Munich/Bolzano. Longing for summer makes us look
south. More than ever, the new BMW 4 Series Convertible and the new
BMW Z4 invite you to discover the ideal place in the sun. Just like
the new BMW 4 Series Coupé, the open-top four-seater comes with fresh
design accents and numerous refined details. The Roadster, with its
new drive concept, encourages drivers to tackle winding mountain
passes on their way to southern climes. A tour of three countries -
from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps through the Austrian state of
Tyrol to the edge of the Dolomites in northern Italy - gives a perfect
impression of how driving pleasure can be experienced in BMW M
automobiles with in-line six-cylinder engines with different characters.

At the start of the journey to Lake Tegernsee, a grey veil lies over
the landscape. Gusty winds, low-hanging clouds, windscreen wipers in
constant use - this is the route along the southern shore of the lake.
Shortly afterwards, we pass the traditional spa town of Kreuth before
reaching the border crossing to Austria, which, almost 30 years after
joining the Schengen Agreement, is hardly recognisable as a former
border post.

8-speed Steptronic and BMW xDrive meet manual transmission and
rear-wheel drive.

The first highlight of the route is the almost ten-kilometre-long
"coastal road" along Lake Achensee. By now, the in-line
six-cylinder engines of the M Performance models have reached
operating temperature. The engines in the new BMW M440i xDrive
Convertible generate 275 kW/374 hp (consumption combined: 8.7
litres/100 km (62 miles); combined CO2 emissions: 197 g/km
according to WLTP, CO2 class: G) and in the BMW M440i
xDrive Coupé (consumption combined: 8.5 litres/100 km (62 miles);
combined CO2 emissions: 192 g/km according to WLTP,
CO2 class: G). The 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission
and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive ensure that all this power
is transferred to the road with maximum confidence.

The BMW Z4 M40i in the Pure Impulse Edition (consumption combined:
8.7 litres/100 km (62 miles); combined CO2 emissions: 197
g/km according to WLTP, CO2 class: G): The 250 kW/340 hp
engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission for the first time.
The manual transmission features M-specific components in the gear
wheel set and shaft area, as well as an external gear shift mechanism
that been specially designed exclusively for the Roadster and its
six-cylinder in-line engine. The torque is transmitted to the rear
wheels in the classic manner.

If you 'change gear' at Maurach in time to take the right-hand
turnoff, you will soon reach the village of Jenbach with direct access
to the Inn Valley motorway. But as the first rays of sunshine break
through the clouds, we spontaneously decide to take the parallel
country road to Innsbruck. Shortly after the Jenbacher Museum, we take
an extra lap around the roundabout. At the push of a button, the soft
tops open.

New: Laserlight rear lights for Coupé and Convertible,
Roadster with axle-specific wheel dimensions.

A brief stopover in the Tyrolean capital provides an opportunity to
take a look at the latest design innovations for the Convertible,
Coupé and Roadster. The two four-seaters now feature particularly
striking headlights and Laserlight rear lights in the style of the
special edition BMW M4 CSL, as well as new paintwork. In addition to
the exclusive Frozen Deep Green metallic paint finish, the BMW Z4 Pure
Impulse Edition is available in a choice of seven other paint
finishes. In addition to the high-gloss black exterior mirror caps,
the dark-coloured M light alloy wheels also invite you to take a
closer look when viewed from the side. They measure 19 inches at the
front and 20 inches at the rear. The axle-specific wheel dimensions,
used for the first time on the Roadster, are the most visible part of
a comprehensive chassis modification. The positive effects on
cornering behaviour will become apparent later.

Driving through Innsbruck, the Bergisel ski jump on the southern
outskirts of the city repeatedly catches your eye. It is traditionally
the third stop on the annual Four Hills Tournament. Its jump tower was
completely rebuilt in 2002 and 2003. The plans were drawn up by
architect Zeha Hadid, who also designed the BMW Group's central
building in Leipzig, which was completed a year later.

But winter sports are naturally out of the question today. Instead,
the old Brenner Pass road is ideal for relaxed cruising, with the
occasional short burst of speed and plenty of twists and turns. It is
about 35 kilometres to the Austrian-Italian border and the almost
1,400 metre high Brenner Pass. The road was the main north-south link
between Austria and Italy until the Brenner motorway was built and
opened to traffic along its entire length in 1971. If you take the
historic route today, you can admire the Europe Bridge along the way.
At up to 190 metres above the ground, Austria's highest bridge carries
the motorway over the Wipp Valley between Patsch and Schönberg.

Driving over the Brenner Pass is the ideal foretaste of the most
challenging and eventful stage of the Three Countries Tour. From
Sterzing, the shortest route to Merano leads over the Jaufenpass at an
altitude of just under 2 100 metres. The 50-kilometre route, with its
numerous serpentine bends, makes it particularly interesting to
compare the two driving concepts.

On the winding mountain passes, the Coupé, Convertible and
Roadster show their individual strengths.

Comfortable driving pleasure quickly turns into an ambitious search
for the ideal line on the winding tarmac in the BMW M440i xDrive
Convertible and BMW M440i xDrive Coupé. The 8-speed sports
transmission Steptronic always finds the right gear for dynamic
acceleration out of the bend, even after abrupt braking manoeuvres
before a particularly tight bend.

The design of the BMW xDrive system, with its emphasis on the rear
wheels, and the M Sport differential in the final drive also help to
ensure that the power is always directed to where it is most effective
for maximum driving dynamics. The sporty driving experience and
expressive sound of the in-line six-cylinder engine are complemented
by magnificent panoramic views. After every bend there is a new view
of Alpine peaks and green valleys.

The BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition leaves it to the driver to
select the right gear for the ideal engine speed. The pedals and
gearshift lever can also be used to compose a fascinating soundtrack,
which flows directly from the exhaust system's trapezoidal tailpipes
into the interior of the two-seater.

Like the drive concept, the model-specific suspension technology is
designed to emphasise the Roadster's purist character more than ever
before. In addition to the exclusive wheel combination, a stiffer
anti-roll bar clamp on the front axle, specific additional springs and
modified characteristic maps for the electronically controlled shock
absorbers of the Adaptive M Chassis are used. In the hairpin bends
before and after the summit, the new software settings for the
variable sport steering, traction control and M Sport differential are
particularly effective. In the BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition, the
direct steering into the bend and the increased directional stability
during the next acceleration phase ultimately ensure an unadulterated
performance experience characterised by purist driving pleasure.

Beyond St. Leonhard, the sports programme comes to an end. On its
south-western section, the Jaufen road winds its way down into the
Passeier Valley in wide bends. The spa town of Merano is soon reached.
At this point, at the latest, you will begin to feel the hoped-for
Mediterranean flair. The surrounding area is full of opportunities for
cycling, hiking and climbing. The BMW 4 Series Convertible, the BMW 4
Series Coupé and the BMW Z4 continue on the MeBo, the main road that
links Merano with Bolzano. Passing Lana, Terlan and Eppan, it leads
through the Etschtal valley directly to the South Tyrolean capital.
Once there, the traveller is faced with a choice: back to the cold
north, or further south towards the sun? As long as the soft top is
open, the choice is not all that difficult.

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Press Release,Coupé,Z4,Convertible,4 Series,G22,G23,G29,Product,BMW

Richmond Hill, ON. Already innovators in the premium
midsize class in terms of aesthetic appeal, driving pleasure,
electrification, and digitalization, the new BMW i4 is building
further on its unique status in the marketplace with updates in all
these areas.

New exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels, new designs for
the headlights, and rear lights available with laser-lit accents
accentuate the bold visual impact of both models.

Inside, the BMW Curved Display provides the stage for the latest
evolution of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, based on BMW Operating
System 8.5. The display and control/operation system can be specified
with an Augmented View display for the BMW Maps navigation system. And
new steering wheel designs, interior trim elements, and upholsteries
bring modern touches to the premium ambience of the interior.

The new BMW i4 will be built at BMW’s home plant in Munich, whose
transformation into a production facility geared exclusively to
all-electric models is being fueled by substantial investment. In
Canada, the Gran Coupe bodystyle for the 4 Series continues to be
exclusive to the i4. The worldwide market launch of the new BMW i4
will get underway in July 2024.

New design for the BMW kidney grille, headlights, and rear lights.

Slim headlights and a vertically arranged BMW kidney grille dropping
deeply towards the road define the front-end styling of the BMW i4. A
refreshed design brings additional visual impact to these signature
brand features. The surround of the BMW kidney grille is now finished
in matte chrome, both as standard and in conjunction with the optional
M Sport package. Due to the lower cooling requirement of the electric
drive system, the BMW kidney grille of the new BMW i4 has a fully
enclosed upper section, below which is a high-gloss black surface
topped by a matte-silver honeycomb pattern.

As well as a front apron with large side air intakes, the M Sport
package for the BMW i4 includes a diffuser element in the lower
section of the rear bumper, now finished in high-gloss black. If the
optional Black Exterior Contents is specified, the BMW kidney grille
surround also comes in high-gloss black.

The slim headlights have been visually and functionally upgraded. Low
and high beam are generated from a single LED module, and pair of
vertical and subtly arrow-shaped LED units house the side marker
lights, daytime running lights, and turn signal functions. The new
headlights generate a Welcome Light animation once the driver
approaches the vehicle.

Adaptive LED Headlights are optional on all other variants as part of
the M Sport Pro Package. Vehicles equipped as such are also fitted
with new LED Taillights with Laser Technology. This innovative
lighting effect employs a technology first seen on the BMW M4 CSL, a
high-performance special edition model. Here, laser diodes illuminate
a fibre optic bundle, giving the rear units an intricate light graphic.

New exterior paint finishes and aerodynamic wheels.

The selection of exterior paint finishes for the BMW i4 now includes
Cape York Green Metallic and Vegas Red Metallic. A wide variety of BMW
Individual paint finishes are also available.

The range of optional alloy wheel designs also features an attractive
new addition. A new 19-inch Aero Wheel, style 996M, in Jet Black with
a burnished finish can be ordered on cars specified with the optional
M Sport Package.

New interior accents enhance a progressive sporting appeal.

The changes to the interior of the new BMW i4 are focused on
digitalization and achieving a sharper sporting profile. The upgraded
BMW iDrive with QuickSelect further reduces in the number of buttons
and controls in the cockpit. The functions of the automatic climate
control system, seat ventilation, and seat and steering wheel heating,
where equipped, can now be operated by touch via the BMW Curved
Display or by voice command through the BMW Intelligent Personal
Assistant. New adjustment controls for the air vents allow the airflow
direction to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

The new BMW i4 is fitted as standard with sport seats in Perforated
Sensatec. Vernasca Leather with Contrast Stitching is available in
five colours including the new bi-colour Black with Coral Red
Highlight. Also new to the i4 are optional Merino and Full Merino
interiors in Black, Tartufo Brown and Ivory White.

