This forward-looking approach has been a hallmark characteristic of the BMW 7 Series for nearly 50 years.

The 2027 BMW 7 Series represents the most extensive model update ever undertaken by BMW. The new BMW 7 Series – now in its seventh generation – marks a tremendous leap forwards once again. As the flagship series of the BMW range and a brand figurehead, the new BMW 7 Series spearheads the introduction of technologies from the Neue Klasse into existing models. This step also marks the beginning of a technology rollout spanning generations and drivetrain variants from which all future BMW cars will benefit.

The 2027 BMW 7 Series debuts with a fully electric model - the i7 60 xDrive. It will be joined by the plug-in hybrid 750e xDrive in the first quarter of 2027 and, later, a V8-powered M Performance model.

Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing.

All models and drivetrain variants of the new BMW 7 Series will be built on a single production line at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The tradition-rich location in Lower Bavaria combines the customary BMW passion for flawless engineering with skilled craftsmanship like no other.

The new 2027 BMW 7 Series celebrates its world premiere on April 22, 2026, with concurrent unveilings in Beijing at Auto China 2026 and at a special event at Grand Central Terminal in the heart of New York City. The start of production and worldwide market launch will follow just a few months later, from July 2026.

The new face of BMW luxury-class models. Specific interpretation of the new BMW design language for the luxury segment. Monolithic appearance makes the new BMW 7 Series visually distinctive and easy to differentiate, as do the new BMW Iconic Exterior Illumination and minimalist crystal headlights.

With the Neue Klasse, BMW has adopted a new and distinctive approach to front-end design that will provide a clear identity and high recognition factor across all the brand’s models. The new BMW 7 Series embodies the specific interpretation of this new design language for the luxury segment. By combining its established qualities – sportiness and dynamism, luxury and comfort – with Neue Klasse design principles, it fits seamlessly into its lineage and, at the same time, provides a clear look ahead to the appearance of upcoming BMW models. Its distinct front-end design is reserved exclusively for the BMW luxury-class.

The front-end centres around the updated illuminated BMW kidney grille, the new two-section headlights and the newly designed BMW badge. The horizontal, minimalist light signature of the daytime driving light icons – crystal headlights can be specified as an option – and the eye-catching kidney grille treatment do most to etch the car’s appearance into the memory. Generously sized surfaces in body colour surround all the design elements of the front end and showcase them to maximum effect. In this way, the monolithic design lends every new BMW 7 Series model even greater visual impact.

The BMW Iconic Exterior Illumination kidney grille with new, horizontal graphic is also the defining element of the front-end design in its updated form. It is slimmer and more vertical in proportion than on the previous model, brings a typical BMW luxury-class flavor to the Neue Klasse design language and gives the kidney grille an even more majestic aura. Technical functions like the radar, camera, sensors, and washer nozzles are integrated into the kidney grille essentially out of sight, enabling an uncluttered and expansive design.

Where the BMW kidney grille and hood meet, we find the newly designed BMW badge, which is now larger and has a matte finish. It is set like a jewel into a valley between two new character lines, which stretch powerfully over the hood. The headlights have a new design and lend the front end a sophisticated, technical aura. The light functions are divided into two separate sections, as before.

The visual focus is on the extremely slim and precisely designed upper light elements, which comprise the daytime driving lights, side marker lights, and turn indicators. The optional BMW Crystal Headlights contain 12 crystal glass elements per light, their diamond cut reflecting the light in a multitude of facets to generate a unique, exclusive look. Indeed, the evolved crystal structure creates a unique aesthetic and brings the front end of the car to life with its elegant sparkling when sunshine hits. During the start-up animation, when the daytime driving lights are switched on and after dark, LED units backlight the crystals and combine with the kidney grille’s contour lighting to create an unmistakable light signature.

The low-beam and high-beam headlights are positioned in the lower section of the headlight units. This section is significantly smaller than on the predecessor car, now only uses one light source, and is arranged vertically and almost invisibly near the air curtains at the outer edges of the body. These lights only become visible when switched on, and the design helps to create a neat and serene, monolithic front-end impression. The Adaptive LED Headlights including cornering light come as standard in the new BMW 7 Series.

Special welcome and goodbye animations and dynamic light carpet. The new welcome and goodbye animations bring a seamless, personalized experience to vehicle access and accompany the passengers from when they approach the car before a journey to when they walk away.

The new BMW 7 Series provides a “welcome” as standard, with a choreographed combination of light effects and projections. Customers can choose an animation from the RELAXED, BALANCED, and EXCITED modes. At the end of a journey, the car produces a similarly well-orchestrated goodbye animation.

A new element of the animation is the optional Ceremonial Light Carpet. Here, LED lights with more than 194,000 pixels – embedded in the door sills – project a dynamic graphic light pattern onto the ground near the door that varies in nature according to the animation mode selected.

Making a statement: side view with clear, reduced surfaces, character line and high-quality details.

The monolithic design of the new BMW 7 Series continues in the car’s flanks. Here, the new design language is revealed in features including a character line extending from the front apron over the door sills and into the rear. This fine detail, precise and sophisticated in its execution, gives the sedan even greater stylistic appeal. The new line lends the BMW 7 Series an almost boat-tail-like character from a rear three-quarter view and imbues it with extra visual length and elegance.

The newly designed door handles on the BMW 7 Series are integrated flush to the doors in classical handle recesses, enhancing the clean and reduced exterior look. The door handle trim is finished in either Satin Aluminum or, if the M Sport package is chosen, high-gloss black. Opening both side doors on one side reveals a prominent “7” embossed into the B-pillar.

Rear end with newly designed lights and reduced surfaces.

The rear of the new BMW 7 Series replicates the clear and reduced design applied elsewhere. The completely newly designed rear lights are a key element here. They extend far into the rear end, their slim, elongated form underscoring the broad, sporting stance of the new BMW 7 Series. Inside the rear light units, chrome strips help create a high-quality visual effect and a precise light pattern. Their smoked glass look brings cutting-edge elegance to the lights, even when they are off.

All technological components, such as the unlocking function for the trunk lid, the rear-view camera, and the camera washer nozzle, are integrated almost out of sight into the black area of the lights. This allows the surfaces and lights of the rear end to be presented to optimum effect. As at the front, the new BMW badge at the rear end is integrated into a slight recess and framed like a jewel by the surfaces between the rear lights.

Reduced forms and clean surfaces mark the design of the rear apron, which appears as if cut from a single mould. A diffuser-like form creates a modern, technical impression.

Optional M Sport Package and M Sport Pro Package further set the 7 Series apart.

The optional M Sport Package and M Sport Package Pro allow customers to add further sporting accents to any variant of the new BMW 7 Series. Both options include the M Aerodynamics Package, which in turn brings model-specific M Sport exterior design. The M-specific geometry of the front and rear bumpers – a large proportion of which are finished in black – plus prominent air intakes, large air curtains and the rear diffuser are all also included, as are M-specific side skirts, window surrounds, mirror bases, and door handle trim finished in high-gloss black (satin aluminum may also be specified). Other features include 21-inch M aerodynamic wheels, M Sport brakes with callipers in Dark Blue Metallic, door sill strips bearing the BMW M badge, and a special welcome and goodbye animations complete with an M-specific dynamic light carpet.

Offering even greater dynamism and exclusivity is the M Sport Pro Package, which adds further sporting details and equipment to the M Sport Package. It includes a dark BMW M kidney grille, 21-inch M aerodynamic wheels and Black Exterior Contents, which include BMW kidney grille surround and darkened rear lights. With BMW Crystal Headlights specified, M Sport Pro Package adds Shadowline Lights and special darkened crystals.. The M Sport Package Professional also includes a black M rear spoiler, M steering wheel, and an M Sport braking system with black-painted calipers.

Cutting-edge technology meets skilled craftsmanship: BMW Individual Dual-Finish is a world first.

The new BMW Individual Dual-Finish paint concept is genuinely unique. In this complex process, a matte paint finish in the lower area of the vehicle is paired with a manually applied metallic finish in the upper section of the body. Together with the Coach Line – likewise drawn by hand – this creates a discreet but supremely elegant look.

More than any other aspect, the transition between the two paint finishes reveals the striking quality of this BMW innovation and the skilled craftsmanship of the employees who apply it. Metallic and matte paint differ significantly in their composition, but with BMW Individual Dual-Finish there is no noticeable transition point where the two finishes meet.

BMW Individual Dual-Finish paintwork represents the pinnacle of what is currently possible in painting techniques. Experts have spent two-and-a-half years developing this innovative technology, which can only be used at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing and is only available for the BMW 7 Series. More than 20 specially trained employees are involved in a complex process in which the car is prepared manually for each of the 12 steps in the painting process. Among the tasks they carry out are taping the car by hand and sanding down the body to prepare it for the manual painting process. These jobs alone account for nearly half of the work time. Each car ordered with a BMW Individual Dual-Finish will spend more than 75 hours – i.e. over three full days – in the paint shop. This is almost six times longer than for a conventional paint finish.

The reimagined interior features BMW Panoramic iDrive and the debut of a front passenger display – the BMW Passenger Display.

The integration of Neue Klasse technologies – in the form of the display and operating system BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X – opens up a new dimension in BMW-typical driver orientation and new possibilities when it comes to tailoring the design of the BMW 7 Series interior to personal preferences.

The new instrument panel provides the stage for the “floating” Central Display in free-cut design, which is fitted in an ideal ergonomic position next to the steering wheel.

Next to it is the new front-passenger display, another important and design-defining element. The BMW Passenger Display makes its debut in the new BMW 7 Series and is fitted as standard in every 7 Series model.

The BMW Panoramic Vision – with a projection surface extending across the full width of the windscreen, from A-pillar to A-pillar – and the new multifunction steering wheel also make a significant contribution to the cutting-edge interior of the new BMW 7 Series.

From private cinema lounge to mobile workstation, the upgraded BMW Theatre Screen sets new standards all over again.

One of the highlights of the options list for the new BMW 7 Series is the BMW Theatre Screen. Its 31.3-inch touchscreen with 8K resolution and optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos support transforms the rear compartment of the new BMW 7 Series into an exclusive cinema lounge. The new integrated camera allows passengers to make Zoom video calls easily, as if in a mobile office. And an HDMI connection turns the BMW Theatre Screen into an expanded computer display.

Just deploying the BMW Theatre Screen is an experience. The process is accompanied by a sound animation – and the sunshades for the side windows, rear window, and the Panoramic Glass Sunroof are closed and the ambient lighting in the rear compartment is dimmed at the same time. Passengers can effortlessly adapt the positioning of the BMW Theatre Screen to their requirements. The updated BMW Touch Command digital control screens in the rear doors are used not only to move the screen forward and back with ease, but also to adjust the viewing angle. Adding the finishing touches to the BMW Theatre Screen experience is the immersive sound of the Bowers & Wilkins speakers and Dolby Atmos support.

Immersive light experience with new ambient light strip and new light elements.

The new lighting concept inside the BMW 7 Series greets the driver with a harmonious, immersive experience adapted to personal preferences. The welcome animation that unfolds outside the car continues seamlessly to the interior in a neatly composed overall choreography of illumination, sound elements and personalized settings.

An array of light elements generates soft, evenly spread, and diffuse illumination with a wrap-around effect; the sophisticated, modern design creating a pleasant and exclusive ambience inside the car.

An important part of the animation and a central element of the interior design is the new ambient light strip, which reaches across the full width of the cockpit. In daylight it illuminates with a delicate alabaster structure, whereas in darkness it produces a moderately dynamic light effect. The colour and brightness of the light respond to the time of day and – like all the light elements – can be adjusted to personal preferences via the My Modes Personal.

The second style-defining design feature in the new BMW 7 Series are the new light elements integrated seamlessly into the backs of the front seats at head-restraint height. These vertically arranged lights extend the immersive light mood elegantly into the rear compartment.

Finally, there is the optional Sky Lounge Panoramic Glass Sunroof. More than 40 LED lights illuminate a graphic structure extending throughout the interior. The pattern replicates elements of the quilting on the seat surfaces. The colour world of the light effects takes its cues from the activated My Modes, and can also be selected independently.

Speaker covers in the rear doors that are illuminated from the inside, new additional reading lights in the rear compartment and other illumination elements round off the lighting concept.

Bowers & Wilkins sound systems and Dolby Atmos support deliver a high level of listening pleasure. Acoustics have been enhanced.

The new BMW 7 Series is fitted with the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System as standard. It features a seven-band equalizer and up to 18 speakers with attractive metal covers. Its amplifier output is up to 575 watts.

The optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System delivers genuinely high-end audio. Up to 36 speakers and an amplifier output of up to 1,925 watts perfectly showcase every sound and set the standard in the 7 Series’ segment. The fully active audio system brings a seven-band equalizer and seven carefully crafted sound profiles. Additional surround speakers are integrated into the head restraints of both the front seats and the two outer rear seats. And the sound system also has a 4D audio function, which uses exciters in the front and rear seat backrests to improve perception of bass frequencies, even at low volumes.

Audiophile drivers and passengers in vehicles specified with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System will be pleased to find their 7 Series now also offer a rich and varied audio experience in Dolby Atmos quality. Dolby Atmos creates a three-dimensional soundscape for compatible audio formats and allows sound objects to be moved around freely within the cabin. The new BMW 7 Series therefore provides a new and immersive audio experience when streaming films or music.

The further improved interior acoustics of the BMW 7 Series create the ideal environment in which to enjoy the ultimate in audio pleasure. As well as side windows with flush-fitting seals, standard-fit acoustic glazing, an elastic steering gear mounting fitted on the front axle subframe, an additional model-specific motor mount in the BMW i7 and tires containing internal foam absorbers that provide integrated soundproofing (depending on option or package chosen), the 7 Series also features exterior mirror caps that benefit from additional aeroacoustic optimization and improved door insulation.

High-quality materials, classic appointments, and innovative details maximize comfort. Owners can adapt the interior design to their own personal tastes.

The meticulous selection, crafting, and presentation of surfaces, textures and details are key to creating an interior that exudes quality and exclusivity. This devotion to detail can be seen in many different aspects of the new BMW 7 Series interior.

The instrument panel and centre console come as standard with Oak Mirror Finish Fine-Wood Trim with Grey Metallic Highlights. Optional alternatives include Limewood Open-Pored Wood Trim, BMW Individual Ash Flowing Grey Open-Pored Trim and, for the first time, Alcantara interior trim in coordinating interior colours. With this option, the trim strips for the centre console come in Piano Black. The optional M Carbon Trim brings a particularly sporting ambience to vehicles specified with the M Sport or M Sport Pro Packages.

The uncluttered design of the instrument panel continues into the door panel trim. Catching the eye here is the new control panel that groups together frequently used functions elegantly and practically. The controls for the seat backrest, forward/back position, and seat height adjustment are made from crystal glass, providing not only exceptional quality of workmanship for customers to enjoy but also superb look and feel.

BMW Glass controls can also be found in the newly designed centre console – for the start/stop button, gear selector lever, and volume control button. The integrated cup holder is illuminated, while the integrated smartphone tray offering inductive charging with up to 15 watts of power is trimmed in soft Alcantara and has a magnetic holder that keeps mobile phones securely in place. If the driver leaves their mobile phone behind in the smartphone tray, an alert in the goodbye screen reminds them.

New, fully electric slot-type air vents are integrated almost invisibly into the instrument panel – a design solution that feeds into the clean and uncluttered interior look overall. The airflow can be controlled intuitively and precisely via the Central Display.

Customers can choose from a host of appointments and colour combinations to bring a personal touch to the design of their car’s interior. All the elements of the interior are stylishly coordinated.

The new BMW 7 Series is equipped as standard with Merino Leather – available in Black, Mocha, Smoke White, or Tartufo with elaborate quilting. An Alcantara roofliner is also optionally available.

 The optional Merino Leather with Exclusive Contents, available in Black, Mocha, Smoke White, Tartufo, two-tone Caramel/Atlas Grey and new Adelaide Grey, takes the feeling of wellbeing on board the BMW 7 Series to another level. The Alcantara roofliner comes in Black when the leather shades Black, Mocha or Adelaide Grey are specified, while Smoke White,Tartufo and Caramel/Atlas Grey combine with a roofliner in Atlas Grey.

Exceptional quality and an extremely cozy atmosphere are promised by the Merino Leather/Cashmere Wool in the colour combinations Smoke White/Atlas Grey or Black/Dark Grey. The neatly coordinated colours contrast between the leather in the upper section of the seats and the cashmere-rich cloth in the lower section, plus elaborate quilting and fine perforation create a unique impression – both visually and tactily. Their intricate, symmetrically embroidered pattern makes these seats a beautifully eye-catching feature of the interior. The exclusive cashmere wool material combination is also available for the centre armrest and neck cushions. Smoke White/Atlas Grey equips an Alcantara roofliner in Atlas Grey, while Black/Dark Grey can be combined with an Alcantara roofliner in either Black or Ivory White.

First-class seating comfort: standard comfort seats and optional Executive Lounge for the rear compartment.

Standard specification for the BMW 7 Series includes multifunction seats with extensive electric adjustment, as well as seat heating, armrest heating and lumbar support for the driver and front passenger. The seat position can be adjusted easily using the newly designed control panels in the door trim and via the Central Display. The standard multifunction seats also come with active seat ventilation, while a massage function with nine programs and three levels of intensity can be optioned. The rear seats are adjusted using the BMW Touch Command digital control panels in the door trim.

Offering exceptional seating comfort, the Executive Lounge Seating comprises an integrated leg rest for the area behind the front-passenger seat and a quilted and heated centre armrest with high-quality glass insert and integrated, Alcantara-trimmed smartphone tray for wireless device charging. Coordinated adjustment of the angle of the backrest and backrest’s upper section, the forward/backward position of the seat, and the seat angle allows an extraordinarily comfortable reclining position with a torso angle of up to 43°.

