Munich. The new BMW iX3 is in the spotlight at CES
2026. For the first time, the enhanced, AI-powered BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant with Alexa+ technology will be presented to the
public. As the debut model for the Neue Klasse, the BMW iX3 showcases
groundbreaking innovations that will shape the entire model range of
the brand in the future. By 2027, the technologies of the Neue Klasse
will be integrated into a total of 40 new models and model updates
from BMW.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant expanded with Amazon
Alexa+.
One year after the world premiere of the new BMW
Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X at CES 2025, visitors to
this year’s CES can experience the revolutionary user-interaction
concept firsthand in the BMW iX3. With a balanced combination of
digital functions and physical elements, it elevates intuitive
operation according to BMW’s guiding principle ‘Hands on the Wheel,
Eyes on the Road’ to a new level of driver orientation. Built on the
technological foundation of a software-defined vehicle, the customer
experience in the BMW iX3 continues to evolve. For
the first time, BMW presents the next generation AI-powered
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. BMW is the first
manufacturer to expand its voice assistant with the AI assistant
Amazon Alexa+. This enables intuitive and intelligent interaction
between passengers and the vehicle in a natural dialogue. The
interaction includes the operation of vehicle functions as well as
access to information and knowledge beyond the vehicle. For the first
time, passengers can ask multiple questions in a single
sentence—covering both your vehicle’s features and e.g. general
knowledge topics.

The integration of Amazon Alexa+ into the BMW Intelligent Personal
Assistant represents a technological leap forward that focuses on
added value for the customer. The AI technology used in the BMW
Intelligent Personal Assistant is a Large Language Model (LLM), a
generative AI that understands language and is capable of formulating
its own responses. Starting in the second half of 2026 at the latest,
this further development will be gradually rolled out in Germany and
the USA across all BMW models equipped with BMW Operating System 9 and X.

BMW iX3 transforms waiting time into entertainment: stream a
movie, play a video game or make a video call.[1]
The BMW booth at CES also focuses on the wide range
of entertainment options in BMW Operating System X. It offers an
extensive selection of apps, videos, and games. In addition to the
popular streaming service Disney+, customers in the
BMW iX3 have access to the Video App (powered by
TiVo™). This app enables video streaming on the central display when
the vehicle is stationary, with a continuously growing selection of
content such as news, live, and on-demand streaming. The portfolio of
the video streaming platform will continue to evolve.

The BMW ConnectedDrive Store will also soon include
the YouTube Music app for the first time, joining the
more than 85 apps worldwide in categories such as Music
& Audio, Entertainment, Gaming, News, Travel &
Local. YouTube Music gives customers access to an extensive
catalog with over 300 million tracks, including the official studio
recordings, remixes, live performances, and hard-to-find covers.
Zoom now allows video calls on the iX3’s central
display for the first time when the vehicle is stationary. As soon as
the vehicle starts moving, the video transmission stops, and the
conversation seamlessly continues via audio.

In-car gaming via AirConsole, as introduced for the first time with
the BMW Operating System 8.5, is also available in the new BMW iX3,
featuring world-renowned titles like UNO®️ Car Party!
A new highlight in AirConsole’s extensive game library is
Hot Wheels: Xtreme Overdrive™️ from Mattel,
available exclusively to BMW customers. AirConsole allows users to use
their own smartphones as controllers, so all passengers can play
together or compete against each other. Additional games and apps for
in-car entertainment can be accessed through the BMW ConnectedDrive
Store. Selected games in the BMW iX3 can also be controlled using
Bluetooth controllers from conventional gaming consoles.

Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology: higher efficiency,
more range, faster charging.
The sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology developed for the
Neue Klasse comprises highly efficient electric motors, fundamentally
new high-voltage batteries with cylindrical cells, and 800V
technology. The BMW iX3 50 xDrive is powered by two electric motors,
which together generate output of 345 kW/469 hp and 645 Nm (475 lb-ft)
of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds
and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). Its electric
all-wheel-drive configuration consists of an extensively upgraded
electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) with particularly high
levels of efficiency at the rear axle and, at the front axle, a new
asynchronous motor (ASM) distinguished by its compact design and high
cost efficiency. The combination of EESM and ASM is evidence of the
BMW Group’s commitment to technological neutrality within electric
mobility as well. The drive technology developed for the Neue Klasse
reduces energy losses by 40 per cent compared to fifth-generation BMW
eDrive technology, weight by 10 per cent and manufacturing costs by 20
per cent.

The new high-voltage battery concept with cylindrical cells for the
Neue Klasse also achieves significant advances. The energy density on
a cell level is 20 per cent higher than with fifth-generation BMW
eDrive technology, and the new concept also paves the way for a 30 per
cent increase in charging speed. The cylindrical cells are integrated
directly into the high-voltage battery (“cell to pack”), which
benefits energy density and cost efficiency. Added to which, the
high-voltage battery is integrated into the vehicle architecture as a
structural component to minimise weight (“pack to open body”). The
high-voltage battery in the BMW iX3 50 xDrive has a usable energy
content of 108.7 kWh, enabling a range of up to 805 kilometres (500
miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW Charging: short charging times, premiere for bidirectional
charging.
The advances brought by sixth-generation BMW
eDrive technology have a significant influence on the charging
experience, too. A maximum charging rate of 400 kW enables users to
fill their new BMW iX3 with enough energy at an 800V direct current
(DC) rapid charging station to add up to 372 kilometres (231 miles)
[2] of range in just ten minutes. The high-voltage battery
can charge from 10 to 80 per cent capacity in 21 minutes. Thanks to
the battery management tech with integrated switching matrix developed
completely in-house by the BMW Group, the new BMW iX3 can also be
charged from 400V DC stations. Upgrades to the battery preparation
also help to shorten charging times. The new BMW iX3 50 xDrive can top
up on alternating current (AC) at 11 kW as standard or 22 kW
[3] as an option.

Extensive bidirectional charging functions [3] are also
available for the new BMW iX3, meaning that it can be used as an
energy supply source for a variety of applications. The
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function turns the new BMW iX3 into a mobile
powerbank, which can supply electric devices with power while on the
move. Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) hands it the role of storage unit for
solar energy generated by home-fitted photovoltaic systems. And
customers can also hook their car up to the energy market via the
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) application and earn some money in the process.

The selection of standard-fitted and optional charging accessories
has been significantly expanded. For flexible charging during a
journey, customers can make use of the new Multifunction Charger,
which comes with several adapters for charging and discharging the
high-voltage battery. The new BMW Wallbox Professional (DC) enables
bidirectional charging at home or work. And BMW Charging offers the
option of cost-optimised /solar-power-optimised home charging.

In order to give owners the best possible charging experience, the
new BMW iX3 will be fitted as standard with an NACS (North American
Charging Standard) compatible charging port. This will provide iX3
owners access to the vast Supercharger network, while a standard CCS
(Combined Charging System) adapter will preserve access to other
providers from coast to coast, thus ensuring that iX3 owners are never
far from a provider no matter where the journey is taking them.

Heart of Joy: The Ultimate Driving Machine reaches a new level.
One of four superbrains in the electronics architecture of the
Neue Klasse, the Heart of Joy looks after drivetrain and driving
dynamics management. This high-performance control unit is responsible
for the drivetrain, brakes, energy recuperation, and steering
functions, and processes information up to ten times faster than
conventional control units. In this way, the potential of electric
mobility in terms of instantaneous power delivery, smooth power
transfer, agility, stability, and efficiency is fully realized.

Together with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack
developed fully in-house, the Heart of Joy calculates all the driving
dynamics parameters with a new level of speed and precision. The
driver and passengers in the new BMW iX3 experience a uniquely
harmonious and BMW-typical driving sensation whatever the situation.
Every movement of the accelerator, brake pedal, and steering is
executed directly and with assurance and precision. Supreme traction
and – thanks to the unique Soft Stop function – the smoothest stopping
process ever achieved by a BMW are among its other attributes. In
addition, the efficiency of the new BMW iX3 is optimized by the
integrated management of drivetrain, braking system, and energy
recuperation. In everyday driving, 98% of braking maneuvers are
carried out using recuperation only, without application of the
friction brakes. The only occasions these are called upon are under
emergency braking and during extremely sporty driving.

“Superbrain of automated driving” for the driver assistance
systems with of the next technology
generation.
Another high-performance computer brings
together all the automated driving and parking functions in the BMW
iX3. With 20 times greater processing power than in the previous
vehicle generation, the watercooled “superbrain of automated driving”
enables a significant technological advance with the Neue Klasse in
this area as well.