2025 BMW i4 comes standard with a two-spoke steering wheel with
polygonal rim and illuminated multifunction buttons. Adding the M
Sport Package now brings an M Leather Steering Wheel in a three-spoke
design with a flat-bottomed rim and a black centre stripe marking the
12 o’clock position. The three-spoke M Leather Steering Wheel standard
on the i4 M50 xDrive additionally features M tricolour stitching and a
red, 12 o’clock marker.

High-quality materials and new interior trim.

New interior trims include Brushed Aluminum, Fineline Light
Open-Pored Wood Trim and Ash Grey Blue Open-Pored Wood Trim.

The optional Sensatec upholstery covering the dashboard now has a
smoother, more refined surface that extends to the upper portion of
all four door panels. And customers can now specfiy the gear selector,
BMW iDrive Controller, and Start/Stop button on the centre console in glass.

Unique design elements for the M Performance model.

The BMW i4 M50 xDrive underlines its sporty character with M-specific
design features. It now features a BMW kidney grille with a high-gloss
black surround and horizontally arranged bars adorned by a BMW M logo.
And the front apron elements previously finished in Cerium Grey now
come in high-gloss black.

The M Carbon Exterior Package available as an option includes side
air intake trim at the front end, M specific exterior mirror caps,
finishers on the sides of the rear diffuser, and a subtle rear spoiler
all made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Display and control/operation system, connectivity.

The latest generation of the BMW iDrive display and control/operation
system with QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 8.5 opens up a
new way of intuitively controlling vehicle functions and accessing
digital services in the BMW i4. With the digital BMW Curved Display
screen grouping and the expanded capabilities of the BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant, the driver-centric cockpit has been optimized for
touch control and natural language.

The climate control functions are also operated digitally in the new
BMW i4, enabling a further reduction in the number of physical buttons
and controls. The control/operation system additionally comprises
multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, the BMW iDrive Controller
and, as an option, the BMW Head-Up Display.

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect: simplified and even more
intuitive.

The system’s QuickSelect feature paves the way for an improved menu
structure that takes cues from consumer electronics devices. It allows
the driver to navigate to functions directly from the newly arranged
home screen without having to enter submenus. The new, flat menu
structure makes it much easier to switch between different functions
and helps the driver to focus their attention on what’s happening on
the road.

The new home screen continuously displays the navigation system’s map
view. On the same level, there is a vertical bar on the driver’s side
of the display containing widgets that can be individually selected
and arranged. The BMW i4 also includes a widget for the charging
functions. Some of the widgets can also be swiped horizontally to show
additional content. The related functions can then be called up
directly with QuickSelect. And once the relevant settings have been
chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at the lower edge of the control
display is all it takes to return to the home screen. Icons for direct
access to the climate control menu, Apps menu, and Apple CarPlay® and
Android Auto™ can also now be found next to the home icon.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with additional languages
and new graphics.

Voice control using the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is set to
become even more interactive and intuitive in the new BMW i4. There is
now a choice of two different looks for the graphics visualising the
digital companion on the control display, with additional graphics
also appearing here in response to selected voice commands. For
instance, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant acknowledges the
request to look for a filling station nearby by showing the image of a
fuel pump, enriching the dialogue between driver and vehicle.

BMW Maps navigation system with new charging-optimised route
guidance and Augmented View.

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system forms part of the standard
BMW Connected Package Professional. Underpinned by BMW Operating
System 8.5, the system now makes it even easier to input destinations
and can offer additional information while driving. Further
enhancements include better usability of filters, a flatter menu
structure with touch buttons shown directly on the map view and
proactive route recommendations.

The latest version of BMW Maps also gives BMW i4 drivers access –
both from the vehicle and via the My BMW App – to improved functions
that enable charging-optimized route planning over long journeys. The
charging stops are planned so that the selected destination is reached
as quickly as possible. The driver’s preferred minimum charge level
when arriving at mid-journey stops and the final destination can be
adjusted in increments of five percent and incorporated into the route
planning. The system can also give preference to charging stations
operated by selected providers and exclude others from the route
planning at the driver’s request. The system will then propose the
latter only if there seems to be no alternative for an efficient route
without any large detours.

Additional information is provided for the selected charging
stations, such as supported connector types and payment options, as
well as the availability of sanitary, catering or shopping facilities
in the vicinity. The expected duration of the planned charging stop
and the resulting electricity costs can also be shown in advance. The
closer the vehicle gets to a scheduled mid-journey stop, the more
frequently the availability of the charging point is checked so that
an alternative route can be recommended in good time if necessary.
Regardless of the charging-optimized route given, a constant stream of
alternative charging options are also displayed, e.g. for spontaneous
mid-journey breaks.

Specifying the optional BMW Digital Cockpit Professional adds not
only the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display, but also the Augmented View
function. This offers contextual, real-time information to complement
the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of
the driver’s view on the control display or instrument cluster and
augmenting it with information that is currently relevant. At
confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is
integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best
turn-off for the planned route.

Personalization and remote access with BMW ID and My BMW App.

BMW Operating System 8.5 also makes it even easier to personalise the
user experience in the BMW i4. Signing in to the vehicle by scanning a
QR code with a smartphone is all it takes to import the customer’s
personal profile, load synchronizable settings and automatically link
the key detected in the vehicle with the BMW ID.

