a full-sized Sports Activity Vehicle with the superb
traction offered by the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system
as well as BMW EfficientDynamics eDrive technology for exemplary efficiency.

BMW eDrive technology provides exceptionally efficient performance as
well as the potential for all-electric mobility with zero tailpipe
emissions, ushering in a whole new form of driving experience in a
Sports Activity Vehicle. At the same time, the BMW X5 xDrive40e reaps
the benefits of the technology and know-how transferred from the debut
of the BMW i cars. The BMW i8 blazes a trail for seamless blending of
sustainability and The Ultimate Driving ExperienceTM driving thanks to
plug-in hybrid drive power. These traits can now be enjoyed in a model
from the core BMW brand.

Drive duo and permanent all-wheel drive for trademark
driving pleasure and maximum
efficiency.
Thanks to its duo of drive units,
intelligent hybrid powertrain control and permanent all-wheel drive,
the BMW X5 xDrive40e promises effortless performance and outstanding
efficiency on the road. Its drive system comprises a four-cylinder
engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a synchronous electric
motor integrated into the
8-speed Steptronic automatic
transmission. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery pack can be topped
up from any 120-volt/15 amp electrical outlet or – quickly and
conveniently – from the BMW Charging Station, as well as
at public charging stations. The high-voltage battery, which also
supplies power to the battery for the 12V electrical system via a
voltage transformer, is housed underneath the luggage compartment
floor, where it is particularly well protected in the event of a
crash. The BMW X5 xDrive40e offers a luggage capacity of 968 – 2,053
litres. The plug-in hybrid model thus provides all the versatility
associated with a full-sized sports activity vehicle in terms of not
just its driving qualities but also its levels of spaciousness.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e furthermore succeeds in fusing its versatility
and poise with a level of efficiency that simply places it in a class
of its own. Short everyday journeys up to 21 kilometers can be easily
completed with zero tailpipe emissions, while actual fuel consumption
is reduced substantially when driving for longer distances. Capable of
consuming zero fuel in electric mode, according to early preliminary
estimates the BMW X5 xDrive40e is rated at 4.3 L/100km (equivalent),
setting new benchmarks for efficiency in its segment. On longer
journeys, when both engine and motor need to be deployed, the
powertrain system which has been systematically geared towards
maximizing efficiency keeps the fuel consumption and emissions figures
far lower than in comparable models with similar power output. The
plug-in hybrid drive system in the BMW X5 xDrive40e produces major
efficiency savings in everyday driving situations when compared to
conventionally powered models in this segment.

BMW TwinPower Turbo and BMW eDrive technologies mated to
perfection.
The 2.0-liter four cylinder in the
BMW X5 xDrive40e has already won the coveted title of “International
Engine of the Year” three times, as well as having been named to
Ward’s “10 Best Engines”, and features a TwinScroll turbocharger,
High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and
variable camshaft control on both the intake and exhaust sides
(Double-VANOS). It generates a maximum output of 241 hp and 258 lb-ft
of peak torque.

The electric motor provides output of 111 hp, while its maximum
torque of 184 lb-ft is available from the word go in typical electric
drive fashion. This has the effect of boosting the engine’s output for
thrilling, instantaneous responsiveness and power build-up with
absolutely no delay when accelerating from stationary, as well as far
more dynamic performance whenever a quick burst of speed is required,
completing the 0 - 100 km sprint in just 6.5 seconds.

BMW xDrive permanent all-wheel drive even in all-electric
mode.
The power stemming from the two drive units is
transformed into effortless forward motion courtesy of the 8-speed
Steptronic transmission and the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive
system. The BMW X5 xDrive40e can be optionally equipped with shift
paddles on the steering wheel, enabling the driver to swiftly make
manual gear selections with the greatest of ease. Regardless of the
proportion of drive power being sourced from the engine and motor
respectively, xDrive ensures optimal traction in all weather and road
surface conditions, together with optimized handling stability and
increased agility when powering through corners. An electronically
controlled multi-plate clutch provides the basis for fully variable
distribution of the drive torque between the front and rear wheels.
xDrive is linked up to the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), making it
capable of acting in advance to counter vehicle understeer or
oversteer and to always direct drive power in such a way as to
optimize the handling dynamics.

Driving Dynamics Control switch and eDrive button allow the
vehicle set-up and powertrain control to be configured as desired.