The design principle for the leg rest is unique, with its calf support fixed directly to the seat surface without a gap. The front-passenger seat can be moved fully forward and its backrest tilted forward as far as it will go to enable the ideal seating position and legroom for the rear passenger behind it. The adjusting mechanism has been optimized to allow the driver to see in the passenger-side exterior mirror.

Ergonomic and intuitive steering wheels with a new design and new operating philosophy.

Three new steering wheel designs in up to three colours combine eye-catching design with excellent ergonomics and high-quality materials. The new steering wheel with slightly flattened design and vertical spoke is an integral element of the BMW Panoramic iDrive display and operating concept. The multifunction steering wheel with haptic feedback follows the shy-tech principle whereby the controls for the driver assistance functions – if fitted – are illuminated.

Updated automatic doors with Soft Close mechanism offer outstanding ease of use.

The optional automatic doors have been optimized for the updated BMW 7 Series. A button for opening and closing the doors is located in a new, more ergonomically optimal position on the inside of each door handle. A single touch of the newly designed handles set flush into the body is all that is required; the doors will open and close reliably even if the user is wearing gloves or the door handles are iced over. There is also a corresponding button on the inside of each door. A host of other options for using the doors are also available, e.g. the My BMW App, voice commands or the simplified menu structure of BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X.

The new Soft Close mechanism is particularly user friendly, closing the doors smoothly and underscoring the luxurious ambience of the new BMW 7 Series each time the customer gets in and out. An integral servo mode allows the doors to be opened and closed manually with little effort. Plus, the automatic doors now work using radar sensors. These are integrated almost out of sight in the side skirts, front end and rear of the car, and allow the doors to be opened and closed more quickly than was previously possible. The sensors also identify possible obstacles with a high level of precision, which makes the integral collision protection even more effective. The radar sensors detect not only obstacles near the doors but also road users approaching the car, which significantly lowers the risk of collision.

New digital interior mirror.

Another new feature available for the BMW 7 Series is the optional digital interior mirror, which enables the driver to use the conventional visual mirror or a digital mirror function, as they prefer or the situation demands. The digital variant uses a camera – integrated elegantly into the parcel shelf – that shows the view behind the car in the mirror. This technology is especially helpful when using the BMW Theatre Screen, for example. The digital interior mirror will be offered from November 2026.

BMW Panoramic iDrive featuring BMW Operating System X – complete driver orientation, BMW-style.

The visionary BMW Panoramic iDrive system represents the latest generation of the BMW display and operating concept. Centred on the interaction between user and car, it redefines vehicle operation, the display of information and driver orientation. By intelligently linking displays, controls, and software, it creates a fully integrated system that is intuitive, convenient and ergonomic to use and provides the driver with the relevant information at all times.

At the system’s heart is the BMW Panoramic Vision, which employs newly developed technology to project content across the entire width of the lower area of the windscreen. The content shown here is always visible and forms the visual basis of the entire display and operating concept. Driving-related information is displayed in a clearly structured form on the left-hand side in the driver’s field of vision, without restricting their view of the road ahead. The content in the central and right-hand areas of the display can be personalized and is visible to all passengers.

The BMW 3D Head Up Display integrated above the BMW Panoramic Vision projects selected content directly into the driver’s line of sight and purely for their benefit. This display enables highly precise spatial perception – with navigation instructions, for example, or information from the driver assistance systems. The content shown in the BMW 3D Head-Up Display and the BMW Panoramic Vision is perfectly coordinated, with the two complementing each other to create a consistent, clearly structured display experience.

The 17.9-inch Central Display in free-cut design is integrated into BMW Panoramic iDrive as another essential control element. It features sophisticated matrix backlight technology for brilliant graphics and excellent readability in all light conditions. The special free-cut design allows for optimal ergonomic positioning and combines with the improved menu structure featuring QuickSelect to ensure convenient, simple and intuitive touch control.

There is a menu on the Central Display containing widgets that can be moved to the BMW Panoramic Vision by drag and drop. Up to six widgets can be freely arranged in this way to enable quick access to frequently used functions. Further widget content and submenus can be displayed in the BMW Panoramic Vision using the newly developed multifunction steering wheel.

The multifunction steering wheel employs the shy-tech philosophy, meaning its controls are only illuminated when required. The controls for driving assistance and parking functions are located on the left side, while those for infotainment functions, such as phone calls or the media player, can be found on the right. These functions can be operated via a specially designed control panel that provides haptic feedback, allowing the driver to control key functions safely and accurately without taking their eyes off the road.

BMW Panoramic iDrive is underpinned by the BMW Operating System X software. This serves as an intelligent platform for the display and operating system and is designed explicitly for a software-defined vehicle (SDV) approach. The architecture is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and offers excellent update and upgrade capabilities. This means that the system stays up to date for a long time and allows the continuous addition of new functions and digital services. BMW Operating System X meticulously manages all interaction elements and ensures information is consistently presented in a context-sensitive manner that suits the situation at hand.

One of the system’s key features is its wide-ranging customizability. Content, widgets and displays are individually configurable, allowing them to be adapted to personal preferences. Users can select colours, display schemes and background images to create a personalized digital experience. They will also be able to set their own pictures as the background image for the Central Display using the My BMW App. The appearance of the user interface design colours across all displays automatically adjusts to the selected image. Drivers have a wealth of options for tailoring the user interface design as they wish in Personal mode, enabling even greater customization of displays, interactions, and vehicle-related settings. Further My Modes, such as SPORT, EFFICIENT and SILENT, add to the range of personal setups available to customers.

The BMW ID opens the door to the customizable driving experience with BMW Operating System X. Up to seven different users can sign in with their BMW ID, allowing them to enjoy every drive to the fullest with their individual settings. Before setting off, a message greeting the driver by name – together with their personal profile picture if desired – will automatically appear in the Central Display.

The interplay between the BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW 3D Head-Up Display, Central Display, and multifunction steering wheel – all controlled by BMW Operating System X – creates a consistent, clearly structured display and operating concept. Physical and digital controls combine to deliver a seamless user experience that is designed specifically for driver orientation and ergonomics. In the process, the “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” principle is reinterpreted and elevated to a more advanced technological level.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, enhanced by Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology.

The multimodal operating logic of BMW Panoramic iDrive combines touch, haptic and voice-based interactions. The enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant plays a key role here, enabling numerous vehicle functions, navigation destination entry and media content to be controlled using natural language, without the need for defined voice commands.

The self-learning assistant turns the vehicle into an intelligent digital companion. The voice assistant can be summoned in the usual way with the prompt “Hey BMW” or the push of a button on the steering wheel’s right-hand control panel. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can help to control the windows, air conditioning, seating comfort, phone calls, in-car entertainment and far more besides. It can also be used to call up a large number of function menus or operate certain apps.

The addition of Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant increases the range of functions even further. The integration of Amazon Alexa+ into the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant marks a technological leap forward focused on adding value for the customer. The AI technology used is a large language model (LLM), a type of generative AI that “understands” language and is capable of formulating its own responses. This results in more dialogue-based verbal interaction, enabling intuitive and intelligent exchanges, access to external knowledge bases, cloud-based services and media content, as well as control of vehicle functions. Linking the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to an Amazon account allows the user to search for and stream music, listen to the latest news and access a wide range of other content effortlessly. Availability will be gradually expanded, starting with the German and US markets.

At the driver’s request, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also able to offer proactive suggestions based on usage patterns and other factors. BMW Operating System X further expands this intelligent capability by taking far more contexts into account, e.g. based on the driving situation, environmental analysis or interior sensing.

A highlight of the new BMW 7 Series interior: standard-fitted BMW Passenger Display takes entertainment for the front passenger to the next level.

The BMW Passenger Display, which is making its debut in the new BMW 7 Series and will be fitted as standard, is a first for the BMW brand. Together with the Central Display, it forms a defining element of the display and operating philosophy in the new BMW 7 Series. Measuring 14.6 inches, it offers the same sophisticated technology as the Central Display.

The BMW Passenger Display has been specifically designed to provide entertainment for the front passenger during the journey. The full HD display allows easy and intuitive multi-touch operation. The screen seems to merge seamlessly into the Central Display with free-cut design. It gives the front passenger full access to the wide range of BMW Entertainment options, including video streaming and TV programs, gaming, music and much more besides. Log-in with a BMW ID is not required. BMW Digital Premium includes the necessary data allowance and is available on all the car’s displays. An integrated shield function ensures the driver can stay focused on the task of driving at all times. The interior camera detects any driver distraction while on the move and automatically dims the display.

If there is no front passenger in the car, the BMW Passenger Display will automatically switch to a reduced mode and blend harmoniously into the other displays inside the BMW. Here, the display background is adjusted to suit the active My Mode and the ambient lighting.

Extensive upgrade for the unrivalled BMW Theatre Screen – 8K streaming, gaming, Zoom video calls.

The BMW 7 Series update also includes a far-reaching upgrade for the BMW Theatre Screen. The entire surface of the 31.3-inch 8K touchscreen, together with all its functions, can now be operated by touch. And the occupants in the rear can now also access the BMW video streaming platform and use numerous additional popular entertainment and information apps. The apps are easily downloaded via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. A wide range of video games is also available via AirConsole.

The connectivity provided by BMW Digital Premium – 4 years of service are included as standard – is all that is required to download and use the apps. Devices such as headphones and game controllers can be paired via Bluetooth. There is also an HDMI port in the centre console e.g. for plugging in a TV streaming stick or laptop.

The BMW Theatre Screen additionally comes with a new built-in camera, making it simple to make video calls via Zoom from the rear seats.

Modern, powerful software and electronics architecture for future-proof vehicle functions.

The new BMW 7 Series benefits from the completely new E/E architecture developed for the Neue Klasse as the basis for a “software-defined vehicle” (SDV). This makes the vehicle more intelligent and efficient overall, with greater capabilities. The centralized high-performance computers together boast 20 times more processing power than the current generation of models. This means the vehicle is prepared for upcoming software and function updates, including interactive AI features. The zonal wiring harness architecture reduces harness weight by around 30 percent while saving around 2,000 feet of wiring. As well as enabling shorter, thinner wiring, it uses digital smart eFuses for intelligent power distribution and makes a significant contribution to improving the vehicle’s overall energy efficiency.

The new electronics architecture underpins a more advanced software architecture that will keep all future BMW models fully up to date via software updates. In view of the wealth of digital functions in a software-defined vehicle, it is crucial that functions can be continuously refined on stable software platforms instead of always having to be newly developed. That is what we have achieved with the new BMW model generation, starting with the Neue Klasse.

Top-class in-car entertainment – greatly enhanced entertainment offering, including apps from popular third-party providers.

BMW Operating System X offers customers more in-car entertainment options than ever before. The convenience of using the extensive app, video, and gaming portfolio – with unlimited data – provided with the BMW Digital Premium package is included for four years as standard. A single connection per car is all that’s required, and this is then available to enjoy entertainment offerings on the Central Display, BMW Passenger Display and BMW Theatre Screen.

Customers are also able to access the Video app (powered by TiVo™), which provides an ever-expanding range of content, such as news and live/on demand streaming platforms. Videos can be streamed on the Central Display, BMW Passenger Display and BMW Theatre Screen when the vehicle is stationary. This functionality remains available to use on the BMW Passenger Display and BMW Theatre Screen while on the move. By signing in with existing accounts, customers can resume movies or series from the exact point they left off at home.

The AirConsole app provided by BMW Operating System X offers great entertainment for all passengers – with world-famous classics that have been specially adapted for the in-car gaming experience, such as UNO® Car Party!. Hot Wheels: Xtreme Overdrive™ from Mattel is a new highlight in the extensive AirConsole gaming library. With AirConsole, players can use their smartphones as controllers, allowing all passengers to play with or against each other.

Customers can obtain further games and apps for in-car entertainment from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. Selected games can now also be controlled with the Bluetooth controllers for standard games consoles. The BMW ConnectedDrive Store already features a total of over 60 apps worldwide. Categories include music & audio, entertainment, gaming, news, and travel & local – and the choice will continue to grow.

BMW Digital Premium: the flexible, complete package for entertainment, security functions and extended navigation features.

The BMW Digital Premium package includes the Security Assistant, which comprises a host of useful functions to give the customer greater peace of mind. Attempted thefts and parking bumps will trigger push notifications in the My BMW App, for instance. And in the event of an accident, the BMW Drive Recorder instantly makes exterior footage of what happened available in the car, and this footage can then be exported to a mobile phone. The anti-theft and parking collision recorder also makes automatic video recordings. The optional Remote Inside and Remote 3D View functions additionally allow customers to take a glance inside their car and check its immediate vicinity using the My BMW App.

In addition, BMW Digital Premium expands the range of navigation functions within BMW Maps. Additional real-time traffic information, satellite views, 3D building models and proactive tips assist with accurate and anticipatory route planning. Information on parking facilities and points of interest is also presented in greater detail. Precise and realistic visualisation of traffic lanes facilitates navigation guidance when dealing with complex road layouts in cities.

The data required for entertainment functions is included with BMW Digital Premium, meaning there is no need for customers to provide a data connection by using a smartphone as a hotspot or signing in to a Wi-Fi network. This connection can be used with the Central Display, BMW Passenger Display and BMW Theatre Screen. What’s more, the 5G-ready vehicle telematics system ensures the best possible streaming speed at all times. In the new BMW 7 Series, the features of BMW Digital Premium are included free of charge for four years. Once this period has expired, the package can be extended on a monthly or annual basis via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. New features and services can be added over time to provide an always up-to-date, connected and future-ready digital user experience.

Effortless smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Wireless use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also included as standard. Any available metadata for media titles or route guidance instructions that are active in the current mode is shown to the driver in the BMW Panoramic Vision and BMW 3D Head-Up Display in an intelligently presented form. The QuickSelect widgets continue to be available in the Central Display’s home screen, while the content projected from the smartphone is embedded alongside them so that it fits into the display’s shape. Once linked, the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto icon will be added to the menu bar, allowing the projected content to be displayed in full-screen mode.

The new BMW i7 60 xDrive.

The BMW i7 captures the range’s forward-looking premium character with particular flair and now offers an even more effortless drive. More comfortable throttle response, for example, allows even more sensitive control over this luxury sedan, which offers driving pleasure, passenger comfort and a luxurious ambience without compromise – and with zero local emissions. The BMW i7 comes with two sound-isolated electric motors. These provide compellingly instantaneous and virtually silent power delivery along with supreme traction and directional stability thanks to the standard all-wheel drive. The new driving sounds, sound effects and acoustic signals of BMW HypersonX add another layer to the all-encompassing experience in the BMW i7 60 xDrive.

The BMW i7 60 xDrive produces a combined maximum output of 536 hp and maximum system torque of 549 lb-ft. This allows the BMW i7 60 xDrive to accelerate to 100 km/h from standstill in about 4.8 seconds onto an electronically limited top speed of 240 km/h.

New high-voltage battery: improved range – partly thanks to the increase in usable energy content to as much as 115.5 kWh enabled by sixth-generation BMW eDrive cylindrical cells.

The high-voltage battery in the new all-electric BMW i7 now features the new cylindrical cell from the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology, which made its debut in the BMW iX3 – the first representative of the Neue Klasse. Compared to the previous Gen5 prismatic cells, the volumetric energy density of the cylindrical cells is 20 percent higher. Combined with increased drive system efficiency, they are a key enabler of longer ranges and faster charging. As a result, the new BMW i7 60 xDrive is now able to offer customers an estimated range up to 560 km.

The updated i7 is fitted with a new high-voltage battery housing with the same external dimensions as before and with the Gen6 cylindrical cells integrated in a modular arrangement. This solution is unique within the BMW Group’s all-electric portfolio. The high voltage battery’s usable energy content has increased by more than ten percent to a maximum of 115.5 kWh (net).

Thanks to a variety of BMW EfficientDynamics measures, such as the use of silicon carbide semiconductor components for the power electronics (SiC inverters) and friction optimized wheel bearings, overall vehicle efficiency has also been increased by up to seven percent.

Electric motors based on the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor.

Along with the new high-voltage battery with the latest Gen6 cylindrical cells and the overhauled charging technology, the updated BMW eDrive technology aboard the BMW i7 also comprises the highly integrated drive units at the front and rear axles, These have been optimized through the integration of an SiC inverter and bring together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single, compact housing.

The electric motors in the BMW i7 work according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor, where it is a precisely controllable electrical feed that sets the rotor in motion rather than fixed permanent magnets. This allows the use of critical rare earth metals (required for magnetic components) to be avoided altogether in the manufacture of the rotor.

Adaptive recuperation takes traffic lights into account and can automatically brake the car to a stop.

The BMW i7 boasts a sophisticated system of adaptive recuperation control with the ability to automatically decelerate to a standstill in response to vehicles in front or at traffic lights. This significantly improves driving comfort at near-stationary speeds. Adaptive recuperation generally allows the intensity of brake energy regeneration during overrun and braking to be automatically optimized for the traffic situation, as detected using data from the navigation system and the driver assistance systems’ sensors. When approaching a junction, for example, the level of recuperation can be increased (also possible if route guidance isn’t activated), thereby feeding energy back into the high-voltage battery while harnessing the deceleration effect.

On the open road, on the other hand, the coasting function can take over, allowing the car to “freewheel” with no drive power whenever the driver eases off the accelerator.

In addition to adaptive recuperation, the driver can also choose a high, medium or low brake energy regeneration setting for all driving situations. Driving position B automatically activates the highest recuperation setting, which also produces the distinctive one-pedal feeling. The range horizon clearly illustrates the impact of driving style on the high-voltage battery’s charge level.