The vehicle is also automatically added to the My BMW App. Available
free of charge from the app stores for both iOS and Android, the My
BMW App acts as a universal digital interface that provides
information on the vehicle’s condition, charging status or remaining
range at any time. Depending on the car’s specification, it also gives
the user access to various remote functions. For example, the vehicle
can be located remotely via the My BMW App and the doors locked and
unlocked. The Remote 3D View functions included with the optional
Parking Assistant Plus give drivers the ability to call up a
three-dimensional live image of their vehicle’s immediate vicinity on
their smartphone.

Besides this, the My BMW App can also be used to send destination
addresses from the user’s smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation
system for route planning and to initiate, purchase or extend
ConnectedDrive Upgrades. It is also possible to control the charging
process and pre-conditioning for the BMW i4 from the My BMW App. The
My Trips feature including Efficiency Coach provides a monthly review
to the user with data and evaluations for distances travelled,
consumption and average speed, as well as offering helpful tips for
driving more efficiently.

Munich. With a brace of victories in the “Best Cars”
competition, BMW has backed up its successful end to 2023 with a
similarly fruitful beginning to 2024. The BMW 2 Series Coupé wrapped
up class victory in the compact segment for the third time in
succession, while the BMW X1 led the way in the “compact SUV”
category. The “Best Cars” award – voted on by readers of German
motoring magazine “auto, motor und sport” and in its 48th edition this
year – is one of the most prestigious in the European automotive
industry. Almost 100,000 respondents took part in the survey,
selecting one overall winner and one “imported car” champion from a
field of 455 models across 13 vehicle categories.

The start of 2024 was also marked by class victory for the new BMW 5
Series Sedan in the “Large Car” category of the “Women's Worldwide Car
of the Year” award. 75 female automotive journalists from 52 countries
picked out their favourites from a total of 62 vehicles in five
categories. Intended to showcase the influence of women in the
automotive industry and presented for the 14th time this year, this
prize takes into account factors such as safety, quality, price,
design, ride comfort, everyday usability and environmental impact. The
new BMW 5 Series Sedan won over the jury members with its electrified
drive system line-up (including the fully electric BMW i5), as well as
its spaciousness, advanced technology and now fully vegan interior.

This successful beginning to the year saw BMW building on its run of
success in a large number of awards in 2023. Models from the premium
brand’s current range claimed numerous prizes in both its home market
of Germany and its most important sales regions internationally. The
winners stretched across all the relevant categories, with compact
models, luxury vehicles and high-performance sports cars from BMW M
GmbH all making waves. As well as vehicles powered by combustion
engines, the readers and juries also recognised a strikingly high
number of representatives from BMW’s constantly expanding electric
mobility range.

“We’re very proud that our various BMW vehicles have won awards in so
many national and international competitions. This also shows that we
have attractive models in all segments that excite people,” says
Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Customer,
Brands, Sales. “The response to our models with all-electric drive
systems is particularly pleasing. This ties in with the strong demand
from customers and supports the BMW Group’s commitment to ramping up
electric mobility in all areas.”

Newcomer to the ranks of high-performance models and a fully
electric Sports Activity Vehicle both win a “Golden Steering Wheel”.

The “Golden Steering Wheel” presented by German publications “Auto
Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag” is one of the most prestigious
distinctions in the European car industry. BMW took two of these
coveted trophies back to Munich in 2023. The BMW M3 Competition
Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 –
10.1 l/100 km [27.2 – 28.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions,
combined: 235 – 229 g/km in the WLTP cycle) ranked first in the
“sports cars” category and the fully electric BMW iX1 topped the
“compact class”.

Both models added a string of other international awards to their
collections over the course of 2023. For example, the first ever
BMW M3 Touring – which combines the dynamic prowess of a
high-performance car with impressive levels of practicality – was
elected sports car of the year in the category for vehicles costing up
to 120,000 euros by readers of “Auto Bild Sportscars” magazine. And
acclaimed British TV programme “Top Gear” honoured the BMW M GmbH
newcomer with the title “All The Car You'll Ever Need” in its “Car of
the Year” awards.

The BMW iX1 collected a trio of awards in China, including
“All-Electric Premium SUV of the Year”. It also won the French
“Automobile Award 2023” in the “Green Tech” category and the “autonis
Award” bestowed by readers of “auto, motor und sport” to the year’s
most attractive new design.

Fully electric BMW i5 enjoys immediate success around the world.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW i5 also claimed an “autonis”
prize. Now also available with a fully electric drive system for the
first time, the new edition of the world’s most successful business
sedan was also named “Car of the Year” by Portuguese magazine
“Frontline”. The BMW i5 was also presented with equivalent awards in
Norway and Denmark, both particularly important markets for electric
vehicles. Norwegian daily “Dagbladet” teamed up with online portals
“DinSide” and “Elbi24” to celebrate the BMW i5. While in Denmark, the
i5 fought off competition from six other models to gain the most votes
for “Car of the Year” in a final round made up exclusively of fully
electric models. The jury of 20 Danish motoring journalists chose the
BMW i5 as their winner by a large margin.

Chinese publication “Auto World” crowned the BMW i5 as “Most
Anticipated Premium Executive Sedan of the Year”, and the fully
electric business sedan also collected three awards in Great Britain:
“The Car Expert” put the BMW i5 in top spot in its “Best Large Car
Award”, it was named “Premium Car of the Year” in the “2024
Electrifying.com Awards” and the “Comfortable Cruiser” topped its
class in Carwow’s “Car of the Year Awards 2024”.