The eDrive button on the center console lets
the driver modify the powertrain control. When the vehicle is first
started, the default AUTO eDrive setting is activated,
with both engine and electric motor working efficiently in tandem. The
electric motor alone is used for setting off with normal power
requirements, while the engine cuts in at around 70 km/h or when the
driver wishes to accelerate very sharply. In this mode, the
intelligent operating strategy determines the most efficient drive
combination at all times and switches to it automatically. The driver
can also switch to the all-electric drive mode setting MAX
eDrive, in which the vehicle is powered solely by the electric
motor. This mode is designed for comfortable driving with zero local
emissions without the engine being started, and offers a maximum range
of 21 kilometers at a limited top speed of 120 km/h.

The third mode that can be activated is the SAVE Battery
setting, which allows the driver to save or build up the high-voltage
battery’s energy reserves for a later point in time. When driving on
the highway, for instance, the state of charge can be kept constant or
even boosted in order to use the high-voltage battery’s power for
all-electric driving in urban areas later in the journey. In this way,
the stored electrical energy can be selectively deployed exactly when required.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e also comes standard with a Driving Dynamics
Control switch, just like the conventionally powered model variants of
the sports activity vehicle. This can be used to activate the vehicle
set-up modes COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO, which each have the effect of
altering the throttle mapping, the steering characteristics, the
responses of the 8‑speed Steptronic transmission, as well as the
characteristics of the standard Dynamic Damper Control on the
BMW X5 xDrive40e. The ECO PRO mode triggers efficiency-optimized
control of electrically powered comfort functions, such as the air
conditioning, seat heating and heated mirrors. Besides this, when the
driver’s foot is off the accelerator , the coasting function shuts off
the engine, allowing the vehicle to glide along without burning any fuel.

The modes selectable with the eDrive button and the Driving Dynamics
Control switch can be combined with one another at will, allowing the
powertrain control and vehicle set-up to be tailored precisely to the
prevailing situation and the driver’s personal preferences. In this
way, comfort, sportiness and efficiency can each be combined with
high-intensity hybrid driving as desired.

Instrument cluster and Control Display with hybrid-specific readouts.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e features a black-panel instrument cluster with
enhanced hybrid-specific functions added to its array of readouts. The
drive readiness display positioned in the lower part of the tachometer
switches from “OFF” to “READY” when the start/stop button is pressed.
The high-voltage battery’s state of charge is visualized in the form
of a battery symbol below the gear display. The Driving Dynamics
Control switch setting is also indicated, as is the operating mode
selected with the eDrive button. Depending on the selected drive mode,
information on the vehicle’s electric and total range, current fuel or
electricity consumption, recuperation of electrical energy in the
high-voltage battery and the progress of vehicle charging can likewise
all be shown in the instrument cluster.

Model-specific menu options and readouts are also available in the
iDrive operating system’s Control Display. An energy flow display can
be called up while on the move, illustrating in graphical form the
interaction between combustion engine and electric motor as well as
how energy is being fed to the high-voltage battery. Charging of the
battery from the power grid can also be controlled from the iDrive
menu using a timer function, which can factor in a
planned departure time as entered by the driver. In addition to this,
preconditioning of both the interior and the battery can be programmed
in the iDrive menu. Timer-controlled cooling or heating ensures a
pleasant temperature inside the passenger compartment ready for the
start of the journey, while the high-voltage battery can also be
cooled so that it is in an optimum operating state at the time of
departure. The electrically powered auxiliary heating and ventilation
function is also part of the standard specification on the
BMW X5 xDrive40e. It can either run on grid power during vehicle
charging or be powered by the high-voltage battery if it has
sufficient capacity.

BMW X5 xDrive40e: a classic sports activity vehicle offering
unique hybrid performance.

Exclusive, bespoke design touches on the model’s
exterior clearly identify the BMW X5 xDrive40e as a classic sports
activity vehicle while also making its unique hybrid capabilities
plain to see. The most noticeable feature is the charging connection
for the high-voltage battery located in the left front fender. Blue
light effects also appear here at the start of the charging process to
indicate the flow of energy. The exhaust system on the
BMW X5 xDrive40e has a twin-tailpipe design with trapezoidal tips.
Besides the model badge at the front of the vehicle’s flanks, the
“eDrive” logo, already familiar from the BMW i models, graces the
tailgate and door sills with their blue background as well as the
center console.

