The feature combines route guidance, the vehicle’s surroundings, and driver assistance information into a single 3D view on the central display. This allows drivers to see not only the next navigation step, but also how the vehicle perceives its surroundings and which assistance functions are supporting the driving task.

The display shows the driver's own vehicle precisely within its lane and at the correct road level. This helps with navigation on highways, at intersections, and in city traffic. At the same time, it makes assisted and semi-automated driving even easier to understand in the context of the current driving situation.

This integration is particularly relevant when driver-assistance systems support driving over long distances or in complex traffic situations. For example, the Highway Assistant 2 enables hands-free driving on highways at speeds of up to 130 km/h. The system controls both longitudinal and lateral movement and supports automated lane changes after the driver confirms with a glance. With active route guidance via BMW Maps, the system provides support from the highway on-ramp all the way to the exit.

In urban areas, the interplay between navigation and driver assistance is becoming increasingly important. Starting in 2027, BMW models equipped with the BMW Operating System X will begin rolling out navigation-guided, semi-automated driving in urban areas, initially in Germany.

“An important step toward highly automated driving is the intelligent interaction between navigation and driver assistance. BMW Maps with Driver Assistance¹ shows drivers how route guidance, environmental perception, and assistance functions work together. This provides better orientation when driver assistance is active—developed by the BMW Group in collaboration with Mapbox,” says Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President of Digital Services, Infotainment, and Connected Company at the BMW Group.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the BMW Group to be the first to bring this next-generation navigation experience to market. Drivers can see exactly which lane they need to be in and everything happening around the vehicle. All of this is brought together in a seamless view—making every trip easier so drivers can enjoy the ride and never miss a turn again,” says Peter Sirota, CEO of Mapbox.

The integrated display in BMW Maps is based on the new generation of driver assistance systems working in conjunction with the BMW Operating System X. BMW Maps with Driver Assistance¹ is developed in-house by the BMW Group and utilizes navigation data and map technology from its partner, Mapbox. The combination of navigation, 3D map display, and driver assistance makes BMW Maps a key differentiator in intelligent vehicle guidance across international markets.

1) The BMW Maps feature with driver assistance is available only in combination with Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant in select countries, cities, and on select roads. Unique to BMW Symbiotic Drive: Safety assistance systems remain discreet in the background and can provide effective support when it matters most.</pp:summary>

Munich. The launch of the Neue Klasse marks the first
time BMW will offer an expanded portfolio of active safety assistance
systems as standard across multiple model series. Among them is an
exit warning function with active door opening delay, helping to
prevent so-called dooring accidents. The BMW iX3 was the first Neue
Klasse production model to feature these technologies, with further
models including the BMW i3, BMW X5 and BMW 7 Series to follow.

"The broad rollout of our new active safety functions as
standard is based on our 'Smart, Symbiotic, Safe' philosophy. We bring
drivers and assistance systems together into a cooperative system that
works in harmony. At BMW, active safety functions operate as quiet,
intelligent companions in the background, discreet yet highly
effective when it matters most in critical situations,” says
Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience
Development at the BMW Group.

Active safety assistance systems support drivers in critical driving,
parking and exit scenarios. Analysis of customer-consented data from
BMW’s intelligently connected vehicle fleet demonstrates that these
functions contribute to greater road safety. In the last month alone,
the fleet analysed* in Europe covered 1.6 billion kilometres.
Customers were alerted to potential collisions around 8 million times
through visual and acoustic warnings. In 243,977 cases, active
steering and braking interventions by assistance systems helped
prevent a potential collision.

BMW Symbiotic Drive takes driver assistance in BMW’s new vehicle
generation to a new level by creating an intuitive partnership between
driver and vehicle. The system understands the driver’s intentions
through steering inputs and line of sight, enabling assistance
functions to intervene only when necessary. As a result, functions
such as the Lane Keeping Assistant only provide warnings or steering
interventions when the vehicle detects an unintended lane departure or
an imminent collision. When a manoeuvre is initiated deliberately by
the driver, the system does not intervene, provided there is no
foreseeable risk of a collision or the vehicle leaving the roadway.
Indicators of driver intent include activating the turn signal, making
an active steering input or performing a shoulder check.

The new BMW iX3 received the top rating of five stars in the latest
safety test conducted by the independent testing organization Euro
NCAP, significantly exceeding the required scores. The BMW iX3 was one
of the first vehicles to be evaluated according to the test protocols
that were fundamentally revised in 2026. The NCAP result confirms
BMW’s holistic approach to safety.