The awards underscore the ability of the new BMW i5 Sedan to win
people over with numerous different qualities: from character-rich
design, a unique balance between sportiness and comfort, innovative
equipment features and progressive digital services to a drive system
whose power is matched by its capability over long distances. And it
also uses latest-generation BMW eDrive technology to transfer the
brand’s signature dynamic ability to the road with zero local
emissions. In addition, adaptive recuperation and an intelligent
combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the
interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help to give the BMW
i5 eDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined:
18.9 – 15.9 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) a range of 498 –
582 kilometres (309 – 362 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW’s electric mobility offensive is recognised with awards.

The BMW brand’s fully electric model line-up as a whole enjoyed a
successful year worldwide in 2023. As well as the BMW iX1 and BMW i5,
this was particularly true of the BMW i7 and BMW i4. In Great Britain
alone, these two models were both among the winners in seven awards.
Both won the “Auto Express New Car Award” in their respective vehicle
classes. The BMW i4 also claimed the “Pocket-lint Award” and “Business
Car Award”, and the BMW i7 celebrated success in both the “What Car?
Electric Car Awards” and the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”. The
fully electric luxury sedan racked up five prizes in China, too,
including the “Car of the Year” distinction from leading online
magazine “sohu.com”.

There was also much to celebrate in France and the USA, where the BMW
i7 was given the “Best Overall and Best Value” rating from “Money”
magazine and praised by “wards auto” magazine for its standout luxury
ambience and digital user experience with BMW Theatre Screen in the
rear compartment. Renowned US magazine “car and driver” named both the
BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/
100 km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW i4 eDrive40 M50 (electric power
consumption, combined: 19.1 – 16.1 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle)
among the “Best 10” of 2023.

Top marks and distinctions for the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4
Series ranges, the BMW M2 and the BMW X3.

BMW set the seal on a successful year in Germany with a two-pronged
triumph. The BMW 3 Series and BMW X3 closed out 2023 with class
victory in the coveted “Auto Trophy”. The BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3
Series Touring, for example, took clear victories in the hotly
contested midsize segment of the readers’ survey conducted by German
title “Auto Zeitung”, racking up 19.0 per cent of the vote. This was
the seventh class win in a row for the 3 Series. Meanwhile, the rugged
aura, interior spaciousness and commitment to electrification of the
BMW X3 helped it account for 15.3 per cent of the votes cast and
therefore the highest points total in the high-volume vehicle segment
of “SUVs costing 30,000 – 60,000 euros”.

The BMW 3 Series was a particularly prolific award-winner in Great
Britain. In the “Business Car Awards”, the 3 Series won the “Best
Premium Car” prize, and it also gained entry to the “Hall of Fame” of
“Fleet News” magazine as the “Most Reliable Company Car”. The BMW 3
Series won twice in the “What Car? Used Car Awards”, topping both the
“Used Executive Car” category and overall “Used Car of the Year”. And
then there was the “Best Used Hybrid Executive Car” distinction for
the BMW 330e Sedan (fuel consumption, combined: 1.9 – 1.4 l/100 km
[148.7 – 201.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined 20.1 –
18.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions, combined: 43 – 32 g/km in
the WLTP cycle). The plug-in hybrid model also tasted success in the
USA, where “Money” magazine described it as “Best for Handling”.

Adding to the wave of success enjoyed by the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 4
Series – with its standout sporting appeal – also enriched the brand’s
glittering international reputation in the premium midsize segment.
The best example of this came in the BMW 4 Series Coupé and BMW 4
Series Convertible’s showing in the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”
in Great Britain. The closed-roof two-door won the “Coupe of the Year”
for the third year in succession in 2023. And this year its open-top
sister model also won the “Convertible of the Year” award.

Two other British awards were claimed by the BMW M2. It was voted
“Best Performance Car” in “The Car Expert Awards”, and the compact
high-performance sports car also took the title of “Performance Car of
the Year” in the “Auto Express New Car Awards”.

Richmond Hill, ON. Driving pleasure and elegantly
sporty design. These have been hallmark brand values of BMW since its
earliest days, and the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series
Cabriolet embody them more than ever. The 2-litre 4-cylinder and
3-litre 6-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engines benefit from 48V mild
hybrid tech to improve efficency and responsiveness. The precisely
modified exterior design of the two models underscores their dynamic
character and exclusive style. The cutting-edge cockpit design
provides the ideal stage for the latest evolution of BMW iDrive with
QuickSelect, which is based on the new BMW Operating System 8.5.

New exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheel designs, revised
grilles, headlights with a striking design, and the new rear lights
with laser-lit accents mark the latest advances in the exterior of the
two models. Step inside the sporting two-door models and key new
features of the cabin are immediately apparent with new steering wheel
designs, and new interior trim elements.

Production of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and Cabriolet will remain at
BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The worldwide market launch will begin in
March 2024.

Newly designed headlights, innovative rear lights with
Laserlight accents.

Design cues specific to the BMW 4 Series include the visually
powerful front end shaped by slim LED headlights and a vertically
arranged BMW kidney grille. The air intakes of the striking
forward-angled grille have a mesh structure on 430i models, both in
standard form and if the M Sport package is specified. The surround is
now finished in matte chrome.

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe and Cabriolet also feature visually and
functionally upgraded headlights. The LED units in their inner
workings, which provide all the light functions, have been redesigned
and have a new structure. Low and high beam lighting is generated from
a single LED module. And a pair of vertical arrow-shaped LED units
house the side marker light, daytime driving light, and turn signal
indicator functions. The technically focused look of the new light
sources gives the headlights a sophisticated, progressive appearance.