BMW Symbiotic Drive provides seamless
support.
The BMW iX3 uses its Symbiotic Drive capability
combined with driver assistance to create a completely new driving
experience. Whenever the driver wants to accelerate, brake or steer,
their inputs merge seamlessly and intuitively with AI-enabled
software. The result is a whole new form of Sheer Driving Pleasure. For
example, the automatic cruise control system is not deactivated with
only a light press of the brake pedal; instead, it is only switched
off when the driver brakes harder. In the same way, the lane control
assistance remains active even after light steering inputs by the driver.

With the optional BMW Highway / Motorway Assistant [4],
drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel permanently at
speeds of up to 85 mph / 130 km/h, while remaining attentive and ready
to intervene. The system assists with vehicle guidance within the lane
and can also perform automated lane changes when needed – a simple
glance confirmation by the driver is sufficient. With active BMW Maps
route guidance, the system proactively suggests lane changes at
highway interchanges and exits, which can be confirmed with a quick
glance in the wing mirror. The Highway Assistant remains active while
passing through interchanges and until the end of highway exits. This
allows BMW iX3 drivers to enjoy Level 2 driver assistance without
touching the steering wheel in even more situations.

The new Highway and City Assistant [4] also offers
innovative functions for urban environments, such as stopping and
automatically restarting at traffic lights. Additional driver
assistance features for complex urban driving situations will be
rolled out later via over-the-air software updates.

Munich. The BMW Group is now offering customers even
broader scope for personalising analysis of their driving stats in the
My BMW App and MINI App. The latest update allows drivers to view
their personal carbon footprint for the first time.

“Our usage research shows: The information in My Trips is one of the
most popular features in the app,” says Dirk Wiedmann, Senior Vice
President Sales Steering and Strategy, Digitalization. “We are now
expanding this successful function with carbon footprint calculation,
giving our customers simple and straightforward access to
sustainability-related information via a popular and widely used channel.”

Emissions from vehicle production and use: two sets of figures
make up the driver’s personal footprint.
The personal carbon footprint function has been designed with a
technology-open approach and is available for vehicles with combustion
engines, as well as plug-in hybrid and fully electric models. At
launch, this feature will be rolled out across selected models in
various European countries*. Calculation of the personal footprint is
based on two central sets of figures.

Emissions from vehicle use: My Trips analyses the
routes the driver has completed and uses the energy consumed in the
process to work out the CO2 emitted. To this end,
CO2 equivalents are calculated using data from the
International Energy Agency (IEA). For vehicles with combustion
engines, the app calculates the amount of CO2 emitted
based on the fuel consumed. For battery-electric vehicles, it shows
the emissions generated when using the average national energy mix –
and also tells the driver how high emissions would be by comparison
if green energy was used.

Emissions from vehicle production: These are
emissions generated during the manufacturing process. Emissions are
recorded from the processing of raw materials, procurement of
materials, transport logistics and the production of the model at
hand. The BMW Group already sets out the emissions figures for
numerous models in the form of Vehicle Footprint Reports. These are
calculated according to recognised standards for life cycle
assessments and certified by the TÜV Rheinland agency. They can also
be downloaded
from the BMW Group website.

Ready for electric mobility: My BMW App helps with the transition.

The My BMW App also includes the Electric Vehicle Analysis introduced
last summer. This function allows customers whose BMW is powered by a
combustion engine to simulate how well a fully electric BMW fits their
personal driving profile. Here, the customer selects an electric BMW
model as an alternative vehicle in the app. Once the
combustion-engined model has made at least 200 journeys and covered a
distance of 2,000 kilometres (over 1,240 miles), the analysis shows
the journeys the user could have completed on a single charge with the
electric vehicle selected, and also flags up charging stations close
to frequently visited destinations. More than 100,000 customers had
used this analysis by May 2025.

Over 14 million customers around the world use the My BMW App and
MINI App. The My Trips function is available in more than 90 countries
and is actively used by 1.9 million users.

* The new function is available to users of vehicles for which a
TÜV-certified carbon footprint has been calculated. The feature will
launch in Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Luxemburg and
Switzerland, and be available in the BMW 1 Series (code 81GE), BMW 2
Series (31GH), BMW X2 (71GM, 21GM), BMW X3 (11GR, 31GP, 65GP), BMW 5
Series (31FK, 11JF, 71FJ), BMW 5 Series Touring (11HH, 11GW, 21GV),
BMW M5 (81FK) and BMW iX (41CF) and MINI Cooper (11GC), MINI Cooper C
(11GD), MINI Aceman (31GC) and MINI Countryman (41GA, 11GA).

Munich/Las Vegas. The BMW Group presents the driving
and user experience of the future at the Consumer Electronics Show
(CES) 2025 in Las Vegas. BMW is providing the first opportunity to
experience the close-to-production version of the new BMW iDrive –
complete with its centrepiece, BMW Panoramic Vision – at the event.
The software underpinning it all is the new BMW Operating System X,
which acts as the intelligence hub behind the new display and
operating concept. The holistic system, with its modern, style-shaping
design, will be introduced in all new BMW models from the end of
2025.
“High tech meets highly intuitive operation – a quarter of
a century of pioneering work and technological leadership in operating
concepts has been channelled into the new BMW Panoramic iDrive,” says
Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,
responsible for Development.
“The foundations are
provided by the new BMW Operating System X. With this advance, we are
giving one of the world’s best and most comprehensive infotainment
systems even greater capability and once again setting the industry
benchmark in multimodal interaction. Starting with the first
series-produced Neue Klasse model at the end of this year, the new BMW
Panoramic iDrive will form an integral part of all future BMW models.”

Four elements, one goal: consistent driver focus in
characteristic BMW style.
The new BMW iDrive merges
four central elements into a unique display and operating concept.

BMW Panoramic Vision – a Head-Up Display concept
newly developed by BMW for projecting content – reflects visible
information from A-pillar to A-pillar onto a black printed surface
in the lower section of the windscreen. This information is visible
to all occupants.
The most important driving information is
projected directly into the driver's line of sight on the left-hand
side of the BMW Panoramic Vision (in left-hand-drive cars), above
the steering wheel. The driver can personalise the content in the
central and right-hand areas of the BMW Panoramic Vision via the
central display. The integration of the BMW Panoramic Vision creates
a 3D effect for the driver and passengers.

The new and optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display above
the BMW Panoramic Vision now shows integrated navigation and
automated driving information directly in the driver’s field of
vision. The content in the BMW Panoramic Vision and BMW 3D Head-Up
Display is presented in a neatly coordinated way.
The level of
innovation achieved by the two Head-Up display technologies is
underlined by several patent applications from the BMW Group
resulting from the development of these projection technologies.

On the central display with matrix backlight
technology, the familiar, updated menu structure with QuickSelect
ensures optimal operation of the functions and content by touch.
Operation is very easy and convenient, as the free-cut-design
display is located close to the steering wheel in an ergonomically
ideal position. Selected content (widgets) can be carried over to
the BMW Panoramic Vision with a swipe on the central display. As
many as six widgets are possible and they can be arranged as desired
in the BMW Panoramic Vision.

The new multifunction steering wheel uses BMW’s
shy-tech approach, whereby the relevant buttons are illuminated to
highlight available functions. The steering wheel serves as the
primary physical control, and its buttons provide active haptic
feedback. The buttons have a well-judged, relief-like surface, which
makes them extremely easy to locate and means the driver can press
them without needing to divert their gaze away from the
road.
The arrangement of the buttons follows the familiar
principle of driver assistance functions being positioned on the
left-hand side of the steering wheel and content-controlling
functions on the right-hand side.

The combination of these four elements re-interprets BMW’s customary
“hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” approach, with which BMW sets
the benchmark for driver focus and presents a unique form of
intuitive, use-friendly and ergonomically optimised operation. The BMW
Panoramic iDrive always gives the driver the right information in the
right place and at the right time. The system continues the approach
of using an optimal combination of analogue and digital controls
through the use of switches, buttons, touch and voice control. There
are haptic switches for the windscreen wipers, turn signal indicators,
exterior mirrors, volume control, gear selectors and window de-icers.
Other functions are optimised for operation using touch/voice control
or via the multifunction steering wheel, such as telephone functions,
media control systems, navigation, assisted driving, personalisation
of displays, selection of MyModes and much more besides.