New Exit Warning can prevent “dooring accidents” more
effectively.

Dooring accidents occur when the door of a parked vehicle
unexpectedly opens into the traffic lane. This is particularly
dangerous for cyclists. According to the German Insurance Association,
8% of all bicycle accidents in Berlin in 2024 were related to
dooring**. The exit warning has been standard equipment on many BMW
models for years and alerts drivers to potential hazards with both
audible and visual signals. With the launch of the Neue Klasse, this
feature is being expanded as standard to include active door opening
delay. Using side radars, the system continuously monitors the traffic
area around the parked vehicle and detects approaching vehicles,
bicycles, or other road users. If a risk of collision is detected, the
electronic door lock specifically delays the opening of the door until
the danger has passed.

New and enhanced features highlight BMW's expertise in safety.

In addition to the cooperative Lane Keeping
Assistant and the improved exit warning,
numerous innovations and enhancements demonstrate BMW’s extensive
expertise in active safety technologies. These systems are designed to
provide reliable support when needed, while remaining discreet and
non-intrusive in everyday driving. They include, among others:

For the first time, the emergency steering
intervention automatically steer the vehicle around an
obstacle while keeping it within its own lane – for example, if a
person steps onto the road between two vehicles after a breakdown,
or if a cyclist is overlooked in low-light conditions. This feature
is currently unique among competitors.

In situations with a risk of a side-impact collision, the
emergency steering intervention also helps
prevent accidents – for example, when another vehicle is getting
dangerously close. A brief, active steering intervention gently
steers the vehicle away from the object within its own lane, given
sufficient space to maneuver has been detected.

The Emergency Brake Assistant with evasive
steering support helps prevent imminent head-on collisions. It can
automatically apply the brakes up to full deceleration. Thanks to
improved sensor technology, the feature can also assist in
situations involving animals on the road and wildlife crossings.

The Road Priority Warning now assists drivers
even more effectively by displaying recognized traffic signs in the
BMW Panoramic Vision display directly in the driver's field of view.
In addition to red traffic lights, yield signs, stop signs, and
no-entry signs, this now also includes warnings at crosswalks.

The Attentiveness Assistant with emergency stop
can provide support in medical emergencies. If the driver camera
detects that the driver is no longer fit to drive, the system
temporarily takes control of the vehicle. It brings the vehicle to a
controlled stop. In doing so, it automatically activates the hazard
lights and triggers an eCall. The driver can override the system at
any time.

More safety features parking and maneuvering.

Enhanced and further refined safety assistance systems can also help
prevent collisions during parking and manoeuvring.

Active Park Distance Control can prevent collisions
using ultrasonic sensors and surround-view cameras. The feature
applies the brakes at the rear – and, for the first time, on the
sides as well – to bring the vehicle to a stop when it detects
stationary or moving objects.

When backing out of a parking space onto busy streets – a maneuver
that often offers limited visibility – the emergency braking
function for cross-traffic can prevent serious accidents
involving cyclists and other road users. The rear side radars scan
the surrounding area. The rearview camera and the bird’s-eye-view
display on the Central Display provide additional visibility.

The standard start monitoring detects potential
pedal misapplications. A typical example is confusing the
accelerator with the brake. If the system detects an obstacle less
than one meter away at speeds of up to 2 km/h and, at the same time,
an unusually rapid and forceful depression of the accelerator pedal,
it intervenes. The vehicle then brakes in a controlled manner,
either forward or backward, until it comes to a stop.

BMW Panoramic iDrive provides clarity for the driver.

With the new generation of sensors and the improved Assisted View
display in the BMW Operating System X, the current driving situation
is presented with precision and in great detail. The visualizations
are shown on the Central Display, the Panoramic Vision, or optionally
on the 3D Head-Up Display. They help the driver intuitively grasp
traffic conditions and detected objects and provide additional clarity
regarding the currently active driver assistance systems and their interventions.

New high-performance computer integrates all driver-assistance functions.

With the new BMW iX3 and subsequent models, BMW is laying the
technical foundation for the next generation of intelligent,
symbiotic, and safe driver-assistance systems. All new active safety,
automated driving, and automated parking functions are managed by the
central “Superbrain of Automated Driving.” This water-cooled
high-performance computer has approximately 20 times the computing
power of the previous system.