The LED headlights are paired with the visually and technologically
impressive design of the Laserlight taillights, which are part of the
optional M Sport Pro Package on all 4 Series models. These units
feature laser diodes illuminating glass fiber bundles, producing
attractive 3-dimensional light graphics which complement the taillight clusters.

metallic paint finishes. Cape York Green metallic and Vegas Red
metallic are new additions to the range. A wide variety of
BMW Individual paint finishes are also available.

Two attractive new 19-inch wheel designs are offered with either
mixed performance tires or all-season tires. The new style 995M alloy
wheels in a Y-spoke design can be ordered in either Jet Black or Jet
Black with a burnished finish. And the new style 1038I BMW Individual
alloy wheels in Midnight Grey also have a Y-spoke design with a

Interior and equipment. Progressive style and an aura of
carefully honed refinement.

Standard sport seats and newly designed steering wheels add to the
pleasure of the driving experience in the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and
Cabriolet. High-quality, well-crafted materials and a new operating
concept for ventilation and climate control systems add to the
cockpit’s premium allure. The changes carried out to the interior of
the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and Cabriolet ensure those on board can
enjoy driving pleasure with progressive style and long-distance
comfort in an ambience of carefully honed refinement.

New steering wheels with standard gearshift paddles.

New steering wheels designs for the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and
Cabriolet stand out with their modern appearance and sporty feel. As
standard on 430i models, the driver will find in front of them a newly
designed sports leather steering wheel with a polygonal rim and two
spokes. The M Sport package (optional on 430i xDrive models, standard
on M440i xDrive models) brings an M leather steering wheel in
three-spoke design with a flat-bottomed rim. M440i xDrive models also
add tri-colour M stitching a red stripe at the wheel’s 12 o’clock position.

The redesigned steering wheels have illuminated multifunction buttons
and gearshift paddles, which enable swift manual control of gear
selections and underscore the sharp sporting profile of the new BMW 4
Series models.

Detail revisions for the instrument panel, digital climate control.

The introduction of BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect brings
improved operation of the ventilation and climate control functions in
the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and Cabriolet. Temperature, fan speed, seat
heating and ventilation (when equipped) and steering wheel heating
(when equipped) can now be adjusted by touch via the BMW Curved
Display or by voice command with the help of the BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant. New adjustment controls for the air vent grilles
in the centre of the instrument panel and on the driver’s and front
passenger’s side of the cockpit allow the direction of airflow to be
adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

The standard ambient lighting in the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and
Cabriolet now also includes contour lighting integrated into the trim
around the central vents. Like the lighting for the footwells, the
storage compartment in the front section of the centre console, and
the door handles, this can be adjusted for colour and brightness
according to personal preference. The functionality of the interior
lighting also includes an atmospheric Welcome and Goodbye Animation
and light signals indicating an open door or incoming phone call.

The new BMW M440i xDrive models. New-look BMW kidney grille,
black tailpipe finishers as standard.

An array of select design details proclaim the dynamic character of
the M Performance models more vividly. The new M440i xDrive Coupe and
Cabriolet feature a new BMW kidney grille with a surround in
high-gloss black and horizontally arranged bars adorned by an M logo.
All the front apron design elements that were previously finished in
Cerium Grey now come in high-gloss black. At the rear end of the M440i
xDrive models, trapezoidal tailpipe trim signals the presence of the
powerful engine under the hood. They are now finished in high-gloss
black as standard.

Exclusive touches: M Carbon Exterior Package.

Optional on M440i xDrive models, the M Carbon Exterior Package adds
mirror caps for the new twin-stalk M exterior mirrors and inserts for
the outer air intakes constructed from carbon fiber-reinforced
plastic. This package also equips a carbon fiber rear lip spoiler.

Heightened sports car ambience in the cabin.

Interior trim elements in Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite, M door sill
trim, an M driver’s footrest, and M-specific graphics for the BMW
Curved Display characterize the distinctive aura inside the M440i
xDrive models. The standard sport seats are equipped with Perforated
Sensatec as standard, while Vernasca leather, including the new Black
Vernasca leather with Coral Red highlight, and BMW Individual Merino
leather can be optioned. The M440i xDrive Cabriolet includes Vernasca
leather as standard equipment.

Display and control/operation system, connectivity. The new
BMW Operating System 8.5 and innovative digital services.

The advances made in terms of digitalization in the latest edition of
the BMW 4 Series are also clear to see. This is mainly thanks to the
upgraded control/operation system using BMW Operating System 8.5 with
QuickSelect. In order to provide intuitive, easy control of numerous
functions along with access to innovative digital services, the new
BMW 4 Series Coupe and the new BMW 4 Series Cabriolet features a
new-look home screen and QuickSelect rapid access tech, bringing an
improved menu structure that takes its cue from consumer electronics devices.

The enhanced BMW Operating System 8.5 featuring QuickSelect is
packaged together with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant, meaning it has been carefully geared to operation
using the touchscreen and natural language. The control/operation
system in the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and new BMW 4 Series Cabriolet
additionally comprises multifunction buttons on the steering wheel
and, as an option, the BMW Head-Up Display. The new BMW Operating
System helps to deliver a focused, assured driving experience by
showing the right information in the right place.

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect: functions shown on a single level
and selectable with rapid-access tech.