The charging experience in the new BMW i7: user friendly, intelligent and efficient with a significantly increased charging rate and standard NACS charge port.

With its electric current strength of up to 630 amps and a significant increase in the maximum charging rate from 195 to 240 kW, the new BMW i7 can now be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 29 minutes at certain fast charging stations.

Every electrified BMW i7 will be fitted as standard with an NACS charge port, enabling access to the nationwide Supercharger network, as well as adapters for charging at stations with other types of connectors.

Charging-optimized route planning and predictive thermal management for faster DC charging.

The BMW i7 features many innovations for convenient, fast charging on the go, such as charging-optimized routes planned according to individual criteria with automatic battery preparation for faster DC charging, or user-friendly charging stops with Shell Recharge and Plug & Charge integrated within the My BMW App for automatic authentication at charging stations.

The BMW i7 is able to store customised charging settings for multiple individual charging points. If the vehicle returns to a charging point, it will automatically apply the previous settings.

The BMW Maps navigation system calculates a charging-optimized route complete with charging stops if the entered destination is beyond the current range. The driver sets a preferred minimum charge level for when the vehicle reaches both charging points and the final destination, and determines which charging station operators to give preference to. With the help of AI, the system uses past charging cycles to, for example, ascertain the charging power that can realistically be expected, susceptibility to faults and the exact location data of individual charging stations – and then incorporates the optimal charging station into the route planning. To offer customers complete transparency, they are also given information on current occupancy, the number of charging points and connector types. The vehicle and My BMW App synchronize up-to-date information during the journey, allowing passengers to check the route and adapt it if necessary. The availability of places to eat and drink, play areas, restrooms, and shopping facilities near the charging station is also indicated.

Battery preparation preconditions the high-voltage battery to the ideal temperature prior to charging at a DC charging station, thereby increasing the charging rate as soon as the car is plugged in and shortening charging time. When navigating to a DC charging station using BMW Maps, the BMW i7 automatically adjusts the battery to the temperature required. Alternatively, customers are able to activate this function manually via the Central Display or My BMW App. The battery’s current temperature status and the time remaining for battery preparation can be checked at any time by going to Vehicle Status in the BMW i7 or via the My BMW App.

The new BMW 750e xDrive PHEV: coming in 2027.

The plug-in hybrid model, the BMW 750e xDrive, also offers a dynamic driving experience. In this model, the six cylinder in-line engine provides 308 hp and is paired with a 194-hp electric motor integrated into the transmission. This enables the hybrid system to achieve a combined output of 483 hp. Peak torque is 516 lb-ft. The new BMW 750e xDrive requires only about 4.8 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h from rest. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, or 140 km/h when driving on all-electric power.

Production of the BMW 750e xDrive is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

BMW Symbiotic Drive keeps the driver involved at all times in the interplay of human and artificial intelligence.

The advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems from BMW are designed down to the smallest detail for seamless interaction between assistance and human driving habits. The aim here is not the highest possible level of automation in every situation, but a safe driver assistance experience that offers maximum benefit and remains controllable at all times. As a result, the driver always stays involved in the interplay between human and artificial intelligence. When driver assistance is active, for instance, the driver can accelerate, steer and brake as required, without instantly deactivating the assistance system in the process. The clear operating logic and displays in BMW Panoramic iDrive ensure assisted driving is intuitive and controllable at all times, enabling the safe use of the highest SAE Level 2 automation. The symbiotic interaction between driver and vehicle can also be experienced with active safety functions that work unobtrusively in the background as silent companions, such as the Lane Keeping Assistant. The driver’s intention is determined based on steering behavior and eye tracking, meaning that the system only assists with warnings and steering inputs when the driver is unintentionally drifting out of their lane or an impending collision is detected.

Thanks to BMW Symbiotic Drive, active safety functions will only intervene when danger is detected if the driver is distracted or does not have the situation under control. Safety features include the Lane Keeping Assistant with active lane return, automatic evasion maneuvers within the car’s own lane, Active Blind Spot Detection and Side Collision Protection when there is a risk of a lateral collision, plus Frontal Cross-Traffic Alert with Brake Intervention when turning into a road or exiting a parking space. The Forward Collision Mitigation with Evasion Assistant is also effective in helping prevent frontal collisions using maximum braking power if necessary, and also now does so in response to wildlife crossing the road. Added to which, the exit warning function delays doors being opened, e.g. when there is a cyclist approaching.

Parking has never been so easy – with activation of the new standard Automatic Park Assistant directly from the steering wheel, AI-supported parking space detection and manoeuvre planning.

The standard Parking Assistant Professional package is capable of semi-automated parking, while the redesigned visualization of the surrounding area makes the selection of detected parking spaces even more intuitive. Automated parking maneuvers are carried out more swiftly and smoothly. Parking Assistant Professional provides a 360° all-round view with the option of switching between curb, 3D and car wash views. The Manoeuvre Assistant is able to record and then perform recurring maneuvers (covering a distance of up to 200 metres). Parking Assistant Professional also provides extensive options for carrying out parking and stored manoeuvres remotely from up to six metres away using the My BMW smartphone app. All driver and parking assistance functions can also be activated digitally from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store at a later stage.

Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with Integral Active Steering and active roll stabilisation for maximum ride comfort and handling precision.

The Adaptive Chassis Control Professional available as an option for selected models offers customers another way of maximising not just the ride comfort of the BMW 7 Series but also its agility and steering precision. This adds an active roll stabilization feature that uses a 48V electric motor positioned in the centre of the vehicle and active anti-roll bars to smooth out – exceptionally quickly and precisely – the lateral forces inducing body roll through dynamically taken corners. Adaptive Chassis Control Professional improves agility, directional accuracy and handling precision, and also enables highly dynamic steering response thanks to its ability to stabilise body roll more effectively. As a result, the driver enjoys extremely precise reactions from the steering and particularly fleet-footed performance. The potential for lateral acceleration and dynamic handling is also increased with Adaptive Chassis Control Professional, due to the optimum distribution of roll moment as a function of the driving state and the resulting balance between the contact forces at the front and rear wheels.

Active roll stabilization also increases comfort when driving in a straight line by decoupling the fixed connection between each axle’s wheels provided by a conventional anti-roll bar. As a result, suppression of body vibrations is also improved when driving straight ahead or at low levels of lateral acceleration: since the adaptive two-axle air suspension with self-levelling function maintains the full range of spring travel even when the vehicle is heavily laden, the addition of active roll stabilization makes it possible to activate a softer air spring setting and increase ride comfort. The amount of body roll caused by surface imperfections on one side of the vehicle is reduced thanks to the decoupled anti-roll bars. This has the effect of decreasing the lateral acceleration forces and the obtrusive side-to-side head movements they can cause.

As well as reducing rolling movements caused by bumps in the road on one side of the car, the Active Roll Comfort function fitted in the latest BMW 7 Series goes further still by actively adjusting the body height on the corresponding side of the vehicle at the same time.

The BMW Digital Key Plus: far more than just a key.

The BMW Digital Key Plus is becoming the preferred form of vehicle access. Here, smartphones and smartwatches from all leading manufacturers can be easily set up to work as a vehicle key. Ultra-wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth technology are used to enable the smartphone and vehicle to communicate with one another at close range. The UWB technology allows the user’s location to be pinpointed extremely precisely while also ensuring the highest possible level of vehicle access security (certified according to the Car Connectivity Consortium standard). Customers are able to share the digital key with others easily and securely using a messaging app, while setting individual roles and rights at the same time. It also enables the use of additional functions via the customer’s smartphone wallet, such as remote operation of the trunk lid.

A welcome sequence – featuring visual effects to accompany the customer as they move from the outside of the vehicle into its interior – begins when the customer approaches their car with the BMW Digital Key Plus. The welcome varies depending on the car’s specification. From approaching the car to pulling away in it, the driver can simply leave their smartphone in their pocket the entire time.

In addition to the BMW Digital Key Plus, the driver is also able to use the high-quality physical key to open and lock the vehicle at any time.

Munich. At the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich, the BMW Group will be presenting the most recent highlights of its ongoing transformation in the key action areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity. The latest new models with electrified powertrains from the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands, plus Vision Vehicles and concepts for individual mobility in tomorrow’s world all serve to underline the company’s innovative strength in these fields. As the dawn of a new era in personal mobility approaches, the BMW Group is set to unveil its latest highlight, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which brings together the Group’s development expertise in the three crucial disciplines for the future of mobility.

The IAA Mobility show is being staged in Munich for the second time. For the BMW Group and its brands, this provides an excellent opportunity to enter into constructive dialogue on the future of individual mobility with local people, as well as with visitors to the show from outside Munich and other stakeholders. The IAA Mobility Summit at the exhibition centre and the BMW Group’s Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz in the heart of Munich will be the main arenas where BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad present their new products on 5 – 10 September 2023. Electric, digital, circular – the focus areas of the BMW Group.

The BMW Group’s presence at IAA Mobility 2023 revolves around the company’s rigorous focus on electric, digital and circular mobility for the future and the latest progress it has made in these areas. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse is joined by a selection of new models from across the Group’s brands whose electrified powertrains, digital innovations and resource-efficient manufacturing illustrate the ongoing process of change in a variety of ways.

The new products poised for launch by the BMW brand include the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series. The new BMW i7 Protection – the first ever all-electric protection vehicle in the luxury sedan segment – is also making its debut at IAA Mobility 2023.

MINI is unveiling the members of the brand’s new model family for the first time with the help of two world premieres: the new fully electric MINI Cooper and new fully electric MINI Countryman will both be on show at the Open Space site. A new model with all-electric drive also forms the centrepiece of BMW Motorrad’s line-up at Max-Joseph-Platz. Conceived as a compact eParkourer with a trailblazing design, the new BMW CE 02 injects fresh impetus into the urban mobility scene.

Locally emission-free mobility sets the theme for the models on show.

The IAA Mobility show will be officially opened on 5 September at Munich’s exhibition centre. The BMW Group will be represented at its stand in Hall A2, where the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be unveiled to kick off the event. The BMW i7 Protection all-electric protection vehicle will also be presented for the first time at the IAA Mobility Summit.

The IAA Mobility Summit is taking place under the banner “Experience Connected Mobility” and is aimed primarily at trade visitors. It will showcase trends and technological innovations for future mobility over the course of numerous talks, presentations and panel discussions. One of the central topics is the use of hydrogen as an energy source for current and future vehicles. BMW is carrying out pioneering work in this field with its development and practical testing of a Sports Activity Vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also being exhibited at the Summit.

Locally emission-free mobility is also the dominant theme for the models awaiting visitors to the Open Space site. BMW has at least one purely electrically powered representative in all relevant model segments. The brand is presenting its entire line-up to the public, ranging from the BMW iX1 compact Sports Activity Vehicle via the BMW i4 and BMW i5 to the BMW iX and the BMW i7 luxury sedan.

The Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz can be visited free of charge on 5 – 9 September from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 10 September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, BMW Welt will continue to provide an attractive destination for all automotive enthusiasts during IAA Mobility 2023. World premiere: the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

At IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group is offering visitors a preview of the Neue Klasse – the forthcoming generation of models from BMW. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse brings together innovations from the areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity in signature BMW style. The Vision Vehicle takes design, control/operation, efficiency and sustainability into a whole new dimension – one that it will be possible to experience on the road before long.

During IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be on show at both the Summit and the Open Space. The new Vision Vehicle incorporates the latest innovations in the BMW Group’s key future-focused fields. It therefore builds on the BMW i Vision Circular and the BMW i Vision Dee – which have already demonstrated the BMW Group’s development expertise in the areas of circular economy and digitalisation – and combines their qualities with further new developments in exterior and interior design, user experience and powertrain and battery technology.

World premiere: the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.

As well as the all-electric BMW i5, the brand is exhibiting two other model variants with electrified powertrains at IAA Mobility 2023. As early as spring 2024, two models featuring state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan range. Their six-cylinder and four-cylinder in-line petrol engines from the new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics units will each be combined with the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems. This will result in a notable increase in output and much sharper power delivery, while also significantly improving efficiency and electric range compared to the outgoing model generation.

The electric motor purpose-developed for the new plug-in hybrid system is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission together with its power electronics. The highly integrated drive unit contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the maximum combined output of 360 kW/489 hp in the case of the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.1 – 0.8 l/100 km [256.8 – 353.1 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 20.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 24 – 19 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures) and 220 kW/299 hp for the new BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 – 0.6 l/100 km [353.1 – 470.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 21.4 – 18.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 19 – 14 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures).

A BMW-patented innovation has been used to enhance the electric motor’s power delivery in the new plug-in hybrid models: a pre-gearing stage enables the nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) to be increased to effective torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission input for the motor. The compact electric motor is therefore able to boost torque by an amount that would normally only be possible using a larger unit and makes a clear difference both when accelerating off the line and putting in a rapid burst of speed. Electric range is now up to 79 – 90 kilometres (49 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 87 – 101 kilometres (54 – 63 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 530e Sedan.

The lithium-ion high-voltage battery’s space-saving positioning within the vehicle’s underbody has a beneficial effect on both the car’s centre of gravity and the capacity of its luggage compartment, which holds a total of 520 litres in the plug-in hybrid models – meaning it is just as large as that offered by their purely combustion-engined siblings. The usable energy provided by the high-voltage battery has climbed to 19.4 kWh. At the same time, maximum charging capacity has doubled compared to the outdoing models and now stands at 7.4 kW, enabling the high-voltage battery to be fully recharged from empty in 3.0 hours. When hooked up to a conventional domestic power socket, a full vehicle charge is completed in 9.8 hours.

World premiere: the BMW i7 Protection.

BMW is presenting a new generation of protection vehicles in the luxury sedan segment at the IAA Mobility 2023 show. The new BMW i7 Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0 kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is absolutely unique in this segment, as it is the world’s first ever certified protection sedan with an all-electric drive system. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any limitations, as does the new V8-engined BMW 7 Series Protection (fuel consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 14.6 l/100 km [19.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 328 g/km, provisional figures).

Both models blend the integrated protection concept channelled into the development of the new BMW 7 Series range with outstanding levels of ride comfort and spaciousness, advanced equipment features and the unbeatable dynamic prowess for which BMW is renowned. The concept centres around the new and unique BMW Protection Core, which forms a self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody and roof, plus armoured glass. The result is customised protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. The glass in the new protection vehicles even meets the requirements for the highest class of civilian protection, VPAM 10.

The all-electric BMW i7 Protection is equipped with one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear. Together they generate a combined output of 400 kW/544 hp and maximum combined torque of 745 Nm (549 lb-ft), and create an electric all-wheel-drive system. The new BMW i7 Protection sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 9.0 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h (99 mph). The instantaneous, precisely orchestrated power delivery from the two motors guarantees exceptional traction and directional stability even when the car is being driven hard and performing challenging manoeuvres, such as when escaping from an attack.

Tuned and optimised specifically for this model, the chassis technology also makes allowance for the additional weight of its armouring, resulting in superbly assured performance in any situation. Another unique offering for this segment is the inclusion of Integral Active Steering as standard. This reduces the car’s turning circle, increases agility when cornering at speed and improves driving comfort for rear-seat passengers. The 20-inch light-alloy wheels are a further standout feature. The PAX tyres that also come as standard allow the car to continue its journey at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the event of a total loss of pressure.

The latest generation of BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5 is fitted, complete with the BMW Curved Display. The system is intuitive to use and operates in a way familiar to BMW drivers. The special functions relevant to occupant protection are also operated via BMW iDrive. The new protection vehicles can also be tailored precisely to any purpose, with items including a fresh-air supply system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio transceivers and flag poles for when the car is on official duty, plus other special customer-specific options.

Trailblazing: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen presented at IAA Mobility 2023 provides further evidence of the company’s superlative innovative strength in the field of drive technology. A pilot series of the Sports Activity Vehicle with hydrogen fuel-cell drive, developed on the basis of the current BMW X5, has entered service for demonstration and test purposes with various target groups around the world. This allows selected test groups who haven’t been involved in the development process to get behind the wheel of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and gain a direct impression of its attributes for the first time.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is equipped with the latest, fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology. The highly integrated drive unit at the rear axle draws its energy from a high-performance battery with li-ion technology that was specially developed for the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle and generates maximum output of 295 kW/401 hp. The electric motor also doubles as a generator that feeds energy back into the high-performance battery on the overrun or under braking.

The model’s two 700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) together hold six kilograms of gaseous hydrogen and can be refilled in three to four minutes. A chemical reaction takes place in the fuel cell system between the hydrogen and oxygen from the air, through which the electric power for the electric motor is generated. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen achieves a range of 504 kilometres (313 miles) in the WLTP cycle without having to refill the tanks. The hydrogen-powered SAV completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in under six seconds and goes on to reach a top speed in excess of 180 km/h (112 mph).

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capabilities and short refuelling stops with zero tailpipe emissions and hallmark BMW driving dynamics. Its hydrogen fuel-cell technology has the potential – provided the necessary basic conditions are in place – to serve as an additional pillar in the BMW Group’s future powertrain portfolio. As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is following an approach that embraces all technologies when it comes to drive systems. The company is therefore readying itself for differing customer requirements, infrastructure standards and political and regulatory frameworks in the various regions of the world. BMW unveils a new generation of protection vehicles in the luxury sedan segment.
The two models developed on the basis of the new BMW 7 Series succeed in blending an unrivalled protection concept with outstanding levels of ride comfort and spaciousness, exceptionally advanced equipment features and the class-beating dynamic prowess for which the brand is renowned. As the world’s first ever protection sedan with an all-electric drive system, the BMW i7 Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0 kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is a genuine trailblazer. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any limitations, as does the new combustion-engine BMW 7 Series Protection (fuel consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 15.6 l/100 km [18.1 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 355 g/km, provisional figures).