Alongside data-driven learnings on the use of BMW Operating Systems
across the global fleet of now more than 22 million connected BMW
vehicles, the development phase of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive also
included numerous studies conducted in the BMW Group’s usability labs,
in which around 3,000 customers were involved. Every decision on the
various aspects of the operating logic is therefore based on data and
made in a structured manner. Here, the user experience’s extended
scope for personalisation has also been aligned with customer
preferences and requirements.

BMW Operating System X: intelligent, versatile, fit for the
future.
The new BMW Operating System X represents an
update of the latest operating system, as used in many BMW models, and
is a wholly in-house development from BMW. Like BMW Operating System
9, it is based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software
stack. It offers even greater update and upgrade capability than the
predecessor system, making it both fit for the future and backwards
compatible. It is ready to accommodate additional functions and will
keep vehicles equipped with the new BMW Panoramic iDrive at the
cutting edge of technology over a long period of time.
“The
overall concept of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive with Operating System
X has been enabled by a large technological leap forward,”
says Stephan Durach Senior Vice President Connected Company
BMW Group. “It offers intuitive operation, emotionally
engaging experiences and specific personalisation. The new BMW iDrive
with Operating System X demonstrates the potential of a
software-defined vehicle.”

The expanded intelligence of BMW Operating System X makes it possible
to combine the BMW Panoramic Vision, optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display,
central display and multifunction steering wheel with one another in
such a way that physical and digital experiences merge. For example,
an incoming call initially brings up a graphic on the BMW Panoramic
Vision. At the same time, a symbol on the relevant steering wheel
button that was not previously visible is illuminated in green,
indicating the option of taking the call by pressing the button or
rejecting it with a swipe on the right-hand side of the steering
wheel.
When a navigation destination is entered by touch control
or voice command, route guidance alerts are shown on the BMW 3D
Head-Up Display and further information on roads and junctions on the
BMW Panoramic Vision. A whole map overview can be shown on the central
display at any time for broader-scale orientation.

The personalisation of content reaches a new level with BMW Operating
System X. The displays in the Panoramic Vision can be adapted to
personal preferences. In addition, drivers now also have the option of
choosing their own settings for driving attributes such as response
and steering characteristics in the My Mode “Personal”. Moreover,
pictures chosen by the user can be uploaded as backgrounds for the
Central Display and the colourway of the Ambient Lighting and user
interface design adjusted to their particular preferences, creating an
even more personalised driving experience.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant responds in the accustomed way
to the prompt “Hey BMW” or can be called up by pressing the respective
button on the multifunction steering wheel. The capabilities of the
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are being constantly enhanced and
will be taken to a whole new level for the Neue Klasse through the
integration of Large Language Models (LLM). The use of this technology
is focused initially on navigation, allowing the customer to give more
extensive spoken commands using natural language: for example: “Take
me to a charging station which is close to a food store.” At
technology partner Amazon’s booth at CES 2025, visitors can get an
initial impression of these capabilities using a beta version of this
build of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant in a BMW X3.

As with the current infotainment systems from BMW, the BMW
Intelligent Personal Assistant can – if the driver desires – make
suggestions proactively based on user behaviour. This intelligence
expands further with BMW Operating System X. In relevant situations,
the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant highlights driver assistance
systems, which are rarely used by the driver. As a kind of reminder,
the system suggests activating Sport Mode on suitable routes if the
driver has already activated Sport Mode independently beforehand. If
the driver doesn’t respond to or ignores these proactive suggestions
several times, the system learns and refrains from making suggestions
from then on.

BMW Operating System X carries over the scope for integration of
third-party apps from the previous infotainment generation. As things
stand, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store offers more than 60 apps worldwide
for BMW Operating System 9. The selection will continue to grow, e.g.
with productivity apps such as video conferencing service Zoom.

Design and technology for a unique user and driving
experience.
The new BMW Panoramic iDrive is scalable and
will be integrated into all new BMW models – across all vehicle
segments and with all drive system technologies – from the end of 2025.

The driving experience takes centre stage. The driver should feel at
ease and have full control over the vehicle. This principle is
reflected in the design of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive. Particular
attention is paid to the details: the user interface has been designed
as intuitively and adaptively as possible to ensure seamless
interaction. The result is a holistic experience enhanced by a
harmonious combination of sound, light and innovative design. Every
journey becomes a special moment of connection between human and
vehicle.
“Technology and customer preferences are changing more
quickly than ever. The design of digital experiences and sound is
playing an ever more important role,” says Adrian van
Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The new
BMW Panoramic iDrive not only makes our vehicles smarter and more
user-friendly, it also enables much more extensive personalisation,
which turns every new BMW into a car that is very much the user’s
own.”
Another element in the holistic experience provided by the
BMW Panoramic iDrive is the new HypersonX sound experience in the Neue
Klasse models. Developed by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio, it
comprises 43 sound signals and special driving sounds for Personal
Mode and Sport Mode. The multi-dimensional spectrum adapts the sounds
precisely to the driving situation at hand and, in so doing, creates
an emotional interaction between the driver and their BMW.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Research & Development,Mobility of the future,Drive Technologies,Press Release,Infotainment & Entertainment,ConnectedDrive,Driver Assistance

Munich. The BMW Group is the first automotive
manufacturer to receive the CCC Digital Key™️ certificate from the Car Connectivity Consortium
for its digital vehicle access. The certification is based on the
CCC's highest requirements for secure and interoperable
vehicle-to-device access and confirms that the BMW Digital Key meets
these requirements. The Car Connectivity Consortium is a
cross-industry standardisation organisation. It dedicates its work to
the further development of the connectivity of vehicles with
intelligent mobile devices and drives this forward globally. The BMW
Group has been a member of the consortium since 2017. From the outset,
the company has been leading the development and establishment of
cross-industry technologies and safety standards with its partners
within the consortium. In addition to numerous automotive
manufacturers, CCC member companies also include the most important
smartphone manufacturers, tier one automotive suppliers, semiconductor
manufacturers and providers of security products.

“Certifying digital key solutions at every point of the
vehicle-to-device ecosystem is imperative as we work to increase
adoption and build trust among consumers and the industry at large,”
said Alysia Johnson, President, Car Connectivity Consortium. “Our
entire membership has helped us progress towards this goal since we
first launched the certification program in December, and we’re proud
to designate BMW as the first automotive manufacturer to be CCC
Digital Key™️ certified.”

“We want to offer our customers the best possible overall
experience and innovative, convenient vehicle access is an important
part of this experience. The fact that our digital key is now the
first product to receive CCC Digital Key™️ certification underlines
our claim to leadership in this area,” says Kai Barbehön, Head of
Central Control Unit Development, Physical Vehicle Network and Power
Supply BMW Group. “We are looking forward to continuing our
collaboration with CCC and regard the CCC Digital Key as an integral
part of our current and future vehicle platforms.”

BMW Group trailblazing by introducing the Digital Key and with
continuous innovation impulses.
The BMW Group is not
only the first automotive manufacturer to be certified, but also a
pioneer in the introduction and implementation of digital vehicle
access. Since 2018, BMW Group customers have been able to conveniently
unlock, lock and start the vehicle using the BMW Digital Key on their
smartphone via Near Field Communication (NFC). In 2021 the BMW iX was
launched and simultaneously introduced the BMW Digital Key Plus as the
world's first application of ultra-wideband technology (UWB) for
digital vehicle access. The Digital Key Plus offers additional
functions, increased security and more convenience, as customers no
longer have to take out their smartphone to unlock, lock and start the
vehicle. The technology has now also made its way into the BMW compact
class and the new MINI family. In addition, every BMW Group digital
key can be shared with friends and family members across platforms
using conventional messenger services. The specification for UWB-based
digital vehicle access was developed by the BMW Group and its partners
and established jointly as a global standard for the automotive
industry through the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). The BMW Group
aims to continue to be a driving force in digital vehicle access and
to keep innovating the entire customer experience in this area.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Research & Development,Press Release,ConnectedDrive

Las Vegas. The in-car digital experience of both
the present day and the future is the dominant theme of the BMW
Group’s presence at CES 2024. New infotainment products for the
current BMW model portfolio will be shown at the event. At the same
time, the BMW Group is demonstrating innovative development projects
that offer a glimpse into the future. Visitors can teleoperate a BMW
iX and guide it around the Silver Lot on the exhibition site,
discover as a passenger the potential offered by augmented reality
glasses during a journey and experience a new generative AI
capability of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant powered by the
Alexa large language model (LLM), enabling quick answers and how-to
responses on vehicle features.