The new BMW Operating System 8.5 home screen continuously displays
the navigation system’s map view or other individually configurable
graphics on the control display. On the same level, widgets appear in
a vertical arrangement on the driver’s side of the display. Drivers
can switch between them with a vertical swipe of the finger. The
QuickSelect feature allows the function selected in this way to be
activated directly without having to enter a submenu. And once the
relevant settings have been chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at
the lower edge of the control display is all it takes to return to the
home screen. Icons for direct access to the climate control menu, All
Apps menu and, if activated, Apple CarPlay® and Android
Auto™ can also now be found next to the home icon.

The new flat menu structure makes it much easier to activate the
desired functions and settings. The digital content – just like the
hardware in the form of the BMW Curved Display – is designed to
enhance the driver focus for which BMW is renowned.

Powertrains with 48V mild hybrid technology. Powerful and efficient.

The new B58B30M2 3-litre inline 6-cylinder engines in the 2025 M440i
xDrive models feature 48V mild hybrid technology for sharper power
deliver and greater efficiency. The auxilliary electric drive of the
48V starter generator provides 11 hp of instantaneous boost to the 375
hp TwinPower Turbo engine, resulting in a maximum system output of 386
hp @ 5,200-6,250 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque @ 1,900-4,800 rpm.

The B48B20O2 2-litre inline 4-cylinder engine in the 2025 430i xDrive
also benefits from 48V mild hybrid technology, as well as
incorporation of the Miller cycle combustion process, a redesign of
the intake ports and combustion chambers, and innovations in the areas
of camshaft control, injection, ignition system, and exhaust gas
routing. The TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine produces 255 hp @
4,700-6,500 rpm, and 295 lb-ft of torque @ 1,600-4,500 rpm.

BMW Maps navigation system now with Augmented View.

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system forms part of the standard
BMW Live Cockpit Plus. Following the introduction of BMW Operating
System 8.5 in the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and new BMW 4 Series
Cabriolet, the system now makes it even easier to input destinations
and can offer additional information while driving.

Another new feature is the Augmented View function. This supplements
the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of
the driver’s view on the control display or instrument cluster and
augmenting it with tips and information to match the context. At
confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is
integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best
turn-off for the planned route. The Augmented View function can also
come to the driver’s aid when searching for a parking spot by showing
supplementary information. Augmented View is optionally available as
part of Digital Cockpit Professional.

Personalisation using the BMW ID and My BMW App.

Drivers of the new BMW 4 Series Coupe and Cabriolet will also find it
easier to use their BMW ID to personalize the user experience. Signing
in to the vehicle by scanning a QR codewith a smartphone is all it
takes to import the customer’s personal profile, load synchronizable
settings and automatically link the key detected in the vehicle with
the BMW ID.

Available free of charge from the app stores for both iOS and
Android, the My BMW App acts as a universal digital interface that
provides information at any time on the vehicle’s status, for example,
its remaining range and any servicing and maintenance requirements.
Depending on the car’s specification, it also enables remote operation
of functions such as locating the vehicle, locking and unlocking the
doors or monitoring the car’s immediate vicinity and interior with
Remote View. The My BMW app can additionally be used to send
destination addresses from a smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation
system. The My Trips feature including Efficiency Trainer and monthly
review provides the user with data and evaluations for distances
travelled, fuel consumption and average speed.

Munich. For the third time in a row, BMW M GmbH ended
the financial year as the global market leader in the performance and
high-performance car segment. Indeed, the company posted record sales
once again in 2021. A total of 163,542 BMW M cars were delivered to
customers worldwide last year, a 13 percent increase on 2020.

This growth was spread equally between the High-Performance sports
cars and Performance cars made by BMW M GmbH, with both product
categories raising their sales figures to a new level. “This success
is the perfect start to our anniversary year,” says Franciscus van
Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “M is in a stronger position than ever as it
celebrates its 50th birthday.”

New BMW M3 and new BMW M4 enjoy immediate success.

The biggest drivers of growth among the High-Performance sports cars
were the new BMW M3 and BMW M4 models introduced in spring 2021.
Fuelled by a vehicle concept focused squarely on emotionally charged
dynamism and unprecedented diversity in the model range, the new BMW
M3 Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 – 10.0 l/100 km [27.7 – 28.3
mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 231 – 227 g/km as per
WLTP), new BMW M4 Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 10.1 – 9.9 l/100
km [28.0 – 28.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined:
230 – 226 g/km as per WLTP) and new BMW M4 Convertible (fuel
consumption combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 233 – 231 g/km as per WLTP) got off to an
extremely successful start. The latest model generation is the first
to offer customers two output levels topping out at 375 kW/510 hp, the
M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a choice of either a six-speed
manual gearbox or the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

“The response to the new generation of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 has been
simply overwhelming,” reports Timo Resch, Vice President Customer,
Brand and Sales at BMW M GmbH. “We can therefore expect demand for
these iconic sports cars to continue on an upward curve in 2022.”

Also making a powerful contribution to the latest rise in
High-Performance model sales at BMW M GmbH were the BMW X5 M
Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.6 – 13.3 l/100 km [20.8
– 21,2 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 308 – 303 g/km as
per WLTP) and BMW X6 M Competition (fuel consumption combined:
13.4 – 13.1 l/100 km [21.1 – 21.6 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions
combined: 305 – 299 g/km as per WLTP). Following the successful market
launch of the latest model generation the previous year, the
charismatic High-Performance sports cars in the Sports Activity
Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé segment – both powered by a 460
kW/625 hp V8 engine – increased their sales figures once again in 2021.

Alluring and in demand: the BMW M models in the BMW 4 Series range.