New test site in Sokolov is paying off.

The “Future Mobility Development Center” (FMDC) test facility in
Sokolov, Czech Republic, which opened in 2023, has made a significant
contribution to the development of new active safety systems and
driver-assistance features.

“The Future Mobility Development Center in Sokolov is much more than
a proving ground for us. It is a central component of our development
strategy enabling us to bring innovations in advanced driving
assistance systems to series production quickly, safely and with a
clear customer focus. This unique testing environment allows us to
recreate real-world driving scenarios under highly demanding and
reproducible conditions. As a result, we are reinforcing the BMW
Group’s technological leadership for the long term.,” says Dr.
Martin Sautter, Senior Vice President Vehicle Certification at the
BMW Group.

At around 600 hectares, the BMW Group’s largest proving ground
worldwide offers approximately 25 kilometres of test tracks for
validating realistic driving and traffic scenarios under reproducible
conditions. These range from urban traffic and motorway driving to
automated parking manoeuvres. The state-of-the-art facility
complements virtual driving simulations and millions of kilometres of
testing on public roads in extreme heat, snow and ice across Europe,
North America, South Africa and China.

* 1.3 million BMW vehicles equipped with the previous generation of
driver-assistance technology, whose owners have given their active
consent to data collection.
** According
to the German Insurance Association (GDV), there were 392
"dooring" accidents in Berlin alone in 2024, accounting
for just under 8 percent of all bicycle accidents in Berlin.

Q&A: Short Answers to the Most Important Questions

What is new in terms of active safety with the Neue Klasse?

With its new generation of driver-assistance systems, BMW is offering
even more active safety features as standard across all model lines.
These systems support driving, parking, and exiting the vehicle
safely. They provide reliable support when needed, while remaining
discreet and non-intrusive in the background in everyday driving.

What makes BMW's new exit warning special?

The new exit warning can detect approaching road users and actively
delay the opening of the door if there is a risk of collision. This
helps prevent dangerous “dooring” accidents, which occur when a car
door is unexpectedly opened into the traffic lane. This is
particularly dangerous for cyclists.

What does BMW Symbiotic Drive mean?

BMW Symbiotic Drive enables intuitive interaction between the driver
and the driver assistance systems. All systems provide targeted
support when a potential hazard is detected, while remaining quiet,
intelligent companions in the background when no intervention is required.

What makes active safety assistance systems with BMW Symbiotic
Drive special?

The system understands the driver’s intentions through steering
inputs and line of sight, enabling assistance functions to intervene
only when necessary. As a result, functions such as the Lane Keeping
Assistant only provide warnings or steering interventions when the
vehicle detects an unintended lane departure or an imminent collision.

What role does the new proving ground in Sokolov play?

BMW tests real-world driving and traffic scenarios there under
reproducible conditions. This supports the development and robust
validation of new assistance systems.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Research & Development,Automated Driving,Driver Assistance,Safety, Security

Munich. BMW customers have covered more than 200
million kilometres hands free with the BMW Highway Assistant. The
function is used daily by customers in several model ranges,
including the 5 Series and 7 Series, iX, X5, X6, X7 and XM, as well
as the new BMW iX3.

The BMW Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving on highways at
speeds of up to 130 km/h. The system takes over longitudinal and
lateral control and supports the driver with automated lane changes
confirmed with a glance.

Dr Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience
Development: “The symbiotic interplay between driver and
driver assistance during hands-free driving with our Highway
Assistant, and the underlying safety concept, are unique in the
industry. Over 200 million kilometres of hands-free highway driving
in real-world customer use demonstrate just how reliable and
relevant this system is in everyday life.”

With the new generation of BMW driver assistance systems, the
availability of the Highway Assistant in Europe is being
significantly expanded from just one country to over 20. In
addition, the system now provides support from the motorway entrance
to the exit (entry-2-exit) when navigation is active using BMW Maps.
Whilst the previous generation was available in Germany, the USA and
Canada, in the new BMW iX3 and subsequent models such as the BMW i3
and BMW 7 Series, customers can now enjoy hands-free assisted
driving on suitable routes across borders in numerous European
countries thanks to DCAS approval*. These include Germany, Austria,
Switzerland, Italy, France and the Benelux countries. Further
countries such as the UK, Ireland, Spain and Portugal will follow
shortly. In Northern, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe the function
will be available at a later date.