Apart from Dynamic Damper Control, the standard specification for the
BMW X5 xDrive40e also includes self-levelling rear air suspension. The
2‑zone automatic climate control that is standard on all BMW X5 models
extended to include an auxiliary heating and ventilation system
comprising an electric instantaneous water heater and an electric
refrigerant compressor. In addition to this, all of the optional
extras from the BMW X5 range are available, with the exception of the
third row of seats, the Adaptive M Suspension, Active Steering and
comfort seats in the rear. The BMW X5 xDrive40e can, however, be
specified with xLine and Luxury Line for the exterior and interior to
emphasize either the Sports Activity Vehicle’s robust, versatile
nature or its exclusive, luxurious character. The plug-in hybrid model
can also be ordered with M Sport as well as the Ivory White and Mocha
Interior Design Packages.

The BMW Navigation Professional system is another standard feature in
the BMW X5 xDrive40e. A wealth of BMW ConnectedDrive options are
offered, including Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go,
BMW Head-Up Display, the BMW Night Vision system with pedestrian and
animal recognition, Lane Active Blind Spot Detection, Parking
Assistant, rear view camera, Surround View and Speed Limit Info. All
driver assistance systems are also available when driving in
all-electric mode. The Adaptive LED Headlights, Comfort Access, as
well as the full selection of 19- and 20-inch light-alloy wheels, are
available to order for the BMW X5 xDrive40e.

Highly versatile charging options as well – thanks to
pioneering products and services from BMW 360°
ELECTRIC.
The plug-in hybrid design of the
BMW X5 xDrive40e provides the ideal basis for extensive use of the
electric drive system for highly efficient mobility, even including
urban driving with zero tailpipe emissions. Its high-voltage battery
offers a gross energy capacity of 9.0 kilowatt hours (kWh) and can be
topped up with energy from a home charging station, like the BMW i
Charging Station, as well as at public charging stations. With an
occasional use charger, the BMW xDrive40e can be charged from a
standard 120-volt outlet.

A tailor-made solution for safe, simple and extra-fast battery
charging at home is available for the BMW X5 xDrive40e under the
umbrella of BMW 360° ELECTRIC. The BMW Charging
Station is capable of replenishing the high-voltage battery at
a charging rate of 3.5 kW (16 A/220 V). As a result, it takes
approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to fully recharge an empty
battery pack. Charging progress can be checked on a graphic displayed
in the vehicle’s instrument cluster or on a smartphone using the
BMW Remote app. The data displayed on the monitor includes the
quantity of energy supplied and information on preceding charge cycles.

Under the umbrella of BMW 360° ELECTRIC customers are
offered an all-embracing service concept covering everything from the
supply and installation of the charging station to maintenance,
support and other services. There is also the ChargeNow service,
comprising a ChargeNow card that grants access to the entire network
of ChargePoint public charging stations nationwide. Beyond this, the
BMW 360° ELECTRIC portfolio also comprises BMW Solar and ParkNow Long
Term programs as well as maintenance, assistance and other customer
services that have been specially tailored to this model and eMobility.

Innovative new functions from BMW ConnectedDrive furthermore help to
plan journeys in such a way that the vehicle drives on electric power
alone as much as possible and at maximum efficiency at all times. The
Navigation Professional system fitted in the BMW X5 xDrive40e gives
drivers the option of calculating a hybrid-specific ECO PRO route to
an entered destination, which makes allowance for factors such as the
traffic situation, the route profile and driving style. The
intelligent energy management function in the BMW X5 xDrive40e
utilizes the available data on the route profile for all
navigation-assisted journeys anyway, together with real-time traffic
information. This forms the basis for anticipatory and
efficiency-optimized powertrain control that keeps fuel consumption as
low as possible while making intensive use of electric mobility, for
example when nearing the journey’s destination. On a longer journey
that goes through both rural and built-up areas, for instance, Brake
Energy Regeneration can be employed and the engine’s load points
deliberately raised at higher speeds to ensure there are sufficient
power reserves for completing the urban sections in all-electric drive
mode. What’s more, the locations of public charging stations are added
to the selection of points of interest on the navigation map whenever
route guidance is activated.