The integrated security concept of the new BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection was factored into the development of the new BMW 7 Series range. It centres around the new BMW Protection Core, which is unique worldwide and comprises the model-specific self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody and roof and armoured glass. Both models will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in an elaborate “craft manufacturing” process. The two protection vehicles are set to make their public debut at the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich, with deliveries to customers requiring special protection commencing in December 2023.

The new protection models offer customised protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. They have been classified as offering class VR9 protection based on the internationally recognised official test criteria of Germany’s Vereinigung der Prüfstellen für Angriffshemmende Materialien und Konstruktionen (Association of Test Laboratories for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions – VPAM, for short). The certification is based, among other things, on the third edition of the guidelines for Bullet Resistant Vehicles (VPAM BRV) with regard to ballistic resistance and the guidelines for Explosive Resistant Vehicles (VPAM ERV, third edition) and PAS 300 with regard to blast resistance. The glass for the two models even protects against fire from calibre 7.62x54 R ammunition — a threat from the highest civilian resistance class VPAM 10. A partial protection extension is also available as an option for the new BMW 7 Series Protection in defined bodywork areas against fire from VPAM 10 ammunition.

The first all-electric model in its protection category and offered exclusively in Europe, the BMW i7 Protection demonstrates how outstanding qualities in terms of security level, driving dynamics, ride comfort and interior comfort are perfectly compatible with a rigorous focus on sustainability. Its arrival sees the BMW Group once again acting as a pioneer in the field of locally emission-free mobility for individuals requiring special protection. At the IAA Mobility 2021 show, the company presented the BMW Concept iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6, the first protection vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system to be certified anywhere in the world. It showcased the BMW Group’s ability to come up with sustainable solutions even in this specialised vehicle segment by applying its standout development expertise.

Innovative protection concept featuring unique BMW Protection Core.

The innovative protection concept for BMW’s new protection sedans is a product of traditional know-how combined with cutting-edge technology. BMW has now amassed 45 years of experience in the development and production of protection vehicles. The protection concept currently applied was devised as part of the series production development process for the new BMW 7 Series and, more than ever, offers major advantages over armouring a finished vehicle at a later date.

This is largely thanks to the unique BMW Protection Core, which sees the entire supporting structure for a protection sedan’s body constructed from armour steel for the first time. Its three-dimensionally engineered elements are all made of exceptionally resistant, hot-formed steel alloys. The BMW Protection Core forms a self-supporting protective cell, which is then combined with protection-spec doors, armouring for the underbody and safety glass.

Special armouring designed to offer maximum protection against explosives in particular has been used for both the roof and underbody of the two protection sedans. This means the occupants are also protected from drone attacks with explosive charges, for example, and from fragments dispersed by hand grenades on detonation.

Also to be found on the list of standard security features for the BMW 7 Series Protection is a self-sealing fuel tank, with special casing that enables it to seal itself after being hit by a bullet to prevent any loss of fuel.

In addition to this, experts from an independent state testing institute conduct firearms and explosive tests on the vehicle. The petrol-engined version of the new protection sedan has a latest-generation V8 unit under the bonnet. Its BMW TwinPower Turbo technology includes an upgraded turbocharging system with electrically operated blow-off valve and indirect charge air cooling, along with a cross-bank exhaust manifold. The new 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine uses 48V mild hybrid technology to optimise power delivery and efficiency.

The model-specific light-alloy wheels in star-spoke design are fitted with tyres – supplied by Michelin in the dimensions 255-740 R510 – that have been specifically developed for the protection sedans. The large diameter of these tyres and the extremely high volume of air they hold compared with rivals enhance ride comfort, while the larger contact area benefits traction and driving stability. Driver assistance systems with information and warning function.

In keeping with their status as protection vehicles, the new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection are equipped with an extensive selection of driver assistance systems. The functionality of this tech is focused on supporting professional chauffeurs with information and warnings, but without actively intervening to control the vehicle.

The highly advanced sensors developed for the new BMW 7 Series range and all of the cameras available for the luxury sedan are also fitted on the protection vehicles. These provide precise and detailed information on the area around the vehicle in all situations. The requisite data and images are supplied by e.g. the parking view, Panorama View, Remote 3D View and BMW Drive Recorder functions included in the Parking Assistant Plus package. Extensive comfort-enhancing features with exclusive details.

In order to optimise visibility out of the new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection in low ambient temperatures, an electric heating function for both the windscreen and the front sections of the side windows comes as standard. Model-specific pre-heating is available as an option.

Another item on the options list is a cool box integrated between the rear seats to ensure the on-board drinks supplies are kept cold. Its net capacity of eight litres offers sufficient space for two water bottles and two glasses, which can be cooled to 4 or 10 degrees Celsius as desired.

The standard-fitted Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, meanwhile, lays on a high-end audio experience. The 1,265-watt digital amplifier, individually adjustable equalizers and 28 speakers combine to deliver a full, even sound for all those on board. The system also includes a pair of exciters integrated into each of the seats, which convert low bass frequencies into noticeable vibrations.

An exclusive convenience feature offered for the first time on a BMW model is motorised assistance for opening and closing the doors, which comes as standard. Also unique in this segment is a function that enables occupants to close the doors automatically at the touch of a button after climbing in.

Passengers in the second row of seats in the new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection benefit from electrically operated roller sunblinds for the windows on both sides. The blinds extend horizontally from the B-pillar towards the C-pillar and offer what is known as a spy position. Here, the sunblind opens by around ten centimetres at the touch of a button to allow a view outside. From this position, passengers have the option of opening or closing the sunblind fully. A model-specific roller sunblind for the rear window is also included as standard.

The integrated protection concept of the protection sedans and production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing maximise the scope for customers to put their personal touch on the exterior and interior. Offered as an option alongside the standard illuminated BMW kidney Iconic Glow are the BMW crystal headlights Iconic Glow. The new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection can be specified in almost all of the body colours available for the new BMW 7 Series range. These include the BMW Individual paint finishes and BMW Individual special paint finishes. The appointments and design of the interior can likewise be adapted to personal needs and desires at a detail level. Multifunction seats, BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated seats for the front and rear occupants are all part of standard specification. A massage function can be specified for all seats as an option. The optional Executive Lounge includes comfort seats with a reclining function for the rear seat behind the front passenger. This shows the image feed from the Reversing Assist Camera in the control display’s panorama view at all driving speeds and on any kind of route. The standard-fitted intercom system allows the car’s occupants to communicate with people on the outside without having to open doors or windows. Key features here are microphones integrated into the exterior mirrors, an outside speaker, the hands-free microphone embedded in the headliner and supplementary speakers in the interior. With two electric motors generating a maximum system output of 650 hp and an M-tuned chassis, the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive delivers a captivating blend of electric mobility and performance. The range-topping model of the new BMW 7 Series line-up will accelerate from  0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, making it the quickest fully electric BMW model.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive marks another milestone for BMW M GmbH in its transformation to electric mobility. Following the launch of the BMW i4 M50 xDrive – BMW M GmbH’s best-selling model worldwide in 2022 – and the BMW iX M60 xDrive, the i7 M70 xDrive is the company’s third performance model to have an all-electric drive system.

The new i7 M70 xDrive will make its global debut at the Auto Shanghai international motor show in China and will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing – the competence centre for electric drive system production where both the electric motors and the high-voltage batteries for all variants of the BMW i7 are manufactured on site. The worldwide market launch of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive will start in the second half of 2023.

Rounding out the 7 series offering, the new 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid will be added to the portfolio as a 2024 model-year and will begin production in July of 2023.

The most powerful electric motor from BMW.

An M-specific configuration of the drive system technology enables the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive’s rear-axle motor to achieve new levels of power density. The drive unit has a six-phase design with a dual inverter. This forms the basis for a substantial increase in output that remains consistent as speed builds, endowing the BMW i7 M70 xDrive with the power delivery characteristic of M models. The motor’s power density of 2.41 kW/kg represents an increase of 25.5% over the unit that drives the rear axle of the BMW i7 xDrive60, resulting in what is currently the company’s most powerful electric motor.

This new benchmark figure can be attributed to using six excitation windings in the motor’s stator instead of the customary three. The resulting “double excitation” compared with conventional units allows the electric motor to generate an extremely high output, despite its exceptionally light and compact design, and to maintain it continuously at higher vehicle speeds.

Developing maximum power with the M Sport Boost function and M Launch Control.

The motor powering the rear axle produces a peak output of 483 hp. Working in coordination with the 255 hp motor at the front axle, the resulting all-wheel-drive set-up generates a maximum system torque output of 749 lb-ft in Sport mode and as much as 811 lb-ft when M Launch Control or the M Sport Boost function is activated. The drive system therefore offers outstanding thrust, capable of launching the i7 M70 xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds on to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

With the M Launch Control function, both drive and traction control are integrated into the motor control unit. This ensures the power generated by the electric motors is instantly converted into stunning acceleration without any loss of traction.

The M Sport Boost function is activated with the shift paddle to the left of the steering wheel and is visualised by Performance-specific graphics in the instrument cluster. At the same time, the standard BMW IconicSounds Electric by Hans Zimmer provides a fitting acoustic accompaniment by switching to an exhilarating, M Performance-specific tone.  The soundtrack’s character varies according to the vehicle setting selected, with distinctly different sounds in My Mode Personal and Sport.

Extremely dynamic performance, excellent long-distance capabilities.

The highly dynamic performance of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is complimented by excellent long-distance capabilities. Credit here goes not just to the efficiency of the highly integrated drive units, but also a wealth of measures for reducing power consumption. These include adaptive recuperation of braking energy and the heat pump technology used in the integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin and powertrain.

Another factor contributing to optimized efficiency is the high-voltage battery’s impressive energy density. Located in the vehicle’s underbody, the battery provides 101.7 kWh of usable energy. This gives the BMW i7 M70 xDrive a preliminary estimated range of up to 474 km (estimated range of up to 474 km according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test procedure standards), making it eminently suitable for everyday use. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive is capable of AC charging at up to 9.6 kW, while DC power can be taken on board at a rate of up to 195 kW.

MAX RANGE operating mode.

The i7 M70 xDrive’s range can be moderated by activating a new drive system function; MAX RANGE. In this mode, drive power and top speed are carefully restricted and comfort functions scaled back, conserving battery power.

The MAX RANGE mode is primarily for critical situations where drivers are unable to recharge mid-journey where they had originally planned and must continue to an alternative charging point. To make the most of the available energy, the vehicle’s top speed is limited to 90 km/h, the climate control system is deactivated as are seat heating, seat ventilation, and steering wheel heating. A popup window appears in the control display indicating the recalculated range. The speed and power output gauges in the information display are also modified accordingly and the new energy conservation profile is taken into account in the range forecast.

The MAX Range mode can be selected using the control display’s touchscreen functionality, the iDrive Controller, or voice commands to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. It can also be deactivated by full-throttle acceleration (kickdown), engaging the M Sport Boost function, or switching the window defrost to maximum.

Powertrain and chassis technology in an M-specific application.

In addition to the extraordinary power of the drive system, chassis technology tuned precisely to deliver taut, confidence-inspiring handling contributes to a unique performance experience in the luxury segment.

The electric all-wheel drive, steering, dampers, and stability systems were all fine-tuned with the goal of producing exceptionally sporty handling for a model in this class without sacrificing high comfort over long distances. Helped by the almost silent drive system, passengers in the rear seats in particular enjoy sumptuous levels of comfort. On the other hand, when the road begins to twist and turn, the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive displays the blend of power, agility, and precision with which BMW M models are synonymous. The My Mode Sport activates powertrain and chassis settings geared to dynamic performance for an exhilarating driving experience. 

Standard on the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is an M-specific adaptive two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers and automatic self-levelling. M-specific air springs with reduced-volume hydraulics are also used to optimize damper response.

An additional shear panel between the bulkhead and spring strut towers produces a substantial increase in body rigidity at the front of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive. Also present are Integral Active 4-Wheel Steering and Active Roll Stabilization (part of Active Comfort Drive Pro). As well as helping to increase comfort, these two systems – together with the stiffer body – hone the vehicle’s handling dynamics.

The dark blue M Sport brakes with M logo fitted as standard come with large brake discs for increased stopping power. Brake calipers painted in black are available as part of the optional Dark Optics Package. The standard 21-inch M light-alloy wheels on the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive feature an exclusive, aerodynamically optimised design with a Jet Black burnished finish and matte black metal inserts. And for the first time on the i7, high performance tires (on 20-inch wheels) are offered as an option.

Sporting presence, luxurious elegance, stylish individuality.

The superior performance of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is reflected in its confident design. The imposing presence of the front gains additional visual impact with the contour lighting for the BMW kidney grille. On vehicles specified with the optional Dark Optics Package, the illuminated grille is fitted with a surround in high-gloss black for the first time.

M-specific design features along the flanks and at the rear of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive distinguish the performance variant of the i7. Sculpted M side skirts, M logos with embellished borders on the front side panels, black window surround, and black M exterior mirrors with the traditional twin-stalk design add sporting flourishes.

A model-specific rear apron with diffuser insert rounds off the vehicle's expressive appearance. Vehicles specified with the optional Dark Optics Package feature a black M rear spoiler, a black accent strip between the rear lights, and an inlay – also in black – for the rear apron. 

New variants of the BMW Individual two-tone paint finish. 

A vast selection of exterior paint shades is available for the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive, including variants reserved exclusively for BMW M models and striking matte-finish Frozen paint options. Owners can add an extra layer of visual impact with BMW Individual two-tone paintwork, which can now include BMW Individual special paintwork colours. Available from the launch of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive is the combination of Liquid Copper Metallic for the lower section of the body and Black Sapphire Metallic for the upper section. An exquisite, precisely drawn coach line separates the two colour zones like a delicate signature.

In addition, the range of exterior colours offers customers broader scope for personalization. For example, two-tone variants and over 100 BMW Individual special paintwork colours allow them to find a design that precisely matches their taste, bringing a very personal touch to the appearance of their BMW i7 M70 xDrive.

750e xDrive comes to Canada as fourth variant of the new 7 series. 

Rounding out the 7 series offering, the new 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid will be added to the portfolio as a 2024 model-year and will begin production in July of 2023. The 2024 BMW 750e xDrive will join its stablemates, the new i7 M70 xDrive, as well as the i7 xDrive60 and the 760i xDrive, which were both available from launch in late 2022.

In the new BMW 750e xDrive, the new electric drive system is linked to a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine, developing a rated output of 308 hp and rated torque of 332 lb-ft. Working in tandem, the two power sources produce system output of 483 hp (with temporary boost) and system torque of 516 lb-ft. This allows the new BMW 750e xDrive to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and from 80 – 120 km/h in only 2.7 seconds.

The drive system fitted in the plug-in hybrid model brings together a six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The power generated by the two drive units is channelled to the road via the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

The electric motor features the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid models. The synchronous motor with a specific power output of more than 5.0 kW/kg has a rated output of 194 hp and its rev band has been stretched to a maximum 11,500 rpm.

In addition, a pre-gearing stage is used to increase the torque produced by the electric motor at the transmission input on the engine side. This innovation, patented and used for the first time by BMW, enables the electric drive system integrated into the transmission housing in a compact, weight-saving design to generate drive torque available either on its own or in addition to the power developed by the combustion engine that could normally only be achieved using a far larger and heavier electric motor. The optimised power delivery achieved with the pre-gearing stage between the electric motor’s rotor and the transmission’s input shaft makes a clear difference both when accelerating off the line and putting in a quick burst of speed.

The electric motor for the plug-in hybrid models sources its energy from a lithium-ion high-voltage battery installed in the vehicle floor, which is likewise the product of fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. At 14.4 kWh, the battery’s usable energy content is more than 50 per cent higher than that available with the previous generation of the technology. Maximum AC charging power is 7.4 kW. 

Updated BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect.

The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is one of the brand’s first models to feature the updated version of the control/operation system BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect. In order to make selecting and operating numerous functions and digital services even more intuitive and comfortable, the latest generation of BMW iDrive offers a newly designed home screen and QuickSelect functionality. This brings an improved menu structure that takes its cues from consumer electronics devices. By showing the right information in the right place, the new BMW iDrive helps to deliver a focused, assured driving experience.

The BMW iDrive update also enables a broader offering of digital content for information and entertainment, shorter function update cycles, better information on charging points for electric vehicles, and improved access to a host of specific online services. BMW iDrive with QuickSelect along with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, focuses squarely on operation using the touchscreen and natural language.

BMW Operating System 8.5 will be introduced to all 2024 model-year 7 series and i7 variants as of July 2023 production and will be available via remote software update for all model-year 2023 7 series and i7 vehicles.

Functions are shown on a single level and can be activated using rapid-access tech.

The new home screen displays the navigation system’s map view or other individually configurable graphics at all times. On the same level, function icons appearing in a vertical arrangement on the driver’s side of the user interface can be selected with a swipe of the finger. QuickSelect allows the associated functions to be accessed directly and without having to pass through a submenu. And once the relevant settings have been chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at the lower edge of the display is all it takes to return to the home screen.

The new menu structure makes activating functions and settings much faster and simpler. The on-board digital content – just like the hardware, in the form of the BMW Curved Display – is designed to enhance the driver’s focus. BMW iDrive provides the right information in the right place and at the right time.

The emotionally engaging performance experience on board the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is further enhanced by M-design content in the BMW Curved Display. In key areas, the typeface and presentation of graphics reflect those in the cockpit of high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. The numbers in the speed read-out on the information display appear in a platinum/silver colour.