Special safety concept for hands-free assisted driving on
highways, motorways and the autobahn.

Hands-free assisted driving with the BMW Highway Assistant is based
on a comprehensive safety concept. This includes redundant systems
for lane detection and vehicle positioning via cameras and
high-resolution maps. Using information from the side cameras, the
system continuously checks whether the vehicle is centred in the
lane. A safety chip on the ADAS computer constantly monitors that
everything is functioning correctly.

At the same time, the driver always remains responsible. A driver
camera ensures that the driver stays alert and ready to take over at
all times. To this end, the driver’s line of sight, eye status and
head movements are analysed. The system is designed to ensure that
hands-free driving is restricted exclusively to suitable conditions.
When the system detects that the driver needs to place their hands
back on the steering wheel, it prompts them to do so – for example,
when approaching a highway exit.

For the new generation of vehicles, starting with the BMW iX3, the
Motorway Assistant has been further developed with BMW Symbiotic
Drive. The function is designed to enable seamless interaction
between driver assistance systems and human driving behaviour. When
driver assistance is activated, the driver can accelerate, steer and
brake as required without immediately triggering a deactivation of
the longitudinal and lateral guidance. The intuitive operating logic
and clear displays in the BMW Panoramic iDrive ensure that assisted
driving is intuitive and can be controlled at any time – for the
safe use of the highest level of automation in SAE Level 2.

* Function naming in USA/Canada: BMW Highway Assistant; Function
naming in UK: BMW Motorway Assistant

Munich. The BMW Group is the first automotive
manufacturer to launch a completely newly developed digital nervous
system for all drivetrain variants and vehicle segments. It is more
intelligent, more powerful and more efficient and will be rolled out
for the first time in the models of the Neue Klasse. Four
high-performance computers, also called
"Superbrains", consolidate the computing
power for the most important customer functions: infotainment,
automated driving, driving dynamics, and basic functions such as
vehicle access, climate control, and comfort. The four Superbrains
provide more than 20 times the computing power compared to the current
vehicle generation and are already designed for upcoming software and
function updates, including AI-powered customer experiences.

"Technology openness is the key to BMW's success. Starting with
the first model of the Neue Klasse, we will roll out the technologies
of the Neue Klasse across the entire future model portfolio – across
all segments and all drivetrains. This also applies to our completely
newly developed electronic architecture made up of powerful
'Superbrains' and highly interconnected software platforms. This
architecture allows us to decouple the development of the vehicle and
software from each other. The advantage: More than ever before, all
future BMW models will remain digitally up to date via over-the-air
upgrades and will receive updates even from the next and subsequent
vehicle generations," says Frank Weber, Board Member for
Development at BMW AG.

A fundamental component of the digital nervous system is the
radically simplified wiring harness. It is based on a so-called
zonal wiring harness architecture, which uses 600
meters less wiring and brings 30% weight savings
compared to the previous generation. The wiring harness is divided
into four zones: front end, center, rear and roof. The Superbrains are
connected via high-speed data connections to smaller control units,
the zonal controllers, which manage and consolidate the data flow of
the electronics in and out of the zones. The wiring in the vehicle is
therefore zone-related and can thus be shorter, thinner, and lighter.

A crucial prerequisite for thinner and lighter wiring are the
so-called "Smart eFuses". These are digital
fuses that replace up to 150 traditional fuses. Smart eFuses can be
intelligently programmed for digitally controlled energy distribution
to components. The selective activation of components allows for the
design of intelligent power modes for various vehicle
states such as driving, parking, charging, and upgrading, in which
unnecessary consumers can be identified and switched off. Thus, the
eFuses make a significant contribution to the 20% improved
energy efficiency.

The completely newly developed electronic architecture forms the
basis for the next generation SDV. From the launch of the Neue Klasse,
the upcoming BMW model generation will benefit from it. The first
fully electric derivative of the Neue Klasse will go into series
production later this year at the Debrecen plant (Hungary).

The advanced software architecture of the BMW Group
builds on this new electronic architecture. With the multitude of
digital functions in SDVs, it is crucial that functions can be
continuously developed on stable software platforms rather than being
newly developed for every new generation. This is precisely what is
achieved with the Neue Klasse. In the vehicle the software platforms
run on the respective Superbrains, and the vehicle functions run on
top of them. The "Shared Service Layer" acts as a connecting
element (middleware) and provides, among other things,
state-of-the-art cybersecurity and flexible over-the-air updates. It
also enables customer-relevant AI functions thanks to intelligent
networking of cross-domain data sources.