“BMW is synonymous with both the ultimate driving machine and
the ultimate digital experience,” says Frank Weber, Member of the
Board of Management responsible for BMW Group Development. “At the
CES we are showing more content, more customisation and more gaming.
This is all underpinned by our powerful, in-house developed BMW
Operating System. And we will take a look to the future, of course,
with perfectly integrated augmented reality and strong, reliable
artificial intelligence at the interaction between human and machine.”

BMW Operating System 9 makes it possible: new gaming
experiences from the ConnectedDrive Store in 2024.

The optional “BMW Digital Premium” offering allows
BMW customers with BMW Operating System 9 to access an extended
range of products from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. As well as
on-demand functions for the vehicle, the store also offers an
ever-evolving selection of third-party apps in the categories music
& audio, news & magazines and gaming for the infotainment
system. More games are now being made available via this channel for
in-car enjoyment. And occupants will also be able to play using
proper gaming controllers in future. BMW is
presenting this new form of gaming experience for the first time at
CES 2024. For example, “Beach Buggy Racing 2” offers customers an
action-packed racing game that evokes memories of the great console
classics. Two players in the vehicle can compete against one another
in split-screen mode using their gaming controllers. Any standard
gaming controller with Bluetooth capability can be connected to the
infotainment system in just a few steps. The controller link-up will
be made available over the air for BMW Operating System 9 during 2024.

The AirConsole App already lets BMW customers play single and
multiplayer games in their car. The “casual games” offered are easy
to pick up for anyone; the user’s smartphone serves as a controller,
allowing simple control of gameplay that is quick to learn.
Additions are constantly being made to the choice of games in the
in-car AirConsole App.

BMW Digital Premium is optionally available for models with
BMW Operating System 9 and can be obtained from the ConnectedDrive
Store either online, in the MyBMW App or directly from the car. BMW
Digital Premium allows customers to enjoy in-car use of all the apps
available in their country as well as covering the necessary data
usage. And the package offers more besides, including enhanced
navigation functions and added customisation options.

Top entertainment – with the Video App in BMW Operating
Systems 8.5 and 9.

In addition to the BMW Theatre Screen with Amazon
Fire TV built-in in the rear compartment of the BMW 7 Series, BMW
customers are now able to watch a variety of video content on the
central display too*. The already very succesful TiVo operating
system for smart TVs was optimised for in-car video streaming in the
space of just a few months by developers from the BMW Group working
together with XPERI Inc. The result is the integration of the DTS
AutoStage Video Service powered by TiVo. The entertainment programme
comprises both live channels and on-demand media libraries covering
the categories news, sport, entertainment for kids, movies and TV series.

First launched in the new BMW 5 Series, the platform will now be
rolled out to further executive and luxury models over the air**.
Since the end of 2023, customers driving compact models with BMW
Operating System 9 have also been able to access the Video App with
BMW Digital Premium. These will be followed by further models over
the course of 2024, such as the BMW X2 and all models in the new
MINI family.

The Video App is currently accessible in the USA, UK, South
Korea, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, and will soon be coming to
Japan. A number of portals are available internationally, including
Pluto TV, Bloomberg, TED, Yahoo! and Chili. These are accompanied by
market-specific streaming services:

Germany: JOYN, ZDF, tagesschau, Deutsche Welle.

Italy: RaiPlay

France: TF1

USA: Tubi, Gusto TV, Journy

Japan: Hulu Japan, NHK Plus, NTV NEWS NNN, TVer, WOWOW

The portfolio of video streaming platforms will keep expanding and
will be gradually rolled out to other countries.

Ready for the wearables of the future – enhanced driving
experience with XREAL Air 2 augmented reality glasses.

The CES show also sees the BMW Group demonstrate
for the first time how augmented reality (AR) glasses are set to
enrich the driving experience in future. Visitors can test the
possible uses of AR glasses for themselves on a drive through Las
Vegas. Wearing the glasses, they can see how navigation
instructions, hazard warnings, entertainment content, information on
charging stations and supporting visualisations in parking
situations are embedded perfectly into the real-world environment by
the “XREAL Air 2”. AR and mixed reality (MR) devices will become
increasingly popular in the next few years, thanks to technological
advances and entry-level models that are more affordable for
customers. In future, AR and MR devices will be able to offer both
drivers and passengers enhanced information and enjoyable
experiences to complement the displays fitted in the vehicle.

The BMW Group has been working on the development of AR/MR
technology since 2008 and investigating possible applications for
head-mounted displays in research projects. The BMW engineers,
together with their development partners, have now succeeded in
showing stable augmented reality and mixed reality content to
passengers in a dynamically moving vehicle for the first time. The
displayed image remains securely embedded in the environment even in
challenging driving situations, such as when turning, driving over
large bumps or accelerating. To achieve this, the tracking system of
the AR/MR device in question has to be linked to the vehicle’s
sensor data.

The BMW Group has consistently built up its pool of experience
with AR/MR devices over the years and presented the results to the
public. These include the initial MINI
Augmented Vision project (2015), the collaboration with Meta
Reality Labs (2022 & 2023), the ConnectedRide
Smartglasses from BMW Motorrad and the M
Mixed Reality Driving Experience. The Augmented View function
in current BMW and MINI models shows drivers a live video stream on
the display that is augmented with additional information for
optimum guidance when using the navigation system. In the area of
highly innovative, vehicle-related XR applications, the BMW Group
has filed patents for almost 70 inventions from its developers in
recent years.

“Thanks to the recent research collaborations with Meta
Reality Labs and XREAL, we have made considerable progress in our
preparations for integrating external XR devices into our driving
experience in production models. We are proud to be leading the way
here and are well prepared to offer our customers breathtaking XR
experiences in the future,” says Peter Lehnert, Vice President
Research, New Technologies and Innovations Digital Car at the BMW Group.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of being able to digitally
embellish the real world by combining car tech with AR tech,”
comments Peng Jin, co-founder of XREAL. "And this could lead to
entirely new experiences while travelling by car and open up new
potential for AR tech.”

The BMW Group has successfully carried out pioneering work on
digital technologies in the past – such as vehicle access using the
BMW Digital Key – and has been a driving force behind the
industry-wide standardisation of such innovations. The company is
open to collaboration with further partners in the area of AR/MR
too. The goal here is to establish an industry standard for
connecting the CE industry’s XR devices with vehicles.

Development demo: BMW voice assistant becomes the ultimate
vehicle expert with the help of the Alexa Large Language Model (LLM).

At CES, the BMW Group and Amazon showcase voice
assistant LLM capabilities based on a current development
project that the companies are working on in preparation for a
potential series rollout. This makes the BMW
Intelligent Personal Assistant the ultimate vehicle expert thanks to
generative AI that is powered by the Alexa LLM. At CES, visitors
experience how the voice assistant provides quick instructions and
answers about vehicle functions in a much more human,
conversation-like manner, while at the same time being able to
control some vehicle functions.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has been using
artificial intelligence for speech processing for a long time and
this demo is the latest proof point of the continued innovation BMW
and its partners are bringing to customers. Complex processing
capabilities, which enable human-like interactions and dialogs, have
not yet been integrated into BMW series vehicles. Such capabilities
are now made possible by LLMs, which are AI models that are designed
to process human language at a high level and generate responses
accordingly. The BMW Group is also taking careful steps to build a
safe and trusted experience for customers, and continues to test and
iterate these LLM capabilities over time with its partners.

Since the introduction of the first BMW Intelligent Personal
Assistant in 2018, language interaction has been an essential part
of BMW iDrive. Today, the voice assistant gives customers control
over many vehicle functions so that they can keep their hands on the
wheel and their eyes on the road. Leveraging Amazon’s Alexa Custom
Assistant — a solution that is based on Alexa technology and enables
companies to create their own customized voice assistant — the
next-generation of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will soon
become more powerful over the course of the year in vehicles with
BMW Operating System 9.

Joint development project with Valeo paves the way for
teleoperated valet parking.

The BMW Group and Valeo have entered a strategic
partnership to work on the joint development of next-generation
automated Level 4 parking solutions. This includes the development
of solutions for automated valet parking (AVP). Here, the customer
leaves their vehicle in a designated drop-off area. The vehicle then
searches for a vacant parking space itself, manoeuvres into the
space and later exits it again, and can even drive back to the
pick-up area for collection by the driver. Either an autonomous
driving system or a teleoperated valet system can be used as the
underlying technology for this.

CES 2024 visitors will have the opportunity to try out
teleoperated valet parking for themselves. Teleoperation offers
complete control in situations that could be very challenging for
fully autonomous systems, such as in complex or unfamiliar environments.