BMW Maps with new charging-optimised route guidance.

Other highlights of the new BMW iDrive include the extended functionality of the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. It now offers not only Augmented View on the information display behind the steering wheel, but also improved functions for even more precise charging-optimised route planning. This helps to make long journeys in the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive more relaxing as well as quicker and more efficient.

Added to which, the services and apps already introduced in the new BMW 7 Series are also available with BMW Operating System 8.5. For example, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and other voice-controlled assistants, BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, BMW Remote Software Upgrades, video streaming on the control display, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, and My Modes can also be used in the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive.

Munich . The heads of state and government from the world’s most important industrialised nations convened at Schloss Elmau in Upper Bavaria on 26 – 28 June 2022 for the latest G7 summit. The BMW Group provided a shuttle service for the event, which was initiated by the German government. As well as the latest series-production models, the fleet of shuttles also featured three examples of the brand new BMW i7 xDrive60 (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 19.6 – 18.4 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km; figures in NEDC cycle: – ), which was unveiled just a few weeks ago. The presence of the BMW i7 in the fleet gave the assembled dignitaries the opportunity to experience the immense driving comfort and futuristic ambience of the electrically powered sedan a full five months before its global launch gets underway. A high-security vehicle based on the new BMW 7 Series will be added to the line-up during the course of 2023. The BMW Group’s Protection Vehicles are tailored to individuals requiring special protection, and examples with an all-electric drive system will now be available for the first time.

Over more than 40 years, the BMW Group has amassed exceptional expertise and experience in the development and manufacture of vehicles designed specially for the specific requirements of authorities and public representatives. “We will continue this tradition in 2023 with a high-security vehicle combining the dynamic prowess, ride comfort and interior comfort of the new BMW 7 Series with an integrated protection concept that is unique in this segment,” says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “And we will also introduce an all-electric high-security vehicle for the first time – with no comprises when it comes to the standard of protection for our customers. It will be based on the BMW i7, demonstrating how sustainability and security can go hand in hand.”

The vehicle architecture of the new 7 Series range was devised from the outset for both internal combustion engines and electrified drive systems. The production development process for the luxury sedan already made allowance for the next-generation high-security vehicle’s new and innovative protection concept.

This integrated security concept, together with the “craft manufacturing” process at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, ensures that the electric variant of the new high-security vehicle also boasts an unrivalled combination of protection, poise & assurance, spaciousness and sustainability. “The new BMW i7 brings together a unique, all-electric driving experience with the most advanced package of technologies anywhere in the industry,” says Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Development. “So using this high-tech product as a platform for a top-class high-security vehicle seemed to us like the obvious thing to do.”

The BMW Group presented a concept vehicle demonstrating the compatibility of increased protection levels and sustainable mobility back at the IAA Mobility 2021 event. The BMW Concept iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6 was equipped with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system, making it the first ever concept for a high-security vehicle from a large-scale carmaker worldwide to offer zero tailpipe emissions and certified class VR6 protection.

The fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions, electric power consumption and operating range figures are determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable. They refer to vehicles in the German market. Where a range is shown, the figures take into account the impact of any optional extras.

All values were calculated based on the new WLTP test cycle. WLTP values are taken as the basis for determining vehicle-related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO₂ emissions as well as eligibility for any applicable vehicle-specific subsidies. Two models available at launch, including the first purely electric 7 Series.

The 760i xDrive combines the relentless power of the 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The new V8 borrows technology from BMW Motorsport, and features a new exhaust manifold, external oil cooling, and further developed turbocharging. The V8 gains 48V mild hybrid technology, and with the electric motor integrated into the new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission delivers the twin benefits of optimized response and power delivery under acceleration, and greater efficiency thanks to adaptive recuperation.

And for the very first time in its history, the 7 Series is now available fully electric. Featuring two highly efficient current-excited electric motors with a combined output of 536 horsepower and 549 lb-ft of instantaneous torque, the i7 xDrive60 will sprint from 0-100 km/h in about 4.7 seconds while returning an estimated range of up to 498 zero-emission kilometres in utter silence and profound luxury (estimated range of up to 300 miles according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test procedure standards).

Ever since the first generation made its debut in 1977, the BMW 7 Series has embodied the definition of highly exclusive individual mobility in its very distinct, very BMW way. A design exuding prestigious elegance has gone hand-in-hand with supreme interior comfort and the exhilarating driving experience for which the brand is celebrated. From the outset, this combination has delivered a level of dynamic handling without equal in the luxury sedan segment. And with each new generation, the 7 Series takes its outstanding driving qualities and the levels of comfort and well-being to new heights.

Now, 45 years on from the debut of the BMW 7 Series, the seventh generation takes the stage as the most advanced and innovative vehicle in the luxury segment. At the same time, the new edition captures the imagination with an overall design coherence unmatched by any rival. The BMW 7 Series is therefore once again a symbol of the BMW Group’s innovative strength.

Exterior design. A new dimension in presence, expressive power, and exclusivity.

The expressive design features created for the exterior of the new BMW 7 Series authentically reflect its place atop the BMW luxury class and the promise of an extraordinary on-board experience. The vertically prominent front end, with the combination of the optional illuminated BMW kidney grille presiding as its centrepiece and two-piece split headlight units, give the new 7 Series a powerful and distinctive presence. The front-end design, developed specifically for BMW’s flagship models, enables clear differentiation from the brand’s other models.

The brand’s hallmark twin circular headlights and BMW kidney grille have been newly interpreted. The light functions are now divided into two separate areas, with the upper elements acting as the more prominent focal point, especially when highlighted by optional Swarovski crystal details. This gives the front end of the new BMW 7 Series a progressive and memorable appearance. The low-beam and high-beam headlights are positioned in the dark lower units set deep into the front apron. These lights only become visible when switched on after dark. The new BMW 7 Series comes standard with Adaptive LED Headlights including cornering light and high beam assistant.

The slim strip of lights set high up in the front end brings together the daytime driving lights, side marker lights, and turn indicators. Their crisp graphic replicating a pair of upturned “L”s projects a technically sophisticated feel. The optional BMW Crystal Headlights create an all-new light effect that is both highly dramatic and completely functional. Crystals from Swarovski – again arranged in L-shapes and each backlit by 14 LED units – function as side marker lights and daytime driving lights. Whether the lights are switched on or off, the crystals reflect the available light in a multitude of facets. Even sunshine sparks a unique aesthetic in the crystal structure and brings the front end to life. At night, 22 LED units light up the crystals from behind and join with the kidney grille’s contour lighting to create an unmistakable light signature. Two LED elements below the crystals provide the striking daytime driving light signature, integrate the turn indicator and enhance the sparkle of the crystals in each function and colour.

The BMW Crystal Headlights also play a role in a visually expressive Welcome and Goodbye Scenario. When the customer approaches their car, first the illuminated surround of the BMW kidney grille is activated, followed by the enhanced sparkle of the BMW Crystal Headlights. Then the standard-fit dynamic light carpet is revealed. LED lights integrated into the door sills project four graphics, one after the other, onto the ground just outside the doors of the new BMW 7 Series. This welcome display continues in the interior as part of a neatly composed choreography that enhances the luxury-infused digital experience.

The clean surfacing of the front apron, with only a small number of contour lines, underscores the muscular and solid appearance of the new BMW 7 Series. The car’s width is also emphasized by the single-piece lower air intake and slim side intakes positioned at the outer edges of the front end. Another unique design cue for the new-generation car is the chiseled hood with a dynamic streak down its centreline.

Familiar proportions with maximized comfort in the rear seats.

The presence of the front end is complemented by a clear and monolithic surface design for the flanks of the new BMW 7 Series. The profile exudes sublime visual elegance. This impression is reinforced by the virtually flush-fitted side windows with invisible seals. A shoulderline running from the daytime driving lights into the rear lights subdivides the taut bodywork. The long hood, a second character line above the side skirts rising slightly towards the rear, and the powerfully sculpted surfaces below the flush door handles convey an understated sense of dynamism.

The side window surround is bordered towards the C-pillar by an elegant chrome element, which stays in place as part of the body when the rear door is opened. This creates a new interpretation of the Hofmeister kink counter-swing. The long doors provide ease of entry and exit for the rear passengers, while the broad C-pillars and a pattern graphic on the rear section of the side windows protect their privacy from prying eyes.

The exterior measurements of the new BMW 7 Series have expanded in a discreet and harmonious way, so it retains the familiar proportions of the outgoing model. Those dimensions are more closely aligned with the long-wheelbase version of the previous-generation car, showing a three per cent increase in its length, height, and wheel diameter respectively.

The new BMW 7 Series has grown by 124 mm in length to 5319 mm, by 48 mm in width to 1951 mm, and by 65 mm in height to 1544 mm. Its wheelbase is now 5 mm longer at 3215 mm, which also helps bring about a further improvement in seating comfort in the rear. The headroom in the interior of the new BMW 7 Series has also been noticeably improved. The luggage capacity of the conventionally powered model variants is 540 litres, 25 more than the predecessor model. The i7 provides 501 litres of luggage space.

Eye-catching design at the rear with precise contours.

Like the front end of the new BMW 7 Series, the rear is also shaped by a clearly divided surface design. Here, too, horizontal lines accentuate the car’s width. Embedding the license plate mount in the lower section of the rear apron creates vibrant light and shadow effects.

The slim LED rear light units exude pure elegance and extend well into the car’s flanks. This progression into the side surfaces is accentuated by a discreet patterning in the glass lenses. The “L” shape familiar from other BMW models is formed by an integrated chrome strip and the rear light bars positioned below it. The brake lights and turn indicator lights are generated by two slim strips below the main rear lights.

Bold exterior colours, exclusive BMW Individual two-tone paint finish.

One non-metallic and ten metallic exterior colours can be ordered for the new BMW 760i xDrive. The new i7 xDrive60 offers three additional metallic shades: Dark Graphite Metallic, Sparkling Copper Grey Metallic, and Space Silver Metallic. A new addition to the spectrum of colours for series-produced cars is the first-ever BMW Individual two-tone paint finish, which gives the luxury sedan a strikingly exclusive appearance. Two colours are offered for the section of the body above the shoulderline, while five shades are available for the lower section. An exquisite, precisely drawn coach line separates the two colour zones from one another like a delicate signature.

Interior design. Exceptional travelling comfort in a rejuvenating setting.

Luxury at its most progressive awaits the driver and passengers inside the new BMW 7 Series. A select choice of materials, precision craftsmanship of the highest order and a clearly structured, minimalist interior design underpin the exclusive on-board experience for both the driver and passengers. Here, generous amounts of space meet innovative equipment features and the clever interplay of high-tech control/operation, connectivity, driver assistance, infotainment, and digitalization solutions.

And then there is the artfully stylish selection of materials, which capture the imagination in terms of both looks and tactile appeal. A new optional feature is the use of exquisite cashmere for a portion of the seat surfaces. The soft and pleasantly warm feel of this sumptuously refined natural material comes together with the available glass applications for selected controls, the optional open-pore fine wood of the interior trim strip, and the stainless-steel speaker covers to create a luxurious sense of wellbeing.

Progressive cockpit design with BMW Curved Display and BMW Interaction Bar.

The brand-typical driver-focused cockpit design in the new BMW 7 Series has been re-interpreted in a progressive style. Digitalization enables the number of buttons, switches, and controls in the cockpit to be significantly reduced. Standard specification includes an interior trim strip for the instrument panel in Mirror Oak High Gloss on the 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60. They provide an elegant stage for the BMW Curved Display. The fully digital screen grouping consists of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch control display screen. Arranged beneath a shared glass surface, the displays are directed ergonomically towards the driver, making the already intuitive touch control even more straightforward.

The BMW Curved Display’s state-of-the-art graphics and the operating system’s menu structure have been designed with a smartphone-style appearance. The user interface impresses with its striking forms, dynamic light effects, strong depth of colour and modern colour palettes that change depending on the selected My Mode. The graphical layout of the information display and the content shown in the centre of the display can both be adapted to suit the situation and requirements. The clearly structured arrangement of widgets on the control display’s home screen provides a simple overview of the menu options and can be configured by the driver, as desired. Frequently used functions can be added to a favourites bar.

The BMW Interaction Bar debuts in the new 7 Series as a new breed of control/operation and design element. This functional unit, which boasts a crystalline surface structure with dramatic backlighting, extends from below the trim strip across the full width of the instrument panel and well into the door panel trim. It houses touch-sensitive control panels for adjusting the ventilation and climate control, activating the hazard warning lights and opening the glove compartment. The light design of the BMW Interaction Bar takes its cues from the colour world of the My Mode setting selected or can be set as desired by the user.

The BMW Interaction Bar brings a whole new dimension to the interaction between the driver and vehicle. It combines function control, ambient lighting, and the ability to adjust its decorative appearance as desired into one fully integrated component. Entry into and exit from the vehicle are accompanied by a welcome/goodbye production incorporating lights on the BMW Interaction Bar. From the ambient lighting menu, the driver can decide which events the BMW Interaction Bar reacts to with dynamic light animations, e.g., incoming phone calls. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can also appear on the BMW Interaction Bar in an artistic glow.

New design for the steering wheel and gear selector.

The newly designed steering wheel also plays its part in the exclusive driving experience. It has two spokes and a flat-bottomed rim. Its control panels contain rocker switches and scroll wheels as well as buttons offering haptic feedback when pressed. In vehicles specified with the M Sport package, with is standard equipment on the 760i xDrive, drivers are presented with a classical three-spoke, flat-bottom design.

An exquisitely designed centre console control panel hosts the iDrive Controller, Start/Stop button, volume control for the audio system and buttons to control vehicle functions. Also positioned here are the My Modes buttons, which replace the Driving Experience Control switch, and the newly designed gear selector.

Discreet backlighting brings greater visual emphasis to the control panel. Exclusive glass applications for selected controls are equipped in the Premium Package. This stylistically appealing design feature is applied to the gear selector, the iDrive Controller, the Start/Stop button, the volume control for the audio system on the centre console and the seat adjustment controls integrated into the doors.

Interior surfaces and door trim imbued with modern elegance.

The clear structure of the instrument panel continues into the design of the door trim. This creates a harmonious coordination of the surfaces around the seats. The line of the BMW Interaction Bar progresses into the front door trim. From the control panel integrated here, users can activate the seat heating and store their preferred seat position. High-quality accents also come in the form of perforated metal covers for the speakers integrated into the doors and the subtly backlit storage compartments.

A digital control unit is integrated into the trim of each rear door. This 5.5-inch colour display with touchscreen functionality allows passengers to select their choice of entertainment program, the image display, and the volume when using the BMW Theater Screen in vehicles so equipped. The touchscreens also control adjustment of the audio system, climate control functions, seat adjustment settings, ambient lighting, and rear sunshades.

New multifunction seats as standard and Executive Lounge available as option.

Newly developed multi-contour seats are standard in the new BMW 7 Series. They offer wider seat surfaces than the outgoing model, as well as extensive electric adjustment, seat heating and lumbar support for the driver and front passenger. The driver and passengers can select their desired seat position using the controls on the door panels or by touch on the control display via the relevant menu in the iDrive system. Active front seat ventilation with optimized cooling is standard on 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60 and a massage function with nine programs and a noticeably increased vitalizing and relaxation effect is optional. The backs of the head restraints have stylish decorative wood trim with electroplated accent strips.

Multifunction rear seats are standard on the i7 xDrive60, optional on the other models, while active seat ventilation and a massage function for the rear seats may be specified on every new 7 Series. Here, the seats are adjusted from the digital touch-control panels integrated into the door trim. The padded side sections of the backrests ease entry into and exit from the vehicle. The standard speakers in the outer head restraints provide particularly intense listening pleasure. In the multifunction seats, the audio experience is further enhanced by bass shakers in the backrests in vehicles equipped with the optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system.

First-class appointments in the second row.

The Executive Lounge package brings unmatched seating comfort to the rear compartment. It includes a reclining function with integrated leg rest for the space behind the front passenger seat, plus an optionally quilted and heated armrest with high-quality glass insert and integrated smartphone tray for inductive charging. Coordinated adjustment of the backrest angle and backrest upper section angle, forward/back position and seat surface tilt enables an extremely comfortable reclining position. The backrest can be reclined up to 42.5°, which sets the benchmark in the segment. Individually adjustable neck cushions and significantly increased headroom compared with the outgoing model also enhance travelling comfort.

Also unique is the design principle for the leg rest, which allows passengers to perfect the relaxed resting position. Here, the calf support, extending from seamlessly from the seat surface, is paired with a heel rest extending out from the back of the front passenger seat. To create the ideal seating position and legroom for the rear passenger, the front passenger seat can be moved fully forward, and its backrest tilted forward to the greatest possible degree. In addition, the front passenger seat also offers the multifunction seat’s full selection of comfort-enhancing features and adjustment range.

Carefully coordinated interior appointments.

Customers looking to bring a personal touch to the interior design of their new 7 Series can choose from the host of equipment variants and colour combinations included in a newly structured offering. This approach sees the elements of the interior matched and blended with one another to stylish effect. The 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60 feature elegant extended Merino leather as standard equipment, available in a choice of six colours. Full Merino leather is optional on all 7 Series models.

The optional BMW Individual Interior with Exclusive Contents takes the feeling of wellbeing on board the new BMW 7 Series to another level. This specification adds the BMW Individual Alcantara headliner in a colour coordinated to the specified BMW Merino Leather with Exclusive Contents, which is available in Amarone, Smoke White, Mocha, Black or Tartufo. Clients may also choose from three open pore wood trims, Mirror Oak High Gloss trim, Fineline Black trim with a metallic inlay, or a dazzling combination of carbon fibre with silver thread inlay complimented by piano black accents.