"With the introduction of the Neue Klasse, we are entering a
mode of software development where we achieve software continuity.
This means we continuously develop software rather than starting from
scratch each time," says Christoph Grote, Senior Vice
President BMW Group Electronics and Software. "Based
on our advanced software architecture and the fact that today our
global development teams generate 130 times more software than ten
years ago, we see ourselves in an excellent competitive position. More
than ever, our software developers can focus on product innovations."

For the Neue Klasse, the development teams are working on well over
1,000 software modules, over 20 GB of software, and over 500 million
lines of code, which will ultimately be integrated into the
Superbrains and the rest of the electronic architecture in the
vehicle. To achieve this, the BMW Group has established a solid
foundation for future-proof and highly effective vehicle software
development in recent years. Innovative methods and tools have been
anchored in the continuously growing global developer network. At the
heart of vehicle software development is the integrated developer
environment: a tailored tool-chain called "CodeCraft." The
speed and quality of development have been enhanced with the use of a
variety of tools that support the software developer with generative
AI. CodeCraft runs in the cloud on up to 75,000 virtual CPUs, supports
the simultaneous work of well over 10,000 software developers, and
records up to 200,000 software builds per day at peak times. This
corresponds to a productivity increase of more than 130 times compared
to ten years ago.

Munich, Dingolfing, Leipzig. The BMW Group is
systematically advancing the digitalisation and automation of its
production processes within the BMW iFACTORY framework. Since 2022,
the company has been testing Automated Driving In-Plant (AFW) for new
vehicles at its largest European plant in Dingolfing. Following
successful CE certification, the pilot project is now transitioning
into series operation.
In addition to Dingolfing, Leipzig is
also currently being enabled to implement the AFW project in series
operation. Other facilities in the BMW Group production network are
set to follow in stages.

“Automated Driving In-Plant optimises our production process and
delivers significant efficiency gains for our logistics,” explains
Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG
responsible for Production. “That is why we will be swiftly rolling
out this technology throughout our production network.”

In addition to the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series in Dingolfing, this
technology is now also being used for the MINI Countryman and other
BMW models in Leipzig. In Dingolfing the new vehicles drive fully
autonomously – without a driver – along a route of more than one
kilometre, from the two assembly halls, through the “short test
course”, to the plant’s finishing area. This is made possible by
sensors installed along the route – creating the largest LIDAR
infrastructure in Europe – and relying on an externally generated
environment model and an external movement planner. Regardless of the
vehicle's equipment options, this system controls its automated
movements, using state-of-the-art cloud architecture. Parts of the
technology were provided by the young Swiss company Embotech AG, which
the BMW Group already cooperated with in the early stages through its
venture client unit, the BMW START-UP Garage.

Plant Leipzig plans to introduce automated driving for around 90
percent of the BMW and MINI models built there, with Plants Regensburg
and Oxford set to follow in 2025. The new site in Debrecen, Hungary,
will also implement this technology from the official launch of series production.

Going forward, the BMW Group plans to expand its use of Automated
Driving In-Plant to other areas of production, such as for driving
through the testing zone and in outdoor distribution areas. Production
and development experts are also working closely together to refine
the technology in-house. Another key factor in expanding the
technology is the increasing use of on-board technology, which will
support the external sensors in the long term.

“Over the next ten years, we will log several million test kilometres
with Automated Driving In-Plant in our production network alone,” says
Nedeljković. “In this way, the BMW Group is once again setting a new
benchmark for automation and digitalisation of its production
processes – while paving the way for future applications in the field
of autonomous driving.”

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Research & Development,Press Release,Locations,Production Plants,Production,Automated Driving

Las Vegas. The in-car digital experience of both
the present day and the future is the dominant theme of the BMW
Group’s presence at CES 2024. New infotainment products for the
current BMW model portfolio will be shown at the event. At the same
time, the BMW Group is demonstrating innovative development projects
that offer a glimpse into the future. Visitors can teleoperate a BMW
iX and guide it around the Silver Lot on the exhibition site,
discover as a passenger the potential offered by augmented reality
glasses during a journey and experience a new generative AI
capability of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant powered by the
Alexa large language model (LLM), enabling quick answers and how-to
responses on vehicle features.