The teleoperator uses sophisticated technology and live camera
images to guide and move the vehicle so that it can be parked and
retrieved again in a carefully controlled manner. Possible future
applications for this technology could include parking at events, at
airports or in the logistics sector.
Munich. With the new BMW iDrive, the BMW Group is
bringing a display and operating concept to the next vehicle
generation which enables a completely new intuitive interaction
paradigm between the driver and vehicle. The next development leap
will follow in the Neue Klasse from 2025. The future generation of BMW
iDrive will transform the vehicle into a digital experience space.
With BMW Panoramic Vision, a new multifunction steering wheel, the new
central display and a new BMW 3D head-up display as central display
and operating elements, the quintessential BMW user experience is
being reinterpreted in all Neue Klasse models.

Logical progression of BMW iDrive with new
technologies.
The next technological leap enables a
modern, characteristically BMW interior design with a focus on touch
and advanced voice interaction. BMW iDrive in the Neue Klasse is
characterised by four central elements. The new BMW Panoramic
Vision provides a fresh take on the quintessential BMW driver
orientation and content for all passengers. BMW Panoramic Vision is
based on a completely new head-up display technology. It projects
information at a height perfectly matched to the driver across the
entire width of the windscreen. BMW Panoramic Vision is complemented
by the new BMW 3D head-up display for active driving
situations, which displays the required information, such as assisted
driving or traffic guidance, with high precision as 3D animations in
the driver’s line of sight. With the new multifunction
steering wheel, the display contents of BMW Panoramic
Vision and the BMW 3D head-up display can be individually controlled
according to the principle eyes on the road, hands on the
wheel. Operation is convenient and precise via the steering
wheel buttons, and is enhanced by the active haptic feedback and
multilayer technology. BMW iDrive in the Neue Klasse focuses on the
new central display with characteristically BMW
styling and intuitive touch function. The matrix backlight technology
of the new central display ensures a high resolution for the displays,
vibrant colours and strong contrast, regardless of the specific light conditions.

The future BMW iDrive will continue to feature the QuickSelect
concept introduced in 2023. The system in the Neue Klasse is based on
a highly integrated software architecture and uses the next generation
of the BMW Operating System. The vehicle’s smart connectivity with the
BMW Cloud as well as the customer’s digital ecosystem creates an
immersive user experience and brings a new dimension to the human-car
interaction. It transforms the vehicles of the Neue Klasse into
digital experience spaces.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Research & Development,Press Release,Infotainment & Entertainment,ConnectedDrive

Munich. As one of the pioneers in the use of a
smartphone as a digital vehicle key since 2018, BMW is pressing ahead
with the development and popularisation of its BMW Digital Key
feature, which is available to iPhone users today. In line with this
goal, the premium car manufacturer will introduce the BMW Digital Key
Plus, a convenient and secure way to unlock and start your car without
taking your iPhone out of your bag or pocket. This latest incarnation
of the service is based on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, the
technology found on the U1 chip of iPhone. The BMW Digital Key Plus
feature will be first launched with the all-electric BMW iX for iPhone.

Ultra-Wideband technology for enhanced convenience and
security.
The new, additional features enabled by the
BMW Digital Key Plus are based on Ultra-Wideband technology. This is a
short-range, high-bandwidth digital radio technology that is
characterized by an exceptionally precise localization with the
greatest possible security. UWB’s precision also ensures that relay
attacks, where the radio signal is jammed or intercepted, are not
possible. Apple and BMW have been working closely with the Car
Connectivity Consortium (CCC) to establish the Digital Key
specification 3.0 for UWB, providing a global standard for the
automotive industry.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Research & Development,Press Release,Infotainment & Entertainment,ConnectedDrive

Munich. The ongoing commitment of BMW to
transformation and digitalisation has earned the brand several awards
once again this year. The readers of motoring magazines Auto Bild
& Computer Bild and auto, motor und sport / Moove singled out
innovative connectivity features and digital services for special
praise. They were particularly impressed by BMW’s strategic
development of digital products and services, as well as the brand’s
seamless integration of smart devices and its intuitive operating concept.

The BMW Digital Key topped the rankings in this
year’s Connected Car Awards presented by Auto Bild & Computer
Bild. The smartphone-based digital car key allows owners to lock and
unlock their vehicle easily and safely. They can also send a Digital
Key for their car to as many as five other people. And there is also
the option of releasing a special Digital Key with limited rights
(e.g. restricted maximum speed and acceleration, stereo volume, etc.),
which is ideal for novice drivers, for example.

More than 11,000 of the readers who cast their votes in the Car
Connectivity Award 2020 poll conducted by the auto, motor und sport /
Moove magazines judged the BMW 3 Series to be the car
with the most innovative connectivity features in the “Connected Cars”
category. The BMW 3 Series was the first model range to be equipped
with the voice-controlled BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant based on
the digital operating concept BMW Operating System 7.0. Another
connectivity highlight is Remote Software Upgrade, which enables
customers to keep their vehicles supplied with the latest software
updates. Here, new functions can be imported into the car quickly and
easily over the air.

Meanwhile, BMW Driving Assistant
Professional collected the most votes from readers in the
“Driver Assistance Systems Safety” category. This tech package
features Steering and Lane Control Assistant including the new Active
Navigation and Emergency Lane Assistant functions. And Assisted View
allows the workings of the individual Driving Assistant Professional
assistance systems to be shown in real time in the instrument cluster
through 3D visualisation of the surrounding area.

Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President Digital Car, BMW Group,
expressed his appreciation for the awards: “On behalf of the whole
team at BMW I would like to sincerely thank all the readers involved
for the three awards,” he said. “For us, these distinctions represent
the best reward and motivation – above all, because the readers have
decided the outcome. This vote of confidence from you confirms to us
that we are heading in the right direction, and we will continue to do
everything we can to delight our customers over and over again.”

The ongoing expansion of connectivity towards a digital,
emission-free future is – alongside automated driving – one of the
central areas of activity through which the BMW Group is driving
forward its strategic transformation of the mobility sector.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Research & Development,Press Release,Awards,3 Series,Infotainment & Entertainment,ConnectedDrive,Driver Assistance,Product,BMW

Richmond Hill, ON. Today, BMW launches the all-new
4th generation 2019 BMW X5 Sports Activity Vehicle with two
variants, the X5 xDrive 40i and the X5 xDrive 50i. Since its
introduction almost 20 years ago, the BMW X5 has been built
exclusively in Spartanburg, SC. To date, more than 2.2 million X5’s
have been sold worldwide.

The all-new 2019 BMW X5 will again be built at BMW Plant Spartanburg,
SC. This center of competence for BMW X models also handles production
of the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X6 and will soon add the BMW X7.

New design language exudes confidence and authority.

A wheelbase that is 42 mm longer than its predecessor’s, a 36 mm
increase in vehicle length, an extra 66 mm of width and a 19 mm
increase in height give the all-new 2019 BMW X5 both a muscular
appearance and a more generous level of space for passengers and their
luggage. The latest X5 retains the hallmark proportions of an SAV, but
the pared-back design language – clean surfacing and precise lines
accentuating elegant poise and authority – is new. A sculpted hood a
short front overhang, lightly hexagonal wheel arches and the dynamic
sweep of the roofline exemplify the sporty yet rugged character of the
all-new 2019 BMW X5.

“The BMW X5 embodies the origins of the BMW X family and, in its
fourth generation, sends out its most powerful message yet in terms of
presence and modernity,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice
President BMW Group Design. “It defines a new X design language –
robust, clear and precise.”

The most striking feature of the front end is the large BMW kidney
grille with single-piece surrounds. The all-new BMW X5 comes standard
with Adaptive LED headlights, while BMW Laserlights are available as
an option and feature blue x-shaped elements, which split up the
hexagonal light sources inside the familiar BMW twin headlights, make
a distinctive visual statement.

The precise character line in the X5’s flanks, rise up at the rear
door, contributing to the modern appearance of the all-new BMW X5. It
defines the car’s powerful shoulders and feeds into the rear lights,
which extend well into the flanks. At the rear, all lights feature LED technology.

xLine and M Sport model variants, options from BMW Individual.

Distinctive design features differentiate the xLine and M Sport model
variants of the all-new BMW X5. The standard xLine model uses exterior
cues including kidney grill bars finished in matte aluminum, underbody
protection, roof rails and side window surrounds in satin Aluminum,
plus other accents in Pearl-effect Chrome, to accentuate the off-road
character of the all-new 2019 BMW X5. M Sport specification sees the
wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underbody protection and side
skirts painted in body color and complimented by matte aluminum kidney
grille bars, and roof rails and side window surrounds in high-gloss black.