The dynamic excellence, agility and precision for which M is renowned
also enabled the brand’s Performance models to delight and excite a
wide range of customers over the past year. Credit for the latest
boost to sales goes above all to the M models based on the new BMW 4
Series. Particularly popular were the variants of the new BMW 4 Series
Coupé, whose line-up consists of the BMW M440i Coupé (fuel consumption
combined: 8.1 – 7.4 l/100 km [34.8 – 38.2 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 184 – 167 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW
M440i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.2 – 7.5 l/100 km
[34.5 – 37.7 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined:
186 – 170 g/km as per WLTP) powered by a 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder
in-line petrol engine, and the BMW M440d xDrive Coupé (fuel
consumption combined: 6.3 – 5.7 l/100 km [44.8 – 49.6 mpg imp];
CO2 emissions combined: 165 – 150 g/km as per WLTP), whose
six-cylinder in-line diesel unit produces 250 kW/340 hp.

The latest BMW X models within the ranks of M’s Performance cars also
proved extremely desirable. Indeed, the BMW X3 M40i powered by a
six-cylinder in-line engine with 265 kW/360 hp (fuel consumption
combined: 9.5 – 8.8 l/100 km [29.7 – 32.1 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 216 – 199 g/km as per WLTP) and the BMW X7 M50i
(fuel consumption combined: 12.8 – 12.3 l/100 km [22.1 – 23.0 mpg
imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 292 – 280 g/km as per WLTP)
with its 390 kW/530 hp V8 unit both posted an increase in new registrations.

Looking ahead to an anniversary year brimming with highlights.

BMW M GmbH will continue its product offensive in this anniversary
year with the addition of new High-Performance and Performance models.
Highlights include the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption
combined: 8.8 – 8.1 l/100 km [32.1 – 34.9 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 200 – 185 g/km as per WLTP) and the arrival later
in the year of the first BMW M3 Touring and an exclusive
special-edition model based on the new BMW M4 Coupé.

In addition, the BMW Group subsidiary – which was founded as BMW
Motorsport GmbH in May 1972 and enjoys the status of an independent
manufacturer – will also drive the transformation to electric
mobility. Following in the tyre tracks of the BMW i4 M50 (electric
power consumption combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/100 km as per WLTP;
CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km) in the first half of 2022
will be the likewise fully electric BMW iX M60 (projected electric
power consumption combined: 24.7 – 21.7 kWh/100 km as per WLTP;
CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km).

The most powerful BMW M model ever made points the way to the
future of the brand.

The anniversary year will be crowned by the start of production of
the BMW XM. The most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series
production is also the brand’s first High-Performance model to employ
a plug-in hybrid drive system. Its newly developed M Hybrid technology
brings together a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor to
develop maximum output of 550 kW/750 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm
(737 lb-ft). The design of the BMW XM majors on presence and extrovert
appeal and in so doing sends out a clear statement in the luxury segment.

“Our first standalone model since the legendary BMW M1 represents a
complete re-imagining of the high-performance car segment,” says van
Meel. “The BMW XM blends expressive design and progressive interior
luxury with an incomparable driving experience that serves up both
sublime performance and the ability to glide along in near silence in
all-electric mode. In so doing, it provides an inimitable expression
of poise and assurance, and at the same time points the way to the
future of our brand.”

Press Contact: Marc Belcourt
Tel: +1-905-428-5078
E-mail: marc.belcourt@bmwgroup.ca

Press Release,Sales & Finance,M4,M3,BMW i,G26,i4 M50,G07,X7,G80,X3,X5 M,X6 M,4 Series,G01,F97,iX,X3 M,F95,F96,i20,M240,Product,BMW,BMW M

boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment
it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold
around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven
not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive
models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the
BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models
is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW
continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By
offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a
front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated
its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will
secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the
future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either
transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as
well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe
with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.

BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came
with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor
Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately
reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists
took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This
very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away
from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made
for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new
champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers
from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes
typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of
this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM)
system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the
earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of
the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed
either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC).
The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution
ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely
dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW
rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the
all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to
the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains
the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque
steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the
latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of
power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner,
further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i
“Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent
between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed
differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential
were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the
front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability.
This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was
offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and
including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the
BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now
electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured
multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear
power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with
driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate
clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by
electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system
monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the
Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about
brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a
class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and
precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics
even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In
the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered
in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle
concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first
Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving
dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the
time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in
this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of
38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic
control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X
(Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured
the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle
challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept,
there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at
BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s
all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation
of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up
the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle
segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered
even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only
premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was
introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon
extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely
fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive
worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to
continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving
situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the
electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability
Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position
and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s
first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike
conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least
one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of
oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively
corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on
the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring
models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced
in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold
worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its
second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid
drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly
established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to
present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical
dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For
the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined
with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power
split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled
agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on
overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further
perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile,
in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its
range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive
system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6
M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the
all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many
years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of
its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also
combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes
the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing
engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and
taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by
an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW
model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision,
BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal
combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time
before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7
Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive
Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6
Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5
Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe
models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with
the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers
a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and
contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is
available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW
also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second
generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW
xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This
was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined
its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new
front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step
in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system.
This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in
hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving
the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the
front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances
that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was
followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in
hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to
full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics
technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and
effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent
hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal
combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all
times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The
drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the
full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series
makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end
BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts,
and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in
October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow
intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active
Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.