“BMW is synonymous with both the ultimate driving machine and
the ultimate digital experience,” says Frank Weber, Member of the
Board of Management responsible for BMW Group Development. “At the
CES we are showing more content, more customisation and more gaming.
This is all underpinned by our powerful, in-house developed BMW
Operating System. And we will take a look to the future, of course,
with perfectly integrated augmented reality and strong, reliable
artificial intelligence at the interaction between human and machine.”

BMW Operating System 9 makes it possible: new gaming
experiences from the ConnectedDrive Store in 2024.

The optional “BMW Digital Premium” offering allows
BMW customers with BMW Operating System 9 to access an extended
range of products from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. As well as
on-demand functions for the vehicle, the store also offers an
ever-evolving selection of third-party apps in the categories music
& audio, news & magazines and gaming for the infotainment
system. More games are now being made available via this channel for
in-car enjoyment. And occupants will also be able to play using
proper gaming controllers in future. BMW is
presenting this new form of gaming experience for the first time at
CES 2024. For example, “Beach Buggy Racing 2” offers customers an
action-packed racing game that evokes memories of the great console
classics. Two players in the vehicle can compete against one another
in split-screen mode using their gaming controllers. Any standard
gaming controller with Bluetooth capability can be connected to the
infotainment system in just a few steps. The controller link-up will
be made available over the air for BMW Operating System 9 during 2024.

The AirConsole App already lets BMW customers play single and
multiplayer games in their car. The “casual games” offered are easy
to pick up for anyone; the user’s smartphone serves as a controller,
allowing simple control of gameplay that is quick to learn.
Additions are constantly being made to the choice of games in the
in-car AirConsole App.

BMW Digital Premium is optionally available for models with
BMW Operating System 9 and can be obtained from the ConnectedDrive
Store either online, in the MyBMW App or directly from the car. BMW
Digital Premium allows customers to enjoy in-car use of all the apps
available in their country as well as covering the necessary data
usage. And the package offers more besides, including enhanced
navigation functions and added customisation options.

Top entertainment – with the Video App in BMW Operating
Systems 8.5 and 9.

In addition to the BMW Theatre Screen with Amazon
Fire TV built-in in the rear compartment of the BMW 7 Series, BMW
customers are now able to watch a variety of video content on the
central display too*. The already very succesful TiVo operating
system for smart TVs was optimised for in-car video streaming in the
space of just a few months by developers from the BMW Group working
together with XPERI Inc. The result is the integration of the DTS
AutoStage Video Service powered by TiVo. The entertainment programme
comprises both live channels and on-demand media libraries covering
the categories news, sport, entertainment for kids, movies and TV series.

First launched in the new BMW 5 Series, the platform will now be
rolled out to further executive and luxury models over the air**.
Since the end of 2023, customers driving compact models with BMW
Operating System 9 have also been able to access the Video App with
BMW Digital Premium. These will be followed by further models over
the course of 2024, such as the BMW X2 and all models in the new
MINI family.

The Video App is currently accessible in the USA, UK, South
Korea, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, and will soon be coming to
Japan. A number of portals are available internationally, including
Pluto TV, Bloomberg, TED, Yahoo! and Chili. These are accompanied by
market-specific streaming services:

Germany: JOYN, ZDF, tagesschau, Deutsche Welle.

Italy: RaiPlay

France: TF1

USA: Tubi, Gusto TV, Journy

Japan: Hulu Japan, NHK Plus, NTV NEWS NNN, TVer, WOWOW

The portfolio of video streaming platforms will keep expanding and
will be gradually rolled out to other countries.

Ready for the wearables of the future – enhanced driving
experience with XREAL Air 2 augmented reality glasses.

The CES show also sees the BMW Group demonstrate
for the first time how augmented reality (AR) glasses are set to
enrich the driving experience in future. Visitors can test the
possible uses of AR glasses for themselves on a drive through Las
Vegas. Wearing the glasses, they can see how navigation
instructions, hazard warnings, entertainment content, information on
charging stations and supporting visualisations in parking
situations are embedded perfectly into the real-world environment by
the “XREAL Air 2”. AR and mixed reality (MR) devices will become
increasingly popular in the next few years, thanks to technological
advances and entry-level models that are more affordable for
customers. In future, AR and MR devices will be able to offer both
drivers and passengers enhanced information and enjoyable
experiences to complement the displays fitted in the vehicle.