The all-new BMW X5 comes standard with 20-inch light-alloy wheels,
the M Sport brings 21-inch M light-alloy wheels. Wheels in 22-inch
sizes are available as options.

Interior design and controls

Modern and elegant surfacing radiates a feeling of space inside the
all-new 2019 BMW X5. The front and rear occupants all enjoy generous
accommodation amid an exclusive ambience. The instrument panel is
broken up by sweeping horizontal lines, which combine with
electroplated trim elements to emphasize the width of the interior.
And with its large trim finisher and surrounds likewise made up of
electroplated elements, the center console – rising up to the
instrument panel – contributes to the handsome overall impression.

The raised seating position, driver-focused cockpit and new design
and arrangement of the controls offer the person in the left seat the
best possible view to enable him or her to maintain complete command
over the task of driving. The fully-digital instrument cluster and the
center display are connected visually by consistency of design and
share the same graphics. The center console hosts the iDrive
Controller, the newly designed transmission selector lever and all
other driving-related controls – i.e. the Driving Experience Control
switch, the start/stop button and the buttons to activate the air
suspension settings and off-road modes (if equipped). A similarly
new-look for the heating, air conditioning and lighting functions is
on hand.

Carefully selected materials in the interior include a new Vernasca
variant for the leather upholstery. Like the optional BMW Individual
extended Merino leather trim, it is available in five colors. The
all-new BMW X5 is fitted with standard electrically adjustable and
heated sports seats. Customers can also specify optional multifunction
seats with massage function and seat ventilation for the driver and
front passenger.

The standard xLine and optional M Sport models also come with
specific design features that bring a distinctive flair to the
interior. The interior appointments for the standard xLine model
accentuate the car’s versatility and luxurious ambience, while the
optional M Sport model enhances the on board driving experience. The
two lines include illuminated door sill plates specific to each
variant and an anthracite headliner. M Sport trim also includes an
M sports steering wheel, M-specific pedals, driver’s footrest and
piping on the seats, plus exclusive interior trim strips in Aluminum Tetragon.

Innovations conceived to promote well-being and enhance luxury.

New features designed to maximize the luxurious ambience of the
all-new 2019 BMW X5 include the four-zone air conditioning system and
a Panoramic glass roof with a 30 percent larger see through area than
on the outgoing model. The standard ambient lighting includes the
Welcome Light Carpet – which illuminates the entry area to the car
when the doors are unlocked or opened – and Dynamic Interior Light,
which emits pulsating light signals in pre-defined situations: such as
flashing lighting in the door if a door is opened while the engine is
running or flashing lighting in the instrument console to alert to an
incoming phone call.

The audiophile experience is provided by the optional Bowers &
Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with 20 speakers and 1,500-watt
output (expected to be available from 12/2018). The optional Rear-seat
entertainment Professional system (expected to be available from
12/2018) comprises a pair of 25.9 cm (10.2-inch) full-HD touchscreen
displays, a Blu-ray-compatible DVD player, two USB ports, an HDMI
socket and two headphone jacks. The system is part of the new display
and control concept allowing those in the rear of the vehicle to
select and operate entertainment functions. A navigation map and
BMW ConnectedDrive services can be accessed from the rear seats.

The all-new BMW X5 can now be specified with heated and cooled cup
holders in the center console. The optional glass controls bring an
all-new flourish to the interior of the BMW X5. This exclusive design
feature has been developed for the transmission selector lever, the
iDrive Controller, the start/stop button and the volume control button
for the audio system.

Versatile functionality: two-section tailgate, third row of seats.

As well as increased levels of comfort and exclusivity, the all-new
2019 BMW X5 now offers enhanced functionality. It features a
two-section tailgate for ease of loading. If the optional Comfort
Access is specified, both sections can be opened and closed
automatically and hands-free. If equipped with the optional Luggage
Compartment package, (expected to be available from 12/2018), the
cargo area cover will lower electrically into the load compartment floor.

If the optional third row seats is specified (expected to be
available from 12/2018), customers will receive rear seats with
electric fore-and-aft adjustment. A control panel in the cargo area
can be used to slide the second-row seats forwards or backwards and
fold down the backrests of the second and third rows. The second-row
seats can be tilted forward electrically to ease entry/exit into and
out of the two third-row seats.

Power and Performance

The all-new 2019 BMW X5 launches with a choice of two new gasoline
engines. Heading the range is the BMW X5 xDrive50i, whose extensively
developed V8 unit is making its debut. A six-cylinder inline engine
can also be found under the hood of the BMW X5 xDrive40i. All engines
channel their power through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission,
while BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is on hand to ensure that
power is translated into secure progress – on or off road.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the gasoline engines features
turbochargers, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable
valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.

Unrivalled power and an unmistakable sound: the new V8 engine.

Fundamentally upgraded from crankcase to engine management, the
eight-cylinder engine aboard the BMW X5 xDrive50i serves up an
intoxicating blend of prodigious power delivery and signature V8
soundtrack. The turbochargers’ positioning in the “V” between the
banks of cylinders is just one of the standout features of the
4.4-liter unit. Newly designed heat plates ensure particularly
effective thermal shielding for the crankcase and cylinder head. A new
ignition system allows the engine to be restarted even more smoothly
and swiftly when the Auto Start Stop function is activated.

The new engine’s peak torque of 479 lb-ft is available over a broad
rev range from 1,500 to 4,750 rpm, while its maximum output of 456 hp
is on tap between 5,250 and 6,000 rpm. This formidable pulling power
is available early and doesn’t let up, resulting in a 0 – 100 km/h
time of 4.7 seconds.

Straight-six gasoline engine with a thirst for revs.

The power unit fitted in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i boasts the
free-revving ability inherent in all six-cylinder inline engines from
BMW, plus wonderfully eager response. The 3.0-liter unit employs a
twin-scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology whose
maximum pressure of 5,076 psi ensures the fuel is delivered in
extremely precise doses. The straight-six generates its maximum output
of 335 hp between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque 330 lb-ft
is waiting to be unleashed from 1,500 – 5,200 rpm.

The new BMW X5 xDrive40i completes the 0 – 100 km/h sprint in just 5.5 seconds.

Eight-speed Steptronic transmission with sportier shift
characteristics.

All of the engines available for the new BMW X5 link up with a new,
improved version of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, whose
wider ratio spread and new control electronics help to increase the
powertrain’s overall efficiency. New torsion dampers reduce rotational
irregularities and converter slip for superior shift comfort. And
optimised hydraulic control enables even sportier gear shifts.

Optimum power distribution courtesy of enhanced xDrive
all-wheel drive and an electronically controlled rear differential
lock.

The task of maximizing traction, agility and directional stability in
the new BMW X5 falls to the latest generation of the BMW xDrive
intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which is now able to split drive
torque between the front and rear wheels with even greater precision
and speed, as the situation demands. For added efficiency, full power
can be directed to the rear wheels only in situations where all-wheel
drive is surplus to requirements.

The new xDrive system also offers a rear-biased set-up for those
occasions when the driver adopts a particularly dynamic style at the
wheel. The electronically controlled rear differential lock (available
in the Off-Road package) gives the handling an even sportier edge. By
limiting equalization of the rotational speeds of the inside and
outside wheels through corners, it is able to optimize the transfer of
power to the road in dynamic driving situations. As a result, the new
BMW X5 can power out of bends with exceptional momentum. Governed by
the Driving Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function for
the rear differential improves traction and power transmission when
driving over loose ground or on road surfaces offering differing
levels of grip for the left-rear and right-rear wheels. It does so by
preventing a wheel from spinning when it is struggling for purchase.
The locking effect is produced by means of an electric motor and
allows as much as 1,106 lb-ft of drive torque to be redirected from
the faster-turning wheel to the slower-turning wheel.

New chassis systems enhance off-road ability, sportiness and
comfort.

The design principle of the new chassis – based on a double-wishbone
front axle and a five-link rear axle – checks all the right boxes for
supreme traction on rough terrain, coupled with excellent dynamic
responses and ride comfort in road driving. The SAV now comes as
standard with the Dynamic Damper Control system, whose electronically
controlled dampers sharpen the X5’s handling dynamics at the same time
as increasing ride and suspension comfort. The driver can select from
two performance settings – for a more comfort-oriented or sportier
driving style – using the Driving Experience Control switch.