The BMW Remote app also comes in a hybrid-specific version and lets
the driver retrieve information on the high-voltage battery’s state of
charge even when they are away from the vehicle by using a smartphone.
The app also displays the location of public charging stations.
Efficiency evaluations for the last journey completed can be viewed on
the smartphone as well, along with the total distance driven purely on
electric power and the amount of fuel saved by using grid power. The
auxiliary heating and ventilation functions of the BMW X5 xDrive40e
can similarly be activated to heat or cool the interior prior to departure.

Production at the BMW Spartanburg plant: centre of excellence
for BMW X models and hybrid technology.
The
BMW X5 xDrive40e is being produced at the BMW Spartanburg plant in
South Carolina. This is where all other model variants of the sports
activity vehicle are also built along with the BMW X6, BMW X3 and
BMW X4 models. It has been over 15 years since the first-generation
BMW X5 went into production. Since then, this US plant has evolved
into the global center of excellence for BMW X models.

The BMW X5 xDrive40e is assembled in parallel with both the other
model variants of the BMW X5 and the BMW X6 on a shared production
line. Special assembly steps have been added to the manufacturing
process for integrating the hybrid-specific components. The
high-voltage battery is manufactured in a newly constructed production
hall on the site of the BMW Spartanburg plant. All production
processes are subject to the same strict quality and safety standards
that the BMW Group applies worldwide. The BMW Spartanburg plant stands
out for its resource-efficient system of energy supply. It was here
that the intelligent Energy Data Management System (iEDMS) with
continuous and comparative power consumption measurement was first
implemented. Moreover, a large part of the energy required for vehicle
production is obtained from methane gas, sourced from a nearby
landfill, with the help of highly efficient turbine generators.

the world of the luxury Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). BMW is using
the New York International Auto Show 2014 to present what it sees as
the logical next step towards bringing about a radical reduction in
fuel consumption and emissions in the SAV segment.

The BMW Concept X5 eDrive succeeds in fusing the familiar brand of
driving pleasure generated by the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive
system and a luxurious ambience enshrined within an interior offering
tremendous versatility of use with a plug-in hybrid drive system. A
conventional combustion engine works together in perfect harmony with
the cutting-edge BMW eDrive technology to produce the brand’s hallmark
sporty drive coupled with a significant reduction in fuel consumption,
making it an impressive example of the effectiveness of the
BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy. As a result, the car is
able to drive on electric power alone at speeds of up to 120 km/h
(75 mph) and for a distance of up to 30 kilometres (approx. 20 miles),
while recording average fuel consumption figures of less than
3.8 l/100 kilometres (more than 74.3 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle.

The concept study underwent a series of detailed refinements in
preparation for its appearance at the New York International Auto Show
and is equipped with a drive system comprising a 180 kW/245 hp
four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a
70 kW/95 hp electric motor likewise developed by the BMW Group. The
motor is supplied with power from a lithium-ion battery that can be
charged from any domestic socket and has sufficient capacity to enable
all-electric driving with zero local emissions for a range of up to
30 kilometres (approx. 20 miles). To ensure a particularly high level
of crash safety, the high-voltage battery developed for the
BMW Concept X5 eDrive is housed underneath the luggage compartment,
whose everyday usability remains virtually uncompromised thanks to the
40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest and an almost level loading floor.

In addition to the settings that can be activated using the
characteristic BMW Driving Experience Control switch, three driving
modes can be selected according to requirements and the situation at
hand: intelligent hybrid drive with an optimal relationship between
sportiness and efficiency (AUTO eDrive), pure electric and thus local
emission-free driving (MAX eDrive) and SAVE Battery to maintain the
current charge level.

Majestic poise at its most sophisticated: dynamic, flexible,
luxurious, plus zero local emissions if required.

Thanks to the BMW eDrive technology that has been specifically honed
for this model as part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, the
concept car brings a whole new brand of poise and assurance to the SAV
segment. The formidable power reserves produced by its duo of drive
units, its outstanding levels of motoring comfort and the optimised
traction, handling stability and dynamic performance qualities over
any terrain courtesy of BMW xDrive technology all endow it with the
all-round sporty prowess typically associated with BMW X models, while
its landmark efficiency blazes a trail for its rivals to follow. The
ability to operate purely on electric power with zero local emissions,
especially in city traffic, puts a whole new slant on the SAV driving
experience that shows the shape of things to come. At the same time,
the plug-in hybrid drive concept does not impinge in any way on the
exemplary versatility offered by the Sports Activity Vehicle’s
interior or its distinctly luxurious ambience. In short, the
BMW Concept X5 eDrive shows itself to be supremely talented in every
way, deftly bringing major advances in cutting fuel consumption and
emissions into harmony with state-of-the-art functionality and
everyday practicality that never fails to impress.