New from BMW Individual: seat surfaces in leather and cashmere.

The BMW Individual Interior with Exclusive Contents generates an exclusive yet warm and inviting atmosphere inside the new BMW 7 Series – especially when BMW Individual Merino leather/cashmere wool in the Smoke White/Light Grey combination is specified. The highly exclusive wool/textile surfaces bring a whole new tactile quality to the interior and combine sustainability with luxury.

The light-coloured leather in the upper section of the seats and the darker cashmere-rich cloth in the lower section, elaborate quilting and fine perforation create a unique impression – both visually and tactilely. Their intricate, symmetrically embroidered pattern makes these seats a particularly attractive feature of the interior. The colour contrast between the leather and cashmere surfaces creates a horizontal band that wraps around the interior and envelopes the passengers.

Four-zone automatic climate control fitted as standard, radiant heating available.

Standard equipment for the new BMW 7 Series includes four-zone automatic climate control with further developed control logic. In place of conventional air vents, the instrument panel incorporates slot-type outlets arranged along the full width of the BMW Interaction Bar. This also contributes to the clear, minimalist style of the cockpit design in the new BMW 7 Series. It is now also possible to adjust the temperature in the front footwells separately. Meanwhile, a standard nanoparticle filter removes virus-sized particles and allergens from the air inside the cabin. The BMW i7 comes with a model-specific climate control unit featuring extremely efficient heat pump technology.

Like the driver and front passenger, those in the second row of seats can also set the temperature in their area of the car to their personal preferences thanks to separate controls in the rear compartment. An additional solar sensor optimizes temperature adjustment in the rear. The climate control unit also uses the seat heating and, if fitted, the seat ventilation function to match the interior temperature to the specifications of those on board.

Customers can adjust the overall temperature in their car more accurately with the Heat Comfort Package, Front and Rear, which is included as part of the Premium Package. This includes steering wheel heating and panel heating for the armrests in the door trim and centre console. In cold outside temperatures, the panel heating allows a pleasant on-board climate to be achieved much more quickly than when using warm air alone.

Panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof with new light effects.

The Panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof is standard on the new BMW 7 Series. The roof now consists of a single fixed glass surface framed by a steel surround. The roof’s transparent surface is much larger than on the outgoing 7 Series in its rear section, creating a light-filled ambience in the rear compartment as well. The sliding shade for the panoramic glass sunroof is electrically operated.

The Panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof delights with a newly designed light show using light threads backlit by LEDs. The structure this creates replicates the pattern of the quilting on the seat surfaces. The colour palette of the light effects, which are also part of the Welcome Scenario, either compliments the chosen My Mode or can be selected independently.

Unmatched in-car entertainment with BMW Theater Screen and Amazon Fire TV.

One of the highlights of the options available for the new BMW 7 Series is the BMW Theater Screen with built-in Amazon Fire TV. This system includes a 31.3-inch 8K touchscreen display, built-in touch screen remotes in the door panels (BMW Touch Command), and an automated rear shade system that closes when the BMW Theater Screen is turned on. The system can be paired with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system with optional in-seat bass drivers for a further enhanced experience.

The BMW Theater Screen with Amazon Fire TV lets passengers enjoy content in up to 4K/UHD resolution from popular apps (subscriptions may be required). Stream videos, play games, listen to music, get information, and watch downloaded programs – all while on the road. 

Amazon Fire TV brings together the content customers value most in one place by combining popular streaming originals, live sports, and news into a single experience that they can search, browse, and filter. Customers can also enjoy personalized streaming using Profiles, with recommendations, viewing history, and watch lists. Profiles also allow rear seat passengers to start a film or TV show at home and pick up where they left off once on the road.

An authentic cinematic experience.

Rear seat passengers can watch films and TV shows in 16:9, 21:9, or 32:9 cinemascope aspect ratio for an immersive experience (may crop content when zoomed). The screen folds into the roof when not in use, and can be moved closer or further from the viewers to put it within arm’s reach for touch controls or to put it at the preferred viewing distance.

Audio is enjoyed either through the vehicle’s Bowers & Wilkins (both standard and optional) speakers or by connecting up to two Bluetooth headphones with independent volume controls.

The BMW Theater Screen is revealed to the accompaniment of a sound composition created exclusively for this purpose as part of the collaboration between the BMW Group and renowned film score composer and Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer. At the same time, the sunshades for the side windows, rear window and panoramic glass sunroof are closed and the ambient lighting in the rear compartment is dimmed. The sequence unfolds to a choreography developed with a sharp eye for detail and which brings all the functions and digital content together into an all-encompassing user experience. The BMW Theater Screen spreads out horizontally across virtually the full width of the interior and extends down from the headliner to the front seat backrests.

Unique sound experience with 4D audio system and BMW Iconic Sounds Electric.

The standard Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound audio system in the new BMW 7 Series delivers a superlative sound experience, with a seven-band equalizer, up to 18 speakers with intricately precision-etched metal grilles, and 655 watts of crystal-clear power.

The optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System adds an extremely high-quality and multi-faceted sound experience to the theater environment in the rear of the new BMW 7 Series. It sets new standards in its segment not only with up to 36 speakers, of which four are integrated into the headliner, and amplifier output of 1,965 watts, but also in terms of sound quality. The fully active audio system with seven-band equalizer offers microphone-assisted sound control based on dynamic performance and four sound modes. Two surround speakers are integrated into the head restraints of both the front seats and outer rear seats. The new Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System also has a 4D audio function generated using exciters in the front and rear seat backrests. Their precise, magnetically controlled vibrations result in improved perception of bass frequencies, even at low volumes. The Audio Demo Mode, included here for the first time, allows the customer to call up a video – around a minute in length – from the iDrive menu which explains the extraordinary sound potential of the audio system and the functions and adjustment settings available to deliver a captivating sound experience.

Whatever the entertainment being enjoyed, BMW i7 customers will be greeted by another unmistakable sound experience in the form of BMW Iconic Sounds Electric. Pressing the Start/Stop button sparks an inspiring acoustic accompaniment that builds anticipation for the all-electric driving experience to come. This distinctive sound production is again the result of the collaboration between the BMW Group and Hans Zimmer. If desired, a drive sound developing a strikingly transparent timbre with spherical components delivers authentic feedback to every movement of the accelerator. The character of the sound alters according to the vehicle setting chosen with the My Modes button. This means that in SPORT mode the car’s aural spectrum is more dominant and powerful.

Automatic doors bring a sense of occasion to any journey.

Another comfort-enhancing feature of the new BMW 7 Series is the optional automatic doors. To open or close the front and rear doors, passengers simply touch the handles set flush into the body or the buttons in the BMW Interaction Bar at the front of the cabin or the rear door trim. The opening and closing sequence can also be activated using the key fob.

New technology includes a helpful Safe Exit function. Utilizing the data from 12 ultrasound sensors on either side of the vehicle, occupants are warned when an approaching pedestrian, cyclist, or vehicle would be endangered if a door were opened. Visual and audible cues alert the occupants and the door will not open until the hazard has passed. An integral servo mode allows the doors to be opened and closed manually with minimal effort.  

Drive system and charging technology. Flexible choice, unwavering efficiency.

The models in the new BMW 7 Series range are based on a flexible vehicle architecture that has been devised for three different drive types from the outset. This has made it possible to equip the luxury sedans not just with the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines – all of which now come with the latest 48V mild hybrid technology – but also plug-in hybrid systems and even an all-electric powertrain. Despite these differences, all model variants are manufactured on a single assembly line at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. As a result, purely electric mobility now also plays a key role at the very top of the BMW luxury class. No model captures the range’s forward-looking premium character with its strong emphasis on sustainability better than the new BMW i7.

BMW i7: pure luxury and dynamic performance with zero emissions.

An emotional driving experience, passenger comfort and a luxurious ambience without compromise – and with zero local emissions: the BMW i7 xDrive60 has it all. Its fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprises highly integrated drive units at the front and rear axles that bring together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single, very compact housing, plus the accompanying charging technology and high-voltage battery.

Control of the adaptive recuperation function has been further refined in the BMW i7 to increase range. The efficiency with which the BMW i7 receives charging and the durability of its high-voltage battery both benefit from the latest advances in the field of charging technology. Compared with the BMW iX and BMW i4 models, the charging software has undergone further improvement, the temperature of the high-voltage battery is controlled more precisely and there is also an innovative facility for saving charging profiles. In addition to this, the BMW Maps navigation system displays the charging-optimized route even faster and in even greater detail in the BMW i7.

Electric motors with no rare earth materials.

The electric motors work according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor, where it is a precisely controllable electrical feed that sets the rotor in motion rather than fixed permanent magnets. This design precludes the need for rare earth metals altogether in the manufacture of the rotor. 

The virtually silent power delivery of the BMW i7 xDrive60, and the luxurious sense of driving comfort this instils, are further helped by improvements to the electric drive units’ acoustics, a model-specific mounting concept and newly developed noise encapsulation for the electric motors. The motor driving the rear wheels generates peak output of 308 hp, while the unit at the front axle produces 255 hp. The drive units combine to deliver a maximum output of 536 hp and overall torque of 549 lb-ft. All of which enables the new BMW i7 xDrive60 to surge from 0 -100 km/h in an estimated 4.7 seconds. The top speed of the new BMW i7 xDrive60 is electronically limited to 240 km/h.

The experience when accelerating is defined not just by the car’s electrifying, instantaneous power delivery, but also by its supreme traction and directional stability. Underpinning the dynamic prowess of the BMW i7 xDrive60 are its electric all-wheel drive and its precisely tuned driving stability systems headlined by the near-actuator wheel slip limitation. The fully variable drive system is intelligently connected with the system of powertrain and chassis control functions, whose extremely quick and precise responses help to sustain thrilling forward momentum even in adverse road and weather conditions.

Innovation: adaptive recuperation of an even higher standard.

The adaptive recuperation feature familiar from the BMW iX and BMW i4 models has been further honed for the BMW i7 and is now also able to take downhill sections and information from the traffic light recognition function into account. Adaptive recuperation generally allows the intensity of brake energy regeneration during deceleration and braking to be automatically optimized for the road situation, as detected using data from the navigation system and the driver assistance systems’ sensors. When approaching an intersection, for example, the level of recuperation can be increased – even if route guidance isn’t activated – thereby feeding energy back into the high-voltage battery while harnessing the deceleration effect at the same time. On the open road, meanwhile, the coasting function can take over, allowing the car to “freewheel” with no drive power whenever the driver eases off the accelerator. Energy is no longer supplied to the two electric motors in this state, meaning no battery power is consumed.

Adaptive recuperation is the default setting in driving position D. Alternatively, the driver can choose a high, medium, or low brake energy regeneration setting for all driving situations in the BMW iDrive menu. The highest recuperation setting is automatically activated in driving position B, which also produces the characteristic one-pedal feeling. 

Information on the energy flow can be viewed in the control display no matter which driving position is selected. The range horizon clearly illustrates the impact of driving style on the high-voltage battery’s charge level.

Innovation: more rounded charging curve thanks to new charging process.

The charging software from the BMW i4 and BMW iX models has been further refined for the new BMW i7. Once the high-voltage battery reaches a higher charge level, the new charging process aims to ensure the charging rate drops smoothly instead of following the previous “stepped” curve. This produces a more rounded charging curve overall, resulting in shorter charging times. Following an initial, temperature-dependent phase of constant power supply, the new process now also controls charging based on a continuous nominal voltage curve that makes allowance for the variables of temperature, recharged capacity, and charge level at start of charging.

Innovation: automated charging profile settings.

For the first time, the BMW i7 makes it possible to store customized charging settings for multiple individual charging points. These settings will then be automatically restored the next time the car returns to a memorized charging point. In addition to this, preheating of the high-voltage battery can also now be started manually in the BMW i7 when approaching a high-power charging station without the navigation system’s route guidance function activated.

Besides the improved charging software on board the new BMW i7, the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system also helps to further enhance its performance on long journeys. For instance, a charging-optimized route is calculated as soon as the destination has been entered if the vehicle’s current range is not enough to reach the destination. Further improvements have been made to both the calculation algorithm used here and the speed of calculation for charging-optimized routes.

Innovation: improved temperature control for long high-voltage battery life.

An optimized cooling strategy while DC charging is in progress further improves the durability of the high-voltage battery. Alternating phases of full and partial cooling power are used during fast charging of the BMW i7 to avoid excessive cooling of the battery. This prevents cell temperatures from dropping too low in the process, particularly at higher charge levels, thereby opening up potential for short charging times and reduced ageing of the high-voltage battery’s cells.

Innovation: BMW Maps navigation system with improved functions for charging-optimized route planning.

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system boasts even better performance, enhanced accuracy and more intuitive destination entry in the new BMW 7 Series. Forming part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus, the new-generation BMW Maps system enables very fast and dynamic route calculation based on precise real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals combined with forecasting models.

As soon as the destination has been entered in the BMW i7, a charging-optimized route will be calculated if the vehicle’s current range is not enough to reach the destination. Further improvements have been made to both the calculation algorithm and the speed of calculation for charging-optimized routes. Important additional information about the charging stops has been added in the route summary, such as the estimated charge level upon arrival, the recommended charging time, and the target charge level for the onward journey. Live data is processed during the journey, allowing new charging stations to be automatically added to the itinerary if any of the stations originally planned for charging stops no longer have any availability. The driver is also now offered alternative charging-optimized routes, where available. By default, the system is set to ensure that the vehicle reaches both the final destination and the charging stops with a charge level of at least 10 percent. Drivers are now able to adjust this spare charge setting if required.

Go the distance in purely electric performance and comfort

The outstanding efficiency of the current BMW eDrive technology results in an anticipated EPA range of up to 498 kilometres for the i7 xDrive60 (estimated range according to preliminary BMW AG tests based on the EPA’s test procedure standards). A broad selection of standard and optional wheel and tire combinations, whose efficiency has been optimized across the range of available sizes, gives customers plenty of scope when designing their vehicle with only a limited impact on range.

The car’s impressive long-distance credentials are also down to the high-voltage battery’s excellent energy density. The extremely slim, high-voltage battery with a cell height of just 109 mm is located low down in the vehicle floor and provides 101.7 kWh of usable energy. The heat pump technology used in the integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin and drive system also helps boost efficiency, as does the adaptive or individually adjustable recuperation feature. The high-voltage battery is heated using a dedicated 5.5 kW electric flow heater.

The Combined Charging Unit in the BMW i7 xDrive60 allows AC charging at a rate of up to 11 kW, while DC power can be taken on board at a rate of up to 195 kW. This means the range can be extended by as much as 128 kilometres in just ten minutes during a mid-journey stop at a DC Fast Charging station.

Enhanced efficiency across all variants: combustion engine benefits from new 48V mild hybrid technology.

Besides the locally emission-free driving offered by the new BMW i7, the remaining powertrain variant for the brand’s new flagship model is also shining example of efficiency through electrification. The engine available for the new BMW 7 Series is a member of a new modular generation of the BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engine family and will be equipped with 48V mild hybrid technology worldwide.

Playing a key role here is the world premiere of the new 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, which is standard in all combustion-engine model variants and is unique in this segment. Now installed in a compact housing as part of a 48V mild hybrid system is an electric motor, complete with the necessary power electronics, which acts as a crankshaft-mounted starter generator and helps the combustion engine to deliver a smooth, dynamic, and, at the same time, efficient drive. The mild hybrid system generates torque of 147 lb-ft and an output boost of up to 12 hp, depending on the driving situation. This additional drive torque translates into remarkably instantaneous response to the slightest movement of the accelerator, both when pulling away and when putting in a sudden burst of speed.

The energy required for providing the electric power boost is stored in a 48V battery located under the luggage compartment. It is charged via recuperation in overrun and braking phases. This provides an efficient means of recuperating braking energy that went unused in the past. Besides supplying the electric motor, the 48V battery also feeds power to the vehicle’s 12V electrical system via a voltage transformer.

BMW 760i xDrive: new eight-cylinder unit technological highlights.

Under the hood of the new BMW 760i xDrive is a 4.4-liter V8 engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, channeling its power to the road through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The new V8 boasts a number of technological highlights that are designed to enhance both its sporty power delivery and its efficiency. It utilizes the thermodynamic benefits of a cross-bank exhaust manifold and external engine oil cooling. In addition, a reinforced crankshaft drive, further developed turbocharging with a blow-off valve, a new oil pump and a weight-minimized oil sump all play their part in increasing the engine’s efficiency.

The controlled intervention of the electric motor also noticeably increases comfort levels when the Auto Start Stop function cuts in and in idling and coasting situations. The coasting function with deactivated combustion engine comes into play in the My Mode Efficient.

With an increased output of 536 hp and peak torque of 553 lb-ft, the eight-cylinder engine propels the new BMW 760i xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h in an estimated 4.2 seconds.

Chassis technology and driving experience. The perfect blend of sporting prowess and driving comfort.

The chassis technology for the new BMW 7 Series range has been engineered and tuned to make allowance for both varying customer preferences and the increased diversity of the powertrain portfolio. Wheel suspension, the spring and damping systems, the steering, and the braking system are all designed to ensure the latest generation of the BMW 7 Series delivers the blend of dynamic performance and ride comfort for which it is renowned. Intensive testing and the integrated application of all powertrain and chassis systems have ensured all model variants are able to produce a spectrum of handling qualities unrivalled in this segment. As a result, they are equally adept at delivering a high-performance driving experience behind the wheel and outstanding passenger comfort. 