An array of chassis systems available in a BMW X model for the first
time make it possible to boost the off-road performance, sportiness or
comfort of the new BMW X5 more effectively than ever before. Adaptive
M suspension Professional with active roll stabilization and Integral
Active Steering endows the car with exceptionally agility. The roll
stabilisation system employs electric swivel motors to enable
remarkably swift and precise compensation of body roll under dynamic
cornering. This increases agility and directional stability when
turning into corners and helps optimize traction when accelerating
out. The system has the additional effect of increasing straight-line
driving comfort by actively countering the vibrations triggered by
bumps on one side of the road. Integral Active Steering (available as
an individual option) is also operated electromechanically. By turning
the rear wheels in either the same direction as the front wheels or
the opposite direction – depending on the vehicle speed – it optimizes
cornering agility, ensures effortless lane changes and helps the
vehicle to dart through city traffic. Integral Active Steering
therefore makes light work of maneuvering into and out of tight
parking spots, while also increasing stability when overtaking at
highway speeds.

The two-axle air suspension system with automatic self-levelling will
be welcomed by anyone seeking greater ride comfort. The suspension’s
air supply is controlled individually for each wheel using an
electrically driven compressor with pressure reservoir, enabling it to
balance out an unevenly loaded vehicle. Since the air suspension works
in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the vehicle
load registered by its sensors can be factored into braking
calculations. When the SPORT driving mode is engaged or the vehicle’s
speed exceeds 138 km/h, its ride height is automatically lowered by 20
mm. The driver can also adjust the body’s ground clearance – for
off-road driving, for example – by pushing a button in the cockpit. It
can be raised in two stages to a maximum of 40 mm above the standard
setting. Another button in the luggage compartment activates a loading
mode that lowers the vehicle by 40 mm. The next time the engine is
started, the system will automatically revert to the last mode
selected. The desired vehicle ride height can even be set with the
engine switched off.

Customers can also specify an Off-Road Package, which is being
offered in a BMW X model for the first time. Available for all model
variants, the package’s specification includes rugged underbody
protection at the front and rear of the vehicle, along with the
two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled rear
differential lock. The Off-Road package features its own special
graphics in the instrument cluster and center display, and an extra
button on the center console for selecting the four driving modes. The
driver can therefore activate the ideal settings for the vehicle’s
ride height, the xDrive system, the accelerator response, the
transmission control, and the DSC system’s corrective inputs in
preparation for driving on a range of surfaces, such as sand, rock,
gravel or snow.

Driver Assist Systems

Offering a significantly expanded array of driver assistance systems
compared with its immediate predecessor, the new BMW X5 clearly
demonstrates its commitment to taking comfort and safety to new
heights. By processing camera images and data acquired by radar
sensors, the new systems enable even more comprehensive support for
the driver in a variety of situations. As components of the BMW
Personal CoPilot, they represent new milestones on the road to
automated driving.

The standard Driving Assistant on the new BMW X5 includes Blind Spot
Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Frontal
Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision
Mitigation (which now also alerts the driver if cyclists are detected)
Cross Traffic Alert Rear, and Speed Limit Information.

Comprehensive safety and comfort package: Driving Assistant
Professional.

Available as an option, the Driving Assistant Professional package is
comprised of the Traffic Jam Assist with extended hands-off time
(expected to be available from 12/2018) as well as the Lane Keeping
Assistant with active side collision protection.

Another component of the system is the evasion aid, which can help
avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians suddenly appearing in
the driver’s path. As soon as an evasive maneuver corresponding to
such a scenario is detected, the system assists the driver with
steering inputs to direct the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane.

The array of assistance systems contained in this wide-ranging suite
of safety and comfort features is composed of the Active Cruise
Control (ACC) with Stop & Go and Cross Traffic Alert Front which
reduces the risk of a collision when maneuvering forwards towards
crossing traffic where visibility is restricted.

For comfortable maneuvering into parking spaces: Parking
Assistant Plus.

The function of many other assistance systems that make life easier
for the driver when maneuvering into parking spaces has been further
enhanced. The new BMW X5 is equipped with standard Park Distance
Control (PDC), which brings sensors at the front and rear of the vehicle.

The Parking Assistant Plus in the new BMW X5 enables automatic
selection and use of parallel parking spaces. These parking spaces are
detected by ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle passes them. The Parking
Assistant function is activated at the touch of a button on the center
console. The system then takes care of the acceleration, braking,
steering and gear changes necessary to maneuver into the space.

Unique, high-precision guidance: the Back-up Assistant.

A further illustration of BMW’s ongoing progress towards automated
driving is provided by the Back-up Assistant. This function offers a
level of assistance – for leaving a parking space or maneuvering in a
confined area – as yet unmatched by other vehicles. The Back-up
Assistant takes over steering to maneuver the vehicle mirroring the
path most recently used in the forward direction. This system makes
reversing for a distance of up to 55 yards a particularly effortless
task in the all-new 2019 BMW X5. All the driver has to do is operate
the accelerator and brakes and monitor the surrounding area. The
system is initiated by pressing a button when the vehicle is
stationary and the gear selector is in the “P” position. The steering
movements made during the vehicle’s last forward maneuver are stored
by the system and retained. This means the Back-up Assistant can be
used to maneuver the all-new 2019 BMW X5 backwards out of a parking
position that it drove into forwards the previous day.

The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the
rear-view camera and the Top View, Panorama View and 3D View functions
of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a 360-degree image of the
vehicle and its surroundings in the Center Display.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional: Seventh generation of the BMW
iDrive Operating System

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional in the all-new 2019 BMW X5 combines
a new display and control concept and the ultimate in connectivity to
create a superb all-round package. The latest-generation of the iDrive
comprises a high-resolution digital 31.2 cm (12.3”) instrument cluster
display behind the steering wheel and a 31.2 cm (12.3”) center display
diagonally across. The system offers many hardware upgrades including
new haptic controls on the iDrive controller, an advanced tablet-like
touch interface, stunning visualizations, and the largest displays in
a BMW yet. This latest system perfectly blends the strengths of
previous iDrive concepts with the modern ways in which people expect
to interface with their popular electronic devices. The multi-modal
approach of the iDrive touch controller, large touchscreen center
display, cloud based voice control, and gesture control allow users to
interact in the way of their choosing.

The seventh incarnation of iDrive, which runs the latest BMW
Operating System, has a cutting-edge, fully digital design and is
geared even more closely to the driver’s needs by allowing him or her
to customize the system to his or her own preference with customizable
widgets of information. This new level of personalization is then
stored in the BMW cloud and can follow the customer to other BMW
vehicles. Various information from categories such as driving,
entertainment, navigation, connectivity, and the vehicle info itself,
can be selected in nearly any combination in any of four layouts on
the Center Display. Multiple pages can be created and easily accessed
with a simple swipe across the screen with your finger.

To maximize the capabilities of the large 32.1 cm (12.3”) digital
instrument cluster, the traditional circular gauges have been finessed
into an all-new design pushing the speedometer and tachometer gauges
to the outer edges of the display as geometric bands. This new design
opens space in the middle for routing and navigation. Information from
the center display can also be shown within the tachometer.
Additionally, your driving mode will determine your visual display style.

Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the
Navigation Professional system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system
with 20 GB of memory and two USB ports, plus Bluetooth interfaces. The
driver can be automatically detected and personal settings activated
either using the traditional vehicle key or by downloading the
driver’s personal settings the BMW Cloud.

Drivers can enjoy the full benefits of the car’s intelligent
connectivity capabilities through vehicle apps such as news, weather,
office and online search. Other capabilities include Intelligent
Emergency Call – which automatically summons swift assistance in an
emergency – and regular updates for the navigation system’s maps.

For the first time, a selection of digital services will be bundled
together and offered for the new BMW X5 under the guise of the
Connected Package Professional. The Connected Package Professional
includes Remote Services, Concierge Services, and Real Time Traffic
Information and is standard on the all-new X5 for a duration of 4
years. Having this package on the vehicle will allow for easy
integration and adaptation of new technology over time. Customers can
continue to download various new digital services individually as they
become available or renew existing services via the ConnectedDrive Store.

BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility.

BMW Connected is the companion app for BMW drivers. Intelligent
connectivity helps users to reach their destination easily and with
minimal stress – and not only when in their car; BMW Connected is an
all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and
their smartphone with their vehicle.

