RECORD PROFITS FOR BMW M New M Coupé and M5 Get Off to an Excellent Start
Munich, Germany, February 10, 1999... BMW M, the Company for Individual and M
Automobiles, recorded an astonishing rise in turnover during 1998. For the
first time in the history of this successful BMW subsidiary, BMW M produced and
sold more than 20,000 M units in a single year, an increase of more than
40-percent over the previous year.
"This figure provides impressive evidence of the specific market leadership
position enjoyed by BMW M globally," said Adolf P. Prommesberger, Chairman of
the Board of Directors of BMW M, commenting on this excellent year. One reason
for this outstanding success is the continued high level of sales of the M3 and
the M roadster. But the new M Coupé and M5 models launched in 1998 are also
already playing their part in the company's success.
On a global scale, in particular, and above all on the US market, BMW M
recorded increased demand of 19 percent with its M3 Coupé and M3 Convertible
models. BMW of North America has been selling most M cars for several years
and, in addition to the M roadster, M3 Convertible and M Coupé, will also be
launching the new M5 as from autumn 1999. Its predecessor model, the M3, which
has been the best-selling car in the M Series, has sold over 65,000 units since
1992. In addition over 40,000 customers around the world decided to take
advantage of BMW Individual products in 1998. This highest form of customer
tailoring is gaining more and more in significance since it allows BMW drivers
to equip their cars with equipment to meet their own specific needs.
BMW driver training also enjoyed a very successful 1998. It held 900 courses in
which experienced instructors provided training for almost 13,000 people in
responsible and safe driving techniques.