The increased body rigidity, larger wheels and wider tires of the new BMW 7 Series combine with its wider tracks of 1666 mm at the front (an increase of 48 mm) and 1648 mm at the rear (an increase of 4 mm) to provide remarkable agility, precise steering, and high lateral acceleration. The sedan’s double-wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension have also undergone an extensive upgrade. An elastic steering gear mounting has been fitted on the front axle subframe to improve acoustic properties. This is supplemented by a model-specific motor mount on the BMW i7. In all-wheel-drive models, an aluminum shear panel now increases torsional rigidity at the front end. The new hydro mounts for the rear axle subframe (bi-directional on the BMW i7) are another factor contributing to the vehicle’s enhanced ride comfort.

Adaptive two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers as standard.

All model variants in the new BMW 7 Series range are fitted with a standard adaptive two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling as well as adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers. The suspension’s air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, making it possible to balance out an unevenly loaded car. This enables the adaptive two-axle air suspension to constantly maintain the optimum ride height at all speeds, resulting in comfortable, assured handling.

The system also allows the ride height to be adjusted to suit the driving situation. The height automatically drops by 10 mm in Sport Mode, while in all other My Modes the body is lowered in the same way once the speed passes 140 km/h or, in the BMW i7, 120 km/h. The body can also be raised by 0.8 inches at the touch of a button on rough roads, for example, or on steeply angled ramps at garage entrances. A larger pressure reservoir and a new mounting for the air compressor serve to improve the system’s working acoustics compared with the previous model generation.

The dampers are controlled electronically for each individual wheel, endowing the new BMW 7 Series with sharper handling abilities. New rod end bearings for the rear dampers bring a significant improvement in ride quality over small bumps and ridges in the road. The dampers respond adaptively both to road surface conditions and to driving style, with their compression and rebound stages adjusting smoothly and independently of one another. The basic damper setting also varies depending on the selected My Mode. Sport Mode activates optimal damper responses for dynamic handling, creating a noticeable contrast to the more comfort-oriented damper setting in all other My Modes.

Integral Active Steering gives the 7 Series greater poise and makes maneuvering easier.

The new BMW 7 Series is fitted with a new version of the Electric Power Steering system. The steering ratio now varies with the steering angle, and the system includes Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance. The various My Modes again offer a choice of two settings for either very sporty or more comfort-oriented steering response.

The standard Integral Active 4-Wheel Steering makes even lighter work of maneuvering, increases agility at moderate speeds and enhances poise and assurance when changing lanes and cornering at high speeds. To this end, the rear wheels are turned in either the same or the opposite direction to the front wheels – depending on road speed – by up to 3.5°.

Steering the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front wheels at low speeds enables easy maneuvering by reducing the 7 Series’ turning circle by about 0.76 m.

Active roll stabilization and comfort drive with road preview.

The optional Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview for both the 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60 offers customers another way of maximizing not just the ride comfort of the new BMW 7 Series but also its agility and steering precision. It includes an active roll stabilization feature, which employs electric swivel motors to smooth out – exceptionally quickly and precisely – the lateral forces inducing body roll through dynamically taken corners. The latest version of the system uses a 48V electric motor for this purpose.

Active roll stabilization improves agility, directional accuracy, and handling precision, and enables highly dynamic steering response thanks to its ability to stabilize body roll more effectively. As a result, the driver enjoys extremely precise reactions from the steering and particularly fleet-footed performance. The potential for lateral acceleration and dynamic handling is also increased due to the optimum distribution of roll moment as a function of the driving state and the resulting balance between the contact forces at the front and rear wheels. 

The active roll stabilization also increases comfort when driving in a straight line by decoupling the fixed connection between each axle’s wheels provided by a conventional anti-roll bar. As a result, suppression of body vibrations is also improved when driving straight ahead or at low levels of lateral acceleration: since the adaptive two-axle air suspension with self-levelling function maintains the full range of spring travel even when the vehicle is heavily laden, the addition of active roll stabilization makes it possible to activate a softer air spring setting and increase ride comfort. The amount of body roll caused by surface imperfections on one side of the vehicle is reduced thanks to the decoupled anti-roll bars. This has the effect of lessening the lateral acceleration forces and the obtrusive “head toss” they can cause.

Comfort drive with road preview in the BMW 7 Series goes further still by factoring in additional information from the navigation system, driving style analysis, and camera-based anticipation data to maximize both dynamic response and ride comfort.

Extremely quick and precise: near-actuator wheel slip limitation. The new BMW 7 Series also now comes with near-actuator wheel slip limitation to maximize the car’s agility and poise in challenging driving situations. This traction control system is integrated into the engine management system, eliminating the long signal paths to the DSC control unit. This allows corrective inputs to be applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems and with exceptional precision.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation ensures optimum traction, even on slippery roads, and superb directional stability. Because this function reacts almost instantly to any loss of traction, especially when accelerating hard or taking corners at speed, the DSC system has to intervene far less frequently to maintain composed and assured handling with selective applications of the brakes at individual wheels.

Exclusive dynamism: M Sport and M Sport Shadowline packages.

The seventh generation of the BMW 7 Series again elevates itself above its rivals with a sporting appeal rooted deeply in the brand’s history. All the model variants stand out with their impressive agility and handling, and these qualities are further heightened by the M Sport package, which is now standard on 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60. M-specific design features for the exterior and interior highlight the dynamic side of the 7’s character. 

The M Sport Package adds M-specific geometry to the front apron including a three-section lower air intake. The side intakes, like the low-beam and high-beam headlights, are set deep into the front apron, which ensures the visual focus is squarely on the daytime driving light units and the BMW kidney grille. The indented sweep running down the centre of the hood extends into the upper section of the bumper and frames the BMW roundel. The side skirts and rear apron also have an M-specific design.

Other features designed to enhance the sense of sportiness are 20 or 21-inch M Aerodynamic wheels on mixed high-performance or all-season tires, High-Gloss Black Window Surround, a three-spoke, flat-bottomed M Steering wheel, and illuminated door sill plates bearing the M logo.

The M Sport Shadowline Package can be specified for the 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60. M Sport Professional adds M Sport Brakes with calipers painted either black or blue, a discreet rear spoiler painted in Black Sapphire Metallic, and a black kidney grille (deleting the grille’s illumination).

A range of wheel and tire options, and a sophisticated tire condition monitor.

The 760i xDrive and i7 xDrive60 are fitted with 20-inch M Aerodynamic bi-colour wheels on all-season non-runflat tires as standard. 21-inch wheels on performance non-runflat tires are optional.

The i7 xDrive60 can be equipped with unique 19 or 20-inch wheels, differing itself from the 760i xDrive, when equipped with the Design Pure Excellence line, a no-cost option that replaces the M Sport Package. The performance tires for the 20 and 21-inch light-alloy wheels have foam absorbers inside them for sound insulation, further increasing acoustic comfort in the cabin.

As well as its tire pressure indicator for each individual wheel, the new BMW 7 Series also features a standard digital tire condition monitoring system. Unique in this segment, this function uses a cloud-based algorithm to detect pressure loss far sooner than the vehicle’s Tire Pressure Monitor can. The driver is notified of any pressure loss together with the recommended course of action via the My BMW App. Statistical information and AI methods can also be employed to predict wear performance for the vehicle’s tires and thereby forecast the when the recommended minimum tread depth will be reached. The digital tire diagnosis function can be set to automatically inform the customer of any tire-related technical issue requiring action.

Driver assistance systems. Intelligent assistance for automated driving and parking.

The new 7 Series also marks the cutting edge of technological development at BMW when it comes to driving and parking assistance systems. Its innovative technology suite featuring the latest generation of cameras and ultrasonic and radar sensors, a new software stack, a powerful computing platform and a 5G connection to the BMW Cloud lays the foundation for both the outstanding functionality of all current systems and the implementation of future driving assistance functions.

BMW runs one of Europe’s most sophisticated computing centres to help with the development of driver assistance functions. Highly advanced software algorithms are employed for analyzing data and creating an environment model, as well as for visualization and control functions. 8-megapixel automotive cameras with leading-edge technology from Mobileye are being fitted for the first time anywhere in the world, making it possible to reduce the number of front cameras while still doubling the amount of measurement points. Existing functions can be improved or expanded through Remote Software Upgrades, which also let customers add new functions at a later stage in vehicles suitably equipped. Consequently, the new BMW 7 Series will be kept right up to date with the latest software.

Assistance systems designed to optimize collaboration between driver and car.

The driver assistance functions available in the all-new 7 Series adhere to the BMW philosophy of providing the driver with the best possible support in all traffic situations. Their harmonious integration with the powertrain and chassis technology helps to ensure a safe and assured driving experience under all circumstances. All functions are collaborative in nature and can be overridden by the driver at any time. Drivers also have the option of customizing the steering and braking functions by adjusting their comfort- and safety-enhancing settings. In this way, the vehicle is able to replicate the customer’s personal driving style more closely, always acting and reacting just how the driver would intuitively expect and providing optimum assistance in every situation. 

Interaction between driver and vehicle is further supported by the intuitive operation of the assistance functions and the way they are depicted clearly in the vehicle. This is done using advanced forms of visualization, such as the Augmented View function, which appears in the information display – i.e., directly in the driver’s line of sight – for the first time in the new BMW 7 Series.

A single button on the steering wheel’s left-hand spoke allows both Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and the Steering and Lane Control Assistant to be activated with ease.

Front-collision warning for improved safety.

The standard front-collision warning system in the new BMW 7 Series comes with numerous additional functions and serves to improve safety in urban traffic and many other driving situations. Comprising features such as City Collision Mitigation with braking function, the system now reacts to oncoming traffic. And it can also warn the driver of pedestrians and cyclists who are parallel to the road and approaching the vehicle from the front or rear when turning right, reducing the risk of a collision.

The front-collision warning system also helps to increase safety when turning left. If a vehicle is approaching on the side of the road the driver needs to cross, visible and acoustic warnings are triggered, and the brakes are applied to prevent the driver from continuing with their maneuver. Speed Limit Info with manual Speed Limit Assist and the Evasion Assistant are likewise all fitted as standard, as is Lane Departure Warning.

Customized level of automated driving for added comfort and safety.

Another new feature is the Safe Exit function, which provides additional safety when the vehicle is stationary. If a vehicle or cyclist is approaching the new 7 Series at speed resulting in a risk of collision on either side of the car if a door were to be opened, the occupants are alerted to the danger by an acoustic signal and either flashing LEDs in the mirror or the ambient lighting and BMW Interaction Bar. The doors are also prevented from opening automatically.

Driving Assistant Professional with Highway Assistant and Augmented View.

The new Highway Assistant, part of the optional Advanced Driver Assistance Package ushers in a new dimension of assisted driving, bringing with it new levels of convenience and stress-free travel over long distances. It allows the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel when driving on highways or other roads with structurally separated roadways at speeds up to 130 km/h – double what was previously possible. They must, however, always maintain focus on the road ahead and be prepared to assume responsibility for steering.

Assisted View in the instrument cluster gives the driver an overview of the activated systems and their functionality. The central area of the information display is reserved for a three-dimensional mock-up of the vehicle and its surroundings. Here, the driver can see an image of the cars, trucks and motorcycles detected by the cameras and sensors in the driver’s current lane, along with those in any adjacent lanes.

The new Augmented View function included as part of the standard BMW Digital Cockpit Professional forms a perfect complement to the navigation system’s instructions in crucial situations, enabling exceptionally accurate guidance while driving. For this purpose, a live video stream from the driver’s perspective is shown on the information display behind the steering wheel in the new BMW 7 Series and augmented by supplementary information that matches the context. When dealing with confusing intersections, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route. In addition to this, information on applicable local parking regulations also appears in the live video stream in augmented reality form.

Automated parking: remote control and Maneuver Assistant.

With the arrival of the new 7, BMW is also reinforcing its pioneering role in the field of automated parking and maneuvering. BMW’s Reversing Assistant, standard in the new 7 Series, was the first system of its kind anywhere in the world when it was brought out in 2018. Parking Assistant Professional , which is standard in Canada, is able to store steering movements over distances of up to 200 meters and subsequently reproduce them in reverse, relieving the driver of the stress of having to navigate tricky driveways and other challenging paths in reverse.

Parking Assistant Professional also brings further automated parking innovations with it. Instead of just using other vehicles as reference points to help it select a parking space and straighten the vehicle when parking, for instance, the system is now also able to use the curb and any road lines as guides. More impressively, the new remote functionality gives drivers the ability to also control all maneuvers into and out of parking spaces from outside the vehicle using the My BMW App on their smartphone. It is possible to switch between in-vehicle and remote control at any point during the maneuver.

This remote functionality applies when using the Maneuver Assistant, another new feature that uses GPS data and the trajectory data from steering movements to record and store up to ten scenarios in different locations, each covering a distance of up to 200 meters. When the vehicle next arrives at a stored starting point, such as the entrance to a narrow, curving driveway, the Maneuver Assistant will be able to carry out all the tasks required to complete the maneuver, controlling the accelerator, brakes and steering as well as changing gear to move forward or reverse. If necessary, the system can switch between Drive and Reverse repeatedly while carrying out the corresponding steering, throttle, and brake inputs, for example when negotiating its way through a parking garage with little space and sharp corners. While the automated maneuver is being performed, the driver can focus on monitoring the vehicle’s surroundings. The remote functionality will also give drivers the option of stopping the maneuver at any point and exiting the vehicle in order to control the remainder of the maneuver from their smartphone. This can be done from a distance of up to six metres from the car.

The new vehicle experience: BMW iDrive and innovative digital services.

The BMW Digital Cockpit Professional includes the new-generation BMW iDrive 8 software along with exceptionally powerful connectivity and data processing capabilities. It takes the interaction between the driver and vehicle into the digital future. The new, multi-sensory BMW iDrive system offers many more options for drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment, and communication functions as well as digital services.

The user experience aboard the new BMW 7 Series is underpinned by intuitive, multimodal operation using the touch-focused BMW Curved Display, voice control, the iDrive Controller and the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. The fully digital BMW Curved Display and the continually expanding capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant mean the new vehicle experience BMW iDrive has been primarily geared towards interaction using touch and voice control. The customizable displays also help to create a close connection between driver and vehicle. Besides the BMW Curved Display and BMW Interaction Bar, the latest-generation BMW Head-Up Display – also fitted as standard – and the Augmented View feature now shown in the information display behind the steering wheel for the first time also help maximize comfort and safety by providing exactly the right information and optimum guidance in all driving situations.

BMW Digital Key Plus is turning into a full-function vehicle key.

BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to automatically lock and unlock their new BMW 7 Series with a compatible version of Apple iPhone when close to the vehicle by means of security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology, making a conventional car key superfluous. There is no need to even remove the iPhone from their pocket or bag as they approach the car or walk away. Once inside, the iPhone can be left in the user’s pocket or bag or placed in the smartphone tray. At a later stage, the Digital Key Plus will be capable of enabling additional functions to be performed in the vicinity of the vehicle via the My BMW App using UWB technology. These will include automatic opening and closing of the doors and boot as well as partial activation of the alarm system.

The BMW Digital Key Plus can be set up using the My BMW App. The car owner can also share it – and therefore access to the vehicle – with up to five other users.

“Great Entrance Moments”: emotional connection with vehicle starts on the approach.

“Great Entrance Moments” is the name given to the user experience from the point when the driver first approaches the new BMW 7 Series until the journey begins. Once the distance between vehicle and driver drops below about 3 metres, the vehicle carries out a choreographed sequence of steps. This begins with an orchestrated lighting effect using the exterior and interior lights, including the illuminated kidney grille, the dynamic light carpet in the entrance area, the Panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof, and the BMW Interaction Bar. When the driver is six feet away, the greeting scenario proceeds to automatically unlock and open the doors at the same time as playing a start-up animation on the BMW Curved Display. This shows a personal greeting in a welcome window as well as handy suggestions and information, all with distinctive acoustic accompaniment.

The security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology included with the standard Comfort Access feature allows precision location pinpointing between the vehicle and the key or compatible smartphone. 

Personalized driving experience with up to seven My Modes.

The new My Modes create an all-encompassing interplay of vehicle functions, displays and interior ambience. They can be selected easily by voice command or by using the button on the centre console that replaces the Driving Experience Control switch previously located there. The new BMW 7 Series offers a choice of up to seven My Modes, depending on specification. They each activate specific settings for the powertrain and chassis, the appearance of the readouts on the BMW Curved Display and the interior lighting including BMW Interaction Bar. In the case of the BMW i7, the tone of Iconic Sounds Electric likewise changes to suit the selected My Mode. And, for the first time, the content shown in the BMW Head-Up Display also adapts when either Sport or Efficient is activated.

Personal Mode, Sport Mode and Efficient Mode are joined in the new BMW 7 Series by three new My Modes as standard. Expressive Mode blends the driving experience with a dramatic interior mood. Expressive colours and abstract patterns set the tone for visualization of content on the BMW Curved Display. When combined with the BMW Iconic Sounds Electric created for the BMW i7 as part of a collaboration between the BMW Group and film score composer Hans Zimmer, switching to Expressive Mode also produces an unconventional soundtrack inside the car that captures the prevailing driving situation with remarkable intensity. In Relax Mode, the focus shifts to well-being, harmony, and relaxation, accompanied by graphics on the BMW Curved Display inspired by natural landscapes. The seats’ massage function is also activated if fitted, while the BMW i7 generates a subtle and harmonious interior soundscape to match.

Theater Mode features as part of the new in-car entertainment system with BMW Theater Screen in the rear. When activated, the rear compartment of the cabin is transformed into a private cinema lounge by gracefully lowering the 31-inch BMW Theater Screen, closing the sunshades, and adjusting the seat position and interior lighting accordingly. Passengers in the rear are also able to select the different My Modes using the BMW Touch Command units in either armrest.