The world premiere of the all-new BMW 5 Series Long Wheelbase is one
of the main highlights of the Auto Shanghai 2017 show. The new
business sedan is the successor to the current front-runner in the
Chinese car market’s premium segment and comes with all the right
credentials for cementing this leading status. Likewise making its
debut public appearance is the latest special-edition version of the
BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. And Auto Shanghai 2017 also hosts
the Asian premieres of the BMW Concept X2, revised BMW 4 Series models
and new services from BMW Connected created specifically for the
Chinese market.

The time-honoured MINI brand is also represented at Auto Shanghai
2017 with a world premiere. The new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman,
a talented all-rounder with stand-out performance attributes, is
making its first public appearance. And BMW Motorrad is kicking off
its 2017 product offensive with the presentation of the revised
BMW S 1000 RR and BMW S 1000 XR, plus an ultra-exclusive new model.

Auto Shanghai is one of the most important motor shows of the year
for the global automotive industry. It has taken place every other
year since 1985, alternating with the Auto China show in Beijing on
the motoring calendar. The National Exhibition and Convention Center
in the west of Shanghai opened its doors in 2015 and invites vehicle
manufacturers, suppliers and service providers from around the world
to display their products across an area measuring some 400,000 square
metres. The 17th edition of the Auto Shanghai show will see more than
1,100 exhibitors present their new models, technological innovations
and service offerings to the public from 21 – 28 April 2017.

World premiere: the all-new BMW 5 Series Long Wheelbase.

Taking centre stage at the BMW brand’s stand at Auto Shanghai 2017 is
the world premiere of the all-new BMW 5 Series Long Wheelbase. The new
model is being built by BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. exclusively for
the Chinese market at the Shenyang facility.

Its 133-millimetre-longer wheelbase imbues the business sedan’s
exterior with elegantly stretched proportions which blend harmoniously
into its contemporary looks. State-of-the-art powertrain and chassis
technology underpin an exceptional balance between BMW’s hallmark
dynamic driving ability and supreme ride comfort. The all-new BMW 5
Series Long Wheelbase is up to 130 kilograms lighter than its
predecessor and boasts enhanced aerodynamics.

Generous kneeroom, optimised soundproofing and a host of innovative
equipment features – such as the electrically adjustable comfort

elevate on-board comfort in the rear to an even higher level. As well
as the iDrive system and a further improved voice control system, the
display and control concept also encompasses a touchscreen monitor and
BMW gesture control.

World premiere: the BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Yellow Edition.

The BMW Group is also building on its successful track record in
sustainable mobility, where BMW i has played a significant role. The
BMW eDrive drive system technology originally developed for the
all-electric BMW i3 and BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car can now be
experienced in six BMW model ranges and one MINI. Indeed, fuelled by
the popularity of the BMW i and BMW iPerformance models, the BMW Group
is now the most successful manufacturer of plug-in hybrid models for
the premium segment globally.

The BMW i8, for example, has developed into the world’s
highest-selling plug-in hybrid sports car. And its appeal is given
fresh lustre at Auto Shanghai 2017 with the presentation for the first
time of the BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Yellow Edition. This latest special
edition stands out with its exclusive Protonic Frozen Yellow paint
finish, newly designed 20-inch light-alloy wheels and distinctive
interior design cues.

Asian premiere: the BMW Concept X2.

The BMW Concept X2 is celebrating its Asian premiere in Shanghai. The
new vehicle concept for the premium compact segment combines the
robust and functionally accomplished character of a BMW X model with
the low-slung proportions of a coupe. Among the signature X elements
are muscular surfaces, large, almost squared-off wheel arches and
stylistic underfloor protection. The long wheelbase, short overhangs,
flowing roofline and slim side window graphic lend the silhouette of
the BMW Concept X2 a svelte and dynamic appearance.

Asian premiere: the new BMW 4 Series model range.

The new BMW 4 Series models will be introduced to the public in Asia
for the first time with detailed revisions to their design and
optimised chassis technology. LED headlights and LED rear lights now
come as standard for the BMW 4 Series Coupe, BMW 4 Series Convertible
and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, as does a refined premium ambience in the
interior. If the optional Navigation system Professional is specified,
the iDrive operating system also features a new tile-style menu layout
with constantly updated content. And the Multifunctional Instrument
Display can now also be ordered as an option.

BMW Connected with services developed specially for China.

With mobility, communication and infotainment services tailored
specially to BMW’s Chinese target group, BMW Connected presents a
premium digital offering unmatched in the country. The BMW Connected
personalised mobility assistant’s China-specific functionality

World premiere: the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman.

The MINI brand is showing off its sporty side at Auto Shanghai 2017,
with the world premiere of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman
commanding the limelight. The latest John Cooper Works machine is the
largest and most versatile elite performance model in the British car
maker’s portfolio. The brand’s most powerful engine, eight-speed
Steptronic Sport transmission (fitted as standard in cars for the
Chinese market), ALL4 all-wheel drive and sports suspension, plus the
aerodynamically optimised body and sports-car cockpit aura come
together into a sublime overall package to deliver standout
performance and a race feeling that will capture the imagination.

The new-generation MINI sees the British manufacturer also
strengthening its position as the leading maker of premium vehicles in
the small car and compact segments in China. The MINI 3-door and MINI
5-door are each available with a selection of three engines in the
country, and MINI Convertible customers there can choose from two
variants. In the premium compact segment, the MINI Clubman can be
ordered with one of three engines and the MINI Countryman with a
choice of two, plus ALL4 all-wheel drive as an option. The new
MINI John Cooper Works Countryman joins the MINI John Cooper Works and
MINI John Cooper Works Clubman in the ranks of top-level MINI
performance models in China.

BMW Motorrad: fresh success, a model offensive and a world
premiere for a suitably exclusive newcomer.

BMW Motorrad recorded extremely dynamic growth in China in 2016, with
sales up 52.7 per cent compared with the previous year. And the brand
is continuing along its upward curve in 2017, fuelled by its ongoing
model offensive in the premium motorcycle and maxi scooter markets. 14
new and redesigned models are set to be introduced up to the end of
2017. And the brand is showing various models at Auto Shanghai 2017,
including the latest versions of the ultra-sporty BMW S 1000 RR and
BMW S 1000 XR. But the highlight of the BMW Motorrad stand is the
world premiere of one of the most exclusive models ever offered by BMW Motorrad.

countries have been nominated in ten categories. They will be assessed

The BMW i Remote App for the Samsung Gear S smartwatch has
garnered international success: the innovative app by BMW earns a
prize in the “Software and Mobile Apps” category at the renowned CES
Innovation Awards in New York.

The international Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is held each
January in Las Vegas, with the forthcoming event taking place from 6
to 9 January 2015. With 3,500 exhibitors, the CES is among the world’s
biggest consumer electronics trade fairs. The lead-up to the show sees
the presentation of the coveted CES Innovation Awards in 20 product
categories on 11 November 2014.

Selecting the winning submissions are teams of judges made up of
independent industrial designers, engineers and media representatives.
The “Software and Mobile Apps” category is guided by criteria such as
functionality, aesthetic appeal, user-friendliness and innovative
edge. It places the BMW i Remote App for the Samsung Gear S among the
global front-runners in mobile apps.

Innovative, simple to operate and highly functional.
The BMW i
Remote App for the Samsung Gear S smartwatch is an application which
seamlessly connects BMW i drivers to their vehicle via their
wristwatch. The app was developed to allow direct access to important
information in real time. The app displays all key information at a
glance on the smartwatch’s home screen: in the case of the BMW i3, for
example, it shows not only the time but also the electric range
available, the battery charge level and – during the charge process –
the estimated charge time remaining. Using the touch display to click
on the data sent to the Gear S by the BMW i Remote App opens a submenu
with more detailed information presented in the typically classy
colours and style of BMW i. A further submenu informs the user of the
vehicle’s current status, i.e. whether any of the doors, windows or
the boot are open.

Advance regulation of the onboard climate, which can likewise be
controlled by the Samsung Gear S, is an important factor in extending
the car’s range. In this way, the interior can be conveniently
preheated while the vehicle is still connected to the power supply.
This does not affect the charging process.

The BMW i Remote App for the Samsung Gear S is further evidence of
how rapidly BMW can respond to the fast pace of innovation on the
connected car front by drawing on BMW ConnectedDrive services and apps
to deliver smart solutions.

Press Contact: Barb Pitblado
Tel: +1-905-428-5005
E-mail: barb.pitblado@bmwgroup.ca

Press Release,Coupé,BMW i,i3,ConnectedDrive,I01,I12,i8,Product,BMW