The BMW Group has been working on the development of AR/MR
technology since 2008 and investigating possible applications for
head-mounted displays in research projects. The BMW engineers,
together with their development partners, have now succeeded in
showing stable augmented reality and mixed reality content to
passengers in a dynamically moving vehicle for the first time. The
displayed image remains securely embedded in the environment even in
challenging driving situations, such as when turning, driving over
large bumps or accelerating. To achieve this, the tracking system of
the AR/MR device in question has to be linked to the vehicle’s
sensor data.

The BMW Group has consistently built up its pool of experience
with AR/MR devices over the years and presented the results to the
public. These include the initial MINI
Augmented Vision project (2015), the collaboration with Meta
Reality Labs (2022 & 2023), the ConnectedRide
Smartglasses from BMW Motorrad and the M
Mixed Reality Driving Experience. The Augmented View function
in current BMW and MINI models shows drivers a live video stream on
the display that is augmented with additional information for
optimum guidance when using the navigation system. In the area of
highly innovative, vehicle-related XR applications, the BMW Group
has filed patents for almost 70 inventions from its developers in
recent years.

“Thanks to the recent research collaborations with Meta
Reality Labs and XREAL, we have made considerable progress in our
preparations for integrating external XR devices into our driving
experience in production models. We are proud to be leading the way
here and are well prepared to offer our customers breathtaking XR
experiences in the future,” says Peter Lehnert, Vice President
Research, New Technologies and Innovations Digital Car at the BMW Group.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of being able to digitally
embellish the real world by combining car tech with AR tech,”
comments Peng Jin, co-founder of XREAL. "And this could lead to
entirely new experiences while travelling by car and open up new
potential for AR tech.”

The BMW Group has successfully carried out pioneering work on
digital technologies in the past – such as vehicle access using the
BMW Digital Key – and has been a driving force behind the
industry-wide standardisation of such innovations. The company is
open to collaboration with further partners in the area of AR/MR
too. The goal here is to establish an industry standard for
connecting the CE industry’s XR devices with vehicles.

Development demo: BMW voice assistant becomes the ultimate
vehicle expert with the help of the Alexa Large Language Model (LLM).

At CES, the BMW Group and Amazon showcase voice
assistant LLM capabilities based on a current development
project that the companies are working on in preparation for a
potential series rollout. This makes the BMW
Intelligent Personal Assistant the ultimate vehicle expert thanks to
generative AI that is powered by the Alexa LLM. At CES, visitors
experience how the voice assistant provides quick instructions and
answers about vehicle functions in a much more human,
conversation-like manner, while at the same time being able to
control some vehicle functions.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has been using
artificial intelligence for speech processing for a long time and
this demo is the latest proof point of the continued innovation BMW
and its partners are bringing to customers. Complex processing
capabilities, which enable human-like interactions and dialogs, have
not yet been integrated into BMW series vehicles. Such capabilities
are now made possible by LLMs, which are AI models that are designed
to process human language at a high level and generate responses
accordingly. The BMW Group is also taking careful steps to build a
safe and trusted experience for customers, and continues to test and
iterate these LLM capabilities over time with its partners.

Since the introduction of the first BMW Intelligent Personal
Assistant in 2018, language interaction has been an essential part
of BMW iDrive. Today, the voice assistant gives customers control
over many vehicle functions so that they can keep their hands on the
wheel and their eyes on the road. Leveraging Amazon’s Alexa Custom
Assistant — a solution that is based on Alexa technology and enables
companies to create their own customized voice assistant — the
next-generation of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will soon
become more powerful over the course of the year in vehicles with
BMW Operating System 9.

Joint development project with Valeo paves the way for
teleoperated valet parking.

The BMW Group and Valeo have entered a strategic
partnership to work on the joint development of next-generation
automated Level 4 parking solutions. This includes the development
of solutions for automated valet parking (AVP). Here, the customer
leaves their vehicle in a designated drop-off area. The vehicle then
searches for a vacant parking space itself, manoeuvres into the
space and later exits it again, and can even drive back to the
pick-up area for collection by the driver. Either an autonomous
driving system or a teleoperated valet system can be used as the
underlying technology for this.

CES 2024 visitors will have the opportunity to try out
teleoperated valet parking for themselves. Teleoperation offers
complete control in situations that could be very challenging for
fully autonomous systems, such as in complex or unfamiliar environments.