A number of understated styling touches have been meticulously
incorporated into the exterior design to underline the groundbreaking
character of the BMW Concept X5 eDrive. The kidney grille bars, air
intake bars and the insert in the rear bumper are all finished in the
BMW i Blue colour developed for the BMW i brand, for instance,
creating a stunning contrast to the Silverflake metallic exterior
paintwork. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive also comes with body-coloured
wheel arches, specially styled roof rails, a connector for the
charging cable which – as on the BMW i models – lights up during
charging, as well as 21-inch light-alloy wheels in an exclusive,
streamlined design.

To make sure that the styling of the luxurious passenger compartment
echoes the highly sophisticated drive concept, light blue
double-felled seams adorn the Ivory White exclusive leather upholstery
covering the seats, door trim panels and dashboard. Further highlight
features of the specially designed interior include the Piano Finish
Black interior trim with blue accent strips, “eDrive” lettering
embossed in the front of the headrests, ambient lighting with a blue
hue, and an eDrive button that is also illuminated in blue. In the
luggage compartment lined in black velour, a transparent cover – again
illuminated in blue – affords a clear view of the high-voltage battery
for the electric motor.

BMW eDrive in a Sports Activity Vehicle: intelligent hybrid
technology promises outstanding efficiency and hallmark driving pleasure.

Electrification of the powertrain is a key component
of BMW EfficientDynamics technology and allows BMW to unlock
tremendous potential for reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The
BMW eDrive technology developed for this purpose comes in various
versions, each precisely tailored to the particular vehicle concept.
Both the BMW i3, the first all-electric production vehicle from the
BMW Group, and the soon-to-be-launched BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports
car are powered by BMW eDrive technology. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive
now follows in the tyre tracks of the BMW Concept Active Tourer
unveiled in 2012 by demonstrating how model-specific BMW eDrive
technology can be employed in plug-in hybrid models from the BMW core brand.

This is the first time that BMW eDrive technology has been hooked up
with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. The
BMW Concept X5 eDrive boasts the superior driving characteristics that
stem from the permanent and fully variable distribution of drive power
between the front and rear wheels. Regardless of the selected driving
mode, the drive power generated by the electric motor, the combustion
engine or the two units acting in unison is channelled swiftly and
precisely to wherever it can be converted into forward propulsion most
effectively. This allows the concept study to deliver all the
qualities that SAVs are renowned for – superb traction and optimised
handling stability in all weather and road conditions coupled with
enhanced agility when taking corners at speed – in remarkably
efficient fashion. The highly versatile and sporty driving abilities
of the BMW Concept X5 eDrive are accompanied by average fuel
consumption in the EU test cycle of less than 3.8 l/100 km (more than
74.3 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of under 90 grams per kilometre.

Both driving pleasure and efficiency in the BMW Concept X5 eDrive are
given an extra boost by an electric motor generating a maximum output
of 70 kW/95 hp together with the instantaneous power delivery that has
become a hallmark of electric drive units thanks to the high levels of
torque available from the word go. The electric motor variant
developed for the BMW Concept X5 eDrive as part of the
BMW EfficientDynamics strategy also boasts sporty performance
credentials, a compact design and optimised weight. The electric motor
alone is capable of propelling the BMW Concept X5 eDrive to a top
speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). With 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft) of
torque on tap from stationary, it gives the vehicle wonderfully
spontaneous response that translates into thrillingly dynamic
acceleration. It also works in tandem with the combustion engine to
boost its power significantly whenever a quick burst of speed is
called for. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive is able to complete the standard
sprint from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 7.0 seconds.

The task of ensuring the engine and electric motor team up together
to optimum effect is handled by the power electronics that were
developed by the BMW Group and apply the same basic concept used in
the BMW i cars. The power electronics combine a liquid-cooled inverter
for driving the electric motor, supplying energy to the onboard
electrical system from the high-voltage battery and for centralised
control of the hybrid-specific drive functions into a single
integrated system.