Optimum connectivity with 5G and Personal eSIM.

The new BMW 7 Series moves into the era of 5G. The standard Personal eSIM integrated into the vehicle alongside the Vehicle SIM allows the two SIMs to be active simultaneously, and both are designed for the new 5G mobile technology. The Personal eSIM essentially turns the 7 Series into another connected device in the customer’s digital world. Mobile reception is significantly improved by the vehicle’s own 5G antenna system when using a 5G capable phone on a compatible network.

The Personal eSIM allows the customer to use the communications and connectivity functions covered by their mobile agreement from their car with ease – even in situations where they don’t have their smartphone with them. Users can extend an existing mobile agreement by activating the Personal eSIM via one of the available network operators. What’s more, the Personal eSIM isn’t linked to just one car, but the user’s BMW ID – meaning it can be transferred to other BMW vehicles with Personal eSIM functionality.

Front-seat entertainment: YouTube streaming on the BMW Curved Display.

The new BMW 7 Series will allow the driver and front passenger to watch video on demand services on the control display for the first time. This means they can pass the time while waiting for the vehicle to charge or fuel, for example, by enjoying a diverse program of in-car entertainment. 

Starting with YouTube, the range of available services is set to expand continually as BMW adds further third-party apps. The Personal eSIM in the vehicle must be optioned and activated for video streaming capability.

Improved telecommunications access for rear seat passengers.

The new BMW 7 Series also allows passengers in the rear to use the integrated audio system for making phone calls. The Touch Command units in the rear doors enable them to both access their contacts and place or accept calls. The built-in head rest speakers that are optionally available as part of the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System ensure premium audio quality for hands-free phone calls. Calls can either be kept within the occupant’s personal audio zone or shared with the rest of the vehicle. The microphones filter out unwanted background noise, guaranteeing outstanding audio quality.

Customers are also able to have pictures from the interior camera sent to their smartphone using the My BMW App’s remote function if they wish to glance inside the car to check whether bags or other items have been left there, for example. The interior camera is also activated together with the anti-theft recorder, which starts a recording of the interior the instant the vehicle’s anti-theft alarm system is triggered.

Sustainability in product design and manufacturing. Driving pleasure and prestige against the backdrop of responsibility.

The BMW Group is relentlessly pursuing its goal of being the most successful and also the most sustainable manufacturer of premium cars. Continuous improvements to efficiency and systematic electrification enabled the company to cut its brands’ fleet CO2 emissions by 53 percent between 1995 and 2020. The BMW Group continued in very much the same vein in 2021, beating its CO2 emissions targets in the EU. According to its own calculations, the company undercut the target fleet value of around 126 g/km for the 27 EU countries plus Norway and Iceland by some ten grams.

Improving sustainability is not just about drive systems with minimal or zero local emissions. Instead, consideration is given to the complete lifecycle of a vehicle, from development and procurement of raw materials through manufacturing and the use phase to subsequent recycling. The BMW Group has set itself the target of reducing carbon emissions throughout the value chain by 40 percent by 2030. It is also the first German carmaker to have joined the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign led by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company’s roadmap to climate neutrality is therefore following a scientifically validated and transparent route that is in tune with the Paris Agreement’s most ambitious objectives. At the same time, the company has also undertaken to meet the target of complete climate neutrality throughout the value chain by 2050 at the latest.

New BMW 7 Series plays a distinct role in helping to achieve the sustainability goals.

The new BMW 7 Series range makes its own individual contribution to efforts to reduce the ecological footprint throughout the product lifecycle. Consequently, the brand’s new flagship model delivers the ultimate in driving pleasure and prestige against a backdrop of a responsible corporate strategy that sets ambitious sustainability targets for each model and each model range. Implementation of the appropriate measures at all stages of the value chain makes the new BMW 7 Series a unique proposition within its segment.

This is particularly true of the BMW i7 with its purely electric drive system. The premiere of a fully electrified model variant represents the new BMW 7 Series range’s most valuable contribution to accomplishing the sustainability goals and underlines how the company is endeavoring to cut carbon emissions in the use phase of the entire fleet and across all segments by a further 50 percent by 2030 (compared with the figure for 2019).

A particularly rigorous approach is taken to reducing the CO2 emissions released during production of the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology fitted in the new BMW i7. In the supply chain alone, utilizing green electricity for battery cell production and making increased use of secondary raw materials cuts CO2 emissions by around 20 per cent compared with a vehicle where these measures are not deployed.

Responsible raw materials production.

The sustainability targets defined for all model variants in the new 7 Series range also include the upstream production chains. The BMW Group has undertaken to create the most sustainable supply chain anywhere in the automotive industry. The focal points on the purchasing side are compliance with environmental and social standards, respect for human rights, conservation of natural resources and reduction of CO2 emissions. Measures for optimizing sustainability are therefore established in consultation with suppliers, such as using secondary raw materials and harnessing renewable energy.

Besides an eco-friendly manufacturing process, consideration is also given here to the recyclability of the component in question and to health-related aspects. The checks also include ensuring that potentially allergenic materials, such as nickel, are not used in areas where they could be touched by customers.

This holistic approach to improving sustainability also embraces those technological developments that make it possible to reduce the use of critical materials, or even dispense with them altogether. For instance, a design principle has been devised for the electric motors forming part of the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology in the BMW i7 (which are also manufactured at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing alongside the car) that eliminates the need to use rare-earth metals in the rotor. Instead of the customary magnets for which these raw materials are needed, an electrically excited rotor is used to ensure both instantaneous and precisely controllable actuation of the electric drive. The BMW Group has thereby capitalized on its industry-leading development and production expertise in the field of drive systems to enable it to manufacture electric motors irrespective of the availability of critical raw materials.

The BMW Group procures the cobalt required to manufacture the battery cells itself, before making it available to the battery cell suppliers. This gives the company complete transparency with regard to the material’s origin and the mining methods used.

Although no cobalt from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is being used in the battery cells for fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, the BMW Group is following the principle of “empowerment before withdrawal” by participating in a local project there. The company, together with its partners, has commissioned the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) to develop measures aimed at improving working and living conditions for both artisanal mine workers and the inhabitants of nearby communities. If the project is successful, having cobalt supplied directly from the DRC could become an option for the BMW Group once more.

Lithium is another raw material that is vital for the production of high-voltage batteries but classified as critical. The BMW Group again sources this raw material directly before supplying it to battery cell manufacturers. This ensures complete transparency regarding its origin. In 2019, the BMW Group already signed a supply agreement for lithium from hard-rock deposits in Australian mines. Since 2022, the company has additionally been procuring lithium from Argentina, where this raw material is extracted from the saline water in salt lakes using an innovative technique, minimizing the impact on local ecosystems and communities.

The BMW Group has also commissioned two prestigious American universities to carry out a study into sustainable lithium extraction in Latin America. The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of lithium extraction on local water supplies. 

Use of secondary materials and renewable raw materials.

Among other sustainability goals set out by the BMW Group is the increased use of secondary raw materials in vehicle production. The company is pursuing the vision of a circular economy with the aim of keeping raw materials within a loop for as long as possible, thereby reducing the input of primary materials as well as the associated potentially environmentally harmful mining of raw materials and their often energy- and carbon-intensive processing. At present, vehicles are manufactured using nearly 30 percent recycled and reused material on average. The ‘secondary first’ approach is intended to gradually increase this figure to 50 percent.

To reduce the input of primary aluminum, which leads to a particularly energy-intensive manufacturing process, the BMW Group has decided to make targeted use of secondary material for this high-grade lightweight metal. The proportion of secondary aluminum used in manufacturing the castings for the models in the new 7 Series range is already up to as much as 50 percent.

The BMW Group has created closed loops for steel and aluminum between the plants responsible for the new BMW 7 Series in Dingolfing and Landshut as well as its suppliers. Using secondary materials instead of primary materials brings about a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions of around 80 percent for aluminum and up to 70 percent for steel (depending on the exact alloy/material composition). Utilizing secondary materials has the additional benefits of preserving natural resources and helping to prevent infringement of environmental and social standards along the entire supply chain.

All steel waste from the BMW Group’s press shops is supplied to steel companies and reused. Aluminum waste from the Dingolfing and Munich plants is likewise sent to aluminum companies, with some 70 percent of the residual material eventually being reused as part of a direct closed-loop system.

The cabin of the new BMW 7 Series features carefully selected materials combining top standards of quality with a high sustainability factor. The key considerations here are conservation of resources, energy efficiency in manufacture and suitability for recycling. The floor coverings in the new BMW 7 Series are made from a synthetic yarn that is produced from recycled nylon waste material in a specially developed process. The source material for this includes fishing nets recovered from the sea along with worn flooring and residual waste from plastics manufacturing. Using this material, which is known by the name of Econyl, helps to both preserve resources and reduce climate-damaging emissions. The process for manufacturing the recycled plastic emits around 80 percent less CO2 than conventional production of petroleum-based nylon.

High-quality recycled material is also featured in a multitude of other components in the new BMW 7 Series. The substructure of the door paneling, the cowl panel cover, the bumper guides, and the surround for the front grille, for example, are all made from up to 100 percent reused plastic. Meanwhile, the fibers used for the surface material of both the headliner and the A-, B- and C-pillar trim originate entirely from recycled PET bottles. The cable ducts are manufactured using between 60 and 100 percent recycled plastic.

The new high-quality upholstery material Veganza offers properties similar to leather as far as comfort and surface feel are concerned. At the same time, this material heralds a CO2 saving of around 85 percent compared with full leather trim. The materials used for leather upholsteries come from controlled sources either in Europe or the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The use of natural-fiber materials likewise has a positive effect on the environmental footprint of the new 7 Series. Not only do they weigh around 30 percent less than the equivalent plastic materials, they also result in deductions from the calculated CO2 figure, as they absorb CO2 while growing and release oxygen. Natural fibers are used for various components in the new BMW 7 Series, including the support for the centre console’s substructure.

Electricity from renewable resources for component and vehicle manufacture.

CO2 emissions from vehicle production have been lowered by over 70 percent since 2006. All plants in the BMW Group’s international production network have been operating a net carbon-neutral policy since 2021. The electricity purchased for production of the new BMW 7 Series at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing is fully renewable.

Electricity from renewable sources represents one of the most important levers for cutting CO2 emissions in the supply chain too. The BMW Group has signed over 400 contracts with suppliers agreeing the use of green power, encompassing not just manufacturers of battery cells for the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, but also aluminum suppliers and manufacturers of aluminum components. Since February 2021, the BMW Group has been procuring aluminum manufactured in the United Arab Emirates with the help of solar power. Electricity generated in a vast solar park located in the desert outside Dubai is used for producing the lightweight metal. The quantity of aluminum acquired that has been produced using solar power covers nearly half the annual requirements of the light metal foundry at BMW Group Plant Landshut, whose output includes the casings for the latest-generation electric motors fitted in the BMW i7.

Starting in 2024, the new BMW 7 Series will also benefit from the switch to cast aluminum wheels manufactured entirely using green electricity. This will see the BMW Group take another step towards its target of establishing the most sustainable supply chain in the entire automotive industry. The switch will apply to both the extremely energy-intensive electrolysis stage during aluminum manufacture and the process of casting the wheels. The necessary agreements for this have been reached with all the BMW Group’s wheel suppliers.

Wheels have hitherto accounted for some five per cent of the CO2 emissions produced in the supply chain. This figure will be more than halved by the switch to more sustainable production using green electricity. The BMW Group is supplied with around 10 million light-alloy wheels every year, 95 per cent of which are cast aluminum wheels. The company will be able to ensure that the aluminum material is handled in a conscious and sustainable way by the contracted manufacturers by conducting independent inspections and will save as much as 500,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Sustainable production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing.

All model variants in the new BMW 7 Series range will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The plant in Lower Bavaria is the first facility in the BMW Group’s international production network to manufacture all-electric, plug-in hybrid and combustion-engined models on a single assembly line. Besides being the lead plant for luxury models, BMW Group Plant Dingolfing is also home to the company’s competence centre for electric drive system production, whose tasks include manufacturing both the electric motors and the high-voltage batteries for the BMW i7 directly on site. As part of the ongoing transformation to electric mobility, manufacturing capacity and the workforce at the competence centre for electric drive system production have both been expanded significantly in recent times – from around 600 employees at the start of 2020 to over 2,000 now.

Many other measures have been implemented with a view to making production of the new BMW 7 Series at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing sustainable besides purchasing green energy. The plant succeeded in integrating body production for the new models into the body shop’s existing facilities, despite them not having been originally designed to be adaptable for successor production. This means that much of the machinery there can continue to be used, along with several hundred production robots. Tens of millions of euros are currently being invested in the paint shop to reduce its resource consumption. New cathodic dip coating lines and a dry separation system are being installed there that will reduce both water and energy requirements significantly. Rather than being recycled as process heat as in the past, the waste heat given off by the drying processes will be used for generating electricity in future.

Energy-efficient machinery, packaging planning and transport logistics form further aspects of sustainable production, as do recycling and water management. The plant is piloting the use of electric trucks for internal goods transport. The recycling rate at the Dingolfing plant exceeds 90 per cent, while the recovery rate is even higher at over 99 per cent. As a result, BMW Group Plant Dingolfing produced a mere 580 grams or so of residual waste per manufactured vehicle in 2021. And over 40 percent of the water needed is sourced from the plant’s own wells, reducing the burden on the region’s drinking water reserves.

Systematic reduction of CO2 in the use phase.

The BMW 7 Series is a technology flagship and driver of innovation for the BMW Group’s entire product range, and this also applies to technological innovations designed to increase efficiency during the use phase. All model variants come with the latest generation of the all-electric, plug-in hybrid or combustion-engined drive system that powers them.

The new BMW i7 is fitted with an upgraded version of adaptive recuperation for increased efficiency and range. When combined with an anticipatory style of driving, this adaptive recuperation function allows more than 90 per cent of all deceleration to be performed using brake energy regeneration alone, without any need to engage the braking system. Optimized control of the high-voltage battery’s temperature prolongs its service life. BMW Charging customers are able to replenish the high-voltage battery purely with carbon-neutral energy from all power suppliers.

On all other models, combustion engines from the new BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engine family are combined with the latest 48V mild hybrid technology. This has the effect of compensating for the additional fuel consumption caused by the car’s far more extensive standard specification, and actually more than cancels out the difference on some model variants. This is further helped by the intelligent lightweight design measures for the body and chassis of the new BMW 7 Series as well as its optimized aerodynamic properties. The flush-fitting door handles and aerodynamically optimized light-alloy wheels are two of the new features that serve to streamline airflow.

Digital technology is also used to boost efficiency on all model variants. The new Efficiency Trainer keeps the driver permanently informed of the driving state and energy flow as well as encouraging them to drive in the most efficient way possible. At the same time, the new My Modes provide a complete efficiency experience. The driver receives advice on throttle control for the situation at hand in both the information display and the optional BMW Head-Up Display. A power meter displays tips for accelerating, decelerating, or driving at a constant speed efficiently. In the process, camera and navigation system data is also used to assist with anticipatory driving when approaching a junction, a built-up area or a change of speed limit. The driving style analysis provides an evaluation of acceleration behavior and anticipatory use of the accelerator. The reward for efficiency-optimized driving is extra range.

Munich. The series development process of the BMW i7 (power consumption combined: 22.5 – 19.5 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km; forecast based on the vehicle's development status to date) in entering its final phase with the car undergoing a demanding test programme in extreme road and weather conditions. During so-called hot-region testing on tracks and public roads all over the world, the development engineers primarily verify the performance and reliability of the electric motors, the all-wheel drive and the high-voltage battery when being exposed to maximum stress from high temperatures, unpaved roads, dust and large differences in altitude. The road to series production takes the prototypes of the BMW i7 over gravel tracks into deserts, into the mountains and on a whole series of highly dynamic routes. The BMW i7, the world's only purely electrically powered luxury sedan, will be presented in the course of 2022 together with other model variants of the new BMW 7 Series.

The endurance test in the hot regions of various countries and continents serves in particular to test and safeguard all components of the electric drive system. The components of the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology developed for the BMW i7 demonstrate their unrestricted functionality even under the most adverse conditions when being used continuously in extremely high outside temperatures, permanent sunlight and dry conditions.

Within a firmly defined test programme for the prototypes, loads are simulated that correspond to the challenges faced by a series-production vehicle during a complete product life cycle. Supported by sensitive on-board measurement technology, experienced test engineers register every reaction of the electric motors, the high-voltage battery, drive control and the integrated cooling system as well as the charging technology and energy management to weather and road-related influences.

The testing programme, which covers tens of thousands of kilometres, includes long-distance and high-speed driving as well as stop-and-go traffic in scorching heat. In addition, test sections with particularly large differences in altitude were selected at the hot-region test sites. In this way the temperature behaviour of the electric motors and the torque control of the all-electric BMW xDrive can be analysed during a particularly dynamic and long-lasting uphill drive. To further increase the load on the drive system, the test programme also includes mountain driving in trailer mode. At the same time, the high-voltage battery shows how it able to continuously deliver peak power to supply the e-motors. As an extreme scenario and a particular challenge for energy management and power electronics, the test also involves driving downhill with a high-voltage storage system that is already fully charged at the start and can therefore no longer absorb any recuperation energy.

The gruelling hot-region test procedure is also used to put the performance of the air-conditioning and other on-board electronics, as well as the temperature resistance of the materials used in the interior, to a particularly tough test. This is all to ensure that the world's only purely electrically powered luxury sedan delivers a perfectly harmonised and exclusive driving experience in any situation.

BMW, one of the world’s most successful premium carmakers, also boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.
BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner, further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i “Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability. This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts, and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.