The teleoperator uses sophisticated technology and live camera
images to guide and move the vehicle so that it can be parked and
retrieved again in a carefully controlled manner. Possible future
applications for this technology could include parking at events, at
airports or in the logistics sector.
Munich. Level 3 highly automated driving, which
allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel and
temporarily divert their attention away from the road, will soon be
available in the new BMW 7 Series. BMW Personal Pilot
L3 is the name of the new function that relieves the
person at the wheel of the task of driving in certain situations and
controls the car’s speed, distance to the vehicle ahead and lane
positioning for them. This new option can be ordered for the
new BMW 7 Series (excluding the i7 eDrive50 and i7 M70
xDrive)* from December to be fitted in vehicles from next March.

Designed to assume the entire task of driving with Level 3
capability as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers
(SAE), the highly automated driving function will be offered
exclusively in Germany priced at 6,000 euros (incl. VAT).

This innovative technology allows drivers to redirect their focus to
other in-vehicle activities when travelling at up to 60 km/h (37 mph)
on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. Thanks to its
particularly sophisticated sensors, this is the first system of its
kind that can also be used in the dark.

The introduction of Level 3 functionality in BMW 7 Series models will
make the BMW Group the first carmaker to offer both an
advanced Level 2 driving function in its product portfolio where the
hands can be taken off the steering wheel and
positioned comfortably and a Level 3 system. The
BMW Highway Assistant already offers a highly
innovative SAE Level 2 partially automated driving
function in all new BMW 5 Series models. The package
also includes a unique feature in the form of the Active Lane Change
Assistant with eye confirmation. This function is primarily designed
for use over long-distance journeys in the new BMW
5 Series, allowing the driver to adopt an extremely relaxed
posture behind the steering wheel. When travelling at up to 130 km/h
(81 mph), this additional function of the Steering and Lane Control
Assistant can take control over the car’s speed, the distance to the
vehicle in front and the car’s steering.

The crucial difference between Level 2 and Level 3 is that with Level
2 (partially automated driving) responsibility continues to lie with
the driver at all times. Whenever the BMW Highway Assistant
is in use, drivers must watch what is happening on the road
and be able to take over the task of driving again at all times. This
is continuously monitored using an intelligent attentiveness camera.

The BMW Personal Pilot L3 for Level 3 highly
automated driving in the BMW 7 Series gives drivers the option of
concentrating on secondary in-vehicle activities away
from what is happening on the road. In a BMW 7 Series with the BMW
Personal Pilot L3 activated, customers will be able to edit
e-mails, for example, or engage more deeply in telephone
calls while travelling at up to 60 km/h (37 mph). They can also use
digital services for e.g. streaming videos from various
providers on the central display during a journey. This makes
the new BMW Personal Pilot L3 the ideal solution for making good use
of time spent in slow-moving traffic or tailbacks during daily
motorway commutes.

Symbols appear on the display behind the steering wheel as
appropriate to indicate whether the BMW Personal Pilot
L3 is available. It is activated and deactivated by a button
on the steering wheel. When the function is being used, the customer
still has to be ready to reassume the task of driving at any time –
i.e. as soon as the situation on the road requires them to or the
stretch of road suitable for using the BMW Personal Pilot L3 comes to
an end. Visual and acoustic signals let the driver know they have to
take over control once more. If the driver does not respond as
required, the vehicle is brought to a controlled standstill.

The live HD map with precise routes is permanently aligned with
extremely accurate GPS location-finding and works with 360° sensors to
ensure exact positioning and monitoring of the area around the
vehicle. The live HD map is always up to the minute thanks to regular
updates. In the new BMW 7 Series, this functionality is underpinned
technologically by a new software stack, a powerful computing platform
and a 5G link-up to the BMW Cloud. Besides the cameras, vehicles
specified with the BMW Personal Pilot L3 are also fitted with
latest-generation ultrasonic sensors and radar sensors and a
highly sensitive 3D lidar sensor for monitoring the
area around the vehicle and the situation on the road.

This package of technology means that the BMW Personal Pilot
L3 works very reliably even in the dark. These various
qualities are unmatched by any rival. SAE Level 3 automated driving
helps improve both comfort and safety on public roads.

*The BMW Personal Pilot L3 is only available in conjunction with the
relevant BMW Connected Drive services. The period of validity for
these services is two years.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Research & Development,Press Release,Automated Driving