ECO PRO mode and all-electric driving:
BMW EfficientDynamics
à la carte.
As in other members of the current BMW production line-up, the
Driving Experience Control switch in the BMW Concept X5 eDrive can be
used to select not only the COMFORT and SPORT settings but also the
ECO PRO mode that fosters a particularly economical driving style.
This driving mode is programmed for highly intelligent hybrid
functionality, whereby the energy management system orchestrates the
interaction between engine and electric drive unit as the driving
situation changes in order to maximise efficiency. As a further
component of the BMW EfficientDynamics technology, a hybrid-specific
Proactive Driving Assistant has also been included, which works
together with the navigation system to allow the route profile, any
speed restrictions and the traffic situation to be factored in as well
for the purpose of drive management.

In addition to this, the driver also has the option of engaging the
all-electric driving mode by switching from AUTO eDrive to the
MAX eDrive setting at the push of a button. With the battery fully
charged, the vehicle is able to cover a distance of up to
30 kilometres (approx. 20 miles) on electric power alone, which means
zero local emissions. There is also a SAVE Battery mode, which can be
selected to deliberately preserve the battery’s energy capacity. This
might be the case, for example, if a longer journey is due to end with
a final stage through urban traffic that drivers wish to complete in
all-electric mode.

Everyday usability: flexible charging scenarios and impressive viability.
In order to capitalise as much as possible on the superior
efficiency of its electrified powertrain, the BMW Concept X5 eDrive is
designed as a plug-in hybrid, allowing its high-voltage battery’s
energy levels to be renewed from any domestic power socket, a special
Wallbox that can handle higher currents, or at a public high-speed
charging station. The Wallbox Pro is designed for installation in the
customer’s garage and offers complete ease of use as well as
exceptionally short battery recharging times, thanks to a maximum
charging rate of 7.4 kW. It is controlled by means of a
high-resolution touchscreen including proximity sensor, while LED
light strips provide an additional indication of the charge status.
The built-in load management facility governs the charging current in
accordance with the current draw on the household electricity supply.
The Wallbox Pro even makes it possible to use home-generated
electricity, such as that obtained from solar panels. There is also a
function for creating different user profiles and displaying the
respective charging histories. On request, the corresponding data can
be sent online, e.g. for billing purposes.

The high degree of flexibility drivers can enjoy when it comes to
choosing an energy source is given an added boost by the charging
cable that is carried in the vehicle. The battery unit is located
underneath the luggage compartment, so that there is only a small loss
of load capacity overall – the luggage compartment is able to hold two
large suitcases or four 46-inch golf bags. The SAV’s excellent
versatility – helped by the 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrest – has
been fully retained, along with its ample sense of spaciousness and
the impressive level of comfort offered to the occupants of all five seats.

Intelligent connectivity for yet greater efficiency.

Innovative functions from BMW ConnectedDrive assist
with planning journeys in such a way as to maximise the amount of time
spent driving on electric power alone. In the BMW Concept X5 eDrive,
the current electric range thus appears as a numerical value in the
instrument cluster. Intelligent connectivity enables the vehicle’s
dynamic range display to constantly make allowances for any factors
affecting the range, such as traffic conditions, route profile and
driving style.

When route guidance is activated, the location of local charging
stations is added to the selection of points of interest shown on the
navigation map. Drivers are able to call up charging stations situated
along the planned route or at their destination, while the system
additionally notifies them of the charging time needed to fully
replenish the battery’s energy levels. Furthermore, information
graphics indicating the current operating status when engine and motor
work together in unison, the impact of the driving style on vehicle
efficiency and the fuel consumption history for selected periods of
time can be shown in the iDrive operating system’s Control Display,
along with other information.

Drivers are also able to view all information relating to the
battery’s charge level and electric driving range on their smartphone.
A Remote app from BMW ConnectedDrive that has been specially designed
with electric mobility in mind even enables them to control the
charging process from their phone. It also allows the vehicle to be
pre-programmed whenever it is connected to an electricity supply: the
heating and air conditioning systems can be activated remotely in this
way to get the passenger compartment to a pleasant temperature ready
for the start of the journey.

Press Contact: Frank Strebe
Tel: +1-905-428-5005
E-mail: frank.strebe@bmwgroup.ca

Press Release,BMW,Concept Vehicles & Design,X5,F15,Product
